¹ ¶ And it came to pass that as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray as John also taught his disciples. ² And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father who art in the heavens, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so also in the earth. ³ Give us day by day our daily bread. ⁴ And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. ⁵ And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend and shall go unto him at midnight and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; ⁶ for a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? ⁷ And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. ⁸ I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity, he will rise and give him as many as he needs. ⁹ And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. ¹⁰ For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened. ¹¹ If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? ¹² Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? ¹³ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those that ask him? ¹⁴ ¶ And he was casting out a demon, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the demon was gone out, the one who had been dumb spoke; and the people marvelled. ¹⁵ But some of them said, He casts out devils through Beelzebub the prince of the demons. ¹⁶ And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. ¹⁷ But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every house or city divided against itself will not remain. ¹⁸ If Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out demons through Beelzebub. ¹⁹ And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. ²⁰ But if I with the finger of God cast out the demons, certainly the kingdom of God is come upon you. ²¹ When an armed strong man keeps his palace, his goods are in peace; ²² but when another stronger than he shall come upon him and overcome him, he takes from him all his arms in which he trusted and divides his spoils. ²³ He that is not with me is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters. ²⁴ When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, I will return unto my house from which I came out. ²⁵ And when he comes, he finds it swept and garnished. ²⁶ Then he goes, and takes unto him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in and dwell there, and the last state of that man is worse than the first. ²⁷ ¶ And it came to pass as he spoke these things, a certain woman of the crowd lifted up her voice and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee and the breasts which thou hast sucked. ²⁸ But he said, Rather, blessed are those that hear the word of God and keep it. ²⁹ ¶ And gathering the people unto him, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign, and no sign shall be given it but the sign of Jonah the prophet. ³⁰ For as Jonah was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. ³¹ The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment against the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. ³² The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here. ³³ No one, when he has lighted a lamp, puts it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a lampstand that those who come in may see the light. ³⁴ The lamp of the body is the eye; therefore when thine eye is sincere, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. ³⁵ Take heed therefore if the light which is in thee is darkness. ³⁶ If thy whole body therefore is full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light as when the bright shining of a lamp doth give thee light. ³⁷ ¶ And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him, and he went in and sat down to food. ³⁸ And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. ³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? ⁴¹ But rather give alms {lit. do acts of mercy} of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. ⁴² But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs and pass over the judgment and the charity of God; these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ⁴³ Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the first seats in the synagogues and greetings in the markets. ⁴⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which are not seen, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. ⁴⁵ Then one of the lawyers answered and said unto him, Master, saying these things, thou dost reproach us also. ⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye burden men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. ⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and others they shall persecute: ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, who perished between the altar and the temple; verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. ⁵² Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and those that were entering in, ye hindered. ⁵³ And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently and to provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ laying wait for him and seeking to catch something out of his mouth that they might accuse him.

¹⁷ LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart; thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

¹⁴ Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

¹² ¶ And it came to pass in those days that he went out into the mountain to pray and continued all night in prayer to God.

¹⁸ ¶ And it came to pass as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him, and he asked them, saying, Who do the people say that I am?

²⁸ ¶ And it came to pass about eight days after these words, he took Peter and John and James and went up into the mountain to pray.

³⁹ ¶ And he came out and went as he was wont to the mount of Olives, and his disciples also followed him. ⁴⁰ And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. ⁴¹ And he withdrew from them about a stone’s cast and kneeled down and prayed, ⁴² saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. ⁴³ And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. ⁴⁴ And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. ⁴⁵ And when he rose up from prayer and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow

²⁶ ¶ And likewise also the Spirit helps our weakness; for we know not how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself makes entreaty for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. ²⁷ But he that searches the hearts knows what is the desire of the Spirit, that according to the will of God, he makes entreaty for the saints.

⁷ Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, was heard because of his reverent fear;

² Ye covet and have not; ye murder, and have envy and cannot obtain; ye fight and war and have not that which ye desire because ye ask not. ³ Ye ask and receive not because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your pleasures.

²⁰ But ye, beloved, building up yourselves upon your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

³ ¶ Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is what the LORD spoke, saying, I will be sanctified in those that come near me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron was silent.

²³ A bullock or a lamb that has any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, thou may offer for a freewill offering; but for a vow it shall not be accepted.

⁴³ thou shalt hear in the heavens, in the habitation of thy dwelling place, and do according to all that for which the stranger shall have called unto thee, that all peoples of the earth may know thy name and fear thee as do thy people Israel and that they may know that thy name is invoked upon this house, which I have built.

¹⁹ Now, therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save us now out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou alone art the LORD God.

⁶ and said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in the heavens and dost thou not rule in all the kingdoms of the Gentiles? Is there not power and might in thy hand so that no one is able to withstand thee?

⁴ ¶ The LORD is in the temple of his holiness, the LORD’s throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try the children of men.

¹¹ Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.

¹⁸ ¶ Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, the only one who does wondrous things ¹⁹ And blessed be his glorious name for ever, and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.

²⁰ Bless the LORD, ye his angels, valiant and strong, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

⁵ Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens and thy glory above all the earth;

² Do not be rash with thy mouth and do not let thy heart be hasty to utter any thing before God, for God is in heaven and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few.

² And it shall come to pass in the last of the days or times, that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be confirmed as the head of the mountains and shall be exalted above the hills; and all the Gentiles shall flow unto it. ³ And many peoples shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths; for out of Zion shall go forth the law and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. ⁴ And he shall judge among the Gentiles and shall rebuke many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruninghooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. ⁵ O house of Jacob, come and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

² Above it stood the seraphims; each one had six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. ³ And one cried out unto another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of the hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.

¹⁶ Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel not acknowledge us; thou, O LORD, art our father; our everlasting Redeemer is thy name.

²³ And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the Gentiles, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the Gentiles shall know that I am the LORD, said the Lord GOD when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

²⁸ But there is a God in the heavens who reveals the mysteries, and he has made known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall happen at the end of days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, is this:

⁴⁴ And in the days of those kings the God of heaven shall raise up a kingdom which eternally shall never become corrupted, and this kingdom shall not be left to another people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

¹⁸ And they shall take the kingdom of the Holy One who is most High and possess the kingdom until the age and until the age of the ages.

²⁷ and that the kingdom and the dominion, and the majesty of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, be given to the holy people of the most High, His kingdom shall be an eternal kingdom, and all the dominions shall serve him and hear him.

² Take with you words, and be converted unto the LORD; say unto him, Take away all iniquity and receive us graciously, so will we render the calves of our lips.

¹⁴ For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

² and saying, Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

¹⁶ Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.

⁶ But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret shall reward thee openly. ⁷ But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions as the worldly do, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. ⁸ Be not ye therefore like unto them, for your Father knows what things ye have need of before ye ask him. ⁹ ¶ Ye, therefore, are to pray like this: Our Father who art in the heavens, Hallowed be thy name. ¹⁰ Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. ¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread. ¹² And set us free from our debts, as we set free our debtors. ¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. ¹⁴ For if ye set men free from their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also set you free; ¹⁵ but if ye do not set men free from their trespasses, neither will your Father set you free from your trespasses.

³² Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in the heavens.

⁹ and heal the sick that are therein and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come near unto you. ¹⁰ But into whatever city ye enter and they receive you not, go out into the streets of the same and say, ¹¹ Even the very dust of your city which cleaves on us we do wipe off against you; notwithstanding be ye sure of this that the kingdom of God is come near unto you.

⁷ to all that are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints; ye have grace and peace of God our Father and of the Lord Jesus, the Christ.

¹⁵ For ye have not received the spirit of slavery to be in fear again, but ye have received the Spirit of adoption of sons, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

³ Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

⁴ who gave himself for our sins that he might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

⁴ And I saw thrones, and those who sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them; and I saw the souls of those that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus and for the word of God and who had not worshipped the beast neither its image neither had received its mark upon their foreheads or in their hands; and they shall live and reign with Christ the thousand years.

¹⁵ And when the sons of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna (What is it?): for they did not know what it was. Then Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat. ¹⁶ This is the thing which the LORD has commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for each one, according to the number of your persons; take ye each one for those who are in his tent. ¹⁷ And the sons of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less. ¹⁸ And when they did measure it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered each one according to his eating. ¹⁹ And Moses said, Let no one leave of it until the morning. ²⁰ Notwithstanding they did not hearken unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them. ²¹ And they gathered it early in the morning, each one according to his eating; and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. ²² ¶ And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one; and all the princes of the congregation came and told Moses.

⁸ Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread of my judgment:

¹⁶ he shall dwell upon the high places: fortresses of rocks shall be his place of refuge: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread.

³⁴ Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the affliction thereof.

²⁷ Labour not for the food which perishes, but for the food which abides unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you, for him has God the Father sealed. ²⁸ ¶ Then they said unto him, What shall we do that we might work the works of God? ²⁹ Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe in him whom he has sent. ³⁰ They said therefore unto him, What sign showest thou then that we may see and believe thee? what dost thou work? ³¹ Our fathers ate manna in the desert, as it is written, He gave them of the bread from the heaven to eat. ³² Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from the heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from the heaven. ³³ For the bread of God is he who descended from heaven and gives life unto the world.

¹⁶ the Angel who frees me from all evil, bless these young men, and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

³⁴ then thou shalt hear in the heavens and forgive the sin of thy people Israel and bring them again unto the land which thou didst give unto their fathers.

³⁶ then thou shalt hear in the heavens and forgive the sin of thy slaves and of thy people Israel, teaching them the good way in which they should walk and shalt give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.

¹¹ Caph For thy name’s sake, O LORD, pardon my iniquity; for it is great.

¹⁸ Resh Look upon my affliction and my pain and forgive all my sins.

¹ A Psalm of David, Maschil. ¶ Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. ² Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD does not impute iniquity and in whose spirit there is no guile. ³ When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my green growth is turned into the drought of summer. Selah. ⁵ I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and I have not hid my iniquity. I said, I will confess (against myself) my rebellions unto the LORD, and thou shalt forgive the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

¹ To the Overcomer,
A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. ¶ Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy mercy; according unto the multitude of thy compassion eradicate my rebellion. ² Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. ³ For I acknowledge my rebellion; and my sin is ever before me.

⁷ The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil; he shall preserve thy soul.

³ If thou, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall endure? ⁴ Therefore there is forgiveness close to thee, that thou may be feared.

²⁵ I, even I, am he that uproots thy rebellions for mine own sake and will not remember thy sins. ²⁶ Cause me to remember; let us enter into judgment together; declare, thou, that it may be put to thy account.

¹⁹ O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.

²⁵ ¶ At that time Jesus answered and said, I praise thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and understanding and hast revealed them unto children. ²⁶ Even so, Father, for thus it was pleasing in thy sight.

³⁵ So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you unless from your hearts ye forgive every one his brother their trespasses.

⁴¹ Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

¹³ Those on the rock are those that when they hear, receive the word with joy, but these have no root, who for a while believe and in time of temptation fall away.

⁴⁶ and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

¹⁵ I do not pray that thou should take them out of the world, but that thou should keep them from the evil.

¹³ No temptation has taken you but such as is common to man, but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what ye are able but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

⁷ And lest the greatness of the revelations should exalt me above measure, there is given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. ⁸ For this thing I besought the Lord three times that it might be taken from me.

³¹ Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and evil speaking be taken away from you, with all malice, ³² and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another even as God has forgiven you in Christ.

¹³ forbearing one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a quarrel against another: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

³ But the Lord is faithful, who shall confirm you and keep you from evil.

¹⁸ And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work and will save me for his heavenly kingdom, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

¹³ For judgment without mercy shall be done unto the one that has shown no mercy; and mercy boasts against judgment.

⁸ ¶ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

¹⁰ Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer; behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days; be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.

¹⁰ Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the entire world, to try those that dwell upon the earth.

¹ ¶ And he spoke a parable unto them to this end, that it behooves us always to pray and not faint, ² saying, There was in a city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man; ³ and there was a widow in that city, and she came unto him, saying, Defend me from my adversary. ⁴ And he would not for a while, but afterward he said within himself, Though I do not fear God, nor regard man, ⁵ yet because this widow troubles me, I will do her justice, lest by her continual coming she weary me. ⁶ And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge says. ⁷ And shall not God avenge his own elect who cry day and night unto him though he bears long regarding them? ⁸ I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man comes, shall he find faith on the earth?

¹⁰ And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and those that were ready went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut.

⁶ Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself, for I am not worthy that thou should enter under my roof;

²⁵ When once the husband of the house is risen up and shall have shut the door, and ye begin to stand without and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not from where ye are,

¹⁷ From now on let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.

²⁶ And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let thee go except thou bless me.

²² And, behold, a woman of Canaan having come out of the same borders cried unto him, saying, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me; my daughter is sick, possessed by a demon. ²³ But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away, for she cries out after us. ²⁴ But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. ²⁵ Then she came and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. ²⁶ But he answered and said, It is not good to take the children’s bread and to cast it to the little dogs. ²⁷ And she said, Yes, Lord, yet the little dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. ²⁸ Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou desire. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

³⁰ ¶ But I beseech you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by the charity of the Spirit, that ye help me with prayers to God for me,

⁸ For this thing I besought the Lord three times that it might be taken from me.

¹ ¶ For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh,

¹² Epaphras, who is one of you, a slave of Christ, salutes you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand firm, perfect and fulfilled in all the will of God.

⁴ One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the LORD and to enquire in his temple.

⁸ My heart has spoken unto me from thee, Seek my face. Thy face, O LORD, will I seek.

⁴ Daleth I sought the LORD, and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears.

¹⁰ Jod The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, but those that seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.

¹⁵ and call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

³ Glory in his holy name; let the heart of those that seek the LORD rejoice. ⁴ Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his face continually.

⁵ From a tight place I called upon JAH; and JAH answered me and set me in a wide place.

¹ ¶ By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but I did not find him. ² I will rise now and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but I did not find him. ³ The watchmen that go about the city found me, to whom I said, Have ye seen him whom my soul loves? ⁴ It was but a little that I passed from them that I found him whom my soul loves: I held him and would not let him go until I had brought him into my mother’s house and into the chamber of her that brought me into the light.

⁶ I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had withdrawn himself and was gone; my soul went after his speech; I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.

¹⁹ I have not spoken in secret in a dark place of the earth. Not without substance did I say unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me; I am the LORD who speaks righteousness, who declares things that are right.

⁶ ¶ Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near: ⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

¹² Then ye shall call upon me, and ye shall walk in my ways and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

³ Call unto me, and I will answer thee and show thee great and difficult things, which thou dost not know.

³ And I turned my face unto the Lord God, seeking him in prayer and supplication, in fasting and sackcloth, and ashes:

⁴ ¶ But thus hath the LORD said unto the house of Israel, Seek me, and ye shall live: ⁵ but do not seek Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and do not pass to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought. ⁶ Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph and devour it, and there be no one to quench it in Bethel.

²⁹ and yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

⁷ ¶ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you; ⁸ for every one that asks receives, and he that seeks finds, and to him that knocks it shall be opened. ⁹ Or what man is there of you, whom, if his son asks for bread, will he give him a stone? ¹⁰ Or if he asks for fish, will he give him a serpent? ¹¹ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in the heavens give good things to those that ask him?

²² And all things, whatever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go ahead of you into the kingdom of God.

²⁴ Therefore I say unto you that everything that ye ask for, praying, believe that ye receive it, and it shall come upon you.

³⁷ And what I say unto you, I say unto all: Watch.

²⁴ Strive to enter in at the narrow gate; for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in and shall not be able. ²⁵ When once the husband of the house is risen up and shall have shut the door, and ye begin to stand without and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not from where ye are,

⁴⁵ Philip found Nathanael and said unto him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. ⁴⁶ And Nathanael said unto him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said unto him, Come and see. ⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and said of him, Behold a true Israelite, in whom is no guile! ⁴⁸ Nathanael said unto him, From where dost thou know me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. ⁴⁹ Nathanael answered and said unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

¹³ And whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

⁷ If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

¹⁶ Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it unto you.

²³ ¶ And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you. ²⁴ Until now ye have asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be fulfilled.

⁴ And when he looked on him, he was afraid and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms {lit. thine acts of mercy} are come up for a memorial before God. ⁵ And now send men to Joppa and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter; ⁶ he lodges with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side; he shall tell thee what it behooves thee to do.

⁷ to those who persevered in well doing, glory and honour and incorruption, to those who seek eternal life;

² (For he saith, I have heard thee in an acceptable time, and in the day of saving health I have succoured thee; behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of saving health.)

⁸ For this thing I besought the Lord three times that it might be taken from me. ⁹ And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, I will rather glory in my weaknesses that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

¹⁶ Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of his grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

⁶ But without faith it is impossible to please God; for he that comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those that diligently seek him.

⁵ And if any of you lacks wisdom, let them ask of God (who gives abundantly to all, and without reproach), and it shall be given them.

¹⁵ and the prayer of faith shall cause the one who is sick to be saved, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he shall be forgiven them.

²² and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

¹⁴ ¶ And this is the confidence that we have in God, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he hears us: ¹⁵ And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we also know that we have the petitions that we asked of him.

²⁴ But unto you I say and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine and who have not known the depths of Satan (as they say); I will put upon you no other burden

²² For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes; nevertheless thou hast heard the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

⁸ Gimel Even when I cried and shouted, he shut out my prayer.

¹⁸ Vau And I said, My strength and my hope of the LORD is perished.

⁵⁴ Tzaddi Waters flowed over my head; then I said, I am dead. ⁵⁵ ¶ Koph I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon. ⁵⁶ Koph Thou hast heard my voice; do not hide thine ear at my cry that I might breath. ⁵⁷ Koph Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee; thou didst say, Fear not. ⁵⁸ Resh O Lord, thou hast pleaded the cause of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

² and said, I cried by reason of my tribulation unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and thou didst hear my voice. ³ For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about; all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. ⁴ Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will see thy holy temple again. ⁵ The waters compassed me about, even to the soul, the depth closed me round about; the weeds were wrapped about my head. ⁶ I descended to the roots of the mountains; the earth put her bars about me for ever; yet thou hast brought up my life out of the grave, O LORD my God. ⁷ When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer entered in unto thee in thy holy temple. ⁸ Those that observe lying vanities forsake his mercy.

¹ ¶ And he spoke a parable unto them to this end, that it behooves us always to pray and not faint,

³ Ye ask and receive not because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your pleasures.

¹¹ Behold, we count blessed those who endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job and have seen the end of the Lord, that the Lord is very merciful, and full of compassion.

¹⁵ Can a woman forget her sucking child that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Even though they may forget, I will not forget thee.

⁹ Or what man is there of you, whom, if his son asks for bread, will he give him a stone?

⁶ ¶ And thou, son of man, do not be afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, for they are rebels; though thou find thyself among thorns and thy dwelling be with briers, do not be afraid of their words, nor fear before them, for they are a rebellious house.

¹⁹ Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

¹⁰ And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails; and their power was to hurt men five months.

⁵ And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. ⁶ ¶ And the LORD repented of having made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

²¹ And the LORD smelled a savour of rest, and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his childhood; neither will I again smite any more every living thing as I have done.

¹⁴ What is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified? ¹⁵ Behold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight. ¹⁶ How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?

⁵ Behold, the pain of my iniquity has caused me to writhe; my mother conceived me so that sin might be removed from me.

²³ Return at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

³ For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon thy seed and my blessing upon thine offspring: ⁴ And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

²⁷ And I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my commandments, and ye shall keep my rights, and do them.

²⁸ ¶ And it shall come to pass after this that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

⁴⁵ that ye may be sons of your Father who is in the heavens, for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

¹⁴ For if ye set men free from their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also set you free;

³⁰ Therefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

³² For the Gentiles seek after all these things.) For your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things.

¹¹ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in the heavens give good things to those that ask him?

² And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father who art in the heavens, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so also in the earth.

³⁰ But as soon as this thy son was come who has devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed the fatted calf for him. ³¹ And he said unto him, Son, thou art always with me, and all that I have is thine. ³² It was necessary that we should make merry and be glad, for this thy brother was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.

⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

³⁷ ¶ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If any man thirsts, let him come unto me and drink. ³⁸ He that believes in me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. ³⁹ (But this he spoke concerning the Spirit, which those that believe on him should receive, for the Holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified.)

³⁸ Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized each one of you into the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

⁹ Then much more now justified in his blood, we shall be saved from wrath by him. ¹⁰ For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled with God by the death of his Son, much more, now reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

¹⁷ For if by one offense, death reigned because of one man; much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of gifts and of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus the Christ.

¹⁸ And I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwells no good thing; for I have the desire, but I am not able to perform that which is good.

³² He that did not spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also give us all things with him?

⁹ For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, much more shall the ministry of righteousness abound in glory. ¹⁰ For even that which was so glorious had no glory in this respect, in comparison with the glory that excels. ¹¹ For if that which fades away was glorious, much more shall that which remains be glorious.

³ For we ourselves also were foolish in another time, rebellious, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

⁹ Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence; is it not much better to be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and we shall live? ¹⁰ For they verily for a few days chastened us as it seemed good unto them, but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

³² And as they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a demon. ³³ And when the demon was cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the multitude marvelled, saying, Such a thing has never been seen in Israel. ³⁴ But the Pharisees said, He casts out demons through the prince of the demons.

²² ¶ Then was brought unto him one possessed with a demon, blind, and dumb, and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spoke and saw. ²³ And all the people were amazed and said, Is not this the son of David? ²⁴ But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow does not cast out demons but by Beelzebub the prince of the demons.

³² And they bring unto him one that was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. ³³ And taking him aside from the multitude, he put his fingers into the man’s ears; and spitting, he touched the man’s tongue with the saliva; ³⁴ and looking up to heaven, he cried out, and said, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. ³⁵ And straightway his ears were opened, and that which bound his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. ³⁶ And he charged them that they should tell no one; but the more he commanded them, so much more and more they published it ³⁷ and were beyond measure astonished, saying, He has done all things well: he makes both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak.

³⁴ But the Pharisees said, He casts out demons through the prince of the demons.

²⁵ It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the slave as his lord. If they have called the husband of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call those of his household?

²⁴ But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow does not cast out demons but by Beelzebub the prince of the demons. ²⁵ And Jesus knew their thoughts and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself shall not remain; ²⁶ and if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom remain? ²⁷ And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. ²⁸ But if I cast out the demons by the Spirit of God, then certainly the kingdom of God is come unto you. ²⁹ Or else how can one enter into the strong man’s house and spoil his goods except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. ³⁰ He that is not with me is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters abroad.

²² ¶ But the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said that he had Beelzebub and that by the prince of the devils he cast out devils. ²³ And he called them unto him and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? ²⁴ If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot remain. ²⁵ And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot remain. ²⁶ And if Satan rises up against himself and is divided, he cannot remain, but has an end. ²⁷ No man can enter into a strong man’s house and spoil his goods except he will first bind the strong man, and then he will spoil his house. ²⁸ Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men and whatever blasphemies with which they shall blaspheme, ²⁹ but whosoever shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit shall never have forgiveness but is obligated to eternal judgment, ³⁰ because they said, He has an unclean spirit.

¹⁸ If Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out demons through Beelzebub. ¹⁹ And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.

²⁰ The people answered and said, Thou hast a demon; who goes about to kill thee?

⁴⁸ Then the Jews answered, and said unto him, Do we not say well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon?

⁵² Then the Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keeps my word, he shall not taste death forever?

²⁰ And many of them said, He has a demon and is beside himself; why do ye hear him?

³⁸ ¶ Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we desire to see a sign from thee. ³⁹ But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there no sign shall be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah;

¹ ¶ The Pharisees and the Sadducees came to tempt him; they asked him to show them a sign from the heaven. ² But he answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather, for the heaven is glowing with an aurora. ³ And in the morning, It will be foul weather today, for the heaven has an aurora and is cloudy. O ye hypocrites, ye know how to make decisions based on the face of the heaven, and regarding the signs of the times are ye unable? ⁴ A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and no sign shall be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah. And he left them and departed.

¹¹ And the Pharisees came forth and began to argue with him, demanding of him a sign from heaven, tempting him. ¹² And crying out in his spirit, he said, Why does this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

³⁰ They said therefore unto him, What sign showest thou then that we may see and believe thee? what dost thou work?

²² For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom,

¹⁶ And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David or inheritance in the son of Jesse? Every man to your tents, O Israel! Now, David, see to thine own house! So all Israel went to their tents. ¹⁷ But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah. ¹⁸ Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the tribute and the sons of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. So King Rehoboam made speed to get into a chariot and fled to Jerusalem. ¹⁹ Thus Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

¹⁶ And the sons of Israel fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hand. ¹⁷ And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

²⁰ And he shall snatch on the right hand and be hungry, and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied; they shall eat each man the flesh of his own arm: ²¹ Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

² And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians, and they shall fight each one against his brother, and each one against his neighbour; city against city and kingdom against kingdom. ³ And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof, and I will destroy the counsel thereof; and they shall seek to the idols and to the charmers and to the spiritists and to the wizards.

⁴ And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Why think ye evil in your hearts?

²³ And I will kill her children with death, and all the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} shall know that I AM he that searches the kidneys and hearts, and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

¹⁰ Then Jesus said unto him, Get thee hence, Satan, for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

²⁶ and if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom remain?

³¹ Therefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven unto men. ³² And whosoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him, but whosoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this age, neither in the age to come. ³³ Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree corrupt and its fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by its fruit. ³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

¹⁵ But some of them said, He casts out devils through Beelzebub the prince of the demons.

⁵ In the same manner, the tongue is a very small member and boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell. ⁷ For every nature of beasts and of birds and of serpents and of beings in the sea may be tamed and is tamed by mankind, ⁸ but no man can tame the tongue, which is an evil that cannot be restrained and is full of deadly poison.

⁶ Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.

²⁷ And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. ²⁸ But if I cast out the demons by the Spirit of God, then certainly the kingdom of God is come unto you.

⁴¹ The men of Nineveh shall rise in the judgment with this generation and shall condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here. ⁴² The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation and shall condemn it, for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

⁴⁹ And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name; and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us.

³¹ The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment against the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. ³² The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here.

²² Then he said unto him, Out of thine own mouth I will judge thee, thou wicked slave. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that which I did not lay down, and reaping that which I did not sow;

¹⁹ ¶ Now we know that all that the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may submit themselves unto God.

¹⁹ Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God. But Pharaoh’s heart hardened, and he did not hearken unto them as the LORD had said.

²⁸ But if I cast out the demons by the Spirit of God, then certainly the kingdom of God is come unto you.

⁹ and heal the sick that are therein and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come near unto you.

¹¹ Even the very dust of your city which cleaves on us we do wipe off against you; notwithstanding be ye sure of this that the kingdom of God is come near unto you.

²⁵ And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.

²³ ¶ And when they had appointed him a day, many came to him into his lodging, to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, procuring to persuade them of that concerning Jesus, the Christ, out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets, from morning until evening. ²⁴ And some believed the things which were spoken, and some did not believe. ²⁵ And when they did not agree among themselves, they departed, after Paul had spoken this word, Well spoke the Holy Spirit by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, ²⁶ saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see and not perceive; ²⁷ for the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them. ²⁸ Be it known, therefore, unto you that this saving health of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it.

⁵ ¶ in testimony of the just judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer,

²⁹ Or else how can one enter into the strong man’s house and spoil his goods except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

²⁷ No man can enter into a strong man’s house and spoil his goods except he will first bind the strong man, and then he will spoil his house.

¹⁵ and I will put enmity between thee and the woman and between thy seed and her seed; that seed shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

¹ ¶ In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall visit punishment upon leviathan the fleeing serpent, and upon leviathan that serpent of double vision; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

²⁴ ¶ Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered? ²⁵ But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contends with thee, and I will save thy sons.

¹² Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil unto the strong because he has poured out his soul unto death, and he was numbered with the rebellious, having born the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

¹ ¶ Who is this that comes from Edom, with red garments from Bozrah? This glorious one in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. ² Why art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treads in the winefat? ³ I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the peoples there was no one with me; for I have trodden them with my anger and have trampled them with my fury; and their blood sprinkled my garments and stained all my raiment. ⁴ For the day of vengeance is in my heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.

¹⁵ and having spoiled the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

⁸ He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared, that he might undo the works of the devil.

⁴ ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.

¹ ¶ And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. ² And he laid hold on the dragon, the serpent of old, which is the Devil and Satan and bound him a thousand years ³ and cast him into the bottomless pit and shut him up and set a seal upon it, that he should deceive the Gentiles no more, until the thousand years should be fulfilled; and after it is necessary that he be loosed a little while.

³⁰ He that is not with me is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters abroad.

⁴⁰ For he that is not against us is for us.

⁵⁰ And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not, for he that is not against us is for us.

¹⁵ I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot; I would thou wert cold or hot. ¹⁶ So then because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

³⁷ Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the threshing floor; and if the dew is on the fleece only and it is dry upon all the earth beside it, then I shall know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand as thou hast said. ³⁸ And it was so, for he rose up early in the morning, and wringing the fleece, he took the dew out of it, a bowl full of water. ³⁹ But Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me if I speak again on this occasion; only let me prove again now with the fleece. I pray thee, let it be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. ⁴⁰ And God did so that night for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

⁷ And the LORD said unto Satan, Where dost thou come from? Then Satan answered the LORD and said, From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it.

¹ A Psalm of David,
when he was in the wilderness of Judah. ¶ O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee; my soul thirsts for thee; my flesh longs for thee in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water;

¹⁶ For they do not sleep, unless they have done evil; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause someone to fall.

¹ ¶ The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the lily. ² It shall blossom abundantly and shall also praise and sing for joy; the honour of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the beauty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD and the beauty of our God.

⁷ The parched ground shall become a pool and the thirsty land springs of water; in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

¹⁷ The poor and needy seek the waters that are not; their tongue fails for thirst; I the LORD will hear them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them. ¹⁸ I will open rivers in high places and fountains in the midst of the plains; I will turn the wilderness into pools of water and the dry land into springs of water. ¹⁹ I will bring forth in the wilderness cedars, thorns, myrtles, and olive trees; I will set in the desert the fir tree and the pine and the box tree together:

³ For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon thy seed and my blessing upon thine offspring:

²² There is no peace for the wicked, said the LORD.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the sea in tempest, that cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. ²¹ There is no peace, saith my God, for the wicked.

⁸ Then he said unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country and shall go down into the desert and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters of the sea shall be healed. ⁹ And it shall come to pass, that every living soul, which swims wherever these two rivers shall come, shall live; and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because of these waters going there: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live that shall enter into this river. ¹⁰ And it shall come to pass, that the fishermen shall stand next to it; and from Engedi even unto Eneglaim there shall be a place to spread forth nets; according to their kinds, their fish shall be as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many. ¹¹ But the miry places thereof and the marshes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt.

⁴³ When the unclean spirit is gone out of the man, it walks through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. ⁴⁴ Then it says, I will return into my house from which I came out; and when it is come, it finds it empty, swept, and garnished. ⁴⁵ Then it goes and takes with itself seven other spirits worse than itself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it also be unto this wicked generation.

¹⁰ And he besought him much that he would not send him away out of that country.

²⁵ When Jesus saw that the multitude concurred, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I command thee, come out of him and enter no more into him.

² in which in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the will of the prince of the power of this air, the spirit that now works in the sons of disobedience,

⁸ ¶ Be temperate and vigilant because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour,

¹⁷ Now after the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and worshipped the king. Then the king hearkened unto them. ¹⁸ And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers and served groves and idols, and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for their guilt. ¹⁹ Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again unto the LORD, and they testified against them, but they would not give ear. ²⁰ And the Spirit of God clothed himself in Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada, the priest, who being over the people, said unto them, Thus hath God said, Why do ye transgress the commandments of the LORD? Ye shall not prosper in this; for because ye have forsaken the LORD, he shall also forsake you. ²¹ And they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD. ²² Thus Joash, the king, did not remember the mercy which Jehoiada, his father, had done to him but slew his son; who said when he died, The LORD look upon it and require it.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he has left off to be wise and to do good.

¹¹ But my people did not hearken to my voice, and Israel did not love me. ¹² So I gave them up unto the hardness of their heart, and they walked in their own counsels.

⁵ As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall take them away with the workers of iniquity; and peace shall be upon Israel.

⁹ that wicked one, who shall come by the working of Satan with great power and signs and lying miracles, ¹⁰ and with all deception of iniquity working in those that perish because they did not receive the charity of the truth, to be saved. ¹¹ Therefore, for this cause, God shall send the operation of error in them, that they should believe the lie; ¹² that they all might be condemned who did not believe the truth, but consented to the iniquity.

¹⁰ ¶ and chiefly those that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise dominion; presumptuous, arrogant, they are not afraid to speak evil of the higher powers; ¹¹ whereas even the angels, who are greater in power and might, bring no curse of judgment against them before the Lord. ¹² But these, speaking evil of the things that they do not understand (as natural animals without reason, who are made to be taken and destroyed), shall utterly perish in their own corruption, ¹³ receiving the reward of their unrighteousness, as those that count it pleasure to live luxuriously every day. These are spots and blemishes, who eat together with you, while at the same time they revel in their deceit, ¹⁴ having their eyes full of adultery, and not knowing how to cease from sin, baiting unstable souls, having their heart exercised in covetous practices; cursed sons, ¹⁵ who forsaking the right way have erred, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness, ¹⁶ and was rebuked for his iniquity; a dumb animal accustomed to a yoke (upon which he was seated), speaking with man’s voice, hindered the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are wells without water, clouds that are brought by a whirlwind, to whom gross darkness is reserved for ever. ¹⁸ For speaking arrogant words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from those who converse in error, ¹⁹ promising them liberty, being they themselves the slaves of corruption: for he who is overcome by someone is subject to bondage by the one that overcame him.

⁸ ¶ In the same manner these deceived dreamers, defile their flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of higher powers. ⁹ Yet when Michael, the archangel, contended with the devil, disputing over the body of Moses, he dared not bring against him a curse of judgment, but said, The Lord reprehend thee. ¹⁰ But these speak evil of those things which they do not know; but what they know by nature as animals without reason, in those things they corrupt themselves. ¹¹ Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward and perished in the gainsaying of Core. ¹² These are spots in your banquets of charity, feeding themselves without any fear whatsoever: clouds without water, carried to and fro of the winds; trees withered as in fall, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; ¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own abominations; erratic stars, to whom is reserved gross darkness eternally.

⁶ and those that have turned back from following the LORD and those that did not seek the LORD, nor enquired about him.

⁴⁵ Then it goes and takes with itself seven other spirits worse than itself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it also be unto this wicked generation.

¹⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

¹⁴ Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

⁴ For it is impossible that those who once received the light and tasted of that heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit ⁵ and likewise have tasted the good word of God and the virtue of the age to come, ⁶ and have backslidden, be renewed again by repentance, crucifying again for themselves the Son of God and putting him to an open shame. ⁷ For the earth which drinks in the rain that comes often upon it and brings forth herbs in season for those by whom it is dressed receives blessing from God; ⁸ but that which bears thorns and briers is rejected and is near unto cursing, whose end shall be by fire.

²⁶ For if we sin wilfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a certain fearful hope of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. ²⁸ He that despised the law of Moses died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much greater punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden underfoot the Son of God and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing and has done despite unto the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know who he is that has said, Vengeance belongs to me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

²⁰ Certainly, if having separated themselves from the contaminations of the world, by the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they again entangle themselves therein and are overcome, their latter end is made worse for them than the beginnings. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog returns unto his own vomit, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

¹⁶ If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask God, and he shall give him life that is, unto those that do not sin unto death. There is sin unto death, for which I do not say that you should pray.

²⁸ And the angel came in unto her and said, Hail, thou that art much graced, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women.

⁴² and she spoke out with a loud voice and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

⁴⁸ for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden; for, behold, from now on all generations shall call me blessed.

²⁹ For, behold, the days are coming, in which they shall say, Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bare and the breasts which never gave suck.

¹ ¶ Blessed is the man that does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful. ² But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in his law he meditates day and night. ³ And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

¹ ¶ Aleph Halelu-JAH. Blessed is the man that fears the LORD, Beth that delights greatly in his commandments.

¹ ¶ ALEPH. Blessed are those who walk in the perfect way, who walk in the law of the LORD. ² Blessed are those that keep his testimonies and that seek him with their whole heart. ³ For those who do no iniquity walk in his ways. ⁴ ¶ Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently. ⁵ O that my ways were ordered to keep thy statutes! ⁶ Then I shall not be ashamed, when I have insight unto all thy commandments.

¹ A Song of degrees. ¶ Blessed is every one that fears the LORD, that walks in his ways.

¹⁷ Thus has the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel said: I am the LORD thy God who teaches thee to profit, who causes thee to walk by the way in which thou dost walk. ¹⁸ O that thou would look unto my commandments! Then thy peace would be as a river and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:

²¹ ¶ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in the heavens. ²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? ²³ And then I will profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity. ²⁴ Therefore, whosoever hears these words of mine and does them, I will liken him unto a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock; ²⁵ and the rain descended, and the rivers came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded upon a rock.

⁴⁸ But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brothers? ⁴⁹ And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brothers! ⁵⁰ For whosoever shall do the will of my Father who is in the heavens, the same is my brother and sister and mother.

⁴⁷ Whosoever comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you to whom he is like: ⁴⁸ he is like a man who built a house and dug deep and laid the foundation upon rock; and when the flood arose, the river beat vehemently upon that house and could not shake it, for it was founded upon rock.

²¹ And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word of God and do it.

¹⁷ If ye know these things, ye shall be blessed if ye do them.

²¹ So then, leave all uncleanness and remains of malice and receive with meekness the word ingested within you, which is able to cause your souls to be saved. ²² But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. ²³ For if anyone hears the word and does not put it into practice, this same is like unto the man beholding his natural face in a mirror: ²⁴ For he considered himself and went his way and in one hour forgot what he was like. ²⁵ But whosoever has looked attentively into the perfect law of liberty and has persevered in it, not being a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, the same shall be blessed in their deed.

²¹ Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence in God; ²² and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. ²³ ¶ And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he has commanded us. ²⁴ And he that keeps his commandments dwells in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given us.

¹⁴ Blessed are those who do his commandments that their power and authority might be in the tree of life and they may enter in through the gates into the city.

³ ¶ But come here, ye sons of the sorceress, generation of the adulterer and the whore. ⁴ Against whom do ye sport yourselves? Against whom do ye make a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? Are ye not rebellious sons, a lying seed of transgression,

⁷ ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come?

³⁸ ¶ Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we desire to see a sign from thee. ³⁹ But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there no sign shall be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah; ⁴⁰ for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

³⁴ ¶ Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets and wise men and scribes, and some of them ye shall kill and crucify, and some of them ye shall scourge in your synagogues and persecute them from city to city, ³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

³⁸ Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

⁴¹ And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and suffer you? Bring thy son here.

¹⁶ And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,

¹ ¶ In the meantime, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

²⁵ ¶ And great multitudes went with him, and he turned and said unto them, ²⁶ If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brethren and sisters, and even his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

¹⁸ Then the Jews answered and said unto him, What sign showest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father ye desire to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.

⁵¹ ¶ Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do ye. ⁵² Who of the prophets have your fathers not persecuted? and they have slain those who announced before the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have now been the betrayers and murderers,

¹⁷ Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

¹⁰ ¶ And the LORD spoke unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

² Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. ³ So Jonah arose and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey. ⁴ And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be destroyed. ⁵ ¶ So the people of Nineveh believed God and proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. ⁶ For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he threw his robe from him and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. ⁷ And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing; let them not feed, nor drink water: ⁸ but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth and cry mightily unto God; and let each one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. ⁹ Who can tell if God will turn and repent and turn away from his fierce anger, that we not perish? ¹⁰ And God saw their works, because they turned from their evil way, and he repented of the evil that he had said that he would do unto them, and he did not do it.

⁴⁶ and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day; ⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

¹ ¶ And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with enigmas. ² And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bore spices and very much gold and precious stones; and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart. ³ And Solomon told her all her questions; there was not any thing hid from the king, which he did not tell her. ⁴ And when the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon’s wisdom and the house that he had built, ⁵ likewise the food of his table and the sitting of his slaves and the attendance of his ministers and their apparel, and his butlers and his burnt offering which he sacrificed in the house of the LORD, there was no more spirit in her. ⁶ And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in my own land of thy words and of thy wisdom. ⁷ But I did not believe it until I came, and my eyes have seen that not even the half was told me. Thy wisdom and good exceeds the fame which I heard. ⁸ Blessed are thy men, blessed are these thy slaves, who stand continually before thee and that hear thy wisdom. ⁹ Blessed be the LORD thy God, who delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel; because the LORD has always loved Israel, therefore he made thee king, to do justice and righteousness. ¹⁰ And she gave the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold and a very great store of spices and precious stones; never again did there come such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon. ¹¹ And the navy of Hiram, that had brought the gold from Ophir, also brought in from Ophir a great plenty of brazil wood and precious stones. ¹² And the king made of the brazil wood banisters for the house of the LORD and for the king’s houses, harps also and psalteries for the singers; there never had been such brazil wood, nor was it seen again unto this day. ¹³ And King Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her slaves.

¹ ¶ And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with enigmas at Jerusalem, with a very great host and camels that bore spices and gold in abundance and precious stones. And when she was come to Solomon, she spoke with him of all that was in her heart.

⁶ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government is placed upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called The Wonderful One, The Counsellor, The God, The Mighty One, The Eternal Father, The Prince of Peace. ⁷ The multitude of his dominion and the peace shall have no end upon the throne of David and upon his Kingdom, ordering it and confirming it in judgment and in righteousness from now on even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of the hosts will perform this.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the slaves of the LORD, and their justice from me, said the LORD.

¹¹ And the LORD said unto me, The rebellious Israel has justified her soul in comparison to the treacherous Judah.

⁴² The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation and shall condemn it, for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

²² and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee is my delight.

³⁵ And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.

²⁷ And that which is by nature foreskin, but keeps the law perfectly, shall judge thee who with the letter and with the circumcision art rebellious to the law.

¹⁵ who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature; ¹⁶ for by him were all things created, that are in the heavens and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they are thrones or dominions or principalities or powers: all things were created by him and in him; ¹⁷ And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. ¹⁸ And he is the head of the body, the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence. ¹⁹ For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell

⁷ By faith Noah, having received revelation of things not seen as yet, with great care prepared an ark to the saving of his house, by which he condemned the world and was made heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

² Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. ³ But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD and went down to Joppa, and he found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish fleeing from the presence of the LORD.

⁵ ¶ So the people of Nineveh believed God and proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

⁹ And God said to Jonah, Art thou so angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

³¹ The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment against the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

²⁶ For it was expedient that we have such a high priest, who is holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens,

¹⁵ Neither do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on the lampstand, and it gives light unto all that are in the house. ¹⁶ Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.

²⁷ What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light, and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye from the housetops.

²¹ ¶ And he also said unto them, Is the lamp brought to be put under the bushel or under the bed? and not to be set in the lampstand? ²² For there is nothing hid which shall not be manifested; nor secret which shall not be exposed.

¹⁶ No one when they have lighted a lamp cover it with a vessel or put it under a bed, but set it on a lampstand, that those who enter in may see the light. ¹⁷ For nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest, neither any thing hid that shall not be known and come to light.

⁹ Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.

⁴⁶ I am come as a light into the world that whosoever believes in me should not abide in darkness.

¹⁵ that ye may be blameless and innocent, children of God without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world, ¹⁶ holding fast the word of life, that I may glory in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

¹¹ And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

¹⁵ And when the servant of the man of God was risen early to go forth, behold, a host compassed the city both with horsemen and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! What shall we do? ¹⁶ And he answered, Fear not; for those that are with us are more than those that are with them. ¹⁷ And Elisha prayed and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horsemen and chariots of fire round about Elisha. ¹⁸ And when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD and said, Smite these people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. ¹⁹ And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. And he led them to Samaria. ²⁰ And when they came into Samaria, Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

¹² So I gave them up unto the hardness of their heart, and they walked in their own counsels.

¹⁸ ¶ Open my eyes, and I shall behold the wonders of thy law.

²² ¶ He that hastens to be rich has an evil eye and does not consider that poverty shall come upon him.

¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat and make their ears heavy and blind their eyes that they not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their heart, nor convert and there be healing for him.

¹⁰ For the LORD has extended upon you the spirit of deep sleep and has closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, he has covered the seers with sleep.

¹⁹ Who is blind, but my slave? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? Who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the slave of the LORD,

¹⁸ They did not know nor understand; for he has anointed their eyes that they not see and their hearts that they not understand.

²¹ Hear now this, O foolish people and without heart, who have eyes and do not see; who have ears, and do not hear:

²² The lamp of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye is sincere, thy whole body shall be full of light. ²³ But if thine eye is evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If, therefore, the light that is in thee is darkness, how great is that darkness!

¹² that seeing they may see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand, lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.

²² the thefts, the covetousness, the wickedness, the deceit, the lasciviousness, the evil eye, the slander, the pride, the unwiseness:

¹⁸ Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?

⁴⁶ And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food together with gladness and singleness of heart,

¹¹ And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is against thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness, and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

¹⁸ to open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and inheritance among those who are sanctified by the faith that is in me.

⁸ (according as it is written, God has given them the spirit of anguish, eyes with which they do not see and ears with which they do not hear) unto this day. ⁹ And David says, Let their table be turned into a snare and a net and a stumblingblock and a recompense unto them; ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened that they may not see, and bow down their back always.

¹² ¶ For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world and more abundantly towards you.

⁴ In whom the god of this age has blinded the understanding of those who do not believe, that the light of the gospel of the glory of the Christ, who is the image of God, should not shine in them.

³ But I fear that as the serpent deceived Eve through his craftiness, so your senses should be corrupted in some way, and ye should fall from the simplicity that is in the Christ.

¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him;

⁵ Slaves, be obedient to those that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in simplicity of your heart as unto the Christ,

²² Slaves, in all things hearken unto your masters according to the flesh, not serving to be seen as those who only please men, but in simplicity of heart, fearing God;

²⁵ ¶ There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

¹² ¶ Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

²⁰ Woe unto those that call evil good and good evil; that put darkness for light and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! ²¹ Woe unto those that are wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight!

⁸ How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Behold, certainly in vain did he make the pen; the scribes were in vain. ⁹ The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

⁴⁸ Have any of the princes or of the Pharisees believed on him? ⁴⁹ But this people who do not know the law are cursed.

³⁹ ¶ And Jesus said, For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see might see and that those who see might be blinded. ⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words and said unto him, Are we blind also? ⁴¹ Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin; but now because ye say, We see, therefore your sin abides.

²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools

¹⁹ and art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of those who are in darkness, ²⁰ an instructor of the ignorant, a teacher of children, who hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. ²¹ Thou, therefore, who teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? ²² Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? Thou that dost abhor idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? ²³ Thou that makest thy boast of the law, with rebellion to the law doth thou dishonour God?

¹⁹ For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. ²⁰ Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the philosopher of this world? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? ²¹ For in the wisdom of God, since the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save those that believe.

¹⁸ ¶ Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you seems to be wise in this age, let them become a fool that they may be wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He takes the wise in their own craftiness. ²⁰ And again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

¹³ ¶ Who is wise and ready among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not and do not be liars against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not that which descends from above, but is earthly, natural, diabolical. ¹⁶ For where there is envy and contention, there is confusion and every perverse work. ¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, modest, benevolent, full of mercy and of good fruits, not judgmental, unfeigned.

⁹ But he that lacks these things is blind and walks feeling the way with his hand, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

¹⁸ For speaking arrogant words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from those who converse in error,

¹⁷ Because thou sayest, I am rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing and knowest not that thou art wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked,

⁹⁷ ¶ MEM. O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day. ⁹⁸ ¶ Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies, for they are eternal unto me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers, for thy testimonies have been my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the elders because I keep thy precepts. ¹⁰¹ ¶ I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. ¹⁰² ¶ I have not departed from thy judgments, for thou hast taught me. ¹⁰³ ¶ How sweet have been thy spoken words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! ¹⁰⁴ Through thy precepts I have obtained understanding; therefore I have hated every false way. ¹⁰⁵ ¶ NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my way.

⁵ If the wise will hear them, doctrine shall increase, and the man of understanding shall acquire wise counsel:

¹ ¶ My son, if thou wilt receive my words and hide my commandments within thee ² so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom and apply thine heart to intelligence, ³ yea, if thou criest for understanding and givest thy voice unto intelligence, ⁴ if thou seekest her as silver and searchest for her as for hid treasures, ⁵ then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD gives wisdom; out of his mouth comes knowledge and intelligence. ⁷ He keeps the person of the upright; he is a buckler to those that walk perfectly, ⁸ keeping the paths of judgment and the way of his merciful ones. ⁹ Then shalt thou understand righteousness and judgment and equity, yea, every good path. ¹⁰ ¶ When wisdom enters into thine heart and knowledge is sweet unto thy soul, ¹¹ discretion shall preserve thee, intelligence shall keep thee

¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the light of the morning star, that shines more and more until the day is perfect. ¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness; they do not know in what they stumble.

²³ For the commandment is fire, and the law is light; and reproofs of chastening are the way of life,

²⁷ ¶ The spirit of man is the fire of the LORD, which searches the secrets of the inward parts.

²⁰ To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

¹⁶ And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will cause them to walk in paths that they have not known; I will make darkness light before them and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them and not forsake them.

³ And we shall know and follow on in knowing the LORD; his going forth is prepared as the dawn; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

¹¹ He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not given. ¹² For whosoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have in abundance; but whosoever has not, from him shall be taken away even that which he has.

⁵² And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who is instructed in the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a man, a husband of a house, who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.

²⁴ And he also said unto them, Take heed what ye hear; with the measure ye measure by, ye shall be measured by others, and unto you that hear shall more be added. ²⁵ For he that has, to him shall be given; and he that has not, from him shall be taken even that which he has.

⁶ For the God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts to bring forth the light of the knowledge of the clarity of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

¹⁴ That we no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men and cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive,

¹⁶ Let the word of the Christ dwell in you in abundance in all wisdom, teaching you and exhorting you one to another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with grace singing in your hearts unto the Lord.

¹⁵ and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto saving health by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, ¹⁷ that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

¹⁴ But strong food belongs to those that are perfect, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

²⁵ But whosoever has looked attentively into the perfect law of liberty and has persevered in it, not being a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, the same shall be blessed in their deed.

¹⁸ But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and until the day of eternity. Amen.

³⁶ ¶ And one of the Pharisees asked him if he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house and sat down to food.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass as he went into the house of one of the princes of the Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day that they watched him.

¹⁹ ¶ Therefore, though I am free regarding everyone, yet I have made myself slave unto all, that I might gain the more. ²⁰ And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to those that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain those that are under the law; ²¹ to those that are without law, as without law (being not without law of God, but under the law of Christ), that I might gain those that are without law. ²² To the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak; I am made all things to everyone, that I might by all means save some. ²³ And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker together of it.

² Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. ³ But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

² who upon seeing some of his disciples eat bread with common, that is to say, with unwashed, hands, they condemned them. ³ (For the Pharisees and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands often, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. ⁴ And when they come from the market, unless they wash, they eat not. And there are many other things which they took upon themselves to hold such as the washing of cups and pots, brasen vessels and of tables.) ⁵ Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why do thy disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders but eat bread with unwashed hands?

²⁵ Then there arose a question between the disciples of John and the Jews about purifying.

⁵ And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

² And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.

²⁰ And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah and wrought that which was good and right and true before the LORD his God. ²¹ And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God and in the law and in the commandments, he sought God and he did it with all his heart and was prospered.

¹³ They opened their mouth upon me as a ravening and a roaring lion.

²⁵ when he speaks fair, do not believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart.

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness that thou may be saved. How long shalt thou entertain the thoughts of thy iniquity within thee?

²⁵ There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken treasures and honour; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof.

²⁷ Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to follow their own greed.

³ Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they do not leave a bone for tomorrow.

¹⁵ ¶ Keep yourselves also from the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

³³ Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree corrupt and its fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by its fruit. ³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ³⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things, and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

¹⁹ For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

²⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup or of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and incontinence. ²⁶ Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also.

¹³ And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said unto her, Weep not.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Ye are they who justify themselves before men, but God knows your hearts, for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

⁶ This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief and had the bag and would take from what was put therein.

² And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,

³ But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to defraud of the price of the land?

²¹ Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. ²² Repent therefore of this thy wickedness and pray God, if perhaps this thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. ²³ For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the prison of iniquity.

¹⁴ And profited in Judaism above many of my equals in my own nation, being exceedingly more zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

⁵ having the appearance of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

¹⁵ For unto the pure all things are pure, but unto those that are defiled and unfaithful, nothing is pure, but even their soul and conscience is defiled.

⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

²⁶ ¶ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over the beasts and over all the earth and over every serpent that moves upon the earth.

⁷ And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.

²² And they fell upon their faces and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?

¹ To the Overcomer,
A Psalm of David. ¶ The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is no one that does good.

¹⁵ He fashioned all of their hearts; he considers all their works.

⁴ I said unto the fools, Do not deal foolishly and to the wicked, Do not lift up the horn: ⁵ Do not lift up your horn on high; speak not with a stiff neck.

⁸ Understand, ye carnal ones among the people, and, ye fools, when will ye be wise? ⁹ He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and the fools hate knowledge?

⁵ O ye simple, understand prudence; and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

¹ ¶ The burden of the word of the LORD upon Israel, said the LORD, who stretches forth the heavens and lays the foundation of the earth and forms the spirit of man within him.

¹⁷ Ye fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

²⁶ Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up?

²⁵ Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken;

³⁶ Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not brought to life, unless it dies first;

⁹ Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence; is it not much better to be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and we shall live?

⁸ but thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he lacks. ⁹ Keep thyself that there not be a thought of Belial in thy heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother to give him nothing; for he shall cry unto the LORD against thee, and it shall be a sin unto thee. ¹⁰ Thou shalt surely give unto him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him because for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works and in all that thou puttest thine hand to.

¹⁶ He also shall be my saving health; for the hypocrite shall not enter into his presence. ¹⁷ Hear diligently my reason and my declaration with your ears. ¹⁸ Behold now, if I draw near unto the judgment; I know that I shall be justified. ¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me? For now, if I remain silent, I shall die. ²⁰ At the least, grant me these two things; then I will not hide myself from thee:

A Psalm of David. ¶ Blessed is he that understands regarding the poor; the LORD will deliver him in the day of evil.

⁹ Pe He has dispersed; he has given to the poor; Tzaddi his righteousness endures for ever; Koph his horn shall be exalted in glory.

³¹ ¶ He that oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he that has mercy on the poor, honours him.

¹⁷ ¶ He that gives unto the poor lends unto the LORD, and he will give him his reward.

¹ ¶ Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days. ² Give a portion to seven and even to eight, for thou dost not know what evil shall come upon the earth.

⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother? ⁸ ¶ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall gather thee. ⁹ Then shalt thou call, and thou shalt hear the LORD; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; ¹⁰ and if thou pour out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: ¹¹ And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

²⁷ Therefore, O king, approve my counsel and redeem thy sins with righteousness and thine iniquities with mercies unto the poor: behold the medicine for thy sin.

⁴² Give to him that asks of thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

¹ ¶ Take heed not to do your alms {lit. acts of mercy} before men, to be seen of them; otherwise, ye have no reward of your Father who is in the heavens. ² Therefore, when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They already have their reward. ³ But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth ⁴ that thine alms may be in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret, he shall reward thee openly.

³⁴ Then shall the King say unto those on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; ³⁵ for I was hungry, and ye gave me food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; ³⁶ naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me. ³⁷ Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee? or thirsty and give thee drink? ³⁸ When did we see thee a stranger and take thee in? or naked and clothe thee? ³⁹ Or when did we see thee sick or in prison and come unto thee? ⁴⁰ And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, ye have done it unto me.

¹¹ For ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always.

³³ Sell what ye have and give alms; {lit. do acts of mercy}; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that fails not, where no thief approaches neither moth corrupts.

¹² Then said he also to him that invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen nor thy rich neighbours, lest they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made thee. ¹³ But when thou makest a banquet, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, ¹⁴ and thou shalt be blessed, for they cannot recompense thee; for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

⁹ And I say unto you, Make friends unto yourselves with the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when these fail, you may be received into eternal dwellings.

²² Now when Jesus heard this, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.

⁸ Then Zacchaeus stood and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

³⁶ ¶ Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas; this woman was full of good works and alms-deeds {lit. acts of mercy} which she did. ³⁷ And it came to pass in those days that she was sick and died, whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. ³⁸ And since as Lydda was close to Joppa and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, asking him that he not delay to come to them. ³⁹ Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas had made them while she was with them.

¹⁵ And the voice spoke unto him again the second time, That which God has cleansed, do not call common.

³¹ and said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. ³² Send therefore to Joppa, and call here Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side, who, when he comes, shall speak unto thee.

²⁹ Then the disciples, each one according to what he had, determined to send relief unto the brethren who dwelt in Judea,

¹⁷ Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation and offerings.

¹⁴ I know and trust in the Lord Jesus that for his sake there is nothing unclean, but to him that esteems any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. ¹⁵ But if thy brother is grieved because of thy food, now thou dost not walk in charity. Do not destroy him with thy food, for whom Christ died. ¹⁶ Let not then your good be evil spoken of; ¹⁷ for the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. ¹⁸ For he that in these things serves the Christ is well pleasing unto God and approved of men.

⁷ ¶ Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith and in word and in knowledge and in all diligence and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. ⁸ I speak not as commanding, but by occasion of the diligence of others and to prove the sincerity of your charity. ⁹ For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor that ye through his poverty might be enriched.

¹² For if there is first a willing desire, it is accepted according to what a person has and not according to what they do not have.

⁶ ¶ But this I say, He who sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly, and he who sows in blessings shall also reap blessings. ⁷ Each one according as they purpose in their heart, so let them give, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. ⁸ And God is able to make all grace abound in you that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: ⁹ As it is written, He has dispersed abroad; he has given to the poor; his righteousness remains for ever. ¹⁰ Now he that supplies seed to the sower shall also supply bread for food and shall multiply your seed sown and shall increase the growing of the fruits of your righteousness, ¹¹ so that being enriched in everything to all generosity, which works out through us thanksgiving unto God. ¹² For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also abounds in much thanksgiving unto God; ¹³ that by the experience of this ministration, they glorify God for the obedience of your consent unto the gospel of the Christ and in your liberal distribution unto them and unto everyone, ¹⁴ and in their prayer for you, for they love you because of the eminent grace of God in you. ¹⁵ Thanks be unto God for his indescribable gift.

²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more, but rather let him labour, working with his hands that which is good, that he may have to give to him that is in need.

⁴ For everything that God created is good, and nothing is to be refused, if it is received with thanksgiving, ⁵ for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

¹⁰ For God is not unjust to forget your work and labour of charity which ye have showed in his name, having helped the saints and helping them.

¹⁶ Do not forget to do good and to fellowship; for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

²⁷ The pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation and to keep thyself unspotted from this world.

¹⁴ ¶ My brethren, What shall it profit though someone says that they have faith and do not have works? Shall this type of faith be able to save them? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you says unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; but ye do not give them those things which are needful for the body; what shall it profit them?

¹⁶ In this we have known the charity of God because he laid down his life for us; we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. ¹⁷ But whosoever has this world’s goods and sees his brother have need and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how does the charity of God abide in him?

³⁰ And all the tithes of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s; it is holiness unto the LORD. ³¹ And if anyone desires to redeem anything of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof. ³² And concerning the tithe of the cows or of the sheep, even of whatever passes under the rod, the tenth shall be holiness unto the LORD. ³³ He shall not search whether it is good or bad, neither shall he change it; and if he changes it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.

¹² ¶ And now, Israel, what does the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways and to love him and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, ¹³ to keep the commandments of the LORD and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

²² And Samuel said, Does the LORD have as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in hearing the voice of the LORD? Behold, to hear is better than sacrifice and to hearken than the fat of rams.

⁵ And as soon as the commandment burst forth and multiplied, an abundance of firstfruits of grain, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field was multiplied unto the sons of Israel; and likewise, they brought in the tithe, of all things in abundance. ⁶ Also the sons of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the cities of Judah, gave in the same manner the tithe of the cows and the sheep, and the tithe of that which was sanctified of the things which had been promised unto the LORD their God, and laid them in heaps. ⁷ In the third month they began to found those heaps, and they finished them in the seventh month. ⁸ And when Hezekiah and the princes came and saw the heaps, they blessed the LORD and his people Israel. ⁹ Then Hezekiah questioned the priests and the Levites concerning the heaps. ¹⁰ And Azariah, the high priest of the house of Zadok, answered him and said, Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have eaten and been satisfied and have had an abundance left over; for the LORD has blessed his people, and that which is left is this great store.

³⁷ And that we would also bring the firstfruits of our dough and of our offerings and the fruit of every tree, of the wine and of the oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God, and the tithe of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tenths of our labours in all the cities.

³ ¶ To do righteousness and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

¹⁸ It is good that thou should take hold of this; and also from the other not withdraw thy hand; for he that fears God shall come through with everything.

¹⁰ ¶ Hear the word of the LORD, ye princes of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. ¹¹ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? shall the LORD say. I am full of the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; and I do not delight in the blood of bullocks or of lambs or of he goats. ¹² When ye come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to tread my courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain oblations; the incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot stand them; iniquity and the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. ¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; likewise, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear; your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ ¶ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ learn to do good; seek judgment; restore unto the oppressed; hear the fatherless in right judgment; protect the widow.

² That they seek me daily and want to know my ways, as people that do righteousness and have not forsaken the rights of their God: they ask me of the rights of righteousness and desire to approach God. ³ ¶ Why have we fasted, they say, and thou dost not see? why have we afflicted our soul, and thou dost take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find your own pleasure and exact your own estates. ⁴ Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day to make your voice to be heard on high. ⁵ Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast and an acceptable day to the LORD? ⁶ Is not rather the fast that I have chosen, to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the ties of oppression, to release into freedom those who are broken, and that ye break every yoke?

² Stand in the gate of the LORD’s house and proclaim there this word and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all ye of Judah that enter in at these gates to worship the LORD. ³ Thus hath the LORD of the hosts the God of Israel said, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. ⁴ Do not trust in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD are these. ⁵ For if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if ye thoroughly do right between a man and his neighbour, ⁶ if ye do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed no innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt, ⁷ then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers for ever and ever. ⁸ Behold, ye trust in lying words that cannot profit. ⁹ Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not, ¹⁰ and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are free to do all these abominations?

²¹ ¶ Thus hath the LORD of the hosts, the God of Israel said: Add your burnt offerings upon your sacrifices and eat flesh. ²² For I did not speak unto your fathers, nor command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

⁸ He has declared unto thee, O man, what is good and what the LORD requires of thee: only to do right judgment, and to love mercy, and to humble thyself to walk with thy God.

⁶ ¶ The son honours his father and the slave his master; if then I am a father, where is my honour? and if I am a master, where is my fear? said the LORD of the hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, In what have we despised thy name?

¹⁷ Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, In what have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that does evil pleases the LORD, and he delights in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?

⁸ Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, In what have we robbed thee? In the tithes and the offerings.

¹³ ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens in front of men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye those that are entering to go in.

²³ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin and have omitted that which is more important of the law: judgment, mercy, and faith; these were expedient for ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

²⁷ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whitewashed sepulchres, who indeed appear beautiful outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness.

¹² I fast two meals every sabbath; I give tithes of all that I possess.

⁴² But I know you that ye have not the love of God in you.

¹¹ ¶ For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, ¹² teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live temperately, righteously, and godly in this present world;

²⁰ If anyone says, I love God and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he that does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

¹⁸ ¶ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

⁶ and love the first place at feasts and the chief seats in the synagogues ⁷ and greetings in the markets and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

³⁸ And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, who love to go in long clothing and love the salutations in the marketplaces ³⁹ and the first chairs in the synagogues and the first seats at the suppers,

⁷ ¶ And observing how they chose the first seats at the table, he put forth a parable to those who were invited, saying unto them, ⁸ When thou art called to a wedding by anyone, do not sit down in the highest place, lest a more honourable man than thou be invited of him, ⁹ and he that called thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place, and thou begin with shame to have the lowest place. ¹⁰ But when thou art called, go and sit down in the lowest place that when he that invited thee comes, he may say unto thee, Friend, come up higher; then shalt thou have glory in the presence of those that sit at the table with thee. ¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

⁴⁶ Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes and love greetings in the markets and the first seats in the synagogues and the first places at suppers;

¹⁰ loving one another with brotherly love, with honour preferring one another;

³ Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in humility let each esteem others better than themselves,

² For if a man with a gold ring and in precious apparel comes into your synagogue and a poor person in vile raiment also comes in, ³ and ye have respect to him that wears the precious clothing and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there or sit here under my footstool: ⁴ Are ye not then judging in yourselves and are become judges of evil thoughts?

⁹ ¶ I wrote unto the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, did not receive us.

¹⁶ And whoever touches one that is slain with a sword in the open fields or a dead body or a human bone or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.

⁹ For there is no uprightness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.

⁸ The watchman of Ephraim regarding my God, the prophet, is a snare of a fowler in all his ways, hatred in the house of his God.

²⁷ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whitewashed sepulchres, who indeed appear beautiful outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness. ²⁸ Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

³ Then Paul said unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whitewashed wall, for dost thou sit to judge me after the law and command me to be smitten contrary to the law?

⁸ And the king of Israel replied unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah, the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the LORD; but I hate him, for he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

¹⁰ To whom shall I speak, and give warning that they may hear? behold, their ears are uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken, behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.

⁸ For since I spoke out, I raised my voice crying, Violence and destruction; because the word of the LORD has been a reproach unto me and a derision, daily.

¹⁰ ¶ Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos has conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. ¹¹ For thus hath Amos said, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. ¹² And Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and eat thy bread there, and prophesy there: ¹³ but do not prophesy any more in Bethel: for it is the king’s sanctuary, and the head of the kingdom.

³⁵ And one of them, who was an interpreter of the law, asked him a question, tempting him and saying,

⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye burden men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

⁵² Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and those that were entering in, ye hindered.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify of it that its works are evil.

⁴⁸ Have any of the princes or of the Pharisees believed on him?

⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words and said unto him, Are we blind also?

¹ ¶ Woe unto those that establish unrighteous laws and that wilfully prescribe tyranny

⁶ Is not rather the fast that I have chosen, to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the ties of oppression, to release into freedom those who are broken, and that ye break every yoke?

² saying, The scribes and the Pharisees have sat down in Moses’ seat; ³ therefore, whatever they bid you to observe, observe it and do it, but do not act according to their works, for they say and do not do it. ⁴ For they bind burdens that are heavy and grievous to bear and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

⁴⁵ Then one of the lawyers answered and said unto him, Master, saying these things, thou dost reproach us also.

¹³ For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law, but desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh.

²⁹ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the sepulchres of the righteous ³⁰ and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. ³¹ Therefore ye are witnesses unto yourselves that ye are the sons of those who murdered the prophets. ³² Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. ³³ Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the judgment of hell?

⁵¹ ¶ Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do ye.

¹⁵ who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and have persecuted us, and they do not please God and are contrary to all men,

²² And Joshua said unto the people, Ye shall be witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We shall be witnesses.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and misused his prophets until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, and there was no remedy.

⁸ So they shall make their own council and agreements to fall upon themselves; all that see them shall flee away.

¹⁹ Yet if ye say, Why does not the son bear the iniquity of the father? Because the son has lived according to judgment and righteousness and has kept all my statutes and has done them, he shall surely live.

³⁵ And the husbandmen took his slaves and beat one and killed another and stoned another. ³⁶ Again, he sent other slaves more than the first, and they did unto them likewise. ³⁷ But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ³⁸ But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us take his inheritance.

³¹ Therefore ye are witnesses unto yourselves that ye are the sons of those who murdered the prophets.

³⁵ women received their dead raised to life again, and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance that they might obtain a better resurrection; ³⁶ and others experienced cruel mockings and scourgings, and added to this, bonds and imprisonment; ³⁷ they were stoned; they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword; they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; poor, afflicted, mistreated, ³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy); they wandered in deserts and in mountains and in dens and caves of the earth.

¹⁰ Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

² to know wisdom and chastening; to understand prudent words; ³ to receive the chastening of prudence, justice, judgment, and equity; ⁴ to give prudence to the simple, and to the young men knowledge and council. ⁵ If the wise will hear them, doctrine shall increase, and the man of understanding shall acquire wise counsel: ⁶ To understand a parable and the interpretation; the words of the wise and their enigmas.

¹ ¶ Doth not wisdom cry, and give her voice to intelligence? ² She stands in the top of high places, by the way at the crossroads of the paths. ³ She cries at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. ⁴ Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of men. ⁵ O ye simple, understand prudence; and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart. ⁶ Hear, for I will speak of excellent things, and the opening of my lips shall be right things. ⁷ For my mouth shall speak truth, and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. ⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing perverse or twisted in them. ⁹ They are all plain to him that understands and right to those that have found wisdom. ¹⁰ Receive my chastening and not silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold. ¹¹ For wisdom is better than precious stones; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. ¹² ¶ I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I invent the knowledge of giving counsel.

¹ ¶ Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn out her seven pillars: ² She has killed her sacrifice; she has mingled her wine; and she has furnished her table. ³ She has sent forth her maidens; she cries upon the highest places of the city,

⁶ and the others took his slaves and entreated them spitefully and slew them.

¹⁶ And ye shall be betrayed both by parents and brethren and kinsfolk and friends, and some of you they shall cause to be put to death. ¹⁷ And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake.

⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

² They shall put you out of the synagogues, and the hour will even come when whosoever kills you will think that he does God service.

⁸ But ye shall receive the virtue of the Holy Spirit which shall come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judaea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

⁵⁷ And crying out with a loud voice, they stopped their ears and ran upon him with one accord;

³ As for Saul, he made havoc of the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}; entering into the houses and dragging out men and women, he committed them to prison.

¹ ¶ And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, came unto the prince of the priests ² and asked him for letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

¹ ¶ Now at that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to mistreat certain of the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}. ² And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

⁴ And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women. ⁵ As also the prince of the priests bears me witness, and all the estate of the elders, from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring those who were bound there unto Jerusalem to be punished.

²⁰ and when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by and consenting unto his death and kept the raiment of those that slew him.

¹⁰ Which things I also did in Jerusalem, and I shut up many of the saints in prison, having received authority from the princes of the priests, and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. ¹¹ And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto foreign cities.

²⁴ but unto those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

³⁰ But of him ye are reborn in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption,

²⁴ Of the Jews five times I received forty stripes less one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned; three times I suffered shipwreck, night and day I have been in the deep;

¹¹ And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers,

³ in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

⁵ For surely your blood which is your souls I will require; at the hand of every animal I will require it and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother I will require the soul (or life) of man. ⁶ Whoever sheds man’s blood in man, his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God is man made.

⁵ Thou shalt not bow down to them nor serve them; for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons unto the third and fourth generation of those that hate me

³³ So ye shall not pollute the land where ye are, for this blood shall defile the land; and the land cannot be reconciled of the blood that is shed therein except by the blood of the one that shed it.

⁴ and also for the innocent blood that he shed, for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, which the LORD would not pardon.

¹² When he makes requirement for blood, he remembers them; he does not forget the cry of the humble.

²¹ For, behold, the LORD comes out of his place to visit the iniquity of the inhabitant of the earth against himself: the earth also shall disclose her blood and shall no longer cover her slain.

²⁹ ¶ Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away and take up a lamentation on high places; for the LORD has cast off and forsaken the nation of his wrath.

⁵⁶ because the destroyer is come against her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, their bow is broken: for the LORD God of recompenses shall surely requite.

²⁰ Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints, apostles, and prophets; for God has judged your cause upon her. ²¹ And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with impetus shall that great city Babylon be thrown down and shall be found no more at all. ²² And the voice of harpers and musicians and of pipers and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatever craft he is, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; ²³ and the light of a lamp shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the princes of the earth in whose witchcraft all the Gentiles have erred. ²⁴ And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints and of all that were slain upon the earth.

⁸ ¶ And Cain talked with Abel his brother, and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him. ⁹ ¶ And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not, Am I my brother’s keeper? ¹⁰ And he said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s blood cries unto me from the ground. ¹¹ And now thou art cursed from the earth, which has opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

²⁸ Therefore thou shalt say unto them, This is the nation that did not hear the voice of the LORD their God, nor receive chastisement; the faith is lost and was cut off from their mouth.

¹ ¶ In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, saying,

³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye murdered between the temple and the altar.

⁴ ¶ By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts, and by it he being dead yet speaks.

²⁴ and to Jesus, the mediator of the new testament and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better than that of Abel.

¹² Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

⁷ For the priest’s lips keep wisdom, and they seek the law at his mouth; for he is an angel of the LORD of the hosts.

⁴⁵ Then one of the lawyers answered and said unto him, Master, saying these things, thou dost reproach us also. ⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye burden men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

³⁹ And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. ⁴⁰ And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that if these should be silent, the stones would immediately cry out.

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees answered them, Are ye also deceived? ⁴⁸ Have any of the princes or of the Pharisees believed on him? ⁴⁹ But this people who do not know the law are cursed. ⁵⁰ Nicodemus said unto them (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them), ⁵¹ Does our law judge any man before it hears him and knows what he does? ⁵² They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and see, for a prophet has never arisen out of Galilee.

²⁴ Then they called again the man that had been blind and said unto him, Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner. ²⁵ He answered and said, Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know; one thing I know, that having been blind, now I see. ²⁶ Then said they to him again, What did he do to thee? How did he open thine eyes? ²⁷ He answered them, I have told you already, and ye have heard; what more would ye hear? Do ye also desire to be his disciples? ²⁸ Then they reviled him and said, Be thou his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. ²⁹ We know that God spoke unto Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where he is from. ³⁰ The man answered and said unto them, Indeed this is a marvellous thing that ye do not know where he is from, and yet he has opened my eyes. ³¹ Now we know that God does not hear sinners, but if anyone should fear God and do his will, him he will hear. ³² Since the world began it has not been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of one that was born blind. ³³ If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. ³⁴ They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

¹⁷ But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them that from now on they speak to no man in this name. ¹⁸ And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

⁴⁰ And they agreed with him; and when they had called the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus and let them go.

¹² Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round about. ¹³ They opened their mouth upon me as a ravening and a roaring lion.

¹² the Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

¹⁸ ¶ Then they said, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not consider any of his words.

¹⁰ For I heard the murmuring of many, fear on every side, Report, and we will report it. All my friends watched to see if I would stumble. Peradventure he will deceive himself, they said, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.

²⁰ ¶ And they watched him and sent forth spies who feigned themselves just men that they might take hold of him as he was speaking, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

²⁷ ¶ Then certain of the Sadducees came, who deny that there is any resurrection, and they asked him,

⁵ is not injurious, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil,

³² Tzaddi The wicked watches the righteous and seeks to slay him. ³³ The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

⁵ Every day my life is filled with sorrow; all their thoughts are against me for evil. ⁶ They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps when they wait for my soul.

¹⁵ ¶ Then the Pharisees left and took counsel how they might entangle him in his word.

¹⁸ But Jesus perceived their wickedness and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

² And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day, that they might accuse him.

¹³ ¶ And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians to catch him in his words.
