²⁵ Then* Adam knew* his wife again, and she gave birth to a son. And she called his name Seth, for she said "God has appointed to me another child in the place of Abel, because Cain killed him." ²⁶ And as for Seth, he also fathered a son, and he called his name Enosh. At that time he* began to call on the name of Yahweh.

²⁵ When* Methuselah had lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, he fathered Lamech. ²⁶ And after Methuselah had fathered Lamech, he lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and fathered sons and daughters. ²⁷ And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died. ²⁸ When* Lamech had lived one hundred and eighty-two years, he fathered a son. ²⁹ And he called his name Noah, saying, "This one _⌊shall relieve us_⌋* from our work, and from the hard labor of our hands, from the ground which Yahweh had cursed. ³⁰ And after Lamech had fathered Noah he lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and he fathered sons and daughters. ³¹ All the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died. ³² When* Noah _⌊was five hundred years old_⌋,* Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

⁵ By faith Enoch was taken up, so that he did not experience death, and he was not found, because God took him up. For before his removal, he had been approved _⌊as having been pleasing_⌋* to God.

¹⁴ And Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about* these people, saying, "Behold, the Lord came with tens of thousands of his holy ones

³² When* Noah _⌊was five hundred years old_⌋,* Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

⁸ But Noah found favor in the eyes of Yahweh. ⁹ These are the generations* of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, without defect in his generations. Noah walked with God. ¹⁰ And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

¹ Then* Yahweh said to Noah, "Go—you and all your household—into the ark, for I have seen you are righteous before me in this generation.

¹⁸ Now* the sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.)

²⁹ And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died.

⁹ "For this is like the waters of Noah to me, when I swore _⌊that the waters of Noah would never again pass_⌋* over the earth, so I swore _⌊that I would not be_⌋* angry at you and rebuke you. ¹⁰ For the mountains may depart, and the hills may sway, but* my faithfulness shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not sway," says Yahweh, who has compassion on you,

¹⁴ And if even the three of these men were in the midst of it—Noah, Daniel, and Job—they, through their righteousness, would save only _⌊themselves_⌋!"* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

³⁷ For just as the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. ³⁸ For as in the days* before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered into the ark.

³⁶ the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,

²⁶ And just as it was in the days of Noah, so also it will be in the days of the Son of Man—

⁷ By faith Noah, having been warned about things not yet seen, out of reverence constructed an ark for the deliverance of his family, by which he pronounced sentence on the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

⁵ and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a proclaimer of righteousness, _⌊and seven others_⌋* when he* brought a flood on the world of the ungodly,

¹ These are the generations* of the sons of Noah—Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Children* were born to them after the flood. ² The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. ³ And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. ⁴ And the sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. ⁵ From these the coastland peoples spread out through their lands, each according to his own language by their own families, in their nations.

¹³ Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your traders; _⌊in exchange for people_⌋* and an object of bronze they gave you your wares.

² "Son of man,* set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the head* leader of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him. ³ And you must say, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Look! I am against you, Gog, the head* leader of Meshach and Tubal,

⁶ Gomer and all of its troops, Beth Togarmah, the remote areas of the north, and with all of its troops and many peoples with them.

¹ "And you, son of man,* prophesy against Gog, and you must say, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Look! I am against you Gog, the head* leader of Meshech and Tubal,

³ And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

²⁴ The ships will come from the hand of the Kittim, and they will afflict Asshur and will afflict Eber; also he will be forever ruin."

¹⁰ Let the kings of Tarshish and the islands bring tribute. Let the kings of Sheba and Seba present gifts,

¹ The oracle of Tyre:
Wail, ships of Tarshish, for _⌊the house is destroyed so that no one can enter_⌋;* it is announced to them from the land of Cyprus.

¹² And he said,
"You will not _⌊continue_⌋* to exult, crushed one, _⌊virgin_⌋* daughter of Sidon. Arise, cross over to Cyprus! There will be no rest for you even there."

¹⁹ And I will set a sign among them, and I will send survivors from them to the nations: Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow; Tubal and Javan, the faraway coastlands that have not heard of my fame, and have not seen my glory.
And they shall declare my glory among the nations,

¹⁰ For go over to the coasts of Cyprus and look, and send to Kedar and consider very closely, and see if there has been a thing like this:

⁶ They made your oars with oaks from Bashan; your deck they made with inlaid ivory, with cypress trees from the coastlands of Cyprus.*

³⁰ And the ships of Kittim will come against him, and he will lose heart, and he will turn back, and he will be enraged _⌊against the holy covenant_⌋,* and he will take action, and he will turn back, and he will pay attention to those who forsake _⌊the holy covenant_⌋.*

⁶ And the sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. ⁷ And the sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. ⁸ And Cush fathered Nimrod. _⌊He was the first on earth to be a mighty warrior_⌋.* ⁹ He was a mighty hunter before Yahweh. Therefore it was said, "Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before Yahweh." ¹⁰ Now,* the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Akkad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. ¹¹ From that land he went out to Assyria, and he built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, ¹² Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.

⁶ And they will shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod at its entrances. And he will rescue us from the Assyrian* when he comes into our land, and when they tread upon our border.

¹³ And Egypt fathered Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, ¹⁴ Pathrusim, and Casluhim (from whom the Philistines came), and Caphtorim. ¹⁵ Canaan fathered Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth, ¹⁶ and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, ¹⁷ the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, ¹⁸ the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were spread abroad.

²³ And also the Avvites, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, and the Caphtorim, who came out from Caphtor, destroyed them and then settled in their place.

⁴ Because of the day that is coming to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and from Sidon every survivor who could help, for Yahweh is destroying the Philistines, the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.

⁷ "Are you not like the Cushites to me, O people of Israel?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt and the Philistines from Caphtor and _⌊the Arameans_⌋* from Kir?

²² And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and he told his two brothers outside.

²⁵ And he said,
"Cursed be Canaan, a slave of slaves he shall be to his brothers." ²⁶ Then* he said,
"Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Shem, and let Canaan be a slave to them.

¹⁵ Canaan fathered Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth, ¹⁶ and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, ¹⁷ the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, ¹⁸ the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were spread abroad. ¹⁹ And the territory of the Canaanites was from Sidon _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Gerar as far as Gaza, and _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

³ And Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. And Abraham rose up from his dead, and he spoke to the Hittites* and said,

⁵ And the Hittites* answered Abraham and said to him,

²⁰ And the field and the cave which was in it _⌊passed_⌋* to Abraham as _⌊a burial site_⌋* from the Hittites.*

²⁸ And I will send the hornet before you, and it will drive out the Hivites,* the Canaanites,* and the Hittites* from before you.

¹ Now* when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the Shephelah,* and on all the coast of the great sea toward Lebanon*—the Hittites,* the Amorites,* the Canaanites,* the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites*—heard of this,

⁶ So David sent to Joab, "Send Uriah the Hittite to me." So Joab sent Uriah to David.

²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."

²² And I have given to you one slope of land rather than your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorites by my sword and with my bow."

² And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites,* the Amorites,* and the Hittites* and the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites,*

¹¹ "Keep for yourself what I myself have commanded you today. Look, I am about to drive from before you the Amorites and the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Perizzites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites.*

²¹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites,* saying, ²² "Let us go through your land; we will not turn aside into a field or vineyard; we will not drink well water along the way of the king until we have gone through your territory." ²³ But Sihon did not allow Israel to go through his territory. "Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! And let the city of Sihon be established. ²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the* high places of Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, people of Chemosh. He has given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, to the king of the Amorites,* Sihon. ³⁰ We destroyed them; Heshbon has perished up to Dibon; we laid waste up to Nophah, which _⌊reaches_⌋* Medeba." ³¹ Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.* ³² Moses sent to explore Jaazer; they captured _⌊its environs_⌋* and dispossessed the Amorites* who were there.

¹ "When Yahweh your God brings you into the land that you are about to enter _⌊into it_⌋* to take possession of it, and he drives* out many nations _⌊before you_⌋,* the Hittites* and the Girgashites* and the Amorites* and the Canaanites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites,* seven nations mightier and more numerous than you,

¹⁷ Rather, you shall utterly destroy them, the Hittites* and the Amorites,* the Canaanites* and the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites,* just as Yahweh your God has commanded you,

¹⁰ Joshua said, "By this you will know that the living God is in your midst, and he will certainly drive out the Canaanites _⌊from before you_⌋,* and the Hittites, Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

¹⁵ But if it is bad in your eyes to serve Yahweh, choose for yourselves today whom you want to serve, whether it is the gods that your ancestors* served beyond the river,* or the gods of the Amorites* in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve Yahweh."

²¹ But the descendants* of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites* who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived among the descendants* of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

¹¹ They were near Jebus, and _⌊the day was far spent_⌋,* and the servant said to his master, "Please, come, let us turn aside to this city of the Jebusites,* and let us spend the night in it."

² So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not from the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* they were from the remainder of the Amorites. Now the _⌊Israelites_⌋* had sworn to them,* but Saul tried to wipe them out in his zeal for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and Judah.

¹⁶ When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, Yahweh regretted about the evil, and he said to the angel who brought destruction among the people, "Enough, now relax your hand." Now the angel of Yahweh was at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

¹¹ "Because Manasseh the king of Judah committed these detestable things and did evil more than the Amorites did who were before him and caused even Judah to sin with his idols,

⁸ You found his heart faithful before you and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite and the Girgashite—to give it to his seed. And you have kept your word because you are righteous.

⁹ Yet I destroyed the Amorite _⌊before them_⌋,* _⌊who was as tall as_⌋* cedars and was as strong as the oaks. I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.

⁷ I will remove its* blood from its* mouth, and its* abominations from between its* teeth. And it* too will be a remnant for our God; and it* will be like a tribal chief* in Judah, and Ekron will be like the Jebusite.

⁸ And I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from this land to a good and wide land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Amorites* and the Perizzites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites.*

¹⁷ And I said, "I will bring you up from the misery of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Amorites* and the Perizzites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites,* to a land flowing with milk and honey." '

⁵ And when Yahweh brings you to the land of the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Amorites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites*—which he swore to your ancestors* to give to you, a land flowing with milk and honey—you will perform this service in this month.

²⁰ All of the people who were remaining from the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites who were not of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,*

⁸ From Mount Hor you will make a boundary to reach Hamath; the limits of the territory will be at Zedad.

⁶⁵ Solomon held the festival at that time and all of Israel with him, a great assembly from Lebo Hamath up to the wadi* of Egypt before Yahweh our God, for seven days and seven days, a total of fourteen days.

"From Aram Balak lead me, from the mountains of the east the king of Moab, 'Go for me, curse Jacob, and go, denounce Israel.'

²² Nevertheless, the Kenite will be burned; how long will Asshur keep* you captive?" ²³ Again he _⌊uttered_⌋* his oracle and said,
"Woe, who will live when God establishes this?* ²⁴ The ships will come from the hand of the Kittim, and they will afflict Asshur and will afflict Eber; also he will be forever ruin."

² And they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of the _⌊families_⌋,* and they said to them, "Let us build with you. Like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him from the days of Esarhaddon the king of Assyria who brought us up here.

⁸ Assyria also has joined with them. They _⌊provide help_⌋* to the children of Lot. Selah

The Lord will again extend his hand a second time to acquire the remnant of his people that is left, from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and the coastlands of the sea,

² A hard revelation is told to me;
the treacherous deals treacherously, and the destroyer destroys. Go up, Elam; lay siege, Media!
I put an end to all of her sighing.

⁶ And Elam lifted up the quiver, with chariots* of men* and cavalry. And Kir uncovered the shield.

²⁵ and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media;

¹⁰ Persia and Lud and Put were _⌊among your soldiers_⌋;* small shield and helmet hung _⌊among you_⌋* and gave to you your adornment.

²³ Haran and Canneh and Eden, the traders of Sheba, Assyria, and Kilmad were trading with you.

²² Assyria is there and all of its assembly; all around it are its graves, all of them killed, those fallen by the sword,

²⁴ Elam is there and all of its hordes, all around its grave, all of them dead who fell by the sword, those who went down uncircumcised to the depths of the underworld,* those who spread their terror to the land of the living, and now they bear their disgrace with the people going down to the grave.*

² And I saw in the vision, _⌊and when I saw_⌋,* I was in Susa, the citadel that was in the province of Elam. And I saw in the vision, and _⌊I myself_⌋* was at the stream of Ulai.*

³ Assyria will not save us; we will not ride on horses,* and we will say no more, "Our God," to the work of our hands because in you the fatherless child finds mercy.

²⁴ And Arphaxad fathered Shelah, and Shelah fathered Eber.

¹¹ The name of the first is the Pishon. It went around all the land of Havilah, where there is gold.

²⁹ Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.

¹⁸ They settled from Havilah to Shur, which was opposite* Egypt, going toward Asshur, opposite;* he _⌊settled_⌋* opposite* all his brothers.

⁷ Then Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as one goes to Shur which is _⌊east of_⌋* Egypt.

²⁸ They went to Ophir and imported from there four hundred and twenty talents of gold, and they brought it to King Solomon.

¹¹ Moreover, the fleet of ships of Hiram which carried the gold from Ophir also brought from Ophir abundant amounts of almug wood and precious stones.

⁴ three thousand talents of gold from the gold of Ophir and seven thousand talents of refined silver to overlay the walls of the houses,

²⁴ and if you put gold ore in the dust, and the gold of Ophir in the rock of wadis,

⁹ Kings' daughters are among your noble ladies. The queen stands at your right hand in gold of Ophir.

Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran fathered Lot. ²⁸ And Haran died in the presence of Terah his father in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans. ²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. ⁴ The sharpened arrows of a warrior, with burning charcoals from broom trees.

⁵ I am black but beautiful,* _⌊O maidens of Jerusalem_⌋,* like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon.

¹⁷ And the remainder of the number of the bows* of the warriors of the sons of Kedar will be few."
For Yahweh, the God of Israel, has spoken.

⁷ All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered to you; the rams of Nebaioth shall serve you. They shall present a sacrifice for favor on my altar, and I will glorify _⌊my honorable house_⌋.*

And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim. ⁴ And the sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. All of these were the children of Keturah.

²⁸ Then Midianite traders passed by. And they* drew Joseph up and brought him up from the pit, and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph to Egypt.

¹⁵ And Pharaoh heard this matter, and he sought to kill Moses, and Moses fled from Pharaoh, and he lived in the land of Midian, and he lived at _⌊a certain well_⌋.* ¹⁶ Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.*

⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, "Now the crowd will lick up all around us, like a bull devours the grass of the field." And Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time. ⁵ He sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the river,* in the land of the children of his people, to summon him, saying, "Look! A people went out from Egypt. Look! They cover _⌊the surface of the land_⌋;* they are about to dwell opposite me. ⁶ Now, please go, curse this people for me because they* are stronger than me; perhaps I will be able to strike them* and drive them* out from the land because I know whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you cursed is cursed." ⁷ So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian went with a fee for divination in their hand; they came to Balaam and spoke the words of Balak to him.

⁶ And behold, a man from the _⌊Israelites_⌋* came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman before the eyes of Moses and before the eyes of all of the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and they were weeping at the doorway of the tent of assembly.

² "Seek vengeance for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people."

¹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and Yahweh gave them into the hand of the Midianites* for seven years. ² The hand of the Midianites* prevailed over Israel; because of the presence of the Midianites,* the _⌊Israelites_⌋* made for themselves hiding places that were in the mountains, caves, and strongholds. ³ And whenever Israel sowed seed, the Midianites,* Amalekites,* and the people of the east would come up against them. ⁴ They would camp against them and destroy the produce of the land _⌊as far as_⌋* Gaza; they left no produce in Israel, or sheep, ox, or donkey. ⁵ For they, their livestock, and their tents would come up like a great number of locusts; they and their camels could not be counted; they came into the land and devoured it. ⁶ Israel was very poor because of the presence of the Midianites,* and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh.

¹ Now the queen of Sheba had heard of the fame of Solomon regarding the name of Yahweh, and she came to test him with hard questions.

¹⁹ The caravans of Tema looked; the traveling merchants of Sheba hope for them.

¹⁵ So may he live, and may gold from Sheba be given to him, and may prayers be offered for him continually. May blessings be invoked for him _⌊all day long_⌋.*

¹³ An oracle _⌊concerning_⌋* Arabia:
You will spend the night in the thicket in a desert-plateau,* caravans of Dedanites.

⁶ A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young male camels of Midian and Ephah. All those from Sheba shall come; they shall bring gold and frankincense, and they shall proclaim the praise of Yahweh.

²³ and Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all those who are trimmed to the side;

⁸ Flee! Turn back! _⌊Get down low_⌋!* O inhabitants of Dedan. For I will bring upon him the disaster of Esau at the time when I will punish him.

¹³ therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: "so* I will stretch out my hand against Edom and I will cut off from it both human and animal, and I will make it a ruin from Teman and Dedan; they will fall by the sword.

²⁰ Dedan was trading with you, with garments of woven material for riding.

² And she conceived, and Sarah bore to Abraham a son in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him. ³ And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.

²⁴ And when her days to give birth were completed,* then—behold—twins were in her womb. ²⁵ And the first came out red, all _⌊his body_⌋* was like a hairy coat, so they called his name Esau. ²⁶ And afterward his brother came out, and his hand grasped the heel of Esau, so his name was called Jacob. And Isaac _⌊was sixty years old_⌋* at their birth. ²⁷ And the boys grew up. And Esau was a skilled* hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents. ²⁸ And Isaac loved Esau because _⌊he could eat of his game_⌋,* but Rebekah loved Jacob.

²⁸ And he said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel,* for you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed."

²⁸ The sons of Abraham: Isaac and Ishmael.

² "I have loved you," says Yahweh, but you say, "How have you loved us?" "Is Esau not Jacob's brother?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "I have loved Jacob, ³ but Esau I have hated. I have made his* mountain ranges a desolation, and given his inheritance to the jackals of the desert." ⁴ If Edom says, "We are shattered, but we will return and rebuild the ruins," Yahweh of hosts says this: "They may build, but I will tear down; and they will be called a territory of wickedness, and the people with whom Yahweh is angry forever."

² Abraham became the father of Isaac, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of Judah and his brothers,

³⁴ the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,

⁸ And he gave him the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac did so with* Jacob, and Jacob did so with* the twelve patriarchs.

¹⁰ And not only this, but also when* Rebecca conceived children by one man,* Isaac our father— ¹¹ for although they* had not yet been born, or done anything good or evil, in order that the purpose of God according to election might remain, ¹² not by works but by the one who calls—it was said to her, "The older will serve the younger,"* ¹³ just as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."*

⁴ And Adah bore to Esau Eliphaz; and Basemath bore Reuel; ⁵ and Oholibamah bore Jeush and Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.

⁹ Now these are the descendants of Esau, the father of Edom, in the hill country of Seir. ¹⁰ These are the names of the sons of Esau: Eliphaz, the son of Adah, the wife of Esau; Reuel, the son of Basemath, the wife of Esau. ¹¹ The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. ¹² (Now Timnah was the concubine of Eliphaz, the son of Esau. And she bore Amalek to Eliphaz.) These are the sons of Adah, the wife of Esau. ¹³ Now these are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These are the sons of Basemath, the wife of Esau. ¹⁴ Now these are the sons of Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, daughter of Zibeon, the wife of Esau: She bore to Esau Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. ¹⁵ These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau: the chiefs of Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz,

⁷ Concerning Edom, thus says Yahweh of hosts:
"Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel become lost from those who understand? Is their wisdom rotting?

²⁰ _⌊Therefore_⌋* hear the plan of Yahweh that he has planned against Edom, and his plans that he has planned against the inhabitants of Teman. _⌊Surely_⌋* they will drag them away, the little ones of the flock. _⌊Surely_⌋* he will cause to be desolated over them their grazing place.

¹² So I will send a fire against Teman and it will devour the citadel fortresses of Bozrah."

⁹ And your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, so that _⌊everyone_⌋* from the mountain of Esau will be cut off because of the slaughter!

³ God came from Teman; the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His splendor covers the heavens, and his praise fills the earth.

²⁰ These are the sons of Seir, the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ²¹ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. ²² And the sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam. And Lotan's sister was Timna. ²³ Now these are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. ²⁴ Now these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is Anah who found the hot springs in the desert while he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father. ²⁵ Now these are the sons of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ²⁶ Now these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. ²⁷ These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. ²⁸ These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹ These are the chiefs of the Horites: the chiefs Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ³⁰ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.

And the name of his city was Avith. ³⁶ And Hadad died, and Samlah from Masrekah reigned in his place. ³⁷ And Samlah died, and Shaul from Rehoboth on the Euphrates* reigned in his place. ³⁸ And Shaul died, and Baal-Hanan, the son of Acbor, reigned in his place. ³⁹ And Baal-Hanan the son of Acbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Pau, and the name of his wife was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab. ⁴⁰ Now these are the names of the chiefs of Esau according to their families, according to their dwelling places, by their names: the chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, ⁴¹ Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, ⁴² Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, ⁴³ Magdiel, and Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of Edom) according to their settlements in the land of their possession.

¹⁰ The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff between his feet, until Shiloh comes. And to him shall be the obedience of nations.

¹⁷ I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; a star will go out from Jacob, and a scepter will rise from Israel; it will crush the foreheads of Moab and destroy all the children of Seth. ¹⁸ Edom will be a captive; Seir, its enemies, will be a captive, and Israel will be acting _⌊courageously_⌋.* ¹⁹ Someone* from Jacob will rule and will destroy a remnant* from the city."

⁶ _⌊Yahweh has a sword_⌋;*
it is full of blood. It is covered with* fat, with* the blood of lambs and goats, with* the fat of the kidneys of rams, for _⌊Yahweh has a sacrifice_⌋* in Bozrah and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

¹ Who is this, coming from Edom, from Bozrah in bright red garments? Who is this honored in his garment, lying down in his great strength? "It is I, speaking in justice, _⌊mighty_⌋* to save!"

¹³ For I have sworn by myself," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "that Bozrah will become as a horror, as a disgrace, as a waste, and as a curse. And all her towns will be _⌊everlasting sites of ruins_⌋."*

¹² I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; I will surely gather together the remainder of Israel. I will set them like sheep of Bozrah. Like a herd in the midst of their pasture they will be in tumult from people.

¹¹ The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

¹¹ Thus* Job's three friends heard of this calamity that had come upon him. So* each set out from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. And they met* together to come to console him and to comfort him.
