³ And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profits me nothing.

¹ Take heed that you do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise you have no reward of your Father who is in heaven. ² Therefore when you are doing your alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Truthfully I say unto you, They have their reward. ³ But when you are doing alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand does: ⁴ That your alms may be in secret: and your Father which sees in secret himself shall reward you openly.

²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works? ²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.

⁵ But all their works they do to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

²² Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, yet lack you one thing: sell all that you have, and distribute unto the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

²⁸ Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed you.

⁸ And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

³ And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow has cast in more than they all: ⁴ For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her poverty has cast in all the living that she had.

⁶³ It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

⁴³ For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

³⁷ Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake.

¹³ Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

¹³ Then Paul answered, What mean you to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

²⁶ Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

¹⁵ Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: ¹⁶ The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: ¹⁷ But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel. ¹⁸ What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretense, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I in it do rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.

²⁰ According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. ²¹ For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

³ Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

⁸ For bodily exercise profits little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

⁹ Be not carried about with different and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with foods, which have not profited them that have been occupied in it.

¹⁴ What does it profit, my brothers, though a man say he has faith, and have not works? can faith save him? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled; notwithstanding you give them not those things which are necessary to the body; what does it profit? ¹⁷ Even so faith, if it has not works, is dead, being alone.
