¹ David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave of Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him.

¹⁰ And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. ¹¹ And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands? ¹² And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath. ¹³ And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard. ¹⁴ Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me? ¹⁵ Do I lack mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?

¹³ And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines were encamped in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁴ And David was then in the hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lehem.

¹⁵ And three of the thirty chief went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines were encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

¹ [A Psalm] of David; when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed. I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me; for my soul taketh refuge in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I take refuge, until [these] calamities be overpast. ² I will cry unto God Most High; unto God that performeth [all things] for me. ³ He shall send from heaven, and save me, [when] he that would swallow me up reproacheth; Selah God shall send forth his mercy and his truth. ⁴ My soul is among lions; I lie among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. ⁵ Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; [let] thy glory [be] above all the earth. ⁶ They have prepared a net for my steps; thy soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me; they are fallen into the midst thereof themselves. Selah ⁷ My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing, yea, I will sing praises. ⁸ Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake right early. ⁹ I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the peoples: I will sing praises unto thee among the nations. ¹⁰ For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the skies. ¹¹ Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; [let] thy glory [be] above all the earth.

¹ Maschil of David, when he was in the cave; a Prayer. I cry with my voice unto the LORD; with my voice unto the LORD do I make supplication. ² I pour out my complaint before him; I shew before him my trouble. ³ When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walk have they hidden a snare for me. ⁴ Look on [my] right hand, and see; for there is no man that knoweth me: refuge hath failed me; no man careth for my soul. ⁵ I cried unto thee, O LORD; I said, Thou art my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. ⁶ Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I. ⁷ Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks unto thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

³ For, behold, the LORD cometh forth out of his place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth.

¹⁵ I will yet bring unto thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah, him that shall possess thee: the glory of Israel shall come even unto Adullam.

³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves, and the holes of the earth.
