¹ ¶ Then Naomi, her mother-in-law, said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee that it may be well with thee? ² And now is not Boaz of our kindred with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnows barley tonight in the threshing floor. ³ Therefore, thou shalt wash thyself and anoint thyself and put thy raiment upon thee and go down to the threshingfloor, but do not make thyself known unto the man until he shall have finished eating and drinking. ⁴ And it shall be when he lies down that thou shalt perceive the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in and uncover his feet and lie down there, and he will tell thee what thou shalt do. ⁵ And she said unto her, All that thou dost command me I will do. ⁶ ¶ And she went down to the threshing floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law had commanded her. ⁷ And when Boaz had eaten and drunk and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap, and she came softly and uncovered his feet and lay down. ⁸ And it came to pass at midnight that the man was startled and took hold, and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. ⁹ Then he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth, thy handmaid; spread therefore the edge of thy mantle over thy handmaid; for thou art a redeemer. ¹⁰ And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter, for thou hast shown more mercy in the end than at the first, not going after the young men, whether poor or rich. ¹¹ And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do unto thee all that thou hast said, for all the city of my people know that thou art a valiant woman. ¹² And now it is true that I am thy redeemer; however, there is another redeemer nearer than I (in kinship). ¹³ Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning that if he will redeem thee, well, let him redeem thee, but if he does not wish to redeem, then I will redeem thee, as the LORD lives; lie down until the morning. ¹⁴ ¶ And she lay at his feet until the morning, and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that the woman has come to the threshing floor. ¹⁵ Also he said, Bring the veil that thou hast upon thee and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley and laid it on her, and she went into the city. ¹⁶ And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, What now, my daughter? And she told her all that had happened to her with the man. ¹⁷ And she said, He gave me these six measures of barley, saying, Do not go empty unto thy mother-in-law. ¹⁸ Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou shall know how the matter will fall, for that man will not rest until he has concluded the thing today.

¹⁴ Therefore thou shalt think of me within thyself when it shall be well with thee, and show mercy, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh and bring me out of this house;

⁴⁰ Thou shalt keep, therefore, his statutes and his commandments which I command thee this day that it may go well with thee and with thy sons after thee and that thou may prolong thy days upon the land which the LORD thy God gives thee, for ever.

⁹ The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice and wept.

² When thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands; happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

¹⁵ Shalt thou reign, because thou dost enclose thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink and do judgment and righteousness, and then it was well with him? ¹⁶ He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him. Is this not to know me? said the LORD.

³⁶ ¶ But if anyone thinks it uncomely regarding his daughter, if she passes the bloom of life, and need so requires, let him do what he will, he does not sin: let them marry.

⁸ But if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

¹⁴ I desire therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, govern the house, giving no occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

⁵ ¶ When brethren dwell together and one of them dies and has no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry outside unto a stranger; her husband’s brother shall go in unto her and take her to him to wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her. ⁶ And it shall be that the firstborn which she bears shall be raised up in the name of his brother who is dead that his name be not blotted out of Israel. ⁷ And if the man does not desire to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders and say, My husband’s brother refuses to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother. ⁸ Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak unto him, and if he stands and says, I desire not to take her; ⁹ then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders and loose his shoe from off his foot and spit in his face and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother’s house. ¹⁰ And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that is barefoot.

¹ ¶ And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of strength, of the family of Elimelech, and his name was Boaz.

⁸ Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hear, my daughter, do not glean in another field, nor leave here; thou shalt cleave to my maidens.

²⁰ And Naomi said unto her daughter-in-law, Let him be blessed of the LORD, who has not left off his mercy unto the living nor unto the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, and of whom one has the right to redeem us. ²¹ And Ruth, the Moabitess, said, He also said unto me, Thou shalt cleave to my servants until they have finished all my harvest. ²² And Naomi replied unto Ruth her daughter-in-law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens that they not meet thee in any other field. ²³ So she kept close by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest and dwelt with her mother-in-law.

¹¹ For both he that sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all of one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, ¹² saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee. ¹³ And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God has given me. ¹⁴ ¶ Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same, that through death he might destroy him that had the empire of death, that is, the devil,

² And Joab sent to Tekoa and brought an astute woman from there and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner and put on mourning apparel and do not anoint thyself with oil, but be as a woman that has mourned for a long time for someone who is dead

¹ ¶ Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, over against the king’s house; and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.

¹⁵ and wine that makes glad the heart of man, making his face to shine with oil and bread which sustains man’s heart.

⁸ Thy garments shall always be white, and thy head shall never lack ointment.

¹⁷ But thou, when thou dost fast, anoint thine head, and wash thy face

⁹ ¶ In like manner also that the women adorn themselves in an honest manner, with shyness and modesty, not with ostentatious hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing ¹⁰ but with good works (as becomes women professing godliness).

²² Separate yourselves from all appearance of evil.

¹ ¶ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

²⁰ Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

¹² ¶ Honour thy father and thy mother that thy days may be lengthened upon the land which the LORD thy God gives thee.

⁸ My son, hearken unto the chastening of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

⁵ His mother said unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

¹⁴ Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you.

³⁴ And he took and sent portions unto them from before him; but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were drunk with him.

²⁵ And it came to pass when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson that he may make us laugh. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport, and they set him between the pillars.

⁶ And the two of them sat down together and ate and drank. And the damsel’s father said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and thy heart shall be merry.

⁹ And when the man rose up to depart, he and his concubine and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draws toward evening, I pray you tarry all night; behold, the day comes to an end; lodge here that thy heart may be merry, and tomorrow ye shall get up early and be on your way that thou may come unto thy tent.

²² ¶ Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, that men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about and beat at the doors and spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house that we may know him.

²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon, then kill him. Fear not; have I not commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant.

⁷ And Jezebel, his wife, said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? Arise and eat bread and let thy heart be merry; I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth of Jezreel.

¹⁰ ¶ On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven eunuchs that served in the presence of Ahasuerus, the king,

²⁴ There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. I also have seen that this is from the hand of God.

¹² I have learned that there is nothing better for them, but to rejoice and to do good in his life. ¹³ And also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labour; it is the gift of God.

¹⁵ Therefore I commended joy because a man has no better thing under the sun than to eat and to drink and to be merry, for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God gives him under the sun.

⁷ Go, eat thy bread with joy and drink thy wine with a joyful heart that thy works might be acceptable unto God.

¹⁹ The banquet is made for pleasure, and wine makes merry; but money answers all things.

³¹ Whether therefore ye eat or drink or whatever ye do, do everything for the glory of God.

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, in which there is excess, but be filled with the Spirit,

¹⁰ Then she fell on her face and bowed herself to the ground and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes that thou should acknowledge me, seeing I am a stranger? ¹¹ And Boaz answered and said unto her, It has fully been showed me all that thou hast done unto thy mother-in-law since the death of thy husband and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother and the land of thy nativity and art come three days ago unto a people whom thou didst not know before. ¹² Let the LORD recompense thy work and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to cover thyself. ¹³ Then she said, Let me find grace in thy sight, my lord, for thou hast comforted me and hast spoken unto the heart of thy handmaid though I am not like unto one of thy handmaidens.

²⁰ And Naomi said unto her daughter-in-law, Let him be blessed of the LORD, who has not left off his mercy unto the living nor unto the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, and of whom one has the right to redeem us.

¹² And now it is true that I am thy redeemer; however, there is another redeemer nearer than I (in kinship).

⁴¹ And she arose and bowed herself on her face to the earth and said, Behold, let thy handmaid be a slave to wash the feet of the slaves of my lord.

⁸ And I passed by thee and looked upon thee; behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my mantle over thee and covered thy shame; and I gave thee an oath and entered into a covenant with thee, said the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine;

¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

⁸ And Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to thy mother’s house; the LORD deal with you in mercy as ye have dealt with the dead and with me.

⁴ ¶ And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD bless thee.

⁴ ¶ Charity suffers long and is benign; charity envies not; charity does nothing without due reason, is not puffed up, ⁵ is not injurious, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil,

⁴ ¶ The virtuous woman is a crown to her husband, but she that makes ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

¹⁰ ¶ Aleph Who can find a valiant woman? for her price is far above precious stones.

²⁹ Resh Many daughters have done valiantly, but thou dost excel them all. ³⁰ Schin Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but the woman that fears the LORD shall be praised. ³¹ Tau Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.

¹ ¶ And Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and, behold, the redeemer of whom Boaz spoke came by unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! Come here and sit down. And he came and sat down.

¹² ¶ Therefore, all things whatsoever ye desire that men should do unto you, so also shall ye do unto them, for this is the law and the prophets.

⁶ that no one oppress and defraud his brother in any matter because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

⁵ Then Boaz replied, The day that thou dost receive the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must also receive Ruth, the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

² And thou shalt swear, The LORD lives, in truth, in judgment, and in righteous ness; and the Gentiles shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

²⁴ saying, Master, Moses said, If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up seed unto his brother. ²⁵ Now there were with us seven brothers, and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no seed, left his wife unto his brother; ²⁶ likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. ²⁷ And last of all the woman died also.

²³ Moreover I call God for a witness upon my soul that I have not yet come unto Corinth to spare you.

¹⁶ For men verily swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all controversy.

¹ ¶ A good name is better than precious ointment and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.

¹⁷ Not repaying anyone evil for evil; procuring that which is good not only in the sight of God, but even in the sight of all men.

¹⁶ Let not then your good be evil spoken of;

³² Be without offense, neither to the Jews nor to the Gentiles nor to the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} of God;

²¹ providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

¹² and have your honest conversation among the Gentiles, so that, in that which they murmur about you as of evildoers, having witnessed your good works, they may glorify God in the day of visitation.

⁸ But the liberal devises liberal things; and by liberal things shall he rise.

¹⁰ Therefore as long as we have the opportunity, let us do good unto everyone, especially unto those who are of the household of faith.

³ Beth Wait in the LORD and do good; live in the land and uphold the truth. ⁴ In the same manner delight thyself in the LORD, and he shall give thee the desires of thy heart. ⁵ Gimel Turn thy way unto the LORD and wait in him, and he shall bring it to pass.

¹⁶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believes shall not make haste.

⁷ For the Egyptians shall help in vain and to no purpose; therefore I have cried out concerning this that your strength should be to sit still.
