⁶ And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

⁷ If you do well, shall you not be accepted? and if you do not well, sin lies at the door. And you shall be its desire, and you must rule over it.

¹⁸ And he said, What pledge shall I give you? And she said, Your signet, and your bracelets, and your staff that is in your hand. And he gave it to her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him. ¹⁹ And she arose, and went away, and laid by her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. ²⁰ And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not. ²¹ Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the wayside? And they said, There was no harlot in this place. ²² And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, There was no harlot in this place. ²³ And Judah said, Let her keep it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and you have not found her.

³⁰ Then he said, I have sinned: yet honor me now, I pray you, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD your God.

¹² Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue; ¹³ Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth: ¹⁴ Yet his food in his body is soured, it is the gall of asps within him.

¹³ He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whosoever confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.

¹³ Therefore the Lord said, Since this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

⁷⁰ But he denied it before them all, saying, I know not what you say.

⁷² And again he denied it with an oath, I do not know the man.

⁷⁴ Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crowed.
