¹ ¶ The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spoke unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal, ² Surely I am more carnal than any man and have not the understanding of a man. ³ I neither learned wisdom nor have the knowledge of the holy. ⁴ Who has ascended up into heaven, or descended? who has gathered the wind in his fists? who has bound the waters in a garment? who has established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell? ⁵ Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto those that put their trust in him. ⁶ Do not add unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. ⁷ ¶ Two things have I required of thee; do not deny me them before I die: ⁸ Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread of my judgment: ⁹ Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and blaspheme the name of my God. ¹⁰ ¶ Do not accuse a slave in the presence of his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty. ¹¹ There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother. ¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. ¹³ There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. ¹⁴ There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their molars as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the destitute from among men. ¹⁵ ¶ The horseleach has two daughters, which are called, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough: ¹⁶ Sheol; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that never says, It is enough. ¹⁷ The eye that mocks at his father, and despises the teaching of his mother, the ravens shall pluck it out of the river, and the young eagles shall eat it. ¹⁸ ¶ There are three things which are hidden from me, yea, four which I know not: ¹⁹ The track of the eagle in the air; the track of the serpent upon the rock; the track of the ship in the midst of the sea; and the track of the man in the maid. ²⁰ Such is the track of an adulterous woman; she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no wickedness. ²¹ For three things the earth is disquieted, and the fourth it cannot bear: ²² For a slave when he reigns; and a fool when he is filled with bread; ²³ for a rejected woman when she is married; and a handmaid that is heir to her mistress. ²⁴ ¶ There are four things which are little upon the earth, but they are wiser than the wise men: ²⁵ The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer; ²⁶ the conies are but a feeble folk, yet they make their houses in the rocks; ²⁷ the locusts have no king, yet all of them go forth by bands; ²⁸ the spider takes hold with her hands and is in kings’ palaces. ²⁹ ¶ There are three things which have a magnificent walk; yea, the fourth is stately in going: ³⁰ The lion which is strongest among beasts and does not turn away for any; ³¹ the greyhound who is girded up of loins; a he goat also, and the king, against whom no one rises up. ³² If thou hast fallen, it is because thou hast lifted thyself up; and if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth. ³³ Surely the churning of milk brings forth butter and the wringing of the nose brings forth blood; so the forcing of wrath brings forth strife.

¹ ¶ The words of King Lemuel, the prophecy with which his mother taught him.

¹⁹ ¶ We have also the most sure word of the prophets, unto which ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts, ²⁰ understanding this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. ²¹ For the prophecy did not come in times past by the will of man, but the holy men of God spoke being inspired by the Holy Spirit.

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore, I have denounced that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. ⁴ Hear, now, and I will speak; I will ask of thee, and thou shalt cause me to know. ⁵ With my ears I had heard thee; but now my eyes see thee. ⁶ Therefore, I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.

¹⁰ For he sees that all the wise men die, likewise the fool and the ignorant perish and leave their wealth to others.

²² But I was ignorant and did not understand; I was as a beast before thee.

⁶ A carnal man does not know, neither does a fool understand this:

¹² and say, How have I hated chastening and my heart despised reproof

⁵ ¶ Then I said, Woe is me! for I am dead because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of the hosts.

¹⁴ Every man is carnal in his knowledge: let every founder be ashamed of his graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no spirit in them.

²⁵ For I would not, brethren, that ye ignore this mystery, that ye not be arrogant regarding yourselves: that blindness in part has happened in Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles are come in.

¹⁸ ¶ Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you seems to be wise in this age, let them become a fool that they may be wise.

² And if anyone thinks that they know anything, they know nothing yet as they ought to know.

⁵ And if any of you lacks wisdom, let them ask of God (who gives abundantly to all, and without reproach), and it shall be given them.

¹² But these, speaking evil of the things that they do not understand (as natural animals without reason, who are made to be taken and destroyed), shall utterly perish in their own corruption, ¹³ receiving the reward of their unrighteousness, as those that count it pleasure to live luxuriously every day. These are spots and blemishes, who eat together with you, while at the same time they revel in their deceit, ¹⁴ having their eyes full of adultery, and not knowing how to cease from sin, baiting unstable souls, having their heart exercised in covetous practices; cursed sons, ¹⁵ who forsaking the right way have erred, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness, ¹⁶ and was rebuked for his iniquity; a dumb animal accustomed to a yoke (upon which he was seated), speaking with man’s voice, hindered the madness of the prophet.

⁷ ¶ Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou come unto the perfection of the Almighty? ⁸ It is higher than the heavens; what canst thou do? It is deeper than Sheol; how canst thou know it? ⁹ The measure of it is longer than the earth and broader than the sea.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

³ And one cried out unto another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of the hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.

¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat and make their ears heavy and blind their eyes that they not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their heart, nor convert and there be healing for him.

¹¹ Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to leave our presence.

¹⁵ For thus has said the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is The Holy One; I dwell in the high place and in holiness and with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit to cause the spirit of the humble to live and to cause the heart of the contrite ones to live.

¹⁴ Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, I am not a prophet, neither am I a prophet’s son, but I am a herdsman and a gatherer of sycamore fruit: ¹⁵ and the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

²⁷ All things are delivered unto me of my Father, and no one has known the Son but the Father, neither has anyone known the Father except the Son and he unto whom the Son will reveal him.

¹⁷ And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in the heavens.

³ And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

³³ ¶ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments and his ways past finding out!

¹⁸ may be able to well comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height ¹⁹ and to know the charity of the Christ, which passes all knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.

⁷ ¶ And to the angel of the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} in Philadelphia write; These things, saith he that is Holy and True, he who has the key of David, who opens and no one shuts and shuts, and no one opens;

⁸ ¶ And the four animals had each of them six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within, and they did not cease day or night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.

²⁹ And Jacob asked him and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Why dost thou ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

¹³ And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the sons of Israel and say unto them, The God of your fathers has sent me unto you, and if they say to me, What is his name? What shall I say unto them? ¹⁴ And God answered unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM. And he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the sons of Israel: I AM (YHWH) has sent me unto you. ¹⁵ And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the sons of Israel: The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me unto you. This is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all ages.

³ and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD (YHWH) I was not known to them.

⁵ ¶ And the LORD descended in a cloud and was with him there proclaiming the name of I AM. ⁶ And as the LORD passed by before him, he proclaimed, I AM, I AM strong, merciful, and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in mercy and truth, ⁷ keeping mercy for thousands, letting go of iniquity and rebellion and sin; and by no means will I absolve the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons and upon the sons’ sons, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

⁵⁸ if thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book that thou may fear this glorious and fearful name; I AM thy God.

¹² It is not in heaven, that thou should say, Who shall go up for us to heaven and take it for us and recite it unto us, that we may fulfil it?

¹⁸ And the angel of the LORD replied, Why dost thou ask for my name? It is wonderful.

⁸ He binds up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.

⁴ ¶ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Cause me to know, if thou hast understanding. ⁵ Who ordered its dimensions, if thou knowest? Or who has stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Upon what are its foundations founded? Or who laid its corner stone; ⁷ when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? ⁹ When I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness a swaddling band for it, ¹⁰ and established my decree upon it, and set bars and doors, ¹¹ and said, Thou shalt come unto here, but no further; and there shall the pride of thy waves be stayed. ¹² ¶ Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days? Hast thou shown the dayspring its place, ¹³ that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is transformed as clay to the seal and then stands as a garment; ¹⁵ but the light of the wicked is taken from them, and the high arm is broken. ¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked searching out the deep? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? Or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? Declare if thou knowest it all. ¹⁹ Where is the way to the habitation of the light, and where is the place of the darkness? ²⁰ If thou shalt take it in its borders, and if thou should understand the paths to its house? ²¹ If thou didst know when thou wast to be born or if the number of thy days was to be great? ²² Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow, and hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, ²³ which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the light divided; from where is the east wind scattered upon the earth? ²⁵ ¶ Who has divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters or a way for the lightning of thunder, ²⁶ to cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man; ²⁷ to satisfy the desolate and waste ground and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth? ²⁸ Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of the dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice, and the hoary frost of heaven, who has begotten it? ³⁰ The waters harden as stone, and the face of the deep is frozen. ³¹ Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Canst thou bring forth the signs of the heavens in their season, or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? ³³ Dost thou know the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou use its power in the earth? ³⁴ Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? ³⁵ Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are? ³⁶ Who put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who gave intelligence to understanding? ³⁷ Who declared the heavens in wisdom? Or who can stay the bottles of heaven ³⁸ when the dust hardens and the clods cleave fast together? ³⁹ Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion or fill the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ when they crouch in their dens and abide in their lairs to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provided food for the raven; when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of food?

⁷ ¶ I will declare the decree; the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day I have begotten thee.

²⁷ All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn unto the LORD; and all the families of the Gentiles shall worship before thee.

² For he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.

¹⁸ Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive; thou hast received gifts for men, yea, for the rebellious also that the LORD God might dwell among them.

² who dost cover thyself with light as with a garment, who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain, ³ who dost establish his chambers between the waters, who makes the clouds his chariot, who walks upon the wings of the wind, ⁴ who makes his angels spirits, his ministers a flaming fire, ⁵ who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be moved by any age. ⁶ Thou didst cover it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. ⁷ At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away. ⁸ The mountains were exposed; they descended through the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them. ⁹ Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over, that they not turn again to cover the earth. ¹⁰ ¶ Thou art he who sends the springs into the valleys, which run among the mountains. ¹¹ They give drink to every beast of the field; the wild asses quench their thirst. ¹² Next to them the fowls of the heavens have their habitation; they sing among the leaves. ¹³ He waters the mountains from his chambers; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works. ¹⁴ He causes the hay to grow for the cattle and grass for the service of man, that he may bring forth bread out of the earth ¹⁵ and wine that makes glad the heart of man, making his face to shine with oil and bread which sustains man’s heart. ¹⁶ The trees of the LORD are satisfied; the cedars of Lebanon, which he has planted, ¹⁷ that the birds may make their nests there: the stork makes her house among the fir trees. ¹⁸ The high mountains are a refuge for the wild goats, and the rocks for the conies. ¹⁹ ¶ He appointed the moon for times and seasons; the sun knows his going down. ²⁰ Thou makest darkness, and it is night, wherein all the beasts of the forest move. ²¹ The young lions roar after their prey and seek their food from God. ²² The sun arises, they withdraw and lay themselves down in their dens. ²³ Man goes forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening. ²⁴ O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom thou hast made them all; the earth is full of thy riches. ²⁵ So is this great and wide sea, wherein are innumerable creeping things, both small and great beasts. ²⁶ There go the ships; there is that leviathan, whom thou didst make to play therein. ²⁷ These wait all upon thee, that thou may give them their food in due season. ²⁸ Thou givest unto them, they gather; thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good. ²⁹ Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled; thou takest away their spirit, they cease to exist and return to their dust. ³⁰ Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created; and thou renewest the face of the earth. ³¹ ¶ Let the glory of the LORD endure for ever; let the LORD rejoice in his works. ³² He looks on the earth, and it trembles: he touches the mountains, and they smoke. ³³ I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. ³⁴ My meditation of him shall be sweet; I will be glad in the LORD. ³⁵ Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. ¹⁴ Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel.

⁶ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government is placed upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called The Wonderful One, The Counsellor, The God, The Mighty One, The Eternal Father, The Prince of Peace.

¹² ¶ Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and prepared the heavens with his palm and with three fingers measured the dust of the earth and weighed the mountains in a balance and the hills with weights? ¹³ Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD or being his counsellor has taught him? ¹⁴ With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him? Who taught him in the path of judgment and taught him knowledge and showed unto him the way of intelligence? ¹⁵ Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he causes the isles to disappear as dust. ¹⁶ And all Lebanon is not sufficient for the fire, nor all the beasts thereof sufficient for the sacrifice. ¹⁷ All the Gentiles are as nothing before him, and they are counted to him as vanity and as less than nothing. ¹⁸ ¶ To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him? ¹⁹ The workman prepares the graven image, and the goldsmith spreads it over with gold and casts silver chains. ²⁰ He that is so impoverished that he has no oblation chooses a tree that will not rot; he seeks unto himself a cunning workman to prepare a graven image that shall not be moved. ²¹ Have ye not known? Have ye not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have ye not been taught since the land was founded? ²² He is seated upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; he stretches out the heavens as a curtain and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in: ²³ He brings the powerful to nothing; he makes the judges of the earth as if they had never been, ²⁴ As if they had never been planted, as if they had never been sown, as if their stock had never taken root in the earth; even blowing upon them, they wither, and the whirlwind takes them away as stubble. ²⁵ To whom then will ye liken me, or what shall ye compare me to? saith the Holy One. ²⁶ Lift up your eyes on high and behold who has created these things; he brings out his host by number; he calls them all by their names; none shall be lacking by the greatness of his might and by the strength of his power. ²⁷ ¶ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest thou, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God? ²⁸ Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard that the God of the age is the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth? He does not faint, nor is he weary; and there is no one that can attain to his intelligence. ²⁹ He gives power to the faint; and to those that have no might he increases strength. ³⁰ The young men faint and are weary; the children stumble and fall; ³¹ but those that wait for the LORD shall have new strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

⁸ He was taken from prison and from judgment; and who shall count his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the rebellion of my people he was smitten.

⁶ In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this shall be his name by which they shall call him, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

²¹ And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins. ²² Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, ²³ Behold, a virgin shall conceive and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God With Us.

²² All things are delivered to me of my Father, and no one knows who the Son is, but the Father, and who the Father is, but the Son and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

¹³ And no one has ascended up to the heaven but he that came down from the heaven, even the Son of man, who is in the heaven.

⁶ But thus saith the righteousness which is by faith, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven (that is, to bring the Christ down from above)?

⁸ Therefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive and gave gifts unto men. ⁹ (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? ¹⁰ He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all the heavens, that he might fulfill all things.)

¹² And his eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no one has known, but he himself.

¹ ¶ After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram; I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

³ But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory and the lifter up of my head.

⁶ The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

³⁰ As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is precise: a shield to all those that wait in him.

⁸ The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and shield unto us; the LORD will give grace and glory; he will not withhold good from those that walk uprightly.

² I will say of the LORD, He is my hope and my fortress: my God; in him will I secure myself.

⁹ ¶ O Israel, trust thou in the LORD; he is your help and your shield. ¹⁰ O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD; he is your help and your shield. ¹¹ Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD; he is your help and your shield.

¹⁴⁰ ¶ Thy word is very pure; therefore thy slave loves it.

² My mercy and my fortress; my high tower and my deliverer; my shield and he in whom I trust, who subdues my people under me.

¹² So the law is truly holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, modest, benevolent, full of mercy and of good fruits, not judgmental, unfeigned.

² Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish anything from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

³² Keep thyself, and do all that I command you; thou shalt not add to it nor diminish from it.

⁷ Are ye to speak iniquity for God? Are ye to speak deceitfully for him? ⁸ Are ye to bring honour unto him? Are ye to contend for God? ⁹ Would it be good for him to search you out? As one man mocks another, do ye so mock him?

¹⁵ And we are even found false witnesses of God because we have testified of God that he raised up the Christ, whom he did not raise up, if it so be that the dead do not rise.

¹⁸ For I testify unto everyone that hears the words of the prophecy of this book, If anyone shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book; ¹⁹ and if anyone shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life and out of the holy city and from the things which are written in this book.

⁵ ¶ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, Ask what you wish that I shall give thee. ⁶ And Solomon said, Thou hast shown unto thy slave David, my father, great mercy, according to the way he walked before thee in truth and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great mercy that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. ⁷ And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy slave king instead of David my father; and I am but a tender young man; I do not know how to go out or come in. ⁸ And thy slave is in the midst of thy people whom thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. ⁹ Give, therefore, thy slave a hearing heart to judge thy people that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this thy so great a people?

⁹ ¶ And when they had gone over, Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee before I am taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

² Thou hast given him his heart’s desire and hast not withheld the request of his lips. Selah.

⁴ One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the LORD and to enquire in his temple.

⁴² but only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

²⁰ And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go and will give me bread to eat and clothing to put on

¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has fed me all my life long unto this day, ¹⁶ the Angel who frees me from all evil, bless these young men, and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

¹⁵ And when the sons of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna (What is it?): for they did not know what it was. Then Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.

¹⁸ And when they did measure it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered each one according to his eating.

²¹ And they gathered it early in the morning, each one according to his eating; and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. ²² ¶ And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one; and all the princes of the congregation came and told Moses.

²⁹ See that the LORD has given you the sabbath; therefore, he gives you the bread of two days on the sixth day; abide ye every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

³⁵ Thus the sons of Israel ate manna forty years until they came to a land inhabited; they ate manna until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

³⁰ And the king caused him to be given his food continually, each thing in its time, all the days of his life.

¹² Neither have I separated myself from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

⁹ Surely the sons of Adam are vanity, and the sons of nobles are a lie; to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity. ¹⁰ Trust not in violence and become not vain in the taking of spoil; if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

²⁹ Remove from me the way of lying, and from thy law grant me mercy.

³⁷ ¶ Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity, and cause me to live in thy way.

⁶ ¶ The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of those that seek death.

⁸ ¶ He that sows iniquity shall reap iniquity, and the rod of his anger shall fail.

⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon riches which are not? For they shall certainly make themselves wings; they shall fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

² Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

¹⁸ ¶ Woe unto those that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope,

⁴ No one calls for righteousness, nor do any judge by the truth; they trust in vanity, and speak vanities; they conceive trouble and bring forth iniquity.

²¹ Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the guard and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street until all the bread in the city was spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

³⁴ And for his diet, there was a continual diet given him of the king of Babylon, every thing in its day for all the days of his life, until the day of his death.

¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread.

³³ But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

³ Give us day by day our daily bread.

⁸ And he said unto them, Draw out now and bear unto the butler. And they bore it.

¹⁵ and saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all the things that are therein,

⁶ ¶ But piety with contentment is great gain. ⁷ For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. ⁸ So that, sustenance and covering, let us be content with this.

² And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should hearken to his voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

⁷ Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain for the LORD will not hold guiltless anyone that takes his name in vain.

¹ ¶ And when a person commits sin, because they were called to testify under oath, and he was a witness that has seen or known of it, if he does not declare it, then he shall bear his iniquity.

¹⁰ And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it unto thee: great and goodly cities, which thou didst not build, ¹¹ and houses full of all good things, which thou didst not fill, and hewn out wells, which thou didst not dig, vineyards and olive trees, which thou didst not plant; when thou shalt have eaten and be full, ¹² then beware lest thou forget the LORD, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.

¹⁰ ¶ Thou shalt eat and be full and bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he has given thee. ¹¹ Keep thyself, that thou forget not the LORD thy God, to not fulfill his commandments and his rights and his statutes, which I command thee this day, ¹² lest peradventure when thou hast eaten and art full and hast built goodly houses and dwelt therein, ¹³ and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied and all that thou hast is multiplied, ¹⁴ then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery,

²⁰ For I shall bring them into the land which I swore unto their fathers, that flows with milk and honey, and they shall eat and fill themselves and wax fat; then they will turn unto other gods and serve them and provoke me and break my covenant.

¹⁵ ¶ But Jeshurun (the upright one) waxed fat and kicked; (thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou hast covered thyself) and forsook the God who made him and lightly esteemed the strong One of his saving health.

²⁷ And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us, for it has heard all the words of the LORD which he spoke unto us: it shall be, therefore, a witness unto you lest ye deny your God.

¹⁵ Now, therefore, do not let Hezekiah deceive you nor persuade you in this matter neither believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hands and out of the hands of my fathers; how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand? ¹⁶ And his slaves spoke yet more against the LORD God and against his slave Hezekiah. ¹⁷ In addition to this, he wrote letters that blasphemed the LORD God of Israel and spoke against him, saying, As the gods of the Gentiles of other lands could not deliver their people out of my hand, neither shall the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand.

²⁵ And they took strong cities and fertile land and inherited houses full of all goods, hewn cisterns, vineyards and oliveyards and many trees of good fruit; so they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in thy great goodness. ²⁶ Nevertheless, they were contentious and rebelled against thee and cast thy law behind their backs and slew thy prophets who testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great abominations.

²⁴ ¶ If I have made gold my hope or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; ²⁵ if I rejoiced because my wealth was being multiplied, and because my hand had gotten much; ²⁶ if I beheld the sun when it shone or the moon walking in beauty; ²⁷ and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth kissed my hand; ²⁸ this would also be a proven iniquity; for I should have denied the God that is sovereign.

³ For the rod of wickedness shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous because the righteous shall not put forth their hands unto iniquity.

³⁰ Men do not take a thief lightly, even if he steals to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; ³¹ and once he is taken, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

²⁴ ¶ Whosoever is partner with a thief hates his own soul; he hears cursing, and does not disclose it.

³¹ O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? Why do my people say, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

¹⁴ And thy renown went forth among the Gentiles for thy beauty; for it was perfect because of my beauty which I placed upon thee, said the Lord GOD. ¹⁵ ¶ But thou didst trust in thine own beauty and didst play the harlot because of thy renown and didst pour out thy fornications on every one that passed by; thou wert his.

⁴⁹ Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the afflicted and needy. ⁵⁰ And they filled themselves with arrogance and committed abomination before me, and when I saw it, I took them away.

¹⁷ By sentence of the watchmen is the matter resolved, and the case by the word of the holy ones to the intent that the living may know that the most High takes rule over the kingdom of men and gives it to whoever he will and sets up over it the man who is the lowest.

³⁰ the king spoke and said, Is this not the great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and for the glory of my greatness?

⁶ In their pastures, they filled themselves; they were satisfied, and their heart was exalted; for this reason they have forgotten me.

⁷² And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.

⁷⁴ Then he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately a cock crew.

²² And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of god, and not of man. ²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him because he did not give God the glory, and he expired eaten of worms.

⁹ Keep thyself that there not be a thought of Belial in thy heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother to give him nothing; for he shall cry unto the LORD against thee, and it shall be a sin unto thee.

¹⁵ ¶ Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the slave who is escaped from his master unto thee.

⁹ Then Doeg, the Edomite, who was set over the slaves of Saul, answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob to Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he enquired of the LORD for him and gave him provision and gave him the sword of Goliath, the Philistine.

⁹ ¶ And David said to Saul, Why hearest thou men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeks thy hurt?

¹⁹ Now, therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his slave. If the LORD has stirred thee up against me, let him smell the fragrance of an offering, but if they were the sons of men, let them be cursed before the LORD, for they have driven me out this day from joining myself to the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.

¹⁵ And David said to him, Wilt thou bring me down to this company? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company.

¹ ¶ And when David was a little past the top of the mountain, behold, Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, met him with a couple of asses saddled and upon them two hundred loaves of bread and one hundred bunches of raisins and one hundred of summer fruits and a bottle of wine. ² And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses are for the king’s household to ride on, and the bread and summer fruit for the servants to eat, and the wine that those that become weary in the wilderness may drink. ³ And the king said, And where is thy master’s son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abides at Jerusalem, for he said, Today shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father. ⁴ Then the king said to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba bowed down and said, Let me find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king.

²⁶ And he answered, My lord, O king, my slave deceived me, for thy slave said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride upon it and go to the king because thy slave is lame. ²⁷ And he has slandered thy slave unto my lord the king, but my lord the king is as an angel of God; do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

²² Thus Joash, the king, did not remember the mercy which Jehoiada, his father, had done to him but slew his son; who said when he died, The LORD look upon it and require it. ²³ And at the end of the year, the host of Syria came up against him, and they came to Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus. ²⁴ For even though the army of the Syrians had come with a small company of men, the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgments against Joash.

²⁶ ¶ He that withholds the grain, the people shall curse him, but blessing shall be upon the head of him that sells it.

²³ ¶ These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment. ²⁴ He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the peoples curse, nations shall abhor him:

²⁷ ¶ He that gives unto the poor shall never lack, but he that hides his eyes from the poor shall have many a curse.

²¹ Also do not take to heart all the words that are spoken lest thou hear thy slave speak evil of thee:

⁸ ¶ Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews. ⁹ They spoke and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever. ¹⁰ Thou, O king, hast made a law that every man upon hearing the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and every musical instrument, shall fall down and worship the statue of gold; ¹¹ and whoever does not fall down and worship that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. ¹² There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee; they do not worship thy gods, nor do they worship the statue of gold which thou hast raised up. ¹³ Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Then they brought these men before the king. ¹⁴ Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that ye do not honour my gods, nor worship the statue of gold which I have set up? ¹⁵ Now, are ye ready when ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and of every musical instrument to fall down and worship the statue which I made? For if ye do not worship, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands? ¹⁶ Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, We are not careful to answer thee in this matter. ¹⁷ Behold, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. ¹⁸ But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not worship thy god, nor honour the statue which thou hast raised up.

¹³ Then they answered and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the sons of the captivity of the Jews, has not regarded thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast confirmed, but makes his petition three times a day.

²⁴ And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and even before they reached the bottom of the den, the lions had the mastery of them, and broke all their bones in pieces.

⁴ Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? By his own master he stands or falls; and if he falls, he shall be made to stand, for God is powerful to make him stand.

¹⁷ In the same manner he that curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.

⁹ For any man that curses his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.

²⁰ and they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not hear our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard. ²¹ Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall die; so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear and fear.

¹⁶ Cursed is he that dishonours his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

²⁰ ¶ Whosoever curses his father or his mother, his fire shall be put out in obscure darkness.

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. ¹³ There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. ¹⁴ There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their molars as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the destitute from among men.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks at his father, and despises the teaching of his mother, the ravens shall pluck it out of the river, and the young eagles shall eat it.

⁷ ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁴ For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother, and, He that curses father or mother, let him die without recourse. ⁵ But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, Whatever I might have helped thee with is already my offering unto God, ⁶ and now has no need to honour his father or his mother with succour. Thus ye have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

¹⁰ For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother, and, Whosoever curses father or mother shall most definitely die. ¹¹ But ye say, It is enough if a man shall say to his father or mother, It is all Corban, (that is to say, my gift to God) whatever with which thou mightest be profited by me. ¹² And ye suffer him to do no more for his father or for his mother, ¹³ invalidating the word of God with your tradition, which ye have given; and many such like things do ye.

⁴ But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let those learn first to govern their house in piety and to recompense their parents, for this is honest and pleasing before God.

⁸ But if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

⁹ But ye are the chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, an acquired people, that ye should show forth the virtues of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

⁵ And the man Micah had a brothel of idolatry, {Heb. house of gods}, and made an ephod and teraphim {the vessels, clothing and instruments pertaining to idol worship} and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

¹³ Then Micah said, Now know I that the LORD will do me good, seeing I have a Levite as my priest.

¹³ And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD; I have performed the commandment of the LORD. ¹⁴ Then Samuel said, What means then this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

⁹ I am clean without rebellion, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

² For he flatters himself in his own eyes until his iniquity is found to be hateful.

² Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

⁷ ¶ Remove the sin in me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

² ¶ All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirits.

² ¶ Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD weighs the hearts.

¹⁶ ¶ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil;

⁵ who say, Stand by thyself, do not come near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burns all the day.

²² For though thou wash thee with nitre and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is sealed before me, saith the Lord GOD. ²³ How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? See thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways; ²⁴ a wild ass used to the wilderness that breaths according to the desire of her soul; from her lust, who shall stop her? All those that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

³⁵ Yet thou didst say, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will enter into judgment with thee because thou hast said, I did not sin.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness that thou may be saved. How long shalt thou entertain the thoughts of thy iniquity within thee?

²⁵ ¶ And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be cleansed from all your filthiness, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.

¹ ¶ In that time there shall be an open fountain for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem against sin and against uncleanness.

³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Ye are they who justify themselves before men, but God knows your hearts, for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are: extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

¹¹ And such were some of you, but now ye are washed, but now ye are sanctified, but now ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and in the Spirit of our God.

⁵ having the appearance of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

¹⁵ For unto the pure all things are pure, but unto those that are defiled and unfaithful, nothing is pure, but even their soul and conscience is defiled. ¹⁶ They profess that they know God, but in works they deny him, being abominable and rebellious and reprobate unto every good work.

⁵ not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

⁷ But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have communion with him in the midst of us, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son cleanses us from all sin. ⁸ ¶ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

⁵ and from Jesus, the Christ, who is the faithful witness and the first begotten of the dead and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins with his own blood

⁵ Whosoever secretly slanders his neighbour, I will cut off; he that has a high look and a proud heart I will not suffer.

¹ A Song of degrees of David. ¶ LORD, my heart has not become haughty, nor mine eyes lofty; neither have I walked in grandeur, nor in wonderful things above and beyond that which pertains to me.

¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

⁴ ¶ A high look and a proud heart, which is the fire of the wicked, is sin.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁶ ¶ Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and swaggering as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

² Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyre, Thus hath the Lord GOD said: Because thy heart has lifted thee up and thou hast said, I am God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas (yet thou art man, and not God); and thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God: ³ behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee: ⁴ with thy wisdom and with thine intelligence thou hast gotten thee riches and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures: ⁵ by the greatness of thy wisdom in thy trafficking thou hast multiplied thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:

⁹ Wilt thou yet say before him that slays thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and not God, in the hand of him that slays thee.

³⁶ And the king shall do according to his will, and he shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god and shall speak marvels against the God of gods and shall prosper until the indignation is accomplished, for the determination has been made. ³⁷ Neither shall he care for the God of his fathers, nor the love of women, nor care for any god, for he shall magnify himself above all.

⁴ Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him will become filled with pride, but the just in his faith shall live.

³ ¶ Let no one deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come except there come a falling away first and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, ⁴ opposing and exalting himself against all that is called God, or divinity, so that he as God sits in the temple of God, making himself appear to be God.

¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked and caused their teeth to release the prey.

⁷ Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God, for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the jawbone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.

⁸ He sits in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places he murders the innocent: his eyes are secretly set against the poor. ⁹ He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he catches the poor when he draws him into his net.

⁵ For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now I will arise, saith the LORD; I will set in safety the one whom the wicked one has ensnared.

⁴ ¶ The workers of iniquity certainly know this; those who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD.

² Thy tongue devises wickedness like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

⁴ My soul is among lions, and I lie even among those that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁶ ¶ Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth; break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD.

¹⁸ ¶ There are those that speak like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise is medicine.

¹⁶ ¶ He that oppresses the poor to increase his riches and who gives to the rich shall surely come to want.

³ ¶ A poor man that oppresses the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaves no food.

¹ ¶ So I returned and considered all the violence that is done under the sun and behold the tears of such as are oppressed, and they have no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but the oppressed had no comforter.

⁷ Certainly the greedy use evil measures: he devises wicked devices to ensnare the simple with lying words and to speak in judgment against the poor.

⁵ And behold the second beast, like unto a bear, which went off to one side, and it had three ribs between its teeth; and thus was said unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. ⁶ After this I beheld, and behold another, like a tiger, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; this beast also had four heads; and power was given to it. ⁷ After this I saw in the night visions, and behold the fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and exceedingly strong; and it had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces and trod down that which was left with its feet; and it was very different from all the beasts that had been before her; and it had ten horns.

⁷ desiring that there be dust of the earth upon the head of the poor, and to twist the way of the humble: and the man and his father have gone in unto the same maid, profaning my holy name:

¹ ¶ Hear this word, ye cows of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their masters, Bring, and let us drink.

⁴ ¶ Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, and cut off the poor of the land,

¹ ¶ Woe unto those that devise iniquity and fabricate evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they put it into effect because they have power in their hands. ² And they coveted fields and stole them, and houses and took them away; so they oppressed the man and his house, even the man and his heritage.

¹ ¶ And I said, Hear, I pray you, O princes of Jacob, and ye heads of the house of Israel. Did it not pertain to you to know that which is right? ² Who hate the good, and love the evil, who steal their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ and eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones and chop them in pieces as for the pot and as flesh within the caldron. ⁴ Then they shall cry unto the LORD, but he will not respond to them: he will even hide his face from them at that time because of their evil doings. ⁵ Thus hath the LORD said concerning the prophets that make my people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that does not give them something to eat, they even prepare war against him.

¹⁴ Thou didst strike through with his staffs the heads of his villages, who as a whirlwind attempted to scatter me; their pride was as to devour the poor secretly.

³ Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they do not leave a bone for tomorrow.

¹³ ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens in front of men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye those that are entering to go in.

¹ ¶ Come now, Oh ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are rotten, and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is corrupted with rust; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall completely eat your flesh, as fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped your fields (which you have kept back by fraud) cries out; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of the hosts.

⁸ And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.

¹⁶ These six things does the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

²¹ For three things the earth is disquieted, and the fourth it cannot bear:

²⁴ ¶ There are four things which are little upon the earth, but they are wiser than the wise men:

²⁹ ¶ There are three things which have a magnificent walk; yea, the fourth is stately in going:

¹¹ And these anxious dogs are insatiable, and even the shepherds did not know enough to understand: they all look to their own ways, each one for his gain, from his quarter. ¹² Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow shall be as this day, or much more excellent.

³ ¶ But come here, ye sons of the sorceress, generation of the adulterer and the whore.

⁴⁴ ¶ Behold, every one that makes proverbs shall make this proverb regarding thee, saying: As is the mother so is her daughter. ⁴⁵ Thou art thy mother’s daughter that discarded her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters who discarded their husbands and their children: your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite. ⁴⁶ And thine elder sister is Samaria with her daughters that dwell at thy left hand; and thy younger sister that dwells at thy right hand is Sodom with her daughters.

¹⁸ Their drink has become corrupted; they have committed whoredom continually; her princes love gifts, shamefully.

³ ¶ Thus hath the LORD said: For three transgressions of Damascus and for the fourth, I will not convert her because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron.

⁶ Thus hath the LORD said: For three transgressions of Gaza and for the fourth, I will not convert her because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:

⁹ Thus hath the LORD said: For three transgressions of Tyre and for the fourth, I will not convert her because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom and did not remember the brotherly covenant;

¹¹ Thus hath the LORD said: For three transgressions of Edom and for the fourth, I will not convert her because she pursued her brother with the sword and cast off all mercy, and with her anger she stole from him perpetually, and she kept her wrath for ever:

¹³ Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the sons of Ammon and for the fourth, I will not convert her because they have ripped off the mountains of Gilead that they might enlarge their border:

¹ ¶ Thus hath the LORD said: For three transgressions of Moab and for the fourth, I will not convert her because she burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime;

⁴ Thus hath the LORD said: For three transgressions of Judah and for the fourth, I will not convert her because they have despised the law of the LORD and have not kept his statutes, and their lies caused them to err after which their fathers have walked:

³ To complete the evil with their hands, the prince demands, and the judge judges for a reward; and the great man speaks the desires of his heart: and they confirm it.

³² Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

³⁹ They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said unto them, If ye were Abraham’s sons, ye would do the works of Abraham.

⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father ye desire to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.

¹⁸ For they that are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly and by smooth words and blessings deceive the hearts of the simple.

³ ¶ and in covetousness they shall make merchandise of you with feigned words, upon whom the condemnation from a long time ago does not delay, and their perdition does not sleep.

¹³ receiving the reward of their unrighteousness, as those that count it pleasure to live luxuriously every day. These are spots and blemishes, who eat together with you, while at the same time they revel in their deceit, ¹⁴ having their eyes full of adultery, and not knowing how to cease from sin, baiting unstable souls, having their heart exercised in covetous practices; cursed sons, ¹⁵ who forsaking the right way have erred, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness,

¹¹ Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward and perished in the gainsaying of Core. ¹² These are spots in your banquets of charity, feeding themselves without any fear whatsoever: clouds without water, carried to and fro of the winds; trees withered as in fall, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

¹ ¶ And when Rachel saw that she gave Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister and said unto Jacob, Give me sons, or else I will die.

²⁰ ¶ Sheol and hell are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

⁵ ¶ Even more than he who is given over to wine, the transposer, the proud man, shall not remain, who enlarges his desire as Sheol and is as death and cannot be satisfied, but gathered unto him all the Gentiles and heaps unto him all the peoples;

²¹ and he drank of the wine and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. ²² And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brethren outside. ²³ Then Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. ²⁴ ¶ And Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his younger son had done unto him. ²⁵ And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a slave of slaves shall he be unto his brethren. ²⁶ And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his slave. ²⁷ God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his slave.

¹⁸ ¶ When anyone has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother and when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them, ¹⁹ then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him and bring him out unto the elders of his city and unto the gate of his place;

²⁶ And thy carcase shall be food unto all fowls of the air and unto the beasts of the earth, and there shall be no one to frighten them away.

⁴⁴ And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the heaven and to the beasts of the field.

⁹ ¶ And Absalom met the slaves of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away. ¹⁰ And a certain man saw it and told Joab, saying, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.

¹⁴ Then Joab answered, I may not tarry thus with thee. And taking three darts in his hand, he thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. ¹⁵ And ten young men that bore Joab’s armour surrounded and smote Absalom and slew him. ¹⁶ Then Joab blew the shofar, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel, for Joab held back the people. ¹⁷ And they took Absalom and cast him into a great pit in the forest and laid a very great heap of stones upon him; and all Israel fled each one to his tent.

¹⁰ ¶ And Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, took sackcloth and spread it upon the rock from the beginning of harvest until water rained upon them out of heaven and allowed neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day nor the beasts of the field by night.

²² Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

¹¹ There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore, I have denounced that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

⁶ Thy knowledge is wonderful beyond my ability to comprehend; it is high, I cannot understand it.

¹⁶ ¶ If a man should entice a virgin that is not betrothed and lie with her, he shall surely endow her and take her to be his wife.

²⁷ Does the eagle mount up at thy command and make her nest on high?

³¹ but those that wait for the LORD shall have new strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

¹¹ ¶ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, ¹² Speak unto the sons of Israel and say unto them, If any man’s wife goes astray and betrays him, ¹³ and a man lies with her carnally, and it is hid from the eyes of her husband because she contaminated herself in secret, and there is no witness against her, neither was she taken in the act; ¹⁴ if a spirit of jealousy should come upon him, and he becomes jealous of his wife, and she is defiled; or if a spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he becomes jealous of his wife, and she is not defiled, ¹⁵ then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is a present of jealousy, a present of remembrance, which brings iniquity to memory. ¹⁶ And the priest shall bring her near and set her before the LORD. ¹⁷ Then the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take and put it into the water. ¹⁸ And the priest shall cause the woman to stand before the LORD and shall uncover the woman’s head and put the present of remembrance in her hands, which is the present of jealousy; and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings the curse. ¹⁹ And the priest shall charge her by an oath and say unto the woman, If no man has lain with thee, and if thou hast not gone astray from thy husband to uncleanness, thou shalt be clean from this bitter water that brings the curse. ²⁰ But if thou hast gone astray from thy husband and hast defiled thyself and some man has placed seed in thee other than thine husband, ²¹ (the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing) and the priest shall say unto the woman, Let the LORD make thee a curse and an oath among thy people when the LORD makes thy thigh to fail and thy belly to swell, ²² and this water that causes the curse shall go into thy bowels and cause thy belly to swell and thy thigh to fail. And the woman shall say, Amen, amen. ²³ And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water; ²⁴ and he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter into her as bitter. ²⁵ Then the priest shall take the present of jealousy out of the woman’s hand and shall wave the offering before the LORD and offer it before the altar. ²⁶ And the priest shall take a handful of the present, in memory of her, and incense it upon the altar and afterward shall cause the woman to drink the water. ²⁷ He shall give her, therefore, the water to drink, and it shall come to pass, that if she is defiled and has betrayed her husband, that the water that works the curse shall enter into her in bitterness, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall fail; and that woman shall be a curse among her people. ²⁸ But if the woman is not defiled, but is clean; then she shall be free and shall conceive seed. ²⁹ This is the law of jealousies when a woman goes astray, being under the power of her husband, and is defiled; ³⁰ or of the husband upon whom a spirit of jealousy comes, and he is jealous over his wife; he shall then present the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute in her all this law.

⁶ lest thou should ponder the path of life, her ways are unstable; thou shalt not know them.

¹³ So she caught him and kissed him and with an impudent face said unto him, ¹⁴ I had promised sacrifices of peace; today I have payed my vows. ¹⁵ Therefore I came forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. ¹⁶ I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. ¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning; let us solace ourselves with loves. ¹⁹ For the husband is not at home; he is gone a long journey: ²⁰ He has taken a bag of money with him and will come home at the appointed feast day. ²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield; with the flattering of her lips she persuaded him. ²² He went after her straightway, as an ox goes to the slaughter or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, ²³ until the arrow pierces through his liver. He is as a bird struggling in the snare and not knowing that it is against his own life.

³ Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and of a beautiful countenance, but the man was hard and evil in his doings, and he was of the lineage of Caleb.

¹⁰ And Nabal answered David’s slaves and said, Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many slaves nowadays that break from their masters. ¹¹ Shall I then take my bread and my water and my slaughtered meat that I have killed for my shearers and give it unto men that I do not know where they are from?

²⁵ Let not my lord, I pray thee, take to heart this man of Belial, even Nabal, for as his name is, so is he; Nabal {Heb. fool} is his name, and folly is with him; but I, thy handmaid, did not see the servants of my lord whom thou didst send.

³⁶ ¶ And Abigail came to Nabal, and, behold, he held a banquet in his house like the banquet of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; therefore, she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, and he died.

¹⁶ And so he brought him down, and behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and holding a feast because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines and out of the land of Judah.

¹⁰ ¶ Delight is not suitable for a fool; much less for a slave to have rule over princes.

⁷ I saw slaves upon horses, and princes walking as slaves upon the earth.

⁴ And I will give children to be their princes, and young fools shall rule over them. ⁵ And the people shall do violence, one against another, and each one against his neighbour; the child shall rise up against the ancient and the base against the honourable.

¹³ ¶ A foolish son is a pain unto his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.

⁹ ¶ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

¹⁹ ¶ It is better to dwell in the wilderness than with a contentious and an angry woman.

¹⁵ ¶ A continual dripping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

²¹ ¶ He that gives freely unto his slave from a child shall have him become his son in the end.

⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the heavens, and they shall show thee;

⁶ ¶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise, ⁷ Who having no guide, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ provides her food in the summer and gathers her food in the harvest.

⁵ And the coney because it chews the cud, but divides not the hoof: it is unclean unto you.

¹⁸ The high mountains are a refuge for the wild goats, and the rocks for the conies.

⁴ For if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring the locusts into thy borders, ⁵ and they shall cover the face of the earth that one will not be able to see the earth, and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remains unto you from the hail and shall eat every tree which produces fruit for you out of the field: ⁶ And they shall fill thy houses and the houses of all thy slaves and the houses of all the Egyptians, which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers’ fathers have seen since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day. And he turned himself and went out from Pharaoh.

¹³ And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. ¹⁴ And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and landed in all the borders of Egypt. Very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall there be such. ¹⁵ For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they ate all the grass of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left; and there did not remain any green thing in the trees or in the grass of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

³⁴ He spoke, and the locusts came and caterpillars without number,

⁴ That which the palmerworm has left the locust has eaten; and that which the locust has left the cankerworm has eaten; and that which the cankerworm has left the caterpillar has eaten.

⁶ For a people has come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the molars of a great lion. ⁷ He has laid my vine waste and barked my fig tree: he has made it clean bare and cast it away; its branches are made white.

⁷ They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war, and they shall march each one in his ways, and they shall not break his ranks. ⁸ No one shall crowd his companion; they shall walk each one in his path: and even falling upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. ⁹ They shall go through the city; they shall run upon the wall; they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. ¹⁰ The earth shall quake before him; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall go dark; and the stars shall withdraw their shining: ¹¹ and the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for many are his camps and strong, that execute his word; for the day of the LORD is great, and very terrible; and who can abide it?

²⁵ And I will restore to you the years that the caterpillar has eaten, the locust, and the cankerworm, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.

³ And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. ⁴ And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth neither any green thing neither any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God in their foreheads. ⁵ And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should torment them five months; and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when he strikes a man. ⁶ And in those days men shall seek death and shall not find it and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. ⁷ And the appearance of the locusts was like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. ⁸ And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. ⁹ And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. ¹⁰ And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails; and their power was to hurt men five months. ¹¹ And they had a king over them, who is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon meaning destroyer.

²⁴ Behold the people, who shall rise up as a great lion and lift up himself as a young lion; he shall not lie down until he eats of the prey and drinks the blood of the slain.

¹⁸ And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye would have never discovered my enigma.

¹⁴ ¶ The wrath of the king is as a messenger of death, but the wise man will avoid it.

² ¶ The fear of the king is as the roaring of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own soul.

⁵ Look upon me and be astonished and lay your hand upon your mouth.

⁴ Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay my hand over my mouth.

²⁸ Even a fool, when he is silent is counted wise, and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

¹² ¶ Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

³ Do not be hasty to rebel against him; do not persist in any evil thing, for he shall do whatsoever pleases him; ⁴ because the word of the king is his power and who may say unto him, What doest thou?

¹⁶ The Gentiles shall see and be ashamed at all thy mighty acts: they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their ears shall become deaf. ¹⁷ They shall lick the dust like a serpent; as the serpents of the earth, they shall tremble in their holes; they shall be filled with fear of the LORD our God and shall also fear thee.

¹⁹ ¶ Now we know that all that the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may submit themselves unto God.

¹⁸ ¶ A wrathful man stirs up strife, but he that is slow to anger appeases strife.

²⁸ The perverse man sows strife, and the tale bearer separates princes.

¹⁴ ¶ To release the waters (to speak rashly) is the beginning of contention; therefore, leave off strife before it gets started.

²¹ Charcoal for burning coals and wood for fire, and a contentious man to kindle strife.

²⁵ ¶ He that is of a proud heart stirs up strife, but he that puts his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.

²² ¶ The angry man stirs up strife, and the furious man abounds in transgression.
