³⁵ Treatment of Poor Israelis“If your relative becomes so poor that he is indebted to you, then you are to support him. You are to let him live with you just like the resident alien and the traveler.

⁹ You are not to oppress the resident alien, because you were aliens in the land of Egypt.”

³⁴ You are to treat the resident alien the same way you treat the native born among you—love him like yourself, since you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.

²⁵ “If your brother becomes so poor that he has to a sell portion of his inheritance, then his nearest kinsman redeemer is to come and redeem what his brother has sold.

¹⁸ He executes justice for the orphan and the widows, loves the foreigner, and gives them food and clothing.”
¹⁹ Love Others“You are to love the foreigner, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.

⁷ Care for the Poor“If there should be a poor man among your relatives in one of the cities of the land that the LORD your God is about to give you, don’t be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your poor relative. ⁸ Instead, be sure to open your hand to him and lend him enough to lessen his need.

¹⁴ Don’t take advantage of a hired person who is poor and needy, whether he’s your fellow citizen or a foreigner who lives in your city. ¹⁵ Pay his wages that same day before the sun sets, because he is poor and his livelihood depends on it. Otherwise, he may cry out to the LORD against you, and you will incur guilt.”

²⁶ Every day he is generous, lending freely, and his descendants are blessed.

When Things Go Wrong Blessed is the one who is considerate of the destitute; the LORD will deliver him when the times are evil.

⁵ It is good for the person who lends generously, conducting his affairs with fairness.

⁹ He gives generously to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.

²⁰ The poor person is shunned by his neighbor, but many are the friends of the wealthy. ²¹ Whoever despises his neighbor sins, but whoever shows kindness to the poor will be happy.

³¹ Whoever oppresses the poor defies their Creator, but whoever is kind to the needy honors them.

⁵ Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their maker, and whoever is happy about disaster will not go unpunished.

¹⁷ Whoever is kind to the poor is lending to the LORD— the benefit of his gift will return to him in abundance.

³⁵ because I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger, and you welcomed me.

⁷ because you’ll always have the destitute with you and can help them whenever you want, but you won’t always have me.

³⁵ Rather, love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind even to ungrateful and evil people.

⁸ because you will always have the destitute with you, but you won’t always have me.”

²⁹ So all of the disciples decided they would send a contribution to the brothers living in Judea, as they were able,

¹³ Supply the needs of the saints. Extend hospitality to strangers.

¹⁸ If possible, so far as it depends on you, live in peace with all people.

²⁰ But “if your enemy is hungry, feed him. For if he is thirsty, give him a drink. If you do this, you will pile burning coals on his head.”

⁹ For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah. Although he was rich, for your sakes he became poor, so that you, through his poverty, might become rich.

¹ Why Giving is ImportantI do not need to write to you any further about the ministry to the saints.

¹² since this ministry you render is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, it is also overflowing with more and more prayers of thanksgiving to God. ¹³ Because your service in giving proves your love, you will be glorifying God as you obey what your confession of the Messiah’s gospel demands, since you are generous in sharing with them and with everyone else. ¹⁴ And so in their prayers for you they will long for you because of God’s exceptional grace that was shown to you. ¹⁵ Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

¹⁰ The only thing they asked us to do was to remember the destitute, the very thing I was eager to do.

² Stop neglecting to show hospitality to strangers, for by showing hospitality some have had angels as their guests without being aware of it.

⁵ Listen, my dear brothers! God has chosen the poor in the world to become rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who keep on loving him, has he not? ⁶ But you have humiliated the man who is poor. Are not rich people the ones who oppress you and drag you into court?

¹⁷ Whoever has earthly possessions and notices a brother in need and yet withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God be present in him?
