⁴⁰ They asked, and He brought quails, and gave them in plenty the bread of heaven.

¹² 'I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. Speak unto them, saying: At dusk ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.' ¹³ And it came to pass at even, that the quails came up, and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew round about the camp. ¹⁴ And when the layer of dew was gone up, behold upon the face of the wilderness a fine, scale-like thing, fine as the hoar-frost on the ground. ¹⁵ And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another: 'What is it?' - for they knew not what it was. And Moses said unto them: 'It is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat. ¹⁶ This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded: Gather ye of it every man according to his eating; an omer a head, according to the number of your persons, shall ye take it, every man for them that are in his tent.' ¹⁷ And the children of Israel did so, and gathered some more, some less. ¹⁸ And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating. ¹⁹ And Moses said unto them: 'Let no man leave of it till the morning.' ²⁰ Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and rotted; and Moses was wroth with them. ²¹ And they gathered it morning by morning, every man according to his eating; and as the sun waxed hot, it melted. ²² And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one; and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. ²³ And he said unto them: 'This is that which the LORD hath spoken: To-morrow is a solemn rest, a holy sabbath unto the LORD. Bake that which ye will bake, and seethe that which ye will seethe; and all that remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.' ²⁴ And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade; and it did not rot, neither was there any worm therein. ²⁵ And Moses said: 'Eat that to-day; for to-day is a sabbath unto the LORD; to-day ye shall not find it in the field. ²⁶ Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.' ²⁷ And it came to pass on the seventh day, that there went out some of the people to gather, and they found none. ²⁸ And the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long refuse ye to keep My commandments and My laws? ²⁹ See that the LORD hath given you the sabbath; therefore He giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.' ³⁰ So the people rested on the seventh day. ³¹ And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna; and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. ³² And Moses said: 'This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded: Let an omerful of it be kept throughout your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.' ³³ And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Take a jar, and put an omerful of manna therein, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept throughout your generations.' ³⁴ As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. ³⁵ And the children of Israel did eat the manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat the manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

⁴ And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting; and the children of Israel also wept on their part, and said: 'Would that we were given flesh to eat! ⁵ We remember the fish, which we were wont to eat in Egypt for nought; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic; ⁶ but now our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all; we have nought save this manna to look to.' - ⁷ Now the manna was like coriander seed, and the appearance thereof as the appearance of bdellium. ⁸ The people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and seethed it in pots, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was as the taste of a cake baked with oil. ⁹ And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it. -

³¹ And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought across quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day's journey on this side, and a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits above the face of the earth. ³² And the people rose up all that day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails; he that gathered least gathered ten heaps; and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp. ³³ While the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

³ And He afflicted thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every thing that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

¹² And the manna ceased on the morrow, after they had eaten of the produce of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

²⁰ Thou gavest also Thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not Thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

¹⁸ And they tried God in their heart by asking food for their craving.

²³ And He commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven; ²⁴ And He caused manna to rain upon them for food, and gave them of the corn of heaven. ²⁵ Man did eat the bread of the mighty; He sent them provisions to the full. ²⁶ He caused the east wind to set forth in heaven; and by His power He brought on the south wind. ²⁷ He caused flesh also to rain upon them as the dust, and winged fowl as the sand of the seas; ²⁸ And He let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their dwellings.

³¹ Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat. ³² Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, It was not Moses that gave you the bread out of heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread out of heaven. ³³ For the bread of God is that which cometh down out of heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

⁴⁸ I am the bread of life. ⁴⁹ Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. ⁵⁰ This is the bread which cometh down out of heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. ⁵¹ I am the living bread which came down out of heaven; if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. ⁵² The Jews therefore strove one with another, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? ⁵³ Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have not life in yourselves. ⁵⁴ He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. ⁵⁵ For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. ⁵⁶ He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me, and I in him. ⁵⁷ As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he that eateth me, he also shall live because of me. ⁵⁸ This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as your fathers ate the manna, and died, he that eateth this bread shall live for ever.
