¹ Why are times not laid up by the Almighty? And why do not they that know Him see His days? ² There are that remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed them. ³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge. ⁴ They turn the needy out of the way; the poor of the earth hide themselves together. ⁵ Behold, as wild asses in the wilderness they go forth to their work, seeking diligently for food; the desert yieldeth them bread for their children. ⁶ They cut his provender in the field; and they despoil the vineyard of the wicked. ⁷ They lie all night naked without clothing, and have no covering in the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter. ⁹ There are that pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor; ¹⁰ So that they go about naked without clothing, and being hungry they carry the sheaves; ¹¹ They make oil within the rows of these men; they tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst. ¹² From out of the populous city men groan, and the soul of the wounded crieth out; yet God imputeth it not for unseemliness. ¹³ These are of them that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof. ¹⁴ The murderer riseth with the light, to kill the poor and needy; and in the night he is as a thief. ¹⁵ The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying: 'No eye shall see me'; and he putteth a covering on his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses; they shut themselves up in the day-time; they know not the light. ¹⁷ For the shadow of death is to all of them as the morning; for they know the terrors of the shadow of death. ¹⁸ He is swift upon the face of the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth; he turneth not by the way of the vineyards. ¹⁹ Drought and heat consume the snow waters; so doth the nether-world those that have sinned. ²⁰ The womb forgetteth him; the worm feedeth sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and unrighteousness is broken as a tree. ²¹ He devoureth the barren that beareth not; and doeth not good to the widow. ²² He draweth away the mighty also by his power; he riseth up, and he trusteth not his own life. ²³ Though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth, yet His eyes are upon their ways. ²⁴ They are exalted for a little while, and they are gone; yea, they are brought low, they are gathered in as all others, and wither as the tops of the ears of corn. ²⁵ And if it be not so now, who will prove me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?

⁴ For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I blot out from off the face of the earth.'

¹⁷ And the LORD said: 'Shall I hide from Abraham that which I am doing;

²⁰ And the LORD said: 'Verily, the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and, verily, their sin is exceeding grievous. ²¹ I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto Me; and if not, I will know.'

¹⁰ (9:11) And they that know Thy name will put their trust in Thee; for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee.

¹⁵ (31:16) My times are in Thy hand; deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

¹⁶ And when I pondered how I might know this, it was wearisome in mine eyes; ¹⁷ Until I entered into the sanctuary of God, and considered their end. ¹⁸ Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors.

¹⁷ I said in my heart: 'The righteous and the wicked God will judge; for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.'

⁶ For to every matter there is a time and judgment; for the evil of man is great upon him. ⁷ For he knoweth not that which shall be; for even when it cometh to pass, who shall declare it unto him?

¹¹ I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. ¹² For man also knoweth not his time; as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, even so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

¹² For the LORD of hosts hath a day upon all that is proud and lofty, and upon all that is lifted up, and it shall be brought low;

²² The smallest shall become a thousand, and the least a mighty nation; I the LORD will hasten it in its time.

¹ Right wouldest Thou be, O LORD, were I to contend with Thee, yet will I reason with Thee: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? Wherefore are all they secure that deal very treacherously? ² Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root; they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit; Thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins. ³ But Thou, O LORD, knowest me, Thou seest me, and triest my heart toward Thee; pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

¹⁰ For the Lord GOD of hosts shall have on that day a day of vengeance, that He may avenge Him of His adversaries; and the sword shall devour and be satiate, and shall be made drunk with their blood; for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

²¹ And He changeth the times and the seasons; He removeth kings, and setteth up kings; He giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding;

³⁸ For as in the days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

²² For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. ²³ Woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days! for there shall be great distress upon the land, and wrath unto this people. ²⁴ And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

³ And this is life eternal, that they should know thee the only true God, and him whom thou didst send, even Jesus Christ.

⁷ And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority.

²⁶ and he made of one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation,

⁵ but after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up for thyself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God,

¹ But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you.

¹ But the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,

¹⁵ which in its own times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords,

³ And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you; whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction shall not slumber.

⁷ but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by his word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. ⁸ But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

¹⁴ Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set, in thine inheritance which thou shalt inherit, in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

¹⁷ Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour's landmark. And all the people shall say: Amen.

¹⁵ and the Sabeans made a raid, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'The Chaldeans set themselves in three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the snare gapeth for their substance.

²⁸ Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

¹⁰ Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless;

¹⁰ The princes of Judah are like them that remove the landmark; I will pour out My wrath upon them like water.

⁶ No man shall take the mill or the upper millstone to pledge; for he taketh a man's life to pledge.

¹⁰ When thou dost lend thy neighbour any manner of loan, thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge. ¹¹ Thou shalt stand without, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring forth the pledge without unto thee. ¹² And if he be a poor man, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge; ¹³ thou shalt surely restore to him the pledge when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his garment, and bless thee; and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.

¹⁷ Thou shalt not pervert the justice due to the stranger, or to the fatherless; nor take the widow's raiment to pledge. ¹⁸ But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence; therefore I command thee to do this thing. ¹⁹ When thou reapest thy harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go back to fetch it; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thy hands. ²⁰ When thou beatest thine olive-tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. ²¹ When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it after thee; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.

³ Here I am; witness against me before the LORD, and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? or whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.'

⁶ For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. ⁸ And as a mighty man, who hath the earth, and as a man of rank, who dwelleth in it, ⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

¹⁶ If I have withheld aught that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof -

¹⁴ The murderer riseth with the light, to kill the poor and needy; and in the night he is as a thief.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him.

²⁵ If I have not wept for him that was in trouble, and if my soul grieved not for the needy.

¹⁶ If I have withheld aught that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

¹ (41:1) For the Leader. A Psalm of David. (41:2) Happy is he that considereth the poor; the LORD will deliver him in the day of evil.

¹⁶ Because that he remembered not to do kindness, but persecuted the poor and needy man, and the broken in heart he was ready to slay.

¹⁶ One may oppress the poor, yet will their gain increase; one may give to the rich, yet will want come.

¹² When the righteous exult, there is great glory; but when the wicked rise, men must be sought for.

²⁸ When the wicked rise, men hide themselves; but when they perish, the righteous increase.

¹⁴ There is a generation whose teeth are as swords, and their great teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

² To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right of the poor of My people, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!

¹² hath wronged the poor and needy, hath taken by robbery, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

¹⁸ As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, committed robbery on his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he dieth for his iniquity.

²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have wronged the poor and needy, and have oppressed the stranger unlawfully.

⁷ That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the humble; and a man and his father go unto the same maid, to profane My holy name;

⁴ Hear this, O ye that would swallow the needy, and destroy the poor of the land, ⁵ Saying: 'When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? and the sabbath, that we may set forth corn? making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances of deceit; ⁶ That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the refuse of the corn?'

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity and work evil upon their beds! When the morning is light, they execute it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away; thus they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out; and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure, ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter. ⁶ Ye have condemned, ye have killed the righteous one, he doth not resist you.

¹² And he shall be a wild ass of a man: his hand shall be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the face of all his brethren.'

⁴⁰ And by thy sword shalt thou live, and thou shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt break loose, that thou shalt shake his yoke from off thy neck.

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure, in whatsoever God bringeth into their hand.

⁵ Who hath sent out the wild ass free? Or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass? ⁶ Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the salt land his dwelling-place. ⁷ He scorneth the tumult of the city, neither heareth he the shoutings of the driver.

²³ Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.

¹⁶ For they sleep not, except they have done evil; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

²⁴ A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind in her desire; her lust, who can hinder it? All they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

⁶ For they have made ready their heart like an oven, while they lie in wait; their baker sleepeth all the night, in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire.

⁹ For they are gone up to Assyria, like a wild ass alone by himself; Ephraim hath hired lovers.

¹² And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

³³ The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed away:

⁵¹ And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy ground, until thou be destroyed; that also shall not leave thee corn, wine, or oil, the increase of thy kine, or the young of thy flock, until he have caused thee to perish.

³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them; ⁴ and they encamped against them, and destroyed the produce of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass. ⁵ For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land to destroy it. ⁶ And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

¹⁵ Thou shalt sow, but shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but shalt not anoint thee with oil; and the vintage, but shalt not drink wine.

⁴⁰ Thus I was: in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep fled from mine eyes.

²⁶ (22:25) If thou at all take thy neighbour's garment to pledge, thou shalt restore it unto him by that the sun goeth down; ²⁷ (22:26) for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin; wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto Me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

⁶ For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

¹⁰ So that they go about naked without clothing, and being hungry they carry the sheaves;

¹⁹ If I have seen any wanderer in want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household; for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

⁷ Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him, and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

³¹ So the churches throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, being edified, and, walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, was multiplied.

² I sleep, but my heart waketh; Hark! my beloved knocketh: 'Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled; for my head is filled with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.'

⁵ They that did feed on dainties are desolate in the streets; they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves, and the holes of the earth.

¹ Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying: 'Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD; and the creditor is come to take unto him my two children to be bondmen.'

⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already; neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.'

⁷ That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the humble; and a man and his father go unto the same maid, to profane My holy name; ⁸ And they lay themselves down beside every altar upon clothes taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of them that have been fined.

¹¹ Therefore, because ye trample upon the poor, and take from him exactions of wheat; ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them, ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine thereof. ¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins; ye that afflict the just, that take a ransom, and that turn aside the needy in the gate.

⁴ Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn.

¹³ Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by injustice; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not his hire;

²³ And it came to pass in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. ²⁴ And God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

²⁷ (22:26) for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin; wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto Me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

¹⁶ And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD; and His soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

²³ If the scourge slay suddenly, He will mock at the calamity of the guiltless.

⁵ (12:6) 'For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise', saith the LORD; 'I will set him in safety at whom they puff.'

²¹ These things hast thou done, and should I have kept silence? Thou hadst thought that I was altogether such a one as thyself; but I will reprove thee, and set the cause before thine eyes.

²⁶ (69:27) For they persecute him whom Thou hast smitten; and they tell of the pain of those whom Thou hast wounded.

²² For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

¹ But I returned and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun; and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power, but they had no comforter.

¹¹ Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil; ¹² because a sinner doeth evil a hundred times, and prolongeth his days - though yet I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, that fear before Him;

⁵ Now therefore, what do I here, saith the LORD, seeing that My people is taken away for nought? They that rule over them do howl, saith the LORD, and My name continually all the day is blasphemed.

¹⁷ Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say: 'Wherein have we wearied Him?' In that ye say: 'Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and He delighteth in them; or where is the God of justice?'

¹⁵ And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they try God, and are delivered.'

⁴ Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? ⁵ but after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up for thyself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God,

¹⁵ And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation, even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you,

¹¹ My foot hath held fast to His steps, His way have I kept, and turned not aside. ¹² I have not gone back from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured up the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness; they know not at what they stumble.

⁴⁷ { And that servant, who knew his lord's will, and made not ready, nor did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes, ⁴⁸ but he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. And to whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required; and to whom they commit much, of him will they ask the more.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. ²⁰ For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

³¹ Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, then are ye truly my disciples,

⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

³⁹ And Jesus said, For judgment came I into this world, that they that see not may see, and that they that see may become blind. ⁴⁰ Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said unto him, Are we also blind? ⁴¹ Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye would have no sin; but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

³⁵ Jesus therefore said unto them, Yet a little while is the light among you. Walk while ye have the light, that darkness overtake you not; and he that walketh in the darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

⁴⁰ He hath blinded their eyes, and he hardened their heart, Lest they should see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart, And should turn, And I should heal them.

⁶ If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered, and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

²² If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ He that hateth me hateth my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which none other did, they had not had sin; but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

³² who, knowing the ordinance of God, that they that practice such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but also consent with them that practice them.

¹⁷ Behold, thou bearest the name of a Jew, and restest upon the law, and gloriest in God, ¹⁸ and knowest his will, and approvest the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law, ¹⁹ and art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them that are in darkness, ²⁰ a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth, ²¹ thou therefore that teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? ²² thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou rob temples? ²³ thou who gloriest in the law, through thy transgression of the law dishonorest thou God? ²⁴ For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you, even as it is written.

¹¹ There is none that understandeth, There is none that seeketh after God, ¹² They have all turned aside, they are together become unprofitable, There is none that doeth good, no, not, so much as one: ¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre, With their tongues they have used deceit; The poison of asps is under their lips: ¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: ¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood, ¹⁶ Destruction and misery are in their ways, ¹⁷ And the way of peace have they not known:

¹⁰ and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish, because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ¹¹ And for this cause God sendeth them a working of error, that they should believe a lie: ¹² that they all might be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

¹⁷ To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

²⁰ For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first. ²¹ For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us, for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they all are not of us.

⁶ And angels that kept not their own principality, but left their proper habitation, he hath kept in everlasting bonds under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

¹⁴ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying: 'Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.' ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were. ¹⁷ And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab; and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

⁸ He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages; in secret places doth he slay the innocent; his eyes are on the watch for the helpless. ⁹ He lieth in wait in a secret place as a lion in his lair, he lieth in wait to catch the poor; he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him up in his net. ¹⁰ He croucheth, he boweth down, and the helpless fall into his mighty claws.

³⁹ But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through.

⁷ Be not ye therefore partakers with them, ⁸ For ye were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord; walk as children of light ⁹ (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), ¹⁰ proving what is well-pleasing unto the Lord, ¹¹ and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them,

² For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

³ Remember therefore how thou hast received and didst hear, and keep it, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come upon thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

¹⁴ And she put off from her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the entrance of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she was not given unto him to wife. ¹⁵ When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she had covered her face.

¹⁴ (20:13) Thou shalt not commit adultery.

⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness; and she returned unto her house. ⁵ And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said: 'I am with child.' ⁶ And David sent to Joab,saying: 'Send me Uriah the Hittite.' And Joab sent Uriah to David. ⁷ And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered. ⁸ And David said to Uriah: 'Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet.' And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of food from the king. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. ¹⁰ And when they had told David, saying: 'Uriah went not down unto his house', David said unto Uriah: 'Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thy house?' ¹¹ And Uriah said unto David: 'The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.' ¹² And David said to Uriah: 'Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart.' So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. ¹³ And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk; and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

¹² For thou didst it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.'

¹³ And thou sayest: 'What doth God know? Can He judge through the dark cloud? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering to Him, that He seeth not; and He walketh in the circuit of heaven.'

¹¹ He hath said in his heart: 'God hath forgotten; He hideth His face; He will never see.'

¹⁸ When thou sawest a thief, thou hadst company with him, and with adulterers was thy portion.

¹¹ And they say: 'How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?'

⁷ And they say: 'The LORD will not see, neither will the God of Jacob give heed.'

³² He that committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; he doeth it that would destroy his own soul. ³³ Wounds and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall not be wiped away. ³⁴ For jealousy is the rage of a man, and he will not spare in the day of vengeance. ³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

⁹ In the twilight, in the evening of the day, in the blackness of night and the darkness. ¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of a harlot, and wily of heart.

¹² Then said He unto me: 'Son of man, hast thou seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in his chambers of imagery? for they say: The LORD seeth us not, the LORD hath forsaken the land.'

⁹ Then said He unto me: 'The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of wresting of judgment; for they say: The LORD hath forsaken the land, and the LORD seeth not.

² (22:1) If a thief be found breaking in, and be smitten so that he dieth, there shall be no bloodguiltiness for him. ³ (22:2) If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be bloodguiltiness for him - he shall make restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

¹³ These are of them that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof.

¹² Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days began, and caused the dayspring to know its place; ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it?

⁵ Dig thou through the wall in their sight, and carry out thereby. ⁶ In their sight shalt thou bear it upon thy shoulder, and carry it forth in the darkness; thou shalt cover thy face, that thou see not the ground; for I have set thee for a sign unto the house of Israel.' ⁷ And I did so as I was commanded: I brought forth my stuff by day, as stuff for exile, and in the even I digged through the wall with my hand; I carried out in the darkness, and bore it upon my shoulder in their sight.

¹² And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder, and go forth in the darkness; they shall dig through the wall to carry out thereby; he shall cover his face, that he see not the ground with his eyes.

¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal;

⁴³ But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through.

²⁰ For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

¹¹ and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them, ¹² for the things which are done by them in secret it is a shame even to speak of. ¹³ But all things when they are reproved are made manifest by the light; for everything that is made manifest is light.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own; let a cloud dwell upon it; let all that maketh black the day terrify it.

²⁶ As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets;

¹⁰ For we must all be made manifest before the judgment-seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he hath done, whether it be good or bad. ¹¹ Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest unto God, and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.

¹⁶ and they say to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: ¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath is come, and who is able to stand?

¹⁶ Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. ¹⁷ Cursed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough. ¹⁸ Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the young of thy flock. ¹⁹ Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out. ²⁰ The LORD will send upon thee cursing, discomfiture, and rebuke, in all that thou puttest thy hand unto to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the evil of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken Me.

²⁶ They are passed away as the swift ships; as the vulture that swoopeth on the prey.

¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream;

⁷ (58:8) Let them melt away as water that runneth apace; when he aimeth his arrows, let them be as though they were cut off.

²² (69:23) Let their table before them become a snare; and when they are in peace, let it become a trap.

¹⁸ Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh, so, O Lord, when Thou arousest Thyself, Thou wilt despise their semblance.

³³ The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked; but He blesseth the habitation of the righteous.

¹⁰ Overflow thy land as the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish! there is no girdle any more.

² If ye will not hearken, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto My name, saith the LORD of hosts, then will I send the curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yea, I curse them, because ye do not lay it to heart.

¹⁵ My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that overflow, ¹⁶ Which are black by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow hideth itself; ¹⁷ What time they wax warm, they vanish, when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.

¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, and peacefully they go down to the grave.

²³ One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet;

³² For he is borne to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley are sweet unto him, and all men draw after him, as there were innumerable before him. ³⁴ How then comfort ye me in vain? And as for your answers, there remaineth only faithlessness?

¹⁴ (49:15) Like sheep they are appointed for the nether-world; death shall be their shepherd; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their form shall be for the nether-world to wear away, that there be no habitation for it.

⁸ (58:9) Let them be as a snail which melteth and passeth away; like the untimely births of a woman, that have not seen the sun. ⁹ (58:10) Before your pots can feel the thorns, He will sweep it away with a whirlwind, the raw and the burning alike.

² (68:3) As smoke is driven away, so drive them away; as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

³² The wicked is thrust down in his misfortune; but the righteous, even when he is brought to death, hath hope.

⁴ For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion. ⁵ For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. ⁶ As well their love, as their hatred and their envy, is long ago perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died, and was buried.

⁷ For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease. ⁸ Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground; ⁹ Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and put forth boughs like a plant. ¹⁰ But man dieth, and lieth low; yea, man perisheth, and where is he?

¹⁴ If I have said to corruption: 'Thou art my father', to the worm: 'Thou art my mother, and my sister';

¹⁶ His roots shall dry up beneath, and above shall his branch wither. ¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name abroad.

²⁶ And when after my skin this is destroyed, then without my flesh shall I see God;

⁷ The memory of the righteous shall be for a blessing; but the name of the wicked shall rot.

¹⁰ And so I saw the wicked buried, and they entered into their rest; but they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city; this also is vanity.

¹⁴ The dead live not, the shades rise not; to that end hast Thou punished and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

¹⁴ (4:11) He cried aloud, and said thus: Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit; let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches.

¹⁰ And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

⁶ And her rival vexed her sore, to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she vexed her; therefore she wept, and would not eat.

⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge.

¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

¹⁶ If I have withheld aught that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof - ¹⁸ Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother's womb.

⁸ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus: 'There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws are diverse from those of every people; neither keep they the king's laws; therefore it profiteth not the king to suffer them. ⁹ If it please the king, let it be written that they be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those that have the charge of the king's business, to bring it into the king's treasuries.' ¹⁰ And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews' enemy.

⁴ (6:5) Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. ⁵ (6:6) Then said these men: 'We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him in the matter of the law of his God.' ⁶ (6:7) Then these presidents and satraps came tumultuously to the king, and said thus unto him: 'King Darius, live for ever! ⁷ (6:8) All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the ministers and the governors, have consulted together that the king should establish a statute, and make a strong interdict, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. ⁸ (6:9) Now, O king, establish the interdict, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.' ⁹ (6:10) Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the interdict.

¹² Upon this Pilate sought to release him; but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar's friend; every one that maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. ¹³ When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment-seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. ¹⁴ Now it was the Preparation of the passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he saith unto the Jews, Behold, your King! ¹⁵ They therefore cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him! Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. ¹⁶ Then therefore he delivered him unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

¹³ And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits, like frogs: ¹⁴ for they are spirits of demons, working signs, which go forth unto the kings of the whole world, to gather them together unto the war of that great day of God, the Almighty.

² with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and they that dwell in the earth were made drunken with the wine of her fornication.

¹¹ For He knoweth base men; and when He seeth iniquity, will He not then consider it?

¹³ Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God, and say in his heart: 'Thou wilt not require'? ¹⁴ Thou hast seen; for Thou beholdest trouble and vexation, to requite them with Thy hand; unto Thee the helpless committeth himself; Thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.

⁴ The LORD is in His holy temple, the LORD, His throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids try, the children of men. ⁵ The LORD trieth the righteous; but the wicked and him that loveth violence His soul hateth.

³ For I was envious at the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no pangs at their death, and their body is sound. ⁵ In the trouble of man they are not; neither are they plagued like men. ⁶ Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; violence covereth them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand forth from fatness; they are gone beyond the imaginations of their heart. ⁸ They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression; they speak as if there were none on high. ⁹ They have set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore His people return hither; and waters of fullness are drained out by them. ¹¹ And they say: 'How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?' ¹² Behold, such are the wicked; and they that are always at ease increase riches.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and He maketh even all his paths.

³ The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch upon the evil and the good.

²¹ If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink; ²² For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD will reward thee. ²³ The north wind bringeth forth rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

⁸ (5:7) If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and the violent perverting of justice and righteousness in the state, marvel not at the matter; for one higher than the high watcheth, and there are higher than they.

¹¹ Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil;

⁸ For he saith: 'Are not my princes all of them kings? ⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand hath reached the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did exceed them of Jerusalem and of Samaria; ¹¹ Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?'

¹² 'Come ye, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to-morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.'

⁷ The LORD hath sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their works.

² Though they dig into the nether-world, thence shall My hand take them; and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down.

¹³ Thou that art of eyes too pure to behold evil, and that canst not look on mischief, wherefore lookest Thou, when they deal treacherously, and holdest Thy peace, when the wicked swalloweth up the man that is more righteous than he;

¹⁶ And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; ¹⁷ and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do; I will pull down my barns, and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

⁴⁵ But if that servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming, and shall begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken,

³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child, and they shall in no wise escape.

²³ And I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am he that searcheth the reins and hearts; and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

²² They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the tent of the wicked shall be no more.

²¹ His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he regardeth them not.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment?

¹⁰ And yet a little while, and the wicked is no more; yea, thou shalt look well at his place, and he is not.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a leafy tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not; yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors.

⁷ (92:8) When the wicked spring up as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they may be destroyed for ever.

⁵ And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the standing corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; yea, it shall be as when one gleaneth ears in the valley of Rephaim. ⁶ Yet there shall be left therein gleanings, as at the beating of an olive-tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the branches of the fruitful tree, saith the LORD, the God of Israel.

¹¹ For the sun ariseth with the scorching wind, and withereth the grass; and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth; so also shall the rich man fade away in his goings.

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted, and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days.

¹⁴ And I saw, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud I saw one sitting like unto a son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. ¹⁵ And another angel came out from the temple, crying with a great voice to him that sat on the cloud, Send forth thy sickle, and reap; for the hour to reap is come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe. ¹⁶ And he that sat on the cloud cast his sickle upon the earth, and the earth was reaped. ¹⁷ Another angel came out from the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. ¹⁸ And another angel came out from the altar, that hath power over fire, and he called with a great cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Send forth thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe. ¹⁹ And the angel cast his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vintage of the earth, and cast it into the winepress, the great winepress, of the wrath of God. ²⁰ And the winepress was trodden without the city, and there came out blood from the winepress, even unto the bridles of the horses, as far as a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

²⁸ Now therefore be pleased to look upon me; for surely I shall not lie to your face.

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if it be not He, who then is it?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be accounted right? ³ Thy boastings have made men hold their peace, and thou hast mocked, with none to make thee ashamed;

² Should a wise man make answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

⁴ Surely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, neither shall my tongue utter deceit;
