² Shall he that reproveth contend with the Almighty? He that argueth with God, let him answer it.

¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not perish at birth? ¹² Why did the knees receive me? And wherefore the breasts, that I should suck?

²⁰ Wherewith is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul -

²³ To a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

¹² Am I a sea, or a sea-monster, that Thou settest a watch over me?

¹⁹ How long wilt Thou not look away from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I unto Thee, O Thou watcher of men? Why hast Thou set me as a mark for Thee, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ And why dost Thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? For now shall I lie down in the dust; and Thou wilt seek me, but I shall not be.

³ If one should desire to contend with Him, he could not answer Him one of a thousand.

¹⁷ He that would break me with a tempest, and multiply my wounds without cause; ¹⁸ That would not suffer me to take my breath, but fill me with bitterness.

³² For He is not a man, as I am, that I should answer Him, that we should come together in judgment. ³³ There is no arbiter betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both. ³⁴ Let Him take His rod away from me, and let not His terror make me afraid; ³⁵ Then would I speak, and not fear Him; for I am not so with myself.

³ Is it good unto Thee that Thou shouldest oppress, that Thou shouldest despise the work of Thy hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked? ⁴ Hast Thou eyes of flesh? or seest Thou as man seeth? ⁵ Are Thy days as the days of man, or Thy years as a man's days, ⁶ That Thou inquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin, ⁷ Although Thou knowest that I shall not be condemned; and there is none that can deliver out of Thy hand?

¹⁴ If I sin, then Thou markest me, and Thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity. ¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet shall I not lift up my head - being filled with ignominy and looking upon mine affliction. ¹⁶ And if it exalt itself, Thou huntest me as a lion; and again Thou showest Thyself marvellous upon me. ¹⁷ Thou renewest Thy witnesses against me, and increasest Thine indignation upon me; host succeeding host against me.

²¹ Withdraw Thy hand far from me; and let not Thy terror make me afraid. ²² Then call Thou, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer Thou me. ²³ How many are mine iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin. ²⁴ Wherefore hidest Thou Thy face, and holdest me for Thine enemy? ²⁵ Wilt Thou harass a driven leaf? And wilt Thou pursue the dry stubble? ²⁶ That Thou shouldest write bitter things against me, and make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth. ²⁷ Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; Thou drawest Thee a line about the soles of my feet;

¹⁶ But now Thou numberest my steps, Thou dost not even wait for my sin; ¹⁷ My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and Thou heapest up mine iniquity.

¹¹ God delivereth me to the ungodly, and casteth me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, and He broke me asunder; yea, He hath taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces; He hath also set me up for His mark. ¹³ His archers compass me round about, He cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; He poureth out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He breaketh me with breach upon breach; He runneth upon me like a giant. ¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and have laid my horn in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is reddened with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; ¹⁷ Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no resting-place. ¹⁹ Even now, behold, my Witness is in heaven, and He that testifieth of me is on high. ²⁰ Mine inward thoughts are my intercessors, mine eye poureth out tears unto God; ²¹ That He would set aright a man contending with God, as a son of man setteth aright his neighbour!

⁶ Know now that God hath subverted my cause, and hath compassed me with His net. ⁷ Behold, I cry out: 'Violence!' but I am not heard; I cry aloud, but there is no justice. ⁸ He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and hath set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He hath broken me down on every side, and I am gone; and my hope hath He plucked up like a tree. ¹¹ He hath also kindled His wrath against me, and He counteth me unto Him as one of His adversaries.

² As God liveth, who hath taken away my right; and the Almighty, who hath dealt bitterly with me;

²¹ Thou art turned to be cruel to me; with the might of Thy hand Thou hatest me.

¹³ Why hast thou striven against Him? seeing that He will not answer any of his words.

¹⁰ Whatsoever cometh into being, the name thereof was given long ago, and it is foreknown what man is; neither can he contend with Him that is mightier than he.

¹⁴ With whom took He counsel, and who instructed Him, and taught Him in the path of right, and taught Him knowledge, and made Him to know the way of discernment?

⁹ Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker, as a potsherd with the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him that fashioned it: 'What makest thou?' Or: 'Thy work, it hath no hands'? ¹⁰ Woe unto him that saith unto his father: 'Wherefore begettest thou?' Or to a woman: 'Wherefore travailest thou?' ¹¹ Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker: Ask Me of the things that are to come; concerning My sons, and concerning the work of My hands, command ye Me.

⁸ He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand up together; who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.

² 'What mean ye, that ye use this proverb in the land of Israel, saying: The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?

¹¹ And when they received it, they murmured against the householder,

¹⁹ Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he still find fault? For who withstandeth his will? ²⁰ Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus? ²¹ Or hath not the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor? ²² What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering vessels of wrath fitted unto destruction: ²³ and that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he afore prepared unto glory,

³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor? ³⁵ or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? ³⁶ For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.

¹⁶ For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

²² Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
