⁴⁹ But he that hears, and does not, is like a man that without a foundation built a house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

⁴³ When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. ⁴⁴ Then he says, I will return into my house from where I came out; and when he is come, he finds it empty, swept, and garnished. ⁴⁵ Then goes he, and takes with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

²⁰ But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that hears the word, and quickly with joy receives it; ²¹ yet has he not root in himself, but lasts for a while: for when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, by and by he is offended. ²² He also that received seed among the thorns is he that hears the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

²⁹ He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. ³⁰ And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.

³ All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not you after their works: for they say, and do not.

¹⁰ And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

¹⁷ And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution arises for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.

⁴⁶ And why call you me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

⁵ A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. ⁶ And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. ⁷ And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.

¹² But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. ¹³ Woe unto you, Chorazin! woe unto you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. ¹⁵ And you, Capernaum, which are exalted to heaven, shall be thrust down to hell. ¹⁶ He that hears you hears me; and he that despises you despises me; and he that despises me despises him that sent me.

² Every branch in me that bears not fruit he takes away: and every branch that bears fruit, he purges it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

²⁹ For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

¹¹ And I punished them often in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.

⁵ For this cause, when I could no longer hold back, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labor be in vain.

²⁶ For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. ²⁸ He that looked down upon Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much sorer punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and has done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

²² But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. ²³ For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: ²⁴ For he beholds himself, and goes his way, and immediately forgets what manner of man he was. ²⁵ But whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues in it, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. ²⁶ If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

¹⁷ Even so faith, if it has not works, is dead, being alone. ¹⁸ Yes, a man may say, You have faith, and I have works: show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. ¹⁹ You believe that there is one God; you are doing well: the devils also believe, and tremble. ²⁰ But will you know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? ²¹ Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? ²² See you how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? ²³ And the scripture was fulfilled which says, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. ²⁴ You see then that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. ²⁵ Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? ²⁶ For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

⁵ And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; ⁶ And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; ⁷ And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love. ⁸ For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ But he that lacks these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

²⁰ For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

³ And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. ⁴ He that says, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
