¹ In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ² And saying, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ³ For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying, {} The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. ⁴ And the same John had his clothing of camel's hair, and a leather belt about his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan, ⁶ And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. ⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits befitting for repentance: ⁹ And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ¹⁰ And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. ¹¹ I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire: ¹² Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. ¹³ Then came Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized by him. ¹⁴ But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized by you, and come you to me? ¹⁵ And Jesus answering said unto him, Permit it to be so now: for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he permitted him. ¹⁶ And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up immediately out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: ¹⁷ And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

¹⁰ And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spoke this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

⁶¹ In the wilderness, Betharabah, Middin, and Secacah, ⁶² And Nibshan, and the city of Salt, and Engedi; six cities with their villages.

¹⁶ And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lies to the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

³ The voice of him that cries in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. ⁴ Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places smooth: ⁵ And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it. ⁶ The voice said, } Cry. { And he said, What shall I cry? {} All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is as the flower of the field:

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits befitting for repentance:

⁷ And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went you out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

¹¹ Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

² And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him. ³ For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. ⁴ For John said unto him, It is not lawful for you to have her. ⁵ And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. ⁶ But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. ⁷ So that he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. ⁸ And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John the Baptist's head on a platter. ⁹ And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them who sat with him to eat, he commanded it to be given her. ¹⁰ And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. ¹¹ And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the girl: and she brought it to her mother. ¹² And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. ¹³ When Jesus heard of it, he departed from there by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. ¹⁴ And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

¹⁴ And they said, Some say that you are John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.

¹² But I say unto you, That Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they desired. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. ¹³ Then the disciples understood that he spoke unto them of John the Baptist.

²⁵ The baptism of John, from where was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did you not then believe him? ²⁶ But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. ²⁷ And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

³² For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and you believed him not: but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him: and you, when you had seen it, repented not afterward, that you might believe him.

¹⁶ But when Herod heard of it, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. ¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. ¹⁸ For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife. ¹⁹ Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: ²⁰ For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and holy, and protected him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. ²¹ And when an opportune day was come, Herod on his birthday made a supper for his lords, high captains, and chief men of Galilee; ²² And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the girl, Ask of me whatsoever you will, and I will give it to you. ²³ And he swore unto her, Whatsoever you shall ask of me, I will give it to you, unto the half of my kingdom. ²⁴ And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. ²⁵ And she came in immediately with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that you give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist. ²⁶ And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes who sat with him, he would not reject her. ²⁷ And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, ²⁸ And brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl: and the girl gave it to her mother. ²⁹ And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

¹³ But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zachariah: for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. ¹⁴ And you shall have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. ¹⁵ For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. ¹⁶ And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

⁷⁶ And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Highest: for you shall go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

¹ Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, ² Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zachariah in the wilderness. ³ And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; ⁴ As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. ⁵ Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; ⁶ And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. ⁷ Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ⁹ And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which brings not forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. ¹² Then came also tax collectors to be baptized, and said unto him, Teacher, what shall we do? ¹³ And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. ¹⁴ And the soldiers likewise asked of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages. ¹⁵ And as the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether he was the Christ, or not; ¹⁶ John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I comes, the thong of whose shoes I am not worthy to untie: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire: ¹⁷ Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. ¹⁸ And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. ¹⁹ But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, ²⁰ Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

²⁴ And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went you out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. ⁷ The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. ⁸ He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

¹⁵ John bore witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spoke, He that comes after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. ¹⁶ And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace. ¹⁷ For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. ¹⁸ No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him. ¹⁹ And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? ²⁰ And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. ²¹ And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you that prophet? And he answered, No. ²² Then said they unto him, Who are you? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What say you of yourself? ²³ He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah. ²⁴ And they who were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptize you then, if you are not that Christ, nor Elijah, neither that prophet? ²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there stands one among you, whom you know not; ²⁷ He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's thong I am not worthy to unloose. ²⁸ These things were done in Bethany beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is preferred before me: for he was before me. ³¹ And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. ³² And John bore record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. ³³ And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I saw, and bore record that this is the Son of God. ³⁵ Again the next day John stood, and two of his disciples; ³⁶ And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God!

²⁷ John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. ²⁸ You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. ²⁹ He that has the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. ³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease. ³¹ He that comes from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaks of the earth: he that comes from heaven is above all. ³² And what he has seen and heard, that he testifies; and no man receives his testimony. ³³ He that has received his testimony has set his seal to this that God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God: for God gives not the Spirit by measure unto him. ³⁵ The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He that believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.

²² Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

²⁴ When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. ²⁵ And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think you that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there comes one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

³ And he said unto them, Unto what then were you baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. ⁴ Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

⁴⁷ Yet if they shall come to themselves in the land where they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto you in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;

⁶ Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

³⁰ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, says the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. ³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, by which you have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, O house of Israel? ³² For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dies, says the Lord GOD: therefore turn yourselves, and live.

¹¹ Say unto them, As I live, says the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn you, turn you from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel?

⁴⁴ And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.

¹⁷ From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

³ Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

¹⁰ Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

¹⁹ Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

¹⁰ Your kingdom come. Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

³³ But seek you first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

⁷ And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

¹¹ Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.

²⁰ Then began he to upbraid the cities in which most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

⁴¹ The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here.

¹¹ He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

²⁴ Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man who sowed good seed in his field:

³¹ Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:

³³ Another parable spoke he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; which when a man has found, he hides, and for joy thereof goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field. ⁴⁵ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking fine pearls:

⁴⁷ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind:

⁵² Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe who is instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.

¹ At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? ² And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, ³ And said, Verily I say unto you, Except you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

²³ Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, who would take account of his servants.

¹ For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.

²⁹ He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. ³⁰ And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They said unto him, The first. Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. ³² For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and you believed him not: but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him: and you, when you had seen it, repented not afterward, that you might believe him.

² The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, who made a marriage for his son,

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for you neither go in yourselves, neither allow you them that are entering to go in.

¹ Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

¹⁴ For the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.

⁴ John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

¹² And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

²⁰ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be you poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

² And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

⁹ And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come near unto you. ¹⁰ But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, ¹¹ Even the very dust of your city, which cleaves on us, we do wipe off against you: nevertheless be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near unto you.

²⁰ But if I with the finger of God cast out demons, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

³ I tell you, Nay: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.

⁷ I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety and nine just persons, who need no repentance.

¹⁰ Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents.

³⁰ And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

³¹ So likewise you, when you see these things come to pass, know that the kingdom of God is near at hand.

⁴⁷ And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

³ Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. ⁴ Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? ⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

³⁸ Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹ Repent therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

¹⁸ When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then has God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

³⁰ And the times of this ignorance God overlooked; but now commands all men everywhere to repent:

²¹ Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

²⁰ But showed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation not to be regretted: but the sorrow of the world works death.

¹³ Who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

²⁵ In meekness instructing those that oppose them; if God perhaps will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

¹ Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto maturity; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

⁹ The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

⁵ Remember therefore from where you are fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto you quickly, and will remove your lampstand out of its place, except you repent.

²¹ And I gave her time to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

¹ Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom you delight in: behold, he shall come, says the LORD of hosts.

²⁵ And all they of the land came to a forest; and there was honey upon the ground. ²⁶ And when the people were come into the forest, behold, the honey dripped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath. ²⁷ But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: therefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were brightened.

⁸ And they answered him, He was a hairy man, and wearing a belt of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.

⁴ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he has prophesied; neither shall they wear a robe of coarse hair to deceive:

⁵ Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

⁸ But what went you out to see? A man clothed in soft clothes? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.

¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon.

⁶ And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a belt of a skin about his waist; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

³ And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and three score days, clothed in sackcloth.

²⁵ And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

⁷ And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went you out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? ⁸ But what went you out to see? A man clothed in soft clothes? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. ⁹ But what went you out to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.

⁵ And there went out unto him all the land of Judea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁷ Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

¹⁶ The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presses into it.

²³ And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

³⁵ He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

²¹ And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a suitable man into the wilderness:

⁴⁰ If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;

⁷ Then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall make restitution for his trespass with the principal thereof, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him against whom he has trespassed.

¹⁹ And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray you, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what you have done; hide it not from me.

²⁷ He looks upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; ²⁸ He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

⁵ I acknowledged my sin unto you, and my iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

¹³ He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whosoever confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.

²⁵ Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

⁴ And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and awesome God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;

¹¹ I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire:

¹³ Then came Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized by him. ¹⁴ But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized by you, and come you to me? ¹⁵ And Jesus answering said unto him, Permit it to be so now: for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he permitted him. ¹⁶ And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up immediately out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

⁸ I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit. ⁹ And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

¹⁶ John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I comes, the thong of whose shoes I am not worthy to untie: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire:

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you, ¹⁹ And am no more worthy to be called your son: make me as one of your hired servants. ²⁰ And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. ²¹ And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight, and am no more worthy to be called your son.

²⁵ And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptize you then, if you are not that Christ, nor Elijah, neither that prophet? ²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there stands one among you, whom you know not; ²⁷ He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's thong I am not worthy to unloose. ²⁸ These things were done in Bethany beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

³¹ And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. ³² And John bore record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. ³³ And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

²³ And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. ²⁴ For John was not yet cast into prison. ²⁵ Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.

⁵ For John truly baptized with water; but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

³⁸ Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹ For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. ⁴⁰ And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. ⁴¹ Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

³⁶ The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) ³⁷ That word, I say, you know, which was published throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; ³⁸ How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

¹⁶ Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

⁴ Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. ⁵ When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

¹⁸ And many that believed came, and confessed, and told of their deeds.

¹⁶ And now why do you tarry? arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

² And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

¹² Buried with him in baptism, in which also you are risen with him through the faith of the working of God, who has raised him from the dead.

⁵ Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit; ⁶ Whom he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior;

² Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

¹⁰ Which stood only in foods and drinks, and various washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

¹⁶ Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

²¹ The like figure unto which even baptism does also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

¹⁵ And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

³ The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies. ⁴ Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stops its ear; ⁵ Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming ever so wisely. ⁶ Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD.

³ But draw near here, you sons of the sorceress, the descendants of the adulterer and the harlot. ⁴ Against whom do you make sport? against whom do you open your mouth wide, and stick out the tongue? are you not children of transgression, offspring of falsehood,

⁵ They hatch viper’s eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eats of their eggs dies, and from that which is crushed a viper breaks out.

¹⁰ To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.

⁶ Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD’S vengeance; he will render unto her a recompense.

¹⁸ When I say unto the wicked, You shall surely die; and you give him not warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at your hand. ¹⁹ Yet if you warn the wicked, and he turns not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul. ²⁰ Again, When a righteous man turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because you have not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at your hand. ²¹ Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man, that the righteous sins not, and he does not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also you have delivered your soul.

³ If when he sees the sword come upon the land, he blows the trumpet, and warns the people; ⁴ Then whosoever hears the sound of the trumpet, and takes not warning; if the sword comes, and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. ⁵ He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that takes warning shall deliver his soul. ⁶ But if the watchman sees the sword come, and blows not the trumpet, and the people are not warned; if the sword comes, and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand. ⁷ So you, O son of man, I have set you a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.

²⁰ For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

²⁴ But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow does not cast out demons, but by Beelzebub the prince of the demons.

³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

¹² Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Know you that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

⁶ Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

¹¹ How is it that you do not understand that I spoke not to you concerning bread, that you should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? ¹² Then understood they that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

¹⁵ Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

²³ The same day came to him the Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

³⁴ But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for you neither go in yourselves, neither allow you them that are entering to go in. ¹⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayer: therefore you shall receive the greater condemnation. ¹⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you travel on sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, you make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. ¹⁶ Woe unto you, you blind guides, who say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is bound! ¹⁷ You fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold? ¹⁸ And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is bound. ¹⁹ You fools and blind: for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift? ²⁰ Whoever therefore shall swear by the altar, swears by it, and by all things thereon. ²¹ And whoever shall swear by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells therein. ²² And he that shall swear by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits thereon. ²³ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faith: these ought you to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. ²⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. ²⁶ You blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. ²⁷ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like unto whitewashed sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. ²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

³³ You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape the judgment of hell?

³ For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands often, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. ⁴ And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, bronze vessels, and of tables. ⁵ Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not your disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?

¹⁵ And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

¹³ And they sent unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words.

¹⁸ Then came unto him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

⁷ Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ⁹ And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which brings not forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now do you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. ⁴⁰ You fools, did not he that made that which is outside make that which is within also? ⁴¹ But rather give alms of such things as you have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. ⁴² But woe unto you, Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over justice and the love of God: these ought you to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ⁴³ Woe unto you, Pharisees! for you love the best seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. ⁴⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are as graves which are not seen, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

¹⁴ And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.

²⁴ And they who were sent were of the Pharisees.

⁴⁵ Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have you not brought him? ⁴⁶ The officers answered, Never man spoke like this man. ⁴⁷ Then answered them the Pharisees, Are you also deceived? ⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? ⁴⁹ But this people who know not the law are cursed.

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

¹ And as they spoke unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, ² Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

¹⁷ Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,

⁵ But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying, It is needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

³¹ Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn everyone night and day with tears.

⁶ But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. ⁷ And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided. ⁸ For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. ⁹ And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' party arose, and contended, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

⁵ Who knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most strict sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

¹⁸ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

⁹ Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

¹⁰ And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, who delivered us from the wrath to come.

⁹ Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; ¹⁰ When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

¹⁸ That by two immutable things, in that it was impossible for God to lie, we might have strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

⁷ By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved by fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

¹⁰ In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loves not his brother.

¹⁶ And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: ¹⁷ For the great day of his wrath has come; and who shall be able to stand?

⁹ And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, who deceives the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. ¹⁰ And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accused them before our God day and night.

¹⁶ Wash you, make yourself clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ Learn to do good; seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

³ Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. ⁴ Trust you not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these. ⁵ For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if you thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbor; ⁶ If you oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: ⁷ Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, forever and ever.

¹³ Therefore now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD will relent concerning the evil that he has pronounced against you.

³ It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.

²⁸ But what think you? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work today in my vineyard. ²⁹ He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. ³⁰ And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

¹⁰ And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. ¹² Then came also tax collectors to be baptized, and said unto him, Teacher, what shall we do? ¹³ And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. ¹⁴ And the soldiers likewise asked of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

⁴ Or despise you the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? ⁵ But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart treasure up unto yourself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; ⁶ Who will render to every man according to his deeds: ⁷ To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life:

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation not to be regretted: but the sorrow of the world works death. ¹¹ For behold this same thing, that you sorrowed after a godly sort, what earnestness it worked in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what full punishment! In all things you have proved yourselves to be pure in this matter.

²² But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, ²³ Meekness, self-control: against such there is no law.

⁹ (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

¹¹ Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

⁴ By which are given unto us exceedingly great and precious promises: that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. ⁵ And for this reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; ⁶ And to knowledge self control; and to self control patience; and to patience godliness; ⁷ And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love. ⁸ For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

²⁴ Son of man, they that inhabit those waste places of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for an inheritance.

¹¹ And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. ¹² But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

²² But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, Why reason you in your hearts?

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had bidden him saw it, he spoke within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that touches him: for she is a sinner.

¹⁷ And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room to store my crops?

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

⁴⁰ And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

³³ They answered him, We are Abraham's descendants, and were never in bondage to any man: how say you, You shall be made free?

³⁹ They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said unto them, If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. ⁴⁰ But now you seek to kill me, a man that has told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

⁵³ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom make you yourself?

²⁶ Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you fears God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.

¹⁴ Simeon has declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

¹ What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, has found?

¹¹ And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: ¹² And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. ¹³ For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his descendants, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. ¹⁴ For if they who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: ¹⁵ Because the law works wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. ¹⁶ Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the descendants; not to those only who are of the law, but to those also who are of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, ¹⁷ (As it is written, I have made you a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead, and calls those things which are not as though they were.

⁷ Neither, because they are the descendants of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall your descendants be called. ⁸ That is, They who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the descendants.

²⁷ But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; ²⁸ And base things of the world, and things which are despised, has God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nothing things that are:

²⁷ For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ²⁸ There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus. ²⁹ And if you are Christ's, then are you Abraham's descendants, and heirs according to the promise.

²² For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a free woman. ²³ But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the free woman was by promise. ²⁴ Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from mount Sinai, which brings forth to bondage, which is Hagar. ²⁵ For this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. ²⁶ But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. ²⁷ For it is written, Rejoice, you barren that bear not; break forth and cry, you that travail not: for the desolate has many more children than she who has a husband. ²⁸ Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. ²⁹ But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. ³⁰ Nevertheless what says the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman. ³¹ So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

¹² That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: ¹³ But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near by the blood of Christ.

³ And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper.

¹⁵ And the vineyard which your right hand has planted, and the branch that you made strong for yourself. ¹⁶ It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of your countenance.

¹³ Those that are planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. ¹⁴ They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be healthy and flourishing;

² And he dug it, and gathered out its stones, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress in it: and he expected that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. ³ And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, between me and my vineyard. ⁴ What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? why, when I expected that it should bring forth grapes, it brought forth wild grapes? ⁵ And now; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be eaten up; and break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down: ⁶ And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor dug; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. ⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for justice, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

¹¹ When its boughs are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will show them no favor.

³ To provide for them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

⁸ For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreads out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when the heat comes, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be anxious in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

² Son of man, How is the wood of the vine tree better than any tree, or than a branch which is among the trees of the forest? ³ Shall wood be taken of it to do any work? or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel on? ⁴ Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devours both the ends of it, and the middle of it is burned. Is it fit for any work? ⁵ Behold, when it was whole, it was fit for no work: how much less shall it be fit yet for any work, when the fire has devoured it, and it is burned? ⁶ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ⁷ And I will set my face against them; they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and you shall know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.

¹ Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom you delight in: behold, he shall come, says the LORD of hosts. ² But who may endure the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appears? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: ³ And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

¹ For, behold, the day comes, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that comes shall burn them up, says the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

¹⁹ Every tree that brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

¹⁹ And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on you again forever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

⁹ And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which brings not forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.

⁶ He spoke also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. ⁷ Then said he unto the vinedresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbers it the ground? ⁸ And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and fertilize it: ⁹ And if it bears fruit, well: and if not, then after that you shall cut it down.

³¹ For if they do these things with a green tree, what shall be done with the dry?

² Every branch in me that bears not fruit he takes away: and every branch that bears fruit, he prunes it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

⁶ If a man abides not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

¹ Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; ² Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. ³ For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, because he who has built the house has more honor than the house.

⁸ But that which bears thorns and briars is worthless, and is near unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

²⁸ He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much worse punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and has done insult unto the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know him that has said, Vengeance belongs unto me, I will recompense, says the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

²⁵ See that you refuse not him that speaks. For if they escaped not who refused him that spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from heaven:

¹⁷ For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begins with us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? ¹⁸ And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

⁴ When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from its midst by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.

³ For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon your descendants, and my blessing upon your offspring:

²⁰ And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, says the LORD. ²¹ As for me, this is my covenant with them, says the LORD; My spirit that is upon you, and my words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your descendants, nor out of the mouth of your descendant's descendants, says the LORD, from this time forth and forever.

⁹ And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them as gold is tested: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, They are my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

⁶ And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

³ And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

⁶ Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not yourself: for I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof: ⁷ Therefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto you: but say a word, and my servant shall be healed.

¹⁵ John bore witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spoke, He that comes after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there stands one among you, whom you know not; ²⁷ He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's thong I am not worthy to unloose.

³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is preferred before me: for he was before me.

³³ And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I saw, and bore record that this is the Son of God.

²³ And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. ²⁴ For John was not yet cast into prison. ²⁵ Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying. ²⁶ And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bear witness, behold, the same baptizes, and all men come to him.

² And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. ³ And there appeared unto them separated tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. ⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

¹⁵ And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the beginning. ¹⁶ Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

⁴ Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

¹³ For by one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

²⁷ For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ²⁸ There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

⁸ Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

⁵ Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit;

⁵ Likewise, you younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.

¹⁸ They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carries away.

⁴ The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

⁵ Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the LORD chase them.

³¹ And the strong shall be as tinder, and the work of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them .

²⁴ Therefore as the fire devours the stubble, and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

¹³ The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.

²⁴ The oxen likewise and the young donkeys that work the ground shall eat salted provender, which has been winnowed with the shovel and with the fork.

¹⁶ You shall fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and you shall rejoice in the LORD, and shall glory in the Holy One of Israel.

²⁴ And they shall go forth, and look upon the corpses of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorrence unto all flesh.

¹¹ At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places blows in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,

²⁰ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; Behold, my anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.

⁷ And I will fan them with a fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children, I will destroy my people, since they return not from their ways.

²⁷ But if you will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

² And will send unto Babylon winnowers, that shall winnow her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.

⁴⁷ And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus says the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour every green tree in you, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned in it. ⁴⁸ And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it: it shall not be quenched.

³ Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passes away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

⁹ For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like grain is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.

³⁰ Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather you together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

⁴¹ The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;

⁴³ Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who has ears to hear, let him hear.

⁴⁹ So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, ⁵⁰ And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

⁴³ And if your hand offend you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: ⁴⁴ Where the worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁵ And if your foot offends you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter lame into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: ⁴⁶ Where the worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁷ And if your eye offend you, pluck it out: it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: ⁴⁸ Where the worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched.

¹⁷ Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

²² But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there: and, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the district of Galilee:

⁹ And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. ¹⁰ And immediately coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: ¹¹ And there came a voice from heaven, saying, You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

²¹ Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that when Jesus also was baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, ²² And the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.

³² And John bore record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

⁴³ And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

¹⁶ And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace.

³ Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. ⁴ Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? ⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷ Marvel not that I said unto you, You must be born again.

⁶ Then came he to Simon Peter: and Peter said unto him, Lord, do you wash my feet? ⁷ Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter. ⁸ Peter said unto him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you have no part with me.

⁵ For John truly baptized with water; but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. ⁶ When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, will you at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? ⁷ And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in his own power. ⁸ But you shall receive power, after the Holy Spirit has come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

²³ For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

²⁵ Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

²² But the scripture has consigned all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

⁶ And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

³ Among whom also we all had our behavior in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. ⁴ But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, ⁵ Even when we were dead in sins, has made us alive together with Christ, (by grace you are saved;)

⁹ After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and tribes, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; ¹⁰ And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God who sits upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. ¹¹ And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four living creatures, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshiped God, ¹² Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God forever and ever. Amen. ¹³ And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, Who are these who are arrayed in white robes? and from where did they come? ¹⁴ And I said unto him, Sir, you know. And he said to me, These are they who came out of the great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. ¹⁵ Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sits on the throne shall dwell among them. ¹⁶ They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun strike them, nor any heat. ¹⁷ For the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

⁷ Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, ⁸ I delight to do your will, O my God: yea, your law is within my heart.

²¹ The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honorable.

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

³⁴ Jesus said unto them, My food is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

²⁹ And he that sent me is with me: the Father has not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

⁷ Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter. ⁸ Peter said unto him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you have no part with me. ⁹ Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

¹⁰ If you keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

⁷ But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: ⁸ And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

²⁶ For such a high priest was befitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

²¹ For even to this were you called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow his steps: ²² Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: ²³ Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judges righteously: ²⁴ Who his own self bore our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes you were healed.

⁶ He that says he abides in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

² And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

¹ Behold my servant, whom I uphold; my elect, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth justice to the Gentiles.

²¹ As for me, this is my covenant with them, says the LORD; My spirit that is upon you, and my words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your descendants, nor out of the mouth of your descendant's descendants, says the LORD, from this time forth and forever.

¹ The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD has anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

¹ Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.

¹⁰ And immediately coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

³¹ And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

³⁴ For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God: for God gives not the Spirit by measure unto him.

⁵⁶ And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

¹⁸ And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. ¹⁹ For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell;

⁷ I will declare the decree: the LORD has said unto me, You are my Son; this day have I begotten you.

¹⁸ Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show justice to the Gentiles.

⁵ While he yet spoke, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear you him.

⁷ And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

²² And the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.

³⁵ And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

³⁷ And the Father himself, who has sent me, has borne witness of me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.

²⁸ Father, glorify your name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. ²⁹ The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spoke to him. ³⁰ Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

⁶ To the praise of the glory of his grace, in which he has made us accepted in the beloved.

¹⁷ For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

² And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:
