⁷ They said to him, "If you will be a servant today to this people, then you will serve them; and if you answer them and speak good words to them, they will always be your servants."

³ Then Absalom would say to him, "Look, your case is good and right, but for you there is no hearing with the king." ⁴ Then Absalom would say, "_⌊Oh, that someone would_⌋* appoint me as judge in the land, that _⌊anyone_⌋* might come to me who had a legal dispute or a case, and I would give him justice." ⁵ It happened whenever anyone drew near to do obeisance to him, that he would stretch his hand and take hold of him and kiss him. ⁶ Absalom did like this to all of Israel who came to the king for judgment; so Absalom stole the hearts* of the people of Israel.

¹³ Then the king answered all the people harshly, as he had rejected the advice of the old men that they had offered.

⁶ Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the elders who had been _⌊serving_⌋* before Solomon his father when he was alive, saying, "What word do you advise to answer this people?" ⁷ And they said to him, "If you will be good to this people and please them, then speak good words to them. Then they will be your servants _⌊forever_⌋."*

⁴ If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post, for calmness can undo great offenses.

¹³ With gracious* and comforting words Yahweh answered the angel who was talking with me.

⁴³ But it is not like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, ⁴⁴ and whoever wants to be most prominent among you must be the slave of all.

⁷ but emptied himself by* taking the form of a slave, by* becoming in the likeness of people. And being found in appearance like a man, ⁸ he humbled himself by* becoming obedient to the point of death, that is, death on a cross. ⁹ Therefore also God exalted him and graciously granted him the name above every name, ¹⁰ so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and of those on earth and of those under the earth, ¹¹ and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
