¹ [A song of ascents.] In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me. ² Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. ³ What shall be given unto you? or what shall be done unto you, you false tongue? ⁴ Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper. ⁵ Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! ⁶ My soul has long dwelt with him that hates peace. ⁷ I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.

¹³ And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,

²³ I will heap evils upon them; I will spend my arrows upon them. ²⁴ They shall be wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of animals upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, You son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and unto the shame of your mother's nakedness? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the ground, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Therefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. ³² And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Why shall he be slain? what has he done? ³³ And Saul cast a javelin at him to strike him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

⁹ And David said to Saul, Why hear you men's words, saying, Behold, David seeks your hurt? ¹⁰ Behold, this day your eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered you today into my hand in the cave: and some bade me kill you: but my eye spared you; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed. ¹¹ Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of your robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and killed you not, know you and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you; yet you hunt my soul to take it.

¹ And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented over him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

² Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. ³ And Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is opposite Jeshimon, by the road. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness. ⁴ David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come indeed.

¹⁹ I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: you seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why will you swallow up the inheritance of the LORD?

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has gained, when God takes away his soul?

¹³ He has also prepared for himself the instruments of death; he makes ready his arrows against the persecutors.

⁶ In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

⁷ LORD, by your favor you have made my mountain to stand strong: you did hide your face, and I was troubled. ⁸ I cried to you, O LORD; and unto the LORD I made supplication.

¹⁴ Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

¹¹ False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.

²⁰ For they speak not peace: but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land.

⁵ Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; by which the people fall under you.

¹⁵ And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.

² Your tongue devises evil; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ You love evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. ⁴ You love all devouring words, O you deceitful tongue. ⁵ God shall likewise destroy you forever, he shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

²⁰ He has put forth his hands against such as were at peace with him: he has broken his covenant.

⁴ My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁷ Behold, they bellow out with their mouths: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, does hear?

² Hide not your face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline your ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.

¹³ Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] Hold not your peace, O God of my praise; ² For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.

⁴ For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.

³ The sorrows of death surrounded me, and the pangs of sheol got hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. ⁴ Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech you, deliver my soul.

⁵ I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a broad place.

⁹ As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them. ¹⁰ Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again. ¹¹ Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

⁹ A hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

¹² He that is void of wisdom despises his neighbor: but a man of understanding holds his peace.

¹⁸ The wicked works a deceitful work: but to him that sows righteousness shall be a sure reward.

²² Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

²⁷ An ungodly man digs up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.

⁸ The words of a talebearer are like tasty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the body.

²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

³ And they said unto him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children have come to birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. ⁴ It may be the LORD your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD your God has heard: therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.

¹⁴ And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. ¹⁵ And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying, ¹⁶ O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwells between the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: you have made heaven and earth. ¹⁷ Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God. ¹⁸ Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries. ¹⁹ And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. ²⁰ Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are the LORD, even you only.

² Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, ³ And said, Remember now, O LORD, I beseech you, how I have walked before you in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in your sight. And Hezekiah wept bitterly. ⁴ Then came the word of the LORD to Isaiah, saying, ⁵ Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father, I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears: behold, I will add unto your days fifteen years.

⁶ The multitude of camels shall cover your land, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall show forth the praises of the LORD. ⁷ All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto you, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto you: they shall come up with acceptance on my altar, and I will glorify the house of my glory.

² Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place for wayfaring men; that I might leave my people and go from them! For they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men. ³ And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, says the LORD.

⁶ Your habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, says the LORD.

¹⁰ Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent for interest, nor men have lent to me for interest; yet everyone of them does curse me.

²⁸ Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon shall strike, thus says the LORD; Arise, go up to Kedar, and plunder the men of the east. ²⁹ Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shall take to themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, Fear is on every side.

⁶ And you, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you, and you do dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.

¹³ Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were your merchants: they traded the persons of men and vessels of bronze in your market.

²¹ Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they traded with you in lambs, and rams, and goats: in these were they your merchants.

² Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, ³ And say, Thus says the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:

³⁶ And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

²⁶ For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; ⁶⁰ But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, ⁶¹ And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. ⁶² And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answer you nothing? what is it which these witness against you?

⁴⁴ And being in agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

²¹ What fruit had you then in those things of which you are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

¹⁸ If it be possible, as much as lies in you, live peaceably with all men.

¹⁴ For he is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of partition between us; ¹⁵ Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; to make in himself of two one new man, so making peace; ¹⁶ And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: ¹⁷ And came and preached peace to you who were afar off, and to them that were near.

³ For we ourselves also were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

⁷ Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

¹⁴ Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

⁵ Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind: ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

⁷ And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy behavior of the wicked: ⁸ (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

¹³ I know your works and where you dwell, even where Satan's throne is: and you hold fast my name, and have not denied my faith, even in those days when Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwells.

⁸ But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
