⁹ And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearkenest thou to men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

¹⁶ Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

¹⁹ Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it be the LORD that hath stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if it be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave unto the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.

⁵ Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I destroy: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will I not suffer.

⁶ Their judges are thrown down by the sides of the rock; and they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.

²⁸ A froward man scattereth abroad strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

⁴ An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; [and] a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.

⁸ The words of a whisperer are as dainty, morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

²³ The north wind bringeth forth rain: so doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

²⁰ For lack of wood the fire goeth out: and where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth. ²¹ [As] coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to inflame strife. ²² The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

²⁸ A lying tongue hateth those whom it hath wounded; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

¹² If a ruler hearkeneth to falsehood, all his servants are wicked.

²¹ Also take not heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee: ²² for oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.
