¹ but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. ² And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him, and he sat down, and taught them. ³ And the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst, ⁴ they say unto him, Teacher, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. ⁵ Now in our law Moses commanded to stone such; what then sayest thou of her? ⁶ And this they said, trying him, that they might have an accusation against him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. ⁷ But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. ⁸ And again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground. ⁹ And they, when they heard it, being convicted by the conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the eldest, even unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman being in the midst. ¹⁰ And when Jesus lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? did no man condemn thee? ¹¹ And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee; go thy way, from henceforth sin no more. ¹² Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life. ¹³ The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself, thy witness is not true. ¹⁴ Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true, for I know whence I came, and whither I go, but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go. ¹⁵ Ye judge after the flesh, I judge no man. ¹⁶ Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. ¹⁷ Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true. ¹⁸ I am he that beareth witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. ¹⁹ They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father; if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also. ²⁰ These words spake he in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; and no man took him, because his hour was not yet come. ²¹ He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; whither I go, ye cannot come. ²² The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come? ²³ And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world. ²⁴ I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins; for except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. ²⁵ They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? Jesus said unto them, Even that which I have also spoken unto you from the beginning. ²⁶ I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you; howbeit he that sent me is true, and the things which I heard from him, these speak I unto the world. ²⁷ They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father. ²⁸ Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I speak these things. ²⁹ And he that sent me is with me, he hath not left me alone, for I do always the things that are pleasing to him. ³⁰ As he spake these things, many believed on him. ³¹ Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, then are ye truly my disciples, ³² and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. ³³ They answered unto him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man; how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? ³⁴ Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin. ³⁵ And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever; the son abideth for ever. ³⁶ If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. ³⁷ I know that ye are Abraham's seed; yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you. ³⁸ I speak the things which I have seen with my Father; and ye also do the things which ye have seen with your father. ³⁹ They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. ⁴⁰ But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God; this did not Abraham. ⁴¹ Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication, we have one Father, even God. ⁴² Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me; for I came forth and am come from God, for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me. ⁴³ Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word. ⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father thereof. ⁴⁵ But because I say the truth, ye believe me not. ⁴⁶ Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me? ⁴⁷ He that is of God heareth the words of God; for this cause ye hear them not, because ye are not of God. ⁴⁸ The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon? ⁴⁹ Jesus answered, I have not a demon, but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me. ⁵⁰ But I seek not mine own glory; there is one that seeketh and judgeth. ⁵¹ Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death. ⁵² The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death. ⁵³ Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom makest thou thyself? ⁵⁴ Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom ye say, that he is our God, ⁵⁵ and ye have not known him; but I know him, and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar; but I know him, and keep his word. ⁵⁶ Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it, and was glad. ⁵⁷ The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? ⁵⁸ Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am. ⁵⁹ They took up stones therefore to cast at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

³ but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said: Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.' ⁴ And the serpent said unto the woman: 'Ye shall not surely die; ⁵ for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.' ⁶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. ⁷ And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves girdles.

¹⁵ And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; they shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise their heel.'

⁸ And Cain spoke unto Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. ⁹ And the LORD said unto Cain: 'Where is Abel thy brother?' And he said: 'I know not; am I my brother's keeper?'

¹³ And He said unto Abram: 'Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

¹¹ And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great; so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

¹⁰ Wherefore she said unto Abraham: 'Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.'

¹⁸ and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast hearkened to My voice.'

²¹ And they said one to another: 'We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.' ²² And Reuben answered them, saying: 'Spoke I not unto you, saying: Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore also, behold, his blood is required.'

⁹ Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, thou art gone up. He stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as a lioness; who shall rouse him up?

¹³ And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour. ¹⁴ And they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field; in all their service, wherein they made them serve with rigour.

¹⁴ And God said unto Moses: 'I AM THAT I AM'; and He said: 'Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel: I AM hath sent me unto you.'

²² And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh: Thus saith the LORD: Israel is My son, My first-born.

¹⁰ And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

¹⁶ And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him; as well the stranger, as the home-born, when he blasphemeth the Name, shall be put to death.

⁴² For they are My servants, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as bondmen.

³ Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men that were upon the face of the earth. -

²² surely all those men that have seen My glory, and My signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to proof these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice;

²⁸ And Moses said: 'Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works, and that I have not done them of mine own mind. ²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, and be visited after the visitation of all men, then the LORD hath not sent Me. ³⁰ But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.'

¹ Ye are the children of the LORD your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead.

¹⁸ Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, tribe by tribe; and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.

⁶ At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is to die be put to death; at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.

²¹ then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die; because she hath wrought a wanton deed in Israel, to play the harlot in her father's house; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee. ²² If a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die, the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so shalt thou put away the evil from Israel. ²³ If there be a damsel that is a virgin betrothed unto a man, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; ²⁴ then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die: the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife; so thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of thee.

⁶ Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not He thy father that hath gotten thee? hath He not made thee, and established thee?

¹⁸ And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repented the LORD because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and crushed them.

⁸ Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and He gave them over into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram-naharaim; and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

³ And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

¹⁴ If ye will fear the LORD, and serve Him, and hearken unto His voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, and both ye and also the king that reigneth over you be followers of the LORD your God -;

⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel: 'Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him; for it is not as man seeth: for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.'

⁴⁴ The king said moreover to Shimei: 'Thou knowest all the wickedness which thy heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father; therefore the LORD shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head.

¹⁸ And she said unto Elijah: 'What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?'

¹⁰ As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee; and when they said: He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

¹⁰ and set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them bear witness against him, saying: Thou didst curse God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he die.'

¹⁶ And they said unto him: 'Behold now, there are with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master; lest peradventure the spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley.' And he said: 'Ye shall not send.' ¹⁷ And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said: 'Send.' They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not.

¹⁸ And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said: 'Smite this people, I pray Thee, with blindness.' And He smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. ¹⁹ And Elisha said unto them: 'This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek.' And he led them to Samaria. ²⁰ And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said: 'LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see.' And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

⁹ For we are bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the ruins thereof, and to give us a fence in Judah and in Jerusalem.

⁴ There were also that said: 'We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and our vineyards. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already; neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.' ⁶ And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. ⁷ Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them: 'Ye lend upon pledge, every one to his brother.' And I held a great assembly against them. ⁸ And I said unto them: 'We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that sold themselves unto the heathen; and would ye nevertheless sell your brethren, and should they sell themselves unto us?' Then held they their peace, and found never a word.

¹⁴ Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. ¹⁵ But the former governors that were before me laid burdens upon the people, and took of them for bread and wine above forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants lorded over the people; but so did not I, because of the fear of God. ¹⁶ Yea, also I set hand to the work of this wall, neither bought we any land; and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work. ¹⁷ Moreover there were at my table of the Jews and the rulers a hundred and fifty men, beside those that came unto us from among the nations that were round about us. ¹⁸ Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep, also fowls were prepared for me; and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine; yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor, because the service was heavy upon this people. ¹⁹ Remember unto me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.

²⁷ Therefore Thou didst deliver them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them; and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto Thee, Thou heardest from heaven; and according to Thy manifold mercies Thou gavest them saviours who might save them out of the hand of their adversaries. ²⁸ But after they had rest, they did evil again before Thee; therefore didst Thou leave them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them; yet when they returned, and cried unto Thee, many times didst Thou hear from heaven, and deliver them according to Thy mercies;

³⁶ Behold, we are servants this day, and as for the land that Thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it. ³⁷ And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom Thou hast set over us because of our sins; also they have power over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.'

¹¹ But put forth Thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, surely he will blaspheme Thee to Thy face.'

⁴ And Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. ⁵ But put forth Thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, surely he will blaspheme Thee to Thy face.' ⁶ And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Behold, he is in thy hand; only spare his life.'

¹² He frustrateth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands can perform nothing substantial. ¹³ He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment?

¹¹ His bones are full of his youth, but it shall lie down with him in the dust.

²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him.

²⁸ So He redeemeth his soul from going into the pit, and his life beholdeth the light.

³¹ For hath any said unto God: 'I have borne chastisement, though I offend not;

⁶ 'Truly it is I that have established My king upon Zion, My holy mountain.' ⁷ I will tell of the decree: the LORD said unto me: 'Thou art My son, this day have I begotten thee. ⁸ Ask of Me, and I will give the nations for thine inheritance, and the ends of the earth for thy possession. ⁹ Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.' ¹⁰ Now therefore, O ye kings, be wise; be admonished, ye judges of the earth. ¹¹ Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. ¹² Do homage in purity, lest He be angry, and ye perish in the way, when suddenly His wrath is kindled. Happy are all they that take refuge in Him.

¹⁵ (9:16) The nations are sunk down in the pit that they made; in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. ¹⁶ (9:17) The LORD hath made Himself known, He hath executed judgment, the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah

⁴ As for the doings of men, by the word of Thy lips I have kept me from the ways of the violent.

²⁸ (18:29) For Thou dost light my lamp; the LORD my God doth lighten my darkness.

¹³ (19:14) Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins, that they may not have dominion over me; then shall I be faultless, and I shall be clear from great transgression.

⁶ (22:7) But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

⁵ Guide me in Thy truth, and teach me; for Thou art the God of my salvation; for Thee do I wait all the day.

⁸ Good and upright is the LORD; therefore doth He instruct sinners in the way. ⁹ He guideth The humble in justice; and He teacheth the humble His way.

¹⁸ (31:19) Let the lying lips be dumb, which speak arrogantly against the righteous, with pride and contempt.

¹² The wicked plotteth against the righteous, and gnasheth at him with his teeth.

³² The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him.

¹⁴ (40:15) Let them be ashamed and abashed together that seek after my soul to sweep it away; let them be turned backward and brought to confusion that delight in my hurt.

⁶ (45:7) Thy throne given of God is for ever and ever; a sceptre of equity is the sceptre of thy kingdom. ⁷ (45:8) Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated wickedness; therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

¹³ Let them be ashamed and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and confusion that seek my hurt.

¹ A Psalm of Solomon. Give the king Thy judgments, O God, and Thy righteousness unto the king's son; ² That he may judge Thy people with righteousness, and Thy poor with justice.

¹⁸ Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh, so, O Lord, when Thou arousest Thyself, Thou wilt despise their semblance.

⁴⁸ (89:49) What man is he that liveth and shall not see death, that shall deliver his soul from the power of the grave? Selah

²⁰ Shall the seat of wickedness have fellowship with Thee, which frameth mischief by statute? ²¹ They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood.

¹¹ Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

⁹ Before the LORD, for He is come to judge the earth; He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

⁴ The strength also of the king who loveth justice - Thou hast established equity, Thou hast executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.

¹ A Psalm of David. The LORD saith unto my lord: 'Sit thou at My right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.' ² The rod of Thy strength the LORD will send out of Zion: 'Rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.' ³ Thy people offer themselves willingly in the day of thy warfare; in adornments of holiness, from the womb of the dawn, thine is the dew of thy youth. ⁴ The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent: 'Thou art a priest for ever after the manner of Melchizedek.'

³² I will run the way of Thy commandments, for Thou dost enlarge my heart.

⁴⁵ And I will walk at ease, for I have sought Thy precepts;

¹³³ Order my footsteps by Thy word; and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.

⁴ Our soul is full sated with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud oppressors.

²³ Turn you at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

²⁹ For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD;

¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and lay up my commandments with thee; ² So that thou make thine ear attend unto wisdom, and thy heart incline to discernment; ³ Yea, if thou call for understanding, and lift up thy voice for discernment; ⁴ If thou seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom, out of His mouth cometh knowledge and discernment; ⁷ He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright, He is a shield to them that walk in integrity;

¹⁸ But the path of the righteous is as the light of dawn, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

²² His own iniquities shall ensnare the wicked, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin.

²² The LORD made me as the beginning of His way, the first of His works of old. ²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. ²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. ²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth; ²⁶ While as yet He had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the beginning of the dust of the world. ²⁷ When He established the heavens, I was there; when He set a circle upon the face of the deep, ²⁸ When He made firm the skies above, when the fountains of the deep showed their might, ²⁹ When He gave to the sea His decree, that the waters should not transgress His commandment, when He appointed the foundations of the earth; ³⁰ Then I was by Him, as a nursling; and I was daily all delight, playing always before Him,

³⁶ But he that misseth me wrongeth his own soul; all they that hate me love death.'

⁷ When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish, and the hope of strength perisheth.

¹⁸ There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword; but the tongue of the wise is health.

³² The wicked is thrust down in his misfortune; but the righteous, even when he is brought to death, hath hope.

²⁷ It is not good to eat much honey; so for men to search out their own glory is not glory.

⁴ Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. ⁵ Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

¹⁷ He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife not his own, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

⁵ Evil men understand not justice; but they that seek the LORD understand all things.

¹³ He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper; but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy.

⁷ A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

²² for oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

¹⁰ Whatsoever thy hand attaineth to do by thy strength, that do; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

⁷ Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon; for why should I be as one that veileth herself beside the flocks of thy companions? ⁸ If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock and feed thy kids, beside the shepherds' tents.

¹⁶ Wash you, make you clean, put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes, cease to do evil; ¹⁷ Learn to do well; seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. ¹⁸ Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

³ And many peoples shall go and say: 'Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths.' For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

⁹ And He said: 'Go, and tell this people: hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.

² (9:1) The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

⁶ (9:5) For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called Pele- joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom; ⁷ (9:6) That the government may be increased, and of peace there be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it through justice and through righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts doth perform this.

² And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. ³ And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD; and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither decide after the hearing of his ears; ⁴ But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the land; and he shall smite the land with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. ⁵ And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

²¹ And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying: 'This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.'

¹ Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and as for princes, they shall rule in justice. ² And a man shall be as in a hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as by the watercourses in a dry place, as in the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

⁸ And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those; the wayfaring men, yea fools, shall not err therein.

¹¹ Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded; they that strove with thee shall be as nothing, and shall perish. ¹² Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee; they that warred against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought.

Who is blind as he that is wholehearted, and blind as the LORD'S servant? ²⁰ Seeing many things, thou observest not; opening the ears, he heareth not. ²¹ The LORD was pleased, for His righteousness' sake, to make the teaching great and glorious.

¹³ Yea, since the day was I am He, and there is none that can deliver out of My hand; I will work, and who can reverse it?

⁶ Thus saith the LORD, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer the LORD of hosts: I am the first, and I am the last, and beside Me there is no God.

⁸ Fear ye not, neither be afraid; have I not announced unto thee of old, and declared it? And ye are My witnesses. Is there a God beside Me? Yea, there is no Rock; I know not any.

⁴ The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of them that are taught, that I should know how to sustain with words him that is weary; He wakeneth morning by morning, He wakeneth mine ear to hear as they that are taught. ⁵ The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away backward. ⁶ I gave my back to the smiters, and my checks to them that plucked off the hair; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. ⁷ For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore have I not been confounded; therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. ⁸ He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand up together; who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. ⁹ Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? Behold, they all shall wax old as a garment, the moth shall eat them up. ¹⁰ Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of His servant? though he walketh in darkness, and hath no light, let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.

³ He was despised, and forsaken of men, a man of pains, and acquainted with disease, and as one from whom men hide their face: he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

⁶ Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near;

Are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood, ⁵ Ye that inflame yourselves among the terebinths, under every leafy tree; that slay the children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks? ⁶ Among the smooth stones of the valley is thy portion; they, they are thy lot; even to them hast thou poured a drink-offering, thou hast offered a meal-offering. Should I pacify Myself for these things? ⁷ Upon a high and lofty mountain hast thou set thy bed; thither also wentest thou up to offer sacrifice.

¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind, yea, as they that have no eyes do we grope; we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; we are in dark places like the dead.

¹ Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. ² For, behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the peoples; but upon thee the LORD will arise, and His glory shall be seen upon thee. ³ And nations shall walk at thy light, and kings at the brightness of thy rising.

¹ The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to bring good tidings unto the humble; He hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the eyes to them that are bound;

¹⁶ For Thou art our Father; for Abraham knoweth us not, and Israel doth not acknowledge us; Thou, O LORD, art our Father, our Redeemer from everlasting is Thy name.

⁸ (64:7) But now, O LORD, Thou art our Father; we are the clay, and Thou our potter, and we all are the work of Thy hand.

²⁰ There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man, that hath not filled his days; for the youngest shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner being a hundred years old shall be accursed.

⁵ Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at His word: Your brethren that hate you, that cast you out for My name's sake, have said: 'Let the LORD be glorified, that we may gaze upon your joy', but they shall be ashamed.

¹⁹ But I said: 'How would I put thee among the sons, and give thee a pleasant land, the goodliest heritage of the nations!' And I said: 'Thou shalt call Me, My father; and shalt not turn away from following Me.'

²² For My people is foolish, they know Me not; they are sottish children, and they have no understanding; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

¹⁰ To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is dull, and they cannot attend; behold, the word of the LORD is become unto them a reproach, they have no delight in it.

¹⁶ Thus saith the LORD: Stand ye in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said: 'We will not walk therein.'

³ (9:2) And they bend their tongue, their bow of falsehood; and they are grown mighty in the land, but not for truth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and Me they know not, saith the LORD.

¹³ Thou hope of Israel, the LORD! All that forsake Thee shall be ashamed; they that depart from Thee shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

⁵ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous shoot, and he shall reign as king and prosper, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. ⁶ In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The LORD is our righteousness.

²⁹ Is not My word like as fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?

⁷ And I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God; for they shall return unto Me with their whole heart.

³ From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even unto this day, these three and twenty years, the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, speaking betimes and often; but ye have not hearkened.

²⁰ Is Ephraim a darling son unto Me? Is he a child that is dandled? For as often as I speak of him, I do earnestly remember him still; Therefore My heart yearneth for him, I will surely have compassion upon him, saith the LORD.

³³ But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the LORD, I will put My law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people; ³⁴ and they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying: 'Know the LORD'; for they shall all know Me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.

⁴ Howbeit I sent unto you all My servants the prophets, sending them betimes and often, saying: Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.

¹⁸ When I say unto the wicked: Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at thy hand. ¹⁹ Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

²⁰ Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto Me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Were thy harlotries a small matter, ²¹ that thou hast slain My children, and delivered them up, in setting them apart unto them?

³⁸ And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will bring upon thee the blood of fury and jealousy. ³⁹ I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and break down thy lofty places; and they shall strip thee of thy clothes, and take thy fair jewels; and they shall leave thee naked and bare. ⁴⁰ They shall also bring up an assembly against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords.

³⁰ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Return ye, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so shall they not be a stumblingblock of iniquity unto you. ³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, wherein ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? ³² For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD; wherefore turn yourselves, and live.

² When the LORD spoke at first with Hosea, the LORD said unto Hosea: 'Go, take unto thee a wife of harlotry and children of harlotry; for the land doth commit great harlotry, departing from the LORD.'

⁴ Their doings will not suffer them to return unto their God; for the spirit of harlotry is within them, and they know not the LORD.

³ And let us know, eagerly strive to know the LORD, His going forth is sure as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter rain that watereth the earth.'

⁹ (14:10) Whoso is wise, let him understand these things, whoso is prudent, let him know them. For the ways of the LORD are right, and the just do walk in them; but transgressors do stumble therein.

⁷ Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and cast righteousness to the ground;

¹⁰ They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

¹³ Therefore the prudent doth keep silence in such a time; for it is an evil time.

¹² Do horses run upon the rocks? Doth one plow there with oxen? that ye have turned justice into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood;

¹² But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they His counsel; for He hath gathered them as the sheaves to the threshing-floor.

² (5:1) But thou, Beth-lehem Ephrathah, which art little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall one come forth unto Me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from ancient days.

⁴ Therefore the law is slacked, and right doth never go forth; for the wicked doth beset the righteous; therefore right goeth forth perverted. ⁵ Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever? ⁶ But My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? so that they turned and said: Like as the LORD of hosts purposed to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath He dealt with us.'

⁹ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion, shout, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, thy king cometh unto thee, he is triumphant, and victorious, lowly, and riding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass.

¹¹ As for thee also, because of the blood of thy covenant I send forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water. ¹² Return to the stronghold, ye prisoners of hope; even to-day do I declare that I will render double unto thee.

⁶ A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master; if then I be a father, where is My honour? and if I be a master, where is My fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise My name. And ye say: 'Wherein have we despised Thy name?'

¹¹ Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which He loveth, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.

² (3:20) But unto you that fear My name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings; and ye shall go forth, and gambol as calves of the stall.

⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁹ and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father; for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

¹⁷ Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets; I came not to destroy, but to fulfil. ¹⁸ For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished.

⁴⁵ that ye may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust.

¹ Judge not, that ye be not judged. ² For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye measure, it shall be measured unto you. ³ And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? ⁴ Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me cast out the mote out of thine eye, and lo, the beam is in thine own eye? ⁵ Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

⁴¹ The men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, a greater than Jonah is here. ⁴² The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

³⁷ And as he was now drawing nigh, even at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works which they had seen,

¹⁴ When therefore the people saw the sign which he did, they said, This is of a truth the prophet that cometh into the world.

⁴³ Now when the synagogue broke up, many of the Jews and of the devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

²² Having therefore obtained the help that is from God, I stand unto this day testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses did say should come, ²³ how that the Christ must suffer, and how that he first by the resurrection of the dead should proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles.

⁴ who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, even Jesus Christ our Lord,

²² Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect, ²³ and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness, and he was called the friend of God. ²⁴ Ye see then that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.
