¹³ thou shalt surely restore to him the pledge when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his garment, and bless thee; and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.

⁶ And he believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him for righteousness.

²⁶ (22:25) If thou at all take thy neighbour's garment to pledge, thou shalt restore it unto him by that the sun goeth down; ²⁷ (22:26) for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin; wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto Me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

²⁵ And it shall be righteousness unto us, if we observe to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as He hath commanded us.'

⁹ Beware that there be not a base thought in thy heart, saying: 'The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand'; and thine eye be evil against thy needy brother, and thou give him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin in thee. ¹⁰ Thou shalt surely give him, and thy heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him; because that for this thing the LORD thy God will bless thee in all thy work, and in all that thou puttest thy hand unto.

¹⁵ In the same day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD and it be sin in thee.

⁷ They lie all night naked without clothing, and have no covering in the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter.

¹¹ For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me, it gave witness unto me; ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

¹⁶ If I have withheld aught that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof - ¹⁸ Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother's womb. ¹⁹ If I have seen any wanderer in want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

³⁰ Then stood up Phinehas, and wrought judgment, and so the plague was stayed. ³¹ And that was counted unto him for righteousness, unto all generations for ever.

⁹ He hath scattered abroad, he hath given to the needy; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted in honour.

⁸ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy healing shall spring forth speedily; and thy righteousness shall go before thee, the glory of the LORD shall be thy rearward.

⁷ and hath not wronged any, but hath restored his pledge for a debt, hath taken nought by robbery, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

¹² hath wronged the poor and needy, hath taken by robbery, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

¹⁶ neither hath wronged any, hath not taken aught to pledge, neither hath taken by robbery, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,

¹⁵ if the wicked restore the pledge, give back that which he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.

²⁷ (4:24) Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by almsgiving, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of thy prosperity.'

⁸ And they lay themselves down beside every altar upon clothes taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of them that have been fined.

¹³ seeing that through the proving of you by this ministration they glorify God for the obedience of your confession unto the gospel of Christ, and for the liberality of your contribution unto them and unto all, ¹⁴ while they themselves also, with supplication on your behalf, long after you by reason of the exceeding grace of God in you.

²⁶ Be ye angry, and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

¹⁶ The Lord grant mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain, ¹⁷ but, when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me ¹⁸ (the Lord grant unto him to find mercy of the Lord in that day), and in how many things he ministered at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

²⁷ Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

¹³ For judgment is without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy; mercy glorieth against judgment. ¹⁴ What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him? ¹⁵ And if a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled, and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body, what doth it profit? ¹⁷ Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself. ¹⁸ Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; show me thy faith apart from thy works, and I by my works will show thee my faith. ¹⁹ Thou believest that God is one, thou doest well; the demons also believe, and shudder. ²⁰ But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is barren? ²¹ Was not Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son upon the altar? ²² Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect, ²³ and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness, and he was called the friend of God.
