⁹ Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding; whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, that they come not near unto thee.

⁶ (92:7) A brutish man knoweth not, neither doth a fool understand this.

²⁷ Make me to understand the way of Thy precepts, that I may talk of Thy wondrous works.

⁹⁷ MEM. O how love I Thy law! It is my meditation all the day. ⁹⁸ Thy commandments make me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers; for Thy testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than mine elders, because I have keep Thy precepts.

¹⁰ For wisdom shall enter into thy heart, and knowledge shall be pleasant unto thy soul; ¹¹ Discretion shall watch over thee, discernment shall guard thee;

¹² And say: 'How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ Neither have I hearkened to the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

¹⁷ I love them that love me, and those that seek me earnestly shall find me.

³² Now therefore, ye children, hearken unto me; for happy are they that keep my ways.

⁷ He that correcteth a scorner getteth to himself shame, and he that reproveth a wicked man, it becometh unto him a blot. ⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee; reprove a wise man, and he will love thee.

¹⁰ There is grievous correction for him that forsaketh the way; and he that hateth reproof shall die.

¹ He that separateth himself seeketh his own desire, and snarlest against all sound wisdom.

³ The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib; but Israel doth not know, My people doth not consider.

¹⁰ and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish, because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

¹⁵ (9:16) The nations are sunk down in the pit that they made; in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.

⁵ Well is it with the man that dealeth graciously and lendeth, that ordereth his affairs rightfully.

³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

¹⁸ A heart that deviseth wicked thoughts, feet that are swift in running to evil;

³⁵ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.

⁸ There is no man that hath power over the wind to retain the wind; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.

⁵ The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be noble. ⁶ For the vile person will speak villainy, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise ungodliness, and to utter wickedness against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and to cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. ⁷ The instruments also of the churl are evil; he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, and the needy when he speaketh right.

²⁴ for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith; and much people was added unto the Lord.

⁷ For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; for peradventure for the good man some one would even dare to die.

³³ and blessed be thy discretion, and blessed be thou, that hast kept me this day from bloodguiltiness, and from finding redress for myself with mine own hand.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root; but suddenly I beheld his habitation cursed. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and are crushed in the gate, with none to deliver them. ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the snare gapeth for their substance.

²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall their produce bend to the earth.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment? ⁶ Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds; ⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; they that have seen him shall say: 'Where is he?' ⁸ He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found; yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night. ⁹ The eye which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him.

¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth which the keeper maketh.

⁵ He that putteth not out his money on interest, nor taketh a bribe against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

¹ A Song of Ascents. They that trust in the LORD are as mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abideth for ever. ² As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about His people, from this time forth and for ever.

²⁵ When the whirlwind passeth, the wicked is no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

¹⁷ that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, to the end that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

⁷ rooted and builded up in him, and established in your faith, even as ye were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

¹ Every wise woman buildeth her house; but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

³⁰ A tranquil heart is the life of the flesh; but envy is the rottenness of the bones.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father; and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping. ¹⁴ House and riches are the inheritance of fathers; but a prudent wife is from the LORD.

⁹ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than in a house in common with a contentious woman.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in a desert land, than with a contentious and fretful woman.

¹⁵ A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike; ¹⁶ He that would hide her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand betrayeth itself.

¹⁰ A woman of valour who can find? for her price is far above rubies. ¹¹ The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, and he hath no lack of gain. ¹² She doeth him good and not evil all the days of her life. ¹³ She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. ¹⁴ She is like the merchant-ships; she bringeth her food from afar. ¹⁵ She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth food to her household, and a portion to her maidens. ¹⁶ She considereth a field, and buyeth it; with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. ¹⁷ She girdeth her loins with strength, and maketh strong her arms. ¹⁸ She perceiveth that her merchandise is good; her lamp goeth not out by night. ¹⁹ She layeth her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. ²⁰ She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. ²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household; for all her household are clothed with scarlet. ²² She maketh for herself coverlets; her clothing is fine linen and purple. ²³ Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. ²⁴ She maketh linen garments and selleth them; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. ²⁵ Strength and dignity are her clothing; and she laugheth at the time to come.

¹⁶ When I heard, mine inward parts trembled, my lips quivered at the voice; rottenness entereth into my bones, and I tremble where I stand; that I should wait for the day of trouble, when he cometh up against the people that he invadeth.

⁷ For a man indeed ought not to have his head veiled, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of the man.

¹¹ Nevertheless, neither is the woman without the man, nor the man without the woman, in the Lord.

² (12:3) They speak falsehood every one with his neighbour; with flattering lip, and with a double heart, do they speak. ³ (12:4) May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that speaketh proud things!

² (36:3) For it flattereth him in his eyes, until his iniquity be found, and he be hated. ³ (36:4) The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he hath left off to be wise, to do good. ⁴ (36:5) He deviseth iniquity upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.

⁶ (41:7) And if one come to see me, he speaketh falsehood; his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad, he speaketh of it. ⁷ (41:8) All that hate me whisper together against me, against me do they devise my hurt:

¹⁵ I will meditate in Thy precepts, and have respect unto Thy ways.

²³ The desire of the righteous is only good; but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

⁹ The thought of foolishness is sin; and the scorner is an abomination to men.

⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the man of iniquity his thoughts; and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have compassion upon him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thy heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy baleful thoughts lodge within thee?

³ And when Herod the king heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ And gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born. ⁵ And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for thus it is written through the prophet, ⁶ And thou Bethlehem, land of Judah, Art in no wise least among the princes of Judah; For out of thee shall come forth a governor, Who shall be shepherd of my people Israel. ⁷ Then Herod privily called the Wise-men, and learned of them exactly what time the star appeared. ⁸ And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search out exactly concerning the young child, and when ye have found him, bring me word, that I also may come and worship him.

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the Wise-men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had exactly learned of the Wise-men.

⁴ and they took counsel together that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.

⁵ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts, and then shall each man have his praise from God.

² but we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by the manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

¹ Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom: 'Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night; ² and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only; ³ and I will bring back all the people unto thee; when all shall have returned, save the man whom thou seekest, all the people will be in peace.' ⁴ And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

⁷ And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and the exact sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them. ⁸ Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given out in Shushan to destroy them, to show it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her; and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him, for her people. ⁹ And Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai. ¹⁰ Then Esther spoke unto Hathach, and gave him a message unto Mordecai: ¹¹ 'All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live; but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.' ¹² And they told to Mordecai Esther's words. ¹³ Then Mordecai bade them to return answer unto Esther: 'Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews. ¹⁴ For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then will relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father's house will perish; and who knoweth whether thou art not come to royal estate for such a time as this?'

⁴ for we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my peace, for the adversary is not worthy that the king be endamaged.' ⁵ Then spoke the king Ahasuerus and said unto Esther the queen: 'Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?' ⁶ And Esther said: 'An adversary and an enemy, even this wicked Haman.' Then Haman was terrified before the king and the queen.

¹¹ If they say: 'Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk for the innocent without cause; ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as the grave, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; ¹³ We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil; ¹⁴ Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse' - ¹⁵ My son, walk not thou in the way with them, restrain thy foot from their path; ¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. ¹⁷ For in vain the net is spread in the eyes of any bird; ¹⁸ And these lie in wait for their own blood, they lurk for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

³ In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride; but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity, desolation and destruction are in their paths.

²⁶ For among My people are found wicked men; they pry, as fowlers lie in wait; they set a trap, they catch men.

¹ Woe is me! for I am as the last of the summer fruits, as the grape gleanings of the vintage; there is no cluster to eat; nor first-ripe fig which my soul desireth. ² The godly man is perished out of the earth, and the upright among men is no more; they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.

¹² And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

¹⁵ Now therefore do ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to-morrow, as though ye would judge of his case more exactly; and we, before he comes near, are ready to slay him.

³ asking a favor against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying a plot to kill him on the way.

¹⁴ And the king commanded it so to be done; and a decree was given out in Shushan; and they hanged Haman's ten sons.

¹⁸ He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth which the keeper maketh. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but there shall be not to gather; he openeth his eyes, and his wealth is not. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters; a tempest stealeth him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; and it sweepeth him out of his place. ²² Yea, it hurleth at him, and spareth not; he would fain flee from its power. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

²⁵ Therefore He taketh knowledge of their works; and He overturneth them in the night, so that they are crushed.

¹⁰ And yet a little while, and the wicked is no more; yea, thou shalt look well at his place, and he is not.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a leafy tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not; yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. ³⁷ Mark the man of integrity, and behold the upright; for there is a future for the man of peace.

¹⁸ Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors.

²¹ My hand upon it! the evil man shall not be unpunished; but the seed of the righteous shall escape.

¹¹ The house of the wicked shall be overthrown; but the tent of the upright shall flourish.

²⁵ The LORD will pluck up the house of the proud; but He will establish the border of the widow.

³ Through wisdom is a house builded; and by understanding it is established; ⁴ And by knowledge are the chambers filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

²⁴ Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock; ²⁵ and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell not; for it was founded upon the rock. ²⁶ And every one that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; ²⁷ and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house, and it fell; and great was the fall thereof.

³⁹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: 'Forasmuch as God hath shown thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou.

¹³ And Samuel said to Saul: 'Thou hast done foolishly; thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which He commanded thee; for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

¹⁸ Then answered one of the young men, and said: 'Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valour, and a man of war, and prudent in affairs, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.'

³⁰ Then the princes of the Philistines went forth; and it came to pass, as often as they went forth, that David prospered more than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

¹⁷ Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his house; for he is such a base fellow, that one cannot speak to him.'

¹⁸ His enemies will I clothe with shame; but upon himself shall his crown shine.'

²⁶ I also, in your calamity, will laugh, I will mock when your dread cometh;

³⁵ The wise shall inherit honour; but as for the fools, they carry away shame.

²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall reel.

¹ Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face is changed.

² And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to reproaches and everlasting abhorrence.

⁸ But ye are turned aside out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble in the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. ⁹ Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept My ways, but have had respect of persons in the law.

⁴ saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou to it. ⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed, and he went away and hanged himself.

⁴² And the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall set over his household servants, to give them their portion of food in due season? ⁴³ Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. ⁴⁴ Of a truth I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath.

⁸ And his lord commended the unrighteous steward because he had done wisely; for the sons of this world are for their own generation wiser than the sons of the light.

²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not glory to God; and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

¹⁰ According to the grace of God which was given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder I laid a foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let each man take heed how he buildeth thereon. ¹¹ For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. ¹² But if any man buildeth on the foundation gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, stubble, ¹³ each man's work shall be made manifest; for the day shall declare it, because it is revealed in fire, and the fire itself shall prove each man's work of what sort it is. ¹⁴ If any man's work shall abide which he built thereon, he shall receive a reward. ¹⁵ If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire.

¹⁸ For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.

⁷ There is that pretendeth himself rich, yet hath nothing; there is that pretendeth himself poor, yet hath great wealth.

¹¹ For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹³ And he said unto him: 'My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds giving suck are a care to me; and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die. ¹⁴ Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant; and I will journey on gently, according to the pace of the cattle that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.'

²⁶ And Judah said unto his brethren: 'What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? ²⁷ Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh.' And his brethren hearkened unto him. ²⁸ And there passed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt.

²⁸ And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam: 'What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?' ²⁹ And Balaam said unto the ass: 'Because thou hast mocked me; I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I had killed thee.' ³⁰ And the ass said unto Balaam: 'Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden all thy life long unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee?' And he said: 'Nay.' ³¹ Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face. ³² And the angel of the LORD said unto him: 'Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because thy way is contrary unto me;

⁴ Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn.

⁷ And Adoni-bezek said: 'Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered food under my table; as I have done, so God hath requited me.' And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

² And Nahash the Ammonite said unto them: 'On this condition will I make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.'

¹¹ The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; whence then hast thou that living water?

³¹ The Jews therefore, because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remain on the cross upon the sabbath (for the day of that sabbath was a high day), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. ³² The soldiers therefore came, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him:

¹³ For judgment is without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy; mercy glorieth against judgment. ¹⁴ What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him? ¹⁵ And if a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled, and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body, what doth it profit?

¹⁷ But whoso hath the world's goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him?

¹⁹ In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.'

⁴ And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.

⁴ I have not sat with men of falsehood; neither will I go in with dissemblers.

² When thou eatest the labour of thy hands, happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and walk not in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it; turn from it, and pass on.

³² He that committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; he doeth it that would destroy his own soul.

⁷ And I beheld among the thoughtless ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

⁶ Forsake all thoughtlessness, and live; and walk in the way of understanding.

¹³ The woman Folly is riotous; she is thoughtless, and knoweth nothing.

¹⁶ 'Whoso is thoughtless, let him turn in hither'; and as for him that lacketh understanding, she saith to him:

²⁰ He that walketh with wise men shall be wise; but the companion of fools shall smart for it.

²³ Much food is in the tillage of the poor; but there is that is swept away by want of righteousness.

⁴ Where no oxen are, the crib is clean; but much increase is by the strength of the ox.

²³ In all labour there is profit; but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

²⁷ And there will be goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household; and maintenance for thy maidens.

¹⁹ He that tilleth his ground shall have plenty of bread; but he that followeth after vain things shall have poverty enough.

⁸ (2:9) They that regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have whereof to give to him that hath need.

¹¹ and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you, ¹² that ye may walk becomingly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing.

⁸ neither did we eat bread for nought at any man's hand, but in labor and travail, working night and day, that we might not burden any of you:

¹⁰ For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision, ¹¹ whose mouths must be stopped, men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

³ And he shall be like a tree planted by streams of water, that bringeth forth its fruit in its season, and whose leaf doth not wither; and in whatsoever he doeth he shall prosper.

⁹ He lieth in wait in a secret place as a lion in his lair, he lieth in wait to catch the poor; he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him up in his net.

¹⁵ The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the ruin of the poor is their poverty.

⁵ A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his steps. ⁶ In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare; but the righteous doth sing and rejoice.

⁶ In days to come shall Jacob take root, Israel shall blossom and bud; and the face of the world shall be filled with fruitage.

³¹ And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

²⁶ For among My people are found wicked men; they pry, as fowlers lie in wait; they set a trap, they catch men. ²⁷ As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit; therefore they are become great, and waxen rich; ²⁸ They are waxen fat, they are become sleek; yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they might make it to prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

⁷ Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose trust the LORD is. ⁸ For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out its roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but its foliage shall be luxuriant; and shall not be anxious in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

² The godly man is perished out of the earth, and the upright among men is no more; they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.

¹⁵ They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag; therefore they rejoice and exult. ¹⁶ Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and offer unto their drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their food plenteous. ¹⁷ Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare to slay the nations continually?

¹³ And those on the rock are they who, when they have heard, receive the word with joy, and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. ¹⁴ And that which fell among the thorns, these are they that have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. ¹⁵ And that in the good ground, these are such as in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast, and bring forth fruit with patience.

⁵ I am the vine, ye are the branches; He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit; for apart from me ye can do nothing.

¹⁶ Ye did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that ye should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide; that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

²² But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end eternal life.

¹⁶ the angel who hath redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named in them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.'

⁹ And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them: 'As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

²³ Then king Solomon swore by the LORD, saying: 'God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.

⁶ (5:7) Thou destroyest them that speak falsehood; the LORD abhorreth the man of blood and of deceit.

¹⁹ (34:20) Many are the ills of the righteous, but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

⁸ (64:9) So they make their own tongue a stumbling unto themselves; all that see them shake the head.

² Thou art snared by the words of thy mouth, thou art caught by the words of thy mouth -

⁸ The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.

² The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright; but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

²³ Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

¹⁸ It is good that thou shouldest take hold of the one; yea, also from the other withdraw not thy hand; for he that feareth God shall discharge himself of them all.

²⁴ (6:25) And the king commanded, and they brought those men that had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and they had not come to the bottom of the den, when the lions had the mastery of them, and broke all their bones in pieces.

²⁵ And all the people answered and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long, We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter. ³⁷ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

⁹ the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment,

⁵ (63:6) My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth doth praise Thee with joyful lips;

² A man shall eat good from the fruit of his mouth; but the desire of the faithless is violence.

²³ A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth; and a word in due season, how good is it!

²⁰ A man's belly shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; with the increase of his lips shall he be satisfied. ²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that indulge it shall eat the fruit thereof.

¹⁰ Say ye of the righteous, that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. ¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him; for the work of his hands shall be done to him.

⁴¹ He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. ⁴² And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you he shall in no wise lose his reward.

²⁷ For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then shall he render unto every man according to his deeds.

⁶ if so be that it is a righteous thing with God to recompense affliction to them that afflict you, ⁷ and to you that are afflicted rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of his power

² For if the word spoken through angels proved stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward,

²⁶ accounting the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked unto the recompense of reward.

⁵ That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning, and the man of understanding may attain unto wise counsels;

⁷ Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the LORD, and depart from evil;

⁹ Give to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

¹² There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

¹⁶ A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil; but the fool behaveth overbearingly, and is confident.

² All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.

²⁵ There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

²⁰ Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the hearts.

¹² Seest thou a man wise in his own eyes? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men that give wise answer.

¹¹ The rich man is wise in his own eyes; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him through.

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not washed from their filthiness.

¹³ Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king, who knoweth not how to receive admonition any more.

¹⁵ Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah: 'If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken unto me.' ¹⁶ So Zedekiah the king swore secretly unto Jeremiah, saying: 'As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.' ¹⁷ Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah: 'Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If thou wilt go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, thou, and thy house; ¹⁸ but if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.' ¹⁹ And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah: 'I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.' ²⁰ But Jeremiah said: 'They shall not deliver thee. Hearken, I beseech thee, to the voice of the LORD, in that which I speak unto thee; so it shall be well with thee, and thy soul shall live. ²¹ But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD hath shown me: ²² Behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say: Thy familiar friends have set thee on, and have prevailed over thee; thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back. ²³ And they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans; and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon; and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.' ²⁴ Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah: 'Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die. ²⁵ But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee: Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king; hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee; ²⁶ then thou shalt say unto them: I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.' ²⁷ Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not reported. ²⁸ So Jeremiah abode in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken. And it came to pass, when Jerusalem was taken -

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

³ For if a man thinketh himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him: 'Thou son of perverse rebellion, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own shame, and unto the shame of thy mother's nakedness? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the earth, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he deserveth to die.' ³² And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him: 'Wherefore should he be put to death? what hath he done?' ³³ And Saul cast his spear at him to smite him; whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to put David to death. ³⁴ So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, and because his father had put him to shame.

¹ And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. ² Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying: 'So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time.'

¹² Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love covereth all transgressions.

³³ In the heart of him that hath discernment wisdom resteth; but in the inward part of fools it maketh itself known.

²² Understanding is a fountain of life unto him that hath it; but folly is the chastisement of fools.

⁹ He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that harpeth on a matter estrangeth a familiar friend.

²⁸ Like a city broken down and without a wall, so is he whose spirit is without restraint.

¹¹ A fool spendeth all his spirit; but a wise man stilleth it within him.

¹⁹ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said: 'And who among all thy servants is so trusted as David, who is the king's son- in-law, and giveth heed unto thy bidding, and is honourable in thy house? ¹⁵ Have I to-day begun to inquire of God for him? be it far from me; let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for thy servant knoweth nothing of all this, less or more.'

¹⁹ A false witness that breatheth out lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

⁵ A faithful witness will not lie; but a false witness breatheth forth lies.

²⁵ A true witness delivereth souls; but he that breatheth forth lies is all deceit.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that breatheth forth lies shall not escape.

²⁸ An ungodly witness mocketh at right; and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.

²⁸ A false witness shall perish; but the man that obeyeth shall speak unchallenged.

²⁸ Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.

¹⁹ For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings;

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, and elders, and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death,

¹³ and set up false witnesses, who said, This man ceaseth not to speak words against this holy place, and the law:

¹⁶ having a good conscience, that, wherein they may speak against you as evildoers, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ.

² (52:4) Thy tongue deviseth destruction; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

⁴ (57:5) My soul is among lions, I do lie down among them that are aflame; even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁷ (59:8) Behold, they belch out with their mouth; swords are in their lips: 'For who doth hear?'

³ (64:4) Who have whet their tongue like a sword, and have aimed their arrow, a poisoned word;

²² For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

²⁰ The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many; but the foolish die for want of understanding.

¹⁷ A wicked messenger falleth into evil; but a faithful ambassador is health.

⁴ A soothing tongue is a tree of life; but perverseness therein is a wound to the spirit.

⁷ The lips of the wise disperse knowledge; but the heart of the foolish is not stedfast.

²⁴ Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

¹⁸ As a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow, so is a man that beareth false witness against his neighbour.

³³ And they that are wise among the people shall cause the many to understand; yet they shall stumble by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by spoil, many days.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity. Thus is the tongue set among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, it is full of deadly poison.

¹⁶ And he had in his right hand seven stars; and out of his mouth proceeded a sharp two-edged sword; and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

² in the midst of the street thereof. And on this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve manner of fruits, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment?

⁴ (52:6) Thou lovest all devouring words, the deceitful tongue. ⁵ (52:7) God will likewise break thee for ever, He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that breatheth forth lies shall perish.

⁴ Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying: Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Return ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings; but they did not hear, nor attend unto Me, saith the LORD. ⁵ Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever? ⁶ But My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? so that they turned and said: Like as the LORD of hosts purposed to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath He dealt with us.'

³⁵ Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

³ But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart, for thee to lie to the Holy Spirit, and for thee to keep back part of the price of the land? ⁴ While it remained, did it not remain thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. ⁵ And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost; and great fear came upon all that heard these things. ⁶ And the young men arose and wrapped him round, and they carried him out and buried him. ⁷ And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. ⁸ And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she said, Yea, for so much. ⁹ But Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to try the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out. ¹⁰ And she fell down immediately at his feet, and gave up the ghost; and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband.

²⁴ He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, but he layeth up deceit within him. ²⁵ When he speaketh fair, believe him not; for there are seven abominations in his heart. ²⁶ Though his hatred be concealed with deceit, his wickedness shall be revealed before the congregation.

⁶ (9:5) For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called Pele- joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom; ⁷ (9:6) That the government may be increased, and of peace there be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it through justice and through righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts doth perform this.

¹⁶ As for me, I have not hastened from being a shepherd after Thee; neither have I desired the woeful day; Thou knowest it; that which came out of my lips was manifest before Thee.

¹³ even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and there shall be a priest before his throne; and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called sons of God.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, evil thoughts proceed, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² thefts, covetings, wickednesses, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, railing, pride, foolishness;

¹⁴ And when they were come, they say unto him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest not for any one, for thou regardest not the person of men, but of a truth teachest the way of God; Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? ¹⁵ Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why make ye trial of me? bring me a denarius, that I may see it. ¹⁶ And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's. ¹⁷ And Jesus answering said unto them, Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. And they marveled greatly at him.

²⁹ being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity, whisperers,

¹⁴ Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:

⁸ Finally, be ye all likeminded, compassionate, loving as brethren, tenderhearted, courteous: ⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling, but contrariwise blessing, knowing that hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing. ¹⁰ For, He that would love life, And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips that they speak no guile: ¹¹ Let him turn away from evil, and do good, Let him seek peace, and pursue it. ¹² For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, And his ears unto their supplication; But the face of the Lord is upon them that do evil. ¹³ And who is he that will harm you, if ye be imitators of that which is good?

¹⁰ There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent.

¹⁴ The dissembler in heart shall have his fill from his own ways; and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.

¹² Moreover thou shalt speak unto them this word: Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel: 'Every bottle is filled with wine'; and when they shall say unto thee: 'Do we not know that every bottle is filled with wine?' ¹³ Then shalt thou say unto them: Thus saith the LORD: Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David's throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness. ¹⁴ And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD; I will not pity, nor spare, nor have compassion, that I should not destroy them.

¹⁶ Thou art filled with shame instead of glory, drink thou also, and be uncovered; the cup of the LORD'S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and filthiness shall be upon thy glory.

²⁸ And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose.

²² whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come, all are yours, ²³ and ye are Christ's, and Christ is God's.

¹⁷ For our light affliction, which is for the moment, worketh for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory,

¹³ And who is he that will harm you, if ye be imitators of that which is good?

⁶ Render unto her even as she rendered, and double unto her the double according to her works; in the cup which she mingled, mingle unto her double.

¹⁶ There are six things which the LORD hateth, yea, seven which are an abomination unto Him: ¹⁷ Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;

¹ A false balance is an abomination to the LORD; but a perfect weight is His delight.

²⁰ They that are perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD; but such as are upright in their way are His delight.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD; but the prayer of the upright is His delight.

¹⁵ (9:14) The elder and the man of rank, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

²⁴ (9:23) But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth, and knoweth Me, that I am the LORD who exercise mercy, justice, and righteousness, in the earth; for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

¹⁹ And ye have profaned Me among My people for handfuls of barley and for crumbs of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to My people that hearken unto lies.

²² Because with lies ye have cowed the heart of the righteous, when I have not grieved him; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, that he be saved alive;

⁸ But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and sinners, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

¹⁵ Without are the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the fornicators, and the murderers, and the idolaters, and every one that loveth and maketh a lie.

¹⁴ Wise men lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is an imminent ruin.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

¹³ He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets; but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth a matter.

¹⁶ Every prudent man dealeth with forethought; but a fool unfoldeth folly.

³ Yea also, when a fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself. ¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is grievous madness. ¹⁴ A fool also multiplieth words; yet man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?

¹⁵ For he saw a resting-place that it was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant under task-work

²¹ even their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel were not able utterly to destroy, of them did Solomon raise a levy of bondservants, unto this day.

²⁸ And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour; and Solomon saw the young man that he was industrious, and he gave him charge over all the labour of the house of Joseph.

²⁰ And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was returned, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel; there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

⁴ He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

²⁷ The slothful man shall not hunt his prey; but the precious substance of men is to be diligent.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be abundantly gratified.

² A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that dealeth shamefully, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and the idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁵ The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. ²⁶ There is that coveteth greedily all the day long; but the righteous giveth and spareth not.

¹³ The sluggard saith: 'There is a lion without; I shall be slain in the streets.'

²⁹ Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thistles, the face thereof was covered with nettles, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. ³² Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction. ³³ 'Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep' - ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.

¹³ The sluggard saith: 'There is a lion in the way; yea, a lion is in the streets.' ¹⁴ The door is turning upon its hinges, and the sluggard is still upon his bed. ¹⁵ The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish; it wearieth him to bring it back to his mouth. ¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men that give wise answer.

¹ And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, that I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. ² And the king said unto me: 'Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart.' Then I was very sore afraid.

⁶ (38:7) I am bent and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day.

¹¹ (42:12) Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why moanest thou within me? Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the salvation of my countenance, and my God.

¹⁸ There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword; but the tongue of the wise is health.

¹⁰ The heart knoweth its own bitterness; and with its joy no stranger can intermeddle.

¹³ A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance; but by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.

¹⁵ All the days of the poor are evil; but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

²² A merry heart is a good medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

¹⁴ The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a broken spirit who can bear?

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

⁹ Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart; so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

⁴ The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of them that are taught, that I should know how to sustain with words him that is weary; He wakeneth morning by morning, He wakeneth mine ear to hear as they that are taught.

¹³ And the LORD answered the angel that spoke with me with good words, even comforting words -

³³ And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly amazed, and sore troubled. ³⁴ And he saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death; abide ye here, and watch.

⁴ For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears, not that ye should be made sorry, but that ye might know the love that I have more abundantly unto you. ⁵ But if any hath caused sorrow, he hath caused sorrow, not to me, but in part (that I press not too heavily) to you all. ⁶ Sufficient to such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the many, ⁷ so that contrariwise ye should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his overmuch sorrow.

³ As for the holy that are in the earth, they are the excellent in whom is all my delight.

¹² (18:13) At the brightness before Him, there passed through His thick clouds hailstones and coals of fire. ¹³ (18:14) The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High gave forth His voice; hailstones and coals of fire.

¹³ In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man; but the righteous cometh out of trouble.

²⁷ He that spareth his words hath knowledge; and he that husbandeth his spirit is a man of discernment.

⁴⁶ For if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? ⁴⁷ And if ye salute your friends only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? ⁴⁸ Ye therefore shall be perfect, even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.

³² And if ye love them that love you, what thank have ye? for even sinners love those that love them. ³³ And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thank have ye? for even sinners do the same. ³⁴ And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do them good, and lend, never despairing, and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. ³⁶ Be ye merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

¹³ Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God, for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man: ¹⁴ but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.

¹⁸ Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. ¹⁹ For this is acceptable, if for conscience toward God a man endureth griefs, suffering wrongfully. ²⁰ For what glory is it, if, when ye sin, and are buffeted for it, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye shall take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. ²¹ For hereunto were ye called; because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that ye should follow his steps:

¹⁸ For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who have indeed escaped from them that live in error, ¹⁹ promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption, for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage. ²⁰ For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first. ²¹ For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.

²⁶ These things have I written unto you concerning them that would lead you astray.

⁹ And the great dragon was cast down, the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world, he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him.

¹⁴ And he deceiveth mine own people, even them that dwell on the earth by reason of the signs which it was given him to do in the sight of the beast, saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast having the stroke of the sword and lived.

¹⁶ Better is a little that the righteous hath than the abundance of many wicked.

¹⁶ Better is little with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure and turmoil therewith.

⁸ Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues with injustice.

² And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

¹⁵ The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish; it wearieth him to bring it back to his mouth.

¹⁵ See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil,

¹¹ For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

¹⁶ The wages of the righteous is life; the increase of the wicked is sin.

¹⁹ Stedfast righteousness tendeth to life; but he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

⁹ hath walked in My statutes, and hath kept Mine ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

²⁰ The soul that sinneth, it shall die; the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father with him, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son with him; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. ²¹ But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all My statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. ²² None of his transgressions that he hath committed shall be remembered against him; for his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. ²³ Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD; and not rather that he should return from his ways, and live? ²⁴ But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? None of his righteous deeds that he hath done shall be remembered; for his trespass that he trespassed, and for his sin that he hath sinned, for them shall he die.

²¹ that, as sin reigned in death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

²² But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end eternal life. ²³ For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹¹ For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men, ¹² instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world,

²⁹ If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is begotten of him.

⁷ Little children, let no man lead you astray; he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous:

¹¹ Beloved, imitate not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God; he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
