¹ ¶ Let every soul submit itself to the higher powers. For there is no power but of God, and the powers that be are ordained of God. ² Whosoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God, and those that resist shall receive condemnation to themselves. ³ For the magistrates are not a terror unto those who do good, but to the doer of evil. Is thy desire therefore to not fear the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same; ⁴ for he is a minister of God for thy good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain, for he is a minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil. ⁵ Therefore it is necessary that ye be subject, not only for punishment, but also for conscience sake. ⁶ For this cause ye also pay them tribute, for they are God’s ministers, attending continually to this very thing. ⁷ ¶ Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. ⁸ Owe no one anything, but love one unto another; for he that loves his neighbour has fulfilled the law. ⁹ For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not murder, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet, and if there is any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ¹⁰ Charity works no evil to a neighbour; therefore, charity is the fulfillment of the law. ¹¹ ¶ And this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awaken ourselves out of sleep, for now is our saving health nearer than when we believed. ¹² The night is past, and the day is come; let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us clothe ourselves with the weapons of light. ¹³ Let us walk honestly, as in the day, not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. ¹⁴ But be clothed with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not listen to the flesh, to fulfil its desires.

¹² And the man that will act presumptuously and will not hearken unto the priest that stands to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die; and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.

⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill to set them among princes and to make them inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and he has set the world upon them.

⁴ However, the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever, for he has chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel; ⁵ and of all my sons (for the LORD has given me many sons) he has chosen Solomon, my son, to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.

¹¹ God has spoken once; twice have I heard this that power belongs unto God.

¹⁵ By me the kings reign, and the princes decree justice. ¹⁶ By me the princes rule, and all of the governors judge the earth.

⁵ I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the face of the earth, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom was upright in my eyes. ⁶ And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my slave; and even the beasts of the field I have given him that they might serve him. ⁷ And all the Gentiles shall serve him and his son and his son’s son, until the time of his own land shall come also; and many nations and great kings shall serve him. ⁸ And it shall come to pass, that the people and the kingdom which will not serve Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that people I will visit, saith the LORD, with the sword and with the famine and with the pestilence, until I have finished placing all of them under his hand.

²¹ and it is he that changes the times and the opportunities; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom unto the wise and knowledge unto those that know understanding:

³² and they drive thee from among men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; and they shall feed thee as the oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee until thou know that the most High takes rule in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomever he will.

¹⁸ O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father the kingdom and the greatness and the glory and the magnificence: ¹⁹ and by the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him; whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he humbled. ²⁰ But when his heart made itself arrogant, and his spirit hardened itself in pride, he was deposed from the throne of his kingdom, and they took his glory from him: ²¹ and he was driven from among the sons of men; and his heart was put with the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they made him eat grass like an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven until he understood that the most high God takes rule of the kingdom of men and that he appoints over it whomever he will. ²² And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this; ²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy princes, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; furthermore, thou hast praised gods of silver and of gold, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand is thy soul and whose are all thy ways, thou hast never honoured.

¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

¹¹ Jesus answered, Thou could have no power at all against me, unless it were given thee from above; therefore he that delivered me unto thee has the greater sin.

²¹ ¶ submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

¹ ¶ Admonish them to be subject to dominion and power, and to persuade those who have authority, that they be quick unto every good work.

¹³ ¶ Therefore, be subject to every human ordinance that is of the Lord, whether it be to a king or to a superior, ¹⁴ and unto governors as unto those that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those that do well. ¹⁵ For this is the will of God, that in well doing ye may silence the ignorance of vain men, ¹⁶ as being free, yet not using your liberty to cover maliciousness, but as slaves of God. ¹⁷ Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

¹⁰ ¶ and chiefly those that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise dominion; presumptuous, arrogant, they are not afraid to speak evil of the higher powers; ¹¹ whereas even the angels, who are greater in power and might, bring no curse of judgment against them before the Lord.

⁸ ¶ In the same manner these deceived dreamers, defile their flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of higher powers.

⁵ and from Jesus, the Christ, who is the faithful witness and the first begotten of the dead and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins with his own blood

¹⁴ ¶ These shall make war against the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them; for he is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those that are with him are called and chosen and faithful.

¹⁶ And he has on his garment and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

² That they seek me daily and want to know my ways, as people that do righteousness and have not forsaken the rights of their God: they ask me of the rights of righteousness and desire to approach God.

⁸ but, The LORD lives, who caused the seed of the house of Israel to come up and out of the land of the north wind, and from all the lands where I had driven them, and they shall dwell in their own land. ⁹ ¶ My heart is broken within me because of the prophets, all my bones shake; I was like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine has overcome, before the LORD, and before the words of his holiness. ¹⁰ For the land is full of adulterers; for because of the oath the land is deserted; the booths of the wilderness are dried up, and their course was evil, and their force was not right. ¹¹ For both prophet and priest are feigned; even in my house I have found their wickedness, said the LORD. ¹² Therefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness; they shall be driven on and fall therein; for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation, saith the LORD. ¹³ And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal and caused my people Israel to err. ¹⁴ I have also seen a horrible thing in the prophets of Jerusalem: they committed adultery and walked by lies; they strengthened also the hands of evildoers, that no none is converted from his malice; they are all of them unto me as Sodom and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah. ¹⁵ Therefore, thus hath the LORD of the hosts said against those prophets: Behold, I will cause them to eat wormwood and make them drink the waters of gall, for from the prophets of Jerusalem is hypocrisy gone forth upon all the land. ¹⁶ Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. ¹⁷ They say boldly unto those that stir me to anger, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto anyone that walks after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.

¹⁴ so that none of the remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to dwell there, shall escape or remain alive to return into the land of Judah, unto which they have a desire to return to dwell there; for none shall return but some fugitives. ¹⁵ ¶ Then all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying, ¹⁶ As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee. ¹⁷ But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goes forth out of our own mouth to burn incense unto the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings unto her as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

¹³ ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens in front of men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye those that are entering to go in.

⁴⁰ which devour widows’ houses and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater judgment.

⁴⁷ who devour the houses of the widows and for a pretext make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

⁵ Therefore it is necessary that ye be subject, not only for punishment, but also for conscience sake.

¹ ¶ My brethren, make not unto yourselves many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

¹³ ¶ Therefore, be subject to every human ordinance that is of the Lord, whether it be to a king or to a superior,

¹ ¶ If there is a controversy between persons and they come unto judgment and they are judged, then they shall justify the righteous and condemn the wicked.

³⁵ ¶ The king’s favour is toward the wise slave, but his wrath is against him that causes shame.

² ¶ The fear of the king is as the roaring of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own soul.

⁴ ¶ If the spirit of the ruler rises up against thee, do not leave thy place; for meekness pacifies great sins. ⁵ There is another evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceeds from the ruler: ⁶ Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich are seated in a low place.

¹⁵ Shalt thou reign, because thou dost enclose thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink and do judgment and righteousness, and then it was well with him? ¹⁶ He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him. Is this not to know me? said the LORD. ¹⁷ But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness and for to shed innocent blood and for oppression and for violence, to do it. ¹⁸ Therefore thus hath the LORD said concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! and Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!

¹³ ¶ Therefore, be subject to every human ordinance that is of the Lord, whether it be to a king or to a superior, ¹⁴ and unto governors as unto those that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those that do well.

¹³ And who is he that can harm you, if ye are followers of that which is good? ¹⁴ But also if ye suffer anything for righteousness’ sake, blessed are ye; therefore, be not afraid of their terror neither be troubled,

¹⁹ The kinsman avenger {Heb. redeemer} of blood shall slay the murderer; when he meets him, he shall slay him. ²⁰ But if he thrusts him out of hatred or hurls at him by laying in wait, so that he dies ²¹ or out of enmity smites him with his hand so that he dies, he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer; the kinsman avenger {Heb. redeemer} of blood shall slay the murderer when he meets him. ²² But if he thrusts him suddenly without enmity, or has cast upon him any thing without laying in wait, ²³ or with any stone, with which a man may die, seeing him not and casts it upon him that he dies, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm, ²⁴ then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the kinsman avenger {Heb. redeemer} of blood according to these laws. ²⁵ And the congregation shall deliver the manslayer out of the hand of the kinsman avenger {Heb. redeemer} of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, where he has fled, and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil. ²⁶ But if the manslayer shall at any time come outside the border of the city of his refuge where he has fled, ²⁷ and the kinsman avenger {Heb. redeemer} of blood finds him outside the borders of the city of his refuge, and the kinsman avenger {Heb. redeemer} of blood slays the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of his blood.

⁵ And when the avenger {Heb. redeemer} of blood pursues after him, they shall not deliver the manslayer up into his hand because he smote his neighbour by error, nor did he have enmity with him before.

⁹ These were the cities appointed for all the sons of Israel and for the stranger that sojourns among them that anyone who kills any person by error might flee there and not die by the hand of the avenger {Heb. redeemer} of blood until he stands before the congregation.

⁹ Blessed be the LORD thy God, who delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel; because the LORD has always loved Israel, therefore he made thee king, to do justice and righteousness.

⁶ and said to the judges, Take heed what ye do, for ye do not judge for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the word of judgment.

² How long will ye judge unjustly and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah. ³ Do right concerning the poor and fatherless; do justice to the poor and destitute. ⁴ Deliver the poor and destitute; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

¹⁴ ¶ The wrath of the king is as a messenger of death, but the wise man will avoid it.

⁸ ¶ A king that sits in the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.

²⁶ ¶ A wise king scatters the wicked and brings the wheel over them.

²³ ¶ These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment. ²⁴ He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the peoples curse, nations shall abhor him:

⁸ Open thy mouth for those who cannot speak in the judgment of all the sons of death. ⁹ Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and destitute.

² I counsel thee to keep the king’s commandment and the word of the covenant that thou hast made with God. ³ Do not be hasty to rebel against him; do not persist in any evil thing, for he shall do whatsoever pleases him; ⁴ because the word of the king is his power and who may say unto him, What doest thou? ⁵ Whosoever keeps the commandment shall experience no evil thing, and a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment.

¹⁷ learn to do good; seek judgment; restore unto the oppressed; hear the fatherless in right judgment; protect the widow.

²⁸ They are become fat; they shine; yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they did not judge the cause, the cause of the fatherless; with all this they made themselves prosperous; and they did not judge the cause of the poor.

²⁷ Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to follow their own greed.

¹⁴ And I will place my vengeance in Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, said the Lord GOD.

¹ ¶ And I said, Hear, I pray you, O princes of Jacob, and ye heads of the house of Israel. Did it not pertain to you to know that which is right? ² Who hate the good, and love the evil, who steal their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ and eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones and chop them in pieces as for the pot and as flesh within the caldron. ⁴ Then they shall cry unto the LORD, but he will not respond to them: he will even hide his face from them at that time because of their evil doings.

⁹ Now hear this, ye heads of the house of Jacob and captains of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment and pervert all equity;

¹⁹ Not defending yourselves, dearly beloved; but rather give place unto the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

⁶ For this cause ye also pay them tribute, for they are God’s ministers, attending continually to this very thing.

⁶ that no one oppress and defraud his brother in any matter because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

⁵ And it came to pass afterward that David’s heart smote him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt. ⁶ And he said unto his men, The LORD keep me from doing this thing unto my master, the LORD’s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.

² I counsel thee to keep the king’s commandment and the word of the covenant that thou hast made with God.

¹⁶ And for this reason do I exercise myself to have always a conscience void of offense toward God and toward men.

¹ ¶ Admonish them to be subject to dominion and power, and to persuade those who have authority, that they be quick unto every good work. ² That they speak evil of no one, that they not be contentious, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men.

¹⁸ ¶ Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience in all things desiring to conduct ourselves well.

¹³ ¶ Therefore, be subject to every human ordinance that is of the Lord, whether it be to a king or to a superior, ¹⁴ and unto governors as unto those that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those that do well. ¹⁵ For this is the will of God, that in well doing ye may silence the ignorance of vain men,

¹⁹ For this is due to grace, if a man for conscience toward God endures grief, suffering wrongfully.

¹⁶ ¶ having a good conscience, so in that which they murmur against you as of evildoers, those that blaspheme your good conversation in the Christ may be confused.

¹³ ¶ And it came to pass another day that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood before Moses from the morning unto the evening. ¹⁴ And when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this that thou doest to the people? Why sittest thou thyself alone and all the people stand before thee from morning unto evening? ¹⁵ And Moses said unto his father-in-law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God. ¹⁶ When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I declare unto them the statutes of God and his laws. ¹⁷ Then Moses’ father-in-law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. ¹⁸ Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou and this people that is with thee; for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. ¹⁹ Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people before God that thou may submit the causes unto God. ²⁰ And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws and shalt show them the way in which they must walk and the work that they must do. ²¹ Moreover thou shalt consider out of all the people men of virtue, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness, and place princes over them, of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. ²² And let them judge the people at all seasons; and it shall be that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge, so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee. ²³ If thou shalt do this thing and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace. ²⁴ So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. ²⁵ And Moses chose men of virtue out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, princes over thousands, over hundreds, over fifties, and over tens. ²⁶ And they judged the people at all seasons; the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. ²⁷ And Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went to his own land.

⁹ ¶ And I spoke unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone; ¹⁰ the LORD your God has multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. ¹¹ Let the LORD God of your fathers add upon you a thousand times so many more as ye are and bless you, as he has promised! ¹² How can I myself alone bear your troubles and your burdens and your strife? ¹³ Give me from among you, of your tribes, wise and understanding and expert men, and I will make them the head over you. ¹⁴ And ye answered me and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do. ¹⁵ So I took the principals of your tribes, wise men and experts, and made them princes over you, princes over thousands and princes over hundreds and princes over fifties and princes over tens and officers among your tribes. ¹⁶ And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren and judge righteously between every man and his brother and the stranger that is with him. ¹⁷ Ye shall not respect persons in judgment, but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s; and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

¹⁶ And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpeh and judged Israel in all those places. ¹⁷ Then he would return to Ramah, for there was his house, and there he judged Israel, and there he built an altar unto the LORD.

⁵ And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succour Hadadezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians twenty-two thousand men.

¹⁴ So David reigned over all Israel and executed judgment and righteousness among all his people.

¹³ Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city is rebuilt, and the walls founded, they will not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so the revenue of the kings shall be reduced.

²⁰ and that there have been mighty kings in Jerusalem, who have ruled over all that is beyond the river, and that toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

⁸ And by me is given the commandment regarding what ye shall do with the elders of these Jews, to build this house of God: that of the king’s goods, of the tribute from the other side of the river, the expenses be given unto these men, that they not cease.

⁴ And there were some that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.

⁷ ¶ When I went out to the gate to judgment, when I had my seat prepared in the plaza! ⁸ The young men would see me and hide themselves, and the aged would arise and stand. ⁹ The princes would refrain from talking and lay their hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ the voice of the principals would not be noticed, and their tongue would cleave to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ When the ears that heard me, called me blessed; and when the eyes that saw me, gave witness to me: ¹² because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him. ¹³ The blessing of the one that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me as a robe; and my diadem was judgment. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy; and the cause which I did not know I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked and caused their teeth to release the prey.

²⁴ ¶ And when they were come to Capernaum, those that received the two drachmas came to Peter and said, Does not your master pay the two drachmas? ²⁵ He said, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus spoke unto him first, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own sons or of strangers? ²⁶ Peter said unto him, Of strangers. Jesus said unto him, Then the sons are free. ²⁷ Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea and cast a hook and take up the first fish that comes up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a stater, a coin worth four drachmas; take that, and give it unto them for me and thee.

¹⁷ Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar or not? ¹⁸ But Jesus perceived their wickedness and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? ¹⁹ Show me the coin of the tribute. And they presented unto him a denarius. ²⁰ And he said unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? ²¹ They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.

¹⁴ And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art a man of truth who regards no man; for thou dost not look upon the appearance of men, but dost with truth teach the way of God; is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not? ¹⁵ Shall we give or shall we not give? Then he, understanding their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me the coin that I may see it. ¹⁶ And they brought it. And he said unto them, Of whom is this image and inscription? And they said unto him, Of Caesar. ¹⁷ And Jesus, answering, said unto them, Render that which is of Caesar unto Caesar, and that which is of God unto God. And they marvelled at this.

²¹ And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither dost thou accept the person of any, but teachest the way of God with truth; ²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar or no? ²³ But he, perceiving their craftiness, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? ²⁴ Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have? They answered and said, Caesar’s. ²⁵ And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things which are God’s. ²⁶ And they could not take hold of his words before the people, and they marvelled at his answer and were silent.

² And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

⁸ he that exhorts, in exhortation; he that gives, let him do it in simplicity; he that presides, in earnest care; he that shows mercy, in cheerfulness.

¹² ¶ Honour thy father and thy mother that thy days may be lengthened upon the land which the LORD thy God gives thee.

³ Ye shall fear, every man his mother and his father and keep my sabbaths. I AM your God.

³² Thou shalt rise up before grey hair and honour the face of the elder and fear thy God. I am the LORD.

¹⁸ So Samuel called unto the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.

²¹ ¶ My son, fear the LORD and the king, and do not meddle with those that are given to change,

²⁵ He said, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus spoke unto him first, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own sons or of strangers?

²¹ They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.

¹⁷ And Jesus, answering, said unto them, Render that which is of Caesar unto Caesar, and that which is of God unto God. And they marvelled at this.

²⁵ And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things which are God’s.

³³ Nevertheless, let each one of you do likewise, let each one so love his wife even as himself, and let the wife see that she reverences her husband.

² Honour thy father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), ³ that it may be well with thee, and thou may live long on the earth.

⁵ Slaves, be obedient to those that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in simplicity of your heart as unto the Christ,

¹³ And reject also the idle, who have learned to wander about from house to house, and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

¹⁷ ¶ Let the elders that govern well be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in the word and doctrine.

¹ ¶ Let all that are under the yoke of slavery count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine not be blasphemed.

¹⁷ Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. ¹⁸ Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and humane, but also to the unjust.

⁷ Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them wisely, giving honour unto the woman, as unto a more fragile vessel and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers not be hindered.

¹⁴ ¶ Thou shalt not do violence unto a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he is of thy brethren or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates. ¹⁵ In his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor and with it sustains his life, lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.

²⁷ ¶ Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. ²⁸ Do not say unto thy neighbour, Go and come again and tomorrow I will give when thou hast it by thee.

¹² ¶ Therefore, all things whatsoever ye desire that men should do unto you, so also shall ye do unto them, for this is the law and the prophets.

³⁹ And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ⁴⁰ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

³⁴ A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

⁷ ¶ Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

¹⁰ Charity works no evil to a neighbour; therefore, charity is the fulfillment of the law.

¹⁴ For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

¹⁴ And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfection.

⁵ ¶ Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart and of a good conscience and of faith unfeigned:

⁸ ¶ If ye truly fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well;

¹² ¶ Honour thy father and thy mother that thy days may be lengthened upon the land which the LORD thy God gives thee. ¹³ Thou shalt not murder. ¹⁴ Thou shalt not commit adultery. ¹⁵ Thou shalt not steal. ¹⁶ Thou shalt not give false testimony against thy neighbour. ¹⁷ Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manslave, nor his maidslave, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

¹⁸ Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the sons of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. I am the LORD.

³⁴ But the stranger that dwells with you shall be as the natural of yourselves, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. I AM your God.

¹⁶ Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God has commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God gives thee. ¹⁷ Thou shalt not murder. ¹⁸ Thou shalt not commit adultery. ¹⁹ Thou shalt not steal. ²⁰ Thou shalt not give false testimony against thy neighbour. ²¹ Thou shalt not desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field or his manslave or his maidslave, his ox or his ass or any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

¹⁸ He said unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt not murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, ¹⁹ Honour thy father and thy mother, and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

³⁹ And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

¹⁹ Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

³¹ And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these.

²⁷ And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy understanding, and thy neighbour as thyself.

²⁰ Thou knowest the commandments, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not murder, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

⁷ ¶ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? No, in no wise. But, I did not know sin except by the law; for neither would I have known lust if the law did not say, Thou shalt not covet. ⁸ Then sin, when there was occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of lust. For without the law sin was as if it were dormant.

¹³ ¶ For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only do not use liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by charity serve one another.

⁸ ¶ If ye truly fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well; ⁹ but if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin and are accused of the law as rebels. ¹⁰ For whosoever shall have kept the whole law, and then offends in one point is made guilty of all.

⁸ Owe no one anything, but love one unto another; for he that loves his neighbour has fulfilled the law.

⁴ ¶ Charity suffers long and is benign; charity envies not; charity does nothing without due reason, is not puffed up, ⁵ is not injurious, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil, ⁶ rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; ⁷ bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

¹⁰ Whatever thy hand finds to do, do it with all thy might, for there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol, where thou goest.

¹¹ ¶ The burden of Dumah. He calls to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of this night? Watchman, what of this night? ¹² The watchman said, The morning comes and then the night; if ye will enquire, enquire ye; return, and come.

⁶ So the shipmaster came to him and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that he will have compassion upon us that we not perish.

³ And in the morning, It will be foul weather today, for the heaven has an aurora and is cloudy. O ye hypocrites, ye know how to make decisions based on the face of the heaven, and regarding the signs of the times are ye unable?

⁴² Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. ⁴³ But know this that if the husband of the house knew in what watch the thief would come, he would watch and would not suffer his house to be broken into. ⁴⁴ Therefore be ye also ready; the Son of man is to come in the hour that ye think not.

⁵ While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. ⁶ And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go ye out to meet him. ⁷ Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.

⁴⁰ And he came unto the disciples and found them asleep and said unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? ⁴¹ Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

³⁵ Watch ye therefore, for ye know not when the Lord of the house comes: at evening or at midnight or at the cockcrowing or in the morning, ³⁶ lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. ³⁷ And what I say unto you, I say unto all: Watch.

²⁸ And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption draws near.

²⁹ But this I say, brothers, the time is short; for the rest, let those that have wives be as though they had none; ³⁰ and those that weep, as though they wept not; and those that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and those that buy, as though they possessed not; ³¹ and those that use this world, as not using it as their own, for the fashion of this world passes away.

¹¹ Now all these things happened unto them as types, and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

³⁴ Watch diligently, and sin not; for some do not know God: I speak this to your shame.

¹⁴ Therefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.

¹ ¶ But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. ² For ye know well that the day of the Lord shall come as a thief in the night. ³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction shall come upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

⁵ Ye are all the sons of light, and the sons of the day; we are not of the night, nor of darkness. ⁶ ¶ Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For those that sleep in the night, and those that are drunken are drunken in the night. ⁸ But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and charity, and for a helmet, the hope of saving health.

⁷ ¶ But the end of all things is at hand; be ye, therefore, temperate and watch unto prayer.

¹³ Nevertheless we, according to his promises, wait for new heavens and a new earth, in which dwells righteousness. ¹⁴ Therefore, beloved, seeing that ye hope for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless. ¹⁵ And have as saving health the patience of our Lord, even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him has written unto you

¹² And, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give each one according as his work shall be.

²⁰ ¶ He who testifies these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

¹⁴ The murderer rises with the light, kills the poor and the needy, and in the night is as a thief. ¹⁵ The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me; and disguises his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime; they do not know the light. ¹⁷ For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death; if they are known, the terrors of the shadow of death come over them.

¹⁷ Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away, return, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.

²⁰ In that day man shall cast his idols of silver and his idols of gold (which they made each one for himself to worship) into the caves of the moles and of the bats,

²² Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver and the protection of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Go away from here.

³¹ Cast away from you all your iniquities by which ye have rebelled, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? ³² For I do not desire the death of him that dies, said the Lord GOD; therefore turn yourselves, and ye shall live.

¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness more than the light because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. ²¹ But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

¹⁴ But be clothed with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not listen to the flesh, to fulfil its desires.

⁷ in the word of truth, in the power of God through the weapons of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

²² that ye put off everything concerning the old way of life, that is, the old man who corrupts himself according to deceitful desires,

¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

¹¹ Put on the whole armour of God that ye may be able to stand firm against the wiles of the devil. ¹² For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the lords of this age, rulers of this darkness, against spiritual wickedness in the heavens. ¹³ Therefore, take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day and stand fast, all the work having been finished. ¹⁴ Stand firm, therefore, having your loins girt about with truth and having on the breastplate, {the coat of mail and coat of arms} of righteousness, ¹⁵ and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, ¹⁶ above all, taking the shield of faith, with which ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. ¹⁷ And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; ¹⁸ praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching in this with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints

⁸ ¶ But now put ye also off all these things: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. ⁹ Lie not one to another, putting off the old man with his deeds ¹⁰ and being clothed with the new man, who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one that created him, ¹¹ where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian nor Scythian, slave nor free: but Christ is all and in all. ¹² ¶ Clothed, therefore, (as the elect of God, holy and beloved) with bowels of mercies, with kindness, with humility, with meekness, with tolerance, ¹³ forbearing one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a quarrel against another: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. ¹⁴ And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfection. ¹⁵ And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, into which likewise ye are called into one body, and be ye thankful. ¹⁶ Let the word of the Christ dwell in you in abundance in all wisdom, teaching you and exhorting you one to another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with grace singing in your hearts unto the Lord. ¹⁷ And whatever ye do whether in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the God and Father by him.

²¹ So then, leave all uncleanness and remains of malice and receive with meekness the word ingested within you, which is able to cause your souls to be saved.

¹ ¶ Having therefore left all malice and all guile and hypocrisies and envies and all murmurings,

⁵ ¶ This then is the promise which we have heard of him and declare unto you, That God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. ⁶ If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth; ⁷ But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have communion with him in the midst of us, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son cleanses us from all sin.

⁸ Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which is the truth in him and in you, because the darkness is past, and the true light now shines. ⁹ He that says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.

³ ¶ Blessed is he that reads and those that hear the words of this prophecy and keep those things which are written therein, for the time is at hand.

¹⁰ And he said unto me, do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book; for the time is at hand.

²⁰ Do not be among those who are drunk with wine; nor among gluttonous eaters of food;

¹² Therefore the Lord GOD of the hosts did call in this day unto weeping and to mourning and to baldness and to girding with sackcloth: ¹³ And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine while they say, let us eat and drink for tomorrow we shall die.

⁷ But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink; they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. ⁸ For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

⁴ that lie upon beds of ivory and stretch themselves upon their couches and eat the lambs out of the flock and the calves out of the midst of the stall; ⁵ that chant to the sound of the flute and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David; ⁶ that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

⁴⁸ But and if that evil slave shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming, ⁴⁹ and shall begin to smite his fellowslaves and even to eat and drink with the drunken, ⁵⁰ the lord of that slave shall come in a day when he does not look for him and in an hour that he is not aware of ⁵¹ and shall cut him off and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, blameless.

¹⁹ ¶ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day;

²⁷ They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. ²⁸ Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built;

³⁴ And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with excess and drunkenness and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

¹⁵ for these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

⁹ ¶ Know ye not that the unjust shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not err: neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor effeminate nor homosexuals ¹⁰ nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God.

¹⁵ But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye are not consumed one of another. ¹⁶ This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; which I denounce, as I have also told you in time past that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

²⁵ If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. ²⁶ Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

¹ ¶ I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation with which ye are called,

¹⁷ ¶ This I say, therefore, and require in the Lord that from now on ye not walk as the other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their own senses,

² and walk in charity even as the Christ also has loved us and has given himself for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour. ³ ¶ But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not be once named among you as becomes saints, ⁴ neither dishonest words nor foolishness nor low jesting, which are not convenient, but rather giving of thanks. ⁵ For this ye know, that no fornicator nor unclean person nor covetous man, who is also an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

⁸ For in another time ye were darkness, but now ye are light in the Lord: walk as children of light;

¹⁵ See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, in which there is excess, but be filled with the Spirit,

²⁷ ¶ Only let your conversation be as is worthy of the gospel of Christ, that whether I come and see you or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, unanimous, working together for the faith of the gospel,

³ Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in humility let each esteem others better than themselves,

¹⁶ Nevertheless, in that unto which we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us have the same mind. ¹⁷ ¶ Brethren, be imitators of me and consider those who so walk, as ye have us for a pattern. ¹⁸ (For many walk, of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross {Gr. stauros – stake} of Christ; ¹⁹ whose end shall be perdition, whose God is their belly and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things). ²⁰ For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

⁸ Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, exercise yourselves in these things. ⁹ Those things, which ye have both learned and received and heard and seen in me, do, and the God of peace shall be with you.

¹⁰ that ye might walk worthy of the Lord, pleasing him in everything, being fruitful in every good work, and growing in the knowledge of God,

⁵ ¶ Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil lust, and covetousness, which is idolatry;

¹² that ye would walk worthy of God, who has called you unto his kingdom and glory.

³ For the will of God is your sanctification, that ye should separate yourselves from fornication, ⁴ that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honesty, ⁵ not with affection of lust, as the Gentiles who do not know God,

¹² that ye may walk honestly toward those that are without, and that ye may desire nothing from any one.

¹⁷ Pray without ceasing.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not and do not be liars against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not that which descends from above, but is earthly, natural, diabolical. ¹⁶ For where there is envy and contention, there is confusion and every perverse work.

⁵ Do ye think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy?

¹ ¶ Having therefore left all malice and all guile and hypocrisies and envies and all murmurings, ² as newborn babes, desire the rational milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby in health;

¹¹ Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from the carnal desires which war against the soul ¹² and have your honest conversation among the Gentiles, so that, in that which they murmur about you as of evildoers, having witnessed your good works, they may glorify God in the day of visitation.

³ For it should suffice us that during the time past of our life we had done the will of the Gentiles, when we conversed in lasciviousness, lusts, drunkenness, gluttony, orgies, and abominable idolatries. ⁴ ¶ And it seems strange to those that speak evil of you, that ye do not run with them to the same unchecked dissolution; ⁵ the same shall give account to him that is ready to judge the living and the dead.

¹³ receiving the reward of their unrighteousness, as those that count it pleasure to live luxuriously every day. These are spots and blemishes, who eat together with you, while at the same time they revel in their deceit, ¹⁴ having their eyes full of adultery, and not knowing how to cease from sin, baiting unstable souls, having their heart exercised in covetous practices; cursed sons,

¹⁸ For speaking arrogant words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from those who converse in error, ¹⁹ promising them liberty, being they themselves the slaves of corruption: for he who is overcome by someone is subject to bondage by the one that overcame him. ²⁰ Certainly, if having separated themselves from the contaminations of the world, by the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they again entangle themselves therein and are overcome, their latter end is made worse for them than the beginnings.

⁶ He that says he abides in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

⁴ I have rejoiced greatly, for I have found of thy sons that they walk in the truth, as we have received the commandment from the Father.

²³ And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.

¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me as a robe; and my diadem was judgment.

¹² Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. ¹³ For if ye live according to the flesh, ye shall die; but if through the Spirit ye mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

²⁷ For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

¹⁶ This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. ¹⁷ For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one to the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

²⁴ For those that are of the Christ have crucified the flesh with its affections and lusts.

²⁴ and that ye put on the new man, which is created in conformity to God in righteousness and in the holiness of the truth.

⁵ ¶ Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil lust, and covetousness, which is idolatry; ⁶ for which things’ sake the wrath of God comes on the sons of disobedience, ⁷ in which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. ⁸ ¶ But now put ye also off all these things: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

¹⁰ and being clothed with the new man, who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one that created him, ¹¹ where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian nor Scythian, slave nor free: but Christ is all and in all. ¹² ¶ Clothed, therefore, (as the elect of God, holy and beloved) with bowels of mercies, with kindness, with humility, with meekness, with tolerance,

¹¹ Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from the carnal desires which war against the soul

¹⁵ Love not the world neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the charity of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. ¹⁷ And the world passes away and the lust thereof, but he that does the will of God abides for ever.
