¹ Now Samuel died, and all Israel assembled and mourned for him. They buried him at his house at Ramah. Then David got up and went down to the wilderness of Paran. ² Now there was a man in Maon, whose business was in Carmel. The man was very rich and _⌊owned_⌋* three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. _⌊Now_⌋* the shearing of his sheep was taking place in Carmel. ³ The name of the man was Nabal,* and the name of his wife was Abigail.* Now the woman was wise and beautiful, but the man was stubborn and _⌊mean_⌋,* and he was as his heart.* ⁴ David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep. ⁵ So David sent ten young men, and David said to the young men, "Go up to Carmel and go to Nabal; _⌊you will greet him in my name_⌋.* ⁶ Then you must say to him, 'Long life to you, and _⌊may it go well with you, with your house, and with all that is yours_⌋.* ⁷ Now I have heard that _⌊you have shearers_⌋.* Now while your shepherds were with us, we did not mistreat them, and nothing of theirs was missing, all the days they were in Carmel. ⁸ Ask your servants* and they will tell you! Let the young men* find favor in your eyes because we have come on a feast day. Please give _⌊whatever you have on hand_⌋* for your servants and for your son David." ⁹ So David's young men came and they spoke all these words to Nabal in the name of David. Then they waited. ¹⁰ But Nabal answered David's servants and said, "Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? Today, there are many servants breaking away from the presence of their masters. ¹¹ Should I take my bread and my water and my meat which I have slaughtered for my shearers and give it to men whom I do not know where they are from? ¹² So David's young men turned on their way and returned and came and told him according to all these words. ¹³ Then David said to his men, "Each man strap on his sword!" So each one strapped on his sword, and David also strapped on his sword. About four hundred men went up after David, while two hundred remained with the baggage. ¹⁴ But a young man of the servants told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, "Look, David sent messengers from the desert to greet* our master, but he addressed them angrily, ¹⁵ even though the men were very good to us; we were not mistreated and did not miss anything all the days we went about with them _⌊while we were_⌋* in the field. ¹⁶ They were a wall to us both night and day, all _⌊the days we were_⌋* with them keeping the sheep. ¹⁷ And so then, know and _⌊consider_⌋* what you should do, for evil has been decided against our master and against all his household, and he is such _⌊a wicked man_⌋,* _⌊nobody can reason with him_⌋!"* ¹⁸ Then Abigail _⌊quickly took_⌋* two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five prepared sheep, five seahs of roasted grain, a hundred raisin cakes, and two hundred fig cakes, and she put them on the donkeys. ¹⁹ Then she said to her servants, "Go ahead before me; look, I am coming after you," but she did not tell her husband Nabal. ²⁰ _⌊And then_⌋,* as she was riding on the donkey and was going down the ravine of the mountain, David and his men were coming down to meet her, and she met them. ²¹ Now David had said, "Surely _⌊in vain_⌋* I guarded all that this fellow had in the desert. And nothing was missed of all that was his, but he returned evil against me in place of good! ²² _⌊May God severely punish the enemies of David_⌋* and again do thus if I leave behind _⌊anything that is his_⌋* until the morning, not even _⌊one male_⌋!"* ²³ When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got down from the donkey and fell on her face before _⌊David's anger_⌋,* and she bowed down to the ground. ²⁴ She fell at his feet and said, "On me, my lord, be the guilt! Please let your female servant speak _⌊to you personally_⌋!* Hear the words of your female servant! ²⁵ Please do not let my lord set his heart against _⌊this worthless man_⌋,* Nabal; for as his name, so is he. Nabal is his name, and stupidity is with him! But I, your female servant, did not see the young men* of my lord whom you sent. ²⁶ So then, my lord, _⌊as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives_⌋,* since Yahweh restrained you from bloodguilt _⌊by taking matters into your own hand_⌋,* so then, may your enemies be like Nabal, even _⌊those who seek to do my lord harm_⌋.* ²⁷ So then, this gift which your female servant has brought to my lord, may it be given to the young men _⌊who follow my lord_⌋.* ²⁸ Please forgive the transgression of your female servant, because Yahweh will certainly make a lasting house* for my lord, because my lord is fighting the battles of Yahweh, and evil will not be found in you _⌊as long as you live_⌋.* ²⁹ Should a man arise to pursue you and to seek your life, may the life of my lord be wrapped in the pouch* of the living with Yahweh your God. But as for the life of your enemy, he will sling it from within* the pocket of the sling! ³⁰ _⌊And then_⌋* when Yahweh has done for my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you as leader over Israel, ³¹ then this will not be an obstacle for you or a stumbling block of conscience for my lord either by the shedding of blood without cause or by _⌊my lord taking matters into his own hands_⌋.* And when Yahweh does good to my lord, then remember your female servant." ³² Then David said to Abigail, "Blessed be Yahweh the God of Israel who has sent you this day to meet me! ³³ And blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you who have prevented me this day from bloodguilt and from delivering myself by my own hand. ³⁴ But _⌊as Yahweh lives_⌋,* the God of Israel who has prevented me from harming you, if you had not hurried and come to meet me, surely there would not have been _⌊one male_⌋* left alive for Nabal by the light of morning!" ³⁵ Then David took from her hand what she had brought for him, and he said to her, "Go up to your house in peace. See, I have listened to your voice, and I have _⌊granted your request_⌋."* ³⁶ Then Abigail went to Nabal, and look, _⌊he was holding a feast_⌋* in his house like the feast of the king. _⌊Nabal was enjoying himself_⌋,* and he was very drunk, so she did not tell him a thing, _⌊nothing at all_⌋,* until the light of morning. ³⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* in the morning when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these words. Then his heart died _⌊within him_⌋,* and he became like a stone. ³⁸ _⌊And then_⌋,* about ten days later, Yahweh struck Nabal and he died. ³⁹ When David heard that Nabal had died, he said, "Blessed be Yahweh who has vindicated the case of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and he has kept back his servant from evil; but Yahweh has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head." Then David sent and spoke with Abigail to take her for his wife. ⁴⁰ So the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, and they spoke to her, saying, "David has sent us to you to take you for his wife." ⁴¹ She got up and bowed down with her face to the ground and said, "Here is your female servant, as a slave to wash the feet of my lord's servants." ⁴² Then Abigail _⌊quickly got up_⌋* and rode on the donkey, along with five of her maidservants who _⌊attended her_⌋,* and she went after the messengers of David and became his wife. ⁴³ David had also taken Ahinoam from Jezreel, and both of them became his wives. ⁴⁴ (Now Saul had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from Gallim.)

⁶ And the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El-Paran, which is at the wilderness.

²¹ And he lived in the wilderness of Paran. And his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

¹¹ And when the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, saw the mourning ceremony at the threshing floor of Atad they said, "This is a severe mourning for the Egyptians." Therefore its name was called Abel-Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

¹² And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out for their journey* from the desert of Sinai, and the cloud dwelled in the desert of Paran.

¹⁶ And afterward the people set out from Hazeroth, and they encamped in the desert of Paran.

³ So Moses sent them from the desert of Paran on the command of Yahweh; all of the men were _⌊leaders_⌋* of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

²⁶ And they came* to Moses and Aaron and to the entire community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Paran at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the community, and they showed them the fruit of the land.

²⁹ All the community saw that Aaron died; so all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty days.*

⁸ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* wept concerning Moses thirty days; finally the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were completed.

¹⁷ Then _⌊he returned_⌋* to Ramah, because his house was there, and there he judged Israel, and he built an altar to Yahweh there.

³ (Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him, and they had buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had expelled the mediums* and the soothsayers from the land.)

³⁴ So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up, and he fell on him and killed him, and he was buried in his house in the wilderness.

²⁰ And Manasseh slept with his ancestors,* and they buried him in his house. And Amon his son became king in his place.

⁵ Woe to me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar.

¹⁸ All the kings of the nations, all of them, lie in glory, each one in his house.

² And devout men buried Stephen and made loud lamentation over him.

² Now Abram was very wealthy in livestock, in silver, and in gold.

¹³ And the man _⌊became wealthier and wealthier_⌋* until he was exceedingly wealthy.

¹³ And it was told to Tamar, saying, "Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep."

²⁴ Then they got up and went to Ziph before Saul.
Now David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon in the Arabah, to the south of Jeshimon.

⁵ Two of David's wives had been taken captive. Ahinoam _⌊from Jezreel_⌋* and Abigail, the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

²³ _⌊About two full years later_⌋,* Absalom's shearers were in Baal Hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom summoned all the sons of the king. ²⁴ Then Absalom went to the king and said, "Look, here are your servant's shearers; please let the king and his servants go with your servant.

³² Now Barzillai was very old, _⌊eighty years old_⌋.* Now he had provided the king with food while he was staying at Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy man.

³ Then* his livestock came to be seven thousand sheep and goats and three thousand camels and five hundred pairs* of oxen and five hundred female donkeys, and he had very many slaves, and that man was greater than all the people of the east.

¹² So* Yahweh blessed Job's latter days more than his beginning. _⌊Thus he had_⌋* fourteen thousand sheep and goats and six thousand camels and a thousand pair of oxen and a thousand female donkeys.

¹⁴ from men by your hand, O Yahweh, from men of this world. Their share is in _⌊this life_⌋,* and you fill their stomach with your treasure. They are satisfied with children. They bequeath their excess to their children.

³ because I envied the boastful when I saw the well-being* of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no pains up to their death, and their bodies are _⌊healthy_⌋.* ⁵ They do not have _⌊ordinary trouble_⌋,* and they are not plagued as other people.* ⁶ Therefore pride is their necklace; an outfit of violence covers them. ⁷ Their eye bulges from fat.* Imaginings overflow their heart.

¹⁹ "Now a certain man was rich, and dressed in purple cloth and fine linen, feasting sumptuously every day. ²⁰ And a certain poor man _⌊named_⌋* Lazarus, covered with sores, lay at his gate, ²¹ and was longing to be filled with what fell from the table of the rich man. But even the dogs came and* licked his sores. ²² Now it happened that the poor man died, and he was carried away by the angels to _⌊Abraham's side_⌋.* And the rich man also died and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes as he* was in torment and* saw Abraham from a distance, and Lazarus _⌊at his side_⌋.* ²⁴ And he called out and* said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he could dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am suffering pain in this flame!' ²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you received your good things during your life, and Lazarus likewise bad things. But now he is comforted here, but you are suffering pain.

¹³ _⌊According to the commandment of Yahweh to Joshua_⌋,* he gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a plot of ground among the descendants* of Judah, Kiriath Arba,* which is Hebron (Arba was Anak's father).

¹⁰ But Nabal answered David's servants and said, "Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? Today, there are many servants breaking away from the presence of their masters. ¹¹ Should I take my bread and my water and my meat which I have slaughtered for my shearers and give it to men whom I do not know where they are from?

¹⁷ And so then, know and _⌊consider_⌋* what you should do, for evil has been decided against our master and against all his household, and he is such _⌊a wicked man_⌋,* _⌊nobody can reason with him_⌋!"*

¹⁴ We raided the Negev of the Kerethites and that which belongs to Judah and then the Negev of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag with fire."

³ for the wicked boasts about the desire of his _⌊heart_⌋,* and the one greedy for gain curses and treats Yahweh with contempt.

¹ The _⌊wisest of women_⌋* builds her house, but the foolish tears it down with her hands.

¹⁰ A woman* of excellence,* who will find? For her worth is far more than precious jewels.

²⁶ She opens her mouth with wisdom, and instruction of kindness is upon her tongue.

³⁰ Charm* is deceit and beauty* is vain;* but a woman who fears Yahweh shall be praised. ³¹ Give to her from the fruit of her hand, and may they praise her works in the city gates.

⁵ A fool will no longer be called noble, and a scoundrel will not be said to be eminent. ⁶ For a fool speaks folly, and his _⌊mind_⌋* does iniquity: to _⌊behave wickedly_⌋,* and to speak error concerning Yahweh, to leave the throat of the hungry empty, and he deprives the thirsty of drink. ⁷ And a scoundrel, his weapons are evil; he plans evil devices to ruin the poor with words of deception even* when the speech of the needy is right.

²³ _⌊About two full years later_⌋,* Absalom's shearers were in Baal Hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom summoned all the sons of the king.

²³ And he said, "Peace to you; do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father must have given you a treasure in your sacks; your money came to me." And he brought Simeon out to them.

²² David left the baggage he had with him in the _⌊care_⌋* of the baggage keeper, ran to the battle line, and came and _⌊asked how his brothers were doing_⌋.*

²⁸ Then Ahimaaz called and said to the king, "Peace." He bowed down to the king with his face to the ground, and he said, "May Yahweh your God be blessed, who has delivered the men who raised their hand against my lord the king."

¹⁸ Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the thirty who said:
"We are yours, O David! And we are with you, O son of Jesse! Peace! Peace to you, and peace to those who help you, for your God helps you."
So David appointed them as heads of the troops.

⁷ May peace be within your walls, security within your palaces."

¹² And when you* enter into the house, greet it. ¹³ And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

⁵ And into whatever house you enter, first say, "Peace be to this household!"

²⁷ "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you—not as the world gives, I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them* be afraid.

⁸ because now we live, if you stand firm in the Lord.

¹⁶ Now may the Lord of peace himself grant you peace through everything in every way. May the Lord be with all of you.

⁶ But the one who lives for sensual pleasure is dead even though she* lives.

² Every man in distress and every man who had a creditor and every embittered man gathered to him, and he became _⌊their commander_⌋.* Now there were about four hundred men with him.

¹⁵ even though the men were very good to us; we were not mistreated and did not miss anything all the days we went about with them _⌊while we were_⌋* in the field. ¹⁶ They were a wall to us both night and day, all _⌊the days we were_⌋* with them keeping the sheep.

²¹ Now David had said, "Surely _⌊in vain_⌋* I guarded all that this fellow had in the desert. And nothing was missed of all that was his, but he returned evil against me in place of good!

⁶ And a wolf shall _⌊stay_⌋* with a lamb, and a leopard shall lie down with a kid, and a calf and a lion and a fatling together _⌊as a small boy leads_⌋* them. ⁷ And a cow and a bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together. And a lion shall eat straw like the cattle. ⁸ And _⌊an infant_⌋* shall play over a serpent's hole, and _⌊a toddler_⌋* shall put his hand on a viper's hole. ⁹ They will not injure and they will not destroy on all of my _⌊holy mountain_⌋,* for the earth will be full of the knowledge of Yahweh, as the waters cover the sea.

¹⁴ And those who served in the army were also asking him, saying, "What should we also do?" And he said to them, "Extort from no one, and do not blackmail anyone,* and be content with your pay."

¹⁵ in order that you may become blameless and innocent, children of God without fault* in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine as stars in the world,*

⁸ Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are pleasing, whatever things are commendable, if there is any excellence of character and if anything praiseworthy, think about these things.

⁶ And Yahweh called Samuel again, so Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, because you called me." And he said, "I did not call you, my son. Go back and lie down."

¹¹ Now, my father, see, yes, see, the hem of your robe in my hand! For _⌊when I cut_⌋* the hem of your robe I did not kill you. Know and _⌊realize_⌋* that there is no evil or rebellion in my hand. I did not sin against you, but you are hunting down my life to take it.

¹⁰ Then he said to them, "Go, eat festive food and drink sweet drinks, and send a share to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our lord. Do not be grieved because the joy of Yahweh is your refuge." ¹¹ So the Levites silenced all of the people, saying, "Silence, for this day is holy. Do not be grieved." ¹² All of the people went to eat, to drink, to send a share, and to have great joy because they understood the words that they had made known to them.

¹⁹ Therefore the Jews in the rural areas, living in the rural towns, made the fourteenth month of Adar a day of joy and feasting, a festive day of giving gifts to each other.

²² as the day that the Jews _⌊found relief_⌋* from their enemies, and the month which changed for them from sorrow to joy, and from a mourning ceremony to a _⌊festive day_⌋;* to make them days of feasting and joy, and giving gifts to each other and to the poor.

² Divide your share in seven or in eight, for you do not know what disaster will happen on the earth.

⁴¹ But give as charitable giving the things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.

¹² And he also said to the one who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or wealthy neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and repayment come to you. ¹³ But whenever you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, ¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they are not able to repay you. For it will be paid back to you at the resurrection of the righteous."

⁴ And the ark came to rest in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.

¹⁵ When the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him from the other side, they declared, "The spirit of Elijah rests upon Elisha," and they came to meet him and bowed down to him to the ground.

⁷ And he said to Judah, "Let us build these cities and surround them with walls, towers, gates, and bars while the land is before us, because we have sought Yahweh our God. We have sought and he has given rest to us on every side." So they built and had success.

² And Pharaoh said, "Who is Yahweh that I should listen to his voice to release Israel? I do not know Yahweh, and also I will not release Israel."

²⁸ Then Gaal son of Ebed said, "Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerub-Baal, and is not Zebul his chief officer?* Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem. Why should we serve him?*

³⁰ Then _⌊Saul became angry_⌋* at Jonathan and said to him, "You son of a perverse, rebellious woman!* Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your shame and to the shame of your mother's nakedness?

⁷ Then Saul said to the servants who were standing around him, "Please listen, _⌊Benjaminites_⌋!* Will the son of Jesse give you all fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds? ⁸ For all of you have conspired against me, and _⌊no one discloses to me_⌋* the _⌊making_⌋* of an agreement between my son and the son of Jesse! None of you have had sympathy for me or _⌊disclosed to me_⌋* that _⌊my son commissioned my servant against me to ambush me_⌋* as has been done this day!"

¹ Now a man of wickedness was found there whose name was Sheba the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. He blew the horn and said, "There is no share for us in David, and there is no inheritance for us in the son of Jesse; each to his tents, O Israel!"

¹⁶ When all of Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, "_⌊What share do we have in David_⌋?* There is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now look to your house, David!" Then Israel went to their* tents.

⁷ Their eye bulges from fat.* Imaginings overflow their heart. ⁸ They mock and speak maliciously of oppression; they speak as though from on high.

³ Be gracious to us, O Yahweh, be gracious to us, for long enough we have had our fill of contempt. ⁴ For long enough our soul has had its fill of the derision of the self-confident, the contempt of the arrogant.

¹⁰ Do not say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.

⁵ A fool will no longer be called noble, and a scoundrel will not be said to be eminent.

⁷ And a scoundrel, his weapons are evil; he plans evil devices to ruin the poor with words of deception even* when the speech of the needy is right.

¹⁷ And you may think* in your heart, 'My strength and the might of my hand _⌊acquired this wealth for_⌋* me.'

⁶ The officials of Succoth said, "Is the hand* of Zebah and Zalmunna in your hand now, that we should give bread to your army?"

¹³ Just as the ancient proverb says, 'From the wicked, wickedness goes out,' but my hand will not be against you!

³ The name of the man was Nabal,* and the name of his wife was Abigail.* Now the woman was wise and beautiful, but the man was stubborn and _⌊mean_⌋,* and he was as his heart.*

¹ Send out your bread on the water, for in many days you will find it. ² Divide your share in seven or in eight, for you do not know what disaster will happen on the earth.

²⁹ We know that God has spoken to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from." ³⁰ The man answered and said to them, "For the remarkable thing is this, that you do not know where he is from, and he opened my eyes!

⁹ as unknown and yet known completely, as dying, and behold, we go on living, as disciplined, and yet not put to death, ¹⁰ So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the household of faith.

⁹ Be hospitable to one another without complaining.

¹³ Then Gad came to David, and he told him and said to him, "Shall seven years of famine in the land come to you? Or three months of your fleeing from your enemies while he is pursuing you? Or should there be three days of pestilence in your land? Now consider and decide what I must return to the one who sent me a word."

²¹ But* they were silent and did not answer him a word, for the command of the king was, "You must not answer him." ²² Then* Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the _⌊palace_⌋,* Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the reminder, came to Hezekiah with torn garments and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

¹⁷ Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account, so that they can do this with joy and not with groaning, for this would be unprofitable for you.

¹⁴ So the leaders* took from their provisions, but _⌊they did not ask direction from Yahweh_⌋.*

¹³ So David and his men got up, about six hundred men, and went out from Keilah and wandered wherever they could go. When it was told to Saul that David had escaped from Keilah, _⌊he stopped his pursuit_⌋.*

⁵ _⌊And then_⌋* afterward David _⌊felt guilty_⌋,* because he had cut _⌊the hem of Saul's robe_⌋.* ⁶ He said to his men, "Far be it from me in* Yahweh, that I do this thing to my lord, to Yahweh's anointed one, by stretching out my hand against him! For he is the anointed one of Yahweh."

⁹ So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and they came to the Wadi* Besor, but the rest remained. ¹⁰ David pursued, he and four hundred men; but two hundred men stayed because they were too exhausted to pass over the Wadi Besor.

²¹ Then David came to the two hundred men _⌊who had been too exhausted to follow_⌋* David; they had left them behind at the Wadi* Besor. They went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him. David came near with the people and _⌊asked them how they were doing_⌋.* ²² Then all the corrupt and useless men among the men who went with David reacted and said, "Because they did not go with us, we will not give them anything from the plunder which we recovered, _⌊except_⌋* each man may take his own wife and children. They must take them along and go!" ²³ But David said to them, "You should not do so, my brothers, with what Yahweh has given to us! He has preserved us and has given the raiding band that came against us into our hand. ²⁴ And who would listen to you regarding this matter? For as the share of the one who went down into the battle, so the share of the one who remained with the baggage will be. They will share alike."

²⁹ He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but the hasty of spirit* exalts folly.

³² He who is slow to anger* is better than him who is mighty, and he who controls his spirit than him who captures a city.

² Also, a life* without knowledge is not good, and he who moves quickly with his feet _⌊misses the mark_⌋.*

¹¹ The understanding of a person makes him slow to his _⌊anger_⌋,* and his glory overlooks offense.

³⁴ But _⌊as Yahweh lives_⌋,* the God of Israel who has prevented me from harming you, if you had not hurried and come to meet me, surely there would not have been _⌊one male_⌋* left alive for Nabal by the light of morning!"

¹ Now David passed a little from beyond the summit, and suddenly Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth was there to meet him with a pair of saddled donkeys; on them were two hundred loaves of bread and a hundred raisin cakes, with a hundred summer fruits and a skin of wine.

¹⁷ And he said, "What is the message* that he spoke to you? Please do not conceal it from me. May God _⌊punish you severely_⌋* if you conceal anything from me of all the words that he told you."

⁴⁴ Then Saul said, "So may God do to me and _⌊more_⌋,* you will certainly die today, Jonathan!"

¹³ _⌊So may Yahweh punish Jonathan and more_⌋* if _⌊my father decides to do you harm_⌋* and if _⌊I fail to disclose it to you_⌋* and send word to you that you can go safely. And may Yahweh be with you, as he has been with my father.

¹⁶ So Jonathan _⌊made a covenant_⌋* with the house of David, saying, "May Yahweh _⌊call the enemies of David to account_⌋."*

²⁸ Please forgive the transgression of your female servant, because Yahweh will certainly make a lasting house* for my lord, because my lord is fighting the battles of Yahweh, and evil will not be found in you _⌊as long as you live_⌋.*

³³ So then, let not my lord the king set his heart on this matter, thinking, 'All the sons of the king are dead,' for only Amnon alone is dead."

²⁵ So* he poured the wrath of his anger upon him and the strength of war. And it set him afire all around, but* he did not understand;* and it burned him, but* he did not take it to heart.

³² The king said to the Cushite, "Is it peace for the young man Absalom?" Then the Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up against you _⌊to harm you_⌋* be like the young man!"

¹⁵ When he returned to the man of God, he and all of his army, he came and stood before him and said, "Please now, I know that there is no God in all of the world except in Israel. So then, please take a gift from your servant."

⁵ Therefore I considered it necessary to urge the brothers that they should go on ahead to you and make arrangements in advance for your generous gift that was promised previously, so this would be prepared as a generous gift and not as grudgingly granted.

²⁸ Then Samuel said to him, "Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to your neighbor _⌊who is better than you_⌋.*

⁴⁷ And all of this assembly will know that Yahweh does not rescue with sword or with spear, for the battle belongs to Yahweh, and he will give you into our hands!"

¹⁷ Then Saul said to David, "Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you as your wife. Only be _⌊a brave warrior_⌋* for me and fight the battles of Yahweh." For Saul thought, "My hand will not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him."

⁶ He said to his men, "Far be it from me in* Yahweh, that I do this thing to my lord, to Yahweh's anointed one, by stretching out my hand against him! For he is the anointed one of Yahweh." ⁷ So David rebuked his men with the words and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul got up from the cave, and he went on his* way.

¹⁷ Then he said to David, "You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me the good, but I have repaid you the evil.

²⁴ She fell at his feet and said, "On me, my lord, be the guilt! Please let your female servant speak _⌊to you personally_⌋!* Hear the words of your female servant!

² _⌊For some time_⌋,* when Saul was king over us, _⌊you were leading Israel in and out_⌋.* Yahweh had said to you, 'You shall be the shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be the leader over Israel.'"

¹¹ _⌊In the manner that_⌋* I appointed judges over my people Israel, I will give you rest from all your enemies. And Yahweh declares to you that Yahweh will build a house for you.

¹⁶ Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before you; your throne shall be established forever." '"

²⁷ For you, O Yahweh of hosts, are God of Israel! You have revealed to the ear of your servant, 'I will build a house for you'; therefore your servant _⌊has found courage_⌋* to pray this prayer to you.

⁵ then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, as I promised David your father, saying, 'A man will not be cut off for you from upon the throne of Israel.'

⁵ because David did right in the eyes of Yahweh and he didn't turn aside from all that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

¹⁰ from the day that I commanded judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue your enemies, and I declare to you that Yahweh will build for you a house.*

²⁵ For you, my God, _⌊have informed_⌋* your servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore, your servant has found courage to pray before you.

¹⁵ And he said, "Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat, thus says Yahweh to you: 'Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed before this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's.

¹ Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of Yahweh. ² Blessed are those who keep his testimonies; they seek him with a whole heart. ³ They also do no wrong; they walk in his ways.

¹⁶ In the same way let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

⁴¹ And we indeed justly, for we are receiving _⌊what we deserve_⌋* for what we have done. But this man has done nothing wrong!"

⁴⁷ Now when* the centurion saw what had happened, he began to praise* God, saying, "Certainly this man was righteous!"

¹⁰ Finally, become strong in the Lord and in the might of his strength. ¹¹ Put on the full armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the stratagems of the devil,

¹ After these things the word of Yahweh came* to Abram in a vision, saying: "Do not be afraid, Abram; I am your shield, and your reward shall be very great."

²⁹ Blessed are you, O Israel. Who is like you, a people who is saved by Yahweh, the shield of your help, and who is the sword of your triumph, and your enemies, they shall fawn before you,* and you shall tread on their backs."

⁹ He will guard the feet of his faithful* ones, but the wicked will be destroyed* in the darkness, because a man will not prevail by his might.

⁹ the one who has kept our soul among the living, and has not allowed our foot to slip.

¹⁵ Costly _⌊in Yahweh's view_⌋* is the death of his faithful ones.

¹⁸ For thus says Yahweh,
"Look, I am about to sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and I will bring distress to them, so that they may feel it."

¹⁷ "They will be mine," says Yahweh of hosts, "on the day that I am acting, my treasured possession. I will have compassion on them as a man has compassion on his son who serves him.

²⁹ Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?* And one of them will not fall to the ground _⌊without the knowledge and consent_⌋* of your Father. ³⁰ And even the hairs of your head are all numbered!

²⁷ My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. ²⁸ And I give them eternal life, and they will never perish _⌊forever_⌋,* and no one will seize them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, who has given them* to me, is greater than all, and no one can seize them* from the Father's hand. ³⁰ The Father and I are one."

¹⁹ Yet a little time and the world will see me no longer, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live.

²¹ that they all may be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, that they also may be in us, in order that the world may believe that you sent me.

²³ I in them, and you in me, in order that they may be completed in one, so that the world may know that you sent me, and you have loved them just as you have loved me.

³ For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. ⁴ When Christ, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

⁵ who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time,

¹⁴ But now, your kingdom will not endure. Yahweh has sought for himself a man according to his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him as leader over his people, because you have not kept what Yahweh commanded you."

¹⁷ He said to him, "Do not be afraid, for the hand of my father Saul will not find you. You will be king over Israel, and _⌊I will be second to you_⌋.* My father Saul knows this also."

²⁰ I have found David, my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him,

¹⁴ But remember me when it goes well with you, and please may you show kindness with respect to me, and mention me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house.

¹⁵ May Yahweh be the judge, and let him judge between me and you, and may he see and plead my case. _⌊May he vindicate me against you_⌋!"*

³³ And blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you who have prevented me this day from bloodguilt and from delivering myself by my own hand.

⁴⁰ So the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, and they spoke to her, saying, "David has sent us to you to take you for his wife."

²³ Yahweh repays to each one his righteousness and his faithfulness, for Yahweh gave you into my hand today, but I was not willing to stretch out my hand against Yahweh's anointed.

⁴⁸ God does vengeance for me, bringing down peoples under me.

¹ O Yahweh, God of vengeance, God of vengeance, shine forth.

¹² and say "How I hated discipline, and I despised reproof!" ¹³ and "I did not listen to the voice of my teachers, and I did not incline my ear to my instructors!

⁴² And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!"

¹⁹ Do not take revenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God's wrath, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay,"* says the Lord.

²¹ It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine or to do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is weakened.*

¹² For our reason for boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, in holiness* and purity of motive from God, not* in merely human wisdom, but by the grace of God.

²⁷ And he said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld* his loyal love and his faithfulness from my master. I was on the way and Yahweh led me to the house of my master's brother."

¹⁰ And Jethro said, "Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you from the hand of Egypt and from the hand of Pharaoh—who has delivered the people from under the hand of Egypt.

²⁷ Blessed be Yahweh the God of our ancestors,* who put this in the heart of the king to glorify the house of Yahweh in Jerusalem

¹² As for me, you have upheld me in my integrity, and you have set me in your presence forever. ¹³ Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen.

¹⁸ Blessed be Yahweh God, the God of Israel, who alone does wonderful things.

⁶⁸ "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited to help and _⌊has redeemed_⌋* his people,

¹⁶ But thanks be to God, who has put in the heart of Titus the same devotion _⌊on your behalf_⌋*,

¹⁹ For a man has found his enemy but sent him on his way safely. Now may Yahweh reward you with good in return for this day, for what you have done for me.

³¹ then this will not be an obstacle for you or a stumbling block of conscience for my lord either by the shedding of blood without cause or by _⌊my lord taking matters into his own hands_⌋.* And when Yahweh does good to my lord, then remember your female servant."

⁹ But David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy* him! For who has stretched out his hand against Yahweh's anointed one and remained blameless?" ¹⁰ And David said, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* _⌊certainly_⌋* Yahweh will strike him, or his day will come and he will die, or he will go down in the battle and _⌊perish_⌋.*

⁵ Let a righteous one strike me in kindness, and let him chasten me. It is oil for my head;* let not my head refuse. For still my prayer is against their evil deeds.

⁹ Give to a wise one and he will become more wise; _⌊teach_⌋* a righteous one and he will increase learning.

¹⁰ A rebuke strikes him who understands deeper than one hundred blows to a fool.

¹² A ring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a rebuke of the wise to the ear of a listener.

²¹ A crucible is for the silver, and a furnace for the gold, but a man is tested by the mouth of him who praises him.

²³ He who rebukes a person will afterward find more favor than he who flatters with the tongue.

⁶ And the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying, "_⌊Do not abandon_⌋* your servant. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, for all the kings of the Amorites* who dwell in the hill country have gathered against us."

⁹ Joshua came upon them suddenly _⌊by marching up_⌋* all night from Gilgal.

Then they came into the middle of the camp _⌊at the early morning watch_⌋* and struck down _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* until the heat of the day. It happened that the remainder were scattered _⌊so that no two among them remained together_⌋.*

¹⁸ Then Abigail _⌊quickly took_⌋* two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five prepared sheep, five seahs of roasted grain, a hundred raisin cakes, and two hundred fig cakes, and she put them on the donkeys.

²¹ And he said to him, "Behold, _⌊I will grant this favor as well_⌋;* that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.

⁴² Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, because we have sworn, the two of us, an oath in the name of Yahweh, saying, "Yahweh will be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring forever."* Then he got up and left, and Jonathan went into the city.

⁹ Then the king said to him, "Go in peace." So he got up and went to Hebron.

¹⁹ He said to him, "Go in peace," so he went from him _⌊a short distance_⌋.*

¹⁹ who _⌊shows no partiality to officials_⌋* and who _⌊does not take note of the noble more than of the insignificant_⌋,* for all of them are the work of his hands?

⁵⁰ And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."

⁴⁸ And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace."

¹⁹ Then she said to her servants, "Go ahead before me; look, I am coming after you," but she did not tell her husband Nabal.

²⁸ Absalom commanded his servants, saying, "Please watch. At the moment the heart of Amnon is _⌊tipsy_⌋* with wine, then I shall say to you, 'Strike Amnon down,' and you shall kill him! Don't be afraid. Is it not I myself who has commanded you? Be courageous and be _⌊valiant!_⌋*

¹⁶ They went out at noon while Ben-Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the tents, he and the thirty-two kings helping him.

³ he gave a banquet in the third year of his reign for all his officials and servants. The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and officials of the provinces were in his presence ⁴ as he displayed the wealth of the glory of his kingdom and the glorious splendor of his greatness for many days, one hundred and eighty days*. ⁵ And when those days were completed, the king gave for all the people that were present at the citadel of Susa, both great and small, a banquet in the courtyard of the king's palace garden that lasted seven days. ⁶ There were curtains of finely woven linen and blue cloth tied with cords of fine white linen and purple cloth to silver curtain rings and pillars of alabaster, and couches of gold and silver on a paved floor of alabaster, precious stone, mother-of-pearl, and costly stones.* ⁷ Drinks were served in goblets of gold and _⌊goblets of different kinds_⌋,* and there was _⌊plentiful royal wine according to the bounty of the king_⌋.*

⁵ It goes well for a man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his _⌊business properly_⌋.*

¹ Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and any who go astray by it are not wise.

²⁹ To whom is woe? To whom is sorrow? To whom are quarrels? To whom is complaint? To whom are wounds without cause? To whom is redness of the eyes? ³⁰ To those who linger over wine, to those who come to try mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look at wine when it is red, when it _⌊sparkles_⌋* on the cup, going down smoothly. ³² _⌊In the end_⌋,* it will bite like a serpent, and it will sting like an adder. ³³ Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart* will speak perverse things. ³⁴ And you will be like him who lies down in the heart of the sea, and like him who lies down on top of a mast. ³⁵ "They struck me; I was not hurt. They beat me; I did not know it. When I will awake, I will continue; I will seek it again."

² I said of laughter, "It is folly!" and of pleasure, "_⌊What does it accomplish?_⌋"* ³ I also _⌊explored_⌋* _⌊the effects of indulging my flesh_⌋* with wine. My mind guiding me with wisdom, _⌊I investigated_⌋* folly so that I might discover what is good under heaven* for _⌊humans_⌋* to do _⌊during the days of their lives_⌋.*

¹⁹ _⌊Feasts are held for celebration_⌋,* wine cheers the living, and money answers everything.

¹¹ Ah! Those who rise early in the morning, they pursue strong drink. Those who linger in the evening, wine inflames them.

³ The garland of the pride of the drunkards of Ephraim will be trampled* by feet,

⁷ And these also stagger because of wine and stagger because of strong drink; priest and prophet stagger because of strong drink; they are confused* because of wine. They stagger because of strong drink; they err in vision. They stagger in the rendering of a decision, ⁸ for all the tables are full of disgusting vomit, _⌊with no place left_⌋.*

⁵⁷ "And I will make drunk her officials, and her wise men, her governors, and her officials, and her warriors, and they will sleep _⌊an everlasting sleep_⌋,* and they will not wake up," _⌊declares_⌋* the King, Yahweh of hosts is his name.

¹ Belshazzar the king made a great festival for a thousand of his lords,* and _⌊in the presence of_⌋* the thousand lords he was drinking wine.* ² _⌊When he tasted the wine_⌋,* Belshazzar commanded that they bring the vessels of gold and silver that Nebuchadnezzar his _⌊predecessor_⌋* had taken from the temple that was in Jerusalem, so that the king and his lords,* his wives and his concubines may drink from them. ³ Then they brought in the vessels of gold that they took from the temple, the house of God that was in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords,* his wives and his concubines drank from them. ⁴ They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood and stone.* ⁵ _⌊Immediately_⌋* _⌊human fingers_⌋* appeared and they wrote _⌊opposite_⌋* the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the palace of the king, and the king was watching* the palm of the hand that was writing.

¹¹ whoredom_⌋.* Wine and new wine _⌊take away the understanding_⌋.*

¹⁰ For like entangled thorns, and like their drink which is drunk, they will be consumed like fully dry chaff.

¹⁵ Woe to him who gives a drink to his neighbors, pouring out your wrath and also making them drunk in order to see their nakedness! ¹⁶ You will be sated with shame rather than glory. Drink also yourself, and expose yourself! The cup of the right hand of Yahweh will come around upon you and disgrace upon your glory.

¹⁶ "Behold, I am sending you out like sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

¹² And he also said to the one who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or wealthy neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and repayment come to you.

³⁴ "But take care for yourselves, lest your hearts are weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of daily life, and that day come upon you suddenly

¹³ Let us live decently, as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and licentiousness, not in strife and jealousy.

¹⁴ for everything made visible is light. Therefore it says,
Wake up, sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.*

¹⁸ And do not be drunk with wine (in which is dissipation), but be filled by the Spirit,

⁷ For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. ⁸ But because* we are of the day, we must be sober, by* putting on the breastplate of faith and love and as a helmet the hope of salvation,

²⁸ Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart.

²² _⌊May God severely punish the enemies of David_⌋* and again do thus if I leave behind _⌊anything that is his_⌋* until the morning, not even _⌊one male_⌋!"*

²¹ Sounds of terror are in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come against him. ²² _⌊He cannot trust that he will return_⌋* from darkness, and he himself* is destined for the sword.

²⁹ _⌊And_⌋* in the middle of the night, Yahweh struck all of the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh sitting on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the prison house and every firstborn of an animal.

⁹ You must watch; if it goes up by the way of its territory to Beth Shemesh, he has caused this great disaster to come on us. But if not, then we will know his hand has not struck us; it was by chance that this happened to us.

¹⁰ And David said, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* _⌊certainly_⌋* Yahweh will strike him, or his day will come and he will die, or he will go down in the battle and _⌊perish_⌋.*

⁷ _⌊Then the anger of Yahweh was kindled_⌋* against Uzza, and God struck him down there because of the indiscretion,* and he died there beside the ark of God.

⁵ Yahweh struck the king, and he was infected with a skin disease until the day of his death. He lived in a separate house, while Jotham the son of the king was over the house, governing the people of the land.

³⁵ It happened in that night that an angel of Yahweh went out, and he struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of Assyria. When they got up early in the morning, look! All of them were dead corpses.

¹⁵ So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turning of events from God, so that Yahweh might fulfill his word that he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.

²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down _⌊because_⌋* he did not give the glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and* died.

² "When long hair hangs loosely in Israel, when the people willingly offer themselves, bless Yahweh!

³² Then David said to Abigail, "Blessed be Yahweh the God of Israel who has sent you this day to meet me!

²⁸ When David heard this afterwards, he said: "I and my kingdom are innocent _⌊before Yahweh_⌋* forever for the blood of Abner the son of Ner. ²⁹ May the blood come down on the head of Joab and all the house of his father. _⌊May the house of Joab never lack_⌋* one with a bodily discharge or one with leprosy or one who grasps the distaff or one who falls by the sword or one who is lacking food."

⁴⁷ Yahweh lives! Blessed be my rock! May God, the rock of my salvation, be exalted! ⁴⁸ God does vengeance for me, bringing down peoples under me. ⁴⁹ He brings me out from my enemies, and from those who rose up against me you lift me up, and from men of violence you rescue me.

⁴⁴ Then the king said to Shimei, "You know all the evil which your heart knows, what you did to David my father. Now Yahweh will return the evil on your head,

¹⁰ And they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai, and the anger of the king was abated.

¹⁶ His trouble comes back on his head, and his violence comes down on his skull.

¹⁰ The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. ¹¹ And people* will say, "Surely there is a _⌊reward_⌋* for the righteous. Surely there is a God who judges in the land."*

²² He who finds a wife* finds good, and he will obtain favor from Yahweh.

¹⁴ A house and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, but from Yahweh comes a woman* who is prudent.

²³ For Yahweh will plead their case and despoil those who despoil them of life.*

³⁰ Charm* is deceit and beauty* is vain;* but a woman who fears Yahweh shall be praised.

⁸ _⌊We have a little sister_⌋,* _⌊and she does not yet have any breasts_⌋.* What should we do for our sister _⌊on the day when she is betrothed_⌋?**

⁵⁸ O Lord, you have pleaded for _⌊my cause_⌋,* you have redeemed my life. ⁵⁹ You have seen my injustice, O Yahweh; judge my case. ⁶⁰ You have seen all their vengeance, all there plans against me.

⁶ Therefore, Look! I am going to hedge her path* _⌊with thorns_⌋,* and I will build a stone wall, a stone wall against her, and she will not find her paths. ⁷ Then she will pursue _⌊her lovers_⌋,* but she will not overtake them; she will seek them and not find them; and she will say, "I will go and return to my first husband because it was better for me then than now."

⁹ I will bear the rage of Yahweh, for I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause and executes my justice. He will bring me out to the light; I will see his righteousness.

⁷ Now we pray to God that you not do wrong in any way, not that we are seen as approved, but that you do what is good, even though we are seen as though unqualified.

²³ Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete, blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

¹⁸ The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will save me for his heavenly kingdom, to whom be the glory _⌊forever and ever_⌋*. Amen.

¹ After these things I heard something like the loud sound of a great crowd in heaven saying,
"Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, ² because his judgments are true and righteous, because he has passed judgment on the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality, and has avenged the blood of his slaves _⌊shed by_⌋* her hand!" ³ And a second time they said,
"Hallelujah!"
And her smoke goes up _⌊forever and ever_⌋*. ⁴ And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who is seated on the throne, saying,

³⁷ And my master made me swear, saying, 'Do not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I am living. ³⁸ But you shall go to the house of my father, and to my family, and you shall take a wife for my son.'

⁴ Let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest under the tree.

¹³ And she said, "May I find favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and have spoken _⌊kindly to your servant_⌋,* and I am not one of your servants."

³³ Fear of Yahweh is the instruction of the wise, and before honor comes humility.

¹² In the presence of destruction, the heart* of a man will be haughty, but in the presence of honor, humble.

³ because he* knew that the Father had given him all things into his* hands, and that he had come forth from God and was going away to God, ⁴ he got up from the dinner and took off his* outer clothing, and taking a towel, tied it* around himself. ⁵ Then he poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them* dry with the towel _⌊which he had tied around himself_⌋.*

¹⁰ being well-attested by good works, if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality, if she has washed the feet of the saints, if she has helped those who are oppressed, if she has devoted herself to every good work.

⁶¹ And Rebekah and her maidservants arose, and they mounted the camels and _⌊followed_⌋* the man. And the servant took Rebekah and left. ⁶² Now Isaac was coming from the direction of Beer-Lahai-Roi. And he was living in the land of the Negev. ⁶³ And Isaac went out to meditate in the field _⌊early in the evening_⌋,* and he lifted up his eyes and saw—behold, camels were coming. ⁶⁴ And Rebekah lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac. And she got down from the camel. ⁶⁵ And she said to the servant, "Who is this man walking around in the field to meet us?" And the servant said, "That is my master." And she took her* veil and covered herself. ⁶⁶ And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. ⁶⁷ And Isaac brought her to the tent of Sarah his mother. And he took Rebekah, and she became his wife. And Isaac loved her and was comforted after the death of his mother.

¹⁰ Hear, O daughter, and _⌊discern_⌋* and incline your ear, and forget your people and your father's house. ¹¹ Let the king desire your beauty.* Because he is your lord, therefore* bow down to him.

²⁴ Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cling to his wife, and they shall be as one flesh.

⁵⁶ Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah,

³ David settled with Achish in Gath, he and his men, each with his household.* David took along his two wives Ahinoam _⌊from Jezreel_⌋* and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

² And sons were born to David in Hebron; his firstborn was Amnon by Ahinoam _⌊from Jezreel_⌋*.

¹³ David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem after he came from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to him. ¹⁴ These are the names of the ones born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua and Shobab and Nathan and Solomon; ¹⁵ Ibhar and Elishua and Nepheg and Japhia; ¹⁶ Elishama and Eliada and Eliphelet.

⁵ and said, 'On account of this a man will leave his* father and his* mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?*

⁸ He said to them, "Moses, with reference to your hardness of heart, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not like this.

²⁰ Now Saul's daughter Michal loved David, so they told Saul, and the matter _⌊pleased him_⌋.*

²⁷ And David got up, and he and his men went and struck down two hundred men of the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and _⌊they presented the full number_⌋* to become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him Michal his daughter as his wife.

¹⁴ Then David sent messengers to Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul, saying, "Give me my wife Michal whom I betrothed to myself* for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines."

³⁰ Daughter of Gallim, cry out with your voice; Laishah, listen! _⌊Anathoth is poor_⌋.*
