⁶ ¶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was desirable to the eyes, and a tree of covetousness to understand, she took of its fruit and ate and gave also unto her husband with her; and he ate.

² And it came to pass one evening, that David arose from off his bed and walked upon the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself, and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

⁶ ¶ Then David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. ⁷ And when Uriah had come unto him, David asked him how Joab was and how the people were and how the war prospered. ⁸ And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and royal food was sent unto him. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the slaves of his lord and did not go down to his house. ¹⁰ And when they had told David, saying, Uriah did not go down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Didst thou not come from thy journey? Why then didst thou not go down to thy house? ¹¹ And Uriah said unto David, The ark and Israel and Judah abide in tents, and my lord Joab and the slaves of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By thy life and by the life of thy soul, I will not do this thing. ¹² And David said to Uriah, Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day and the next day. ¹³ And when David had called him, he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his bed with the slaves of his lord but did not go down to his house. ¹⁴ ¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retire from him, that he may be smitten and die. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that the most valiant men were. ¹⁷ And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the people of the slaves of David fell, and Uriah the Hittite died also.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass after these things that Naboth of Jezreel had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, next to the palace of Ahab, king of Samaria. ² And Ahab spoke unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard that I may have it for a garden of herbs because it is next to my house, and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or if it seems good unto thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.

²⁰ ¶ But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master has spared Naaman, this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought. As the LORD lives, I will run after him and take something from him. ²¹ So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him and said, Is there no peace? ²² And he said, Peace. My master has sent me, saying, Behold, even now two young men of the sons of the prophets came to me from Mount Ephraim; give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver and two changes of garments. ²³ And Naaman said, If you wish take two talents. And he urged him and bound two talents of silver in two bags with two changes of garments and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bore them before him. ²⁴ And when he came to a secret place, he took them from their hand and bestowed them in the house; and he let the men go, and they departed. ²⁵ But when he went in and stood before his master, Elisha said unto him, From where comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went nowhere. ²⁶ Then he said unto him, Did not my heart go with thee when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money and to receive garments and oliveyards and vineyards and sheep and oxen and menslaves and maidslaves? ²⁷ The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

¹ ¶ I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a maid?

³⁷ ¶ Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity, and cause me to live in thy way.

²³ Above all else, guard thy heart; for out of it flows the issues of life.

³¹ Do not look upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its colour in the cup, it goes down smoothly.

²² ¶ He that hastens to be rich has an evil eye and does not consider that poverty shall come upon him.

¹⁵ Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we are at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood we have hid ourselves:

¹⁵ Woe unto those that hide themselves from the LORD, covering the counsel; and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who sees us? and who knows us?

¹ ¶ Woe unto those that devise iniquity and fabricate evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they put it into effect because they have power in their hands. ² And they coveted fields and stole them, and houses and took them away; so they oppressed the man and his house, even the man and his heritage.

⁹ Woe to him that covets ill-gotten gain by violence for his house that he may set his nest on high, that he may escape from the power of evil!

²⁸ but I say unto you, That whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ Therefore if thy right eye should bring thee occasion to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is better for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

² For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed, neither hid that shall not be known.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.

⁷ ¶ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? No, in no wise. But, I did not know sin except by the law; for neither would I have known lust if the law did not say, Thou shalt not covet. ⁸ Then sin, when there was occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of lust. For without the law sin was as if it were dormant.

³ ¶ But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not be once named among you as becomes saints,

⁵ For this ye know, that no fornicator nor unclean person nor covetous man, who is also an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

⁵ ¶ Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil lust, and covetousness, which is idolatry;

⁹ For those that desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

⁵ Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as ye have; for he has said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

¹⁵ Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

¹⁵ who forsaking the right way have erred, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness,

¹⁵ Love not the world neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the charity of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
