¹¹ And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, trying him.

² Wherefore the people strove with Moses, and said: 'Give us water that we may drink.' And Moses said unto them: 'Why strive ye with me? wherefore do ye try the LORD?'

⁷ And the name of the place was called Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tried the LORD, saying: 'Is the LORD among us, or not?'

¹⁶ Ye shall not try the LORD your God, as ye tried Him in Massah.

¹⁵ And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they try God, and are delivered.'

³⁸ Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, Teacher, we would see a sign from thee.

¹ And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and trying him asked him to show them a sign from heaven. ² But he answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather; for the heaven is red. ³ And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day; for the heaven is red and lowering. Ye know how to discern the face of the heaven, but ye cannot discern the signs of the times. ⁴ An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign, and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of Jonah the prophet. And he left them, and departed. ⁵ And his disciples came to the other side and forgot to take bread. ⁶ And Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. ⁷ And they reasoned among themselves, saying, We took no bread. ⁸ And Jesus perceiving it, said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye took no bread? ⁹ Do ye not yet perceive, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? ¹⁰ Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? ¹¹ How is it that ye do not perceive that not concerning bread spake I to you, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? ¹² Then understood they that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

³ And there came unto him Pharisees, trying him, and saying, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

²³ And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

¹⁵ Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might ensnare him in his talk.

¹⁸ But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why make ye trial of me, ye hypocrites?

²³ On that day there came to him Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him,

³⁴ But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, gathered themselves together. ³⁵ And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, trying him, and saying,

¹⁶ And the scribes and the Pharisees, when they saw him eating with the publicans and sinners, said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?

¹ And there are gathered together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem. ² And when they had seen some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, unwashen, hands, they found fault.

¹⁵ Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why make ye trial of me? bring me a denarius, that I may see it.

²⁵ And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and made trial of him, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

¹⁶ And others, trying him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

⁵³ And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press upon him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

⁵⁴ And he said to the multitudes also, When ye see a cloud rising in the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower, and so it cometh to pass. ⁵⁵ And when ye see a south wind blowing, ye say, There will be a scorching heat, and it cometh to pass. ⁵⁶ Ye hypocrites, ye know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven, but how is it that ye do not interpret this time? ⁵⁷ And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

⁴⁸ Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe.

³⁰ They said therefore unto him, What then doest thou for a sign, that we may see, and believe thee? what workest thou?

⁴⁸ Hath any of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?

⁹ But Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to try the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out.

²² Seeing that Jews ask for signs, and Greeks seek after wisdom: ²³ but we preach Christ crucified, unto Jews a stumblingblock, and unto Greeks foolishness,

⁹ Neither let us make trial of the Lord, as some of them made trial, and perished by the serpents.
