¹ Now Sarai Abram's wife bore him no children; and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. ² And Sarai said unto Abram: 'Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing; go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; it may be that I shall be builded up through her.' And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. ³ And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife. ⁴ And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. ⁵ And Sarai said unto Abram: 'My wrong be upon thee: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.' ⁶ But Abram said unto Sarai: 'Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her that which is good in thine eyes.' And Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face. ⁷ And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. ⁸ And he said: 'Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence camest thou? and whither goest thou?' And she said: 'I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.' ⁹ And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.' ¹⁰ And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'I will greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. ¹¹ And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. ¹² And he shall be a wild ass of a man: his hand shall be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the face of all his brethren.' ¹³ And she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou art a God of seeing; for she said: 'Have I even here seen Him that seeth Me?' ¹⁴ Wherefore the well was called 'Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. ¹⁵ And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. ¹⁶ And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

³⁰ And Sarai was barren; she had no child.

¹⁶ And he dealt well with Abram for her sake; and he had sheep, and oxen, and he-asses, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and she-asses, and camels.

² And Abram said: 'O Lord GOD, what wilt Thou give me, seeing I go hence childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?' ³ And Abram said: 'Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed, and, lo, one born in my house is to be mine heir.'

⁹ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne unto Abraham, making sport. ¹⁰ Wherefore she said unto Abraham: 'Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.'

¹² And God said unto Abraham: 'Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah saith unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall seed be called to thee.

²¹ And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

²¹ And Isaac entreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD let Himself be entreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

² And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bore not.

⁷ And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

³⁶ And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren.

²⁴ Which things contain an allegory; for these women are two covenants, one from mount Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, which is Hagar.

¹ Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman: 'Yea, hath God said: Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden?' ² And the woman said unto the serpent: 'Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; ³ but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said: Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.' ⁴ And the serpent said unto the woman: 'Ye shall not surely die; ⁵ for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.' ⁶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.

¹² And the man said: 'The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.'

¹⁷ And unto Adam He said: 'Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying: Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

¹⁶ And I will bless her, and moreover I will give thee a son of her; yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be of her.'

¹⁰ And He said: 'I will certainly return unto thee when the season cometh round; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son.' And Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him. -

¹⁸ For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.

² And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel; and he said: 'Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?' ³ And she said: 'Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; that she may bear upon my knees, and I also may be builded up through her.' ⁴ And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife; and Jacob went in unto her.

⁶ And Rachel said: 'God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son.' Therefore called she his name Dan.

⁹ When Leah saw that she had left off bearing, she took Zilpah her handmaid, and gave her to Jacob to wife. ¹⁰ And Zilpah Leah's handmaid bore Jacob a son.

²² And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.

⁴ If his master give him a wife, and she bear him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.

¹¹ And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said: 'We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel; and do thou worthily in Ephrath, and be famous in Beth-lehem;

³ Lo, children are a heritage of the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward.

⁴ So Abram went, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him; and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. ⁵ And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

⁵ And Sarai said unto Abram: 'My wrong be upon thee: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.'

⁶ But unto the sons of the concubines, that Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts; and he sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.

⁹ so Esau went unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives that he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.

⁴ And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife; and Jacob went in unto her.

⁹ When Leah saw that she had left off bearing, she took Zilpah her handmaid, and gave her to Jacob to wife.

²² (32:23) And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven children, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok.

²² And it came to pass, while Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

¹ And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem in Judah. ² And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Beth-lehem in Judah, and was there the space of four months. ³ And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her back, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses; and she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him. ⁴ And his father-in-law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days; so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

¹³ And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron; and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

³ And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.

²⁵ Now this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answereth to the Jerusalem that now is; for she is in bondage with her children.

⁶ And her rival vexed her sore, to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she vexed her; therefore she wept, and would not eat. ⁸ And Elkanah her husband said unto her: 'Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?'

¹⁶ And it was so, as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

²⁰ So is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith: 'I have done no wickedness.' ²¹ For three things the earth doth quake, and for four it cannot endure:

²³ For an odious woman when she is married; and a handmaid that is heir to her mistress.

⁶ Now these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that in us ye might learn not to think beyond the things which are written, that no one of you be puffed up for the one against the other.

⁴ Love suffereth long, and is kind, love envieth not, love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, ⁵ doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not its own, is not provoked, taketh not account of evil,

⁵³ The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us.' And Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.

²¹ and they said unto them: 'The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.'

¹² (24:13) The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee; but my hand shall not be upon thee. ¹³ (24:14) As saith the proverb of the ancients: Out of the wicked cometh forth wickedness; but my hand shall not be upon thee. ¹⁴ (24:15) After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea. ¹⁵ (24:16) The LORD therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand.'

²² Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said: 'The LORD look upon it, and require it.'

⁸ (7:9) O LORD, who ministerest judgment to the peoples, judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me.

²³ Rouse Thee, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord.

¹ Be Thou my judge, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

⁴⁰ But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and she came up to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister did leave me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. ⁴¹ But Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things;

⁸ And Abram said unto Lot: 'Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we are brethren. ⁹ Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me; if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou take the right hand, then I will go to the left.'

¹⁰ And the servant took ten camels, of the camels of his master, and departed; having all goodly things of his master's in his hand; and he arose, and went to Aram-naharaim, unto the city of Nahor.

¹⁵ Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well.

⁶ And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Behold, he is in thy hand; only spare his life.'

⁴¹ And He gave them into the hand of the nations; and they that hated them ruled over them. ⁴² Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were subdued under their hand.

²⁹ He that is slow to anger is of great understanding; but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

¹ A soft answer turneth away wrath; but a grievous word stirreth up anger.

¹⁷ Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. ¹⁸ A wrathful man stirreth up discord; but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

⁸ As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

¹⁹ A servant will not be corrected by words; for though he understand, there will be no response.

⁴ If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for gentleness allayeth great offences.

⁵ Then Zedekiah the king said: 'Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.'

⁷ Ye husbands, in like manner, dwell with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor unto the woman, as unto the weaker vessel, as being also joint-heirs of the grace of life, to the end that your prayers be not hindered.

¹ And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the land of the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar.

¹⁷ And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her: 'What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.

¹¹ And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said: 'Abraham, Abraham.' And he said: 'Here am I.'

¹⁵ And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven,

¹⁸ And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Asshur: over against all his brethren he did settle.

¹¹ And the angel of God said unto me in the dream: Jacob; and I said: Here am I.

²² And Moses led Israel onward from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.

⁷ And Saul smote the Amalekites, from Havilah as thou goest to Shur, that is in front of Egypt.

³ The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch upon the evil and the good.

⁹ And the LORD God called unto the man, and said unto him: 'Where art thou?'

¹⁰ And He said: 'What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto Me from the ground.

¹⁹ Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it be the LORD that hath stirred thee up against me, let Him accept an offering; but if it be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave unto the inheritance of the LORD, saying: Go, serve other gods.

¹⁷ Is it not this that doth cause it unto thee, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when He led thee by the way? ¹⁸ And now what hast thou to do in the way to Egypt, to drink the waters of Shihor? Or what hast thou to do in the way to Assyria, to drink the waters of the River?

⁵ Servants, be obedient unto them that according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ, ⁶ not in the way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, ⁷ with good will doing service, as unto the Lord, and not unto men: ⁸ knowing that whatsoever good thing each one doeth, the same shall he receive again from the Lord, whether he be bond or free.

¹ Let as many as are servants under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and the doctrine be not blasphemed. ² And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren, but let them serve them the rather, because they that partake of the benefit are believing and beloved. These things teach and exhort.

²¹ subjecting yourselves one to another in the fear of Christ.

⁵ Servants, be obedient unto them that according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ, ⁶ not in the way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,

⁹ Exhort servants to be in subjection to their own masters, and to be well-pleasing to them in all things, not gainsaying,

¹⁸ Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. ¹⁹ For this is acceptable, if for conscience toward God a man endureth griefs, suffering wrongfully. ²⁰ For what glory is it, if, when ye sin, and are buffeted for it, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye shall take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. ²¹ For hereunto were ye called; because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that ye should follow his steps: ²² who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: ²³ who, when he was reviled, reviled not again, when he suffered threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: ²⁴ who his own self bare our sins in his body upon the tree, that we, having died unto sins, might live unto righteousness, by whose stripes ye were healed. ²⁵ For ye were going astray like sheep, but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another. Gird yourselves with humility, for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. ⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,

²⁰ And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee; behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

¹³ And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.'

¹⁶ And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow-shot; for she said: 'Let me not look upon the death of the child.' And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.

¹⁸ Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him fast by thy hand; for I will make him a great nation.'

¹⁵ And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven, ¹⁶ and said: 'By Myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, ¹⁷ that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; ¹⁸ and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast hearkened to My voice.'

¹² Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bore unto Abraham. ¹³ And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the first-born of Ishmael, Nebaioth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, ¹⁴ and Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa; ¹⁵ Hadad, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedem; ¹⁶ these are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their villages, and by their encampments; twelve princes according to their nations. ¹⁷ And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, a hundred and thirty and seven years; and he expired and died; and was gathered unto his people. ¹⁸ And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Asshur: over against all his brethren he did settle.

¹¹ And the angel of God said unto me in the dream: Jacob; and I said: Here am I. ¹² And he said: Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the he-goats which leap upon the flock are streaked, speckled, and grizzled; for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee. ¹³ I am the God of Beth-el, where thou didst anoint a pillar, where thou didst vow a vow unto Me. Now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy nativity.'

²⁴ (32:25) And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. ²⁵ (32:26) And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him. ²⁶ (32:27) And he said: 'Let me go, for the day breaketh.' And he said: 'I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.' ²⁷ (32:28) And he said unto him: 'What is thy name?' And be said: 'Jacob.' ²⁸ (32:29) And he said: 'Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed.' ²⁹ (32:30) And Jacob asked him, and said: 'Tell me, I pray thee, thy name.' And he said: 'Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?' And he blessed him there. ³⁰ (32:31) And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: 'for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.'

¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph, and said: 'The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God who hath been my shepherd all my life long unto this day, ¹⁶ the angel who hath redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named in them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.'

² And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. ³ And Moses said: 'I will turn aside now, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.' ⁴ And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said: 'Moses, Moses.' And he said: 'Here am I.' ⁵ And He said: 'Draw not nigh hither; put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.' ⁶ Moreover He said: 'I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

¹ And the angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said: '...I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I swore unto your fathers; and I said: I will never break My covenant with you; ² and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars; but ye have not hearkened unto My voice; what is this ye have done? ³ Wherefore I also said: I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be unto you as snares, and their gods shall be a trap unto you.'

¹¹ And the angel of the LORD came, and sat under the terebinth which was in Ophrah, that belonged unto Joash the Abiezrite; and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

¹⁶ And the LORD said unto him: 'Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.'

²¹ Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight. ²² And Gideon saw that he was the angel of the LORD; and Gideon said: 'Alas, O Lord GOD! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face.' ²³ And the LORD said unto him: 'Peace be unto thee; fear not; thou shalt not die.' ²⁴ Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it 'Adonai-shalom'; unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

¹⁶ And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah: 'Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt make ready a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD.' For Manoah knew not that he was the angel of the LORD. ¹⁷ And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD: 'What is thy name, that when thy words come to pass we may do thee honour?' ¹⁸ And the angel of the LORD said unto him: 'Wherefore askest thou after my name, seeing it is hidden?' ¹⁹ So Manoah took the kid with the meal-offering, and offered it upon the rock unto the LORD; and the angel did wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on. ²⁰ For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar; and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground. ²¹ But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the LORD. ²² And Manoah said unto his wife: 'We shall surely die, because we have seen God.'

⁶ (83:7) The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab, and the Hagrites; ⁷ (83:8) Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;

⁹ In all their affliction He was afflicted, and the angel of His presence saved them; in His love and in His pity He redeemed them; and He bore them, and carried them all the days of old.

³ (12:4) In the womb he took his brother by the heel, and by his strength he strove with a godlike being; ⁴ (12:5) So he strove with an angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication unto him; at Beth-el he would find him, and there he would speak with us; ⁵ (12:6) But the LORD, the God of hosts, the LORD is His name.

⁸ (2:12) For thus saith the LORD of hosts who sent me after glory unto the nations which spoiled you: 'Surely, he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. ⁹ (2:13) For, behold, I will shake My hand over them, and they shall be a spoil to those that served them'; and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me.

¹ Behold, I send My messenger, and he shall clear the way before Me; and the Lord, whom ye seek, will suddenly come to His temple, and the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in, behold, he cometh, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹⁸ No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

³⁰ And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. ³¹ And when Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight; and as he drew near to behold, there came unto him a voice of the Lord, ³² I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not behold. ³³ And the Lord said unto him, Loose the shoes from thy feet; for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. ³⁴ I have surely seen the affliction of my people that is in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I am come down to deliver them; and now come, I will send thee into Egypt. ³⁵ This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? him hath God sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush. ³⁶ This man led them forth, having wrought wonders and signs in Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years. ³⁷ This is that Moses, who said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord our God raise up unto you from among your brethren, like unto me. ³⁸ This is he that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel that spake to him in the Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received a living oracle to give unto us:

¹⁶ who only hath immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable, whom no man hath seen, nor can see; to whom be honor and power eternal. Amen.

¹⁹ And God said: "Nay, but Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him.

³² And Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said: 'Because the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.' ³³ And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said: 'Because the LORD hath heard that I am hated, He hath therefore given me this son also.' And she called his name Simeon. ³⁴ And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said: 'Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have borne him three sons.' Therefore was his name called Levi. ³⁵ And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she said: 'This time will I praise the LORD.' Therefore she called his name Judah; and she left off bearing.

⁵¹ And Joseph called the name of the first-born Manasseh: 'for God hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.' ⁵² And the name of the second called he Ephraim: 'for God hath made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.'

²³ And it came to pass in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. ²⁴ And God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

⁷ And the LORD said: 'I have surely seen the affliction of My people that are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their pains;

⁹ And now, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto Me; moreover I have seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.

²⁰ And it came to pass, when the time was come about, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she called his name Samuel: 'because I have asked him of the LORD.'

⁴¹ Who provideth for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry unto God, and wander for lack of food?

²⁴ (22:25) For He hath not despised nor abhorred the lowliness of the poor; neither hath He hid His face from him; but when he cried unto Him, He heard.'

¹⁴ Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: behold, the young woman shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

²¹ And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS, for it is he that shall save his people from their sins. ²² Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, ²³ Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel, which is, being interpreted, God with us.

¹³ But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias; because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

³¹ And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

⁶³ And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marveled all.

²⁰ And God was with the lad, and he grew; and he dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

⁴⁰ And by thy sword shalt thou live, and thou shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt break loose, that thou shalt shake his yoke from off thy neck.

¹² But an empty man will get understanding, when a wild ass's colt is born a man.

⁵ Who hath sent out the wild ass free? Or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass? ⁶ Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the salt land his dwelling-place. ⁷ He scorneth the tumult of the city, neither heareth he the shoutings of the driver. ⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.

⁷ And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

⁹ And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.' ¹⁰ And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'I will greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

¹⁴ And Abraham called the name of that place Adonai-jireh; as it is said to this day: 'In the mount where the LORD is seen.'

¹⁷ And he was afraid, and said: 'How full of awe is this place! this is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.'

⁴² Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the Fear of Isaac, had been on my side, surely now hadst thou sent me away empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and gave judgment yesternight.'

³⁰ (32:31) And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: 'for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.'

¹⁸ And he said: 'Show me, I pray Thee, Thy glory.' ¹⁹ And He said: 'I will make all My goodness pass before thee, and will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.' ²⁰ And He said: 'Thou canst not see My face, for man shall not see Me and live.' ²¹ And the LORD said: 'Behold, there is a place by Me, and thou shalt stand upon the rock. ²² And it shall come to pass, while My glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with My hand until I have passed by. ²³ And I will take away My hand, and thou shalt see My back; but My face shall not be seen.'

⁵ And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. ⁶ And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed: 'The LORD, the LORD, God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth; ⁷ keeping mercy unto the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and unto the fourth generation.'

²⁴ Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it 'Adonai-shalom'; unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

O LORD, Thou hast searched me, and known me. ² Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, Thou understandest my thought afar off. ³ Thou measurest my going about and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. ⁴ For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, Thou knowest it altogether. ⁵ Thou hast hemmed me in behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me. ⁶ Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; too high, I cannot attain unto it. ⁷ Whither shall I go from Thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy presence? ⁸ If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there; if I make my bed in the nether-world, behold, Thou art there. ⁹ If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; ¹⁰ Even there would Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand would hold me. ¹¹ And if I say: 'Surely the darkness shall envelop me, and the light about me shall be night'; ¹² Even the darkness is not too dark for Thee, but the night shineth as the day; the darkness is even as the light.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and He maketh even all his paths.

⁷ And they turned back, and came to En-mishpat - the same is Kadesh - and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazazon-tamar.

³¹ Wherefore that place was called Beer-sheba; because there they swore both of them.

⁶² And Isaac came from the way of Beer-lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the land of the South.

¹¹ And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed Isaac his son; and Isaac dwelt by Beer-lahai-roi.

²⁶ And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

¹¹ And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

¹⁸ And Abraham said unto God: 'Oh that Ishmael might live before Thee!'

²⁵ And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. ²⁶ In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.

⁹ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne unto Abraham, making sport. ¹⁰ Wherefore she said unto Abraham: 'Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.' ¹¹ And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight on account of his son. ¹² And God said unto Abraham: 'Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah saith unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall seed be called to thee. ¹³ And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.' ¹⁴ And Abraham arose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away; and she departed, and strayed in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. ¹⁵ And the water in the bottle was spent, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. ¹⁶ And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow-shot; for she said: 'Let me not look upon the death of the child.' And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept. ¹⁷ And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her: 'What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. ¹⁸ Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him fast by thy hand; for I will make him a great nation.' ¹⁹ And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. ²⁰ And God was with the lad, and he grew; and he dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. ²¹ And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

⁹ And Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;

¹² Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bore unto Abraham.

²⁷ Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh.' And his brethren hearkened unto him.

²⁸ The sons of Abraham: Isaac, and Ishmael.

²² For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman. ²³ Howbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh, but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.
