³⁸ But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us take his inheritance.

¹⁸ And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. ¹⁹ And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer comes; ²⁰ now therefore, come and let us slay him and cast him into a cistern, and we will say, Some evil beast has devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

² The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his anointed, saying, ³ let us break their bands asunder and cast away their cords from us. ⁴ He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. ⁵ Then he shall speak unto them in his wrath and trouble them in his sore displeasure. ⁶ Yet I have set my king upon Zion, the mountain of my holiness. ⁷ ¶ I will declare the decree; the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day I have begotten thee. ⁸ Ask of me, and I shall give thee the Gentiles for thine inheritance and unto the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

¹³ ¶ And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in dreams, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt and remain there until I bring thee word, for Herod will seek the young child to kill him. ¹⁴ And awaking, he took the young child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt ¹⁵ and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. ¹⁶ ¶ Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth and sent forth and killed all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had understood of the wise men.

³ Then the princes of the priests and the scribes and the elders of the people assembled together in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, ⁴ and took counsel that they might take Jesus by guile and kill him.

¹ ¶ When the morning was come, all the princes of the priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death, ² and when they had bound him, they led him away and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

⁷ But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the place shall be ours. ⁸ And taking hold of him, they killed him and cast him out of the vineyard.

⁴⁷ Then the high priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, What shall we do? for this man does many signs. ⁴⁸ If we let him thus alone, everyone will believe on him, and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and the nation. ⁴⁹ And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all ⁵⁰ nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation be lost. ⁵¹ And this he spoke not of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation; ⁵² and not for that nation only, but that he should also gather together in one the sons of God that were scattered abroad. ⁵³ So that from that day forth they took counsel together to kill him.

²⁷ For of a truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together (in this city), ²⁸ to do that which thy hand and thy counsel had determined beforehand must be done.

²⁴ Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the princes of the priests heard these things, they were perplexed regarding what this would come to. ²⁵ Then someone came and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people. ²⁶ ¶ Then the captain with the officers went and brought them without violence, for they feared being stoned by the people. ²⁷ And when they had brought them, they set them before the council, and the prince of the priests asked them, ²⁸ saying, Did we not strictly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.
