¹ ¶ These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out. ² ¶ It is the glory of God to conceal the word, but the honour of kings is to search out the word. ³ For the height of the heavens and depth of the earth and for the heart of kings, there is no investigation. ⁴ ¶ Take away the dross from the silver, and a vessel shall come forth for the finer. ⁵ Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness. ⁶ ¶ Do not praise thyself in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of great men; ⁷ for it is better that it be said unto thee, Come up here than that thou should be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen. ⁸ ¶ Do not go forth hastily to strive lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof when thy neighbour has put thee to shame. ⁹ Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself and do not uncover the secret to another ¹⁰ lest he that hears it put thee to shame and thine infamy not turn away. ¹¹ ¶ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold inscribed with silver. ¹² As an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold, so is he who reproves a wise man who has a docile ear. ¹³ ¶ As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to those that send him, for he refreshes the soul of his master. ¹⁴ ¶ Whosoever boasts in a gift of falsehood is like clouds and wind without rain. ¹⁵ ¶ By long forbearing a prince is persuaded, and a soft tongue breaks the bones. ¹⁶ ¶ Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. ¹⁷ ¶ Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour’s house lest he be weary of thee and so hate thee. ¹⁸ ¶ A man that bears false witness against his neighbour is a maul and a sword and a sharp arrow. ¹⁹ ¶ Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint. ²⁰ ¶ As he that takes away a garment in cold weather and as vinegar upon soap, so is he that sings songs to a heavy heart. ²¹ ¶ If thy enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, ²² for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee. ²³ ¶ The north wind drives away rain, so does an angry countenance a backbiting tongue. ²⁴ ¶ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop than with a brawling woman and in a wide house. ²⁵ ¶ As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. ²⁶ ¶ A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain and a corrupt spring. ²⁷ ¶ It is not good to eat much honey, so for men to search their own glory is not glory. ²⁸ ¶ The man whose spirit has no restraint is like a city that is broken down and without walls.

³² And he spoke three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.

¹ ¶ The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel;

¹ ¶ A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son is sadness unto his mother.

⁹ And the wiser the preacher became that much more did he teach wisdom to the people, causing them to listen and to search things out, and he composed many proverbs.

¹ ¶ The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

²² Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe and Joah, the son of Asaph, the writer of chronicles, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

² And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

¹ ¶ The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

¹ ¶ The word of the LORD that came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

²⁹ The hidden things of the LORD our God are uncovered unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

⁹ Give, therefore, thy slave a hearing heart to judge thy people that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this thy so great a people? ¹⁰ And the speech pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing and hast not asked for thyself long life neither hast asked riches for thyself nor hast asked the life of thine enemies, but hast asked for thyself understanding to hear judgment, ¹² behold, I have done according to thy words: behold, I have given thee a wise and understanding heart so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. ¹³ And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches and glory so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee in all thy days. ¹⁴ And if thou wilt walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments as thy father David walked, then I will lengthen thy days. ¹⁵ And when Solomon awoke, he beheld it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings and made a banquet for all his slaves. ¹⁶ ¶ In that season two women, that were harlots, came unto the king and stood before him. ¹⁷ And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house, and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. ¹⁸ And it came to pass the third day after I was delivered that this woman was delivered also and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, except the two of us in the house. ¹⁹ And this woman’s child died in the night because she lay on top of him. ²⁰ And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me while thy handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom and laid her dead child in my bosom. ²¹ And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead; but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I had given birth to. ²² And the other woman said, No, but my son is alive, and thy son is dead. And this one said, No, but thy son is dead, and my son is alive. Thus they spoke before the king. ²³ Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that is alive, and thy son is dead. And the other saith, No; but thy son is dead, and my son is alive. ²⁴ And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the king said, Divide the living child in two and give half to the one and half to the other. ²⁶ Then the woman, of whom the living child was, spoke unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it, for she is its mother. ²⁸ And all Israel heard of that judgment which the king had judged, and they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to judge.

²⁹ ¶ And God gave Solomon exceedingly great wisdom and intelligence and magnanimity of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. ³⁰ And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of the Egyptians. ³¹ For he was wiser than all men, than Ethan, the Ezrahite, and Heman and Chalcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and he was named in all nations round about. ³² And he spoke three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five. ³³ And he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springs out of the wall. He also spoke of animals and of fowl and of serpents and of fishes. ³⁴ And they came from all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom.

¹⁵ that search may be made in the book of the records of our fathers; so shalt thou find in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city and hurtful unto kings and provinces and that from old time they form rebellions in the midst of her, for which cause this city was destroyed.

¹⁹ And I commanded, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been made in her

¹⁷ Now, therefore, if it seems good to the king, let there be a search made in the king’s treasure house, which is there in Babylon, whether it is so, that a decree was made by Cyrus, the king, to build this house of God in Jerusalem, and let the king send unto us his will concerning this matter.

⁷ ¶ Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou come unto the perfection of the Almighty? ⁸ It is higher than the heavens; what canst thou do? It is deeper than Sheol; how canst thou know it?

¹⁶ I was a father to the needy; and the cause which I did not know I searched out.

⁴ ¶ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Cause me to know, if thou hast understanding. ⁵ Who ordered its dimensions, if thou knowest? Or who has stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Upon what are its foundations founded? Or who laid its corner stone; ⁷ when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? ⁹ When I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness a swaddling band for it, ¹⁰ and established my decree upon it, and set bars and doors, ¹¹ and said, Thou shalt come unto here, but no further; and there shall the pride of thy waves be stayed. ¹² ¶ Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days? Hast thou shown the dayspring its place, ¹³ that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is transformed as clay to the seal and then stands as a garment; ¹⁵ but the light of the wicked is taken from them, and the high arm is broken. ¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked searching out the deep? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? Or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? Declare if thou knowest it all. ¹⁹ Where is the way to the habitation of the light, and where is the place of the darkness? ²⁰ If thou shalt take it in its borders, and if thou should understand the paths to its house? ²¹ If thou didst know when thou wast to be born or if the number of thy days was to be great? ²² Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow, and hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, ²³ which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the light divided; from where is the east wind scattered upon the earth? ²⁵ ¶ Who has divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters or a way for the lightning of thunder, ²⁶ to cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man; ²⁷ to satisfy the desolate and waste ground and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth? ²⁸ Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of the dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice, and the hoary frost of heaven, who has begotten it? ³⁰ The waters harden as stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

⁴ Their young ones are healthy, they grow up with grain; they go forth and never return unto them again. ⁵ Who freed the wild ass, and who loosed its bands? ⁶ Unto whom I made a house in the wilderness, and his dwellings in the salty land. ⁷ He laughs at the multitude of the city, neither does he hearken to the voice of the exactor of tribute. ⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches after every green thing. ⁹ Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee or abide by thy crib? ¹⁰ Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? Will he harrow the valleys after thee? ¹¹ Wilt thou trust him because his strength is great? Or wilt thou leave thy labour to him? ¹² Wilt thou trust him, that he will bring home thy seed and gather it into thy barn? ¹³ ¶ Didst thou give beautiful wings unto the peacock, or wings and feathers unto the ostrich? ¹⁴ Who leaves her eggs in the earth and warms them in dust ¹⁵ and forgets that the foot may crush them or that the wild beast may break them. ¹⁶ She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers, not fearing that her labour is in vain, ¹⁷ because God caused her to forget wisdom and did not give her understanding. ¹⁸ In her time she lifts up herself on high; she scorns the horse and his rider. ¹⁹ ¶ Hast thou given the horse strength? Hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? ²⁰ Canst thou make him leap as a grasshopper? The glory of his nostrils is formidable. ²¹ He paws at the earth and rejoices in his strength; he goes forth to meet the armed men. ²² He mocks fear and is not afraid; neither does he turn his face from the sword. ²³ The quiver rattles against him, the glittering spear and the shield. ²⁴ He swallows the ground with fierceness and rage; the sound of the shofar does not trouble him; ²⁵ for the blasts of the shofar fill him with courage; he smells the battle afar off, the thunder of the princes and the sound of the battle-cry. ²⁶ ¶ Does the hawk fly by thy industry and stretch her wings toward the south? ²⁷ Does the eagle mount up at thy command and make her nest on high? ²⁸ She dwells and abides on the rock upon the crag of the rock and the strong place. ²⁹ From there she seeks food, and her eyes behold afar off. ³⁰ Her young ones suck up the blood; and wherever the slain are, there she is.

² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? Let him that disputes with God answer this.

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore, I have denounced that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

³³ ¶ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments and his ways past finding out! ³⁴ For who has understood the intent of the Lord? or who has been his counsellor?

²⁹ ¶ And God gave Solomon exceedingly great wisdom and intelligence and magnanimity of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.

¹¹ For as the heavens are high above the earth so does he increase his mercy over those that fear him.

¹¹ Ask a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.

⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts more than your thoughts.

³⁹ nor height nor depth nor any creature shall be able to separate us from the charity of God, which is in Christ, Jesus our Lord.

⁷ that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold (which perishes, nevertheless it is tried with fire), might be found unto praise and glory and honour when Jesus, the Christ, is made manifest;

³ ¶ The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tries the hearts.

²⁵ and I will turn my hand upon thee and according to pureness purge away thy dross and take away all thy tin; ²⁶ and I will restore thy judges as at the first and thy counsellors as at the beginning; afterward thou shalt be called The city of righteousness, the faithful city. ²⁷ Zion shall be ransomed with judgment and her converts with righteousness.

¹⁸ Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross; they are all brass and tin and iron and lead in the midst of the furnace; they are become the dross of silver.

² But who may abide the time of his coming? and who shall stand when he appears? for he shall be like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap: ³ And he shall sit to refine and to purify the silver: for he shall purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

²⁰ But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of clay, and likewise some to honour, and some to dishonour. ²¹ If a man, therefore, purges himself from these things, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and profitable for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

³³ Their blood shall, therefore, return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever; but upon David and upon his seed and upon his house and upon his throne shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.

⁴⁶ Then the king commanded Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, who went out and fell upon him that he died. And the kingdom was confirmed in the hand of Solomon.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king’s wrath was pacified.

¹¹ that the king granted power to the Jews who were in all the cities to gather themselves together and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish any army of the people or province that would assault them, and even their little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey, ¹² upon the same day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar. ¹³ The copy of the writing which was to be given as law in each province was published unto all people and said that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves of their enemies. ¹⁴ So the posts rode upon mules, they went out on mules, being hastened and pressed on by the king’s commandment. And the law was given at Shushan, the palace. ¹⁵ ¶ And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white and with a great crown of gold and with a mantel of fine linen and purple; and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad. ¹⁶ The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honour. ¹⁷ And in each province and in each city wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a banquet and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews, for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.

⁷ He that works deceit shall not dwell within my house; he that tells lies shall not tarry in my sight. ⁸ I will early destroy all the wicked of the land, that I may cut off all the workers of iniquity from the city of the LORD.

¹² ¶ It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness, for the throne is to be established with righteousness.

⁸ ¶ A king that sits in the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.

²⁸ ¶ Mercy and truth preserve the king, and his throne is upheld by mercy.

¹⁴ ¶ The king that judges the poor with truth, his throne shall be established for ever.

⁷ The multitude of his dominion and the peace shall have no end upon the throne of David and upon his Kingdom, ordering it and confirming it in judgment and in righteousness from now on even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of the hosts will perform this.

⁵ And in mercy shall the throne be established; and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging and seeking judgment and hastening righteousness.

¹¹ ¶ Then Moses said unto God, Who am I that I should go unto Pharaoh and that I should bring forth the sons of Israel out of Egypt?

²⁰ And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, take no care for them, for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee and on all thy father’s house? ²¹ And Saul answered and said, Peradventure am I not of Jemini, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And is my family not the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why, therefore, dost thou speak so to me? ²² And Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the banquet chamber and made them sit at the head among those that were invited, which were about thirty persons.

¹⁷ And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?

¹⁸ And David said unto Saul, Who am I, and what is my life or my father’s family in Israel that I should be son-in-law to the king? ¹⁹ And it came to pass at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David that she was given unto Adriel, the Meholathite, to wife. ²⁰ But Michal, Saul’s other daughter, loved David, and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. ²¹ And Saul said, I will give her to him that she may be a snare to him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Therefore, Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son-in-law with the other one. ²² And Saul commanded his slaves, saying, Speak with David secretly and say, Behold, the king has delight in thee, and all his slaves love thee; now, therefore, be the king’s son-in-law. ²³ And Saul’s slaves spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, Does it seem to you a light thing to be a king’s son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man and lightly esteemed?

⁸ Now, therefore, so shalt thou say unto my slave David, Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people, over Israel; ⁹ and I have been with thee wherever thou didst walk and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. ¹⁰ Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their place and never again be removed; neither shall the sons of iniquity afflict them any more as before, ¹¹ since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. And I will cause thee to rest from all thy enemies. Likewise, the LORD makes thee to know that he will make thee a house. ¹² And when thy days are fulfilled and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹³ He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. ¹⁴ I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the sons of men; ¹⁵ but my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I took away from before thee. ¹⁶ And thy house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee; thy throne shall be established for ever. ¹⁷ According to all these words and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

¹ A Song of degrees of David. ¶ LORD, my heart has not become haughty, nor mine eyes lofty; neither have I walked in grandeur, nor in wonderful things above and beyond that which pertains to me.

¹⁹ ¶ It is better to humble your spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud.

²⁷ ¶ It is not good to eat much honey, so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

² ¶ Let another man praise thee and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

⁶ Then I said, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I do not know how to speak: for I am a child. ⁷ But the LORD said unto me, Do not say, I am a child; for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. ⁸ Do not be afraid of their faces; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. ⁹ Then the LORD put forth his hand and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. ¹⁰ See, I have placed thee in this day over Gentiles and over kingdoms, to root out, and to destroy, and to throw out, and to cast down, to build, and to plant.

¹² And Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and eat thy bread there, and prophesy there: ¹³ but do not prophesy any more in Bethel: for it is the king’s sanctuary, and the head of the kingdom. ¹⁴ Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, I am not a prophet, neither am I a prophet’s son, but I am a herdsman and a gatherer of sycamore fruit: ¹⁵ and the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

⁷ ¶ And observing how they chose the first seats at the table, he put forth a parable to those who were invited, saying unto them, ⁸ When thou art called to a wedding by anyone, do not sit down in the highest place, lest a more honourable man than thou be invited of him, ⁹ and he that called thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place, and thou begin with shame to have the lowest place. ¹⁰ But when thou art called, go and sit down in the lowest place that when he that invited thee comes, he may say unto thee, Friend, come up higher; then shalt thou have glory in the presence of those that sit at the table with thee. ¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for anyone that exalts himself shall be humbled, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

⁵ ¶ Likewise, young people, be subject to the elders in such a manner that you are all subject to one another. Be clothed with humility of will, for God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

¹ ¶ After these things I looked, and, behold, an open door in heaven, and the first voice which I heard, was like a trumpet that spoke with me, saying, Come up here, and I will show thee the things that need to be done after these.

¹⁴ And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise and sport before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. ¹⁵ Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, who pertained to Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, and twelve of the slaves of David. ¹⁶ And each one caught his fellow by the head and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together; therefore, that place was called Helkathhazzurim, {Heb. the inheritance of the strong}, which is in Gibeon.

²⁶ Then Abner called to Joab and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? Dost thou not know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long shall it be then before thou bid the people to return from following their brethren?

⁸ ¶ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look each other in the face. ⁹ And Jehoash, the king of Israel, sent to Amaziah, king of Judah, this reply, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife. And the wild beasts that were in Lebanon passed by and trode down the thistle. ¹⁰ Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thy heart has lifted thee up; glory in this, but tarry at home. Why should thou meddle in evil that thou should fall, even thou, and Judah with thee? ¹¹ But Amaziah would not hear. Therefore Jehoash, king of Israel, went up; and he and Amaziah, king of Judah, looked each other in the face at Bethshemesh, which is in Judah. ¹² But Judah fell before Israel, and they fled each man to their tents.

¹² ¶ There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

¹⁴ ¶ To release the waters (to speak rashly) is the beginning of contention; therefore, leave off strife before it gets started.

⁶ ¶ A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for strokes.

³³ Surely the churning of milk brings forth butter and the wringing of the nose brings forth blood; so the forcing of wrath brings forth strife.

³¹ The prophets prophesied falsely, and the priests bore rule by their hands; and my people love to have it so. What will ye do in the end thereof?

²⁵ Conciliate with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

³¹ Or what king going to make war against another king does not sit down first and consult whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand? ³² Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and desires conditions of peace.

¹³ A talebearer reveals secrets, but he that is of a faithful spirit conceals the matter.

¹⁹ ¶ He that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; therefore meddle not with him that flatters with his lips.

⁵ And whosoever shall receive one such little child in my name receives me. ⁶ But whosoever shall cause one of these little ones who believe in me to fall, it would be better for him that a millstone such as is turned by an ass be hanged about his neck and that he be sunk in the depth of the sea. ⁷ ¶ Woe unto the world because of offenses! For it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes! ⁸ Therefore if thy hand or thy foot cause thee to fall, cut them off and cast them from thee; it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into eternal fire. ⁹ And if thine eye causes thee to fall, pluck it out and cast it from thee; it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire. ¹⁰ Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in the heavens their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in the heavens. ¹¹ For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. ¹² What do you think? If a man had a hundred sheep and one of them went astray, would he not leave the ninety-nine and go into the mountains and seek that which is gone astray? ¹³ And if so be that he finds it, verily I say unto you, he rejoices more of that one than of the ninety-nine who did not go astray. ¹⁴ Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in the heavens that one of these little ones should perish. ¹⁵ ¶ Therefore if thy brother shall sin against thee, go and reprove him between thee and him alone; if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. ¹⁶ But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. ¹⁷ And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}; but if he neglects to hear the congregation, let him be unto thee as a worldly man and a publican.

³⁹ ¶ Turn away my reproach which I have feared, for thy judgments are good.

²³ ¶ A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!

²⁶ The lips of the one that gives a right answer shall be kissed.

¹⁰ The preacher sought to find willing words and upright writings, even words of truth.

⁴ ¶ The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the wise that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary; he wakes up early, early shall he awaken my ear, that I might hear, as the wise.

³¹ that this shall be no stumblingblock unto thee nor grief of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless or that my lord has avenged himself; but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid. ³² ¶ Then David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel who sent thee this day to meet me; ³³ and blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou who hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood and from avenging myself with my own hand. ³⁴ For in very deed as the LORD God of Israel lives, who has kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hastened and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that piss against the wall.

¹¹ Then all his brethren came unto him and all his sisters and all those that had been of his acquaintance before and ate bread with him in his house; and they condoled him and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him; each one also gave him an ewe, and an earring of gold.

⁵ ¶ Let the righteous smite me in mercy, and let him reprove me: and let not a flattering evil prince anoint my head, for my prayer shall ever be against his evil.

⁸ My son, hearken unto the chastening of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: ⁹ For they shall be an increase of grace unto thy head and protection about thy neck.

⁸ Chasten not a scorner lest he hate thee; chasten a wise man, and he will love thee.

⁵ ¶ The fool despises his father’s chastening, but he that regards reproof shall become prudent.

³¹ ¶ The ear that hears the reproof of life shall abide among the wise. ³² ¶ He that refuses chastening despises his own soul, but he that hears reproof has an understanding heart.

¹² ¶ The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made both of them.

⁵ ¶ Open rebuke is better than secret love. ⁶ Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

¹⁷ ¶ A bad messenger shall fall into evil: but a faithful ambassador is medicine.

²⁵ ¶ As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

⁶ ¶ He that gives responsibility to one who is not able to carry it out is like him that sends a message by the hand of a fool, and he shall drink the damage.

²⁵ Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and companion in labour and fellowsoldier, but your messenger and he that ministered to my needs. ²⁶ For he longed after you all and was full of heaviness, because ye had heard that he had been sick ²⁷ For indeed he was sick near unto death, but God had mercy on him and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. ²⁸ I sent him, therefore, the more carefully, that when ye see him again, ye may rejoice and that I may be the less sorrowful. ²⁹ Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness and esteem such ³⁰ because for the work of the Christ he was near unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.

¹¹ And Zedekiah, the son of Chenaanah, made himself horns of iron, and he said, Thus hath the LORD said, With these shalt thou push the Syrians until thou have consumed them.

⁶ ¶ Most men will proclaim each one his own mercy, but who can find a man of truth?

¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

¹⁰ Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are: extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. ¹² I fast two meals every sabbath; I give tithes of all that I possess. ¹³ And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God, reconcile me, a sinner. ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for anyone that exalts himself shall be humbled, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

¹³ For these false apostles are deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And it is no marvel, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. ¹⁵ Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers transform themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works. ¹⁶ ¶ I say again, Let no one think me a fool if otherwise, receive me as a fool, that I may yet glory a little. ¹⁷ That which I speak, I speak it not according to the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of glory. ¹⁸ Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also.

³¹ The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed for evermore, knows that I do not lie.

¹⁵ who forsaking the right way have erred, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness, ¹⁶ and was rebuked for his iniquity; a dumb animal accustomed to a yoke (upon which he was seated), speaking with man’s voice, hindered the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are wells without water, clouds that are brought by a whirlwind, to whom gross darkness is reserved for ever. ¹⁸ For speaking arrogant words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from those who converse in error, ¹⁹ promising them liberty, being they themselves the slaves of corruption: for he who is overcome by someone is subject to bondage by the one that overcame him.

¹² These are spots in your banquets of charity, feeding themselves without any fear whatsoever: clouds without water, carried to and fro of the winds; trees withered as in fall, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; ¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own abominations; erratic stars, to whom is reserved gross darkness eternally.

¹⁶ These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own desires; and their mouth speaks arrogant things, admiring persons to take advantage.

⁴ And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau: Thy slave Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban and stayed there until now; ⁵ and I have oxen and asses, flocks, and menslaves, and womenslaves; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight. ⁶ And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he comes to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. ⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed, and he divided the people that were with him, and the sheep and the cows and the camels, into two bands ⁸ and said, If Esau comes to the one company and smites it, then the other company which is left shall escape. ⁹ ¶ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said unto me, Return unto thy country and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee. ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which thou hast showed unto thy slave; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan and now I am become two bands. ¹¹ Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him lest he come and smite me and the mother with the children. ¹² And thou hast said, I will surely do thee good and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. ¹³ ¶ And he lodged there that same night and took of that which came to his hand as a present for Esau his brother: ¹⁴ two hundred she goats and twenty he goats, two hundred sheep and twenty rams, ¹⁵ thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals. ¹⁶ And he delivered them into the hand of his slaves, every drove by themselves and said unto his slaves, Pass before me and put a space between drove and drove. ¹⁷ And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau, my brother, meets thee and asks thee, saying, Whose art thou? And where goest thou? And for whom are these before thee? ¹⁸ Then thou shalt say, They are thy slave Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau; and, behold, also he is behind us. ¹⁹ And so commanded he the second and the third and all that followed those droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau when ye find him. ²⁰ And ye shall also say, Behold, thy slave Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will reconcile his wrath with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me. ²¹ So the present went over before him, and he lodged that night in the company.

¹⁴ And one of the servants told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to bless our master, and he railed on them.

²⁴ and fell at his feet and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be, and let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thy audience; and hear the words of thy handmaid. ²⁵ Let not my lord, I pray thee, take to heart this man of Belial, even Nabal, for as his name is, so is he; Nabal {Heb. fool} is his name, and folly is with him; but I, thy handmaid, did not see the servants of my lord whom thou didst send. ²⁶ Now, therefore, my lord, as the LORD lives and as thy soul lives, seeing the LORD has withheld thee from coming to shed blood and from avenging thyself with thy own hand, now let thy enemies and those that seek evil to my lord be as Nabal. ²⁷ And now this blessing which thy handmaid has brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the servants that follow my lord. ²⁸ I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thy handmaid, for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house because my lord fights the battles of the LORD, and evil has not been found in thee all thy days. ²⁹ Yet a man is risen to pursue thee and to seek thy soul, but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God, and he shall hurl forth the souls of thine enemies as out of the middle of a sling. ³⁰ And it shall come to pass when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning thee and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel, ³¹ that this shall be no stumblingblock unto thee nor grief of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless or that my lord has avenged himself; but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid. ³² ¶ Then David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel who sent thee this day to meet me; ³³ and blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou who hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood and from avenging myself with my own hand. ³⁴ For in very deed as the LORD God of Israel lives, who has kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hastened and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that piss against the wall. ³⁵ So David received of her hand that which she had brought him and said unto her, Go up in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice and have accepted thy person. ³⁶ ¶ And Abigail came to Nabal, and, behold, he held a banquet in his house like the banquet of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; therefore, she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, and he died. ³⁹ And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD that judged the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal and has kept his slave from evil, for the LORD has returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent word unto Abigail to take her to him to wife. ⁴⁰ And when the slaves of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke with her, saying, David sent us unto thee to take thee to him to wife. ⁴¹ And she arose and bowed herself on her face to the earth and said, Behold, let thy handmaid be a slave to wash the feet of the slaves of my lord. ⁴² And Abigail hastened and arose and rode upon an ass with five damsels of hers that went after her, and she went after the messengers of David and became his wife. ⁴³ David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel, and they were also both of them his wives. ⁴⁴ For Saul had given Michal, his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti, the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

¹ ¶ A soft answer turns away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger.

¹⁴ ¶ The wrath of the king is as a messenger of death, but the wise man will avoid it.

⁴ ¶ If the spirit of the ruler rises up against thee, do not leave thy place; for meekness pacifies great sins.

⁸ And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside from the way to see the carcase of the lion; and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion. ⁹ And he took of it in his hands and went along the way eating, and when he came to his father and mother, he also gave them some to eat, but he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion.

²⁵ And the army of all the land came to a wood, and there was honey upon the ground. ²⁶ And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped, but no man put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. ²⁷ But Jonathan had not heard when his father charged the people with the oath, therefore, he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes were enlightened.

⁸ Didst thou eat thy part? Thou shalt vomit it up and lose thy sweet words.

¹³ ¶ My son, eat of the honey, because it is good, and of the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste: ¹⁴ So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: if thou shalt find it, and in the end thy hope shall not be cut off.

¹⁵ He shall eat butter and honey that he may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.

²² and it shall come to pass for the abundance of milk that they shall give, he shall eat butter; for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.

³⁴ And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with excess and drunkenness and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, in which there is excess, but be filled with the Spirit,

² and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your slave’s house and tarry all night and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early and go on your ways. And they said, No, but we will abide in the street all night. ³ And he pressed upon them greatly, and they turned in unto him and entered into his house, and he made them a banquet and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

¹⁸ And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehem of Judah toward the side of Mount Ephraim, where I am from, and I went to Bethlehem of Judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD, and no one has received me in their house ¹⁹ even though we have straw and fodder for our asses, and there is bread and wine also for me and for thy handmaid and for the young man who is with thy slave; we have no lack of any thing. ²⁰ And the old man said, Peace be with thee; let all thy needs be upon me; only do not pass the night in the plaza. ²¹ So he brought him into his house and gave fodder unto the asses, and they washed their feet, and ate and drank.

²⁴ when I leave for Spain, I will come unto you; for I trust to see you on my journey and to be taken there by you, if first I may enjoy your company.

² Thy tongue devises wickedness like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

²¹ The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

⁴ My soul is among lions, and I lie even among those that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows and their tongue a sharp sword.

³ What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? ⁴ Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

³ They have sharpened their tongue like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.

¹⁸ ¶ There are those that speak like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise is medicine.

²⁸ ¶ Do not be a false witness against thy neighbour, and do not flatter with thy lips.

³ And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies, but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth for they proceed from evil to evil, and they did not recognize me, said the LORD.

⁸ Their tongue is as a sharp arrow; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth but in heart he lays in wait.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

²⁰ And Tilgathpilneser, king of Assyria, came unto him, and distressed him but did not strengthen him. ²¹ For even though Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the LORD and out of the house of the king and of the princes and gave it unto the king of Assyria, he did not help him.

¹⁴ ¶ He that is afflicted deserves mercy from his friend; but he has forsaken the fear of the Almighty. ¹⁵ My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream, ¹⁶ which was hidden by ice and covered by snow. ¹⁷ Which in the time of heat, they vanish; when they are heated, they disappear out of their place; ¹⁸ they turn aside out of the paths of their way; they go to nothing and perish. ¹⁹ The travelers of Tema looked; the traveling companies of Sheba waited for them. ²⁰ They were put to shame because of their hope; they came there and found them confused.

¹ ¶ Woe to the sons that leave, saith the LORD, to make counsel, but not of me; to cover themselves with a covering, and not by my spirit, adding sin unto sin! ² They leave to descend into Egypt and have not asked for a word from my mouth, to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh and to place their hope in the shadow of Egypt. ³ But the strength of Pharaoh shall become your shame, and the hope in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.

⁶ Behold, thou dost trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt upon which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it, so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.

⁶ And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. ⁷ When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst break and rend all their shoulder: and when they leaned upon thee, thou didst brake and make all their loins to come to nothing.

¹⁶ ¶ At my first answer no one stood with me, but all men forsook me: let it not be imputed unto them.

¹² And if the man is poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge. ¹³ Without fail thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goes down that he may sleep in his own clothing and bless thee, and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God. ¹⁴ ¶ Thou shalt not do violence unto a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he is of thy brethren or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates. ¹⁵ In his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor and with it sustains his life, lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee. ¹⁶ The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers; each one shall be put to death for his own sin. ¹⁷ Thou shalt not twist the rights of the stranger nor of the fatherless nor take a widow’s clothing for a pledge,

⁷ They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the floods of the mountains and embrace the rock for want of a covering. ⁹ They pluck the fatherless from the breast and take a pledge of the poor. ¹⁰ They cause the naked to go without clothing, and they take away the sheaves from the hungry.

³ when there, those that carried us away captive asked us for the words of the song; with our harps of joy hung upon the willows saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. ⁴ How shall we sing the song of the LORD in the land of strangers?

²⁶ ¶ As vinegar to the teeth and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those that send him.

⁴ a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother?

¹⁸ ¶ Then the king went to his palace and lay down without eating; neither were instruments of music brought before him, and his sleep fled from him.

¹⁵ Rejoice with those that rejoice and weep with those that weep.

¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you says unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; but ye do not give them those things which are needful for the body; what shall it profit them?

¹⁵ and the prayer of faith shall cause the one who is sick to be saved, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he shall be forgiven them.

⁴ If thou should encounter thine enemy’s ox or his ass astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. ⁵ If thou see the ass of him that hates thee lying under his burden, will thou forbear to help him? Thou shalt surely help him to raise it up.

²² And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them; would thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and return to their master.

¹⁵ And the men which were expressed by name rose up and took the captives, and, with the spoil, clothed all that were naked among them and arrayed them and shod them and gave them to eat and to drink and anointed them and carried all the feeble of them upon asses and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren; then they returned to Samaria.

¹⁷ ¶ Do not rejoice when thy enemy falls, and do not let thy heart be glad when he stumbles

⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless those that curse you, do good to those that hate you, and pray for those who speak evil about you, and persecute you;

³³ But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was; and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion ³⁴ and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn and took care of him. ³⁵ And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two denarius and gave them to the host and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. ³⁶ Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

²⁰ Therefore, if thine enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

¹² It may be that the LORD will look on my affliction and that the LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day.

¹³ And if the house is worthy, your peace shall come upon it; but if it is not worthy, your peace shall return to you.

¹⁸ Then those also who are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

²² Fair weather comes out of the north; with God is terrible majesty.

³ He that does not backbite with his tongue nor do evil to his neighbour nor take up a reproach against his neighbour.

⁵ Whosoever secretly slanders his neighbour, I will cut off; he that has a high look and a proud heart I will not suffer.

²⁰ ¶ Where there is no wood, the fire goes out, so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases.

³⁰ backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

²⁰ For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I desire and that I shall be found unto you such as ye desire not, lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, rumours, tumults,

¹³ ¶ A foolish son is a pain unto his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.

⁹ ¶ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

¹⁹ ¶ It is better to dwell in the wilderness than with a contentious and an angry woman.

¹⁵ ¶ A continual dripping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. ¹⁶ Whosoever hides her hides the wind, because the oil in his right hand cries out.

¹⁶ And she went and sat her down over against him a good way off as it were a bowshot; for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him and lifted up her voice and wept. ¹⁷ And God heard the voice of the lad, and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven and said unto her, What ails thee, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. ¹⁸ Arise, lift up the lad and hold him in thy hand, for I will make him a great nation. ¹⁹ And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the bottle with water and gave the lad drink.

² And the people chided with Moses and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? Why do ye tempt the LORD? ³ So the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses and said, Why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?

⁶ Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb, and thou shalt smite the rock, and water shall come out of it that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

¹⁸ ¶ And he was sore athirst and called on the LORD and said, Thou hast given this great salvation by the hand of thy slave; and now shall I die for thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised? ¹⁹ Then God broke a tooth that was in the jaw, and water came out there; and he drank, and recovered his spirit, and he lived. Therefore he called the name thereof Enhakkore, {Heb. the fountain of he who called}, which is in Lehi unto this day.

¹⁵ And David longed and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!

for the sons of Korah. ¶ As the hart pants after the water brooks, so does my soul pant after thee, O God. ² My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God?

¹ A Psalm of David,
when he was in the wilderness of Judah. ¶ O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee; my soul thirsts for thee; my flesh longs for thee in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water;

³⁰ ¶ The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and a good report makes the bones fat.

⁷ ¶ How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace, that brings good tidings of good, that publishes saving health, that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigns!

¹ ¶ Ho, every one that thirsts, come ye to the waters, and he that has no money; come ye, buy, and eat; come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

¹⁴ Will anyone leave the snow of the rock of the field that flows from Lebanon? or shall they forsake the singular, cold, flowing waters?

¹⁵ Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that brings good tidings, of him that publishes peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows; for Belial shall no longer pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.

¹⁰ But the angel said unto them, Fear not; for, behold, I bring you a gospel of great joy, which shall be to all the people. ¹¹ For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

³⁷ ¶ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If any man thirsts, let him come unto me and drink.

¹⁵ And how shall they preach if they have not been sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those that announce the gospel of peace, of those that announce the gospel of that which is good!

¹⁵ This is a faithful saying and worthy of acceptation by all, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first.

⁶ And he said unto me, It is done. I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is thirsty of the fountain of the water of life freely.

¹⁷ And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that hears say, Come. And let him that is thirsty come; and whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.

⁸ ¶ And Cain talked with Abel his brother, and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him.

¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king and said, And who is so faithful among all thy slaves as David, the king’s son-in-law, who goes at thy bidding and is honourable in thy house? ¹⁵ Did I begin to enquire of God for him today? But the slaves of the king would not put forth their hands to fall upon the priests of the LORD. ¹⁸ Then the king said to Doeg, Turn thou and fall upon the priests. And Doeg, the Edomite, turned and he fell upon the priests and slew on that day eighty-five men that wore a linen ephod.

²¹ And they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD. ²² Thus Joash, the king, did not remember the mercy which Jehoiada, his father, had done to him but slew his son; who said when he died, The LORD look upon it and require it.

² Son of man, raise up lamentations upon Pharaoh king of Egypt and say unto him, Thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou art as the whale in the seas, that dost dry up thy rivers, and trouble the waters with thy feet, and foul their streams.

¹⁸ Does it seem a small thing unto you that ye eat of the good pastures, but ye also tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and that in drinking of the deep waters, ye must also foul the residue with your feet? ¹⁹ And my sheep eat that which ye have trodden with your feet, and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.

³⁴ ¶ Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets and wise men and scribes, and some of them ye shall kill and crucify, and some of them ye shall scourge in your synagogues and persecute them from city to city, ³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. ³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that didst kill the prophets and stone those who are sent unto thee, how often I desired to gather thy children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

⁶⁹ ¶ Now Peter sat outside in the patio; and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. ⁷⁰ But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. ⁷¹ And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him and said unto those that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. ⁷² And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. ⁷³ And after a while those that stood by came unto him and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them, for thy speech makes thee manifest. ⁷⁴ Then he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately a cock crew.

⁵² Who of the prophets have your fathers not persecuted? and they have slain those who announced before the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have now been the betrayers and murderers,

¹⁵ who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and have persecuted us, and they do not please God and are contrary to all men,

⁶ And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus; and when I saw her, I marvelled with great surprise.

¹⁶ ¶ Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

⁴⁴ How can ye believe, who take glory one from another, and seek not the glory that comes only from God?

¹ ¶ Certainly it is not expedient for me to glory, but I will come to the visions and the revelations of the Lord.

¹¹ ¶ I have been a fool, glorying; ye have compelled me; for I ought to have been commended of you, for in nothing am I behind the grandiose apostles, though I am nothing.

³ Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in humility let each esteem others better than themselves,

³⁰ Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do I not know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion and unto the confusion of thy mother’s shame?

¹⁷ Now, therefore, know and consider what thou must do, for evil is determined against our master and against all his household, for he is such a son of Belial that no one can speak to him.

⁵ Also he strengthened himself and built up all the wall that was broken and caused the towers to be raised up, and another wall outside, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made swords and shields in abundance.

³ And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach, and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.

³² ¶ He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city.

²⁴ ¶ Do not meddle with an angry man, and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
