¹ When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well him that is before thee; ² And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. ³ Be not desirous of his dainties; seeing they are deceitful food. ⁴ Weary not thyself to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom. ⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon it? it is gone; for riches certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flieth toward heaven. ⁶ Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties; ⁷ For as one that hath reckoned within himself, so is he: 'Eat and drink', saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. ⁸ The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words. ⁹ Speak not in the ears of a fool; for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. ¹⁰ Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless; ¹¹ For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause with thee. ¹² Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge. ¹³ Withhold not correction from the child; for though thou beat him with the rod, he will not die. ¹⁴ Thou beatest him with the rod, and wilt deliver his soul from the nether-world. ¹⁵ My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart will be glad, even mine; ¹⁶ Yea, my reins will rejoice, when thy lips speak right things. ¹⁷ Let not thy heart envy sinners, but be in the fear of the LORD all the day; ¹⁸ For surely there is a future; and thy hope shall not be cut off. ¹⁹ Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way. ²⁰ Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of flesh; ²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. ²² Hearken unto thy father that begot thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. ²³ Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. ²⁴ The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; and he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him. ²⁵ Let thy father and thy mother be glad, and let her that bore thee rejoice. ²⁶ My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways. ²⁷ For a harlot is a deep ditch; and an alien woman is a narrow pit. ²⁸ She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the faithless among men. ²⁹ Who crieth: 'Woe'? who: 'Alas'? who hath contentions? who hath raving? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine. ³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it glideth down smoothly; ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like a basilisk. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter confused things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ 'They have struck me, and I felt it not, they have beaten me, and I knew it not; when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.'

³² And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, that did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. ³³ And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men marvelled one with another. ³⁴ And portions were taken unto them from before him; but Benjamin's portion was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

¹² These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast together, shepherds that without fear feed themselves, clouds without water, carried along by winds, autumn leaves without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots,

⁸ And if thy hand or thy foot causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee; it is good for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire. ⁹ And if thine eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; it is good for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire.

²⁷ but I buffet my body, and bring it into bondage; lest by any means, after that I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected.

¹⁹ whose end is perdition, whose god is the belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.

⁴ Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to be occupied in deeds of wickedness with men that work iniquity; and let me not eat of their dainties.

⁶ Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties;

⁸ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's food, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the officers that he might not defile himself.

³⁴ But take heed to yourselves, lest haply your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day come on you suddenly as a snare;

²² that ye put away, as concerning your former manner of life, the old man, that waxeth corrupt after the lusts of deceit,

⁵ Trust in the LORD with all thy heart, and lean not upon thine own understanding.

⁷ Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the LORD, and depart from evil;

²⁷ He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.

¹² Seest thou a man wise in his own eyes? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

²⁰ A faithful man shall abound with blessings; but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be unpunished.

²¹ Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal;

²⁷ Work not for the food which perisheth, but for the food which abideth unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you; for him the Father, even God, hath sealed.

²⁵ For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant of this mystery, lest ye be wise in your own conceits, that a hardening in part hath befallen Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in,

¹⁶ Be of the same mind one toward another. Set not your mind on high things, but condescend to things that are lowly. Be not wise in your own conceits.

⁸ but having food and covering we shall be therewith content. ⁹ But they that are minded to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil; which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

⁵ Be ye free from the love of money, content with such things as ye have; for himself hath said, I will in no wise fail thee, neither will I in any wise forsake thee.

³⁶ And Jacob their father said unto them: 'Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away; upon me are all these things come.'

¹⁴ that there came a messenger unto Job, and said: 'The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them; ¹⁵ and the Sabeans made a raid, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.' ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'A fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.' ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'The Chaldeans set themselves in three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

⁶ (39:7) Surely man walketh as a mere semblance; surely for vanity they are in turmoil; he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

³⁶ Incline my heart unto Thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. ³⁷ Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity, and quicken me in Thy ways.

²⁴ For riches are not for ever; and doth the crown endure unto all generations?

² Vanity of vanities, saith Koheleth; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

¹³ (5:12) There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept by the owner thereof to his hurt; ¹⁴ (5:13) and those riches perish by evil adventure; and if he hath begotten a son, there is nothing in his hand.

⁸ Vanity of vanities, saith Koheleth; all is vanity.

² Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your gain for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto Me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

¹⁷ But thine eyes and thy heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for shedding innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

²⁹ But this I say, brethren, the time is shortened, that henceforth both those that have wives may be as though they had none, ³⁰ and those that weep, as though they wept not, and those that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not, and those that buy, as though they possessed not, ³¹ and those that use the world, as not using it to the full; for the fashion of this world passeth away.

¹⁷ Charge them that are rich in this present world, that they be not highminded, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy,

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vain glory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

⁹ Beware that there be not a base thought in thy heart, saying: 'The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand'; and thine eye be evil against thy needy brother, and thou give him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin in thee.

⁵⁶ The tender and delicate woman among you, who would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil against the husband of her bosom, and against her son, and against her daughter;

⁹ He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

³ Be not desirous of his dainties; seeing they are deceitful food.

²² He that hath an evil eye hasteneth after riches, and knoweth not that want shall come upon him.

⁸ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's food, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the officers that he might not defile himself. ⁹ And God granted Daniel mercy and compassion in the sight of the chief of the officers. ¹⁰ And the chief of the officers said unto Daniel: 'I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces sad in comparison with the youths that are of your own age? so would ye endanger my head with the king.'

¹⁵ Or is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

²² thefts, covetings, wickednesses, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, railing, pride, foolishness;

¹⁵ And she said unto him: 'How canst thou say: I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.'

²⁶ Then said Absalom: 'If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us.' And the king said unto him: 'Why should he go with thee?' ²⁷ But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him. ²⁸ And Absalom commanded his servants, saying: 'Mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you: Smite Amnon, then kill him, fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.'

² (12:3) They speak falsehood every one with his neighbour; with flattering lip, and with a double heart, do they speak.

²¹ (55:22) Smoother than cream were the speeches of his mouth, but his heart was war; his words were softer than oil, yet were they keen-edged swords.

²² The lust of a man is his shame; and a poor man is better than a liar.

²⁷ And as for both these kings, their hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper, for the end remaineth yet for the time appointed.

³⁷ Now as he spake, a certain Pharisee asketh him to dine with him; and he went in, and sat down to meat. ³⁸ And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first bathed himself before dinner. ³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now ye the Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Ye foolish ones, did not he that made the outside make the inside also? ⁴¹ But give for alms those things which are within, and behold, all things are clean unto you. ⁴² But woe unto you Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass over justice and the love of God; but these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ⁴³ Woe unto you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces. ⁴⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as the tombs which appear not, and the men that walk over them know it not. ⁴⁵ And one of the lawyers answering saith unto him, Teacher, in saying this thou reproachest us also. ⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you lawyers also! for ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe unto you! for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ So ye bear witness and consent unto the works of your fathers; for they killed them, and ye build their tombs. ⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send unto them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall kill and persecute, ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary; yea, I say unto you, it shall be required of this generation. ⁵² Woe unto you lawyers! for ye took away the key of knowledge; ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. ⁵³ And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press upon him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and discipline.

⁷ He that correcteth a scorner getteth to himself shame, and he that reproveth a wicked man, it becometh unto him a blot. ⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee; reprove a wise man, and he will love thee.

⁴ Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. ⁵ Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

²¹ But they held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king's commandment was, saying: 'Answer him not.'

⁶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast your pearls before the swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and rend you.

¹⁴ And the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they scoffed at him.

⁵² The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.

³⁰ The man answered and said unto them, Why, herein is the marvel, that ye know not whence he is, and yet he opened mine eyes. ³¹ We know that God heareth not sinners; but if any man be a worshipper of God, and do his will, him he heareth. ³² Since the world began it was never heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind. ³³ If this man were not from God, he could do nothing. ³⁴ They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

⁴⁰ Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said unto him, Are we also blind?

²⁰ And many of them said, He hath a demon, and is mad, why hear ye him?

⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed. ⁴⁶ And Paul and Barnabas spake out boldly, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to you. Seeing ye thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

¹⁸ And certain also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, What would this babbler say? others, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods; because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

³² Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, but others said, We will hear thee concerning this yet again.

²⁵ And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, ²⁶ saying, Go thou unto this people, and say, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand, And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive: ²⁷ For this people's heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest, haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them. ²⁸ Be it known therefore unto you, that this salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles; they will also hear.

²¹ For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom knew not God, it was God's good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save them that believe. ²² Seeing that Jews ask for signs, and Greeks seek after wisdom: ²³ but we preach Christ crucified, unto Jews a stumblingblock, and unto Greeks foolishness, ²⁴ but unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

¹⁰ We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ, we are weak, but ye are strong, ye have glory, but we have dishonor. ¹¹ Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling-place, ¹² and we toil, working with our own hands; being reviled, we bless, being persecuted, we endure, ¹³ being defamed, we entreat; we are made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things, even until now.

¹⁴ Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set, in thine inheritance which thou shalt inherit, in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

¹⁷ Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour's landmark. And all the people shall say: Amen.

²⁷ Yea, ye would cast lots upon the fatherless, and dig a pit for your friend.

⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

² There are that remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed them. ³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge.

⁹ There are that pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor;

²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate; ²² Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. ²³ For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of His majesty I could do nothing.

⁶ They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.

²⁸ Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

⁵ Nay, but if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbour;

³ Thus saith the LORD: Execute ye justice and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor; and do no wrong, do no violence, to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

¹⁰ and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.

⁵ And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers; and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not Me, saith the LORD of hosts.

²⁷ Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

²² (22:21) Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. ²³ (22:22) If thou afflict them in any wise - for if they cry at all unto Me, I will surely hear their cry - ²⁴ (22:23) My wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

¹⁹ Cursed be he that perverteth the justice due to the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say: Amen.

²⁵ But as for me, I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He will witness at the last upon the dust;

⁵ (12:6) 'For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise', saith the LORD; 'I will set him in safety at whom they puff.'

²³ For the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil of life those that despoil them.

³³ Thus saith the LORD of hosts: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together; and all that took them captives hold them fast; they refuse to let them go. ³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong, the LORD of hosts is His name; He will thoroughly plead their cause, that He may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

³⁶ Therefore thus saith the LORD: Behold, I will plead thy cause, and take vengeance for thee; and I will dry up her sea, and make her fountain dry.

² So that thou make thine ear attend unto wisdom, and thy heart incline to discernment; ³ Yea, if thou call for understanding, and lift up thy voice for discernment; ⁴ If thou seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom, out of His mouth cometh knowledge and discernment;

¹ My son, attend unto my wisdom; incline thine ear to my understanding; ² That thou mayest preserve discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

¹⁷ Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart unto my knowledge.

¹⁹ Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.

³¹ and come unto thee as the people cometh, and sit before thee as My people, and hear thy words, but do them not - for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness;

⁵² And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

²¹ Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. ²² But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves. ²³ For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a mirror: ²⁴ for he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. ²⁵ But he that looketh into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and so continueth, he being not a hearer that forgetteth but a doer that worketh, this man shall be blessed in his doing.

²⁴ He that spareth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

¹⁸ Chasten thy son, for there is hope; but set not thy heart on his destruction.

¹⁵ The rod and reproof give wisdom; but a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother.

¹⁷ Correct thy son, and he will give thee rest; yea, he will give delight unto thy soul.

¹⁵ Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

⁵ to deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

³² But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and lay up my commandments with thee;

¹ Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

¹ The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.

²⁰ A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

²⁴ The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; and he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him. ²⁵ Let thy father and thy mother be glad, and let her that bore thee rejoice.

³ Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father; but he that keepeth company with harlots wasteth his substance.

⁴¹ Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land in truth with My whole heart and with My whole soul.

¹⁷ The LORD thy God is in the midst of thee, a Mighty One who will save; He will rejoice over thee with joy, He will be silent in His love, He will joy over thee with singing.'

² And behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed; and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven thee.

²³ and bring the fatted calf, and kill it, and let us eat, and make merry; ²⁴ for this my son was dead, and is alive again, he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

³² But it was meet to make merry and be glad; for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again, and was lost, and is found.

¹¹ These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy shall abide in you, and that your joy may be made full.

⁵ Jesus therefore saith unto them, Children, have ye aught to eat? They answered him, No.

¹⁹ For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of glorying? Are not even ye, before our Lord Jesus at his coming? ²⁰ For ye are our glory and our joy.

⁸ for now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord. ⁹ For what thanksgiving can we render again unto God for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God,

¹ My little children, these things write I unto you that ye may not sin. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

⁴ I rejoice greatly that I have found certain of thy children walking in truth, even as we received commandment from the Father.

³ For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth. ⁴ Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in truth.

⁶ Hear, for I will speak excellent things, and the opening of my lips shall be right things.

²⁹ Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear.

⁴ nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, or jesting, which are not befitting; but rather giving of thanks.

⁴ that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

² For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

¹ A Psalm of David. Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, neither be thou envious against them that work unrighteousness. ² For they shall soon wither like the grass, and fade as the green herb. ³ Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land, and cherish faithfulness.

³ For I was envious at the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no pangs at their death, and their body is sound. ⁵ In the trouble of man they are not; neither are they plagued like men. ⁶ Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; violence covereth them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand forth from fatness; they are gone beyond the imaginations of their heart.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all they that do thereafter; His praise endureth for ever.

³¹ Envy thou not the man of violence, and choose none of his ways.

¹⁶ Better is little with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure and turmoil therewith.

¹ Be not thou envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that feareth alway; but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into evil.

⁷ (5:6) For through the multitude of dreams and vanities there are also many words; but fear thou God.

¹³ The end of the matter, all having been heard: fear God, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole man. ¹⁴ For God shall bring every work into the judgment concerning every hidden thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.

³¹ So the churches throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, being edified, and, walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, was multiplied.

¹ Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

¹⁷ And if ye call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to each man's work, pass the time of your sojourning in fear:

¹⁸ (9:19) For the needy shall not alway be forgotten, nor the expectation of the poor perish for ever.

³⁷ Mark the man of integrity, and behold the upright; for there is a future for the man of peace.

¹⁴ So know thou wisdom to be unto thy soul; if thou hast found it, then shall there be a future, and thy hope shall not be cut off.

²⁰ For there will be no future to the evil man, the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

¹¹ For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

²¹ What fruit then had ye at that time in the things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. ²² But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end eternal life.

²⁰ according to my earnest expectation and hope, that in nothing shall I be put to shame, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.

³⁵ Cast not away therefore your boldness, which hath great recompense of reward.

¹⁰ Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. ¹¹ I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in paths of uprightness. ¹² When thou goest, thy step shall not be straitened; and if thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. ¹³ Take fast hold of instruction, let her not go; keep her, for she is thy life. ¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and walk not in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it; turn from it, and pass on. ¹⁶ For they sleep not, except they have done evil; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall. ¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. ¹⁸ But the path of the righteous is as the light of dawn, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. ¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness; they know not at what they stumble. ²⁰ My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. ²¹ Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thy heart. ²² For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. ²³ Above all that thou guardest keep thy heart; for out of it are the issues of life.

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise;

⁶ Forsake all thoughtlessness, and live; and walk in the way of understanding.

¹² Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

²⁶ My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

¹ Wine is a mocker, strong drink is riotous; and whosoever reeleth thereby is not wise.

²⁹ Who crieth: 'Woe'? who: 'Alas'? who hath contentions? who hath raving? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine. ³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it glideth down smoothly; ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like a basilisk. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter confused things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ 'They have struck me, and I felt it not, they have beaten me, and I knew it not; when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.'

⁷ A wise son observeth the teaching; but he that is a companion of gluttonous men shameth his father.

⁶ Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto the bitter in soul; ⁷ Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

¹¹ Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that tarry late into the night, till wine inflame them!

²² Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink;

¹³ And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine - 'Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die!'

⁴⁹ and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken,

¹³ And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country, and there he wasted his substance with riotous living.

¹⁹ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day;

¹³ Let us walk becomingly, as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy.

¹⁸ And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit,

³ For the time of life past sufficeth us to work the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries: ⁴ wherein they think strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

²⁰ and they shall say unto the elders of his city: 'This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he doth not hearken to our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.'

⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ¹⁰ 'Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep' - ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and the idle soul shall suffer hunger.

¹⁷ He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man; he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thistles, the face thereof was covered with nettles, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. ³² Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction. ³³ 'Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep' - ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.

¹ Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are smitten down with wine! ² Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, as a storm of hail, a tempest of destruction, as a storm of mighty waters overflowing, that casteth down to the earth with violence. ³ The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under foot;

⁵ Awake, ye drunkards, and weep, and wail, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine, for it is cut off from your mouth.

¹¹ but as it is, I wrote unto you not to keep company, if any man that is named a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner, with such a one no, not to eat.

¹⁰ nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like, of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

³ Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and ye shall keep My sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

¹⁸ If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, that will not hearken to the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and though they chasten him, will not hearken unto them; ¹⁹ then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; ²⁰ and they shall say unto the elders of his city: 'This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he doth not hearken to our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.' ²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

¹⁶ Cursed be he that dishonoureth his father or his mother. And all the people shall say: Amen.

⁸ Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;

²⁰ My son, keep the commandment of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;

¹¹ There is a generation that curse their father, and do not bless their mother.

¹⁷ The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young vultures shall eat it.

⁴ For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother; and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death. ⁵ But ye say, whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is given to God, he shall not honor his father or his mother. ⁶ And ye have made void the commandment of God because of your tradition.

¹⁰ For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother, and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death;

²⁶ When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! ²⁷ Then saith he to the disciple, Behold, thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her unto his own home.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right. ² Honor thy father and mother (which is the first commandment with promise),

¹² But wisdom, where shall it be found? And where is the place of understanding? ¹³ Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. ¹⁴ The deep saith: 'It is not in me'; and the sea saith: 'It is not with me.' ¹⁵ It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. ¹⁶ It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. ¹⁷ Gold and glass cannot equal it; neither shall the exchange thereof be vessels of fine gold. ¹⁸ No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; yea, the price of wisdom is above rubies. ¹⁹ The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

⁷² The law of Thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

¹²⁷ Therefore I love Thy commandments above gold, yea, above fine gold.

² So that thou make thine ear attend unto wisdom, and thy heart incline to discernment; ³ Yea, if thou call for understanding, and lift up thy voice for discernment; ⁴ If thou seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures;

⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding; forget not, neither decline from the words of my mouth; ⁶ Forsake her not, and she will preserve thee; love her, and she will keep thee. ⁷ The beginning of wisdom is: Get wisdom; yea, with all thy getting get understanding.

¹⁶ How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! yea, to get understanding is rather to be chosen than silver.

¹⁶ Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he hath no understanding?

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

¹ Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye for water, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid, and in his joy he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

⁴⁶ who, having found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

²⁶ For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?

²³ save that the Holy Spirit testifieth unto me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.

⁷ Howbeit what things were gain to me, these have I counted loss for Christ. ⁸ Yea indeed, therefore I count all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord; for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but refuse, that I may gain Christ,

²⁶ accounting the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked unto the recompense of reward.

¹⁸ I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined by fire, that thou mayest become rich, and white garments, that thou mayest clothe thyself, and that the shame of thy nakedness be not made manifest, that thou mayest smear thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

¹¹ And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony, and they loved not their life even unto death.

⁴⁸ And also thus said the king: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.'

¹ Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying: ² 'I go the way of all the earth; be thou strong therefore, and show thyself a man; ³ and keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, and His commandments, and His ordinances, and His testimonies, according to that which is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself;

⁹ Now therefore hold him not guiltless, for thou art a wise man; and thou wilt know what thou oughtest to do unto him, and thou shalt bring his hoar head down to the grave with blood.'

¹⁵ My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart will be glad, even mine; ¹⁶ Yea, my reins will rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

⁹ yet for love's sake I rather beseech, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now a prisoner also of Christ Jesus:

²⁰ Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.

⁹ And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying: 'Because I bore him with pain.' ¹⁰ And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying: 'Oh that Thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my border, and that Thy hand might be with me, and that Thou wouldest work deliverance from evil, that it may not pain me!' And God granted him that which he requested.

²⁵ A foolish son is vexation to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.

³¹ And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. ³² He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: ³³ and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

⁴⁰ and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth. ⁴¹ And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb, and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, ⁴² and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. ⁴³ And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? ⁴⁴ For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. ⁴⁵ And blessed is she that believed, for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. ⁴⁶ And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, ⁴⁷ And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

⁵⁸ And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her.

²⁷ And it came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the breasts which thou didst suck. ²⁸ But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

⁵ And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

⁴³ Whoso is wise, let him observe these things, and let them consider the mercies of the LORD.

² Happy are they that keep His testimonies, that seek Him with the whole heart.

⁹ BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man keep his way pure? By taking heed thereto according to Thy word. ¹⁰ With my whole heart have I sought Thee; O let me not err from Thy commandments. ¹¹ Thy word have I laid up in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee.

¹ My son, forget not my teaching; but let thy heart keep my commandments;

⁴ And he taught me, and said unto me: 'Let thy heart hold fast my words, keep my commandments, and live;

²³ Above all that thou guardest keep thy heart; for out of it are the issues of life.

²⁵ Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. ²⁶ Make plain the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. ²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left; remove thy foot from evil.

⁹ (14:10) Whoso is wise, let him understand these things, whoso is prudent, let him know them. For the ways of the LORD are right, and the just do walk in them; but transgressors do stumble therein.

³⁷ He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. ³⁸ And he that doth not take his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me.

²⁶ If any man cometh unto me, and hateth not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

¹⁴ For the love of Christ constraineth us, because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then all died, ¹⁵ and he died for all, that they that live should no longer live unto themselves, but unto him who for their sakes died and rose again.

⁵ and this, not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God.

¹⁷ that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, to the end that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

¹⁹ And we have the word of prophecy made more sure, whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:

¹⁴ The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.

¹ And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Moab.

⁴ And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. ⁵ And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her: 'Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.' ⁶ And Delilah said to Samson: 'Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.' ⁷ And Samson said unto her: 'If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as any other man.' ⁸ Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh bowstrings which had not been dried, and she bound him with them. ⁹ Now she had liers-in-wait abiding in the inner chamber. And she said unto him: 'The Philistines are upon thee, Samson.' And he broke the bowstrings as a string of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known. ¹⁰ And Delilah said unto Samson: 'Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies; now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.' ¹¹ And he said unto her: 'If they only bind me with new ropes wherewith no work hath been done, then shall I become weak, and be as any other man.' ¹² So Delilah took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him: 'The Philistines are upon thee, Samson.' And the liers-in-wait were abiding in the inner chamber. And he broke them from off his arms like a thread. ¹³ And Delilah said unto Samson: 'Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies; tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound.' And he said unto her: 'If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.' ¹⁴ And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him: 'The Philistines are upon thee, Samson.' And he awoke out of his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the beam, and the web. ¹⁵ And she said unto him: 'How canst thou say: I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.' ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death. ¹⁷ And he told her all his heart, and said unto her: 'There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite unto God from my mother's womb; if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.' ¹⁸ And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying: 'Come up this once, for he hath told me all his heart.' Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought the money in their hand. ¹⁹ And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and had the seven locks of his head shaven off; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. ²⁰ And she said: 'The Philistines are upon thee, Samson.' And he awoke out of his sleep, and said: 'I will go out as at other times, and shake myself.' But he knew not that the LORD was departed from him. ²¹ And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house. ²² Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.

¹⁶ To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the alien woman that maketh smooth her words; ¹⁷ That forsaketh the lord of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. ¹⁸ For her house sinketh down unto death, and her paths unto the shades; ¹⁹ None that go unto her return, neither do they attain unto the paths of life;

¹² Now she is in the streets, now in the broad places, and lieth in wait at every corner.

²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox that goeth to the slaughter, or as one in fetters to the correction of the fool; ²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver; as a bird hasteneth to the snare - and knoweth not that it is at the cost of his life. ²⁴ Now therefore, O ye children, hearken unto me, and attend to the words of my mouth. ²⁵ Let not thy heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. ²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded; yea, a mighty host are all her slain. ²⁷ Her house is the way to the nether-world, going down to the chambers of death.

¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the shades are there; that her guests are in the depths of the nether-world.

²⁶ and I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands; whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

² Lift up thine eyes unto the high hills, and see: Where hast thou not been lain with? By the ways hast thou sat for them, as an Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy harlotries and with thy wickedness.

¹¹ Harlotry, wine, and new wine take away the heart.

⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

¹ And there came one of the seven angels that had the seven bowls, and spake with me, saying, Come hither, I will show thee the judgment of the great harlot that sitteth upon the many waters, ² with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and they that dwell in the earth were made drunken with the wine of her fornication.

¹² His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

²⁸ And Absalom commanded his servants, saying: 'Mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you: Smite Amnon, then kill him, fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.'

¹⁶ And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the booths, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him. ¹⁷ And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying: 'There are men come out from Samaria.' ¹⁸ And he said: 'Whether they are come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they are come out for war, take them alive.' ¹⁹ So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them. ²⁰ And they slew every one his man; and the Arameans fled, and Israel pursued them; and Ben-hadad the king of Aram escaped on a horse with horsemen. ²¹ And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Arameans with a great slaughter. ²² And the prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said unto him: 'Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest; for at the return of the year the king of Aram will come up against thee.'

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

⁷ But these also reel through wine, and stagger through strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel through strong drink, they are confused because of wine, they stagger because of strong drink; they reel in vision, they totter in judgment. ⁸ For all tables are full of filthy vomit, and no place is clean.

¹⁰ For though they be like tangled thorns, and be drunken according to their drink, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

⁴⁹ and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken, ⁵⁰ the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not,

⁴⁵ But if that servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming, and shall begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken, ⁴⁶ the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the unfaithful.

²¹ And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

⁸ (75:9) For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, with foaming wine, full of mixture, and He poureth out of the same; surely the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall drain them, and drink them.

² She hath prepared her meat, she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.

⁶ That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but they are not grieved for the hurt of Joseph.

²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; neither let her captivate thee with her eyelids.

²⁸ but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. ³⁰ And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

⁴⁷ And if thine eye cause thee to stumble, cast it out; it is good for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire,

⁵ And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth My hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.' ⁶ And Moses and Aaron did so; as the LORD commanded them, so did they.

¹² For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents; but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.

¹⁶ He shall suck the poison of asps; the viper's tongue shall slay him.

¹¹ And thou moan, when thine end cometh, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

⁸ He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a fence, a serpent shall bite him.

³ The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under foot;

⁵ They hatch basilisks' eggs, and weave the spider's web; he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.

³¹ The prophets prophesy in the service of falsehood, and the priests bear rule at their beck; and My people love to have it so; What then will ye do in the end thereof?

¹⁷ For, behold, I will send serpents, basilisks, among you, which will not be charmed; and they shall bite you, saith the LORD.

¹⁹ As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; and went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

³ And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from My sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them.

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish. ²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that they that would pass from hence to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from thence to us.

²¹ What fruit then had ye at that time in the things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

³² Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.' ³³ And they made their father drink wine that night. And the first-born went in, and lay with her father; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. ³⁴ And it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said unto the younger: 'Behold, I lay yesternight with my father. Let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.' ³⁵ And they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose, and lay with him; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. ³⁶ Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. ³⁷ And the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab - the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. ³⁸ And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi - the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

¹² (69:13) They that sit in the gate talk of me; and I am the song of the drunkards.

¹² To deliver thee from the way of evil, from the men that speak froward things;

⁵ Lest they drink, and forget that which is decreed, and pervert the justice due to any that is afflicted.

⁴ They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

⁵ On the day of our king the princes make him sick with the heat of wine, he stretcheth out his hand with scorners.

³³ and blessed be thy discretion, and blessed be thou, that hast kept me this day from bloodguiltiness, and from finding redress for myself with mine own hand. ³⁴ For in very deed, as the LORD, the God of Israel, liveth, who hath withholden me from hurting thee, except thou hadst made haste and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light so much as one male.' ³⁵ So David received of her hand that which she had brought him; and he said unto her: 'Go up in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.' ³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, so that he died.

¹⁶ And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad over all the ground, eating and drinking, and feasting, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah. ¹⁷ And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day; and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, who rode upon camels and fled.

⁹ And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him; now he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, who was over the household in Tirzah;

³⁸ For as in the days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

² For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. ³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child, and they shall in no wise escape. ⁴ But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief: ⁵ for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day; we are not of the night, nor of darkness, ⁶ so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that are drunken are drunken in the night.

¹⁹ (29:18) and it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying: 'I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart - that the watered be swept away with the dry';

¹¹ As a dog that returneth to his vomit, so is a fool that repeateth his folly.

²² Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar with a pestle among groats, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

¹² 'Come ye, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to-morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.'

³ O LORD, are not Thine eyes upon truth? Thou hast stricken them, but they were not affected; Thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction; they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself: 'Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf untrained; turn thou me, and I shall be turned, for Thou art the LORD my God.

³² If after the manner of men I fought with beasts at Ephesus, what doth it profit me? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die. ³³ Be not deceived; Evil companionships corrupt good morals. ³⁴ Awake to soberness righteously, and sin not, for some have no knowledge of God; I speak this to move you to shame.

¹⁹ who being past feeling gave themselves up to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

²² But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.
