¹ Now Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants about killing David, but Saul's son Jonathan _⌊liked David very much_⌋.* ² So Jonathan informed David, saying, "My father Saul is trying to kill you; now please take care! In the morning you should stay in the hiding place and conceal yourself. ³ I will go out and stand _⌊at my father's side_⌋* in the field where you are, and I will speak about you to my father; _⌊if I find out anything_⌋* I will tell it to you." ⁴ So Jonathan spoke well about David to his father Saul and said to him, "The king should not sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his service for you has been very good. ⁵ He put his life in his hand and attacked the Philistine, and Yahweh brought about a great victory for all of Israel, and you saw it and rejoiced! Now why should you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?" ⁶ And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan and swore, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* he will not be put to death!" ⁷ Jonathan called to David and told him all of these words. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul and he was before him as _⌊formerly_⌋.* ⁸ War came again, so David went out and fought against the Philistines and _⌊defeated them thoroughly_⌋* so that they fled before him. ⁹ Then the evil spirit from Yahweh came upon Saul while he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing a stringed instrument in his hand. ¹⁰ So Saul tried _⌊to pin David to the wall with the spear_⌋,* but _⌊he eluded Saul_⌋,* so that he struck the spear into the wall, and David fled and escaped that same night. ¹¹ Then Saul sent messengers to David's house to guard him and to kill him in the morning, but Michal his wife told David, saying, "If _⌊you do not save your life_⌋* tonight, then tomorrow you will be killed!" ¹² So Michal lowered David through the window, and he went and fled and escaped. ¹³ Then Michal took the household god* and put it on the bed and put a quilt of goat's hair at its head and covered it with the clothes. ¹⁴ And Saul sent messengers to arrest David, but she said, "He is ill." ¹⁵ So Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, "Bring him up to me in the bed, so that I can kill him." ¹⁶ When the messengers came, _⌊to their surprise_⌋* the idol was on the bed with the quilt of goat's hair at the head. ¹⁷ Then Saul said to Michal, "Why have you deceived me like this and sent away my enemy, so that he escaped?" Michal said to Saul, "He said to me, 'Let me go, why should I kill you?'" ¹⁸ So David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth. ¹⁹ And it was told to Saul, "David is in Naioth in Ramah." ²⁰ So Saul sent messengers to capture David. When they saw the company of the prophets prophesying and Samuel standing as chief over them, then the Spirit of God came upon Saul's messengers, and they also prophesied. ²¹ So they told Saul, and he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. Again Saul sent messengers a third time, and they also prophesied. ²² Then he also went to Ramah. When he came to the great cistern which was in Secu, he asked and said, "Where are Samuel and David?" Someone said, "Look they are in Naioth in Ramah." ²³ So he went there to Naioth in Ramah and the Spirit of God came upon him also, and _⌊he walked along prophesying_⌋* until he came to Naioth in Ramah. ²⁴ He also stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel. He lay naked all that day and all night. Therefore they say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"

⁶ "As for the one shedding the blood of humankind, by humankind his blood shall be shed, for God made humankind in his own image.

²² Then Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not say to you, do not sin against the boy? But you did not listen, and now, behold, his blood has been sought."

²⁵ If a man sins against a man, then God can intercede for him. But if a man sins against Yahweh, who can intercede for him?" But they did not _⌊obey_⌋* their father, because Yahweh wanted to kill them.

³² But Jonathan answered his father Saul and said to him, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done?"

¹⁴ But Ahimelech answered the king and said, "And who among all your servants is as faithful as David? He is the son-in-law of the king who moves quickly to safeguard you and is honored in your house.

²² "If a man sins against his neighbor and _⌊makes him swear an oath_⌋* and comes with an oath before your altar in this house,

¹² They repay me evil in place of good. It is bereavement to my soul.

⁴ In return for my love they accuse me, though I am in prayer.* ⁵ So they inflicted evil against me in return for good and hatred in return for my love.

²⁰ Should good be repaid in place of evil? Yet they have dug a pit for me. Remember my standing _⌊before you_⌋* to speak good for them, to avert your wrath from them.

¹² Now if you* sin in this way against the brothers and wound their conscience, which is weak, you sin against Christ.

¹⁵ Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that every murderer does not have eternal life residing in him.

¹³ And Moses said to the people, "You must not be afraid. Stand still and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will accomplish for you today, because the Egyptians whom you see today you will see never again.

¹⁰ Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed* in the midst of your land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance and thereby bloodguilt would be on you.* ¹¹ But if someone hates* his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises up* against him _⌊and murders him_⌋,* and the murderer flees to one of these cities, ¹² then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there, and they shall give him into the hand of the avenger of blood, and he shall be put to death. ¹³ Your eye shall not take pity on him, and you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, _⌊so that good will be directed toward you_⌋.*

¹⁷ for my father fought and _⌊risked his life_⌋* for you and delivered you from the hand of Midian;

³ I saw that you would not deliver us; _⌊I risked my own life_⌋,* and I crossed over to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and Yahweh gave them into my hand. Why have you come up to me this day to fight against me?"

¹³ But Saul said, "No one will be put to death on this day, because _⌊today_⌋* Yahweh has provided deliverance in Israel."

⁴⁵ But the army said to Saul, "Must Jonathan die, who accomplished this great victory in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, not a hair from his head will fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day." So the army ransomed Jonathan and he did not die.

⁴⁹ Then David put his hand into the bag and took a stone from it and slung it. He struck the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. ⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with the sling and with the stone, and he struck down the Philistine and killed him, but there was no sword in David's hand. ⁵¹ Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it from its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. ⁵² The men of Israel and Judah got up, raised the war cry, and pursued the Philistines _⌊as far as_⌋* the valley* and up to the gates of Ekron. So the slain of the Philistines fell on the way* to Shaaraim up to Gath and as far as Ekron. ⁵³ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* returned from pursuing the Philistines and plundered their camp.

²¹ Then the woman came to Saul and realized that he was absolutely* terrified, so she said to him, "Look, your female servant _⌊has obeyed you_⌋,* and I have _⌊risked my life_⌋.* I have listened to your words that you have spoken to me.

¹⁴ But they took their stand in the middle of the plot and defended it. And they killed the Philistines. And Yahweh saved them with a great victory.

³ Indeed, none who wait for you should be put to shame. Those who betray without cause should be put to shame.

⁴ More numerous than the hairs of my head are those hating me without a cause. Those who are destroying me—my enemies wrongfully*— are mighty. What I did not steal, I then must restore.

¹⁰⁹ My life is _⌊in danger_⌋* continually, yet I do not forget your law.

¹⁵ Only you must certainly know that if you put me to death, you will bring on yourselves innocent blood, and on this city and on its inhabitants, for _⌊truly_⌋* Yahweh sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."

⁴ saying, "I have sinned by* betraying innocent blood!" But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!"*

²⁴ So Pilate, when he* saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but instead an uproar was developing, took water and* washed his* hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this man. You see to it!"*

²⁵ But this happened* so that the word that is written in their law would be fulfilled, 'They hated me without a reason.'

²⁴ But I consider my* life as worth _⌊nothing_⌋* to myself, in order to finish my mission and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

³⁰ because on account of the work of Christ he came near to the point of death, risking his life in order that _⌊he might make up for your inability to serve me_⌋*.

³ how will we escape if we* neglect so great a salvation which had its beginning when it* was spoken through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard,

³⁹ For as Yahweh lives, who delivers Israel, I swear that even if it is in Jonathan my son, _⌊he will certainly die_⌋!"* But nobody from all the army answered him.

⁴ In his eyes a rejected one is contemptible, but he honors those who respect Yahweh. He takes an oath to his own injury and does not retract it.

²⁴ On his lips, an enemy will pretend, but _⌊inside_⌋* he will harbor deceit. ²⁵ When he makes his voice gracious, do not believe him, for seven abominations are in his heart.

² And though they say, '_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,'* _⌊therefore_⌋* they swear falsely."

² _⌊For some time now_⌋,* even when Saul was king, you were _⌊the one who led the army of Israel in battle_⌋.* And Yahweh your God said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel and will be leader over my people Israel.'"

³³ For Topheth has been prepared from yesterday; indeed, it is made ready for the king. He makes its pile of wood deep and wide; he makes fire and wood _⌊abundant_⌋.* The breath of Yahweh burns in it like a stream of sulfur.

³² The God who girded me with strength, and made safe* my way, ³³ he made my feet like the deer's, and on my high places he makes me stand. ³⁴ He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. ³⁵ You also gave me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your humility made me great. ³⁶ You enlarged my step under me, and my ankles did not slip. ³⁷ I chased my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back until they were finished off. ³⁸ I struck them and they were not able to stand up; they fell under my feet. ³⁹ And you girded me with strength for the battle; those rising against me you made to kneel under me. ⁴⁰ And you _⌊made my enemies turn their backs_⌋,* then I destroyed those who hated me. ⁴¹ They cried out but there was no rescuer, even to Yahweh, but he did not answer them. ⁴² And I ground them like dust _⌊in the wind_⌋,* I emptied them* out like mud of the streets. ⁴³ You rescued me from strife with people; you set me as head (over) nations. People I did not know served me; ⁴⁴ as soon as _⌊they heard_⌋,* they obeyed me. The children of a foreign land feigned obedience before me. ⁴⁵ The children of a foreign land _⌊lost heart_⌋,* and they came trembling from their strongholds. ⁴⁶ Yahweh lives, and blessed be my rock, and may the God of my salvation be exalted— ⁴⁷ the God who executed vengeance for me, and subdued peoples under me, ⁴⁸ who delivered me from my enemies. Indeed, you exalted me higher than those who rose against me. You delivered me from the man of violence. ⁴⁹ Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, O Yahweh, and I will sing the praise of your name: ⁵⁰ the one who makes great victories for his king, and who shows loyal love for his anointed, to David and to his descendants forever.

³ Though an army encamp against me, my heart will not fear. Though war arise against me, even in this I will remain confident.

¹⁴ Now the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul and an evil spirit from Yahweh tormented him.

¹⁶ Please, let our lord command your servants who are before you! Let them seek a man skilled in playing on the lyre. _⌊When_⌋* the evil spirit from God is upon you, he can play _⌊on it_⌋* and _⌊you will feel better_⌋."*

¹⁰ _⌊On_⌋* the next day, the evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he prophesied in the middle of the house. ³⁰ There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel to oppose Yahweh.

¹⁷ Every weapon formed against you shall not succeed, and you shall declare guilty every tongue that rises against you for judgment. This is the inheritance of the servants of Yahweh, and their _⌊legal right_⌋* from me,"

⁴ What will I do with you, O Ephraim? What will I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes away early in the morning.

²³ And whenever they persecute you in this town, flee to another, for truly I say to you, you will never finish going through the towns of Israel until the Son of Man comes.

⁴³ "Now whenever an unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it travels through waterless places searching for rest, and does not find it.* ⁴⁴ Then it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came out.' And when it* arrives it finds the house* unoccupied and swept and put in order. ⁴⁵ Then it goes and brings along with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and* live there. And the last state of that person becomes worse than the first. So it will be for this evil generation also!"

³⁰ But he passed through their midst and* went on his way.

²⁰ For if, after they* have escaped from the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord* and Savior Jesus Christ, and they are again entangled in these things and succumb to them, the last state has become worse for them than the first. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than having known it, to turn back from the holy commandment that had been delivered to them. ²² The statement of the true proverb has happened to them, "A dog returns to its own vomit,"* and "A sow, after* washing herself, returns* to wallowing in the mud."*

Make them to wander by your power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield. ¹² By the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips, even in their pride, let them be trapped, and for the curses* and lies* they proclaim. ¹³ Destroy in anger; destroy so they are no more, so that they may know that God is ruling in Jacob to the ends of the earth. ⁴ The children of Israel will remain for many days without a king and prince, without sacrifice and stone pillar, ephod and teraphim.

⁵ And when it was time to shut the gate _⌊for the night_⌋,* the men left, and I do not know where they went. Chase after them quickly, for you may catch up to them."

¹⁷ Then _⌊he returned_⌋* to Ramah, because his house was there, and there he judged Israel, and he built an altar to Yahweh there.

³⁴ Then Samuel went to Ramah and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul.

³ (Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him, and they had buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had expelled the mediums* and the soothsayers from the land.)

¹¹ I said in my haste, "_⌊Everyone_⌋* is a liar."

¹⁶ Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much.

⁹ But Doeg the Edomite, who was stationed among the servants of Saul, answered and said, "I saw the son of Jesse going to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of Yahweh for him and gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine."

¹⁹ Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh on the hill of Hakilah, which is south of Jeshimon?

¹ The Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is not David hiding on the hill of Hakilah opposite Jeshimon?"

¹² A ruler listening to a word of falsehood, all his officials are wicked.

²⁵ Then Yahweh went down in the cloud and spoke to him, and he took away the spirit that was on him, and he _⌊put it_⌋* on the seventy elders. And as soon as the spirit was resting on them they prophesied, but they did not do it again. ²⁶ But two men were left in the camp; the name of one was Eldad, and the name of the second was Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those who were written down, but they did not go out to the tent, so they prophesied in the camp.

⁵ After this, you will come to the Gibeah of God,* where there are sentries* of the Philistines. _⌊Just as you enter_⌋* the town there, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place, with harp, tambourine, flute, and zither before them, and they will be prophesying. ⁶ Then the Spirit of Yahweh will rush upon you,* and you will prophesy with them; and you will turn into _⌊a different person_⌋.*

¹⁰ When they went from there to Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him,* and he prophesied among them.

¹¹ Then Saul sent messengers to David's house to guard him and to kill him in the morning, but Michal his wife told David, saying, "If _⌊you do not save your life_⌋* tonight, then tomorrow you will be killed!"

²⁸ * And it will happen afterward thus: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your elders will dream dreams; your young men shall see visions.

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers in order _⌊to take him into custody _⌋.*

⁴⁵ So the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees. And they said to them, "_⌊Why_⌋* did you not bring him?" ⁴⁶ The officers replied, "Never has a man spoken like this!" ⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees replied to them, "You have not also been deceived, have you?* ⁴⁸ _⌊None_⌋* of the rulers or of the Pharisees have believed in him, have they?* ⁴⁹ But this crowd who does not know the law is accursed!" ⁵⁰ Nicodemus, the one who came to him previously—who was one of them—said to them, ⁵¹ "Our law does not condemn a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?"* ⁵² They answered and said to him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you?* Investigate and see that a prophet does not arise from Galilee!"
