He shall seek their friendship and not find it. ⁸ ¶ He that gets wisdom loves his own soul; he keeps intelligence that he might find that which is good. ⁹ ¶ The false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish. ¹⁰ ¶ Delight is not suitable for a fool; much less for a slave to have rule over princes. ¹¹ ¶ The discretion of a man defers his anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. ¹² ¶ The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion, but his favour is as dew upon the grass. ¹³ ¶ A foolish son is a pain unto his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping. ¹⁴ ¶ House and riches are the inheritance from fathers, but the prudent wife is from the LORD. ¹⁵ ¶ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and the negligent soul shall suffer hunger. ¹⁶ ¶ He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul, but he that despises his ways shall die. ¹⁷ ¶ He that gives unto the poor lends unto the LORD, and he will give him his reward. ¹⁸ ¶ Chasten thy son while there is hope, but do not stir up thy soul to destroy him. ¹⁹ ¶ A man of great wrath shall suffer the consequences, for even if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again. ²⁰ ¶ Hear counsel, and receive chastening that thou may be wise in thy old age. ²¹ ¶ There are many thoughts in the heart of man; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD shall stand. ²² ¶ Contentment is unto men to show mercy, but it is better to do it unto the poor than to the liar. ²³ ¶ The fear of the LORD is unto life, and he that has it shall live satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil. ²⁴ ¶ The slothful man hides his hand in his bosom and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again. ²⁵ ¶ Smite a scorner, and the simple will become prudent, and reproving one that has understanding, he will understand knowledge. ²⁶ ¶ He that steals from his father and chases away his mother is a son that causes shame and brings reproach. ²⁷ ¶ Cease, my son, to hear the teaching that induces one to deviate from the reasons of wisdom. ²⁸ ¶ A witness of Belial shall scorn judgment, and the mouth of the wicked shall cover iniquity. ²⁹ ¶ Judgments are prepared for scorners and stripes for the back of fools.

¹⁷ Now, therefore, know and consider what thou must do, for evil is determined against our master and against all his household, for he is such a son of Belial that no one can speak to him.

²⁵ Let not my lord, I pray thee, take to heart this man of Belial, even Nabal, for as his name is, so is he; Nabal {Heb. fool} is his name, and folly is with him; but I, thy handmaid, did not see the servants of my lord whom thou didst send.

¹¹ But as for me, I will walk in my integrity; ransom me and be merciful unto me.

²⁶ He is ever merciful and lends, and his seed is a blessing.

²⁶ ¶ The righteous causes his neighbour to consider: but the way of the wicked causes them to err.

² ¶ He that walks in his uprightness fears the LORD, but he that is perverse in his ways despises him.

¹⁶ ¶ Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.

⁸ ¶ Better is a little with righteousness than a great number of fruits with injustice.

⁶ ¶ Better is the poor that walks in his perfection than he that is perverse in his ways, though he is rich.

³ For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips pronounce lies; your tongue speaks evil.

³¹ Therefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven unto men. ³² And whosoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him, but whosoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this age, neither in the age to come. ³³ Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree corrupt and its fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by its fruit. ³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

²⁶ For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren, Has not God chosen the poor of this world that they might be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those that love him? ⁶ But ye have despised the poor. Do not the rich oppress you with tyranny and draw you with violence to the courts?

⁵ If I have walked with falsehood or if my foot has hastened to deceit,

¹⁶ For their feet shall run to evil and make haste to shed blood.

²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of wisdom.

²⁹ ¶ He that is slow to wrath is of great intelligence, but he that is short of spirit exalts folly.

⁵ ¶ The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness, but of every one that is too hasty, only to want.

⁸ ¶ Do not go forth hastily to strive lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof when thy neighbour has put thee to shame.

²⁰ ¶ The man of truth shall abound with blessings, but he that makes haste to be rich shall not be absolved.

²² ¶ He that hastens to be rich has an evil eye and does not consider that poverty shall come upon him.

²⁰ ¶ Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

⁹ Do not be hasty in thy spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

⁹ And the wiser the preacher became that much more did he teach wisdom to the people, causing them to listen and to search things out, and he composed many proverbs.

¹¹ When its boughs are withered, they shall be broken off: women shall come and set them on fire: for this is not a people of understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will show them no favour.

¹⁶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believes shall not make haste.

⁶ ¶ My people were cut off because they lacked wisdom; because thou hast rejected wisdom, I will cast thee out of the priesthood; seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy sons.

³ And they will do these things unto you because they do not know the Father, nor me.

² For I give testimony that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

⁹ ¶ And this I pray that your charity may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all perception,

⁶ ¶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was desirable to the eyes, and a tree of covetousness to understand, she took of its fruit and ate and gave also unto her husband with her; and he ate. ⁷ And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves girdles. ⁸ And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. ⁹ ¶ And the LORD God called unto the man and said unto him, Where art thou? ¹⁰ And he replied, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. ¹¹ ¶ And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee not to eat? ¹² And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.

⁵ but he did not look upon Cain and his present. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. ⁶ ¶ Then the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? ⁷ If thou doest good, it shall certainly be accepted; and if thou doest not good, sin lies at the door. And his desire shall be unto thee, but thou must rule over him. ⁸ ¶ And Cain talked with Abel his brother, and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him. ⁹ ¶ And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not, Am I my brother’s keeper? ¹⁰ And he said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s blood cries unto me from the ground. ¹¹ And now thou art cursed from the earth, which has opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; ¹² when thou tillest the ground, from now on it shall not yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. ¹³ ¶ And Cain said unto the LORD, My iniquity is greater than I can bear. ¹⁴ Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I hide; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass that anyone that finds me shall slay me.

¹⁹ And Korah had gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the testimony; then the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation. ²⁰ And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, ²¹ Separate yourselves from among this congregation, and I will consume them in a moment. ²² And they fell upon their faces and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation? ²³ ¶ Then the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, ²⁴ Speak unto the congregation, saying, Separate yourselves now from the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. ²⁵ And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. ²⁶ And he spoke unto the congregation, saying, Depart from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs lest peradventure ye be consumed in all their sins. ²⁷ So they removed themselves from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side; and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, with their wives and their sons and their little children. ²⁸ And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them out of my own heart. ²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men or if they are visited after the visitation of all men, then the LORD has not sent me. ³⁰ But if the LORD does a new thing and the earth opens her mouth and swallows them up with all their things and they go down alive into Sheol, then ye shall know that these men have provoked the LORD. ³¹ And it came to pass as he had made an end of speaking all these words that the ground broke open under them; ³² the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their houses and all the men of Korah and all their goods. ³³ They and all that they had went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the congregation. ³⁴ And all Israel, those that were round about them, fled at the cry of them, for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. ³⁵ ¶ And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense. ³⁶ Then the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, ³⁷ Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning and scatter thou the fire yonder, for ³⁸ the censers of these sinners are sanctified against their own souls, and broad plates shall be made of them for a covering of the altar, for they offered with them before the LORD; therefore, they are sanctified, and they shall be a sign unto the sons of Israel. ³⁹ And Eleazar, the priest, took the brass censers with which those that were burnt had offered, and they were made into a broad covering of the altar ⁴⁰ to be a memorial unto the sons of Israel, that no stranger who is not of the seed of Aaron come near to offer incense before the LORD, that he not be as Korah and as his company, as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses. ⁴¹ ¶ But on the next day all the congregation of the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the LORD.

¹² Then the sons of Israel spoke unto Moses, saying, Behold, we are dead, we are lost, we are all lost. ¹³ Anyone who comes near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die; shall we all perish?

¹³ Then Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly; thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee, for now the LORD would have established thy kingdom over Israel for ever.

²³ For rebellion is the sin of witchcraft, and to break the word of the Lord is iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected thee from being king.

¹³ And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread and a sword and hast enquired of God for him that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? ¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king and said, And who is so faithful among all thy slaves as David, the king’s son-in-law, who goes at thy bidding and is honourable in thy house? ¹⁵ Did I begin to enquire of God for him today? Be it far from me; let not the king impute any thing unto his slave nor to all the house of my father, for thy slave knew nothing of all this, less or more. ¹⁶ And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou and all thy father’s house. ¹⁷ Then the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn and slay the priests of the LORD because their hand also is with David and because they knew when he fled and did not show it to me. But the slaves of the king would not put forth their hands to fall upon the priests of the LORD. ¹⁸ Then the king said to Doeg, Turn thou and fall upon the priests. And Doeg, the Edomite, turned and he fell upon the priests and slew on that day eighty-five men that wore a linen ephod. ¹⁹ And Nob, the city of the priests, he smote with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings and oxen and asses and sheep with the edge of the sword. ²⁰ ¶ And one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. ²¹ And Abiathar gave David the news that Saul had slain the LORD’s priests. ²² And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day when Doeg, the Edomite, was there that he would surely tell Saul. I have given cause before Saul against all the persons of thy father’s house. ²³ Abide thou with me; do not fear, for he that seeks my life seeks thy life; it is good that thou shalt be kept with me.

⁴² And he said unto him, Thus hath the LORD said, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand the man of my anathema, therefore, thy life shall go for his life and thy people for his people. ⁴³ And the king of Israel went to his house, sad and angry, and came to Samaria.

⁹ So the king of Israel went and the king of Judah and the king of Edom, and as they walked round about seven days’ journey through the desert, there was no water for the host or for the beasts that followed them. ¹⁰ Then the king of Israel said, Alas! The LORD has called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!

³³ And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him; and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; for what should I wait for the LORD any longer?

⁹ For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly, for from now on thou shalt have wars. ¹⁰ Then Asa was wroth with the seer and put him in the prison house, for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa killed some of the people at the same time.

¹ A Psalm of David. ¶ Aleph Do not be angry with the evildoers, neither be thou envious of the workers of iniquity.

⁷ ¶ Daleth Be silent before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not be angry with him who prospers in his way, with the man who brings wicked devices to pass.

³ ¶ The perfection of the upright shall guide them in the way, but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.

²¹ Then they shall pass through this land, fatigued and hungry, and it shall come to pass that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves and curse their king and their God. And raising their face high, ²² they shall look upon the earth and behold tribulation and gross darkness, darkness and anguish; and they shall be submerged in gross darkness.

⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy and spoke against that which Paul said, contradicting and blaspheming. ⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas speaking with freedom, said, It was necessary indeed that the word of God should first have been spoken to you; but seeing ye put it from you and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.

⁹ And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, who has authority over these plagues; and they did not repent to give him glory. ¹⁰ And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the throne of the beast; and its kingdom was filled with darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, ¹¹ and blasphemed the God of the heaven because of their pains and their sores and did not repent of their deeds.

¹⁵ My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream, ¹⁶ which was hidden by ice and covered by snow. ¹⁷ Which in the time of heat, they vanish; when they are heated, they disappear out of their place; ¹⁸ they turn aside out of the paths of their way; they go to nothing and perish. ¹⁹ The travelers of Tema looked; the traveling companies of Sheba waited for them. ²⁰ They were put to shame because of their hope; they came there and found them confused. ²¹ Now ye are certainly as they; ye have seen the torment and are afraid. ²² ¶ Did I say, Bring unto me and pay for me out of your substance ²³ and deliver me from the enemy’s hand and ransom me from the hand of the mighty?

¹³ He has put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintances are verily estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ Those that dwell in my house and my maids have counted me for a stranger; I was an alien in their sight. ¹⁶ I called my slave, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My spirit came to be strange to my wife, although I intreated her for the sons of my own body.

¹⁵ ¶ The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; the weakness of the poor is their poverty.

²⁰ ¶ The poor is hated even of his own neighbour, but many are those who love the rich.

¹³ And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country and there wasted his estate with riotous living. ¹⁴ And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. ¹⁵ And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

¹ ¶ Thou shalt not admit a false rumour; put not thine hand with the wicked to be a false witness.

¹¹ Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him innocent that takes his name in vain.

¹⁶ When a false witness rises up against any man to testify rebellion against him, ¹⁷ then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, who shall be in those days; ¹⁸ and the judges shall make diligent inquisition; and, behold, if the witness is a false witness and has testified falsely against his brother, ¹⁹ then shall ye do unto him as he had thought to have done unto his brother; so shalt thou put the evil away from among you. ²⁰ And those who remain shall hear and fear and shall never again commit any such evil among you. ²¹ And thine eye shall not pity, but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

⁹ Now therefore do not hold him guiltless, for thou art a wise man and knowest what thou should do with him, but thou shalt bring his hoar head down to Sheol with blood.

³ What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? ⁴ Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

¹⁹ a false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

⁹ ¶ The false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

²⁸ ¶ The false witness shall perish, but the man that hears shall stand fast in his word.

²⁴ And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and even before they reached the bottom of the den, the lions had the mastery of them, and broke all their bones in pieces.

²⁰ And ye shall also say, Behold, thy slave Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will reconcile his wrath with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.

¹⁹ And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither retain the memory of the wickedness that thy slave did the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should guard it in his heart. ²⁰ For I, thy slave, know that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king. ²¹ But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this because he cursed the LORD’s anointed? ²² Then David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? Shall anyone be put to death today in Israel? Do I not know that I am this day king over Israel? ²³ And the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king swore unto him. ²⁴ ¶ Mephibosheth, the son of Saul, also came down to meet the king and had neither washed his feet nor trimmed his beard nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace. ²⁵ And after he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, the king said unto him, Why didst thou not go with me, Mephibosheth? ²⁶ And he answered, My lord, O king, my slave deceived me, for thy slave said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride upon it and go to the king because thy slave is lame. ²⁷ And he has slandered thy slave unto my lord the king, but my lord the king is as an angel of God; do therefore what is good in thine eyes. ²⁸ For all of my father’s house were worthy of death before my lord the king; yet thou didst set thy slave among those that eat at thy own table. What righteousness, therefore, have I yet to cry any more unto the king? ²⁹ And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more words? I have determined, Thou and Ziba divide the land. ³⁰ And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Let him even take it all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house. ³¹ ¶ Barzillai, the Gileadite, also came down from Rogelim and went over the Jordan with the king to conduct him over the Jordan. ³² Now Barzillai was a very aged man, of eighty years, who had provided the king with sustenance while he was at Mahanaim, for he was a very great man. ³³ And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem. ³⁴ And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem? ³⁵ I am this day eighty years old, and shall I tell the difference between the good and the bad? Shall thy slave enjoy what I eat or what I drink? Shall I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should thy slave be yet a burden unto my lord the king? ³⁶ Thy slave will go a little way over the Jordan with the king, and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward? ³⁷ Let thy slave, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in my own city and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy slave Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king, and do to him what shall seem good unto thee. ³⁸ And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do with him that which shall seem good unto thee, and whatever thou shalt ask of me, that will I do for thee. ³⁹ And all the people went over the Jordan. And when the king had also come over, the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned unto his own place.

²⁴ If I laughed at them, they did not believe it; and they did not cast down the light of my countenance. ²⁵ I approved their way and sat at the head and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.

¹² And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat thy favour.

¹⁵ In the light of the king’s countenance is life, and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

⁸ ¶ A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that has it; wherever it turns, it prospers.

¹⁶ ¶ A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.

¹² ¶ The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion, but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

¹⁴ ¶ A gift in secret pacifies anger, and a bribe in the bosom strong wrath.

²⁶ ¶ Many seek the ruler’s favour, but each man’s judgment comes from the LORD.

¹¹ And entering into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother; and falling down, they worshipped him; and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold and frankincense and myrrh.

²³ For the wages of sin is death, but the grace of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹¹ My friends and my companions stand aloof from my sore, and my kinsmen stand afar off.

⁸ Thou hast put away mine acquaintances far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them; I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

¹⁸ Thou hast put lover and friend far from me, and placed my acquaintances into darkness.

¹⁵ now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no one remembered that same poor man. ¹⁶ Then I said, Wisdom is better than strength: even though the poor man’s knowledge is despised, and his words are not heard.

³⁸ And he cried out, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. ³⁹ And those who went before rebuked him that he should remain silent; but he cried out so much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. ⁴⁰ And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought unto him, and when he was come near, he asked him,

⁶ But ye have despised the poor. Do not the rich oppress you with tyranny and draw you with violence to the courts?

¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you says unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; but ye do not give them those things which are needful for the body; what shall it profit them?

¹⁷ But whosoever has this world’s goods and sees his brother have need and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how does the charity of God abide in him? ¹⁸ My little children, let us not love in word neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

¹¹ Moreover by them is thy slave warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.

¹ ¶ My son, if thou wilt receive my words and hide my commandments within thee ² so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom and apply thine heart to intelligence, ³ yea, if thou criest for understanding and givest thy voice unto intelligence, ⁴ if thou seekest her as silver and searchest for her as for hid treasures, ⁵ then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD gives wisdom; out of his mouth comes knowledge and intelligence. ⁷ He keeps the person of the upright; he is a buckler to those that walk perfectly, ⁸ keeping the paths of judgment and the way of his merciful ones. ⁹ Then shalt thou understand righteousness and judgment and equity, yea, every good path.

¹⁸ She is a tree of life to those that lay hold upon her, and blessed is every one that retains her.

²¹ ¶ My son, do not let them depart from thine eyes; keep sound wisdom and discretion,

⁴ He taught me and said unto me, Sustain thine heart with my words; keep my commandments, and live.

⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee; love her, and she shall keep thee.

²¹ Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

³⁵ For whosoever finds me shall find life and shall obtain the will of the LORD. ³⁶ But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those that hate me love death.

²⁰ ¶ He who has understanding in the word shall find good, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.

¹⁶ ¶ Of what good is the price to buy wisdom in the hand of the fool, seeing he has no heart to understand?

¹⁸ For it is a delightful thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall be ordered together in thy lips.

²⁶ And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

²⁵ He that loves his life shall lose it, and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

²¹ He that has my commandments and keeps them, he it is that loves me; and he that loves me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself to him.

¹⁰ For he that desires to love life and see the good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil and his lips that they speak no guile;

⁵ ¶ A false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

¹⁵ The ancient and venerable to look upon is the head; the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail. ¹⁶ For the governors of this people are deceivers, and those who are governed by them are lost. ¹⁷ Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall he have mercy on their fatherless and widows, for every one is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

²⁵ I have heard what those prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. ²⁶ How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies and that prophesy the deceit of their own heart? ²⁷ Do they not think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which each one tells his neighbour, so much that their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal? ²⁸ The prophet with whom the dream came, let him tell the dream; and he with whom my word came, let him speak my true word. What is the chaff to the wheat? said the LORD. ²⁹ Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? ³⁰ Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words each one from his neighbour. ³¹ Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that sweeten their tongues and say, He said. ³² Behold, I am against those that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and did tell them, and caused my people to err by their lies, and by their flattery; yet I did not send them, nor command them; and they did not profit this people at all, said the LORD.

¹⁵ Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD has not sent thee; and thou hast made this people to trust in a lie. ¹⁶ Therefore thus hath the LORD said; Behold, I will send thee away from upon the face of the earth; this year thou shalt die because thou hast spoken rebellion against the LORD. ¹⁷ So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

³¹ Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus hath the LORD said concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah has prophesied unto you, and I did not send him, and he caused you to trust upon a lie; ³² therefore thus hath the LORD said; Behold, I visit upon Shemaiah the Nehelamite and upon his generation: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold that good which I do unto my people, said the LORD, because he has spoken rebellion against the LORD.

²² Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and ye strengthen the hands of the wicked that he should not leave his wicked way, encouraging him:

⁸ And then shall that Wicked one be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the Spirit of his mouth and remove with the clarity of his coming: ⁹ that wicked one, who shall come by the working of Satan with great power and signs and lying miracles, ¹⁰ and with all deception of iniquity working in those that perish because they did not receive the charity of the truth, to be saved.

¹ ¶ Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, listening to spirits of error and doctrines of demons; ² that in hypocrisy shall speak lies; having their conscience seared as with a hot iron;

¹ ¶ But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who covertly shall bring in destructive sects and shall deny the Lord that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. ² And many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be blasphemed; ³ ¶ and in covetousness they shall make merchandise of you with feigned words, upon whom the condemnation from a long time ago does not delay, and their perdition does not sleep.

²⁰ And the beast was taken and with it the false prophet that wrought miracles in its presence, with which he had deceived those that had taken the mark of the beast and had worshipped its image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

⁸ But the fearful and unbelieving and the abominable and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

¹⁵ But outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the fornicators and the murderers and the idolaters and whosoever loves and makes a lie.

³⁶ ¶ And Abigail came to Nabal, and, behold, he held a banquet in his house like the banquet of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; therefore, she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.

²⁴ Then Joab came to the king and said, What hast thou done? Behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast let him go? ²⁵ Dost thou not know that Abner, the son of Ner, came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in and to know all that thou doest?

³⁹ And I am this day a tender anointed king, and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me; the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.

¹⁵ The posts went out in haste by the king’s commandment, and the law was given in Shushan, the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.

⁷ ¶ Excellent speech is not suitable for a fool: much less lying lips for a prince!

¹ ¶ As snow in summer and as rain in harvest, so honour is not suited for a fool.

²¹ For three things the earth is disquieted, and the fourth it cannot bear: ²² For a slave when he reigns; and a fool when he is filled with bread;

⁵ There is another evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceeds from the ruler: ⁶ Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich are seated in a low place. ⁷ I saw slaves upon horses, and princes walking as slaves upon the earth.

⁵ And the people shall do violence, one against another, and each one against his neighbour; the child shall rise up against the ancient and the base against the honourable.

¹¹ Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning that they may continue their drunkenness; that continue until night until wine inflames them! ¹² And the harp and the viol, the tambourine and flutes and wine are in their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, nor consider the work of his hands.

¹² Therefore the Lord GOD of the hosts did call in this day unto weeping and to mourning and to baldness and to girding with sackcloth: ¹³ And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine while they say, let us eat and drink for tomorrow we shall die. ¹⁴ This was revealed in my ears by the LORD of the hosts, That surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you until ye die, saith the Lord GOD of the hosts.

³ They make the king glad with their wickedness and the princes with their lies. ⁴ They are all adulterers as an oven heated by the baker who shall cease from waking after he has kneaded the dough until it is leavened. ⁵ In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with a wineskin; he stretched out his hand with the scorners.

¹ ¶ Do not rejoice, O Israel, for joy, as the peoples; for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved the salary of a harlot upon every threshing floor.

³ Ye that put far away the evil day and cause the seat of violence to come near; ⁴ that lie upon beds of ivory and stretch themselves upon their couches and eat the lambs out of the flock and the calves out of the midst of the stall; ⁵ that chant to the sound of the flute and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David; ⁶ that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

¹⁹ ¶ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day;

²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom.

⁹ Be afflicted and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness.

¹⁵ ¶ And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. ¹⁶ And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, ¹⁷ So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren and their sin, for they did unto thee evil; and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the slaves of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spoke unto him. ¹⁸ And his brethren also went and fell down before his face, and they said, Behold, we are thy slaves. ¹⁹ And Joseph said unto them, Fear not; for am I in the place of God? ²⁰ But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God thought it out unto good, to bring to pass that which we see this day, to give life to many people. ²¹ Now therefore fear ye not; I will nourish you and your little ones. Thus he comforted them and spoke to their heart.

¹⁶ ¶ A fool’s wrath is presently known, but he who covers the injury is sane.

¹⁸ ¶ A wrathful man stirs up strife, but he that is slow to anger appeases strife.

³² ¶ He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city.

¹⁴ ¶ To release the waters (to speak rashly) is the beginning of contention; therefore, leave off strife before it gets started.

³ ¶ It is an honour for a man to cease from strife, but every fool will be meddling.

²¹ ¶ If thy enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,

⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless those that curse you, do good to those that hate you, and pray for those who speak evil about you, and persecute you; ⁴⁵ that ye may be sons of your Father who is in the heavens, for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

²¹ ¶ Then Peter came to him and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? until seven times? ²² Jesus said unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times, but, Until seventy times seven.

¹⁸ If it can be done, as much as is possible on your part, live in peace with all men. ¹⁹ Not defending yourselves, dearly beloved; but rather give place unto the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. ²⁰ Therefore, if thine enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

³² and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another even as God has forgiven you in Christ.

¹² ¶ Clothed, therefore, (as the elect of God, holy and beloved) with bowels of mercies, with kindness, with humility, with meekness, with tolerance, ¹³ forbearing one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a quarrel against another: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

¹⁹ ¶ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

⁴ And as the light of the morning when the sun rises, of a morning shining forth without clouds, as the shining forth through light rain upon the tender grass of the earth:

⁸ Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine, and Haman had fallen upon the bed upon which Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? When this word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face.

⁶ He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass as the dew that waters the earth.

³ as the dew of Hermon, that descends upon the mountains of Zion; for there the LORD commands blessing and eternal life.

¹⁴ ¶ The wrath of the king is as a messenger of death, but the wise man will avoid it. ¹⁵ In the light of the king’s countenance is life, and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

² ¶ The fear of the king is as the roaring of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own soul.

¹⁵ ¶ As a roaring lion and a hungry bear, so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.

⁴ because the word of the king is his power and who may say unto him, What doest thou?

¹² For this cause the king was angry and very furious and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. ¹³ And the decree went forth, and the wise men were taken to be slain, and they sought Daniel and his fellows to kill them.

¹⁹ ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; therefore he spoke, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was customary to be heated. ²⁰ And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. ²¹ Then these men were bound in their coats, their undergarments, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. ²² Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. ²³ And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

¹⁹ and by the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him; whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he humbled.

⁵ I will be as the dew unto Israel; he shall flourish as the lily and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.

⁷ ¶ And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples as the dew of the LORD, as the rains upon the grass, which did not expect a man, nor did they expect the sons of men.

⁴ And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of those that kill the body and, after that, have no more that they can do. ⁵ But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, who, after being killed, has power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass after this that Absalom, the son of David, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar, and Amnon, the son of David, loved her. ² And Amnon was so distressed that he fell sick for his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and Amnon thought it difficult for him to do any thing to her. ³ But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, and Jonadab was a very astute man. ⁴ And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son, becoming thinner from day to day? Wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister. ⁵ And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed and pretend to be sick; and when thy father comes to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come and give me food and make the food in my sight that I may see it and eat it at her hand. ⁶ So Amnon lay down and pretended to be sick, and when the king came to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar, my sister, come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight that I may eat at her hand. ⁷ Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon’s house and make him something to eat. ⁸ So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, and he was lying down. And she took flour and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked the cakes. ⁹ Then she took a pan and poured them out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Send everyone out from me. And they all went out from him. ¹⁰ Then Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the food into the chamber that I may eat from thy hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon, her brother. ¹¹ And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister. ¹² And she answered him, No, my brother, do not force me, for no such thing ought to be done in Israel. Do not commit this folly. ¹³ And I, where shall I go with my reproach? And as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now, therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king, for he will not withhold me from thee. ¹⁴ Howbeit, he would not hearken unto her voice, but, being stronger than she, forced her and lay with her. ¹⁵ Then Amnon hated her exceedingly so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone. ¹⁶ And she said unto him, There is no cause; this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her. ¹⁷ Then he called his servant that ministered unto him and said, Put now this woman out from me and bolt the door after her. ¹⁸ And she had a garment of different colours upon her, for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out and bolted the door after her.

¹⁹ The impetuous waters break the stones and wash away the dust of the earth; in like manner thou dost cause man to lose hope.

¹ ¶ A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son is sadness unto his mother.

²⁰ ¶ The wise son makes a glad father, but the foolish man despises his mother.

²¹ ¶ He that begets a fool does it to his sorrow, and the father of a fool shall have no joy.

²⁵ ¶ The foolish son is a grief to his father and bitterness to her that bore him.

⁹ ¶ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

¹⁹ ¶ It is better to dwell in the wilderness than with a contentious and an angry woman.

²⁴ ¶ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

¹⁵ ¶ A continual dripping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

¹⁸ Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun, which I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knows whether he shall be a wise man or a fool, he who shall have rule over all my labour in which I have laboured and in which I have showed myself wise under the sun? This is also vanity.

⁷ The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred and who spoke unto me and swore unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from there.

¹ ¶ Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and charged him, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. ² Arise, go to Padanaram to the house of Bethuel, thy mother’s father, and take thee a wife from there of the daughters of Laban, thy mother’s brother. ³ And may God Almighty bless thee and make thee fruitful and multiply thee that thou may be a congregation of peoples ⁴ and give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee and to thy seed with thee; that thou may inherit the land in which thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

¹⁶ then it shall be, when he makes his sons to inherit that which he has, that he may not give the right of the firstborn unto the son of the beloved in preference over the son of the hated, who is indeed the firstborn;

²³ So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.

⁶ In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

²² ¶ A good man shall leave an inheritance to his children’s children, and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

²² ¶ Whosoever found a wife found a good thing and has attained the favour of the LORD.

¹⁴ Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be burdensome to you, for I seek not your things, but you; for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

¹⁷ Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning.

⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

⁴ ¶ He that deals with a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. ⁵ ¶ He that gathers in summer is a wise son, but he that sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame.

²⁴ ¶ The slothful man hides his hand in his bosom and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

¹³ ¶ Do not love sleep lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

²¹ for the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall cause them to wear rags.

³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

¹⁰ His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant; they are all dumb dogs; they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, they love to slumber.

¹¹ ¶ And this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awaken ourselves out of sleep, for now is our saving health nearer than when we believed. ¹² The night is past, and the day is come; let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us clothe ourselves with the weapons of light.

¹⁴ Therefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.

¹⁰ For even when we were with you, this we declared unto you, that if anyone desires not to work neither should he eat.

¹⁸ to such as keep his covenant and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

¹ ¶ My son, forget not my law, but let thine heart keep my commandments:

¹³ ¶ Whosoever despises the word shall perish by it: but he that fears the commandment shall be rewarded.

³² ¶ He that refuses chastening despises his own soul, but he that hears reproof has an understanding heart.

¹⁷ ¶ The highway of the upright is to separate himself from evil; he that keeps his way preserves his soul.

²³ ¶ Whosoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.

⁵ ¶ Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse; he that keeps his soul shall be far from them.

¹⁸ ¶ Without prophetic vision, the people shall perish, but he that keeps the law is blessed.

⁵ Whosoever keeps the commandment shall experience no evil thing, and a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment.

¹³ ¶ The conclusion of the entire sermon is heard: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole happiness of man.

²³ But this thing I commanded them, saying, Hear my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the way that I have commanded you that it may be well unto you.

⁵ He heard the sound of the shofar and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he that takes warning shall deliver his soul.

²⁸ And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right; do this, and thou shalt live.

²⁸ But he said, Rather, blessed are those that hear the word of God and keep it.

¹⁵ ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments;

²¹ He that has my commandments and keeps them, he it is that loves me; and he that loves me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself to him. ²² Judas, not Iscariot, said unto him, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us and not unto the world?strong> ²³ Jesus answered and said unto him, He who loves me will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him and dwell with him.

¹⁰ If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. ¹¹ These things I have spoken unto you that my joy may abide in you and that your joy might be fulfilled. ¹² This is my commandment, That ye love one another as I have loved you. ¹³ Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his soul for his friends. ¹⁴ Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you.

¹⁹ Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments of God.

³ ¶ And in this we do know that we have known him if we keep his commandments. ⁴ He that says, I have known him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

²² and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

³ For this is the charity of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grievous.

¹⁴ Blessed are those who do his commandments that their power and authority might be in the tree of life and they may enter in through the gates into the city.

⁷ If there should be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy towns in thy land which the LORD thy God gives thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother, ⁸ but thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he lacks. ⁹ Keep thyself that there not be a thought of Belial in thy heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother to give him nothing; for he shall cry unto the LORD against thee, and it shall be a sin unto thee. ¹⁰ Thou shalt surely give unto him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him because for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works and in all that thou puttest thine hand to. ¹¹ For the poor shall never cease out of the land; therefore, I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor and to thy needy, in thy land. ¹² ¶ And if thy brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, is sold unto thee and serves thee six years, then in the seventh year thou shalt send him forth from thee free. ¹³ And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not send him away empty. ¹⁴ Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock and out of thy threshing floor and out of thy winepress; of that with which the LORD thy God has blessed thee thou shalt give unto him.

⁶ and he shall pay for the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and because he had no pity.

²⁴ ¶ There are those who scatter, and more is added unto them; and there are those who withhold more than is just, but come to poverty. ²⁵ ¶ The soul who is a blessing unto others shall be made fat, and he that fills shall be filled also himself.

¹⁴ ¶ Man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, and the recompense of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.

²¹ ¶ The sinner despises his neighbour, but he that has mercy on the poor is blessed.

³¹ ¶ He that oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he that has mercy on the poor, honours him.

⁸ ¶ He that by usury and unjust gain increases his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.

²⁷ ¶ He that gives unto the poor shall never lack, but he that hides his eyes from the poor shall have many a curse.

¹ ¶ Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days.

⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother? ⁸ ¶ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall gather thee. ⁹ Then shalt thou call, and thou shalt hear the LORD; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; ¹⁰ and if thou pour out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: ¹¹ And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

⁴¹ He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward, and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. ⁴² And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

⁴⁰ And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, ye have done it unto me.

³⁸ give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down and shaken together and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye measure out it shall be measured to you again.

⁶ ¶ But this I say, He who sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly, and he who sows in blessings shall also reap blessings. ⁷ Each one according as they purpose in their heart, so let them give, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. ⁸ And God is able to make all grace abound in you that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

¹⁷ Not because I desire a gift, but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.

¹⁰ For God is not unjust to forget your work and labour of charity which ye have showed in his name, having helped the saints and helping them.

²⁴ ¶ He that cuts short chastening hates his son, but he that loves him chastens him early.

¹⁵ ¶ Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

¹³ Do not withhold correction from the child; for if thou shall beat him with the rod, he shall not die. ¹⁴ Thou shalt beat him with the rod and shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

¹⁵ ¶ The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself shall bring his mother to shame.

¹⁷ ¶ Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; he shall give delight unto thy soul.

⁷ If ye endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father does not chasten? ⁸ But if ye are without chastisement, of which all the sons are partakers, then ye are bastards, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence; is it not much better to be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and we shall live? ¹⁰ For they verily for a few days chastened us as it seemed good unto them, but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

³⁰ Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do I not know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion and unto the confusion of thy mother’s shame? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the land, thou shalt not be established nor thy kingdom. Therefore, now send and bring him unto me, for he shall surely die.

⁷ then Saul said unto his slaves that stood about him, Hear now, ye sons of Jemini, will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds ⁸ that all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one that shows me that my son has made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me or shows unto me that my son has stirred up my slave against me, to lie in wait against me, as at this day? ⁹ Then Doeg, the Edomite, who was set over the slaves of Saul, answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob to Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he enquired of the LORD for him and gave him provision and gave him the sword of Goliath, the Philistine. ¹¹ Then the king sent to call Ahimelech, the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob; and they all came to the king. ¹² And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.

¹⁷ And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I, for thou hast repaid me with good, whereas I have repaid thee with evil. ¹⁸ And thou hast showed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me; forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thy hand, thou didst not kill me. ¹⁹ For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe and sound? The LORD reward thee with good for that which thou hast done unto me this day. ²⁰ And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel shall be firm and stable in thy hand. ²¹ Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house. ²² Then David swore unto Saul. And Saul went home, but David and his men went up unto the fortress.

²¹ ¶ Then Saul said, I have sinned; return, my son David; for I will do no more harm unto thee because my life was precious in thine eyes today. Behold, I have played the fool and have erred exceedingly. ²² And David answered and said, Behold the king’s spear! Let one of the servants come over and take it. ²³ The LORD render to each one his righteousness and his faithfulness, for the LORD delivered thee into my hand today, but I would not stretch forth my hand against the LORD’s anointed. ²⁴ And, behold, as thy life has been esteemed today in my eyes, so let my life be esteemed in the eyes of the LORD and let him deliver me out of all affliction. ²⁵ Then Saul said to David, Blessed art thou, my son David; without a doubt thou shalt do great things and prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

⁵ ¶ And when King David came to Bahurim, behold, a man of the family of the house of Saul came forth, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came forth cursing ⁶ and casting stones at David and at all the slaves of King David; and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

²⁴ ¶ Do not meddle with an angry man, and with a furious man thou shalt not go: ²⁵ Lest thou learn his ways and get a snare to thy soul.

²⁸ ¶ The man whose spirit has no restraint is like a city that is broken down and without walls.

²² ¶ The angry man stirs up strife, and the furious man abounds in transgression.

¹⁰ Who shall count the dust of Jacob and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let my soul die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!

¹⁶ who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, a food which thy fathers knew not, afflicting thee and proving thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

²⁹ O that they were wise, if they were prudent, they would understand their latter end!

³⁷ Schin Mark the perfect, and behold the upright, for the end of each one of them is peace.

¹² ¶ Cause us to learn this that we might number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

¹⁴ O satisfy us early with thy mercy, and we shall sing and be glad all our days.

⁸ My son, hearken unto the chastening of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

¹ ¶ Hearken, ye sons, unto the chastening of the father, and pay attention that ye might know understanding.

³⁴ Blessed is the man that hears me, keeping vigil at my gates, waiting at the threshold of my doors. ³⁵ For whosoever finds me shall find life and shall obtain the will of the LORD.

¹⁵ ¶ The way of the fool is right in his own eyes, but he that hears counsel is wise.

¹⁹ ¶ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day; ²⁰ and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried; ²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom.

¹⁹ And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer comes; ²⁰ now therefore, come and let us slay him and cast him into a cistern, and we will say, Some evil beast has devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

⁴ Then Joseph said unto his brethren, Now come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. ⁵ Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves that ye sold me here, for God sent me before you for life. ⁶ For these two years the famine has been in the land, and yet there are five years in which there shall neither be plowing nor harvest. ⁷ And God sent me before you that you might remain in the earth and that you might be given life by great liberty. ⁸ So now it was not you that sent me here, but God; and he has made me as a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his house and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

²⁰ But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God thought it out unto good, to bring to pass that which we see this day, to give life to many people.

²⁵ but when she came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

¹³ ¶ But if he determines something, who can turn him? His soul desired it, and he did it.

¹¹ For they intended evil against thee; they imagined a wicked device, but they did not prevail.

¹⁰ The LORD brings the counsel of the Gentiles to nought; he makes the devices of the peoples of no effect. ¹¹ The counsel of the LORD stands for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

⁴ They have said, Come and let us cut them off from being a people that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

² ¶ The good man shall attain the favour of the LORD, but the man of wicked thoughts he will condemn.

¹ ¶ Of man are the preparations of the heart, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.

⁹ ¶ The heart of man devises his way, but the LORD directs his steps.

¹ ¶ The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water, he turns it wherever he will.

³⁰ ¶ There is no wisdom nor intelligence nor counsel against the LORD.

²⁹ Behold, this only have I found: that God has made man upright, but they have sought out many perversions.

⁶ Let us go up against Judah and vex it, and let us divide it between us and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal: ⁷ Thus saith the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

²⁴ ¶ The LORD of the hosts has sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:

²⁶ This is the counsel that is purposed upon the whole earth; and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the Gentiles. ²⁷ For the LORD of the hosts has purposed, and who shall disannul it? His hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

³⁵ and all the inhabitants of the earth are counted as nothing; and in the army of heaven and in the inhabitants of the earth, he does according to his will; nor is there anyone who can interfere with his hand and say unto him, What doest thou?

²⁴ With the province in peace and in abundance, he shall enter and do that which his fathers have never done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall distribute prey and spoil and riches to his soldiers; and against the fortresses he shall forecast his devices, even for a time. ²⁵ And he shall stir up his forces and his heart against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall move to the war with a great and mighty army, but he shall not prevail, for they shall betray him.

⁴ and took counsel that they might take Jesus by guile and kill him. ⁵ But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.

⁶³ saying, Lord, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. ⁶⁴ Command therefore that the sepulchre be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night and steal him away and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead; so the last error shall be worse than the first.

²⁷ For of a truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together (in this city), ²⁸ to do that which thy hand and thy counsel had determined beforehand must be done.

³⁸ And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men and let them alone; for if this counsellor or this work is of men, it will come to nought, ³⁹ but if it is of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest ye be found fighting against God.

¹¹ in him in whom likewise we have obtained an inheritance, having had the way marked out beforehand according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his own will,

¹⁷ In which God, desiring to show more abundantly unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath, ¹⁸ that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us,

⁸ and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, even to those who stumble at the word, not obeying in that for which they were ordained.

⁴ For there are certain men crept in unawares without fear or reverence of God, who from beforehand have been ordained unto this condemnation, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness and denying God who alone has dominion, and our Lord Jesus, the Christ.

² Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God, gold for the things of gold, and silver for the things of silver, and brass for the things of brass, and iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, black stones and of different colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance. ³ Moreover, because I have my delight in the house of my God, I have in my own treasury, gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the house of the sanctuary:

¹⁷ I know also, my God, that thou dost try the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things; and now have I seen with joy that thy people, who are present here, have given willingly unto thee.

⁸ But the LORD said to David, my father, Forasmuch as it was in thy heart to build a house for my name, thou didst well in that it was in thy heart;

¹⁵ My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream,

⁵ He that speaks flattery to his neighbour, even the eyes of his sons shall fail.

⁹ Surely the sons of Adam are vanity, and the sons of nobles are a lie; to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

¹ ¶ Better is the poor that walks in his integrity than he that is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

⁴¹ ¶ And with Jesus sitting in front of the ark of the offering, he beheld how the people cast money into the ark and many that were rich cast in much. ⁴² And as there came a certain poor widow, she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. ⁴³ Then calling his disciples, he said unto them, Verily I say unto you that this poor widow has cast more in than all those who have cast into the treasury, ⁴⁴ for they all did cast in of their abundance, but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

⁶ But Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? She has wrought a good work on me. ⁷ For ye have the poor with you always, and whenever ye will, ye may do them good; but me ye have not always. ⁸ She has done what she could, for she has anticipated anointing my body for the burial.

² how that in a great trial of tribulation the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. ³ For to their power, I bear record, and even beyond their power they were willing of themselves,

¹² For if there is first a willing desire, it is accepted according to what a person has and not according to what they do not have.

² for the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the times of the ages

⁹ The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever; the rights of the LORD are true, they are all just.

¹³ Mem His soul shall rest in that which is good; and his seed shall inherit the earth.

¹⁸ Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those that fear him, upon those that wait for his mercy ¹⁹ to deliver their souls from death and to keep them alive in the famine.

⁹ Teth O fear the LORD, ye his saints; for those that fear him lack nothing. ¹⁰ Jod The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, but those that seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing. ¹¹ ¶ Caph Come, ye children, hearken unto me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

⁹ Surely his saving health is near those that fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.

¹⁶ With long life I will satisfy him and show him my saving health.

¹⁷ But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon those that fear him, and his righteousness unto the children’s children,

¹⁸ Koph The LORD is near unto all those that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. ¹⁹ Resh He will fulfil the desire of those that fear him; he also will hear their cry and will save them. ²⁰ Schin The LORD preserves all those that love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

²⁷ ¶ The fear of the LORD shall prolong days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

²¹ ¶ No iniquity shall overtake the righteous: but the wicked shall be filled with evil.

²⁶ ¶ In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence, and there his sons shall have hope. ²⁷ The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

¹⁶ Then those that feared the LORD spoke one to another, and the LORD hearkened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for those that feared the LORD and for those that think in his name. ¹⁷ And they shall be mine, said the LORD of the hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son that serves him.

² But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness be born, and in his wings he shall bring saving health; and ye shall go forth and jump like calves of the herd.

⁶ Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

³¹ Then the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} had rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria and were edified, walking in the fear of the Lord, and with the comfort of the Holy Spirit they were multiplied.

²⁸ And we now know that unto those who love God, all things help them unto good, to those who according to the purpose are called to be saints.

¹¹ Not that I speak in respect of want, for I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content. ¹² I know both how to be humbled, and I know how to have an abundance; in everything and by all things I am instructed, both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

⁸ For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

⁶ ¶ But piety with contentment is great gain. ⁷ For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. ⁸ So that, sustenance and covering, let us be content with this. ⁹ For those that desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.

¹⁸ And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work and will save me for his heavenly kingdom, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

⁵ Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as ye have; for he has said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. ⁶ So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

¹¹ Why dost thou withdraw thy hand, even thy right hand? Why dost thou hide it in thy bosom.

²⁷ ¶ The deceitful man does not even roast that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.

¹⁹ ¶ The way of the slothful man is as a hedge of thorns, but the path of the righteous is made plain.

¹⁵ ¶ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and the negligent soul shall suffer hunger.

³⁰ ¶ I went by the field of the slothful and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding, ³¹ and, behold, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered its face, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it and received chastening. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as one that travels and thy want as an armed man.

¹³ ¶ The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. ¹⁴ ¶ As the door turns upon his hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed. ¹⁵ ¶ The slothful hides his hand in his bosom; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth. ¹⁶ ¶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can give him counsel.

²³ And he answered and said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

²⁰ And he, answering, said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dips with me in the dish.

¹¹ so that all Israel shall hear and fear and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

²¹ Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall die; so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear and fear.

⁸ Chasten not a scorner lest he hate thee; chasten a wise man, and he will love thee. ⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. ¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

⁵ ¶ The fool despises his father’s chastening, but he that regards reproof shall become prudent.

¹⁰ ¶ Reproof is of more benefit to a wise man than a hundred stripes to a fool.

¹¹ ¶ When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise, and by instructing the wise, he receives wisdom.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten; be zealous therefore, and repent.

¹⁸ ¶ When anyone has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother and when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them, ¹⁹ then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him and bring him out unto the elders of his city and unto the gate of his place; ²⁰ and they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not hear our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard. ²¹ Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall die; so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear and fear.

⁵ ¶ He that gathers in summer is a wise son, but he that sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame.

² ¶ A prudent slave shall have rule over a son that causes shame and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

²² Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. ²³ Buy the truth and sell it not, also wisdom and instruction and understanding. ²⁴ The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice, and he that begets a wise child shall have joy with him. ²⁵ Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bore thee shall rejoice.

⁷ ¶ Whosoever keeps the law is a wise son, but he that is a companion of gluttons shames his father.

¹⁴ ¶ Blessed is the man that fears God always, but he that hardens his heart shall fall into evil.

²⁴ ¶ Whosoever robs his father or his mother and says, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of the destroyer.

¹¹ There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks at his father, and despises the teaching of his mother, the ravens shall pluck it out of the river, and the young eagles shall eat it.

¹² and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of the estate that falls to me. And he divided unto them his living. ¹³ And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country and there wasted his estate with riotous living. ¹⁴ And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. ¹⁵ And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. ¹⁶ And he longed to fill his belly with the husks that the swine ate, but no one gave them unto him.

³⁰ But as soon as this thy son was come who has devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed the fatted calf for him.

¹ ¶ When there arises among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and gives thee a sign or a wonder, ² and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them, ³ thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God proves you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. ⁴ Ye shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and hear his voice, and ye shall serve him and cleave unto him.

²² And the LORD said unto him, In what manner? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also; go forth and do so. ²³ Now, therefore, behold, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD has decreed evil concerning thee. ²⁴ Then Zedekiah, the son of Chenaanah, went near and smote Micaiah on the cheek and said, Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go from me to speak unto thee? ²⁵ And Micaiah said, Behold, thou shalt see in that day when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself. ²⁶ Then the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah and carry him back unto Amon, the governor of the city, and to Joash, the king’s son ²⁷ and say, Thus hath the king said, Put this fellow in the prison and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I return in peace. ²⁸ And Micaiah said, If thou return at all in peace, the LORD has not spoken by me. Then he said, Hearken, O people, every one of you.

⁷ ¶ Go from the presence of the foolish man when thou dost not perceive in him the lips of knowledge.

¹⁵ ¶ Keep yourselves also from the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

⁶ Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and keep yourselves from the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

¹² Then they understood that he bade them not to keep themselves from the leaven of bread, but from the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

²⁴ And he also said unto them, Take heed what ye hear; with the measure ye measure by, ye shall be measured by others, and unto you that hear shall more be added.

⁶ He answered and said unto them, Well has Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. ⁷ Howbeit in vain do they honor me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. ⁸ For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men as the washing of pots and cups, and many other such like things ye do. ⁹ And he also said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. ¹⁰ For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother, and, Whosoever curses father or mother shall most definitely die. ¹¹ But ye say, It is enough if a man shall say to his father or mother, It is all Corban, (that is to say, my gift to God) whatever with which thou mightest be profited by me. ¹² And ye suffer him to do no more for his father or for his mother, ¹³ invalidating the word of God with your tradition, which ye have given; and many such like things do ye. ¹⁴ And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you and understand;

⁵ And they will not follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.

¹³ For these false apostles are deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And it is no marvel, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. ¹⁵ Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers transform themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works.

¹⁴ That we no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men and cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive,

⁷ But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

³ If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, ⁴ he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but is driven mad concerning questions and controversy of words, of which comes envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, ⁵ perverse disputings of men of corrupt understanding, and destitute of the truth, using piety as a source of gain: from such withdraw thyself.

¹ ¶ But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who covertly shall bring in destructive sects and shall deny the Lord that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. ² And many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be blasphemed;

¹ ¶ Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

¹⁰ ¶ If anyone comes unto you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house neither say unto him, Welcome:

² I know thy works and thy labour and thy patience and how thou canst not bear those who are evil; and thou hast tried those who say they are apostles and are not and hast found them liars,

¹⁰ and set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out and stone him that he may die.

¹³ Then the two men, sons of Belial, came in and sat before him; and those men of Belial witnessed against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth blasphemed God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones that he died.

¹⁶ How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?

¹² If wickedness was sweet in his mouth, if he hid it under his tongue, ¹³ if it seemed good unto him, and he did not forsake it, but savored it within his mouth,

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up the scorn like water?

⁵ His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight; as for all his enemies, he puffs at them.

¹¹ He has said in his heart, God has forgotten; he hides his face; he will never see it.

¹⁴ ¶ The heart of him that has understanding seeks wisdom, but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.

¹⁴ ¶ Therefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that have taken rule over this people which is in Jerusalem. ¹⁵ Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we are at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood we have hid ourselves: ¹⁶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believes shall not make haste. ¹⁷ Judgment also will I lay to the line and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. ¹⁸ And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

⁸ They eat up the sin of my people, and in their iniquity they raise up their soul.

² saying, There was in a city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man; ³ and there was a widow in that city, and she came unto him, saying, Defend me from my adversary. ⁴ And he would not for a while, but afterward he said within himself, Though I do not fear God, nor regard man,

¹¹ Then they suborned men, who said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. ¹² And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes and came upon him and caught him and brought him to the council ¹³ and set up false witnesses, who said, This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law,

³⁴ Surely he scorns the scorners; but he gives grace unto the humble.

²² He went after her straightway, as an ox goes to the slaughter or as a fool to the correction of the stocks,

¹² If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself; but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

¹³ ¶ In the lips of the prudent wisdom is found and is a rod unto the back of him that is void of understanding.

⁶ ¶ A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for strokes.

³ ¶ A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s back.

²² Now therefore do not be mockers lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of the hosts that consumption and destruction are determined upon the whole earth.

²⁰ For the violent one shall be done away with, and the scorner shall be consumed, and all those that rose early unto iniquity shall be cut off:

⁴⁰ Beware, therefore, lest what is spoken of in the prophets come upon you: ⁴¹ Behold, ye despisers, and wonder and perish, for I do a work in your days, a work which ye would in no wise believe, if one should declare it unto you.

⁶ for whom the Lord loves, he chastens and scourges everyone whom he receives as a son.

³ ¶ knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts ⁴ and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the day in which the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. ⁵ Of course, they willingly ignore that the heavens were created of old and the earth standing out of the water and in the water, by the word of God; ⁶ by which the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished; ⁷ but the heavens, which are now, and the earth are conserved by the same word, kept unto the fire in the day of judgment and of perdition of the ungodly men.
