²⁰ For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

¹² I will declare thy righteousness; and as for thy works, they shall not profit thee. ¹³ When thou criest, let them which thou hast gathered deliver thee; but the wind shall take them, a breath shall carry them all away: but he that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain.

⁵ They hatch basilisks’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper. ⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

⁶ For we are all become as one that is unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as a polluted garment: and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

³ He that killeth an ox is as he that slayeth a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as he that breaketh a dog’s neck; he that offereth an oblation, [as he that offereth] swine’s blood; he that burneth frankincense, as he that blesseth an idol: yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations; ⁴ I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did that which was evil in mine eyes, and chose that wherein I delighted not. ⁵ Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word: Your brethren that hate you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, have said, Let the LORD be glorified, that we may see your joy; but they shall be ashamed. ⁶ A voice of tumult from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.

⁸ Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit. ⁹ Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye have not known, ¹⁰ and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered; that ye may do all these abominations.

³⁰ What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith: ³¹ but Israel, following after a law of righteousness, did not arrive at [that] law. ³² Wherefore? Because [they sought it] not by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled at the stone of stumbling;

¹⁸ For the word of the cross is to them that are perishing foolishness; but unto us which are being saved it is the power of God. ¹⁹ For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the prudence of the prudent will I reject. ²⁰ Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? ²¹ For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom knew not God, it was God’s good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save them that believe. ²² Seeing that Jews ask for signs, and Greeks seek after wisdom: ²³ but we preach Christ crucified, unto Jews a stumblingblock, and unto Gentiles foolishness; ²⁴ but unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. ²⁵ Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. ²⁶ For behold your calling, brethren, how that not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, [are called]: ²⁷ but God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put to shame them that are wise; and God chose the weak things of the world, that he might put to shame the things that are strong; ²⁸ and the base things of the world, and the things that are despised, did God choose, [yea] and the things that are not, that he might bring to nought the things that are: ²⁹ that no flesh should glory before God. ³⁰ But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption: ³¹ that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
