⁷ All those that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

⁴ I also could speak as ye do. I wish your soul were in my soul’s stead, that I could heap up words against you and shake my head at you.

¹⁰ They have opened their mouth against me; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me.

⁹ And now I am their song, and I am their byword. ¹⁰ They abhor me, they distance themselves from me, and do not spare to spit in my face. ¹¹ Because God has loosed my cord and afflicted me, they have also gone out of control before my face.

¹⁸ Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

¹⁵ But in my adversity they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; yea, the smiters gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they tore me apart and did not cease: ¹⁶ With immature hypocritical mockers, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

¹⁴ Thou makest us a byword among the Gentiles, a shaking of the head among the people.

²⁵ I have become a reproach unto them; when they looked upon me they shook their heads.

²² This is the word which the LORD has spoken concerning him, Has he despised thee? Has he laughed thee to scorn O virgin daughter of Zion? Has he shaken his head behind thy back O daughter of Jerusalem? ²³ Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

³ He is despised and rejected among men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with weakness; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

⁴ Against whom do ye sport yourselves? Against whom do ye make a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? Are ye not rebellious sons, a lying seed of transgression,

²⁴ he said unto them, Give place, for the maid is not dead, but sleeps. And they laughed him to scorn.

⁶⁶ What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. ⁶⁷ Then they spit in his face and buffeted him, and others smote him with the staves, ⁶⁸ saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ; who is he that smote thee?

²⁹ And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before him and mocked him, saying, Receive joy, King of the Jews!

³⁹ And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, Thou that wouldst destroy the temple and build it in three days, save thyself. If thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross {Gr. stauros – stake}.

²⁹ Then Jesus, answering, said unto them, I will also ask of you one word, and respond unto me, and I will tell you with what faculty I do these things. ³⁰ The baptism of John, was it of heaven or of men? Respond unto me. ³¹ Then they thought inside themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did ye not believe him? ³² But if we shall say, Of men, we fear the people, for everyone judged regarding John that he truly was a prophet.

²⁰ And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him and put his own clothes on him and led him out to crucify him.

²⁹ And those that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads and saying, Ah, thou that would destroy the temple of God and build it in three days,

¹⁴ And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things, and they derided him.

¹¹ And Herod with his court despised him and mocked him and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe and sent him again to Pilate.

³⁵ And the people stood beholding. And the princes also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ, the chosen of God. ³⁶ And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar ³⁷ and saying, If thou art the king of the Jews, save thyself. ³⁸ And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek and Latin and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. ³⁹ And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou art the Christ, save thyself and us.
