⁹ And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

¹¹ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: ¹² 'When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel, according to their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them. ¹³ This they shall give, every one that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary - the shekel is twenty gerahs - half a shekel for an offering to the LORD. ¹⁴ Every one that passeth among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering of the LORD. ¹⁵ The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when they give the offering of the LORD, to make atonement for your souls. ¹⁶ And thou shalt take the atonement money from the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tent of meeting, that it may be a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD, to make atonement for your souls.'

²⁵ And the silver of them that were numbered of the congregation was a hundred talents, and a thousand seven hundred and three-score and fifteen shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary: ²⁶ a beka a head, that is, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that passed over to them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men.

² 'Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male, by their polls; ³ from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: ye shall number them by their hosts, even thou and Aaron.

¹ And the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.

¹ And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying:

⁴⁶ beyond the Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, when they came forth out of Egypt; ⁴⁷ and they took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising; ⁴⁸ from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, even unto mount Sion - the same is Hermon - ⁴⁹ and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

¹ And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land, even Gilead as far as Dan;

⁶ And he was buried in the valley in the land of Moab over against Beth-peor; and no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

⁸ And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; so the days of weeping in the mourning for Moses were ended.

¹ And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after the were come out of the land of Egypt, saying:

¹ And Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.

³² And Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said: 'Because the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.'

¹ Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men; ² and they rose up in face of Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty men; they were princes of the congregation, the elect men of the assembly, men of renown; ³ and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them: 'Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them; wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?' ⁴ And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face. ⁵ And he spoke unto Korah and unto all his company, saying: 'In the morning the LORD will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto Him; even him whom He may choose will He cause to come near unto Him. ⁶ This do: take you censors, Korah, and all his company; ⁷ and put fire therein, and put incense upon them before the LORD to-morrow; and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy; ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.' ⁸ And Moses said unto Korah: 'Hear now, ye sons of Levi: ⁹ is it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them; ¹⁰ and that He hath brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and will ye seek the priesthood also? ¹¹ Therefore thou and all thy company that are gathered together against the LORD -; and as to Aaron, what is he that ye murmur against him?' ¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said: 'We will not come up; ¹³ is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a prince over us? ¹⁴ Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards; wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.' ¹⁵ And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD: 'Respect not Thou their offering; I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.' ¹⁶ And Moses said unto Korah: 'Be thou and all thy congregation before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow; ¹⁷ and take ye every man his fire-pan, and put incense upon them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his fire-pan, two hundred and fifty fire-pans; thou also, and Aaron, each his fire-pan.' ¹⁸ And they took every man his fire-pan, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. ¹⁹ And Korah assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation. ²⁰ And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: ²¹ 'Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.' ²² And they fell upon their faces, and said: 'O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt Thou be wroth with all the congregation?' ²³ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: ²⁴ 'Speak unto the congregation, saying: Get you up from about the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.' ²⁵ And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. ²⁶ And he spoke unto the congregation, saying: 'Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be swept away in all their sins.' ²⁷ So they got them up from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side; and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little ones. ²⁸ And Moses said: 'Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works, and that I have not done them of mine own mind. ²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, and be visited after the visitation of all men, then the LORD hath not sent Me. ³⁰ But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.' ³¹ And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground did cleave asunder that was under them. ³² And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. ³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly. ³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said: 'Lest the earth swallow us up.' ³⁵ And fire came forth from the LORD, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

¹⁷ The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.

¹¹ Woe unto them! For they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah.

³⁵ And the children of Israel did eat the manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat the manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

² and they rose up in face of Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty men; they were princes of the congregation, the elect men of the assembly, men of renown;

³⁸ (17:3) even the fire-pans of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar - for they are become holy, because they were offered before the LORD - that they may be a sign unto the children of Israel.'

³ 'Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not among the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but he died in his own sin; and he had no sons.

³⁴ And this shall be the sign unto thee, that which shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die both of them.

¹⁷ The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. ¹⁸ And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.

²² and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah that are in Babylon, saying: 'The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire';

⁸ and I will set My face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of My people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. ⁷ Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them, as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. ⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. ⁹ Neither let us make trial of the Lord, as some of them made trial, and perished by the serpents. ¹⁰ Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.

⁶ and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, having made them an example unto those that should live impiously,

⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, having in like manner with these given themselves over to fornication and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire.

²⁴ And the sons of Korah: Assir, and Elkanah, and Abiasaph; these are the families of the Korahites.

⁵ And he spoke unto Korah and unto all his company, saying: 'In the morning the LORD will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto Him; even him whom He may choose will He cause to come near unto Him.

³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

¹⁶ The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers; every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

¹ And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. ² And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her. ³ And she conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Er. ⁴ And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Onan. ⁵ And she yet again bore a son, and called his name Shelah; and he was at Chezib, when she bore him. ⁶ And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar. ⁷ And Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. ⁸ And Judah said unto Onan: 'Go in unto thy brother's wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her, and raise up seed to thy brother.' ⁹ And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother. ¹⁰ And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of the LORD; and He slew him also.

¹² And the sons of Judah: Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.

³ The sons of Judah: Er, and Onan, and Shelah; which three were born unto him of Bath-shua the Canaanitess. And Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and He slew him. ⁴ And Tamar his daughter-in-law bore him Perez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five. ⁵ The sons of Perez: Hezron, and Hamul. ⁶ And the sons of Zerah: Zimri, and Ethan, and Heman, and Calcol, and Dara: five of them in all. ⁷ And the sons of Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel, who committed a trespass concerning the devoted thing. ⁸ And the sons of Ethan: Azariah.

⁵ And she yet again bore a son, and called his name Shelah; and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.

¹¹ Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law: 'Remain a widow in thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown up'; for he said: 'Lest he also die, like his brethren.' And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

¹⁴ And she put off from her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the entrance of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she was not given unto him to wife.

²⁶ And Judah acknowledged them, and said: 'She is more righteous than I; forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son.' And he knew her again no more. ²⁷ And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. ²⁸ And it came to pass, when she travailed, that one put out a hand; and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying: 'This came out first.' ²⁹ And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold his brother came out; and she said: 'Wherefore hast thou made a breach for thyself?' Therefore his name was called Perez. ³⁰ And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zerah.

¹⁸ Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez begot Hezron; ¹⁹ and Hezron begot Ram, and Ram begot Amminadab; ²⁰ and Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon; ²¹ and Salmon begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Obed; ²² and Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David.

²¹ The sons of Shelah the son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah, and Ladah the father of Mareshah, and the families of the house of them that wrought fine linen, of the house of Ashbea;

⁴ And in Jerusalem dwelt certain of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin. Of the children of Judah: Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel, of the children of Perez;

⁶ All the sons of Perez that dwelt in Jerusalem were four hundred threescore and eight valiant men.

²⁴ And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the children of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king's hand in all matters concerning the people.

³ and Judah begat Perez and Zerah of Tamar, and Perez begat Hezron, and Hezron begat Ram,

³³ the son of Amminadab, the son of Aram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,

⁸ Judah, thee shall thy brethren praise; thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; thy father's sons shall bow down before thee.

²⁶ Of the children of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ²⁷ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.

³ Now those that pitch on the east side toward the sunrising shall be they of the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their hosts; the prince of the children of Judah being Nahshon the son of Amminadab, ⁴ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred;

² For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came he that is the prince; but the birthright was Joseph's -

¹⁴ The LORD increase you more and more, you and your children.

¹⁴ For it is evident that our Lord hath sprung out of Judah, as to which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

¹⁷ And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son. ¹⁸ And Leah said: 'God hath given me my hire, because I gave my handmaid to my husband. And she called his name Issachar.

¹³ And the sons of Issachar: Tola, and Puvah, and Iob, and Shimron.

⁵ and those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Issachar; the prince of the children of Issachar being Nethanel the son of Zuar,

¹ And of the sons of Issachar: Tola, and Puah, Jashub, and Shimron, four.

²⁸ Of the children of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ²⁹ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.

⁵ and those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Issachar; the prince of the children of Issachar being Nethanel the son of Zuar, ⁶ and his host, even those that were numbered thereof, fifty and four thousand and four hundred;

¹⁹ And Leah conceived again, and bore a sixth son to Jacob. ²⁰ And Leah said: 'God hath endowed me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons.' And she called his name Zebulun.

¹⁴ And the sons of Zebulun: Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel.

³⁰ Of the children of Zebulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ³¹ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.

⁷ and the tribe of Zebulun; the prince of the children of Zebulun being Eliab the son of Helon, ⁸ and his host, and those that were numbered thereof, fifty and seven thousand and four hundred;

⁵¹ And Joseph called the name of the first-born Manasseh: 'for God hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.' ⁵² And the name of the second called he Ephraim: 'for God hath made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.'

²⁰ And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On bore unto him.

⁵ And now thy two sons, who were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh, even as Reuben and Simeon, shall be mine.

¹³ And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near unto him. ¹⁴ And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the first-born. ¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph, and said: 'The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God who hath been my shepherd all my life long unto this day, ¹⁶ the angel who hath redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named in them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.' ¹⁷ And when Joseph saw that his father was laying his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head. ¹⁸ And Joseph said unto his father: 'Not so, my father, for this is the first-born; put thy right hand upon his head.' ¹⁹ And his father refused, and said: 'I know it, my son, I know it; he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; howbeit his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.' ²⁰ And he blessed them that day, saying: 'By thee shall Israel bless, saying: God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh.' And he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

¹⁴ And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the first-born.

³⁹ And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites that were therein. ⁴⁰ And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.

¹ And the heads of the fathers' houses of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers' houses of the children of Israel;

¹⁵ And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

¹ And this was the lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the first-born of Joseph. As for Machir the first-born of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.

¹⁴ Out of Ephraim came they whose root is in Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the marshal's staff.

¹⁴ The sons of Manasseh: Asriel, whom his wife bore - his concubine the Aramitess bore Machir the father of Gilead; ¹⁵ and Machir took a wife of Huppim and Shuppim, whose sister's name was Maacah - and the name of the second was Zelophehad; and Zelophehad had daughters. ¹⁶ And Maacah the wife of Machir bore a son, and she called his name Peresh; and the name of his brother was Sheresh; and his sons were Ulam and Rekem. ¹⁷ And the sons of Ulam: Bedan. These were the sons of Gilead the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh. ¹⁸ And his sister Hammolecheth bore Ish-hod, and Abiezer, and Mahlah. ¹⁹ And the sons of Shemida were Ahian, and Shechem, and Likhi, and Aniam.

² And the lot was for the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families; for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida; these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.

¹¹ And the angel of the LORD came, and sat under the terebinth which was in Ophrah, that belonged unto Joash the Abiezrite; and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

²⁴ Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it 'Adonai-shalom'; unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

³⁴ But the spirit of the LORD clothed Gideon; and he blew a horn; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

² And he said unto them: 'What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

¹ Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.

¹⁰ Even as the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad. ¹¹ For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married unto their father's brothers' sons. ¹² They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

³⁴ Of the children of Manasseh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ³⁵ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.

²⁰ and next unto him shall be the tribe of Manasseh; the prince of the children of Manasseh being Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur, ²¹ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, thirty and two thousand and two hundred;

²⁰ And the sons of Ephraim: Shuthelah - and Bered was his son, and Tahath his son, and Eleadah his son, and Tahath his son, ²¹ and Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son - and Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of Gath that were born in the land slew, because they came down to take away their cattle.

³² Of the children of Joseph, namely, of the children of Ephraim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ³³ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred.

¹⁸ On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their hosts; the prince of the children of Ephraim being Elishama the son of Ammihud, ¹⁹ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, forty thousand and five hundred;

² And God spoke unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said: 'Jacob, Jacob.' And he said: 'Here am I.'

²¹ And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.

⁶ The sons of Benjamin: Bela, and Becher, and Jediael, three. ⁷ And the sons of Bela: Ezbon, and Uzzi, and Uzziel, and Jerimoth, and Iri, five; heads of fathers' houses, mighty men of valour; and they were reckoned by genealogy twenty and two thousand and thirty and four. ⁸ And the sons of Becher: Zemirah, and Joash, and Eliezer, and Elioenai, and Omri, and Jeremoth, and Abijah, and Anathoth, and Alemeth. All these were the sons of Becher. ⁹ And they were reckoned by genealogy, after their generations, heads of their fathers' houses, mighty men of valour, twenty thousand and two hundred. ¹⁰ And the sons of Jediael: Bilhan; and the sons of Bilhan: Jeush, and Benjamin, and Ehud, and Chenaanah, and Zethan, and Tarshish, and Ahishahar. ¹¹ All these were sons of Jediael, even heads of their fathers' houses, mighty men of valour, seventeen thousand and two hundred, that were able to go forth in the host for war. ¹² Shuppim also, and Huppim, the sons of Ir, Hushim, the son of another.

¹ And Benjamin begot Bela his first-born, Ashbel the second, and Aharah the third;

³ And Bela had sons, Addar, and Gera, and Abihud;

³⁶ Of the children of Benjamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ³⁷ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.

²² and the tribe of Benjamin; the prince of the children of Benjamin being Abidan the son of Gideoni, ²³ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, thirty and five thousand and four hundred;

²³ And the sons of Dan: Hushim.

³⁸ Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ³⁹ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred.

²⁵ On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan according to their hosts; the prince of the children of Dan being Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai, ²⁶ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, threescore and two thousand and seven hundred;

¹⁷ And the sons of Asher: Imnah, and Ishvah, and Ishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister; and the sons of Beriah: Heber, and Malchiel.

³⁰ The sons of Asher: Imnah, and Ishvah, and Ishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister.

⁴⁰ Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ⁴¹ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.

²⁷ and those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Asher; the prince of the children of Asher being Pagiel the son of Ochran, ²⁸ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, forty and one thousand and five hundred;

²⁴ And the sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.

¹³ The sons of Naphtali: Jahziel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shallum, the sons of Bilhah.

⁴² Of the children of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ⁴³ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

²⁹ and the tribe of Naphtali; the prince of the children of Naphtali being Ahira the son of Enan, ³⁰ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, fifty and three thousand and four hundred;

³⁷ And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, beside children.

²⁶ a beka a head, that is, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that passed over to them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men.

⁴⁶ even all those that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

³² These are they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers' houses; all that were numbered of the camps according to their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

²¹ And Moses said: 'The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and yet Thou hast said: I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month!

²³ Their children also didst Thou multiply as the stars of heaven, and didst bring them into the land, concerning which Thou didst say to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.

⁹ Who knoweth not among all these, that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? ¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. -

¹⁴ Behold, He breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

²⁰ He removeth the speech of men of trust, and taketh away the sense of the elders. ²¹ He poureth contempt upon princes, and looseth the belt of the strong. ²² He uncovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death. ²³ He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them; He enlargeth the nations, and leadeth them away.

²⁰ (77:21) Thou didst lead Thy people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

² And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and be thou a blessing.

⁷ And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said: 'Unto thy seed will I give this land'; and he builded there an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.

²³ So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD spoke unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land had rest from war.

¹ And these are the inheritances which the children of Israel took in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed unto them,

¹⁴ (49:15) Like sheep they are appointed for the nether-world; death shall be their shepherd; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their form shall be for the nether-world to wear away, that there be no habitation for it.

⁴⁴ And He gave them the lands of the nations, and they took the labour of the peoples in possession;

²² And it shall come to pass, that ye shall divide it by lot for an inheritance unto you and to the strangers that sojourn among you, who shall beget children among you; and they shall be unto you as the home-born among the children of Israel; they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel.

²⁷ And the kingdom and the dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; their kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey them.'

⁵ Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth.

¹⁰ and made them kings and priests unto our God, and they reign upon earth.

²⁷ and there shall in no wise enter into it anything unclean, or any that maketh an abomination and a lie; but only they that are written in the Lamb's book of life.

³ 'Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,

⁵ And they said: 'If we have found favour in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession; bring us not over the Jordan.'

⁵⁴ And ye shall inherit the land by lot according to your families - to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer thou shalt give the less inheritance; wheresoever the lot falleth to any man, that shall be his; according to the tribes of your fathers shall ye inherit.

¹⁴ And the children of Joseph spoke unto Joshua, saying: 'Why hast thou given me but one lot and one part for an inheritance, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me thus?'

⁵⁶ According to the lot shall their inheritance be divided between the more and the fewer.'

¹³ And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying: 'This is the land wherein ye shall receive inheritance by lot, which the LORD hath commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe;

² by the lot of their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half-tribe. -

⁶ And ye shall describe the land into seven portions, and bring the description hither to me; and I will cast lots for you here before the LORD our God.

¹⁰ And Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the LORD; and there Joshua divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions. ¹¹ And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families; and the border of their lot went out between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.

¹ And the second lot came out for Simeon, even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families; and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Judah.

¹⁰ And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families; and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid.

¹⁷ The fourth lot came out for Issachar, even for the children of Issachar according to their families.

²⁴ And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families.

³² The sixth lot came out for the children of Naphtali, even for the children of Naphtali according to their families.

⁴⁰ The seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families.

³³ The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.

¹⁸ The lot causeth strife to cease, and parteth asunder the contentious.

²⁶ And they gave their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

¹² giving thanks unto the Father, who made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light,

⁴ And I heard the number of them that were sealed, a hundred and forty and four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the children of Israel: ⁵ Of the tribe of Judah were sealed twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, Of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, ⁶ Of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, Of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, Of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand, ⁷ Of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, Of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, Of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand, ⁸ Of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, Of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, Of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand.

⁷ What then? that which Israel seeketh for, that he obtained not, but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened:

⁴ Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

¹¹ And the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

¹⁶ And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon and Kohath, and Merari. And the years of the life of Levi were a hundred thirty and seven years. ¹⁷ The sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, according to their families. ¹⁸ And the sons of Kohath: Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel. And the years of the life of Kohath were a hundred thirty and three years. ¹⁹ And the sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their generations.

¹ Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spoke with Moses in mount Sinai. ² And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the first-born, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ³ These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests that were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest's office. ⁴ And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the presence of Aaron their father.

² 'Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and open land round about the cities shall ye give unto the Levites. ³ And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and their open land shall be for their cattle, and for their substance, and for all their beasts.

¹ (5:27) The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

¹⁶ (6:1) The sons of Levi: Gershom, Kohath and Merari. ¹⁷ (6:2) And these are the names of the sons of Gershom: Libni, and Shimei. ¹⁸ (6:3) And the sons of Kohath were Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel. ¹⁹ (6:4) The sons of Merari: Mahli, and Mushi. And these are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' houses. ²⁰ (6:5) Of Gershom: Libni his son, Jahath his son, Zimmah his son; ²¹ (6:6) Joah his son, Iddo his son, Zerah his son, Jeatherai his son. ²² (6:7) The sons of Kohath: Amminadab his son, Korah his son, Assir his son; ²³ (6:8) Elkanah his son, and Ebiasaph his son, and Assir his son; ²⁴ (6:9) Tahath his son, Uriel his son, Uzziah his son, and Shaul his son. ²⁵ (6:10) And the sons of Elkanah: Amasai, and Ahimoth. ²⁶ (6:11) As for Elkanah: the sons of Elkanah: Zophai his son, and Nahath his son; ²⁷ (6:12) Eliab his son, Jeroham his son, Elkanah his son. ²⁸ (6:13) And the sons of Samuel: the first-born Vashni; then Abiah. ²⁹ (6:14) The sons of Merari: Mahli; Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son; ³⁰ (6:15) Shimea his son, Haggiah his son, Asaiah his son.

²⁰ And Amram took him Jochebed his father's sister to wife; and she bore him Aaron and Moses. And the years of the life of Amram were a hundred and thirty and seven years.

¹⁷ And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari. ¹⁸ And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei. ¹⁹ And the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. ²⁰ And the sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' houses. ²¹ Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimeites; these are the families of the Gershonites.

¹ Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men;

¹ And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. ² And the woman conceived, and bore a son; and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.

¹² Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's sister: she is thy father's near kinswoman.

² And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the first-born, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

⁸ And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.

¹ And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. ² And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

⁴ And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the presence of Aaron their father.

¹ And the courses of the sons of Aaron were these. The sons of Aaron: Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. ² But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children; therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest's office.

⁴⁷ But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

⁴⁹ 'Howbeit the tribe of Levi thou shalt not number, neither shalt thou take the sum of them among the children of Israel;

³⁹ All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the LORD, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand.

²⁷ At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden, and in all their service; and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burden.

⁴⁸ even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore.

²⁰ And the LORD said unto Aaron: 'Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any portion among them; I am thy portion and thine inheritance among the children of Israel. ²¹ And unto the children of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they serve, even the service of the tent of meeting. ²² And henceforth the children of Israel shall not come nigh the tent of meeting, lest they bear sin, and die. ²³ But the Levites alone shall do the service of the tent of meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity; it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, and among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance. ²⁴ For the tithe of the children of Israel, which they set apart as a gift unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance; therefore I have said unto them: Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.'

² 'Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and open land round about the cities shall ye give unto the Levites. ³ And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and their open land shall be for their cattle, and for their substance, and for all their beasts. ⁴ And the open land about the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about. ⁵ And ye shall measure without the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This shall be to them the open land about the cities. ⁶ And the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which ye shall give for the manslayer to flee thither; and beside them ye shall give forty and two cities. ⁷ All the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with the open land about them. ⁸ And concerning the cities which ye shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many ye shall take many, and from the few ye shall take few; each tribe according to its inheritance which it inheriteth shall give of its cities unto the Levites.'

⁹ Wherefore Levi hath no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God spoke unto him. -

²⁷ And the Levite that is within thy gates, thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no portion nor inheritance with thee. ²⁸ At the end of every three years, even in the same year, thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase, and shall lay it up within thy gates. ²⁹ And the Levite, because he hath no portion nor inheritance with thee, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thy hand which thou doest.

¹ The priests the Levites, even all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion nor inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and His inheritance. ² And they shall have no inheritance among their brethren; the LORD is their inheritance, as He hath spoken unto them.

¹⁴ Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; the offerings of the LORD, the God of Israel, made by fire are his inheritance, as He spoke unto him.

³³ But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as He spoke unto them.

³ For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan; but unto the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

³ And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying:

¹ And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after the were come out of the land of Egypt, saying: ² 'Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male, by their polls;

²⁹ your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have murmured against Me;

¹⁴ And the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, were thirty and eight years; until all the generation, even the men of war, were consumed from the midst of the camp, as the LORD swore unto them. ¹⁵ Moreover the hand of the LORD was against them, to discomfit them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.

³ Your eyes have seen what the LORD did in Baal-peor; for all the men that followed the Baal of Peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from the midst of thee. ⁴ But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.

⁵ Howbeit with most of them God was not well pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

¹⁷ And with whom was he displeased forty years? was it not with them that sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

²³ surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it. ²⁴ But My servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed Me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.

²⁸ Say unto them: As I live, saith the LORD, surely as ye have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you: ²⁹ your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have murmured against Me; ³⁰ surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

³⁵ I the LORD have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.'

³⁸ But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men that went to spy out the land.

⁴⁹ 'Get thee up into this mountain of Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession; ⁵⁰ and die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people.

⁶ Then the children of Judah drew nigh unto Joshua in Gilgal; and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said unto him: 'Thou knowest the thing that the LORD spoke unto Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning thee in Kadesh-barnea. ⁷ Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land; and I brought him back word as it was in my heart. ⁸ Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed the LORD my God. ⁹ And Moses swore on that day, saying: Surely the land whereon thy foot hath trodden shall be an inheritance to thee and to thy children for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God. ¹⁰ And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as He spoke, these forty and five years, from the time that the LORD spoke this word unto Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness; and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

³ Thou turnest man to contrition; and sayest: 'Return, ye children of men.' ⁴ For a thousand years in Thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. ⁵ Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep; in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. ⁶ In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. ⁷ For we are consumed in Thine anger, and by Thy wrath are we hurried away.

²² Behold then the goodness and severity of God; toward them that fell, severity, but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness; otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

⁵ Howbeit with most of them God was not well pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness. ⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

¹⁷ And with whom was he displeased forty years? was it not with them that sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that were disobedient?

⁵ Now I desire to put you in remembrance, ye knowing this once, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.
