¹ Now the Philistines assembled all their forces at Aphek, and Israel was encamped at the spring that is in Jezreel. ² The rulers of the Philistines were passing on according to hundreds and thousands, David and his men passing on at the rear with Achish. ³ Then the commanders of the Philistines said, "What are these Hebrews doing here?" And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, "Is this not David, the servant of Saul, the king of Israel, who has been with me _⌊for days and years_⌋?* I have not found anything threatening in him from the day of his desertion until this day!" ⁴ But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him and they said to him, "Send the man back so that he might return to his place where you have assigned him! But he will not go down with us into the battle, so that he does not become an adversary to us in the battle. By what could this fellow make himself favorable to his lord? Is it not with the heads of these men? ⁵ Is this not David about whom they sing in the dances, saying,
'Saul has killed his thousands, but David his ten thousands'?" ⁶ So Achish called David and said to him, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* certainly you were honest, and _⌊I am pleased to have you marching with me_⌋* in the campaign.* For I have not found any wrong in you from the day you came to me until this day, but in the eyes of the rulers, you are not good. ⁷ So then, return and go in peace, so that you do not do _⌊something that displeases_⌋* the rulers of the Philistines." ⁸ Then David said to Achish, "But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant from the day that I _⌊entered your service_⌋* until this day, that I should not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?" ⁹ And Achish answered and said to David, "I know that you are good in my eyes, like an angel of God! However, the commanders of the Philistines have said, 'He must not go up with us into the battle.' ¹⁰ So then, rise early in the morning, you and the servants of your lord who came with you. When you rise early in the morning and it is light enough for you, leave. ¹¹ So David set out early, he and his men, to leave in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines, but the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

³³ Then all the Midianites,* Amalekites,* and the people of the east gathered together and crossed the Jordan; and they camped in the valley of Jezreel.

¹ And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek.

¹ _⌊Now_⌋* in those days the Philistines gathered their forces for war to fight against Israel. So Achish said to David, "Certainly you realize that you must go out with me in the army, you and your men." ² David said to Achish, "Very well, you will know what your servant can do." Achish said to David, "Very well, I will make you _⌊my bodyguard_⌋* for life."

⁴ Then the Philistines assembled and came and encamped at Shunem, so Saul assembled all Israel, and they encamped at Gilboa.

⁴⁵ _⌊In no time_⌋* the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was heavy rain. Ahab rode and he went to Jezreel, ⁴⁶ but the hand of Yahweh was on Elijah; he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab as one comes to Jezreel.

³⁰ Then those who remained fled to Aphek, to the city, and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who had remained, so Ben-Hadad fled and went to the innermost rooms of the city.

¹ It happened after these things that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel beside the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

²³ Moreover, concerning Jezebel, Yahweh has said, 'The dogs will eat Jezebel in the outer rampart of Jezreel.'

³⁰ When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it, so she painted her eyes with black eye paint and adorned her head and looked through the window.

³⁶ They returned and told him, and he said, "This is the word of Yahweh which he spoke by the hand of his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 'On the plot of ground of Jezreel, the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel.'"

⁴ And Yahweh said to him, "_⌊Name him_⌋* Jezreel;* because in a little while _⌊I will punish_⌋* the house of Jehu* for the blood* of Jezreel,* and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.* ⁵ _⌊On that day_⌋* I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel." ⁶ And she conceived again and bore a daughter, and he* said to him,
"_⌊Name her_⌋* Lo-ruhamah,* for I will no longer have pity on the house of Israel or _⌊forgive them_⌋.* ⁷ But I will have pity on the house of Judah and I will save them by Yahweh their God, and will not deliver them by bow, sword, war, horses, or horsemen. ⁸ And when she had weaned Lo-ruhamah,* she conceived and bore a son. ⁹ And he* said, "_⌊Name him_⌋* Lo-ammi,* for you are not my people and I am not your God.* ¹⁰ * The number of the children of Israel will be like the sand of the sea that cannot be measured or counted; and in the place where it is said to them, "You are not my people," it will be said to them, "Children of the living God." ¹¹ Then the children of Judah and Israel will be gathered together, and they will appoint for themselves one head; and _⌊they will take possession of_⌋* the land, for great is the day of Jezreel.*

³ from the Shihor, which is _⌊east of Egypt_⌋,* up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites,* Ashdodites,* Ashkelonites,* Gittites,* Ekronites,* and the Avvim.

⁸ So they sent and gathered all the rulers of the Philistines to them, and they asked, "What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?" And they said, "Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around toward Gath." So they moved the ark of the God of Israel to Gath. ⁹ After they moved it, the hand of Yahweh was against the city, causing a very great confusion, and he struck the men of the city _⌊from the youngest to the oldest_⌋,* causing tumors* to break out on them. ¹⁰ So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But when the ark of God came to Ekron, the Ekronites cried out, saying, "They have brought around the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our* people!" ¹¹ So they sent and gathered all the rulers of the Philistines, and they said, "Send away the ark of the God of Israel and let it return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people." For a _⌊deadly confusion_⌋* was throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

⁴ And they said, "What is the guilt offering that we should return to him?" They said, "The number of the rulers of the Philistines is five. Therefore send five gold tumors* and five gold mice, because one plague was on all of you and all your rulers.

⁶ So Achish called David and said to him, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* certainly you were honest, and _⌊I am pleased to have you marching with me_⌋* in the campaign.* For I have not found any wrong in you from the day you came to me until this day, but in the eyes of the rulers, you are not good. ⁷ So then, return and go in peace, so that you do not do _⌊something that displeases_⌋* the rulers of the Philistines."

²⁸ Please forgive the transgression of your female servant, because Yahweh will certainly make a lasting house* for my lord, because my lord is fighting the battles of Yahweh, and evil will not be found in you _⌊as long as you live_⌋.*

⁷ The number of days that David lived in the countryside of the Philistines was one year and four months.

⁵ Then these men _⌊said_⌋,* "We will not find any pretext* against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God."

⁶ So when they saw him, the chief priests and the officers shouted, saying, "Crucify! Crucify!" Pilate said to them, "You take him and crucify him!* For I do not find a basis for an accusation against him."

¹⁷ Pay back no one evil for evil. Take thought for what is good in the sight of all people.

¹⁶ But do so with courtesy and respect, having a good conscience, so that in the things in which you are slandered, the ones who malign your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.

²¹ The Hebrews who had been for the Philistines _⌊previously_⌋,* who had gone up with them into the camp all around, even they _⌊joined the Israelites_⌋* who were with Saul and Jonathan.

⁶ So Achish gave him Ziklag on that day. (Therefore, Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah until this day.)

¹⁹ And some Manassites deserted to David when he came with the Philistines to the battle against Saul, but he did not help them, for the rulers of the Philistines sent him away upon counsel, saying, "He will desert to his master Saul at the cost of our heads."

⁸ And the master praised the dishonest manager, because he had acted shrewdly. For the sons of this age are shrewder than the sons of light with regard to their own generation.*

⁶ _⌊When they were coming back_⌋* after David had returned from striking down the Philistine, the women went out from all the cities of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul with tambourines, with joy, and with three-stringed instruments. ⁷ And the women sang as they danced, and they said,
"Saul has struck down his thousands, but David his ten thousands!"

¹¹ The servants of Achish said to him, "Is not this David the king of the land? Is it not for this one that they sang in the dances, saying, 'Saul killed his thousands, but David his ten thousands?'"

¹⁴ He who blesses his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning, a curse will be reckoned to him.

⁶ And Abram said to Sarai, "Look, your servant is _⌊under your authority_⌋.* Do to her that which is good in your eyes." And Sarai mistreated her, and she* fled from her presence.

¹⁷ who will go out before them and will come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so the community of Yahweh will not be like a flock that does not have a shepherd."

²⁰ Yahweh your God, you shall revere him, you shall serve him, and to him you shall cling, and by his name you shall swear.

³⁰ Phinehas the priest, the leaders of the congregation, and the heads of the clans* of Israel who were with him heard the words that the descendants* of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh spoke, and _⌊they were satisfied_⌋.*

³ Then David _⌊took an oath_⌋* again and said, "Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thought, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he worry.' But _⌊as Yahweh lives_⌋* and _⌊as your soul lives_⌋,* surely there is merely a step between me and death!"

⁸ Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites and the Girzites and the Amalekites, for they had been living in the land for a long time _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Shur and _⌊as far as_⌋* the land of Egypt. ⁹ So David struck the land and did not leave a man or a woman alive; he took the sheep,* the cattle, the donkeys, the camels, and the clothing. Then he returned and came to Achish. ¹⁰ And Achish said, "Against whom have you raided today?" David said, "Against the Negev of Judah and against the Negev of the Jerahmeelites and against the Negev of the Kenites." ¹¹ And David did not leave alive a man or a woman to bring them back to Gath, thinking,* "So that they will not report about us, saying, 'David did thus and so.'" Thus was his practice all the days that he lived in the countryside of the Philistines. ¹² And Achish trusted David, saying, "_⌊He has made himself utterly hated_⌋* among his people in Israel, and he will be my servant forever."

¹⁰ Then Saul swore to her by Yahweh, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* _⌊you will not be punished_⌋* for this thing."

³ Then the commanders of the Philistines said, "What are these Hebrews doing here?" And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, "Is this not David, the servant of Saul, the king of Israel, who has been with me _⌊for days and years_⌋?* I have not found anything threatening in him from the day of his desertion until this day!"

²⁵ You know that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you. He came to learn about your going out and coming in and to know all which you are doing."

²⁷ Your sitting, your going out, and your coming in I know, and your raging against me.

⁸ Yahweh will protect your going out and your coming in from now until forever.

²⁸ And I know your sitting down and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging _⌊against_⌋* me.

¹⁶ Whoever blesses himself in the land shall bless himself by the God of trustworthiness, and the one who swears an oath in the land shall swear by the God of trustworthiness, because the former troubles are forgotten, and they are hidden from my eyes.

¹⁶ _⌊And then_⌋,* if they diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, '_⌊as Yahweh lives_⌋,'* even as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they will live in the midst of my people.

¹⁶ In the same way let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

¹² maintaining your good conduct among the Gentiles, so that in the things in which they slander you as evildoers, by seeing your good deeds they may glorify God on the day of visitation.

³⁴ Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, "I have sinned because I did not know that you were standing to meet me in the road. Now, _⌊if it is displeasing to you_⌋,* I will turn back."

³ Here I am! Testify against me before Yahweh and before his anointed one! Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I exploited? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe, that I may shut my eyes _⌊regarding_⌋* him?-then I will restore it to you."

²⁹ David replied, "What have I done now? _⌊I merely asked a question_⌋!*

⁸ So you must show loyal love to your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you. But if there is guilt in me, then kill me yourself! But why should you bring me to your father?"

¹⁸ Then he said, "Why is my lord pursuing after his servant? For what have I done? And what evil is in my hand?

² David said to Achish, "Very well, you will know what your servant can do." Achish said to David, "Very well, I will make you _⌊my bodyguard_⌋* for life."

¹⁸ Then Hushai said to Absalom, "No, rather, whom Yahweh and this people and all the men of Israel have chosen, to him* I will be, and with him I will remain. ¹⁹ _⌊Furthermore_⌋,* for whom have I served? Is it not in the presence of his son that I have served before your father? _⌊So shall I serve you_⌋!"*

¹³ Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. ¹⁴ Turn from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it.

¹³ And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.*

⁴ But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him and they said to him, "Send the man back so that he might return to his place where you have assigned him! But he will not go down with us into the battle, so that he does not become an adversary to us in the battle. By what could this fellow make himself favorable to his lord? Is it not with the heads of these men?

¹⁷ Your servant also thought, 'May the word of my lord the king _⌊bring rest_⌋,* for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king, _⌊to sense what is good and what is bad_⌋.'* May Yahweh your God be with you."

²⁰ In order _⌊to change the situation_⌋,* your servant Joab did this thing. But my lord has wisdom, as the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all that is on the earth."

²⁷ But he slandered against your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king is like the angel of God; _⌊do as you see fit._⌋."*

¹⁴ And you did not despise or disdain what was a trial for you in my flesh, but you welcomed me like an angel of God, like Christ Jesus.

¹⁴ And Abraham called the name of that place "Yahweh _⌊will provide_⌋,"* _⌊for which reason_⌋* it is said today, "on the mountain of Yahweh _⌊it shall be provided_⌋."*

¹ _⌊Now_⌋* when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. When they attacked Ziklag, they burned it with fire. ² They took captive the women* who were in it, _⌊from the youngest to the oldest_⌋.* They did not kill anyone, but carried them off and went on their way.

²² _⌊Day in and day out_⌋* they came to David to help him until there was a great army, like the army of God.

²³ The steps of a man are established by Yahweh, and he takes pleasure in his way. ²⁴ Though he fall, he will not be cast headlong, for Yahweh supports him with his hand.

¹³ Temptation has not come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will also make a way out together with the temptation, so that you may be able to endure it.

⁹ then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to reserve the unrighteous to be punished at* the day of judgment,

⁴ (Now Jonathan the son of Saul had a son who was crippled in the feet. He was five years old when the message of Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel, and his nurse had picked him up and fled. It happened that as she was hurrying away to flee, he fell and became crippled. His name was Mephibosheth.)
