¹ ¶ Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, ² Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came upon John the son of Zachariah in the wilderness. ³ And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; ⁴ as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight. ⁵ Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked ways shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; ⁶ and all flesh shall see the saving health of God. ⁷ Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ⁹ And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees; every tree therefore which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. ¹² Then the publicans also came to be baptized and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? ¹³ And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. ¹⁴ And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? ¹⁰ The sceptre shall not be taken from Judah, nor the lawgiver from between his feet until Shiloh comes; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

¹ ¶ At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus

³ For Herod had laid hold on John and bound him and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.

² and when they had bound him, they led him away and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife, for he had married her.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass in those days that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

¹⁹ Then Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife and for all the evils which Herod had done,

⁷ Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him, and he was perplexed because it was said of some that John was risen from the dead,

¹ ¶ And the whole multitude of them arose and led him unto Pilate. ² And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. ³ Then Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. ⁴ Then said Pilate to the princes of the priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

⁶ When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean. ⁷ And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time. ⁸ And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad, for he was desirous to see him of a long season because he had heard many things of him, and he hoped to see some sign done by him. ⁹ Then he questioned with him in many words, but he answered him nothing. ¹⁰ And the princes of the priests and the scribes stood and vehemently accused him. ¹¹ And Herod with his court despised him and mocked him and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe and sent him again to Pilate.

²⁴ And Pilate gave sentence that it should be according to their request.

²⁷ For of a truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together (in this city),

²⁶ Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sends greeting.

²⁷ But after two years Felix received Porcius Festus as successor; and Felix, wanting to win the grace of the Jews, left Paul bound.

³⁰ And when he had said these things, the king rose up and the governor and Bernice and those that sat with them;

³ ¶ The voice of him that cries in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

² To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

¹ ¶ Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

³ the word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and there the hand of the LORD came upon him.

¹ ¶ The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel. ² ¶ The beginning of the word of the LORD with Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land shall give itself over to whoredom by departing from the LORD.

¹ ¶ Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying,

¹ ¶ The word of the LORD that came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

¹ ¶ The word of the LORD which went unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

¹ ¶ In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea ² and saying, Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ³ For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, who said, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight. ⁴ And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and all the region round about Jordan went out to him ⁶ and were baptized of him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. ⁷ ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance ⁹ and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father, for I say unto you that God is able to raise up children unto Abraham of these stones. ¹⁰ And now the axe is also laid unto the root of the trees; therefore, every tree which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

⁷ ¶ And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

³ Then the princes of the priests and the scribes and the elders of the people assembled together in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,

³ The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight. ⁴ John baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance for remission of sins. ⁵ And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea and those of Jerusalem and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁵⁹ And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him Zacharias after the name of his father. ⁶⁰ And his mother answered and said, Not so, but he shall be called John. ⁶¹ And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. ⁶² And they communicated with signs to his father, asking how he would have him called. ⁶³ And he asked for a writing table and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they all marvelled.

⁸⁰ And the child grew and was comforted of the Spirit and was in the deserts until the day of his showing unto Israel.

²³ He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah.

⁴⁹ And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all ⁵⁰ nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation be lost. ⁵¹ And this he spoke not of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;

¹³ ¶ and led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest of that year and he sent him bound unto Caiaphas, the high priest. ¹⁴ Now Caiaphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

²⁴ Thus Annas sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

⁶ and Annas, the high priest, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest were gathered together at Jerusalem.

⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and all the region round about Jordan went out to him ⁶ and were baptized of him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire,

⁷⁷ giving knowledge of saving health unto his people for the remission of their sins

²⁸ These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

³¹ And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. ³² And John gave testimony, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. ³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

²⁶ And they came unto John and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan of whom thou gave witness, behold, the same baptizes, and all men come to him.

²⁴ John, having first proclaimed before his coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

⁴ Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ, Jesus.

¹⁶ And now why tarriest thou? Arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

³ ¶ The voice of him that cries in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. ⁴ Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places made plain: ⁵ And the glory of the LORD shall be manifested, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.

¹⁴ And shall say, Clear away, clear away, level the way, take away the stumblingblocks out of the way of my people.

¹⁰ ¶ Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; clear up, clear up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a banner as an example for the people.

⁶ and he shall convert the heart of the fathers to the sons, and the heart of the sons to the fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with destruction.

³ For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, who said, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.

¹⁶ And he shall turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the rebellious to the prudence of the just, to make ready a prepared people for the Lord.

⁷⁶ And thou, child, shalt be called prophet of the Most High, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways, ⁷⁷ giving knowledge of saving health unto his people for the remission of their sins ⁷⁸ through the bowels of mercy of our God, whereby the dayspring from on high has visited us ⁷⁹ to give light to those that dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct our feet into the way of peace.

⁷ The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there stands one among you, whom ye know not; ²⁷ he it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. ²⁸ These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²⁹ ¶ The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me. ³¹ And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. ³² And John gave testimony, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. ³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I have seen and have given testimony that this is the Son of God. ³⁵ And again the next day John stood, and two of his disciples, ³⁶ and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God!

²⁸ Ye yourselves are my witnesses that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. ²⁹ He that has the bride is the bridegroom, but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice; this my joy therefore is fulfilled. ³⁰ It is expedient unto him to increase, but unto me, to decrease. ³¹ He that comes from above is above all; he that is of the earth is earthly and speaks earthly things: he that comes from heaven is above all. ³² And what he has seen and heard, that he testifies; and no one receives his testimony. ³³ He that has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God does not give the Spirit by measure unto him. ³⁵ The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He that believes in the Son has eternal life, and he that does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. ¹² For the day of the LORD of the hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low: ¹³ And upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up and upon all the oaks of Bashan, ¹⁴ and upon all the high mountains and upon all the hills that are lifted up, ¹⁵ and upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall, ¹⁶ and upon all the ships of Tarshish and upon all pleasant pictures. ¹⁷ And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low; and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

⁶ Then the lame one shall leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall praise; for waters shall be dug in the wilderness, and streams in the desert. ⁷ The parched ground shall become a pool and the thirsty land springs of water; in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes. ⁸ And a highway shall be there and a way, and it shall be called The Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; and for those in it there shall be someone to go with them, in such a manner that the foolish shall not err therein.

⁴ Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places made plain:

¹⁶ And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will cause them to walk in paths that they have not known; I will make darkness light before them and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them and not forsake them.

² I will go before thee and make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut in sunder the bars of iron:

¹¹ And I will turn all my mountains into a way, and my highways shall be exalted.

¹ ¶ The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to preach good tidings unto those who are cast down; to bind up the wounds of the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those that are bound; ² to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; ³ to order in Zion those that mourn, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

²⁴ And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I the LORD have spoken and have done it.

⁵¹ He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. ⁵² He has put down the mighty from their thrones and exalted the humble. ⁵³ He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.

¹² Therefore, lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, ¹³ and make straight steps unto your feet, so that which is lame will not turn out of the way, but let it rather be healed.

⁹ Let the brother of low degree rejoice in his high status;

² The LORD has made known his saving health; he has openly showed his righteousness in the sight of the Gentiles. ³ He has remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the saving health of our God.

⁵ And the glory of the LORD shall be manifested, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.

⁶ And he said, It is a light thing that thou should be my slave to wake up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the desolations of Israel; I have also given thee for a light to the Gentiles that thou may be my saving health unto the end of the earth.

¹⁰ The LORD has made bare the arm of his holiness before the eyes of all the Gentiles; and all the ends of the earth shall see the saving health of our God.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

¹⁰ But the angel said unto them, Fear not; for, behold, I bring you a gospel of great joy, which shall be to all the people. ¹¹ For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

³⁰ for mine eyes have seen thy saving health, ³¹ which thou hast prepared before the face of all the peoples: ³² a light to be revealed unto the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel.

¹² ¶ For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

¹⁸ But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their fame went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

¹⁵ and I will put enmity between thee and the woman and between thy seed and her seed; that seed shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

⁴ Their poison is like the poison of a serpent; they are like the deaf adder that stops her ear, ⁵ which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.

⁵ They hatch cockatrice’ eggs and weave the spider’s web; whosoever shall eat of their eggs shall die, and if they should squeeze them, a viper shall come out.

³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

³³ Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the judgment of hell?

⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father ye desire to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.

¹⁰ and said, O full of all deception and all licentiousness, thou son of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

¹⁰ and to wait for his Son from the heavens, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, who delivered us from the wrath to come.

¹⁸ that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us,

⁸ He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared, that he might undo the works of the devil.

³ and command them, saying, Take from here of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night. ⁴ Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the sons of Israel, out of each tribe a man; ⁵ and Joshua said unto them, Pass before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan and take ye up each one of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel, ⁶ that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What do these stones mean unto you? ⁷ Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off; and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the sons of Israel for ever. ⁸ And the sons of Israel did so as Joshua commanded and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as the LORD spoke unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged and laid them down there.

¹⁶ ¶ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ learn to do good; seek judgment; restore unto the oppressed; hear the fatherless in right judgment; protect the widow. ¹⁸ Then come, shall the LORD say, and we shall be even; if your sins were as scarlet, they shall be made as white as snow; if they were red like crimson, they shall become as wool.

¹ ¶ Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, who call yourselves by the name of Israel, those that are come forth out of the waters of Judah, those who swear by the name of the LORD and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. ² For they call themselves of the holy city and stay themselves upon the God of Israel. The LORD of the hosts is his name.

⁴ Do not trust in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD are these. ⁵ For if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if ye thoroughly do right between a man and his neighbour, ⁶ if ye do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed no innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt, ⁷ then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers for ever and ever. ⁸ Behold, ye trust in lying words that cannot profit. ⁹ Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not, ¹⁰ and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are free to do all these abominations?

²⁷ Again, when the wicked man leaves his wickedness that he has committed and lives according to judgment and righteousness, he shall cause his soul to live. ²⁸ Because he saw and left all his rebellions that he has committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. ²⁹ If even now the house of Israel should say, The way of the Lord is not straight. O house of Israel, are not my ways straight? Certainly your ways are not straight. ³⁰ ¶ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each one according to his ways, said the Lord GOD. Repent and turn yourselves from all your iniquities, so iniquity shall not be your ruin. ³¹ Cast away from you all your iniquities by which ye have rebelled, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

¹¹ But I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west and shall sit down at the table with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens. ¹² But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁴³ Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a people bringing forth the fruits thereof.

²⁸ In that place shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth when ye shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. ²⁹ And others shall come from the east and from the west and from the north and from the south and shall sit at the table in the kingdom of God.

²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime didst receive thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here, and thou art tormented. ²⁶ And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass from there to us. ²⁷ Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou would send him to my father’s house, ²⁸ for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. ²⁹ Abraham said unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. ³⁰ And he said, No, father Abraham; but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. ³¹ And he said unto him, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, even though one rose from the dead.

⁴⁰ And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that if these should be silent, the stones would immediately cry out.

³³ They answered him, We are Abraham’s seed, and we have never served anyone; how sayest thou, Ye shall be set free?

³⁹ They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said unto them, If ye were Abraham’s sons, ye would do the works of Abraham.

²⁰ but I announced first unto those of Damascus and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judaea and then to the Gentiles that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.

¹⁶ Therefore by faith, that it might be by grace, to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to that which is of the law, but also to that which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

⁷ neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are all sons, but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, of which there is no need to repented; but the sorrow of the world works death. ¹¹ For behold this same thing, that when ye were made sorry by God, what carefulness it wrought in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things ye have shown yourselves to be clean in this matter.

²⁸ Here there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. ²⁹ And if ye are Christ’s, then ye are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.

²² But the fruit of the Spirit is this: Charity, joy, peace, tolerance, gentleness, goodness, faith, ²³ meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. ²⁴ For those that are of the Christ have crucified the flesh with its affections and lusts.

¹¹ being filled with fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

⁷ For the earth which drinks in the rain that comes often upon it and brings forth herbs in season for those by whom it is dressed receives blessing from God; ⁸ but that which bears thorns and briers is rejected and is near unto cursing, whose end shall be by fire.

³³ Behold, the Lord, the LORD of the hosts, shall lop the bough with force, and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled. ³⁴ And he shall cut down the thickness of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by force.

² Son of man, What is the vine tree more than any tree? What is the branch among the trees of the forest? ³ Shall wood be taken from it to do a work? Will men take a peg from it to hang any vessel thereon? ⁴ Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devours both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work?

¹⁸ To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? Yet thou shalt be cut down with the trees of Eden unto the lower parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with those that are slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his people, said the Lord GOD.

¹⁴ he cried aloud and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit; let the beasts get away from under him and the fowls from his branches:

²³ And regarding that which the king saw, one who was a watchman and holy who came down from heaven and said, Hew the tree down and destroy it; yet leave the stump of its roots in the earth, and with a band of iron and of brass let it remain bound in the green grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field until seven times pass over him:

¹⁰ And now the axe is also laid unto the root of the trees; therefore, every tree which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

¹⁹ Every tree that does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

⁷ Then he said unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none; cut it down; why does it cumber the ground?

⁹ and if it bears fruit, well; and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

²⁹ For, behold, the days are coming, in which they shall say, Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bare and the breasts which never gave suck. ³⁰ Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. ³¹ For if they do these things in the green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

⁶ He who does not abide in me shall be cast forth as an unsound branch and shall wither, and they are gathered and cast into the fire and are burned.

²⁸ He that despised the law of Moses died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

²⁹ for our God is a consuming fire.

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

¹² Then the publicans also came to be baptized and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

¹⁴ And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Oppress no one, neither accuse anyone falsely; and be content with your wages.

³⁷ ¶ Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

⁶ And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what it behooves thee to do.

³⁰ and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother? ⁸ ¶ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall gather thee. ⁹ Then shalt thou call, and thou shalt hear the LORD; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; ¹⁰ and if thou pour out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: ¹¹ And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

²⁷ Therefore, O king, approve my counsel and redeem thy sins with righteousness and thine iniquities with mercies unto the poor: behold the medicine for thy sin.

⁴⁰ And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, ye have done it unto me.

⁵ For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarius and given to the poor. And they murmured against her. ⁶ But Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? She has wrought a good work on me. ⁷ For ye have the poor with you always, and whenever ye will, ye may do them good; but me ye have not always. ⁸ She has done what she could, for she has anticipated anointing my body for the burial.

⁴¹ But rather give alms {lit. do acts of mercy} of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

²² Now when Jesus heard this, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.

⁸ Then Zacchaeus stood and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

²⁹ For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we need for the feast, or that he should give something to the poor.

² a devout man and one that feared God with all his house, who gave many alms to the people and prayed to God always.

⁴ And when he looked on him, he was afraid and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms {lit. thine acts of mercy} are come up for a memorial before God.

³¹ and said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

³ For to their power, I bear record, and even beyond their power they were willing of themselves, ⁴ praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the grace and take upon us the fellowship of the ministry to the saints. ⁵ And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord and then unto us by the will of God. ⁶ Insomuch that we exhorted Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also complete among you the same grace also. ⁷ ¶ Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith and in word and in knowledge and in all diligence and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. ⁸ I speak not as commanding, but by occasion of the diligence of others and to prove the sincerity of your charity. ⁹ For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor that ye through his poverty might be enriched. ¹⁰ And in this I give my advice, for this is expedient for you, who began not only to do, but also to be diligent a year ago. ¹¹ Now therefore finish the doing of it that as there was a readiness to will, so there may also be a performance out of that which ye have. ¹² For if there is first a willing desire, it is accepted according to what a person has and not according to what they do not have. ¹³ For I mean not that others be eased and ye burdened, ¹⁴ but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want that their abundance also may be a supply for your want, that there may be equality:

¹⁸ but charge them to do good, that they be rich in good works, liberal to distribute, willing to communicate,

¹⁰ For God is not unjust to forget your work and labour of charity which ye have showed in his name, having helped the saints and helping them.

²⁷ The pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation and to keep thyself unspotted from this world.

¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you says unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; but ye do not give them those things which are needful for the body; what shall it profit them? ¹⁷ Even so faith, if it does not have works, is dead in and of itself. ¹⁸ But someone may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works. ¹⁹ Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well; the demons also believe and tremble. ²⁰ But, O vain man, dost thou desire to know that faith without works is dead? ²¹ Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? ²² Dost thou not see how the faith worked together with his works, and the faith was complete by the works? ²³ And that the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness, and he was called the Friend of God. ²⁴ Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith. ²⁵ Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? ²⁶ For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

¹⁷ But whosoever has this world’s goods and sees his brother have need and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how does the charity of God abide in him?

²⁰ If anyone says, I love God and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he that does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go ahead of you into the kingdom of God. ³² For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not, but the publicans and the harlots believed him, and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward that ye might believe him.

²⁹ And all the people that heard him and the publicans justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

¹ ¶ Then all the publicans and sinners drew near unto him to hear him. ² And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receives sinners and eats with them.

¹³ And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God, reconcile me, a sinner.

²³ I was perfect before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.

¹³ ¶ He that covers his sins shall not prosper, but whosoever confesses and forsakes them shall attain mercy.

¹⁶ ¶ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ learn to do good; seek judgment; restore unto the oppressed; hear the fatherless in right judgment; protect the widow.

⁶ ¶ Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near: ⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

²¹ ¶ But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he has committed and keep all my statutes and live according to judgment and righteousness, he shall surely live, he shall not die. ²² All his rebellions that he has committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him; by his righteousness that he has done he shall live.

²⁷ Again, when the wicked man leaves his wickedness that he has committed and lives according to judgment and righteousness, he shall cause his soul to live. ²⁸ Because he saw and left all his rebellions that he has committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

⁸ He has declared unto thee, O man, what is good and what the LORD requires of thee: only to do right judgment, and to love mercy, and to humble thyself to walk with thy God.

¹² ¶ Therefore, all things whatsoever ye desire that men should do unto you, so also shall ye do unto them, for this is the law and the prophets.

¹⁰ nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God.

²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more, but rather let him labour, working with his hands that which is good, that he may have to give to him that is in need.

¹¹ ¶ For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, ¹² teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live temperately, righteously, and godly in this present world;

¹ ¶ Therefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, leaving behind all the weight of the sin which surrounds us, let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

¹⁶ Thou shalt not give false testimony against thy neighbour.

¹ ¶ Thou shalt not admit a false rumour; put not thine hand with the wicked to be a false witness.

¹¹ ¶ Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.

⁵ ¶ And when Jesus was entering into Capernaum, a centurion came unto him, beseeching him,

⁷ And when the angel who spoke unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier of those that waited on him continually;

⁹ For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not murder, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet, and if there is any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ¹⁰ Charity works no evil to a neighbour; therefore, charity is the fulfillment of the law.

¹⁵ that ye may be blameless and innocent, children of God without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world,

¹¹ Not that I speak in respect of want, for I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content.

⁸ So that, sustenance and covering, let us be content with this. ⁹ For those that desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

³ The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becomes holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of honesty;

⁵ Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as ye have; for he has said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. ⁶ So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

¹⁰ And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation and virtue and the kingdom of our God and the power of his Christ; for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accused them before our God day and night.

¹⁹ ¶ And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? ²⁰ And he confessed and denied not, but confessed, I am not the Christ. ²¹ And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. ²² Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? ²³ He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah. ²⁴ And those who were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ And they asked him and said unto him, Why dost thou baptize then if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet? ²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there stands one among you, whom ye know not; ²⁷ he it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. ²⁸ These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁸ Ye yourselves are my witnesses that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. ²⁹ He that has the bride is the bridegroom, but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice; this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

²⁴ Then the Jews came round about him and said unto him, Until when wilt thou hold our soul in suspense? If thou art the Christ, tell us plainly.

²³ Return at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

⁴ When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning.

¹⁵ until the spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness is turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is counted for a forest.

³ For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon thy seed and my blessing upon thine offspring: ⁴ And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

²⁵ ¶ And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be cleansed from all your filthiness, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.

²⁸ ¶ And it shall come to pass after this that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: ²⁹ and even upon the slaves and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

⁹ And I will put the third part into the fire and will refine them as silver is refined and will try them as gold is tried; He shall call on my name, and I will hear him; I will say, My people, and he shall say, The LORD is my God.

² But who may abide the time of his coming? and who shall stand when he appears? for he shall be like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap: ³ And he shall sit to refine and to purify the silver: for he shall purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

⁷ and preached, saying, There comes one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. ⁸ I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there stands one among you, whom ye know not;

³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

³⁸ He that believes in me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

⁵ For John truly baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

³ And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. ⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

¹⁷ And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; ¹⁸ and for certain on my slaves and on my handmaids I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy;

³³ Therefore being raised up by the right hand of God and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which ye now see and hear.

⁴⁴ ¶ While Peter yet spoke these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word.

¹⁵ And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the beginning. ¹⁶ Then I remembered the word of the Lord, when he said, John indeed baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.

²⁴ John, having first proclaimed before his coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. ²⁵ And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there comes one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

⁴ Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ, Jesus. ⁵ When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

¹³ For by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body, whether we are Jews or Greeks, whether we are slaves or free, and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

⁴ ¶ The ungodly are not so but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

⁹ Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger; the LORD shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them. ¹⁰ Their fruit shalt thou destroy from the earth and their seed from among the children of men.

²⁴ Thine oxen and thine asses that work the ground shall eat clean grain, which has been winnowed with the shovel and with the fan.

⁷ And I fanned them with a fan unto the gates of the land; I bereaved them of children, I wasted my people; they did not turn from their ways.

¹² But they did not know the thoughts of the LORD, neither did they understand his counsel by which he gathered them as sheaves onto the threshing floor.

¹² whose fan is in his hand; and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the storehouse, but he will burn up the chaff with fire that shall never be quenched.

³⁰ Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.

⁴³ And if thy hand causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁴ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁵ And if thy foot causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁶ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁷ And if thine eye causes thee to fall, pluck it out; it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be cast into hell, ⁴⁸ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁹ For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

¹⁵ ¶ John bore witness of him and cried, saying, This is he of whom I spoke, He that comes after me is preferred before me, for he was before me.

²⁹ ¶ The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

³⁴ And I have seen and have given testimony that this is the Son of God.

⁴⁰ And with many other words he testified and exhorted, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation.

⁷ He that chastens a scorner brings shame unto himself, and he that chastens a wicked man brings himself a blot. ⁸ Chasten not a scorner lest he hate thee; chasten a wise man, and he will love thee.

¹² ¶ The scorner does not love the one that reproves him, neither will he go unto the wise.

² Now when John had heard in the prison the works of the Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

³ For Herod had laid hold on John and bound him and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife. ⁴ For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife, for he had married her. ¹⁸ For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

¹ ¶ Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

¹⁶ Moreover, Manasseh shed innocent blood very much until he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another besides his sin with which he made Judah sin so that they would do that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

⁴ and also for the innocent blood that he shed, for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, which the LORD would not pardon.

¹⁷ Now after the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and worshipped the king. Then the king hearkened unto them. ¹⁸ And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers and served groves and idols, and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for their guilt. ¹⁹ Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again unto the LORD, and they testified against them, but they would not give ear. ²⁰ And the Spirit of God clothed himself in Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada, the priest, who being over the people, said unto them, Thus hath God said, Why do ye transgress the commandments of the LORD? Ye shall not prosper in this; for because ye have forsaken the LORD, he shall also forsake you. ²¹ And they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD. ²² Thus Joash, the king, did not remember the mercy which Jehoiada, his father, had done to him but slew his son; who said when he died, The LORD look upon it and require it.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and misused his prophets until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, and there was no remedy.

²⁶ Nevertheless, they were contentious and rebelled against thee and cast thy law behind their backs and slew thy prophets who testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great abominations.

³⁰ I have smitten your children in vain; they have received no correction; your own sword has devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

³⁵ And the husbandmen took his slaves and beat one and killed another and stoned another. ³⁶ Again, he sent other slaves more than the first, and they did unto them likewise. ³⁷ But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ³⁸ But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us take his inheritance. ³⁹ And they took hold of him and cast him out of the vineyard and slew him. ⁴⁰ Therefore, when the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do unto those husbandmen? ⁴¹ They say unto him, He will destroy those wicked men without mercy and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen who shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

⁶ and the others took his slaves and entreated them spitefully and slew them. ⁷ But when the king heard of this, he became angry and sent forth his armies and destroyed those murderers and burned up their city.

³¹ Therefore ye are witnesses unto yourselves that ye are the sons of those who murdered the prophets. ³² Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. ³³ Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the judgment of hell?

³¹ ¶ The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Go out and depart from here, for Herod will kill thee. ³² And he said unto them, Go ye and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out demons, and I do cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. ³³ Nevertheless I must walk today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. ³⁴ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which kills the prophets and stones those that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

²⁴ For John was not yet cast into prison.

¹⁵ who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and have persecuted us, and they do not please God and are contrary to all men, ¹⁶ forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up the measure of their sins always, for the wrath of God has come upon them to the uttermost.

⁶ for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they deserve it.

¹³ ¶ Then Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him. ¹⁴ But John resisted him much, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? ¹⁵ And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now, for thus it is expedient for us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. ¹⁶ And Jesus, after he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and, behold, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him; ¹⁷ and, behold, a voice from the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

²³ And when he had sent the multitude away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray; and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

⁹ ¶ And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth a city of Galilee and was baptized of John in the Jordan. ¹⁰ And as soon as he was come out of the water, John saw the heavens opened and the Spirit like a dove descending and resting upon him; ¹¹ and there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my dear Son, in whom I delight.

¹⁶ But he withdrew himself into the wilderness and prayed.

¹⁸ ¶ And it came to pass as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him, and he asked them, saying, Who do the people say that I am?

²⁸ ¶ And it came to pass about eight days after these words, he took Peter and John and James and went up into the mountain to pray. ²⁹ And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

³² And John gave testimony, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. ³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I have seen and have given testimony that this is the Son of God.

²⁷ ¶ Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour, but for this have I come in this hour. ²⁸ Father, clarify thy name. Then there came a voice from the heaven, saying, I have clarified it and will clarify it again.

⁷ ¶ I will declare the decree; the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day I have begotten thee.

¹ ¶ Behold my slave, whom I uphold; my elect, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he shall give judgment unto the Gentiles.

¹⁷ and, behold, a voice from the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

¹⁸ Behold my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my Spirit upon him, and he shall declare judgment unto the Gentiles.

⁵ While he yet spoke, behold, a cloud of light overshadowed them, and, behold, a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

⁴³ He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him, for he said, I am the Son of God.

²¹ And he began to say unto them, Today this scripture is fulfilled in your ears.

³⁴ While he was speaking this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they feared as they entered into the cloud. ³⁵ And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.

³² And John gave testimony, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

³⁸ how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him.

¹³ who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son,

⁴ ¶ coming unto whom (is the living Stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious),

¹⁷ For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. ¹⁸ And we heard this voice which came from heaven, when we were together with him in the holy mount.

⁴⁶ ¶ And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

³ from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do work in the tabernacle of the testimony.

³⁵ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to minister in the tabernacle of the testimony.

³⁹ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to minister in the tabernacle of the testimony,

⁴³ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to minister in the tabernacle of the testimony,

⁴⁷ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered in to serve in the service and to bear a burden in the tabernacle of the testimony,

¹ ¶ The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.

⁶ Jesse begat David the king; David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

¹⁶ Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

¹⁷ From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens is at hand.

⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

³ Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses and of Juda and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

²³ And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was the son of Heli, ²⁴ who was the son of Matthat, who was the son of Levi, who was the son of Melchi, who was the son of Janna, who was the son of Joseph, ²⁵ who was the son of Mattathias, who was the son of Amos, who was the son of Naum, who was the son of Esli, who was the son of Nagge, ²⁶ who was the son of Maath, who was the son of Mattathias, who was the son of Semei, who was the son of Joseph, who was the son of Juda, ²⁷ who was the son of Joanna, who was the son of Rhesa, who was the son of Zorobabel, who was the son of Salathiel, who was the son of Neri,

³¹ who was the son of Melea, who was the son of Menan, who was the son of Mattatha, who was the son of Nathan, who was the son of David,

²² And all bore him witness and marvelled at the words of grace which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?

⁴² And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that he says, I descended from heaven?

¹ ¶ The former treatise I have made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

¹² after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

¹⁴ And these were the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

⁵ And these were born unto him in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon, four of Bathshua, the daughter of Ammiel:

⁴ Now these are the names of his children which were born unto him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

¹² And the land shall mourn, each family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;

⁷ of Judah, Nahshon, the son of Amminadab;

³ ¶ These shall pitch toward the sunrise, on the east: the standard of the camp of Judah throughout their hosts and the prince of the sons of Judah, Nahshon, the son of Amminadab.

¹² And he that offered his offering the first day was Nahshon, the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah.

¹⁸ Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, ¹⁹ and Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, ²⁰ and Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, ²¹ and Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, ²² and Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.

⁵⁸ And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy slave Jesse of Bethlehem.

³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the land, thou shalt not be established nor thy kingdom. Therefore, now send and bring him unto me, for he shall surely die.

¹⁶ ¶ So when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? There is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

¹⁰ And Ram begat Amminadab, and Amminadab begat Nahshon, prince of the sons of Judah; ¹¹ And Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz, ¹² And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse, ¹³ And Jesse begat his firstborn Eliab, and Abinadab the second and Shimma the third, ¹⁴ Nethaneel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, ¹⁵ Ozem the sixth, David the seventh,

²⁰ The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

¹ ¶ And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: ² And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD,

³ Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; Phares begat Esrom; Esrom begat Aram; ⁴ Aram begat Aminadab; Aminadab begat Naasson; Naasson begat Salmon; ⁵ Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; Booz begat Obed of Ruth; Obed begat Jesse; ⁶ Jesse begat David the king; David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

²² And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king, to whom also he gave testimony, saying, I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who shall fulfil all my will. ²³ Of this man’s seed has God according to his promise raised up Jesus as Saviour unto Israel:

³⁵ And she conceived again and gave birth a son; and she said, Now I will praise the LORD; therefore she called his name Judah and stopped bearing children.

²⁹ And it came to pass as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out; and she said, Why hast thou brought this breach upon thee? Therefore his name was called Pharez.

¹² And the sons of Judah: Er and Onan and Shelah and Pharez and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.

⁸ ¶ Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise; thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s sons shall bow down before thee.

²⁰ And the sons of Judah by their families: of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites; of Pharez, the family of the Pharzites; of Zerah, the family of the Zarhites. ²¹ And the sons of Pharez: of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites.

¹² let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bore unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.

¹⁹ and Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, ²⁰ and Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,

⁴ And Tamar, his daughter-in-law, gave birth unto him Pharez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five. ⁵ The sons of Pharez: Hezron and Hamul.

⁹ The sons that were born unto Hezron: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai. ¹⁰ And Ram begat Amminadab, and Amminadab begat Nahshon, prince of the sons of Judah;

⁴ Uthai, the son of Ammihud, the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, of the sons of Pharez, the son of Judah.

² Abraham begat Isaac; Isaac begat Jacob; Jacob begat Judas and his brothers; ³ Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; Phares begat Esrom; Esrom begat Aram; ⁴ Aram begat Aminadab; Aminadab begat Naasson; Naasson begat Salmon;

²⁴ And Nahor lived twenty-nine years and begat Terah; ²⁵ and Nahor lived after he begat Terah one hundred and nineteen years and begat sons and daughters. ²⁶ And Terah lived seventy years and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran. ²⁷ ¶ Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. ²⁸ And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nature, in Ur of the Chaldees. ²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves; the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. ³⁰ But Sarai was barren; she had no child. ³¹ And Terah took Abram, his son, and Lot, the son of Haran, his son’s son, and Sarai, his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran and dwelt there. ³² And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.

³ And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.

²⁶ And afterwards his brother came out with Esau’s heel grasped in his hand; and his name was called Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

² And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Long ago your fathers dwelt on the other side of the river, even Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nachor, and they served other gods.

²⁴ Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah, ²⁵ Eber, Peleg, Reu, ²⁶ Serug, Nahor, Terah, ²⁷ and Abram, who is Abraham. ²⁸ ¶ The sons of Abraham: Isaac and Ishmael.

³⁴ And Abraham begat Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel.

² Abraham begat Isaac; Isaac begat Jacob; Jacob begat Judas and his brothers;

⁸ And he gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begat Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day, and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

²⁴ And Arphaxad begat Salah, and Salah begat Eber. ²⁵ And unto Eber were born two sons; the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.

¹² And Arphaxad lived thirty-five years and begat Salah; ¹³ and Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years and begat sons and daughters. ¹⁴ And Salah lived thirty years and begat Eber; ¹⁵ and Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years and begat sons and daughters. ¹⁶ And Eber lived thirty-four years and begat Peleg; ¹⁷ and Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years and begat sons and daughters. ¹⁸ And Peleg lived thirty years and begat Reu; ¹⁹ and Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years and begat sons and daughters. ²⁰ And Reu lived thirty-two years and begat Serug; ²¹ and Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years and begat sons and daughters.

²⁸ ¶ And Lamech lived one hundred eighty-two years and begat a son; ²⁹ and he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands because of the ground which the LORD has cursed. ³⁰ And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety-five years and begat sons and daughters; ³¹ and all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy-seven years, and he died. ³² And Noah was five hundred years old; and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

⁸ ¶ But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. ⁹ These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. ¹⁰ And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

²² ¶ Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

¹³ ¶ In that same day Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered into the ark,

²³ And every substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man and cattle and the animals and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth, and only Noah remained alive and those that were with him in the ark.

¹ ¶ And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark; and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters ceased;

¹ ¶ And God blessed Noah and his sons and said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

¹⁸ ¶ And the sons of Noah, that went forth from the ark, were Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the father of Canaan.

²⁶ And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his slave. ²⁷ God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his slave.

²¹ ¶ Unto Shem also, the father of all the sons of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, even to him were sons born. ²² The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram.

¹⁰ ¶ These are the generations of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood: ¹¹ And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years and begat sons and daughters. ¹² And Arphaxad lived thirty-five years and begat Salah; ¹³ and Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years and begat sons and daughters. ¹⁴ And Salah lived thirty years and begat Eber; ¹⁵ and Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years and begat sons and daughters. ¹⁶ And Eber lived thirty-four years and begat Peleg; ¹⁷ and Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years and begat sons and daughters. ¹⁸ And Peleg lived thirty years and begat Reu; ¹⁹ and Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years and begat sons and daughters. ²⁰ And Reu lived thirty-two years and begat Serug; ²¹ and Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years and begat sons and daughters. ²² And Serug lived thirty years and begat Nahor; ²³ and Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years and begat sons and daughters. ²⁴ And Nahor lived twenty-nine years and begat Terah; ²⁵ and Nahor lived after he begat Terah one hundred and nineteen years and begat sons and daughters. ²⁶ And Terah lived seventy years and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

¹⁷ The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, Aram, Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech.

¹⁴ though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in the midst of her, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, said the Lord GOD.

²⁷ They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

⁷ By faith Noah, having received revelation of things not seen as yet, with great care prepared an ark to the saving of his house, by which he condemned the world and was made heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

²⁰ which in the time past were disobedient, when once the patience of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being made ready, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

⁵ and if he did not forgive the old world, but kept Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven other persons, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

⁶ ¶ And Seth lived one hundred and five years and begat Enos. ⁷ And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years and begat sons and daughters; ⁸ and all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died. ⁹ And Enos lived ninety years and begat Cainan, ¹⁰ and Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years and begat sons and daughters; ¹¹ and all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years, and he died. ¹² And Cainan lived seventy years and begat Mahalaleel; ¹³ and Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years and begat sons and daughters; ¹⁴ and all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died. ¹⁵ And Mahalaleel lived sixty-five years and begat Jared; ¹⁶ and Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years and begat sons and daughters; ¹⁷ and all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety-five years and he died. ¹⁸ And Jared lived one hundred sixty-two years and he begat Enoch; ¹⁹ and Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years and begat sons and daughters; ²⁰ and all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty-two years, and he died. ²¹ ¶ And Enoch lived sixty-five years and begat Methuselah; ²² And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years and begat sons and daughters; ²³ and all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty-five years. ²⁴ And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. ²⁵ ¶ And Methuselah lived one hundred eighty-seven years, and begat Lamech; ²⁶ and Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty-two years and begat sons and daughters; ²⁷ and all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty-nine years, and he died. ²⁸ ¶ And Lamech lived one hundred eighty-two years and begat a son;

¹ ¶ Adam, Seth, Enosh, ² Kenan, Mahalaleel, Jered, ³ Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech,

²⁶ ¶ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over the beasts and over all the earth and over every serpent that moves upon the earth. ²⁷ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

⁷ And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.

²⁵ ¶ And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth; for God, said she, has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

⁸ But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; such that we all are the work of thy hands.

²⁶ and has made of one blood all the lineage of men to dwell on all the face of the earth and has determined the seasons (which he has limited) and the bounds of their habitation; ²⁷ that they should seek the Lord, if in any manner they might reach out to touch him and find him though he is not far from each one of us; ²⁸ for in him we live and move and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also of his lineage. ²⁹ Being therefore of the lineage of God, we ought not to think that which is Divine is like unto gold or silver or stone, bearing the mark of art and man’s imagination.

⁴⁵ And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a life-giving Spirit.

⁴⁷ The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord of heaven.
