¹ The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother. ² Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; but righteousness delivereth from death. ³ The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; but He thrusteth away the desire of the wicked. ⁴ He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. ⁵ A wise son gathereth in summer; but a son that doeth shamefully sleepeth in harvest. ⁶ Blessings are upon the head of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence. ⁷ The memory of the righteous shall be for a blessing; but the name of the wicked shall rot. ⁸ The wise in heart will receive commandments; but a prating fool shall fall. ⁹ He that walketh uprightly walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways shall be found out. ¹⁰ He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow; and a prating fool shall fall. ¹¹ The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence. ¹² Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love covereth all transgressions. ¹³ In the lips of him that hath discernment wisdom is found; but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding. ¹⁴ Wise men lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is an imminent ruin. ¹⁵ The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the ruin of the poor is their poverty. ¹⁶ The wages of the righteous is life; the increase of the wicked is sin. ¹⁷ He is in the way of life that heedeth instruction; but he that forsaketh reproof erreth. ¹⁸ He that hideth hatred is of lying lips; and he that uttereth a slander is a fool. ¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; but he that refraineth his lips is wise. ²⁰ The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many; but the foolish die for want of understanding. ²² The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and toil addeth nothing thereto. ²³ It is as sport to a fool to do wickedness, and so is wisdom to a man of discernment. ²⁴ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him; and the desire of the righteous shall be granted. ²⁵ When the whirlwind passeth, the wicked is no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation. ²⁶ As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him. ²⁷ The fear of the LORD prolongeth days; but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. ²⁸ The hope of the righteous is gladness; but the expectation of the wicked shall perish. ²⁹ The way of the LORD is a stronghold to the upright, but ruin to the workers of iniquity. ³⁰ The righteous shall never be moved; but the wicked shall not inhabit the land. ³¹ The mouth of the righteous buddeth with wisdom; but the froward tongue shall be cut off. ³² The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable; but the mouth of the wicked is all frowardness.

³² (5:12) And he spoke three thousand proverbs; and his songs were a thousand and five.

¹ The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

²⁰ A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

²¹ He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; and the father of a churl hath no joy.

²⁵ A foolish son is vexation to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father; and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

¹⁵ My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart will be glad, even mine; ¹⁶ Yea, my reins will rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

²⁴ The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; and he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him. ²⁵ Let thy father and thy mother be glad, and let her that bore thee rejoice.

¹ These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

³ Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father; but he that keepeth company with harlots wasteth his substance.

¹⁵ The rod and reproof give wisdom; but a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother.

¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

⁹ And besides that Koheleth was wise, he also taught the people knowledge; yea, he pondered, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

⁶ (49:7) Of them that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches? ⁷ (49:8) No man can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him - ⁸ (49:9) For too costly is the redemption of their soul, and must be let alone for ever - ⁹ (49:10) That he should still live alway, that he should not see the pit. ¹⁰ (49:11) For he seeth that wise men die, the fool and the brutish together perish, and leave their wealth to others.

⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath; but righteousness delivereth from death.

²⁸ In the way of righteousness is life, and in the pathway thereof there is no death.

⁶ The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vapour driven to and fro; they that seek them seek death.

² To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right of the poor of My people, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! ³ And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the ruin which shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help? And where will ye leave your glory?

¹⁹ They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be as an unclean thing; their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD; they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels; because it hath been the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

²⁷ (4:24) Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by almsgiving, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of thy prosperity.'

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole earth shall be devoured by the fire of His jealousy; for He will make and end, yea, a terrible end, of all them that dwell in the earth.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from covetousness; for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. ¹⁶ And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; ¹⁷ and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do; I will pull down my barns, and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be? ²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died, and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

⁵ but after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up for thyself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God,

²¹ that, as sin reigned in death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

⁹ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of mine own, even that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith:

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted, and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days.

²⁰ In famine He will redeem thee from death; and in war from the power of the sword.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment? ⁶ Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds; ⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; they that have seen him shall say: 'Where is he?' ⁸ He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found; yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.

²⁰ Because he knew no quietness within him, in his greed he suffered nought to escape, ²¹ There was nothing left that he devoured not - therefore his prosperity shall not endure. ²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits; the hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him.

²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart, his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

¹⁴ Thou hast seen; for Thou beholdest trouble and vexation, to requite them with Thy hand; unto Thee the helpless committeth himself; Thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.

¹⁹ To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

⁹ (34:10) O fear the LORD, ye His holy ones; for there is no want to them that fear Him. ¹⁰ (34:11) The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger; but they that seek the LORD want not any good thing.

³ Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land, and cherish faithfulness.

¹⁹ They shall not be ashamed in the time of evil; and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

²⁵ I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

¹⁰ The wicked shall see it, and be vexed; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away; the desire of the wicked shall perish.

³² The wicked is thrust down in his misfortune; but the righteous, even when he is brought to death, hath hope.

¹⁶ He shall dwell on high; his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks; his bread shall be given, his waters shall be sure.

⁶ Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting riddle against him, and say: 'Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and that ladeth himself with many pledges!' ⁷ Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall exact interest of thee, and awake that shall violently shake thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them? ⁸ Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall spoil thee; because of men's blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all that dwell therein.

³⁰ But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? ³¹ Be not therefore anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? ³² For after all these things do the Gentiles seek, for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. ³³ But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

²² And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. ²³ For the life is more than the food, and the body than the raiment. ²⁴ Consider the ravens, that they sow not, neither reap, which have no store-chamber nor barn, and God feedeth them; of how much more value are ye than the birds!

³¹ Yet seek ye the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added unto you.

⁵ Be ye free from the love of money, content with such things as ye have; for himself hath said, I will in no wise fail thee, neither will I in any wise forsake thee. ⁶ So that with good courage we say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear; What shall man do unto me?

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise; ⁷ Which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ Provideth her bread in the summer, and gatherest her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ¹⁰ 'Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep' - ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.

²⁴ There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth only to want.

²⁴ The hand of the diligent shall bear rule; but the slothful shall be under tribute.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be abundantly gratified.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and the idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁴ The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish, and will not so much as bring it back to his mouth.

⁴ The sluggard will not plow when winter setteth in; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

¹³ Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt have bread in plenty.

⁵ The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but every one that is hasty hasteth only to want.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thistles, the face thereof was covered with nettles, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. ³² Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction. ³³ 'Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep' - ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.

¹⁸ By slothfulness the rafters sink in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.

²⁷ Work not for the food which perisheth, but for the food which abideth unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you; for him the Father, even God, hath sealed.

⁵⁸ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not vain in the Lord.

¹¹ And we desire that each one of you may show the same diligence unto the fullness of hope even to the end: ¹² that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

⁵ Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue, and in your virtue knowledge, ⁶ and in your knowledge self-control, and in your self-control patience, and in your patience godliness, ⁷ and in your godliness brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness love. ⁸ For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful unto the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ For he that lacketh these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. ¹⁰ Wherefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things, ye shall never stumble:

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise;

⁸ Provideth her bread in the summer, and gatherest her food in the harvest.

⁴ A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband; but she that doeth shamefully is as rottenness in his bones.

² A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that dealeth shamefully, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

²⁶ A son that dealeth shamefully and reproachfully will despoil his father, and chase away his mother.

²⁵ The ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer;

⁶ Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near; ⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the man of iniquity his thoughts; and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have compassion upon him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

² And all these blessings shall come upon thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.

⁸ Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the couch whereon Esther was. Then said the king: 'Will he even force the queen before me in the house?' As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

⁴² The upright see it, and are glad; and all iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

¹¹ The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence.

²⁶ He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him; but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

²⁵ But to them that decide justly shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.

²⁰ A faithful man shall abound with blessings; but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be unpunished.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

¹⁶ The Lord grant mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain, ¹⁷ but, when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me ¹⁸ (the Lord grant unto him to find mercy of the Lord in that day), and in how many things he ministered at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

³⁶ And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David My servant may have a lamp alway before Me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen Me to put My name there.

³⁴ For I will defend this city to save it, for Mine own sake, and for My servant David's sake.'

¹⁶ And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and His house.

¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name abroad.

²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

⁵ (9:6) Thou hast rebuked the nations, Thou hast destroyed the wicked, Thou hast blotted out their name for ever and ever. ⁶ (9:7) O thou enemy, the waste places are come to an end for ever; and the cities which thou didst uproot, their very memorial is perished.

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off; in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that He may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

⁶ For he shall never be moved; the righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance.

¹⁰ And so I saw the wicked buried, and they entered into their rest; but they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city; this also is vanity.

¹³ Thou hope of Israel, the LORD! All that forsake Thee shall be ashamed; they that depart from Thee shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

⁹ Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever the gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, that also which this woman hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

⁴⁸ For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid; For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

³⁴ Give me understanding, that I keep Thy law and observe it with my whole heart.

⁵ That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning, and the man of understanding may attain unto wise counsels;

⁹ Give to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁰ He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow; and a prating fool shall fall.

¹ Whoso loveth knowledge loveth correction; but he that is brutish hateth reproof.

¹³ In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man; but the righteous cometh out of trouble.

³ He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life; but for him that openeth wide his lips there shall be ruin.

⁸ The wisdom of the prudent is to look well to his way; but the folly of fools is deceit.

²³ In all labour there is profit; but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

²⁴ Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock; ²⁵ and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell not; for it was founded upon the rock.

¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom.

⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.

²¹ Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, because I wait for Thee.

¹¹ But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity; redeem me, and be gracious unto me. ¹² My foot standeth in an even place; in the congregations will I bless the LORD.

¹¹ (84:12) For the LORD God is a sun and a shield; the LORD giveth grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.

²³ Then shalt thou walk in thy way securely, and thou shalt not dash thy foot.

²⁰ He that hath a froward heart findeth no good; and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into evil.

¹⁸ Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved; but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.

¹⁵ He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from looking upon evil; ¹⁶ He shall dwell on high; his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks; his bread shall be given, his waters shall be sure.

²⁶ Fear them not therefore; for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed, and hid, that shall not be known.

¹ In the mean time, when the many thousands of the multitude were gathered together, insomuch that they trod one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. ² But there is nothing covered up, that shall not be revealed, and hid, that shall not be known.

⁵ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts, and then shall each man have his praise from God.

¹³ And the rest of the Jews dissembled likewise with him, insomuch that even Barnabas was carried away with their dissimulation. ¹⁴ But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest as do the Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

²⁵ In like manner also there are good works that are evident, and such as are otherwise cannot be hid.

¹² Why doth thy heart carry thee away? And why do thine eyes wink?

¹⁹ Let not them that are wrongfully mine enemies rejoice over me; neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

¹³ That winketh with his eyes, that scrapeth with his feet, that pointeth with his fingers;

⁸ The wise in heart will receive commandments; but a prating fool shall fall.

²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that indulge it shall eat the fruit thereof.

¹⁰ Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words; and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth them out of the church.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous uttereth wisdom, and his tongue speaketh justice. ³¹ The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps slide.

²⁰ The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many; but the foolish die for want of understanding.

³² The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable; but the mouth of the wicked is all frowardness.

¹⁴ The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

⁷ The lips of the wise disperse knowledge; but the heart of the foolish is not stedfast.

²² Understanding is a fountain of life unto him that hath it; but folly is the chastisement of fools. ²³ The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. ²⁴ Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

⁴ The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters; a flowing brook, a fountain of wisdom.

¹⁵ There is gold, and a multitude of rubies; but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself. ¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is grievous madness. ¹⁴ A fool also multiplieth words; yet man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?

³⁴ Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. ³⁵ The good man out of his good treasure bringeth forth good things; and the evil man out of his evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. ³⁶ And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

²⁹ Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear.

⁵ So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity. Thus is the tongue set among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, it is full of deadly poison.

¹⁸ A wrathful man stirreth up discord; but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

²⁷ An ungodly man diggeth up evil, and in his lips there is as a burning fire.

⁹ He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that harpeth on a matter estrangeth a familiar friend.

²⁵ He that is of a greedy spirit stirreth up strife; but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be abundantly gratified.

²² An angry man stirreth up strife, and a wrathful man aboundeth in transgression.

⁴ Love suffereth long, and is kind, love envieth not, love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, ⁵ doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not its own, is not provoked, taketh not account of evil, ⁶ rejoiceth not in unrighteousness, but rejoiceth with the truth, ⁷ beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

¹ Whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members?

²⁰ let him know, that he who converteth a sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins.

⁸ and above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves, for love shall cover a multitude of sins:

¹² And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Stretch out thy hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left.'

⁹ Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding; whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, that they come not near unto thee.

³² He that committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; he doeth it that would destroy his own soul.

²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox that goeth to the slaughter, or as one in fetters to the correction of the fool;

¹⁰ He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow; and a prating fool shall fall. ¹¹ The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence.

²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many; but the foolish die for want of understanding.

³¹ The mouth of the righteous buddeth with wisdom; but the froward tongue shall be cut off.

²³ A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth; and a word in due season, how good is it!

¹⁰ A rebuke entereth deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred stripes into a fool.

²⁹ Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

³ A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the back of fools.

²² Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar with a pestle among groats, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

⁴ The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of them that are taught, that I should know how to sustain with words him that is weary; He wakeneth morning by morning, He wakeneth mine ear to hear as they that are taught.

²² And all bare him witness, and wondered at the words of grace which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

¹ He that separateth himself seeketh his own desire, and snarlest against all sound wisdom.

⁷ A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

⁸ He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul; he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

²³ Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

³⁵ The good man out of his good treasure bringeth forth good things; and the evil man out of his evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid, and in his joy he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

⁵² And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

⁶ Seeing it is God, that said, Light shall shine out of darkness, who shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. ⁷ But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves,

²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold: 'Thou art my confidence'; ²⁵ If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

⁶ (49:7) Of them that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches?

⁷ (52:9) 'Lo, this is the man that made not God his stronghold; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.'

²⁰ The poor is hated even of his own neighbour; but the rich hath many friends.

¹¹ The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his own conceit.

⁷ All the brethren of the poor do hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He that pursueth words, they turn against him.

²² Rob not the weak, because he is weak, neither crush the poor in the gate; ²³ For the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil of life those that despoil them.

¹² For wisdom is a defence, even as money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserveth the life of him that hath it.

²³ (9:22) Thus saith the LORD: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches;

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity and work evil upon their beds! When the morning is light, they execute it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away; thus they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

²⁴ And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.

¹⁷ Charge them that are rich in this present world, that they be not highminded, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy,

¹⁸ The wicked earneth deceitful wages; but he that soweth righteousness hath a sure reward. ¹⁹ Stedfast righteousness tendeth to life; but he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

³⁰ The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that is wise winneth souls.

¹⁰ Say ye of the righteous, that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. ¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him; for the work of his hands shall be done to him.

¹⁷ Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but the corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

³³ Either make the tree good, and its fruit good, or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by its fruit. ³⁴ Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

¹⁹ For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings;

²³ For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁷ Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life. ⁹ And let us not be weary in well-doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

¹⁷ and their word will eat as doth a gangrene; of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus, ¹⁸ men who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already, and overthrow the faith of some.

¹³ But evil men and impostors shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

¹⁰ for God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love which ye showed toward his name, in that ye ministered unto the saints, and still do minister.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him: 'Have we made thee of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten?' Then the prophet forbore, and said: 'I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.'

²⁵ But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof; ²⁶ I also, in your calamity, will laugh, I will mock when your dread cometh;

³⁰ They would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof.

¹ My son, forget not my teaching; but let thy heart keep my commandments; ² For length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they add to thee.

¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her, and happy is every one that holdest her fast.

⁴ And he taught me, and said unto me: 'Let thy heart hold fast my words, keep my commandments, and live;

¹³ Take fast hold of instruction, let her not go; keep her, for she is thy life.

¹² And say: 'How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

²³ For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life;

¹⁰ There is grievous correction for him that forsaketh the way; and he that hateth reproof shall die.

¹⁷ Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart unto my knowledge. ¹⁸ For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; let them be established altogether upon thy lips. ¹⁹ That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee.

¹ He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck shall suddenly be broken, and that without remedy.

⁶ (5:5) Suffer not thy mouth to bring thy flesh into guilt, neither say thou before the messenger, that it was an error; wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thy hands?

²⁴ Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock; ²⁵ and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell not; for it was founded upon the rock. ²⁶ And every one that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; ²⁷ and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house, and it fell; and great was the fall thereof.

²⁸ But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

¹ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away from them.

²⁵ See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not when they refused him that warned them on earth, much more shall not we escape who turn away from him that warneth from heaven:

⁵ Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue, and in your virtue knowledge, ⁶ and in your knowledge self-control, and in your self-control patience, and in your patience godliness, ⁷ and in your godliness brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness love. ⁸ For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful unto the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ For he that lacketh these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. ¹⁰ Wherefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things, ye shall never stumble: ¹¹ for thus shall be richly supplied unto you the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

²¹ And Saul said: 'I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.' Wherefore Saul said to David: 'Thou shalt this day be my son-in-law through the one of the twain.' ²² And Saul commanded his servants: 'Speak with David secretly, and say: Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee; now therefore be the king's son-in-law.'

²⁹ And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul was David's enemy continually.

²⁷ And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there in the groin, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

⁸ And David said to Uriah: 'Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet.' And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of food from the king. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. ¹⁰ And when they had told David, saying: 'Uriah went not down unto his house', David said unto Uriah: 'Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thy house?' ¹¹ And Uriah said unto David: 'The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.' ¹² And David said to Uriah: 'Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart.' So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. ¹³ And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk; and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house. ¹⁴ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying: 'Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.'

²³ And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim; and Absalom invited all the king's sons. ²⁴ And Absalom came to the king, and said: 'Behold now, thy servant hath sheep-shearers; let the king, I pray thee, and his servants go with thy servant.' ²⁵ And the king said to Absalom: 'Nay, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome unto thee.' And he pressed him; howbeit he would not go, but blessed him. ²⁶ Then said Absalom: 'If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us.' And the king said unto him: 'Why should he go with thee?' ²⁷ But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him. ²⁸ And Absalom commanded his servants, saying: 'Mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you: Smite Amnon, then kill him, fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.' ²⁹ And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man got him up upon his mule, and fled.

⁹ And Joab said to Amasa: 'Is it well with thee, my brother?' And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. ¹⁰ But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand; so he smote him therewith in the groin, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. And Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

⁹ (5:10) For there is no sincerity in their mouth; their inward part is a yawning gulf, their throat is an open sepulchre; they make smooth their tongue.

² (12:3) They speak falsehood every one with his neighbour; with flattering lip, and with a double heart, do they speak.

³ That hath no slander upon his tongue, nor doeth evil to his fellow, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour;

²⁰ Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.

²¹ (55:22) Smoother than cream were the speeches of his mouth, but his heart was war; his words were softer than oil, yet were they keen-edged swords.

⁵ Whoso slandereth his neighbour in secret, him will I destroy; whoso is haughty of eye and proud of heart, him will I not suffer.

²⁴ He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, but he layeth up deceit within him. ²⁵ When he speaketh fair, believe him not; for there are seven abominations in his heart. ²⁶ Though his hatred be concealed with deceit, his wickedness shall be revealed before the congregation.

²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor. ²¹ And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person of any, but of a truth teachest the way of God:

¹ (39:1) For the Leader, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. (39:2) I said: 'I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue; I will keep a curb upon my mouth, while the wicked is before me.'

²⁷ He that spareth his words hath knowledge; and he that husbandeth his spirit is a man of discernment. ²⁸ Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed as a man of understanding.

³ (5:2) For a dream cometh through a multitude of business; and a fool's voice through a multitude of words.

¹⁹ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

² For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

⁵ And the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

²¹ And the LORD smelled the sweet savour; and the LORD said in His heart: 'I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my produce than choice silver.

¹⁸ There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword; but the tongue of the wise is health.

⁴ A soothing tongue is a tree of life; but perverseness therein is a wound to the spirit.

¹³ Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.

⁷ For as one that hath reckoned within himself, so is he: 'Eat and drink', saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. ¹² As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceeding weak - who can know it?

³⁴ Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. ³⁵ The good man out of his good treasure bringeth forth good things; and the evil man out of his evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

³ Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands. ⁴ Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

¹² I have not gone back from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured up the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

²¹ Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel. ²² After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped upon them.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous uttereth wisdom, and his tongue speaketh justice.

²⁹ For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD;

³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall reel.

¹⁶ Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he hath no understanding?

⁹ And besides that Koheleth was wise, he also taught the people knowledge; yea, he pondered, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. ¹⁰ Koheleth sought to find out words of delight, and that which was written uprightly, even words of truth.

¹⁵ and I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

¹⁶ Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and Thy words were unto me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart; because Thy name was called on me, O LORD God of hosts.

⁶ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to Me; seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also will forget thy children.

¹⁹ When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the evil one, and snatcheth away that which hath been sown in his heart. This is he that was sown by the way side.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. ²⁰ For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

¹⁵ So when they had broken their fast, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. ¹⁶ He saith to him again a second time, Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Tend my sheep. ¹⁷ He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things, thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

²⁸ And even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting,

² Tend the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not of constraint, but willingly, nor yet for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind,

² And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and be thou a blessing.

² And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

²³ that I will not take a thread nor a shoe-latchet nor aught that is thine, lest thou shouldest say: I have made Abram rich;

³⁵ And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great; and He hath given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and men-servants and maid-servants, and camels and asses.

¹² And Isaac sowed in that land, and found in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him.

¹⁷ and thou say in thy heart: 'My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.' ¹⁸ But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

¹⁸ And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed by taking of the devoted thing, so should ye make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.

¹ But the children of Israel committed a trespass concerning the devoted thing; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the devoted thing; and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel. ² And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spoke unto them, saying: 'Go up and spy out the land.' And the men went up and spied out Ai. ³ And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him: 'Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; make not all the people to toil thither; for they are but few.' ⁴ So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men; and they fled before the men of Ai. ⁵ And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men; and they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them at the descent; and the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. ⁶ And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads. ⁷ And Joshua said: 'Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast Thou at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? would that we had been content and dwelt beyond the Jordan! ⁸ Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel hath turned their backs before their enemies! ⁹ For when the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land hear of it, they will compass us round, and cut off our name from the earth; and what wilt Thou do for Thy great name?' ¹⁰ And the LORD said unto Joshua: 'Get thee up; wherefore, now, art thou fallen upon thy face? ¹¹ Israel hath sinned; yea, they have even transgressed My covenant which I commanded them; yea, they have even taken of the devoted thing; and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have even put it among their own stuff. ¹² Therefore the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies, they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed; I will not be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you. ¹³ Up, sanctify the people, and say: Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow; for thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel: There is a curse in the midst of thee, O Israel; thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you. ¹⁴ In the morning therefore ye shall draw near by your tribes; and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come near by families; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come near by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come near man by man. ¹⁵ And it shall be that he that is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath; because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought a wanton deed in Israel.' ¹⁶ So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel near by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken. ¹⁷ And he brought near the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zerahites. And he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man; and Zabdi was taken. ¹⁸ And he brought near his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. ¹⁹ And Joshua said unto Achan: 'My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and make confession unto Him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide nothing from me.' ²⁰ And Achan answered Joshua, and said: 'Of a truth I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done. ²¹ When I saw among the spoil a goodly Shinar mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.' ²² So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it. ²³ And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel; and they laid them down before the LORD. ²⁴ And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up unto the valley of Achor. ²⁵ And Joshua said: 'Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day.' And all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones. ²⁶ And they raised over him a great heap of stones, unto this day; and the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called The valley of Achor, unto this day.

⁷ The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich; He bringeth low, He also lifteth up. ⁸ He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, He lifteth up the needy from the dung-hill, to make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory; for the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, and He hath set the world upon them.

¹⁹ And thou shalt speak unto him, saying: Thus saith the LORD: Hast thou killed, and also taken possessions? and thou shalt speak unto him, saying: Thus saith the LORD: In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.'

²⁶ And he said unto him: 'Went not my heart with thee, when the man turned back from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards and vineyards, and sheep and oxen, and men-servants and maid-servants? ²⁷ The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever.' And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, when God taketh away his soul? ⁹ Will God hear his cry, when trouble cometh upon him? ¹⁰ Will he have his delight in the Almighty, and call upon God at all times? ¹¹ I will teach you concerning the hand of God; that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal. ¹² Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye become altogether vain? ¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty. ¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not have bread enough. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried by pestilence, and his widows shall make no lamentation. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth which the keeper maketh. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but there shall be not to gather; he openeth his eyes, and his wealth is not. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters; a tempest stealeth him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; and it sweepeth him out of his place. ²² Yea, it hurleth at him, and spareth not; he would fain flee from its power. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

²² For such as are blessed of Him shall inherit the land; and they that are cursed of Him shall be cut off.

³⁸ He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly, and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

⁷ Who raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the needy out of the dunghill; ⁸ That He may set him with princes, even with the princes of His people.

²¹ An estate may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

²² He that hath an evil eye hasteneth after riches, and knoweth not that want shall come upon him.

⁶ Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting riddle against him, and say: 'Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and that ladeth himself with many pledges!' ⁷ Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall exact interest of thee, and awake that shall violently shake thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them? ⁸ Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall spoil thee; because of men's blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all that dwell therein. ⁹ Woe to him that gaineth evil gains for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil! ¹⁰ Thou hast devised shame to thy house, by cutting off many peoples, and hast forfeited thy life. ¹¹ For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it. ¹² Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and establisheth a city by iniquity!

⁴ I cause it to go forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by My name; and it shall abide in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.'

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted, and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out; and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure, ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter.

¹⁴ Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of evil;

⁹ Amends pleadeth for fools; but among the upright there is good will.

²¹ Folly is joy to him that lacketh understanding; but a man of discernment walketh straightforwards.

¹⁸ As a madman who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death; ¹⁹ So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith: 'Am not I in sport?'

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

²⁵ For the thing which I did fear is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of hath overtaken me.

²¹ A sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

² (21:3) Thou hast given him his heart's desire, and the request of his lips Thou hast not withholden. Selah

⁴ So shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and He shall give thee the petitions of thy heart.

¹⁹ He will fulfil the desire of them that fear Him; He also will hear their cry, and will save them.

⁴ Even so I will choose their mockings, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spoke, they did not hear, but they did that which was evil in Mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

⁶ Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.

¹⁸ I will not leave you desolate; I come unto you.

²⁴ Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full.

²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries.

¹⁴ And this is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us: ¹⁵ and if we know that he heareth us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.

¹⁸ That they are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm stealeth away?

⁵ He that putteth not out his money on interest, nor taketh a bribe against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

⁹ For evil-doers shall be cut off; but those that wait for the LORD, they shall inherit the land. ¹⁰ And yet a little while, and the wicked is no more; yea, thou shalt look well at his place, and he is not.

⁹ (58:10) Before your pots can feel the thorns, He will sweep it away with a whirlwind, the raw and the burning alike.

¹⁸ Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh, so, O Lord, when Thou arousest Thyself, Thou wilt despise their semblance.

²⁷ When your dread cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when trouble and distress come upon you.

³⁰ The righteous shall never be moved; but the wicked shall not inhabit the land.

³ A man shall not be established by wickedness; but the root of the righteous shall never be moved.

⁷ The wicked are overthrown, and are not; but the house of the righteous shall stand.

²⁴ Scarce are they planted, scarce are they sown, scarce hath their stock taken root in the earth; when He bloweth upon them, they wither, and the whirlwind taketh them away as stubble.

¹⁸ And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

²⁰ being built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief corner stone,

¹⁹ laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

¹⁹ Howbeit the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his; and, Let every one that nameth the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.

¹³ As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to him that sendeth him; for he refresheth the soul of his master.

²⁰ As one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.

⁶ He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off his own feet, and drinketh damage.

⁵ That say: 'Stand by thyself, come not near to me, for I am holier than thou'; these are a smoke in My nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

²⁶ But his lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter,

¹¹ in diligence not slothful, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord,

¹² that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

³² It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be leafy. ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

¹⁵ Wilt thou keep the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream;

⁴ (21:5) He asked life of Thee, Thou gavest it him; even length of days for ever and ever.

¹¹ (34:12) Come, ye children, hearken unto me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. ¹² (34:13) Who is the man that desireth life, and loveth days, that he may see good therein? ¹³ (34:14) Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

²³ (55:24) But Thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the nethermost pit; men of blood and deceit shall not live out half their days; but as for me, I will trust in Thee.

¹⁶ With long life will I satisfy him, and make Him to behold My salvation.'

² For length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they add to thee.

¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honour.

¹¹ For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

¹⁷ Be not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish; why shouldest thou die before thy time?

¹¹ As the partridge that broodeth over young which she hath not brought forth, so is he that getteth riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days he shall leave them, and at his end he shall be a fool.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hope of the godless man shall perish;

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall have no way to flee, and their hope shall be the drooping of the soul.

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth; my flesh also dwelleth in safety;

²⁴ Thou wilt guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me with glory. ²⁵ Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And beside Thee I desire none upon earth. ²⁶ My flesh and my heart faileth; but God is the rock of my heart and my portion for ever.

⁷ When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish, and the hope of strength perisheth.

²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish. ²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that they that would pass from hence to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from thence to us.

² through whom also we have had our access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

¹² rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing stedfastly in prayer,

¹³ Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁶ Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace,

³ Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

⁶ For the LORD regardeth the way of the righteous; but the way of the wicked shall perish.

¹² (36:13) There are the workers of iniquity fallen; they are thrust down, and are not able to rise.

²⁰ For the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs - they shall pass away in smoke, they shall pass away.

⁷ (84:8) They go from strength to strength, every one of them appeareth before God in Zion.

⁷ (92:8) When the wicked spring up as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they may be destroyed for ever.

¹⁵ To do justly is joy to the righteous, but ruin to the workers of iniquity.

³¹ But they that wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

¹² And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in His name, saith the LORD.

²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works? ²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

²⁶ then shall ye begin to say, We did eat and drink in thy presence, and thou didst teach in our streets, ²⁷ and he shall say, I tell you, I know not whence ye are, depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.

⁸ but unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, shall be wrath and indignation, ⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek,

¹³ I can do all things in him that strengtheneth me.

⁸ I have set the LORD always before me; surely He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

²⁸ For the LORD loveth justice, and forsaketh not His saints; they are preserved for ever; but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. ²⁹ The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.

⁵ (52:7) God will likewise break thee for ever, He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah

¹ A Song of Ascents. They that trust in the LORD are as mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abideth for ever.

²¹ For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the whole-hearted shall remain in it. ²² But the wicked shall be cut off from the land, and the faithless shall be plucked up out of it.

²⁵ When the whirlwind passeth, the wicked is no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

²⁴ 'Son of man, they that inhabit those waste places in the land of Israel speak, saying: Abraham was one, and he inherited the land; but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance. ²⁵ Wherefore say unto them: Thus saith the Lord GOD. Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes unto your idols, and shed blood; and shall ye possess the land? ²⁶ Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbour's wife; and shall ye possess the land?

⁹ The women of My people ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their young children ye take away My glory for ever. ¹⁰ Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your resting-place; because of the uncleanness thereof, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction.

⁴¹ They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will let out the vineyard unto other husbandmen, who shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long, We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter. ³⁷ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. ³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹⁸ (31:19) Let the lying lips be dumb, which speak arrogantly against the righteous, with pride and contempt.

¹¹ (63:12) But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by Him shall glory; for the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

³ What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee, thou deceitful tongue? ⁴ Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of broom.

¹³ In the lips of him that hath discernment wisdom is found; but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

¹² To deliver thee from the way of evil, from the men that speak froward things;

¹¹ By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted; but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

⁶ The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood; but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

² The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright; but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

²⁸ The heart of the righteous studieth to answer; but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul. ⁸ The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

¹⁰ Koheleth sought to find out words of delight, and that which was written uprightly, even words of truth.

⁸ sound speech, that cannot be condemned, that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us.
