¹² But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

⁹ And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

² For wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the simple one.

²⁴ And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies.

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

⁴ Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but which is able to stand before jealousy?

¹⁹ The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Do you see how you can do nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

² Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. ³ And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day: for it was now evening. ⁴ But many of them who heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.

²⁸ Saying, Did not we strictly command you that you should not teach in this name? and, behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. ²⁹ Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. ³⁰ The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you slew and hanged on a tree. ³¹ Him has God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. ³² And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to them that obey him. ³³ When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.

²⁸ And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

⁶ For whom the Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives. ⁷ If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chastens not? ⁸ But if you be without chastisement, of which all are partakers, then are you illegitimate children, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them who are trained by it.
