¹ I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I think upon a maiden? ² For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is not destruction to the wicked? and a disaster to the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Does not he see my ways, and count all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot has hastened to deceit; ⁶ Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity. ⁷ If my step has turned out of the way, and my heart walked after my eyes, and if any spot has cleaved to my hands; ⁸ Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out. ⁹ If my heart has been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door; ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is a heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges. ¹² For it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase. ¹³ If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God rises up? and when he comes, what shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it; ¹⁸ (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided him from my mother’s womb;) ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; ²⁰ If his heart has not blessed me, and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw I had help in the gate: ²² Then let my arm fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its socket. ²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his majesty I could not endure. ²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, You are my confidence; ²⁵ If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much; ²⁶ If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in brightness; ²⁷ And my heart has been secretly enticed, or my mouth has kissed my hand: ²⁸ This also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. ²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him: ³⁰ Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul. ³¹ If the men of my tent have not, Oh that we had of his meat! we cannot be satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveler. ³³ If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom: ³⁴ Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door? ³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him. ³⁸ If my land cries against me, and its furrows likewise complain; ³⁹ If I have eaten its fruit without payment, or have caused its owners to lose their life: ⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and weeds instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

² That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

² And it came to pass in an evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ³ And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? ⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.

³⁷ Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity; and revive me in your way.

²⁵ Let your eyes look directly forward, and let your eyelids look straight before you.

²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in your heart; neither let her allure you with her eyelids.

³¹ Look not you upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its color in the cup, when it moves itself aright. ³² At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder. ³³ Your eyes shall behold strange things, and your heart shall utter perverse things.

²⁸ But I say unto you, That whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ And if your right eye causes you to offend, pluck it out, and cast it from you: for it is better for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be cast into hell.

¹⁴ But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.

⁴ Let marriage be held in honor by all, and the bed undefiled: but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

³⁰ That the wicked are reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

²² There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

²³ But you, O God, shall bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in you.

¹⁸ Surely you did set them in slippery places: you cast them down into destruction.

²⁷ When your terror comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you.

²⁹ The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

¹⁵ It is joy to the just to do justice: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

²¹ For the LORD shall rise up as on mount Perazim, he shall be angry as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his awesome work; and bring to pass his act, his alien act.

¹³ Enter in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be who go in there:

²² What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

⁹ Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

¹ But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who shall secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after unnatural lust, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

¹³ And she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, You God, see me: for she said, Have I also here seen him that sees me?

⁹ For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. In this you have done foolishly: therefore from now on you shall have wars.

¹⁶ For now you number my steps: do not watch over my sin.

²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps.

²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knows the secrets of the heart.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] O LORD, you have searched me, and known me. ² You know my downsitting and my uprising, you understand my thought afar off. ³ You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths.

³ The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

¹⁷ For my eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from my eyes.

¹⁹ Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for your eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

⁴⁸ Nathanael said unto him, Where do you know me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.

¹³ Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

² O you sons of men, how long will you turn my glory into shame? how long will you love vanity, and seek after falsehood? Selah.

³ O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; ⁴ If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is my enemy:) ⁵ Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah.

² They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; ²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knows the secrets of the heart.

¹¹ He that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that follows vain persons is void of understanding.

⁵ Thus says the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

⁸ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; Because you have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, says the Lord GOD.

¹¹ If a man walking in the spirit of falsehood does lie, saying, I will prophesy unto you of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.

²² The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knows, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)

³ Talk no more so very proudly; let not arrogance come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

² Oh that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!

⁵ God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove my integrity from me. ⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

⁶ For the LORD knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

⁸ The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to my integrity that is in me. ⁹ Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God tests the minds and hearts.

² Let my vindication come forth from your presence; let your eyes behold the things that are right. ³ You have proved my heart; you have visited me in the night; you have tested me, and shall find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

¹ [A Psalm of David.] Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in my integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

¹¹ A just weight and balance are the LORD's: all the weights in the bag are his work.

⁷ The way of the just is uprightness: you, most upright, do smooth the path of the just.

²⁷ TEKEL; you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.

¹¹ Shall I count those pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?

²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.

¹⁹ Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows them that are his. And, Let every one that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

³⁹ And it shall be unto you a tassel, that you may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that you seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you use to follow harlotry:

³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands ever so clean;

¹¹ My foot has held fast to his steps, his way have I kept, and not turned aside.

³ I will set no wicked thing before my eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in your youth; and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes: but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

¹⁵ He that walks righteously, and speaks uprightly; he that despises the gain of oppressions, that keeps his hands from the holding of bribes, that stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil;

⁹ And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations where they shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their adulterous heart, which has departed from me, and with their eyes, which play the harlot after their idols: and they shall loathe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

³ Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their faces: should I be inquired of at all by them?

⁷ For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourns in Israel, who separates himself from me, and sets up his idols in his heart, and puts the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and comes to a prophet to inquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:

²⁹ And if your right eye causes you to offend, pluck it out, and cast it from you: for it is better for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be cast into hell.

¹⁶ I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning fever, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

³⁰ You shall betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: you shall build a house, and you shall not dwell therein: you shall plant a vineyard, and shall not gather the grapes thereof. ³¹ Your ox shall be slain before your eyes, and you shall not eat thereof: your donkey shall be violently taken away from before your face, and shall not be restored to you: your sheep shall be given unto your enemies, and you shall have none to rescue them. ³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given unto another people, and your eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no strength in your hand. ³³ The fruit of your land, and all your labors, shall a nation which you know not eat up; and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually:

³⁸ You shall carry much seed out into the field, and shall gather but little in; for the locust shall consume it.

⁵¹ And he shall eat the fruit of your cattle, and the fruit of your land, until you are destroyed: who also shall not leave you either grain, wine, or oil, or the increase of your cattle, or offspring of your sheep, until he has destroyed you.

³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them; ⁴ And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till you come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey. ⁵ For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it. ⁶ And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eats up, and takes it even out of the thorns, and the robber swallows up their wealth.

³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

¹⁹ He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

¹⁸ That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: from the proceeds of business he shall not rejoice.

⁶ They reap every one his grain in the field: and they gather the vineyard of the wicked.

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

¹⁵ You shall sow, but you shall not reap; you shall tread the olives, but you shall not anoint yourself with oil; and make sweet wine, but shall not drink wine.

⁵ And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see where his great strength lies, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will all give you eleven hundred pieces of silver.

⁴ For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did foreign women cause to sin.

¹⁵ The eye also of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguises his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light.

¹⁶ To deliver you from the immoral woman, even from the seductress who flatters with her words; ¹⁷ Who forsakes the companion of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her God. ¹⁸ For her house leads unto death, and her paths unto the dead. ¹⁹ None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

³ For the lips of an immoral woman drop as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: ⁴ But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. ⁵ Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on sheol. ⁶ Lest you should ponder the path of life, her ways are unstable, that you can not know them. ⁷ Hear me now therefore, O you children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. ⁸ Remove your way far from her, and come not near the door of her house: ⁹ Lest you give your honor unto others, and your years unto the merciless: ¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with your wealth; and your labors go to the house of a foreigner; ¹¹ And you mourn at the last, when your flesh and your body are consumed, ¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me! ¹⁴ I was almost in utter ruin in the midst of the congregation and assembly. ¹⁵ Drink waters out of your own cistern, and running waters out of your own well. ¹⁶ Should your fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets? ¹⁷ Let them be only for your own, and not for strangers with you. ¹⁸ Let your fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of your youth. ¹⁹ Let her be as the loving deer and graceful doe; let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and be ravished always with her love. ²⁰ And why will you, my son, be infatuated with an immoral woman, and embrace the bosom of a seductress? ²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths. ²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be held with the cords of his sins. ²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

²¹ With her enticing speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she seduced him.

¹⁴ The mouth of immoral women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.

²⁶ And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands are fetters: whosoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning: everyone neighed after his neighbor’s wife.

⁴ They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceases to stir the fire after he has kneaded the dough, until it is leavened.

⁵ And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sits upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.

³⁰ You shall betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: you shall build a house, and you shall not dwell therein: you shall plant a vineyard, and shall not gather the grapes thereof.

¹¹ Thus says the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house, and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them unto your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.

² Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover your locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

¹⁰ Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for everyone from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest everyone deals falsely.

¹³ They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because its shadow is good: therefore your daughters shall commit harlotry, and your spouses shall commit adultery. ¹⁴ I will not punish your daughters when they commit harlotry, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for the men themselves are gone apart with harlots, and they sacrifice with prostitutes: therefore the people that do not understand shall fall.

⁴¹ Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

⁹ Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What have you done unto us? and how have I offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? you have done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, What is this you have done unto us? one of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guiltiness upon us.

²⁴ And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by harlotry. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

⁹ There is none greater in this house than I; neither has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

¹⁴ You shall not commit adultery.

¹⁰ And the man that commits adultery with another man's wife, even he that commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

²² If a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shall you put away evil from Israel. ²³ If a young woman that is a virgin be betrothed unto a husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; ²⁴ Then you shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and you shall stone them with stones so that they die; the young woman, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he has violated his neighbor's wife: so you shall put away evil from among you.

²⁸ This also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

²⁹ So is he that goes in to his neighbor's wife; whosoever touches her shall not be innocent. ³⁰ Men do not despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; ³¹ But if he is found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give up all the goods of his house. ³² But whosoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he that does it destroys his own soul. ³³ A wound and dishonor shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

³⁸ And I will judge you, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will bring blood upon you in fury and jealousy.

²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

⁶ Sheol is naked before him, and destruction has no covering.

³³ The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesses the habitation of the just.

²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

⁷ How shall I pardon you for this? your children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses. ⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning: everyone neighed after his neighbor’s wife. ⁹ Shall I not punish for these things? says the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

⁵ And I will come near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner from his right, and fear not me, says the LORD of hosts.

²⁰ And if a man strikes his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he dies under his hand; he shall be surely punished. ²¹ But, if he continues a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his property.

²⁶ And if a man strikes the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. ²⁷ And if he knocks out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.

⁴³ You shall not rule over him with harshness; but shall fear your God.

⁴⁶ And you shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your slaves forever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, you shall not rule one over another with harshness.

¹² And if your brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, be sold unto you, and serve you six years; then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. ¹³ And when you send him out free from you, you shall not let him go away empty: ¹⁴ You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, and out of your threshing floor, and out of your winepress: of that with which the LORD your God has blessed you you shall give unto him. ¹⁵ And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you: therefore I command you this thing today.

¹⁴ You shall not oppress a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of your brethren, or of your strangers that are in your land within your gates: ¹⁵ Each day you shall give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and sets his heart upon it: lest he cry against you unto the LORD, and it be sin unto you.

¹⁴ At the end of seven years let you go every man his brother, a Hebrew, who has been sold unto you; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear. ¹⁵ And you were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor; and you had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: ¹⁶ But you turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom you had set at liberty, at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. ¹⁷ Therefore thus says the LORD; You have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, everyone to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, says the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁹ And, you masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

¹ Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in trial.

² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; show me why you contend with me.

⁶ Arise, O LORD, in your anger, lift up yourself because of the rage of my enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that you have commanded.

¹² When he avenges blood, he remembers them: he forgets not the cry of the humble.

¹⁹ Arise, O LORD; let not man prevail: let the nations be judged in your sight.

¹² Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand: forget not the humble. ¹³ Why does the wicked renounce God? he has said in his heart, You will not require it. ¹⁴ You have seen it: for you behold mischief and spite, to repay it with your hand: the poor commits himself unto you; you are the helper of the fatherless. ¹⁵ Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till you find none.

⁹ When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.

² And enter not into judgment with your servant: for in your sight shall no man living be justified.

³ And what will you do in the day of punishment, and in the desolation which shall come from afar? to whom will you flee for help? and where will you leave your riches?

⁷ The days of punishment have come, the days of recompense have come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, because of the multitude of your iniquity, and the great hatred.

⁴ The best of them is like a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of your watchmen and your punishment comes; now shall be their perplexity.

¹³ Be silent, all flesh, before the LORD: for he has raised up out of his holy habitation.

² And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashed, hands, they found fault.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatsoever things the law says, it says to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

¹³ For he shall have judgment without mercy, that has showed no mercy; and mercy triumphs over judgment.

⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

³ Is it good unto you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile upon the counsel of the wicked?

⁸ Your hands have made me and fashioned me together totally; yet you do destroy me. ⁹ Remember, I beseech you, that you have made me as the clay; and will you bring me into dust again? ¹⁰ Have you not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese? ¹¹ You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and have knit me together with bones and sinews. ¹² You have granted me life and favor, and your care has preserved my spirit.

¹⁹ How much less to him that regards not the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

¹⁴ I will praise you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are your works; and that my soul knows right well. ¹⁵ My frame was not hid from you, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. ¹⁶ Your eyes did see my substance, being yet unformed; and in your book they were all written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.

³¹ He that oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker: but he that honors him has mercy on the poor.

² The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.

⁷ Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring the poor that are cast out to your house? when you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you hide not yourself from your own flesh?

¹⁰ Have we not all one father? has not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

⁷ If there be among you a poor man of one of your brethren within any of your gates in your land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother: ⁸ But you shall open your hand wide unto him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he lacks. ⁹ Beware that there be not a thought in your wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and your eye be evil against your poor brother, and you give him nothing; and he cries unto the LORD against you, and it be sin in you. ¹⁰ You shall surely give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give unto him: because for this thing the LORD your God shall bless you in all your works, and in all that you put your hand unto.

³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given unto another people, and your eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no strength in your hand.

¹⁶ So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth.

¹⁹ Because he has oppressed and has forsaken the poor; because he has violently taken away a house which he built not;

⁷ You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honorable man dwelt in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

³ I am weary from my crying: my throat is dried: my eyes fail while I wait for my God.

⁹ He has dispersed, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his strength shall be exalted with honor.

⁸² My eyes fail for your word, saying, When will you comfort me?

¹²³ My eyes fail for your salvation, and for the word of your righteousness.

¹⁴ Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: my eyes fail with looking upward: O LORD, I am oppressed; undertake for me.

¹⁷ As for us, our eyes as yet failed, watching for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.

²¹ And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

²⁹ Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren who dwelt in Judea:

¹⁰ Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was eager to do.

¹¹ For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command you, saying, you shall open your hand wide unto your brother, to your poor, and to your needy, in your land.

¹⁴ You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, and out of your threshing floor, and out of your winepress: of that with which the LORD your God has blessed you you shall give unto him.

¹⁰ Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet wine, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be you grieved; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

⁷ And has not oppressed any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has robbed none by violence, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

²⁷ Pure religion and undefiled before God the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

¹⁷ But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother have need, and shuts up his heart of compassion from him, how dwells the love of God in him?

¹⁵ And the men who were mentioned by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and dressed them, and gave them sandals, and gave them food and drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon donkeys, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.

⁶ For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

⁴ They drive the needy off the road: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.

¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.

³⁶ Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came unto me.

⁴³ I was a stranger, and you took me not in: naked, and you clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and you visited me not.

¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.

³⁹ Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

¹⁶ And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled; yet you give them not those things which are needful to the body; what does it profit?

¹⁸ My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

¹³ In any case you shall deliver him the pledge again when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his own clothing, and bless you: and it shall be righteousness unto you before the LORD your God.

¹¹ When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:

²⁷ Yea, you overwhelm the fatherless, and you dig a pit for your friend.

⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁹ They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge from the poor.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.

¹⁰ Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: ¹¹ For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with you.

²⁸ They have grown fat, they shine: yea, they pass over the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not defend.

⁷ In you have they made light of father and mother: in the midst of you have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in you have they wronged the fatherless and the widow.

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

³ That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asks, and the judge asks for a bribe; and the great man, he utters his evil desire: so they weave it together.

²² The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knows, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,) ²³ That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer thereon burnt offerings or grain offerings, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require an account;

¹⁰ Then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her.

⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and weeds instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the uplifted arm shall be broken.

⁶ If I do not remember you, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

¹¹ Shall not his excellence make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?

²³ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.

²⁰ His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

⁹ Have you an arm like God? or can you thunder with a voice like him?

⁵ I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear: but now my eye sees you. ⁶ Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

⁷ You, even you, are to be feared: and who may stand in your sight when once you are angry?

¹²⁰ My flesh trembles for fear of you; and I am afraid of your judgments.

⁶ Wail you; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.

¹⁵ Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

¹¹ Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

¹ And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob has taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's has he gotten all this wealth.

¹² Lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built fine houses, and dwelt in them; ¹³ And when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; ¹⁴ Then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

⁶ They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁷ None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

¹⁷ For when he dies he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.

⁷ Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

¹⁰ Trust not in oppression, and hope not vainly in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

¹⁵ The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the ruin of the poor is their poverty.

²⁸ He that trusts in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

⁹ Lest I be full, and deny you, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

²⁴ And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answered again, and said unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.

⁵ Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹⁷ Charge them that are rich in this present age, that they be not haughty, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy;

¹⁷ And you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth. ¹⁸ But you shall remember the LORD your God: for it is he that gives you power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swore unto your fathers, as it is this day.

¹¹ And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things in which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.

⁵ Will you set your eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

¹³ For he says, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man: ¹⁴ And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathers eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

²³ Thus says the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

⁵ By your great wisdom and by your trade have you increased your riches, and your heart is lifted up because of your riches:

³⁰ The king spoke, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty?

⁸ And Ephraim said, Yet I have become rich, I have found myself wealth: in all my labors they shall find no iniquity in me that is sin.

¹⁶ Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their dragnet; because by them their portion is luxurious, and their food plentiful.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted sumptuously every day:

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented.

¹⁶ And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. ¹⁷ And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, ¹⁸ And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

¹⁹ And lest you lift up your eyes unto heaven, and when you see the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, should be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD your God has apportioned unto all nations under the whole heaven.

¹⁶ Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;

³ And has gone and served other gods, and worshiped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;

⁵ And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the hosts of heaven.

¹¹ And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entrance of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of Nathan-melech the chamberlain, which was in the court, and burned the chariots of the sun with fire.

³ When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained; ⁴ What is man, that you are mindful of him? and the son of man, that you visit him?

² And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshiped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for refuse upon the face of the earth.

¹⁷ But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goes forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of food, and were well-off, and saw no evil.

¹⁶ And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD’S house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshiped the sun toward the east.

⁶ If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend, who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known, you, nor your fathers;

¹⁸ Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.

¹² Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

²⁰ He feeds on ashes: a deceived heart has turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

² And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.

²¹ Because, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

²⁸ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not proper;

²⁵ That be far from you to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from you: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

² If there be found among you, within any of your gates which the LORD your God gives you, man or woman, that has done wickedness in the sight of the LORD your God, in transgressing his covenant, ³ And has gone and served other gods, and worshiped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded; ⁴ And it be told you, and you have heard of it, and inquired diligently, and, behold, it is true, and the thing certain, that such abomination has been done in Israel: ⁵ Then shall you bring forth that man or that woman, who has committed that wicked thing, unto your gates, even that man or that woman, and shall stone them with stones, till they die. ⁶ At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. ⁷ The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So you shall put the evil away from among you.

⁹ And you shall come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days, and inquire; and they shall show you the sentence of judgment:

²³ Now therefore put away, said he, the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.

²⁷ And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it has heard all the words of the LORD which he spoke unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest you deny your God.

²⁷ Therefore I have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

¹⁵ For, though I were righteous, yet could I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

⁷ There the righteous might reason with him; so should I be delivered forever from my judge.

¹¹ For this is a heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

⁶ And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.

¹⁶ They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

²³ To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, who are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

²³ Whosoever denies the Son, the same has not the Father: [but] he that confesses the Son has the Father also.

⁴ For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into licentiousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

¹² And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until evening, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

¹⁰ When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings: ¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?

⁵ And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed continually as he came. ⁶ And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. ⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, you bloody man, and you man of Belial: ⁸ The LORD has returned upon you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned; and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son: and, behold, you are taken in your mischief, because you are a bloody man.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into my own bosom. ¹⁴ I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourns for his mother.

²⁵ Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up. ²⁶ Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at my hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonor that magnify themselves against me.

⁵ Whosoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker: and he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

¹⁷ Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles: ¹⁸ Lest the LORD sees it, and it displeases him, and he turns away his wrath from him.

¹² But you should not have looked down on the day of your brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither should you have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

⁴ If you meet your enemy's ox or his donkey going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again. ⁵ If you see the donkey of him who hates you lying under its burden, and would refrain to help him, you shall surely help with him.

² Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter anything before God: for God is in heaven, and you upon earth: therefore let your words be few.

⁶ Permit not your mouth to cause your flesh to sin; neither say before the angel, that it was an error: why should God be angry at your voice, and destroy the work of your hands?

²² But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, You fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

⁴³ You have heard that it has been said, You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. ⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you;

³⁶ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

¹⁴ Bless them who persecute you: bless, and curse not.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

⁹ With this bless we God, even the Father; and with this curse we men, who are made after the similitude of God. ¹⁰ Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

²² Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: ²³ Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judges righteously:

⁹ Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but on the contrary blessing; knowing that you are unto this called, that you should inherit a blessing.

⁴ And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto you, Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it shall seem good unto you. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe stealthily.

¹⁰ Behold, this day your eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered you today into my hand in the cave: and some bade me kill you: but my eye spared you; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed.

⁸ Then said Abishai to David, God has delivered your enemy into your hand this day: now therefore let me strike him, I pray you, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not strike him the second time.

⁹ Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray you, and take off his head. ¹⁰ And the king said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the LORD has said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Why have you done so?

²¹ But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’S anointed? ²² And David said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

²² Why do you persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

² When the wicked, even my enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.

²⁵ Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause: ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

¹⁸ And they lie in wait for their own blood; they lurk secretly for their own lives.

¹⁵ Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray you, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: why should he slay you, that all the Jews who are gathered unto you should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish? ¹⁶ But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, You shall not do this thing: for you speak falsely of Ishmael.

² Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

⁵⁴ And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, will you that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elijah did? ⁵⁵ But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, You know not what manner of spirit you are of.

⁵⁰ And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. ⁵¹ And Jesus answered and said, No more of this. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

² And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and you shall rise up early, and go on your way. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. ³ And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

¹⁵ And they turned aside there, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat himself down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.

²⁰ And the old man said, Peace be with you; however let all your needs lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. ²¹ So he brought him into his house, and gave fodder unto the donkeys: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it; ¹⁸ (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided him from my mother’s womb;)

³⁵ For I was hungry, and you gave me food: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in:

⁴⁰ And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Since you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.

⁴⁴ Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you hungry, or thirsty or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto you? ⁴⁵ Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Since you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.

¹⁰ Well reported of for good works; if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.

² Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

⁹ Practice hospitality one to another without grudging.

⁷ And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. ⁸ And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

¹² And the man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

¹¹ Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and deceived also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

¹³ He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whosoever confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.

⁷ But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.

⁸ And Peter said unto her, Tell me whether you sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

² You shall not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shall you testify in a dispute to follow after a crowd to pervert judgment:

²⁷ And he said unto them, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.

¹⁴ Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a head of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites. ¹⁵ And the name of the Midianite woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and a father’s house in Midian.

⁷ Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, you exact interest, every one from his brother. And I held a great assembly against them.

⁴ And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah: ⁵ And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where previously they stored the grain offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers; and the offerings of the priests. ⁶ But in all this time I was not at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king: ⁷ And I came to Jerusalem, and discovered the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. ⁸ And it grieved me greatly: therefore I cast forth all the household goods of Tobiah out of the chamber.

²⁸ And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

¹¹ All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden scepter, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

¹⁴ For if you altogether hold your peace at this time, then shall relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but you and your father's house shall be destroyed: and who knows whether you are come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honorable man dwelt in it.

¹¹ Deliver those that are drawn toward death, hold back those that are stumbling to the slaughter; ¹² If you say, Behold, we knew it not; does not he that weighs the heart consider it? and he that keeps your soul, does not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

²⁵ The fear of man brings a snare: but whosoever puts his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

⁴ Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech you, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeks not the welfare of this people, but the harm. ⁵ Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not able to do anything against you.

¹⁶ So Zedekiah the king swore secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD lives, that made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men that seek your life.

¹⁹ And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that have fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

¹¹ Since therefore you tread upon the poor, and you take from him burdens of wheat: you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink wine of them. ¹² For I know your manifold transgressions, and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right. ¹³ Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

²⁰ But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. ²¹ The governor answered and said unto them, Which of the two will you that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. ²² Pilate said unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus who is called Christ? They all said unto him, Let him be crucified. ²³ And the governor said, Why, what evil has he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. ²⁴ When Pilate saw that he could gain nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see you to it. ²⁵ Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. ²⁶ Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

¹⁶ Therefore from now on know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet from now on know we him no more.

³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me: and let not your dread make me afraid. ²² Then call, and I will answer: or let me speak, and you answer me.

²⁴ Why hide you your face, and hold me for your enemy?

³ Lay down a surety for me with you; who is he that will give surety for me?

⁷ Behold, I cry out concerning wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no justice.

¹¹ He has also kindled his wrath against me, and he counts me unto him as one of his enemies.

²³ Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book! ²⁴ That they were engraved with an iron pen and lead in the rock forever!

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me. ⁶ Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. ⁷ There the righteous might reason with him; so should I be delivered forever from my judge.

⁷ Let my enemy be as the wicked, and he that rises up against me as the unrighteous.

²⁸ I went mourning but not in the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.

⁶ Behold, I am according to your wish in God’s stead: I also am formed out of the clay.

¹⁰ Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy, ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks, he marks all my paths.

¹⁴ Although you say you shall not see him, yet justice is before him; therefore you must trust in him.

¹ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, ² Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? ³ Gird up now your loins like a man; for I will demand of you, and you answer me.

⁴ Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer you? I will lay my hand upon my mouth. ⁵ Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

²⁵ Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.

¹² And you shall put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial.

¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a turban.

²² And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

³ You shall also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

¹ Therefore, my brethren, dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.

²⁸ And he said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince have you power with God and with men, and have prevailed.

³ His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

³ If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will defend my own ways before him.

²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt like a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered what I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. ⁴ Hear, I ask you, and I will speak: I will question you, and you declare unto me.

¹² Who can understand his errors? cleanse me from secret faults.

¹² In whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in him.

¹⁵ For we have not a high priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our weaknesses; but was in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin. ¹⁶ Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

¹⁹ And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. ²⁰ For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart condemns us not, then have we confidence toward God.

²⁷ The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.

¹³ The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with grain; they shout for joy, they also sing.

¹¹ For the stone shall cry out from the wall, and the beam from the timber shall answer it.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, cries: and the cries of them who have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts.

¹² When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield unto you its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shall you be in the earth.

¹³ And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, so that he died. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead. ¹⁵ And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

¹⁹ And you shall speak unto him, saying, Thus says the LORD, Have you killed, and also taken possession? And you shall speak unto him, saying, Thus says the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your blood, even yours.

¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone that is greedy of gain; which takes away the life of its owners.

²¹ For, behold, the LORD comes out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her bloodshed, and shall no more cover her slain.

⁶ Behold, the princes of Israel, each one in you used his power to shed blood.

¹² In you have they taken bribes to shed blood; you have taken interest and increase, and you have greedily gained from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten me, says the Lord GOD. ¹³ Behold, therefore I have struck my hands together at your dishonest gain which you have made, and at your blood which has been in the midst of you.

¹⁷ And unto Adam he said, Because you have listened unto the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it: cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of your life; ¹⁸ Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants of the field;

²⁰ The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

²³ And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place, where there could be a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels, it shall even be briers and thorns.

⁹ Therefore as I live, says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of weeds, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall plunder them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.

³ And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the jackals of the wilderness.
