³² For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not, but the publicans and the harlots believed him, and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward that ye might believe him.

¹¹ But my people did not hearken to my voice, and Israel did not love me. ¹² So I gave them up unto the hardness of their heart, and they walked in their own counsels.

⁸ And a highway shall be there and a way, and it shall be called The Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; and for those in it there shall be someone to go with them, in such a manner that the foolish shall not err therein.

¹⁶ Thus hath the LORD said, Stand ye in the ways and see and ask for the old paths, where the good way is and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

¹¹ But they refused to hearken and pulled away the shoulder and stopped their ears that they should not hear. ¹² Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone lest they should hear the law and the words which the LORD of the hosts has sent by his Spirit by the hand of the former prophets; therefore came great wrath from the LORD of the hosts.

¹ ¶ In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea ² and saying, Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ³ For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, who said, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight. ⁴ And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and all the region round about Jordan went out to him ⁶ and were baptized of him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. ⁷ ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance ⁹ and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father, for I say unto you that God is able to raise up children unto Abraham of these stones. ¹⁰ And now the axe is also laid unto the root of the trees; therefore, every tree which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. ¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire, ¹² whose fan is in his hand; and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the storehouse, but he will burn up the chaff with fire that shall never be quenched.

¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a devil.

²⁵ The baptism of John, where was it from? from heaven or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven, he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ⁹ And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees; every tree therefore which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. ¹² Then the publicans also came to be baptized and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? ¹³ And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

²⁹ And all the people that heard him and the publicans justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. ³⁰ But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

³⁷ And, behold, a woman who had been a sinner in the city, when she knew that Jesus sat at food in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, ³⁸ and stood at his feet behind him weeping and began to wash his feet with tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. ³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he spoke within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that touches him, for she is a sinner. ⁴⁰ And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have something to say unto thee. And he said, Master, say on. ⁴¹ There was a certain creditor who had two debtors: the one owed five hundred denarius, and the other fifty. ⁴² And when they had nothing to pay, he released them both from their debt. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? ⁴³ Simon answered and said, I suppose that he to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. ⁴⁴ And he turned to the woman and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house, thou didst give me no water for my feet; but she has washed my feet with tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head. ⁴⁵ Thou gavest me no kiss; but this woman since the time I came in has not ceased to kiss my feet. ⁴⁶ Thou didst not anoint my head with oil; but this woman has anointed my feet with ointment. ⁴⁷ Therefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much; but to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little. ⁴⁸ And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. ⁴⁹ And those that sat at food with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgives sins also? ⁵⁰ And he said to the woman, Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace.

³³ Ye sent unto John, and he bore witness unto the truth. ³⁴ But I receive not testimony from man, but I say these things that ye might be saved. ³⁵ He was a burning and a shining light, and ye were willing to rejoice for one hour in his light. ³⁶ But I have greater testimony than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me that the Father has sent me. ³⁷ And the Father himself, who has sent me, has borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his appearance. ³⁸ And ye do not have his word abiding in you; for whom he has sent, him ye do not believe. ³⁹ Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are those who testify of me. ⁴⁰ And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

²⁵ And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there comes one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. ²⁶ Men and brethren, sons of the lineage of Abraham, and whosoever among you fears God, unto you is this word of saving health sent. ²⁷ For those that dwell at Jerusalem and their princes, because they knew him not nor yet the voices of the prophets who are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. ²⁸ And without finding cause of death in him, yet they asked Pilate that he should be slain. ²⁹ And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a sepulchre.

²⁵ that with meekness they might teach those that resist, if God peradventure will grant unto them that they might repent and know the truth,

¹² Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unfaithfulness, to depart from the living God.

⁶ and have backslidden, be renewed again by repentance, crucifying again for themselves the Son of God and putting him to an open shame. ⁷ For the earth which drinks in the rain that comes often upon it and brings forth herbs in season for those by whom it is dressed receives blessing from God; ⁸ but that which bears thorns and briers is rejected and is near unto cursing, whose end shall be by fire.

²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

²¹ And I have given her time to repent of her fornication, and she repented not.
