²⁵ And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

¹⁶ And behold, one came to him and said, Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? ¹⁷ And he said unto him, Why askest thou me concerning that which is good? One there is who is good: but if thou wouldest enter into life, keep the commandments. ¹⁸ He saith unto him, Which? And Jesus said, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, ¹⁹ Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

³⁴ But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, gathered themselves together. ³⁵ And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, ³⁶ Master, which is the great commandment in the law? ³⁷ And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. ³⁸ This is the great and first commandment. ³⁹ And a second like [unto it] is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected for themselves the counsel of God, being not baptized of him.

⁴⁵ And one of the lawyers answering saith unto him, Master, in saying this thou reproachest us also. ⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you lawyers also! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

¹⁸ And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

³⁰ And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? ³¹ And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.

¹⁸ For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise: but God hath granted it to Abraham by promise.
