¹ A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance. O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. ² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds stink and are corrupt, because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with burning; and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am faint and sore bruised: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. ⁹ Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. ¹⁰ My heart throbbeth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. ¹¹ My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my plague; and my kinsmen stand afar off. ¹² They also that seek after my life lay snares [for me]; and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long. ¹³ But I, as a deaf man, hear not; and I am as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. ¹⁴ Yea, I am as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs. ¹⁵ For in thee, O LORD, do I hope: thou wilt answer, O Lord my God. ¹⁶ For I said, Lest they rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me. ¹⁷ For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me. ¹⁸ For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin. ¹⁹ But mine enemies are lively, [and] are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied. ²⁰ They also that render evil for good are adversaries unto me, because I follow the thing that is good. ²¹ Forsake me not, O LORD: O my God, be not far from me. ²² Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.

¹⁹ For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me that time also.

¹ For the Chief Musician. [A Psalm] of David; to bring to remembrance. [Make haste], O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O LORD.

⁷ Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath is gone over me; thy terrors have cut me off.

⁸ In measure, when thou sendest her away, thou dost contend with her; he hath removed [her] with his rough blast in the day of the east wind.

⁸ In overflowing wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy redeemer.

²⁴ O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

¹¹ For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have scattered thee, but I will not make a full end of thee; but I will correct thee with judgment, and will in no wise leave thee unpunished.

² O LORD, I have heard the report of thee, and am afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy.

⁵ and ye have forgotten the exhortation, which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him; ⁶ For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. ⁷ It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom [his] father chasteneth not? ⁸ But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they verily for a few days chastened [us] as seemed good to them; but he for [our] profit, that [we] may be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous, but grievous: yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, [even the fruit] of righteousness.

¹⁵ Moreover the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.

¹³ would ye therefore tarry till they were grown? would ye therefore stay from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes, for the hand of the LORD is gone forth against me.

⁶ But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with tumours, even Ashdod and the borders thereof.

¹¹ They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly discomfiture throughout all the city, the hand of God was very heavy there.

⁹ And see, if it goeth up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof my spirit drinketh up: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹² For thou shalt make them turn their back, thou shalt make ready with thy bowstrings against the face of them.

⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture was changed [as] with the drought of summer. Selah

¹⁰ Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand. ¹¹ When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah

⁷ But God shall shoot at them; with an arrow suddenly shall they be wounded.

¹² He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

¹⁹ Then Uzziah was wroth; and he had a censer in his hand to burn incense; and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy brake forth in his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, beside the altar of incense.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. ⁸ And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat among the ashes.

¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and with continual strife in his bones: ²⁰ So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. ²² Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, and his life to the destroyers.

² Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am withered away: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed.

⁹ Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in distress: mine eye wasteth away with grief, [yea], my soul and my body. ¹⁰ For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are wasted away.

⁸ Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

⁷ For we are consumed in thine anger, and in thy wrath are we troubled. ⁸ Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

³ For my days consume away like smoke, and my bones are burned as a firebrand.

⁵ By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my flesh.

⁵ Why will ye be still stricken, that ye revolt more and more? the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. ⁶ From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; [but] wounds, and bruises, and festering sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with oil.

⁴⁰ Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens. ⁴² We have transgressed and have rebelled; thou hast not pardoned.

¹⁸ And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings be eaten on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed unto him that offereth it: it shall be an abomination, and the soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity.

⁶ and I said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our guiltiness is grown up unto the heavens.

¹² For innumerable evils have compassed me about, mine iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head, and my heart hath failed me.

¹¹ He shall see of the travail of his soul, [and] shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many: and he shall bear their iniquities.

¹⁴ The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand; they are knit together, they are come up upon my neck; he hath made my strength to fail: the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, against whom I am not able to stand.

²⁸ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

²⁴ who his own self bare our sins in his body upon the tree, that we, having died unto sins, might live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed.

³ When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.

⁷ For my loins are filled with burning; and there is no soundness in my flesh.

⁵ O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.

²² Is there no balm in Gilead? is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

²⁸ I go mourning without the sun: I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help.

⁶ I am weary with my groaning; every night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.

¹⁰ For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are wasted away.

¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother: I bowed down mourning, as one that bewaileth his mother.

⁵ Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and [why] art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him [for] the health of his countenance.

⁹ I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

² For thou art the God of my strength; why hast thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

⁶ They have prepared a net for my steps; thy soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me; they are fallen into the midst thereof themselves. Selah

⁹ Mine eye wasteth away by reason of affliction: I have called daily upon thee, O LORD, I have spread forth my hands unto thee.

¹⁴ The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.

¹⁴ Like a swallow [or] a crane, so did I chatter; I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail [with looking] upward; O LORD, I am oppressed, be thou my surety.

¹⁸ And after all this the LORD smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease. ¹⁹ And it came to pass, in process of time, at the end of two years, that his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness, and he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin closeth up and breaketh out afresh.

¹⁸ By the great force [of my disease] is my garment disfigured: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.

⁸ An evil disease, [say they], cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.

²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

²⁴ For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like water.

¹ For the Chief Musician; set to Aijeleth hash-Shahar. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? [why art thou so] far from helping me, [and from] the words of my roaring? ² O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou answerest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

¹¹ We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

¹⁷ LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the meek: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

²⁰ To hear the sighing of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;

⁴⁸ Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

²² For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. ²³ And not only so, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for [our] adoption, [to wit], the redemption of our body.

²⁶ And in like manner the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity: for we know not how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for [us] with groanings which cannot be uttered; ²⁷ and he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to [the will of] God.

² For verily in this we groan, longing to be clothed upon with our habitation which is from heaven:

²⁷ But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened. ²⁸ Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth food this day. And the people were faint. ²⁹ Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

⁷ Mine eye wasteth away because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine adversaries.

¹ For the Chief Musician; Maschil of the sons of Korah. As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

³ I am weary with my crying; my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

⁸¹ My soul fainteth for thy salvation: [but] I hope in thy word. ⁸² Mine eyes fail for thy word, while I say, When wilt thou comfort me? ⁸³ For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.

¹²³ Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for thy righteous word.

⁴ Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate. ⁵ I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy doings: I muse on the work of thy hands. ⁶ I spread forth my hands unto thee: my soul [thirsteth] after thee, as a weary land. Selah ⁷ Make haste to answer me, O LORD; my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me; lest I become like them that go down into the pit.

⁴ My heart panteth, horror hath affrighted me: the twilight that I desired hath been turned into trembling unto me.

¹¹ Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the young children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.

¹⁶ The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us! for we have sinned. ¹⁷ For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim;

²¹ For now ye are nothing; ye see a terror, and are afraid. ²² Did I say, Give unto me? or, offer a present for me of your substance? ²³ Or, Deliver me from the adversary’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors?

¹³ He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are wholly estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight. ¹⁶ I call unto my servant, and he giveth me no answer, [though] I entreat him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My breath is strange to my wife, and my supplication to the children of my [mother’s] womb.

¹¹ Because of all mine adversaries I am become a reproach, yea, unto my neighbours exceedingly, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

¹⁸ Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

⁴ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

⁸ By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who [among them] considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living? for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

⁵⁶ But all this is come to pass, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him, and fled.

³¹ And by chance a certain priest was going down that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. ³² And in like manner a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side.

⁵⁴ And they seized him, and led him [away], and brought him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed afar off.

⁴⁹ And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed with him from Galilee, stood afar off, seeing these things.

³² Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and [yet] I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and man of Belial: ⁸ The LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art [taken] in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.

¹ Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night: ² and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only: ³ and I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: [so] all the people shall be in peace.

⁹ He lurketh in the covert as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him in his net.

⁴ Let them be ashamed and brought to dishonour that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and confounded that devise my hurt.

²⁰ For they speak not peace: but they devise deceitful words against them that are quiet in the land.

³ For strangers are risen up against me, and violent men have sought after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah

³ How long will ye set upon a man, that ye may slay [him], all of you, like a bowing wall, like a tottering fence? ⁴ They only consult to thrust him down from his excellency; they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah

² Hide me from the secret counsel of evil-doers; from the tumult of the workers of iniquity: ³ Who have whet their tongue like a sword, and have aimed their arrows, even bitter words: ⁴ That they may shoot in secret places at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not. ⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil purpose; they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?

¹¹⁰ The wicked have laid a snare for me; yet went I not astray from thy precepts.

⁵ The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the way side; they have set gins for me. Selah

⁹ Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me, and from the gins of the workers of iniquity.

¹⁹ And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them. ²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor. ²¹ And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person [of any], but of a truth teachest the way of God: ²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

¹⁰ And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? Because he curseth, and because the LORD hath said unto him, Curse David; who then shall say, Wherefore hast thou done so? ¹¹ And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more [may] this Benjamite now [do it]? let him alone, and let him curse; for the LORD hath bidden him. ¹² It may be that the LORD will look on the wrong done unto me, and that the LORD will requite me good for [his] cursing of me this day.

² I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

⁹ I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.

⁷ He was oppressed, yet he humbled himself and opened not his mouth; as a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before her shearers is dumb; yea, he opened not his mouth.

²³ who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:

¹³ Therefore he that is prudent shall keep silence in such a time; for it is an evil time.

⁵ Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.

³ And the chief priests accused him of many things. ⁴ And Pilate again asked him, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they accuse thee of. ⁵ But Jesus no more answered anything; insomuch that Pilate marveled.

⁶ And this they said, tempting him, that they might have [whereof] to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

⁶ I have called upon thee, for thou wilt answer me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, [and] hear my speech.

⁷ And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.

¹ A Song of Ascents. Unto thee do I lift up mine eyes, O thou that sittest in the heavens. ² Behold, as the eyes of servants [look] unto the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes [look] unto the LORD our God, until he have mercy upon us. ³ Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.

³ In the day that I called thou answeredst me, thou didst encourage me with strength in my soul.

³⁵ Vengeance is mine, and recompence, At the time when their foot shall slide: For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things that are to come upon them shall make haste.

³ Consider [and] answer me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the [sleep of] death; ⁴ Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; [lest] mine adversaries rejoice when I am moved.

²⁴ Judge me, O LORD my God, according to thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me. ²⁵ Let them not say in their heart, Aha, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up. ²⁶ Let them be ashamed and confounded together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.

¹⁸ When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.

¹⁵ But when I halted they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew [it] not; they did tear me, and ceased not:

⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my hand was stretched out in the night, and slacked not; my soul refused to be comforted. ³ I remember God, and am disquieted: I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. Selah

³ He was despised, and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and as one from whom men hide their face he was despised, and we esteemed him not. ⁴ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. ⁵ But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

⁶ In that day, saith the LORD, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven away, and her that I have afflicted; ⁷ and I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth even for ever.

³³ If like Adam I covered my transgressions, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom;

²⁷ He singeth before men, and saith, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not:

⁵ I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah

³ For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

¹³ He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy.

⁷ and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort wherewith he was comforted in you, while he told us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced yet more. ⁸ For though I made you sorry with my epistle, I do not regret it, though I did regret; for I see that that epistle made you sorry, though but for a season. ⁹ Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry unto repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly sort, that ye might suffer loss by us in nothing. ¹⁰ For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, [a repentance] which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. ¹¹ For behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what longing, yea, what zeal, yea, what avenging! In everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in the matter.

¹ A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son. LORD, how are mine adversaries increased! many are they that rise up against me.

¹⁷ He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me, for they were too mighty for me.

¹⁹ Consider mine enemies, for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.

¹⁹ Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

Be merciful unto me, O God; for man would swallow me up: all the day long he fighting oppresseth me. ² Mine enemies would swallow me up all the day long: for they be many that fight proudly against me.

¹ For the Chief Musician; [set to] Al-tashheth. [A Psalm] of David: Michtam: when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him. Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: set me on high from them that rise up against me. ² Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from the bloodthirsty men. ³ For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul; the mighty gather themselves together against me: not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.

⁴ They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would cut me off, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.

²² And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.

¹⁸ If the world hateth you, ye know that it hath hated me before [it hated] you. ¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. ²⁰ Remember the word that I said unto you, A servant is not greater than his lord. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. ²¹ But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me. ²² If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ He that hateth me hateth my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which none other did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. ²⁵ But [this cometh to pass], that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

²⁵ who by the Holy Ghost, [by] the mouth of our father David thy servant, didst say, Why did the Gentiles rage, And the peoples imagine vain things? ²⁶ The kings of the earth set themselves in array, And the rulers were gathered together, Against the Lord, and against his Anointed: ²⁷ for of a truth in this city against thy holy Servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together, ²⁸ to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel foreordained to come to pass.

⁴ And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good: ⁵ for he put his life in his hand, and smote the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great victory for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause? ⁶ And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As the LORD liveth, he shall not be put to death.

⁵ And David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and slew therewith a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

¹² Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver up me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.

¹⁶ they were a wall unto us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.

²¹ Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath returned me evil for good.

⁴ If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause was mine adversary:)

¹² They reward me evil for good, [to] the bereaving of my soul.

³ They compassed me about also with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause. ⁴ For my love they are my adversaries: but I [give myself unto] prayer. ⁵ And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy fury from them.

¹⁰ Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

³² Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from the Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?

¹³ And who is he that will harm you, if ye be zealous of that which is good?

¹⁷ For it is better, if the will of God should so will, that ye suffer for well-doing than for evil-doing. ¹⁸ Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in the flesh, but quickened in the spirit;

¹⁴ If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed [are ye]; because the [Spirit] of glory and the Spirit of God resteth upon you. ¹⁵ For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil-doer, or as a meddler in other men’s matters: ¹⁶ but if [a man suffer] as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name.

¹¹ Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.

²⁴ For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.

¹³ Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: make haste to help me, O LORD.

¹⁷ But I am poor and needy; [yet] the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.
