¹ The men of Kiriath Jearim came and brought up the ark of Yahweh, and they brought it to the house of Abinadab in Gibeah. They consecrated Eleazer his son to guard the ark of Yahweh. ² _⌊From_⌋* the day the ark stayed in Kiriath Jearim, _⌊days multiplied and became twenty years_⌋* while all the house of Israel mourned after Yahweh. ³ And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, "If with all your heart you are turning to Yahweh, remove the foreign gods and Ashtoreths* from your midst. Commit your hearts to Yahweh and serve him alone. Then he will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines." ⁴ So the _⌊Israelites_⌋* removed the Baals* and the Ashtoreths, and they served Yahweh alone. ⁵ Then Samuel said, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to Yahweh for you." ⁶ So they gathered to Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Yahweh. They fasted on that day and said there, "We have sinned against Yahweh!" So Samuel judged the _⌊Israelites_⌋* at Mizpah. ⁷ Now when the Philistines heard that the _⌊Israelites_⌋* had gathered at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the _⌊Israelites_⌋* heard of it, _⌊they were afraid of the Philistines_⌋.* ⁸ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to Samuel, "_⌊You must not cease_⌋* from crying out to Yahweh our God, so that he will deliver us from the hand of the Philistines." ⁹ So Samuel took a single _⌊nursing lamb_⌋* and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to Yahweh. Then Samuel cried out to Yahweh on behalf of Israel, and Yahweh answered him. ¹⁰ _⌊While_⌋* Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near for the battle against Israel. But Yahweh thundered against the Philistines with a great noise on that day and threw them into confusion so that they were defeated before Israel. ¹¹ Then the men of Israel went out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines and they struck them down as far as below Beth Car. ¹² So Samuel took a single stone and put it between Mizpah and Shen, and he named it Ebenezer and said, "Up to here Yahweh has helped us." ¹³ So the Philistines were subdued and they did not come into the territory of Israel again, and the hand of Yahweh was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. ¹⁴ The towns* which the Philistines had taken from Israel were returned to Israel from Ekron to Gath, and Israel delivered their territories from the hand of the Philistines. Then there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. ¹⁵ Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. ¹⁶ He used to go on the circuit _⌊from year to year_⌋.* He went around Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and he judged Israel in all these places. ¹⁷ Then _⌊he returned_⌋* to Ramah, because his house was there, and there he judged Israel, and he built an altar to Yahweh there.

¹⁴ Then the border changes direction and turns to the western side southward, from the mountain that _⌊is opposite_⌋* Beth-Horon to the south. _⌊It ends_⌋* at Kiriath Baal (that is, Kiriath Jearim), a town belonging to the descendants* of Judah. This is the western side.

²¹ So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath Jearim saying, "The Philistines have returned the ark of Yahweh. Come down and take it up to yourselves."

² David got up and went and all the people who were with him, from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God which is called the name, the name of Yahweh of hosts, _⌊upon which the cherubim sit_⌋.* ³ They loaded the ark of God on a new utility cart, and they carried it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Now Uzza and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new utility cart along. ⁴ So they brought it out from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill with the ark of God, and Ahio was going before the ark.

⁵ And David summoned all Israel from Shihor of Egypt up to Lebo-Hamath to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-Jearim. ⁶ And David and all Israel went up to Baalah, Kiriath-Jearim of Judah, to bring up from there the ark of Yahweh God who is enthroned between the cherubim, which is called the name. ⁷ And they carried the ark of God upon a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio were driving the cart.

⁶ Look, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found her in the fields of Jaar.*

¹¹ Depart, depart, go out from there! You must not touch any unclean thing. Go out from the midst of it, keep clean, you who carry the vessels of Yahweh.

⁴ And as the angel of Yahweh spoke these words to all the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* the people _⌊wept bitterly_⌋.*

¹³ Only acknowledge your guilt, that against Yahweh your God you have rebelled, and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every leafy tree, and you have not obeyed my voice,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh."

²² Return, O apostate* children, I will heal your backsliding. 'Look, we come to you, for you are Yahweh our God. ²³ Surely, an illusion comes from the hills, the turmoil on the mountains. Surely, in Yahweh our God is the salvation of Israel. ²⁴ But the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our ancestors* from our youth, their flocks, and their cattle, their sons and their daughters. ²⁵ Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us. For against Yahweh our God we have sinned, we and our ancestors,* from our youth and until this day. and we have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh our God.'

⁹ With weeping they will come, and with pleas for mercy I will bring them; I will let them walk by streams of water in a straight path. They will not stumble in it, for I have become to Israel a father, and Ephraim, he is my firstborn."

¹⁰ " 'I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants* of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication, and they will look to me whom they pierced, and they shall mourn over him, as one wails over an only child, and they will grieve bitterly over him as one grieves bitterly over a firstborn. ¹¹ On that day the wailing will be great in Jerusalem, like the wailing for Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.

⁴ Blessed are the ones who mourn, because they will be comforted.

¹⁰ For grief according to the will of God brings about a repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted, but worldly grief brings about death. ¹¹ For behold how much diligence this very thing, being grieved according to the will of God, has brought about in you: what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! In everything you have demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

² Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods that are in your midst and purify yourselves and change your garments.

¹³ "You shall fear Yahweh your God, and you shall serve him, and by his name you shall swear.

²⁰ Yahweh your God, you shall revere him, you shall serve him, and to him you shall cling, and by his name you shall swear.

⁴ You shall go after Yahweh your God, and him you shall revere, and his commandment you shall keep, and to his voice you shall listen, and him you shall serve, and to him you shall hold fast.

² and you return to Yahweh and you listen to his voice according to all that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* both you and your children,* with all your heart and with all your inner self,* ³ and Yahweh your God will restore your fortunes, and he will have compassion upon you, and _⌊he will again gather you together_⌋* from all the peoples where Yahweh your God scattered you there. ⁴ "Even if _⌊you are outcasts_⌋* at the end of the heavens, even from there Yahweh your God shall gather you, and from there _⌊he shall bring you back_⌋.* ⁵ And Yahweh your God will bring you to the land that your ancestors* had taken possession of,* and he will make you successful, and he will make you more numerous than your ancestors.* ⁶ "And Yahweh your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring to love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your inner self* _⌊so that you may live_⌋.* ⁷ And Yahweh your God will put all these curses on your enemies and _⌊on those who hate you_⌋,* on _⌊those who harassed you_⌋.* ⁸ And _⌊you will again listen_⌋* to the voice of Yahweh, and you will do all his commandments that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋.* ⁹ And Yahweh your God will make you prosperous _⌊in all your undertakings_⌋,* and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground _⌊abundantly_⌋,* for Yahweh _⌊will again rejoice_⌋* over you, just as he rejoiced over your ancestors.* ¹⁰ He will do this if you listen to* the voice of Yahweh your God by keeping his commandment and his statutes written in the scroll of this law and if you return to Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your inner self.*

¹⁴ "So now, revere Yahweh and serve him in sincerity and faithfulness; remove the gods that your ancestors* served beyond the river* and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh.

²³ He said, "Remove the foreign gods that are in your midst, and incline your hearts to Yahweh the God of Israel."

¹³ They abandoned Yahweh, and they served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

⁶ And again, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh. They served the Baals, the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, and the gods of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and Philistines; they abandoned Yahweh and did not serve him.

¹⁶ So they removed the foreign gods from their midst and served Yahweh; and _⌊he could no longer bear_⌋* the misery of Israel.

¹⁰ And they put his armor in the temple* of the Ashtoreth,* and they fastened his corpse to the wall of Beth Shan.

⁴⁸ if they return to you with all of their heart and with all of their soul in the land of their enemies who took them captive and they pray to you toward their land which you gave to their ancestors,* the city that you have chosen and the house that you* built for your name,

¹⁹ Now set your heart and mind to seek Yahweh your Go, and arise and build the sanctuary of Yahweh God, that the ark of the covenant of Yahweh and the holy vessels of God might be brought into the house built for the name of Yahweh.

⁹ "And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and a willing mind, for Yahweh searches all hearts and understands every plan and all thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you abandon him, he will reject you forever.

³ Nevertheless some good things have been found in regard to you, for you burned the Asherahs out of the land and set your heart to seek God."

¹⁹ everyone whose heart is set to seek God, Yahweh the God of his ancestors,* though not according to the cleansing for the sanctuary."

¹³ "If you yourself* direct your heart and stretch out your hands to him— ¹⁴ if iniquity* is in your hand, put it far away, and you must not let wickedness reside in your tents—

¹ To mortals belong the plans of the heart, but from Yahweh comes the answer of the tongue.

⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the man of sin his thoughts. And let him return to Yahweh, that* he may take pity on him, and to our God, for he will _⌊forgive manifold_⌋.*

³ For thus says Yahweh to the men* of Judah and to Jerusalem, "Break up for yourselves prepared virgin soil, and you must not sow among thornbushes. ⁴ Circumcise yourselves to Yahweh, and remove the foreskins of your hearts,* men* of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my wrath goes forth like the fire and burns, and there is no one who extinguishes it,* because of the evil of your deeds."

³¹ Throw _⌊away from yourselves_⌋* all of your transgressions that you committed,* and make _⌊for yourselves_⌋* a new heart and new spirit, and so why will you die, house of Israel?

¹ Come, let us return to Yahweh; because it is he who has torn, and he will heal us; he has struck us down and will bind us up. ² He will revive us after two days; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live in his presence.*

¹ Return to Yahweh your God, O Israel, for you have stumbled because of your sin.

¹² "And even now," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, and weeping, and wailing." ¹³ Rend your hearts* and not your garments, and return to Yahweh your God, because he is gracious and compassionate, _⌊slow to anger_⌋* and great in loyal love, and relenting from harm.

¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, "Go away, Satan, for it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"*

²⁴ "No one is able to serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You are not able to serve God and money.*

⁸ 'This people honors me with their* lips, but their heart is far, far away from me,

⁸ And Jesus answered and* said to him, "It is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'"*

²⁴ God is spirit, and the ones who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

¹¹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and _⌊they served_⌋* the Baals.

¹⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to Yahweh, "We have sinned; _⌊do to us accordingly as you see fit_⌋;* only please deliver us this day." ¹⁶ So they removed the foreign gods from their midst and served Yahweh; and _⌊he could no longer bear_⌋* the misery of Israel.

³³ because he has forsaken me, and they bowed down to Ashtoreth, the god of the Sidonians, to Chemosh, the god of Moab, and to Molech, the god of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* They did not walk in my ways to do right in my eyes, my ordinances, or my judgments, as did David his father.

³ Assyria will not save us; we will not ride on horses,* and we will say no more, "Our God," to the work of our hands because in you the fatherless child finds mercy.

⁸ O Ephraim, _⌊what have I to do_⌋* with idols? I myself have answered and looked after you.* I am like a luxuriant cypress; your fruit* comes from me.

¹ All the _⌊Israelites_⌋* went out, from Dan to Beersheba, including the land of Gilead, and they gathered as one body* to Yahweh at Mizpah.

²³ Also, as for me, far be it from me _⌊that I should sin_⌋* against Yahweh by ceasing to pray for you! I will instruct you in the good and righteous way.

²³ When all of the commanders of the troops heard, they and the men, that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seriah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

¹ On the twenty-fourth day of this month the _⌊Israelites_⌋* gathered in fasting, in sackcloths, and with soil on them.

¹⁶ gather the people, consecrate the assembly; assemble the elders, gather the children, even those who are breast-feeding; let the bridegroom come out from his private room, and the bride from her canopy.

⁴⁰ " 'But* when they confess their guilt and the guilt of their ancestors* in their infidelity that they displayed against me, and moreover that they went against me in hostility—

¹⁰ And the spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and Yahweh gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and _⌊he prevailed over_⌋* Cushan-Rishathaim.

¹⁰ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, saying, "We have sinned against you; we have abandoned our God and served the Baals."

¹⁵ But Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord. I am a woman _⌊deeply distressed_⌋,* but I have not drunk wine or strong drink. Rather, I have poured out my soul before Yahweh.

¹⁴ For _⌊we must certainly die_⌋,* and we are as the waters spilled to the ground which cannot be gathered. God will not take a life but devises plans for a banished person not to be cast out from him.

⁴⁷ and then they return their heart in the land where they have been taken captive and they return and plead to you in the land of their captivity, saying, 'We have sinned and we did wrong. We acted wickedly,'

³ Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek Yahweh. And he called for a fast through all Judah.

²¹ I proclaimed a fast there at the river Ahava to humble ourselves before our God in order to seek from him a safe journey for us, our children, and our possessions. ²² For I was ashamed to ask the king for troops and horses to protect us from enemies on the way because we said to the king, "the hand of our God is favorable to all who seek him, but his strength and anger are against all who forsake them." ²³ So we fasted and sought our God for this and he responded to our prayer.

⁵ At the evening offering I got up from my mourning posture and, with my garment and robe torn, I fell down on my knees and I spread out my palms to Yahweh my God ⁶ and said, "My God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God. For our sins have risen above our heads and our guilt has grown up to the heavens. ⁷ From the days of our ancestors* until this day we have been in great guilt, and because of our sins we ourselves, our kings, and our priests have been handed into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to utter shame, as it is this day. ⁸ But now for a brief moment mercy has been shown by Yahweh our God, who left behind for us a remnant, and given us security in his holy place—for our God to brighten our eyes and to give us brief relief in our bondage. ⁹ For we are slaves and in our bondage our God did not forsake us, and he has extended to us loyal love in the presence of the kings of Persia, to give to us deliverance* and to set up the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judea and Jerusalem. ¹⁰ "And now our God what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,

¹ On the twenty-fourth day of this month the _⌊Israelites_⌋* gathered in fasting, in sackcloths, and with soil on them. ² Those of the seed of Israel separated themselves from all of the foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors.* ³ They stood up in their place and read from the book of the law* of Yahweh their God for a fourth part of the day, and for a fourth they were confessing and worshiping Yahweh their God.

²⁷ Therefore you gave them into the hand of their enemy, and they brought trouble to them. Then in the time of their trouble they cried out to you, and you heard from the heavens, and according to your great compassions, you gave them saviors, and you saved them from the hand of their enemies.

²⁰ My friends scorn me; my eye pours out tears to God,

²⁷ "He will sing to men, and he will say, 'I have sinned and have perverted what is right, and it was not paid back to me.

⁴ "Look, I am insignificant. What shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.

⁶ Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

⁶ I am weary with my groaning; _⌊I flood_⌋* my bed every night. With my tears _⌊I drench_⌋* my couch.

³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation. There is no health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For my iniquities have passed over my head; like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds start to stink; they rot because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am bowed down; I am bent over greatly. All the day I go about mourning. ⁷ For my loins are full of burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am faint and crushed greatly; I groan because of the roaring of my heart.

³ My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"

⁸ Trust him at all times, O people; pour out before him your heart. God is a refuge for us. Selah

⁶ We have sinned along with our ancestors.* We have committed iniquity; we have incurred guilt.

¹³⁶ Streams of water flow down from my eyes, because people do not heed your law.

¹³ Only acknowledge your guilt, that against Yahweh your God you have rebelled, and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every leafy tree, and you have not obeyed my voice,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh." ¹⁴ "Return, apostate* children," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "For _⌊I am your master_⌋,* and I will take you one from a city and two from a clan,* and I will bring you to Zion.

¹ * _⌊Oh that my head were waters_⌋,* and my eyes a fountain of tears, so that I might weep day and night, for the slain of the daughter of my people.

¹⁹ For after my turning back I repented, and after coming to understand I struck my thigh. I was ashamed and also humiliated, because I bore the disgrace of my youth.'

¹¹ My eyes have _⌊spent all their tears_⌋;* _⌊my stomach_⌋* is in torment, _⌊my heart_⌋* is poured out on the earth because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because child and babe faint in the public squares of a city.

¹⁸ Their heart cried to the Lord, "O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears stream down like a river; day and night, do not give yourself relief, do not give your eyes rest. ¹⁹ "Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches; pour out your heart like water, before the face of the Lord. Lift to him your hands, for the life of your children, who faint in starvation, at the head of all streets."

⁴⁹ My eyes have poured down unceasingly without respite,

⁴ Will you judge them? Will you judge them, son of man?* Make known to them the detestable things of their ancestors.*

³ Then I turned my face to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and pleas for mercy,* in fasting and in sackcloth and ashes. ⁴ And I prayed to Yahweh my God, and I made confession and I said, "O Lord, the great and awesome God, keeping the covenant and loyal love with those who love him and with those who keep his commandments, ⁵ we have sinned and we have done wrong and we acted wickedly and we rebelled and have been turning aside from your commandments and from your ordinances.

¹² "And even now," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, and weeping, and wailing."

¹ And the word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time, saying, ² "Get up! Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to it the message that I am telling you." ³ So Jonah got up* and went to Nineveh according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was _⌊an extraordinarily great city_⌋*—a journey of three days across.* ⁴ And Jonah began to go into the city a journey of one day, and he cried out and said, "Forty more days and Nineveh will be demolished!"* ⁵ And the people of Nineveh believed in God, and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth—from the greatest of them _⌊to the least important_⌋.* ⁶ And the news reached the king of Nineveh, and he rose from his throne and removed his royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in the ashes. ⁷ And he had a proclamation made, and said,
"In Nineveh, by a decree of the king and his nobles:
"No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything! They must not eat, and they must not drink water! ⁸ And the human beings and the animals must be covered with sackcloth! And they must call forcefully to God, and each must turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his* hands. ⁹ Who knows? God may relent and change his mind and turn _⌊from his blazing anger_⌋* _⌊so that_⌋* we will not perish." ¹⁰ And God saw their deeds—that they turned from their evil ways—and God changed his mind about the evil that he had said he would bring upon them, and he did not do it.*

¹⁸ I will set out and* go to my father and will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and _⌊in your sight_⌋!*

¹⁰ And Pharaoh approached, and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* lifted their eyes, and there were the Egyptians traveling after them! And they were very afraid, and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh.

⁶ When the men of Israel saw that it was _⌊too difficult_⌋* for them, because the army was hard pressed, the people hid themselves in the caves, in the thorn bushes, in the cliffs, in the vaults* and in the wells.

¹¹ When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and very afraid.

¹⁹ Then all the people said to Samuel, "Pray for your servants to Yahweh your God so that we will not die, because we have added to all our sins by requesting a king for ourselves." ²⁰ And Samuel said to the people, "Do not fear! You have done all this evil; only do not turn aside from _⌊following_⌋* Yahweh. But you must serve Yahweh with all your heart. ²¹ And do not turn aside after the triviality,* which have no value and cannot deliver, for they are triviality. ²² For Yahweh will not forsake his people for the sake of his great name, because Yahweh has decided to make you his own people. ²³ Also, as for me, far be it from me _⌊that I should sin_⌋* against Yahweh by ceasing to pray for you! I will instruct you in the good and righteous way. ²⁴ Only fear Yahweh and serve him faithfully with all of your heart. For consider _⌊what great things he has done for you_⌋.*

⁴ Maybe Yahweh your God heard the words of Rabshakeh whom the king of Assyria, his master, has sent to taunt the living God, and he will rebuke the words that Yahweh your God hears. And you must lift up a prayer for the benefit of the remnant that is found.'"

¹ For the sake of Zion I will not be silent, and for the sake of Jerusalem I will not maintain a quiet attitude, until her righteousness goes out like the bright light, and her salvation burns like a torch.

⁶ I have appointed watchmen upon your walls, Jerusalem; all day and all night they shall never be silent. You who profess Yahweh have no rest. ⁷ And you must not give him rest until he establishes, and until he _⌊makes_⌋* Jerusalem _⌊an object of praise_⌋* in the earth.

¹⁶ Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much.

²⁶ and build an altar to Yahweh your God on the top of this stronghold in the proper arrangement, and take a second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah* that you will cut down.

²⁸ When the men of the city got up early in the morning, look, the altar of Baal and the Asherah* that was beside it were cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built.

¹⁴ The utility cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh and stopped there where there was a large stone. They split the wood of the utility cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering to Yahweh. ¹⁵ Then the Levites took down the ark of Yahweh and the container* that was beside it, in which were the gold objects, and they set them on the large stone.* Then the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings, and they _⌊made_⌋* sacrifices to Yahweh on that day.

¹⁷ Then _⌊he returned_⌋* to Ramah, because his house was there, and there he judged Israel, and he built an altar to Yahweh there.

¹² They answered them and said, "There is. Look, he is just in front of you! Hurry now, because he has come to the town today, because there is a sacrifice for the people today at the high place.

⁸ Then you will go down before me to Gilgal. Look, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings _⌊and to make_⌋* fellowship offerings. You must wait seven days until I come to you. Then I will let you know what you should do."

² But Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears, he will kill me." Yahweh said, "You must take a heifer from the herd _⌊with you_⌋,* and you must say, 'I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.'

³⁰ Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me," so all the people came closer to him. He repaired the altar of Yahweh that had been destroyed. ³¹ Elijah took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of God came, saying, "Israel shall be your name." ³² With them, he built an altar in the name of Yahweh, and he made a trench _⌊which would have held_⌋* about two seahs of seed, all around the altar. ³³ And he arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces, and placed it on the wood.* Then he said, "Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood." ³⁴ He said, "Do it again!" They did it again. He said, "Do it a third time!" So they did it a third time. ³⁵ The water went all around the altar, and the trench also was filled with water. ³⁶ It happened at the offering of the evening oblation, Elijah the prophet went near, and he said, "O Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel; let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and that I have done all of these things by your words. ³⁷ Answer me, O Yahweh, answer me; that this people may know that you, O Yahweh, are God and that you have turned their hearts back again." ³⁸ Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and it consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust; and the water which was in the trench it licked up!

¹⁵ And call me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will glorify me."

⁶ Moses and Aaron were among his priests; Samuel also was among those who called on his name. They called to Yahweh, and he answered them.

¹ Then Yahweh said to me, "Even if Moses and Samuel stood _⌊before me_⌋,* my heart would not be to this people. Send them away from my _⌊sight_⌋,* and let them go out.

²³ And Moses stretched out his staff to the heavens, and Yahweh gave thunder* and hail, and fire went to the earth, and Yahweh caused hail to rain on the land of Egypt. ²⁴ And there was hail, and fire was flashing back and forth in the midst of the very severe hail, the like of which was not in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation. ²⁵ And the hail struck in all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, from human to animal, and the hail struck all the vegetation of the field and smashed every tree of the field.

³ And he shall say to them, 'Hear, Israel, you are near _⌊today_⌋* to the battle against your enemies; _⌊do not lose heart_⌋;* you shall not be afraid, and you shall not panic, and you shall not be terrified _⌊because of them_⌋,* ⁴ for Yahweh your God is going with you to fight for you against your enemies to help you.'

¹⁰ And Yahweh threw them into panic before Israel, who* struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.

¹⁵ And Yahweh threw Sisera and all his chariots and army into confusion* before _⌊the edge of Barak's sword_⌋;* and Sisera dismounted from his chariot and fled on foot.

⁸ God chose new leaders,* then war was at the gates; a small shield or a spear was not seen among forty thousand in Israel.

²⁰ The stars fought from heaven; from their courses they fought against Sisera.

¹⁰ Yahweh will shatter* his adversaries;* he will thunder against them in the heavens. Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king and will exalt the might of his anointed one.

¹⁷ Is the wheat harvest not today? I will call out to Yahweh so that he still sends thunder and rain, so that you will know and will see that your wickedness is great that you have done in the eyes of Yahweh by asking for a king for yourselves."

¹⁴ Yahweh thundered from heaven, and the Most High _⌊uttered his voice_⌋.* ¹⁵ He sent arrows and he scattered them, lightning, and he directed them.

¹¹ He made darkness his hiding place; all about him his covering was a darkness of waters, _⌊thick clouds_⌋.* ¹² From the brightness before him his clouds passed over with hail and coals of fire. ¹³ And Yahweh thundered from the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice with hail and coals of fire. ¹⁴ And he shot his arrows and scattered them,* and many lightning bolts and routed them.

¹⁶ Waters saw you, O God; waters saw you and they trembled. Surely the deeps shook. ¹⁷ The clouds poured out water. The skies _⌊thundered_⌋.* Your arrows also _⌊flew about_⌋.* ¹⁸ The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind;* lightnings lit the world; the earth shook and quaked.

³ Fire goes before him, and devours his enemies round about. ⁴ His lightnings light the world; the earth sees and trembles.

⁶ And he answered and said to me, "This is the word of Yahweh to Zerubbabel, saying, 'Not by strength and not by power, but only by my Spirit,' says Yahweh of hosts.

¹⁸ And there were lightnings and sounds and thunders, and there was a great earthquake, as has not happened from the time humanity has been on the earth—so great in this way was the earthquake. ¹⁹ And the great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And Babylon the great was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of his furious wrath.* ²⁰ And every island fled, and mountains were not found. ²¹ And large hailstones, weighing about a hundred pounds,* came down from the sky upon people, and the people blasphemed God because of the plague of hail, because the plague of it was very great.

¹⁴ And Abraham called the name of that place "Yahweh _⌊will provide_⌋,"* _⌊for which reason_⌋* it is said today, "on the mountain of Yahweh _⌊it shall be provided_⌋."*

¹⁸ And Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a stone pillar, and poured oil on top of it. ¹⁹ And he called the name of that place Bethel; however, the name of the city was formerly Luz.

⁴⁵ And Jacob took a stone and set it up as a stone pillar. ⁴⁶ And Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather stones." And they took stones and made a pile of stones, and they ate there by the pile of stones. ⁴⁷ And Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha,* but Jacob called it Galeed.* ⁴⁸ Then Laban said, "This pile of stones is a witness between me and you today." Therefore its name is called Galeed,* ⁴⁹ and Mizpah,* because he said, "Yahweh watch between me and you when _⌊we are out of sight of each other_⌋.* ⁵⁰ If you mistreat my daughters, and if you take wives besides my daughters, when there is no man with us, see—God is a witness between me and you." ⁵¹ And Laban said to Jacob, "See, this pile of stones, and see the pillar that I have set up between me and you. ⁵² This pile of stones is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass beyond this pile of stones to you, and that you will not pass beyond this pile of stones and this pillar to me intending harm.

¹⁴ And Jacob set up a pillar at the place where God had spoken with him, a pillar of stone. And he poured out a drink offering upon it, and poured oil on it.

¹⁵ And Moses built an altar, and he called its name Yahweh Is My Banner.

⁹ Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests carrying the ark of the covenant stood, and they are there to this day.

²⁰ And those twelve stones that they took from the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. ²¹ And he said to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* "When your children ask in the future _⌊their parents_⌋,* '_⌊What is the meaning of these stones_⌋?'* ²² you will let your children know by saying, 'Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.' ²³ For Yahweh your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you, until you had crossed, just as Yahweh your God did to the _⌊Red Sea_⌋,* which he dried up before us until we had crossed over, ²⁴ so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of Yahweh is strong, so that you may fear Yahweh your God _⌊forever_⌋."*

²⁶ Then Joshua wrote these words in a scroll of the law of God, and he took a large stone and set it up there under a large tree, which is at the shrine of Yahweh. ²⁷ And Joshua said to all the people, "Look, this stone will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of Yahweh that he spoke with us. It will be as a witness against you, so that you do not deny your God."

¹ And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek.

¹ Now the Philistines had captured* the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

⁶ Upon you I have leaned _⌊from birth_⌋.* It was you who _⌊took_⌋* me from the womb of my mother. My praise is of you continually.

¹⁷ O God, you have taught me from my youth, and up to now I have proclaimed your wonderful deeds.

¹⁹ On that day, there will be an altar for Yahweh in in the middle of the land of Egypt, and a stone pillar for Yahweh at her border.

³ "Listen to me, house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel who have been carried from the belly, who have been carried from the womb: ⁴ Even* to your old age I am he; even* to your advanced age I myself will support you. I myself have made you, and I myself will carry you, and I myself will support you, and I will save you.

²² Therefore I have experienced help from God until this day, and* I stand here testifying to both small and great, saying nothing except what both the prophets and Moses have said were going to happen,

¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a risk of death, and will deliver us, in whom we have put our hope that he will also deliver us again,

¹ And again, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and Yahweh gave them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

⁵ because you will conceive and bear a son. No razor _⌊will touch_⌋* his head, because the boy will be a _⌊Nazirite of God_⌋* _⌊from birth_⌋.* And it is he who will begin to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines."

¹ Saul was thirty* _⌊years old_⌋* at the beginning of his reign, and he reigned forty-two years* over Israel. ² He chose for himself three thousand from Israel. Two thousand of these were with Saul at Micmash in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah in Benjamin. He sent away the rest of the people, each to his tent. ³ Jonathan defeated the garrison of the Philistines that was at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, "Let the Hebrews hear!" ⁴ And all Israel did hear, saying, "Saul has defeated the garrison of the Philistines; and also, Israel has become a stench among the Philistines!" So the people were called out after Saul at Gilgal. ⁵ And the Philistines assembled to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and an army as numerous as sand which is on the seashore. And they came up and encamped at Micmash, east of Beth Aven.

⁶ So Jonathan said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Come, let us go over to the garrisons of these uncircumcised; perhaps Yahweh will act for us, for there is no hindrance for Yahweh to save by many or by few." ⁷ And _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* said, "Do all that is in your heart _⌊that you are inclined to do_⌋.* _⌊I am with you all of the way_⌋!* ⁸ Then Jonathan said, "Look, we are about to go over to the men; and we will show ourselves to them. ⁹ If they say to us: 'Wait until we reach you,' _⌊then we will stand as we are_⌋* and not go up to them. ¹⁰ But if they say, 'Come up to us,' then we will go up, for Yahweh has given them into our hand, and this will be the sign for us." ¹¹ So the two of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines, and the Philistines said, "The Hebrews are coming out from the holes in which they have hidden themselves." ¹² Then the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Come up to us and we will show you something!" Then Jonathan said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Come up after me, for Yahweh has given them into the hand of Israel!" ¹³ So Jonathan went up on his hands and his feet, with _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* after him. They fell before Jonathan and then _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* would kill them after him. ¹⁴ So was the first attack in which Jonathan and _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* killed about twenty men within about half of a furrow in an acre of an open field. ¹⁵ Then there was terror* in the camp, in the open field, and among all the army of the garrison. Even the _⌊raiders_⌋* trembled. The earth shook, and it became _⌊a very great panic_⌋.* ¹⁶ And the lookouts of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin saw _⌊that_⌋* the multitude _⌊surged back and forth_⌋.*

²⁰ Then Saul and all the troops who were with him were assembled on command and came up to the battle, and look! Each Philistine's sword was against his friend; and there was a very great confusion. ²¹ The Hebrews who had been for the Philistines _⌊previously_⌋,* who had gone up with them into the camp all around, even they _⌊joined the Israelites_⌋* who were with Saul and Jonathan. ²² All the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, so even they pursued them closely in the battle. ²³ So on that day Yahweh delivered Israel, and the battle shifted to Beth Aven.

⁴⁹ Then David put his hand into the bag and took a stone from it and slung it. He struck the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. ⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with the sling and with the stone, and he struck down the Philistine and killed him, but there was no sword in David's hand. ⁵¹ Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it from its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. ⁵² The men of Israel and Judah got up, raised the war cry, and pursued the Philistines _⌊as far as_⌋* the valley* and up to the gates of Ekron. So the slain of the Philistines fell on the way* to Shaaraim up to Gath and as far as Ekron. ⁵³ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* returned from pursuing the Philistines and plundered their camp.

³ (Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him, and they had buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had expelled the mediums* and the soothsayers from the land.) ⁴ Then the Philistines assembled and came and encamped at Shunem, so Saul assembled all Israel, and they encamped at Gilboa. ⁵ When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly.

¹ Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and they fell slain on Mount Gilboa. ² And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malki-Shua, the sons of Saul. ³ _⌊Saul was in the thick of the battle_⌋,* and _⌊the archers_⌋* spotted* him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. ⁴ Then Saul said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, so that these uncircumcised do not come and thrust me through and make a fool of me!" But _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* was not willing to do so because he was very afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it. ⁵ And when _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* and all his men together that same day. ⁷ And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those who were beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the towns and fled. Thus the Philistines came and lived in them.

² and Yahweh your God will give them _⌊over to you_⌋* and you defeat them, you must _⌊utterly destroy them_⌋;* you shall not make a covenant with them, and you shall not show mercy to them.

¹⁶ And you shall devour all of the peoples that Yahweh your God is giving to you; _⌊you shall not pity them_⌋,* and you shall not serve their gods, which will be a snare for you.

¹⁷ Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

³⁴ They did not exterminate the peoples, as Yahweh had commanded them, *

¹⁶ Then Yahweh raised up leaders,* and they delivered them from the hand of their plunderers.

¹⁰ And the spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and Yahweh gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and _⌊he prevailed over_⌋* Cushan-Rishathaim. ¹¹ So the land rested forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.

⁶ So they gathered to Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Yahweh. They fasted on that day and said there, "We have sinned against Yahweh!" So Samuel judged the _⌊Israelites_⌋* at Mizpah.

¹ Then Samuel said to all Israel, "Look, I have listened to your voice regarding all that you have said to me, so I have set a king over you.

¹¹ So Yahweh sent Jerub-Baal and Bedan* and Jephthah and Samuel. Then he delivered you from the hand of your enemies all around, and you lived in security.

¹ Now Samuel died, and all Israel assembled and mourned for him. They buried him at his house at Ramah. Then David got up and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

²⁰ This took* about four hundred and fifty years. And after these things, he gave them* judges until Samuel the prophet. ²¹ And then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

¹⁰ The riders of white female donkeys, those sitting on saddle blankets, and those going on the way, talk about it!

⁴ And he had thirty sons who would ride on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty towns that are in the land of Gilead that they called Havvoth Jair until this day.

¹⁴ He had forty sons and thirty grandsons that rode on seventy male donkeys. He judged Israel for eight years.

² "I will indeed set an appointed time; I will judge fairly.*

³ Judge on behalf of the helpless and the orphan; provide justice to the afflicted and the poor. ⁴ Rescue the helpless and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked."

⁷ And Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." And he built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him. ⁸ And he moved on from there to the hill country, east of Bethel. And he pitched his tent at Bethel on the west, and at Ai on the east. And he built an altar there to Yahweh. And he called on the name of Yahweh.

²⁰ And there he erected an altar and called it "El Elohe Israel."*

⁷ And he built an altar there and called the place El-Bethel, for there God had appeared to him when he fled before his brother.

⁴ On the next day the people rose early, and they built there an altar and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. ⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said, "Who in the assembly has not come up from all the tribes of Israel to Yahweh?" For a solemn oath was taken concerning whoever did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah, saying, "He will certainly be put to death."

¹ There was a certain man from Ramathaim Zophim, from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.*

¹⁹ Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before Yahweh _⌊and returned_⌋* to their house at Ramah. Then Elkanah _⌊had sexual relations with_⌋* Hannah his wife, and Yahweh remembered her.

⁴ So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.

¹⁵ So all the people went to Gilgal and they made Saul king there before Yahweh in Gilgal. They sacrificed fellowship offerings there before Yahweh. Then Saul rejoiced there greatly along with all the men of Israel.

¹⁸ So David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth. ¹⁹ And it was told to Saul, "David is in Naioth in Ramah." ²⁰ So Saul sent messengers to capture David. When they saw the company of the prophets prophesying and Samuel standing as chief over them, then the Spirit of God came upon Saul's messengers, and they also prophesied. ²¹ So they told Saul, and he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. Again Saul sent messengers a third time, and they also prophesied. ²² Then he also went to Ramah. When he came to the great cistern which was in Secu, he asked and said, "Where are Samuel and David?" Someone said, "Look they are in Naioth in Ramah." ²³ So he went there to Naioth in Ramah and the Spirit of God came upon him also, and _⌊he walked along prophesying_⌋* until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

³⁰ Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me," so all the people came closer to him.
