¹ He that separateth himself seeketh his own desire, and snarlest against all sound wisdom. ² A fool hath no delight in understanding, but only that his heart may lay itself bare. ³ When the wicked cometh, there cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach. ⁴ The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters; a flowing brook, a fountain of wisdom. ⁵ It is not good to respect the person of the wicked, so as to turn aside the righteous in judgment. ⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul. ⁸ The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. ⁹ Even one that is slack in his work is brother to him that is a destroyer. ¹⁰ The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is set up on high. ¹¹ The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his own conceit. ¹² Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, and before honour goeth humility. ¹³ He that giveth answer before he heareth, it is folly and confusion unto him. ¹⁴ The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a broken spirit who can bear? ¹⁵ The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge. ¹⁶ A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men. ¹⁷ He that pleadeth his cause first seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him out. ¹⁸ The lot causeth strife to cease, and parteth asunder the contentious. ¹⁹ A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city; and their contentions are like the bars of a castle. ²⁰ A man's belly shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; with the increase of his lips shall he be satisfied. ²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that indulge it shall eat the fruit thereof. ²² Whoso findeth a wife findeth a great good, and obtaineth favour of the LORD. ²³ The poor useth entreaties; but the rich answereth impudently. ²⁴ There are friends that one hath to his own hurt; but there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

¹⁶ For wherein now shall it be known that I have found grace in Thy sight, I and Thy people? is it not in that Thou goest with us, so that we are distinguished, I and Thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth?'

¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and lay up my commandments with thee; ² So that thou make thine ear attend unto wisdom, and thy heart incline to discernment; ³ Yea, if thou call for understanding, and lift up thy voice for discernment; ⁴ If thou seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom, out of His mouth cometh knowledge and discernment;

¹⁰ The heart knoweth its own bitterness; and with its joy no stranger can intermeddle.

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water; therefore leave off contention, before the quarrel break out.

³ It is an honour for a man to keep aloof from strife; but every fool will be snarling.

¹⁹ He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that openeth wide his lips.

²¹ My son, fear thou the LORD and the king, and meddle not with them that are given to change;

¹⁷ He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife not his own, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

⁸ Yea, in the way of Thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for Thee; to Thy name and to Thy memorial is the desire of our soul. ⁹ With my soul have I desired Thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me have I sought Thee earnestly; for when Thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.

¹⁷ I sat not in the assembly of them that make merry, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of Thy hand; for Thou hast filled me with indignation.

³ and to speak unto the priests of the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying: 'Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?'

¹¹ And he answered and said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid, and in his joy he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

³⁵ And in the morning, a great while before day, he rose up and went out, and departed into a desert place, and there prayed.

¹¹ And he said unto them, Unto you is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but unto them that are without, all things are done in parables;

¹ Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

¹⁷ Wherefore Come ye out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, And touch no unclean thing, And I will receive you,

¹⁵ Look therefore carefully how ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise, ¹⁶ redeeming the time, because the days are evil. ¹⁷ Wherefore be ye not foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

¹⁹ These are they who make separations, sensual, having not the Spirit.

¹⁵ And he took up his parable, and said: The saying of Balaam the son of Beor, and the saying of the man whose eye is opened; ¹⁶ The saying of him who heareth the words of God, and knoweth the knowledge of the Most High, who seeth the vision of the Almighty, fallen down, yet with opened eyes:

¹ Happy is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the wicked, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of the scornful. ² But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in His law doth he meditate day and night.

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and discipline.

²² 'How long, ye thoughtless, will ye love thoughtlessness? And how long will scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

²³ A prudent man concealeth knowledge; but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

¹⁶ Every prudent man dealeth with forethought; but a fool unfoldeth folly.

¹⁶ Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he hath no understanding?

³ Yea also, when a fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

³⁴ And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart from their borders.

¹ Now concerning things sacrificed to idols; We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but love edifieth.

¹² So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church.

¹⁵ Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife, and some also of good will:

¹⁵ having forsaken the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing, ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression; a dumb ass spake with man's voice and stayed the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are springs without water, clouds driven by a storm, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever. ¹⁸ For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who have indeed escaped from them that live in error, ¹⁹ promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption, for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage.

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him: 'Thou son of perverse rebellion, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own shame, and unto the shame of thy mother's nakedness?

⁴ (3:36) Hear, O our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach upon their own head, and give them up to spoiling in a land of captivity;

⁹ (69:10) Because zeal for Thy house hath eaten me up, and the reproaches of them that reproach Thee are fallen upon me.

²⁰ (69:21) Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am sore sick; and I looked for some to show compassion, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

³ Be gracious unto us, O LORD, be gracious unto us; for we are full sated with contempt. ⁴ Our soul is full sated with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud oppressors.

² When pride cometh, then cometh shame; but with the lowly is wisdom.

¹⁰ Cast out the scorner, and contention will go out; yea, strife and shame will cease.

¹⁶ When the wicked are increased, transgression increaseth; but the righteous shall gaze upon their fall.

³⁹ And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself; if thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross. ⁴¹ And in like manner also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders and Pharisees, said, ⁴² He saved others, himself he cannot save. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him. ⁴³ He trusteth on God, let him deliver him now, if he desireth him; for he said, I am the Son of God. ⁴⁴ And the robbers also that were crucified with him cast upon him the same reproach.

⁴ wherein they think strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

¹⁴ If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are ye, because the Spirit of glory and the Spirit of God resteth upon you; on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

² I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter dark sayings concerning days of old;

¹¹ The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence.

¹⁴ The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

²² Understanding is a fountain of life unto him that hath it; but folly is the chastisement of fools.

⁵ Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

³⁴ Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

¹⁴ but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up unto eternal life.

³⁸ He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water. ³⁹ But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

¹⁶ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto the Lord.

⁶ Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer each one.

¹⁵ Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment; thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor favour the person of the mighty; but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.

¹⁶ And I charged your judges at that time, saying: 'Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. ¹⁷ Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of any man; for the judgment is God's; and the cause that is too hard for you ye shall bring unto me, and I will hear it.'

¹⁹ Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons; neither shalt thou take a gift; for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

⁹ And she wrote in the letters, saying: 'Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people; ¹⁰ and set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them bear witness against him, saying: Thou didst curse God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he die.' ¹¹ And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who dwelt in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people. ¹³ And the two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him; and the base fellows bore witness against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying: 'Naboth did curse God and the king.' Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying: 'Naboth is stoned, and is dead.'

⁷ Will ye speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for Him? ⁸ Will ye show Him favour? Will ye contend for God?

¹⁹ That respecteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? For they all are the work of His hands.

² 'How long will ye judge unjustly, and respect the persons of the wicked? Selah

¹⁵ He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, even they both are an abomination to the LORD.

²³ These also are sayings of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.

²¹ To have respect of persons is not good; for a man will transgress for a piece of bread.

²³ That justify the wicked for a reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

¹⁴ And justice is turned away backward, and righteousness standeth afar off; for truth hath stumbled in the broad place, and uprightness cannot enter.

³ Their hands are upon that which is evil to do it diligently; the prince asketh, and the judge is ready for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth the evil desire of his soul; thus they weave it together.

¹⁶ And they send to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one; for thou regardest not the person of men.

¹⁶ A fool's vexation is presently known; but a prudent man concealeth shame.

¹⁰ By pride cometh only contention; but with the well-advised is wisdom.

³ In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride; but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

¹⁶ A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil; but the fool behaveth overbearingly, and is confident.

²⁷ An ungodly man diggeth up evil, and in his lips there is as a burning fire. ²⁸ A froward man soweth strife; and a whisperer separateth familiar friends.

¹⁹ A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment; for if thou interpose, thou wilt add thereto.

²⁹ Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

²⁴ Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; and with a wrathful man thou shalt not go; ²⁵ Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

²⁴ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than in a house in common with a contentious woman.

³ A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's vexation is heavier than they both.

⁹ If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he be angry or laugh, there will be no rest.

³⁵ And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said: 'Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art become my troubler; for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.'

²⁴ And the men of Israel were distressed that day; but Saul adjured the people, saying: 'Cursed be the man that eateth any food until it be evening, and I be avenged on mine enemies.' So none of the people tasted food. ²⁵ And all the people came into the forest; and there was honey upon the ground. ²⁶ And when the people were come unto the forest, behold a flow of honey; but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath. ²⁷ But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath; and he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes brightened. ²⁸ Then answered one of the people, and said: 'Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying: Cursed be the man that eateth food this day; and the people are faint.' ²⁹ Then said Jonathan: 'My father hath troubled the land; see, I pray you, how mine eyes are brightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. ³⁰ How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to-day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? had there not been then a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?' ³¹ And they smote of the Philistines that day from Michmas to Aijalon; and the people were very faint. ³² And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground; and the people did eat them with the blood. ³³ Then they told Saul, saying: 'Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood.' And he said: 'Ye have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone unto me this day.' ³⁴ And Saul said: 'Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them: Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood.' And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there. ³⁵ And Saul built an altar unto the LORD; the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD. ³⁶ And Saul said: 'Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them.' And they said: 'Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee.' Then said the priest: 'Let us draw near hither unto God.' ³⁷ And Saul asked counsel of God: 'Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt Thou deliver them into the hand of Israel?' But He answered him not that day. ³⁸ And Saul said: 'Draw nigh hither, all ye chiefs of the people; and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day. ³⁹ For, as the LORD liveth, who saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.' But there was not a man among all the people that answered him. ⁴⁰ Then said he unto all Israel: 'Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.' And the people said unto Saul: 'Do what seemeth good unto thee.' ⁴¹ Therefore Saul said unto the LORD, the God of Israel: 'Declare the right.' And Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot; but the people escaped. ⁴² And Saul said: 'Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.' And Jonathan was taken. ⁴³ Then Saul said to Jonathan: 'Tell me what thou hast done.' And Jonathan told him, and said: 'I did certainly taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; here am I: I will die.' ⁴⁴ And Saul said: 'God do so and more also; thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.' ⁴⁵ And the people said unto Saul: 'Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? Far from it; as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day.' So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not. ⁴⁶ Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

⁸ (64:9) So they make their own tongue a stumbling unto themselves; all that see them shake the head.

⁹ (140:10) As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

² Thou art snared by the words of thy mouth, thou art caught by the words of thy mouth -

⁸ The wise in heart will receive commandments; but a prating fool shall fall.

¹⁴ Wise men lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is an imminent ruin.

¹³ In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man; but the righteous cometh out of trouble.

³ He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life; but for him that openeth wide his lips there shall be ruin.

¹¹ If the serpent bite before it is charmed, then the charmer hath no advantage. ¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself. ¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is grievous madness. ¹⁴ A fool also multiplieth words; yet man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?

²³ And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. ²⁴ And she went out, and said unto her mother, What will I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. ²⁵ And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist. ²⁶ And the king was exceeding sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat with him, he would not reject her. ²⁷ And straightway the king sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring his head: ²⁸ and he went and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother.

¹⁴ And they came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. ¹⁵ Now therefore do ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to-morrow, as though ye would judge of his case more exactly; and we, before he comes near, are ready to slay him. ¹⁶ But Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the castle and told Paul. ¹⁷ And Paul called unto him one of the centurions, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain, for he hath something to tell him. ¹⁸ So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and saith, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and asked me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say to thee. ¹⁹ And the chief captain took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, What is it that thou hast to tell me? ²⁰ And he said, The Jews have agreed to ask thee to bring down Paul tomorrow unto the council, as though thou wouldest inquire somewhat more exactly concerning him. ²¹ Do not thou therefore yield unto them; for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, who have bound themselves under a curse, neither to eat nor to drink till they have slain him; and now are they ready, looking for the promise from thee. ²² So the chief captain let the young man go, charging him, Tell no man that thou hast signified these things to me.

¹⁶ Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people; neither shalt thou stand idly by the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

² (52:4) Thy tongue deviseth destruction; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

³ (64:4) Who have whet their tongue like a sword, and have aimed their arrow, a poisoned word; ⁴ (64:5) That they may shoot in secret places at the blameless; suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.

¹⁸ There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword; but the tongue of the wise is health.

²⁰ Where no wood is, the fire goeth out; and where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth. ²¹ As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. ²² The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the body.

²⁹ I am become a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches.

⁴ He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

²⁰ Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of flesh; ²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thistles, the face thereof was covered with nettles, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. ³² Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction. ³³ 'Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep' - ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.

²⁴ Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith: 'It is no transgression', the same is the companion of a destroyer.

²⁶ But his lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter,

¹³ And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country, and there he wasted his substance with riotous living. ¹⁴ And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country, and he began to be in want.

¹ And he said also unto the disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward, and the same was accused unto him that he was wasting his goods. ² And he called him, and said unto him, What is this that I hear of thee? render the account of thy stewardship, for thou canst be no longer steward.

¹¹ in diligence not slothful, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord,

¹² that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

¹ And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him: 'I am God Almighty; walk before Me, and be thou wholehearted.

¹¹ (32:12) Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, the mother with the children.

²⁸ (32:29) And he said: 'Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed.' ²⁹ (32:30) And Jacob asked him, and said: 'Tell me, I pray thee, thy name.' And he said: 'Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?' And he blessed him there.

¹³ And Moses said unto God: 'Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them: The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me: What is His name? what shall I say unto them?' ¹⁴ And God said unto Moses: 'I AM THAT I AM'; and He said: 'Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel: I AM hath sent me unto you.' ¹⁵ And God said moreover unto Moses: 'Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel: The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you; this is My name for ever, and this is My memorial unto all generations.

³ and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name Jehovah I made Me not known to them.

⁵ And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. ⁶ And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed: 'The LORD, the LORD, God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth; ⁷ keeping mercy unto the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and unto the fourth generation.'

⁶ And David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.

³ The God who is my rock, in Him I take refuge; my shield, and my horn of salvation, my high tower, and my refuge; my saviour, Thou savest me from violence.

⁴⁵ The sons of the stranger dwindle away before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me. ⁴⁶ The sons of the stranger fade away, and come halting out of their close places. ⁴⁷ The LORD liveth, and blessed be my Rock; and exalted be the God, my Rock of salvation;

⁵¹ A tower of salvation is He to His king; and showeth mercy to His anointed, to David and to his seed, for evermore.

² (18:3) The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in Him I take refuge; my shield, and my horn of salvation, my high tower.

¹ A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

³ (56:4) In the day that I am afraid, I will put my trust in Thee. ⁴ (56:5) In God - I will praise His word - in God do I trust, I will not be afraid; what can flesh do unto me?

³ (61:4) For Thou hast been a refuge for me, a tower of strength in the face of the enemy. ⁴ (61:5) I will dwell in Thy Tent for ever; I will take refuge in the covert of Thy wings. Selah

² I will say of the LORD, who is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust,

¹⁴ 'Because he hath set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he hath known My name.

² My lovingkindness, and my fortress, my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and He in whom I take refuge; who subdueth my people under me.

⁶ (9:5) For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called Pele- joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom;

⁴ Trust ye in the LORD for ever, for the LORD is GOD, an everlasting Rock.

¹⁵ For thus saith the High and Lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

⁶ In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The LORD is our righteousness.

¹⁹ God, the Lord, is my strength, and He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and He maketh me to walk upon my high places. For the Leader. With my string-music.

²³ Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel, which is, being interpreted, God with us.

⁸ I am the Alpha and the Omega, saith the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

³¹ For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.

²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold: 'Thou art my confidence'; ²⁵ If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

⁶ (49:7) Of them that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches? ⁷ (49:8) No man can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him - ⁸ (49:9) For too costly is the redemption of their soul, and must be let alone for ever - ⁹ (49:10) That he should still live alway, that he should not see the pit.

⁵ (52:7) God will likewise break thee for ever, He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah ⁶ (52:8) The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him: ⁷ (52:9) 'Lo, this is the man that made not God his stronghold; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.'

¹⁰ (62:11) Trust not in oppression, and put not vain hope in robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart thereon. ¹¹ (62:12) God hath spoken once, twice have I heard this: that strength belongeth unto God;

¹⁵ The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the ruin of the poor is their poverty.

⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath; but righteousness delivereth from death.

¹² For wisdom is a defence, even as money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserveth the life of him that hath it.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be? ²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

⁶ Wherefore I abhor my words, and repent, seeing I am dust and ashes. ⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: 'My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken of Me the thing that is right, as My servant Job hath. ⁸ Now therefore, take unto you seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt- offering; and My servant Job shall pray for you; for him will I accept, that I do not unto you aught unseemly; for ye have not spoken of Me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.' ⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them; and the LORD accepted Job. ¹⁰ And the LORD changed the fortune of Job, when he prayed for his friends; and the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. ¹¹ Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house; and they bemoaned him, and comforted him concerning all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him; every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one a ring of gold. ¹² So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning; and he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she-asses. ¹³ He had also seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first, Jemimah; and the name of the second, Keziah; and the name of the third, Keren-happuch. ¹⁵ And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. ¹⁶ And after this Job lived a hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations. ¹⁷ So Job died, being old and full of days.

³³ The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour goeth humility.

¹⁸ Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

²³ A man's pride shall bring him low; but he that is of a lowly spirit shall attain to honour.

⁵ Then said I: Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. ⁶ Then flew unto me one of the seraphim, with a glowing stone in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar; ⁷ and he touched my mouth with it, and said: Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin expiated. ⁸ And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said: 'Here am I; send me.' ⁹ And He said: 'Go, and tell this people: hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. ¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they, seeing with their eyes, and hearing with their ears, and understanding with their heart, return, and be healed.' ¹¹ Then said I: 'Lord, how long?' And He answered: 'Until cities be waste without inhabitant, and houses without man, and the land become utterly waste, ¹² And the LORD have removed men far away, and the forsaken places be many in the midst of the land. ¹³ And if there be yet a tenth in it, it shall again be eaten up; as a terebinth, and as an oak, whose stock remaineth, when they cast their leaves, so the holy seed shall be the stock thereof.'

⁴⁹ Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride, fulness of bread, and careless ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. ⁵⁰ And they were haughty, and committed abomination before Me; therefore I removed them when I saw it.

² 'Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyre: Thus saith the Lord GOD: Because thy heart is lifted up, and thou hast said: I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the heart of the seas; yet thou art man, and not God, though thou didst set thy heart as the heart of God -

⁹ Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee: I am God? But thou art man, and not God, in the hand of them that defile thee.

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy consorts and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified; ²⁴ then was the palm of the hand sent from before Him, and this writing was inscribed.

²⁰ And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;

²³ At the beginning of thy supplications a word went forth, and I am come to declare it; for thou art greatly beloved; therefore look into the word, and understand the vision.

¹¹ For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

²¹ And upon a set day Herod arrayed himself in royal apparel, and sat on the throne, and made an oration unto them. ²² And the people shouted, saying, The voice of a god, and not of a man. ²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not glory to God; and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another. Gird yourselves with humility, for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

¹⁴ (13:15) then shalt thou inquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in the midst of thee;

⁴ Then said the king to Ziba: 'Behold, thine is all that pertaineth unto Mephibosheth.' And Ziba said: 'I prostrate myself; let me find favour in thy sight, my lord, O king.'

²⁴ (19:25) And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace. ²⁵ (19:26) And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him: 'Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?' ²⁶ (19:27) And he answered: 'My lord, O king, my servant deceived me; for thy servant said: I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go with the king; because thy servant is lame. ²⁷ (19:28) And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God; do therefore what is good in thine eyes. ²⁸ (19:29) For all my father's house were deserving of death at the hand of my lord the king; yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet? or why should I cry any more unto the king?' ²⁹ (19:30) And the king said unto him: 'Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I say: Thou and Ziba divide the land.' ³⁰ (19:31) And Mephibosheth said unto the king: 'Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come in peace unto his own house.'

¹⁰ And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews' enemy. ¹¹ And the king said unto Haman: 'The silver is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee.' ¹² Then were the king's scribes called in the first month, on the thirteenth day thereof, and there was written, according to all that Haman commanded, unto the king's satraps, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the princes of every people; to every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and it was sealed with the king's ring. ¹³ And letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey. ¹⁴ The copy of the writing, to be given out for a decree in every province, was to be published unto all peoples, that they should be ready against that day. ¹⁵ The posts went forth in haste by the king's commandment, and the decree was given out in Shushan the castle; and the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.

⁵ And she said: 'If it please the king, and if I have found favour in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews that are in all the king's provinces; ⁶ for how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?' ⁷ Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew: 'Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews. ⁸ Write ye also concerning the Jews, as it liketh you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring; for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse.' ⁹ Then were the king's scribes called at that time, in the third month, which is the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews, even to the satraps, and the governors and princes of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, a hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language. ¹⁰ And they wrote in the name of king Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by posts on horseback, riding on swift steeds that were used in the king's service, bred of the stud; ¹¹ that the king had granted the Jews that were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, and to slay, and to cause to perish, all the forces of the people and province that would assault them, their little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey, ¹² upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar. ¹³ The copy of the writing, to be given out for a decree in every province, was to be published unto all the peoples, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies. ¹⁴ So the posts that rode upon swift steeds that were used in the king's service went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment; and the decree was given out in Shushan the castle. ¹⁵ And Mordecai went forth from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a rob of fine linen and purple; and the city of Shushan shouted and was glad. ¹⁶ The Jews had light and gladness, and joy and honour. ¹⁷ And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness and joy, a feast and a good day. And many from among the peoples of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews was fallen upon them.

¹⁶ I was a father to the needy; and the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.

²⁵ It is a snare to a man rashly to say: 'Holy', and after vows to make inquiry.

⁹ (6:10) Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the interdict.

¹⁴ (6:15) Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

⁵¹ Doth our law judge a man, except it first hear from himself and know what he doeth?

²⁰ Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped; ²¹ And he said; naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither; the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot even unto his crown. ⁸ And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself therewith; and he sat among the ashes. ⁹ Then said his wife unto him: 'Dost thou still hold fast thine integrity? blaspheme God, and die.' ¹⁰ But he said unto her: 'Thou speakest as one of the impious women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?' For all this did not Job sin with his lips.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof my spirit drinketh up; the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹⁴ Then Thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions; ¹⁵ So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than these my bones.

¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet shall I not lift up my head - being filled with ignominy and looking upon mine affliction. ¹⁶ And if it exalt itself, Thou huntest me as a lion; and again Thou showest Thyself marvellous upon me. ¹⁷ Thou renewest Thy witnesses against me, and increasest Thine indignation upon me; host succeeding host against me.

⁹ (30:10) 'What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise Thee? shall it declare Thy truth? ¹⁰ (30:11) Hear, O LORD, and be gracious unto me; LORD, be Thou my helper.'

³ When I kept silence, my bones wore away through my groaning all the day long. ⁴ For day and night Thy hand was heavy upon me; my sap was turned as in the droughts of summer. Selah

² (38:3) For Thine arrows are gone deep into me, and Thy hand is come down upon me. ³ (38:4) There is no soundness in my flesh because of Thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ (38:5) For mine iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

¹⁰ (42:11) As with a crushing in my bones, mine adversaries taunt me; while they say unto me all the day: 'Where is Thy God?' ¹¹ (42:12) Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why moanest thou within me? Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the salvation of my countenance, and my God.

³ (55:4) Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked; for they cast mischief upon me, and in anger they persecute me.

⁵ (55:6) Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.

² (77:3) In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; with my hand uplifted, mine eye streameth in the night without ceasing; my soul refuseth to be comforted. ³ (77:4) When I think thereon, O God, I must moan; when I muse thereon, my spirit fainteth. Selah

¹⁴ (88:15) LORD, why castest Thou off my soul? Why hidest Thou Thy face from me? ¹⁵ (88:16) I am afflicted and at the point of death from my youth up; I have borne Thy terrors, I am distracted. ¹⁶ (88:17) Thy fierce wrath is gone over me; Thy terrors have cut me off.

²² For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

³ Who healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

¹³ A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance; but by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.

²² A merry heart is a good medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

³³ And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly amazed, and sore troubled. ³⁴ And he saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death; abide ye here, and watch.

³ And not only so, but we also rejoice in our tribulations; knowing that tribulation worketh stedfastness, ⁴ and stedfastness, approvedness, and approvedness, hope: ⁵ and hope putteth not to shame, because the love of God hath been shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit which was given unto us.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long, We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter. ³⁷ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

¹² For our glorying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

⁷ so that contrariwise ye should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his overmuch sorrow.

⁹ And he hath said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my power is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ¹⁰ Wherefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then am I strong.

² Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold temptations,

⁶ Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, ye have been put to grief in manifold trials,

⁹ Give Thy servant therefore an understanding heart to judge Thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this Thy great people?'

⁹⁷ MEM. O how love I Thy law! It is my meditation all the day. ⁹⁸ Thy commandments make me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers; for Thy testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than mine elders, because I have keep Thy precepts. ¹⁰¹ I have refrained my feet from every evil way, in order that I might observe Thy word. ¹⁰² I have not turned aside from Thine ordinances; for Thou hast instructed me. ¹⁰³ How sweet are Thy words unto my palate! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! ¹⁰⁴ From Thy precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.

⁵ That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning, and the man of understanding may attain unto wise counsels;

⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding; forget not, neither decline from the words of my mouth;

⁷ The beginning of wisdom is: Get wisdom; yea, with all thy getting get understanding.

⁹ Give to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁴ The heart of him that hath discernment seeketh knowledge; but the mouth of fools feedeth on folly.

²³ Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

⁸ And other fell into the good ground, and grew, and brought forth fruit a hundredfold. As he said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. ⁹ And his disciples asked him what this parable might be. ¹⁰ And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

³⁹ And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

¹⁵ And that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ Every scripture, inspired of God, is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. ¹⁷ That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.

⁵ But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.

²⁰ (32:21) and ye shall say: Moreover, behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us.' For he said: 'I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.'

¹⁰ And Jacob said: 'Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found favour in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand; forasmuch as I have seen thy face, as one seeth the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

¹¹ And their father Israel said unto them: 'If it be so now, do this: take of the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spicery and ladanum, nuts, and almonds;

²⁷ And now this present which thy servant hath brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the young men that follow my lord.

⁸ A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; whithersoever he turneth, he prospereth.

⁶ Many will entreat the favour of the liberal man; and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

¹⁴ A gift in secret pacifieth anger, and a present in the bosom strong wrath.

¹ And when David was a little past the top, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. ² And the king said unto Ziba: 'What meanest thou by these?' And Ziba said: 'The asses are for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink.' ³ And the king said: 'And where is thy master's son?' And Ziba said unto the king: 'Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem; for he said: To-day will the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.'

¹³ He that giveth answer before he heareth, it is folly and confusion unto him.

⁵ For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: ⁶ who moreover assayed to profane the temple; on whom also we laid hold;

¹² and neither in the temple did they find me disputing with any man or stirring up a crowd, nor in the synagogues, nor in the city. ¹³ Neither can they prove against me the things whereof they now accuse me.

² by the lot of their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half-tribe. -

²¹ And he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by their families, and the family of the Matrites was taken; and Saul the son of Kish was taken; but when they sought him, he could not be found. ²² Therefore they asked of the LORD further: 'Is there yet a man come hither?' And the LORD answered: 'Behold, he hath hid himself among the baggage.' ²³ And they ran and fetched him thence; and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward. ²⁴ And Samuel said to all the people: 'See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people?' And all the people shouted, and said: 'Long live the king.' ²⁵ Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. ²⁶ And Saul also went to his house to Gibeah; and there went with him the men of valour, whose hearts God had touched. ²⁷ But certain base fellows said: 'How shall this man save us?' And they despised him, and brought him no present. But he was as one that held his peace.

⁴² And Saul said: 'Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.' And Jonathan was taken.

⁶³ (6:48) Unto the sons of Merari were given by lot, according to their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

³¹ These likewise cast lots even as their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the heads of the fathers' houses of the priests and of the Levites; the fathers' houses of the chief even as those of his younger brother.

¹ And the princes of the people dwelt in Jerusalem; the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in the other cities.

³³ The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.

⁵ but unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. ⁶ And the LORD said unto Cain: 'Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? ⁷ If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door; and unto thee is its desire, but thou mayest rule over it.' ⁸ And Cain spoke unto Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

⁴¹ And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him. And Esau said in his heart: 'Let the days of mourning for my father be at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.' ⁴² And the words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah; and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him: 'Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee. ⁴³ Now therefore, my son, hearken to my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran; ⁴⁴ and tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury turn away; ⁴⁵ until thy brother's anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him; then I will send, and fetch thee from thence; why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?'

⁶ (32:7) And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying: 'We came to thy brother Esau, and moreover he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.' ⁷ (32:8) Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. And he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two camps. ⁸ (32:9) And he said: 'If Esau come to the one camp, and smite it, then the camp which is left shall escape.' ⁹ (32:10) And Jacob said: 'O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who saidst unto me: Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good; ¹⁰ (32:11) I am not worthy of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which Thou hast shown unto Thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two camps. ¹¹ (32:12) Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, the mother with the children.

³ Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colours. ⁴ And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. ⁵ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren; and they hated him yet the more.

¹¹ And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying in mind.

¹⁸ And they saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. ¹⁹ And they said one to another: 'Behold, this dreamer cometh. ²⁰ Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say: An evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.' ²¹ And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand; and said: 'Let us not take his life.' ²² And Reuben said unto them: 'Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him' - that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father. ²³ And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colours that was on him; ²⁴ and they took him, and cast him into the pit - and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. ²⁵ And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites came from Gilead, with their camels bearing spicery and balm and ladanum, going to carry it down to Egypt. ²⁶ And Judah said unto his brethren: 'What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? ²⁷ Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh.' And his brethren hearkened unto him.

²² And Absalom spoke unto Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

²⁸ And Absalom commanded his servants, saying: 'Mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you: Smite Amnon, then kill him, fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.'

²³ Then king Solomon swore by the LORD, saying: 'God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life. ²⁴ Now therefore as the LORD liveth, who hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me a house, as He promised, surely Adonijah shall be put to death this day.' ²⁵ And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him, so that he died.

¹⁶ And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying: 'What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse; to your tents, O Israel; now see to thine own house, David.' So Israel departed unto their tents.

¹⁷ And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

¹⁹ A false witness that breatheth out lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

³² He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

³⁹ And there arose a sharp contention, so that they parted asunder one from the other, and Barnabas took Mark with him, and sailed away unto Cyprus,

¹³ In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man; but the righteous cometh out of trouble. ¹⁴ A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, and the doings of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.

² A man shall eat good from the fruit of his mouth; but the desire of the faithless is violence.

¹⁸ For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; let them be established altogether upon thy lips.

²¹ That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou mightest bring back words of truth to them that send thee?

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. ¹² As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; but he that refraineth his lips is wise. ²⁰ The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many; but the foolish die for want of understanding.

³¹ The mouth of the righteous buddeth with wisdom; but the froward tongue shall be cut off.

³⁰ The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that is wise winneth souls.

² A man shall eat good from the fruit of his mouth; but the desire of the faithless is violence. ³ He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life; but for him that openeth wide his lips there shall be ruin.

⁴ The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters; a flowing brook, a fountain of wisdom. ⁵ It is not good to respect the person of the wicked, so as to turn aside the righteous in judgment. ⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

¹⁹ Peace, peace, to him that is far off and to him that is near, saith the LORD that createth the fruit of the lips; and I will heal him.

³⁵ The good man out of his good treasure bringeth forth good things; and the evil man out of his evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. ³⁶ And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

¹⁴ How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? ¹⁵ and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

¹⁶ to the one a savor from death unto death, to the other a savor from life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

¹⁵ It is no great thing therefore if his ministers also fashion themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works.

²⁹ Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear.

¹⁰ For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision, ¹¹ whose mouths must be stopped, men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity. Thus is the tongue set among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, it is full of deadly poison. ⁹ Therewith bless we the God and Father, and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God:

¹⁸ For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who have indeed escaped from them that live in error,

¹⁸ And the LORD God said: 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.'

⁶⁷ And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted for his mother.

²⁰ And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. ²¹ And Jacob said unto Laban: 'Give me my wife, for my days are filled, that I may go in unto her.'

²⁸ And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week; and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife.

⁴ So shalt thou find grace and good favour in the sight of God and man.

¹⁵ Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. ¹⁶ Let thy springs be dispersed abroad, and courses of water in the streets. ¹⁷ Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee. ¹⁸ Let thy fountain be blessed; and have joy of the wife of thy youth. ¹⁹ A lovely hind and a graceful doe, let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; with her love be thou ravished always. ²⁰ Why then wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of an alien? ²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and He maketh even all his paths. ²² His own iniquities shall ensnare the wicked, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin. ²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall reel.

³⁵ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.

⁴ A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband; but she that doeth shamefully is as rottenness in his bones.

¹⁴ House and riches are the inheritance of fathers; but a prudent wife is from the LORD.

¹⁰ A woman of valour who can find? for her price is far above rubies. ¹¹ The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, and he hath no lack of gain. ¹² She doeth him good and not evil all the days of her life. ¹³ She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. ¹⁴ She is like the merchant-ships; she bringeth her food from afar. ¹⁵ She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth food to her household, and a portion to her maidens. ¹⁶ She considereth a field, and buyeth it; with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. ¹⁷ She girdeth her loins with strength, and maketh strong her arms. ¹⁸ She perceiveth that her merchandise is good; her lamp goeth not out by night. ¹⁹ She layeth her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. ²⁰ She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. ²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household; for all her household are clothed with scarlet. ²² She maketh for herself coverlets; her clothing is fine linen and purple. ²³ Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. ²⁴ She maketh linen garments and selleth them; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. ²⁵ Strength and dignity are her clothing; and she laugheth at the time to come. ²⁶ She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and the law of kindness is on her tongue. ²⁷ She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. ²⁸ Her children rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her: ²⁹ 'Many daughters have done valiantly, but thou excellest them all.' ³⁰ Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. ³¹ Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her works praise her in the gates.

⁹ Enjoy life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which He hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity; for that is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherein thou labourest under the sun.

¹² (12:13) And Jacob fled into the field of Aram, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.

² But, because of fornications, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.

⁷ And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spoke roughly with them; and he said unto them: 'Whence come ye?' And they said: 'From the land of Canaan to buy food.'

³⁰ 'The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country.

² And Pharaoh said: 'Who is the LORD, that I should hearken unto His voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, and moreover I will not let Israel go.'

⁷ and she said: Let me glean, I pray you, and gather after the reapers among the sheaves; so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, save that she tarried a little in the house.'

³⁶ And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thy house shall come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and shall say: Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread.'

¹⁰ And Nabal answered David's servants, and said: 'Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there are many servants now-a- days that break away every man from his master;

¹⁷ Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his house; for he is such a base fellow, that one cannot speak to him.'

¹ Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying: 'Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD; and the creditor is come to take unto him my two children to be bondmen.' ² And Elisha said unto her: 'What shall I do for thee? tell me; what hast thou in the house?' And she said: 'Thy handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.'

² For all these things hath My hand made, and so all these things came to be, saith the LORD; but on this man will I look, even on him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My word.

³ Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

⁹ But let the brother of low degree glory in his high estate: ¹⁰ and the rich, in that he is made low; because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. ¹¹ For the sun ariseth with the scorching wind, and withereth the grass; and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth; so also shall the rich man fade away in his goings.

³ and ye have regard to him that weareth the fine clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place, and ye say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool,

⁶ But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats?

⁴ And Jonathan spoke good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him: 'Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his work hath been very good towards thee; ⁵ for he put his life in his hand, and smote the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great victory for all Israel; thou sawest it, and didst rejoice; wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?'

²⁶ And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying: 'Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of the LORD'; ²⁷ to them that were in Beth-el, and to them that were in Ramoth of the South, and to them that were in Jattir; ²⁸ and to them that were in Aroer, and to them that were in Siphmoth, and to them that were in Eshtemoa; ²⁹ and to them that were in Racal, and to them that were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to them that were in the cities of the Kenites; ³⁰ and to them that were in Hormah, and to them that were in Bor-ashan, and to them that were in Athach; ³¹ and to them that were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were wont to haunt.

²⁶ I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant hast thou been unto me; wonderful was thy love to me, passing the love of women.

¹ And David said: 'Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?' ² Now there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba, and they called him unto David; and the king said unto him: 'Art thou Ziba?' And he said: 'Thy servant is he.' ³ And the king said: 'Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God unto him?' And Ziba said unto the king: 'Jonathan hath yet a son, who is lame on his feet.' ⁴ And the king said unto him: 'Where is he?' And Ziba said unto the king: 'Behold, he is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.' ⁵ Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar. ⁶ And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came unto David, and fell on his face, and prostrated himself. And David said: 'Mephibosheth!' And he answered: 'Behold thy servant!' ⁷ And David said unto him: 'Fear not; for I will surely show thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.' ⁸ And he bowed down, and said: 'What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?' ⁹ Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said unto him: 'All that pertained to Saul and to all his house have I given unto thy master's son. ¹⁰ And thou shalt till the land for him, thou, and thy sons, and thy servants; and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master's son may have bread to eat; but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread continually at my table.' Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. ¹¹ Then said Ziba unto the king: 'According to all that my lord the king commandeth his servant, so shall thy servant do; but Mephibosheth eateth at my table as one of the king's sons.' ¹² Now Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth. ¹³ But Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem; for he did eat continually at the king's table; and he was lame on both his feet.

¹⁷ And Absalom said to Hushai: 'Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?'

²⁷ And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, ²⁸ brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse, ²⁹ and honey, and curd, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat; for they said: 'The people is hungry, and faint, and thirsty, in the wilderness.'

³⁰ (19:31) And Mephibosheth said unto the king: 'Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come in peace unto his own house.' ³¹ (19:32) And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he passed on to Jordan with the king, to bring him on the way over the Jordan. ³² (19:33) Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old; and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man. ³³ (19:34) And the king said unto Barzillai: 'Come thou over with me, and I will sustain thee with me in Jerusalem.' ³⁴ (19:35) And Barzillai said unto the king: 'How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem? ³⁵ (19:36) I am this day fourscore years old; can I discern between good and bad? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king? ³⁶ (19:37) Thy servant would but just go over the Jordan with the king; and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward? ³⁷ (19:38) Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back, that I may die in mine own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.' ³⁸ (19:39) And the king answered: 'Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee; and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.' ³⁹ (19:40) And all the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over; and the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

⁷ But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD'S oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

³⁸ (12:39) All these, being men of war, that could order the battle array, came with a whole heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king. ³⁹ (12:40) And they were there with David three days, eating and drinking; for their brethren had made preparation for them. ⁴⁰ (12:41) Moreover they that were nigh unto them, even as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, victual of meal, cakes of figs, and clusters of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep in abundance; for there was joy in Israel.

¹⁷ A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

⁹ Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart; so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

⁴⁹ And straightway he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Rabbi, and kissed him. ⁵⁰ And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

¹³ Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. ¹⁴ Ye are my friends, if ye do the things which I command you. ¹⁵ No longer do I call you servants, for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from my Father, I have made known unto you.
