⁴ And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; but not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion wherewith he ruled; for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment? ⁶ Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds; ⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; they that have seen him shall say: 'Where is he?'

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a leafy tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not; yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

⁶ (39:7) Surely man walketh as a mere semblance; surely for vanity they are in turmoil; he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

⁶ (49:7) Of them that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches? ⁷ (49:8) No man can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him - ⁸ (49:9) For too costly is the redemption of their soul, and must be let alone for ever - ⁹ (49:10) That he should still live alway, that he should not see the pit. ¹⁰ (49:11) For he seeth that wise men die, the fool and the brutish together perish, and leave their wealth to others. ¹¹ (49:12) Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling-places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. ¹² (49:13) But man abideth not in honour; he is like the beasts that perish.

¹⁷ Until I entered into the sanctuary of God, and considered their end. ¹⁸ Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh, so, O Lord, when Thou arousest Thyself, Thou wilt despise their semblance.

¹⁸ And I hated all my labour wherein I laboured under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

⁸ There is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labour, neither is his eye satisfied with riches: 'for whom then do I labour, and bereave my soul of pleasure?' This also is vanity, yea, it is a grievous business.

¹⁵ And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them up, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land.

¹⁷ But if they will not hearken, then will I pluck up that nation, plucking up and destroying it, saith the LORD.

⁷ At one instant I may speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it;

⁴⁰ And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.

⁴ Thus shalt thou say unto him: Thus saith the LORD: Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up; and this in the whole land.

² Daniel spoke and said: I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven broke forth upon the great sea.

⁶ After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the sides of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.

⁸ I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots; and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.

⁸ And the he-goat magnified himself exceedingly; and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and instead of it there came up the appearance of four horns toward the four winds of heaven.

²² And as for that which was broken, in the place whereof four stood up, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not with his power.

²⁵ And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand;

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?
