⁵⁴ Waters flowed over mine head; I said, I am cut off.

¹¹ My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the droughts of my heart. ¹² They change the night into a day: the fight, [say they], is near unto the darkness. ¹³ If I look for Sheol as mine house; if I have spread my couch in the darkness; ¹⁴ If I have said to corruption, Thou art my father; to the worm, [Thou art] my mother, and my sister; ¹⁵ Where then is my hope? and as for my hope, who shall see it? ¹⁶ It shall go down to the bars of Sheol, when once there is rest in the dust.

⁴ The cords of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

²² As for me, I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

¹ For the Chief Musician; set to Shoshannim. [A Psalm] of David. Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. ² I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

¹⁵ Let not the waterflood overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up; and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

⁴ Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: ⁵ Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

¹⁰ I said, In the noontide of my days I shall go into the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years. ¹¹ I said, I shall not see the LORD, [even] the LORD in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world. ¹² Mine age is removed, and is carried away from me as a shepherd’s tent: I have rolled up like a weaver my life; he will cut me off from the loom: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me. ¹³ I quieted [myself] until morning; as a lion, so he breaketh all my bones: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.

¹⁸ And I said, My strength is perished, and mine expectation from the LORD.

¹¹ Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are clean cut off.

³ For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, and the flood was round about me; all thy waves and thy billows passed over me. ⁴ And I said, am cast out from before thine eyes; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. ⁵ The waters compassed me about, even to the soul; the deep was round about me; the weeds were wrapped about my head.

⁸ For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning our affliction which befell [us] in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, insomuch that we despaired even of life: ⁹ yea, we ourselves have had the answer of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: ¹⁰ who delivered us out of so great a death, and will deliver: on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us;
