¹ Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin as wife. ² And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept greatly; ³ And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel? ⁴ And it came to pass the next day, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. ⁵ And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death. ⁶ And the children of Israel grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day. ⁷ What shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters as wives? ⁸ And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpah to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabeshgilead to the assembly. ⁹ For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead there. ¹⁰ And the congregation sent there twelve thousand of the most valiant men, and commanded them, saying, Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children. ¹¹ And this is the thing that you shall do, you shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that has lain with a man. ¹² And they found among the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. ¹³ And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them. ¹⁴ And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabeshgilead: and yet they did not suffice for them. ¹⁵ And the people grieved for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel. ¹⁶ Then the elders of the congregation said, What shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? ¹⁷ And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel. ¹⁸ However we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that gives a wife to Benjamin. ¹⁹ Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah. ²⁰ Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards; ²¹ And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come you out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. ²² And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favorable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for you did not give unto them at this time, that you should be guilty. ²³ And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them. ²⁴ And the children of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance. ²⁵ In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

¹² Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you go, lest it be for a snare in the midst of you: ¹³ But you shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their idol poles: ¹⁴ For you shall worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: ¹⁵ Lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go play the harlot after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call you, and you eat of his sacrifice; ¹⁶ And you take of their daughters unto your sons, and their daughters go play the harlot after their gods, and make your sons go play the harlot after their gods.

² And when the LORD your God shall deliver them over to you; you shall strike them, and utterly destroy them; you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them: ³ Neither shall you make marriages with them; your daughter you shall not give unto his son, nor his daughter shall you take unto your son.

³⁰ And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If you shall without fail deliver the children of Ammon into my hands, ³¹ Then it shall be, that whatsoever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

¹ Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpah.

⁸ And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.

¹⁰ And we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to bring food for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the abomination that they have done in Israel.

⁵ And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death.

⁷ What shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters as wives?

¹⁸ However we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that gives a wife to Benjamin.

²⁴ And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had lain an oath on the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eats any food until evening, that I may be avenged on my enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.

²⁸ Then answered one of the people, and said, your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eats any food this day. And the people were faint. ²⁹ Then said Jonathan, My father has troubled the land: see, I ask you, how my eyes have been brightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

² Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter anything before God: for God is in heaven, and you upon earth: therefore let your words be few.

² And you shall swear, The LORD lives, in truth, in justice, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

²³ And he swore unto her, Whatsoever you shall ask of me, I will give it to you, unto the half of my kingdom.

¹² And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

³⁸ And Esau said unto his father, Have you but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.

¹ And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of meeting there. And the land was subdued before them.

⁴ And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spoke these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

¹⁸ And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Who of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.

²³ (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)

²⁶ Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

¹² And they found among the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

⁴ Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.

²⁴ Even all nations shall say, Why has the LORD done thus unto this land? what does the heat of this great anger mean?

⁷ And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, why have you at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelled on the other side of Jordan! ⁸ O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turns their backs before their enemies! ⁹ For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall surround us, and cut off our name from the earth: and what will you do for your great name?

¹ [A maschil of Asaph.] O God, why have you cast us off forever? why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture?

¹² Why have you then broken down its hedges, so that all they who pass by the way do pluck its fruit?

³ The foolishness of man perverts his way: and his heart frets against the LORD.

¹⁷ O LORD, why have you made us to err from your ways, and hardened our heart from your fear? Return for your servants' sake, the tribes of your inheritance.

¹ Righteous are you, O LORD, when I plead with you: yet let me talk with you of your judgments: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? why are all they happy that deal very treacherously?

²⁴ An altar of earth you shall make for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings, and your peace offerings, your sheep, and your oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto you, and I will bless you. ²⁵ And if you will make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone: for if you lift up your tool upon it, you have polluted it.

²⁶ And build an altar unto the LORD your God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the idol pole which you shall cut down.

¹⁸ And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, erect an altar unto the LORD in the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

²⁵ And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD heeded supplications for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

⁶⁴ The same day did the king hallow the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD: for there he offered burnt offerings, and grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings: because the brass altar that was before the LORD was too little to receive the burnt offerings, and grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings.

³⁴ When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and inquired early after God. ³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

¹⁵ I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

¹⁰ We have an altar, of which they have no right to eat who serve the tabernacle.

²⁸ Nevertheless no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the LORD of all that he has, both of man and animal, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto the LORD. ²⁹ No one devoted to destruction, who shall be devoted among men, shall be redeemed; but shall surely be put to death.

²³ Curse you Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, Curse you bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.

⁷ And he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever comes not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

¹⁰ Cursed is he that does the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed is he that keeps back his sword from blood.

³⁵ And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! you have brought me very low, and you are one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

¹⁵ And the people grieved for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

²⁶ Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour forever? know you not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, before you bid the people return from following their brethren?

⁸ How shall I give you up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver you, Israel? how shall I make you as Admah? how shall I set you as Zeboiim? my heart is turned within me, my compassion is stirred.

⁴¹ And when he came near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, ⁴² Saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong unto your peace! but now they are hid from your eyes.

⁴⁵ And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he has worked with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, so that he died not.

¹ Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you. ² And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel. ³ And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the territory of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to you.

¹¹ And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul; ¹² All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there. ¹³ And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

⁵ And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be you of the LORD, that you have shown this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him. ⁶ And now the LORD show kindness and truth unto you: and I also will repay you this kindness, because you have done this thing.

¹⁵ You shall surely strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is in it, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.

²⁴ And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his donkeys, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

³ Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.

¹⁷ Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that has known man by lying with him. ¹⁸ But all the young girls, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

³⁴ And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:

⁶⁰ So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

¹² But go you now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.

¹⁰ When you come near unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

³² And Lebaoth, and Shilhim, and Ain, and Rimmon: all the cities are twenty and nine, with their villages:

⁴⁷ But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.

¹⁹ I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, says the LORD; and I will heal him.

⁵ And into whatsoever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house.

¹⁷ And came and preached peace to you who were afar off, and to them that were near.

² Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

⁶ And the children of Israel grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

¹⁷ And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.

¹¹ And David was displeased, because the LORD had broken forth upon Uzzah: therefore that place is called Perez-uzza to this day.

¹³ For because you did it not at the first, the LORD our God broke forth upon us, for we sought him not about the proper order.

¹³ Therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall, a bulge in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant.

¹² And they from among you shall build the old waste places: you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of streets to dwell in.

⁵⁵ Nevertheless the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit.

⁷ So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel move from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep to himself the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

¹⁴ Three times you shall keep a feast unto me in the year. ¹⁵ You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread: (you shall eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded you, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it you came out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:) ¹⁶ And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of your labors, which you have sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when you have gathered in your labors out of the field.

² Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.

⁴ These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which you shall proclaim in their appointed times.

⁶ And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days you must eat unleavened bread.

¹⁰ Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When you are come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest unto the priest:

³⁴ Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.

¹⁰ Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, you shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God.

¹⁶ And on the fourteenth day of the first month is the passover of the LORD.

²⁶ Also on the day of the first fruits, when you bring a new grain offering unto the LORD, at your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no regular work:

¹² And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no regular work, and you shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days:

¹ Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the LORD your God: for in the month of Abib the LORD your God brought you forth out of Egypt by night.

¹⁰ And you shall keep the feast of weeks unto the LORD your God with a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give unto the LORD your God, according as the LORD your God has blessed you:

¹³ You shall observe the feast of tabernacles seven days, after that you have gathered in your grain and your wine:

³¹ And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

³ And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

³ Blow the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

¹ After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

² Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.

²⁰ And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

³⁴ And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

⁶ And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with timbrels, with joy, and with instruments of music.

¹⁴ And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod.

²¹ And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, who chose me before your father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I make merry before the LORD.

³ Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.

⁴ Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and pipes.

⁴ A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

¹³ Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

¹⁷ But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

²⁵ It is a snare to the man to declare something is holy, and afterward to reconsider his vows.

⁶ But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. ⁷ For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife; ⁸ And they two shall be one flesh: so then they are no more two, but one flesh.

⁹ Yet for love's sake I rather beseech you, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. ¹⁰ I beseech you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: ¹¹ Who in time past was to you unprofitable, but now profitable to you and to me: ¹² Whom I have sent again: you therefore receive him, that is, my own heart:

⁴⁸ And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and struck them with the edge of the sword, the men of every city, as also the beasts, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.

⁸ You shall not do according to all the things that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes.

⁶ In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

¹ In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought themselves an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

⁷ Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were there, how they dwelt safely, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might shame them in anything; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.

¹ And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.

⁴ Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

⁵ Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding.

¹² There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in your youth; and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes: but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.
