¹ Now there was a man from Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjaminite, _⌊a very wealthy man_⌋.* ² He had a son whose name was Saul,* a young and handsome man. There was not a man from the _⌊Israelites_⌋* more handsome than he was; from his shoulders up, he was taller than all the people. ³ Now the female donkeys of Kish the father of Saul got lost, and Kish said to Saul his son, "Please take one of the servants with you and get up; go and seek the female donkeys." ⁴ So he passed through the hill country of Ephraim; he passed through the land of Shalisha but they did not find them. They passed through the land of Shaalim but they were not there. He passed through the land of Benjamin but did not find them. ⁵ When they entered the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, "Come, let us return, lest my father cease caring about the female donkeys and worry about us!" ⁶ But he* said to him, "Look, a man of God is in this town, and the man is honored. All that he says certainly comes true. So then let us go there; perhaps he will tell us about our journey on which we have gone." ⁷ So Saul said to his servant, "Look, we may go, but what should we bring to the man? For the bread is gone from our bags, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have with us?" ⁸ The servant again answered Saul and said, "Look, _⌊I have_⌋* in my hand a quarter shekel of silver! I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us our way." ⁹ (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he would say: "Come, let us go up to the seer." For the prophet of today was formerly called a seer.) ¹⁰ So Saul said to his servant, "_⌊Your suggestion is a good one_⌋.* Come, let us go." And they went to the town where the man of God was. ¹¹ They were going up the ascent of the town when they found young women going out to draw water. They said to them, "Is there the seer here?" ¹² They answered them and said, "There is. Look, he is just in front of you! Hurry now, because he has come to the town today, because there is a sacrifice for the people today at the high place. ¹³ As soon as you enter the town, you will find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice. Then afterward the invited guests will eat. So then, go up, because you will find him today!" ¹⁴ So they went up to the town. As they were entering into the middle of the town, Samuel was coming forth to meet them, to go up to the high place. ¹⁵ Now Yahweh _⌊had revealed this to_⌋* Samuel the day before Saul arrived, saying, ¹⁶ "This time tomorrow I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you must anoint him as leader over my people Israel. He will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen the suffering of my people, because their cry of distress has come to me." ¹⁷ When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh answered him, "Here is the man about whom I told you! This is the one who will govern my people." ¹⁸ Then Saul approached Samuel in the middle of the gate and said, "Please tell me, where is the house of the seer?" ¹⁹ Samuel answered Saul and said, "I am the seer. Go up _⌊ahead of me_⌋* to the high place, and you will eat with me today; then I will send you away in the morning. I will tell you all that is _⌊on your mind_⌋.* ²⁰ And as for your female donkeys that were lost _⌊three days ago_⌋,* _⌊do not be concerned about them_⌋,* because they have been found. For whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not for you and for all the house of your father?" ²¹ Saul answered and said, "Am I not a Benjaminite, from the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the humblest of all the families of the tribes of Benjamin? Why do you speak to me _⌊in this way_⌋?"* ²² So Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them to a room in the building and gave them a place at the head of _⌊the invited guests_⌋.* There were about thirty men. ²³ Then Samuel said to the cook, "Bring the portion that I gave to you, about which I said to you, 'Keep it with you.'" ²⁴ So the cook took up the shank and what was on it and put it before Saul, and he* said, "Look, _⌊the saved portion_⌋* is placed _⌊before you_⌋*—eat, because it has been kept for you for the appointed time," _⌊and he said_⌋,* "I have invited the people." So Saul ate with Samuel that day. ²⁵ When they came down from the high place to the town, he spoke with Saul on the roof. ²⁶ They got up early, _⌊and as dawn was breaking_⌋,* Samuel called to Saul on the roof, saying, "Get up, so that I can send you away." So Saul got up and the two of them, he and Samuel, went outside. ²⁷ As they were going down to the outskirts of the town, Samuel said to Saul, "Tell the servant to pass on before us. When he has passed, you stand here _⌊a while_⌋,* so that I can make known to you the word of God."

⁵¹ Now Kish was the father of Saul, but Ner, the father of Abner, was the son of Abiel.

² Now there was a man in Maon, whose business was in Carmel. The man was very rich and _⌊owned_⌋* three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. _⌊Now_⌋* the shearing of his sheep was taking place in Carmel.

³² Now Barzillai was very old, _⌊eighty years old_⌋.* Now he had provided the king with food while he was staying at Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy man.

³⁰ And his firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Nadab, ³¹ Gedor, Ahio, Zeker, ³² and Mikloth (he fathered Shimeah). Now these also lived nearby their brothers in Jerusalem with their kinsmen. ³³ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

³⁶ And his firstborn son Abdon, and Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, ³⁷ Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth. ³⁸ And Mikloth fathered Shimeam. And they also lived nearby their brothers in Jerusalem with their brothers. ³⁹ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

³ Then* his livestock came to be seven thousand sheep and goats and three thousand camels and five hundred pairs* of oxen and five hundred female donkeys, and he had very many slaves, and that man was greater than all the people of the east.

²¹ And then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

² Then* the sons of God saw the daughters of humankind, that they were beautiful. And they took for themselves wives from all that they chose.

³³ There we saw the Nephilim (the descendants* of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their eyes."

²³ So they ran and took him from there, and when he took his stand among the people, he was taller than all the people from his shoulders and up. ²⁴ Then Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see him whom Yahweh has chosen? For there is no one like him among all the people!" And all the people shouted and said, "Long live the king!"

⁷ But Yahweh said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For God does not see what man sees, for a man _⌊looks on the outward appearance_⌋,* but Yahweh _⌊looks on the heart_⌋."*

⁴ Then _⌊a champion_⌋* went out from the camps of the Philistines, whose name was Goliath from Gath. His height was six cubits and a span.*

²⁵ As far as Absalom, there was not a more handsome man in all of Israel to admire so much; from the sole of his foot up to his crown, there was no physical defect on him. ²⁶ When he shaved his head, it would happen _⌊every year_⌋,* which he did because it was heavy on him, he would shave it off and weigh the hair of his head: two hundred shekels _⌊by the king's weight_⌋.*

²³ Thus says Yahweh,
"The wise man must not boast in his wisdom, and the warrior must not boast in his might, the wealthy man must not boast in his wealth.

¹⁰ The riders of white female donkeys, those sitting on saddle blankets, and those going on the way, talk about it!

⁴ And he had thirty sons who would ride on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty towns that are in the land of Gilead that they called Havvoth Jair until this day.

² As you go from with me _⌊today_⌋,* you will find two men near the burial site of Rachel in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will say to you, 'The female donkeys that you went to search for have been found.' Now look, your father _⌊is no longer concerned about_⌋* the female donkeys and has begun worrying about you,* saying, 'What should I do about my son?'

¹⁸ And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem which is in the land of Canaan, _⌊on his way_⌋* from Paddan-Aram. And he camped before the city.

³³ And Eleazar son of Aaron died; and they buried him in Gibeah in the hill country of Ephraim, which had been given to his son Phinehas.

¹ There was a man from the hill country of Ephraim; his name was Micah.

¹ In those days there was no king in Israel; there was a man, a Levite, who dwelled as a foreigner* in the remote areas of the hill country of Ephraim. And he took for himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.

⁴² A man came from Baal-Shalishah and brought food to the man of God: firstfruits and twenty loaves of barley bread, with ripe grain in his sack. He said, "Give it to the people and let them eat."

²³ Now John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and they were coming and were being baptized.

¹ There was a certain man from Ramathaim Zophim, from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.*

²⁵ "For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, what you will eat,* and not for your body, what you will wear. Is your life not more than food and your body more than clothing?

²⁸ And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe the lilies of the field, how they grow: they do not toil or spin,

³⁴ Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow, because tomorrow will be anxious for itself. _⌊Each day has enough trouble of its own._⌋*

¹¹ But when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious how or what you should speak in your own defense or what you should say,

²² And he said to his disciples, "For this reason I tell you, do not be anxious for your* life, what you will eat, or for your* body, what you will wear.

¹ Now* this is the blessing with which Moses, the man of God, blessed the _⌊Israelites_⌋* _⌊before_⌋* his death.

²⁷ Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him: "Thus says Yahweh: 'Did I not clearly reveal myself to the house of your ancestor* when they were in Egypt under the house of Pharaoh?

¹⁹ And Samuel grew up, and Yahweh was with him. _⌊He did not allow any of his prophecies to go unfulfilled_⌋.* ²⁰ All Israel from Dan to Beersheba realized that Samuel was faithful* as a prophet to Yahweh.

¹ Suddenly a man of God from Judah came to Bethel, by the word of Yahweh, while Jeroboam was standing at the altar to offer incense.

⁶ Then the man of God said, "Where did it fall?" So he showed him the place, and then he cut off a stick and threw it there and made the iron ax float.

²⁶ who keeps* the word of his servant and carries out the plan of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem, 'It shall be inhabited,' and of the cities of Judah, 'They shall be rebuilt, and I will restore its ruins';

⁵ "Your ancestors,* where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? ⁶ However, did not my words and my regulations which I commanded my servants the prophets overtake your ancestors?* And they repented and said, 'Yahweh of hosts planned to do with us according to our ways, and according to our deeds so he has dealt with us.'" '"

³⁵ Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and righteously and blamelessly we became to you who believe,

¹³ and to esteem them beyond all measure in love, because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

¹¹ But you, O man of God, flee from these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patient endurance, gentleness.

¹⁸ Please, do not depart from here until I come back to you and bring out my gift and set it out before you."* And he said, "I will stay until you return."

¹⁵ And Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, "_⌊Please stay_⌋,* and let us prepare a _⌊young goat_⌋* for you." ¹⁶ The angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, "If you keep me, I will not eat your food, but if you prepare a burnt offering for Yahweh, you can offer it (for Manoah did not know that he was an angel of Yahweh)." ¹⁷ And Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, "What is your name so that when your words come true we may honor you?"

³ You must take ten loaves of bread in your hand and cakes and a jar of honey, and you must go to him. He shall tell you what will happen to the boy."

⁵ So the king of Aram said, "Go, I will send a letter to the king of Israel." He went and took _⌊with him_⌋* ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten sets of clothing.

¹⁵ When he returned to the man of God, he and all of his army, he came and stood before him and said, "Please now, I know that there is no God in all of the world except in Israel. So then, please take a gift from your servant."

⁸ Then the king said to Hazael, "Take a gift in your hand and go meet the man of God. Inquire of Yahweh from him, saying, 'Shall I recover from this illness?'"

²² And the children in her womb jostled each other, and she said, "_⌊If it is going to be like this, why be pregnant_⌋?"* And she went to inquire of Yahweh.

¹ After the death of Joshua, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Who will go up first for us against the Canaanites* to fight against them?"

¹¹ When David got up in the morning, the word of Yahweh came to Gad the prophet, the seer of David, saying,

¹³ Yahweh warned Israel and Judah by the hand of his every prophet, with every seer saying, "Turn from all of your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my ordinances, according to all the law which I commanded your ancestors,* which I sent to you by the hand of my servants the prophets."

²² All of them were chosen as gatekeepers at the entrances, two hundred and twelve. They were enrolled by genealogies in their villages. They were established by David and Samuel the seer on account of their faithfulness.

²⁸ And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah had dedicated—all the dedicated gifts were under the hand of Shelomith and his brothers.

²⁹ Now the words of King David, from the first to the last, see, they are written among the words of Samuel the seer, and among the words of Nathan the prophet, and among the words of Gad the seer,

⁷ And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him, "On account of your reliance upon the king of Aram,* and since you did not rely on Yahweh your God, therefore the troops of the king of Aram* escaped from your hand.

¹⁰ Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in _⌊the prison_⌋,* for he was enraged with him concerning this. And Asa oppressed some of the people at that time.

¹⁰ For Yahweh has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep, and he has shut your eyes, the prophets, and he has covered your heads, the seers.

¹⁰ who say to those who do see, "You must not see!" and to the seers, "You must not see truth for us; speak smooth things to us, see illusions,

¹² And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee to the land of Judah and earn food there and prophesy there!"

¹³ But his servants came near and spoke to him and said, "My father, if the prophet had spoken a difficult thing to you to do, would you not have done it? Why not even when he says to you, 'Wash and you shall be clean'?" ¹⁴ So he went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh returned as the flesh of a small boy, and he was clean.

¹¹ And he made the camels kneel outside the city at the well of water, at the time of evening, toward the time the women went out to draw water.

¹⁸ And she said, "Drink, my lord." And she quickly lowered her jar in her hand and gave him a drink. ¹⁹ When* she finished giving him a drink she said, "I will also draw water for your camels until they finish drinking." ²⁰ And she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water. And she drew water for all his camels.

¹⁶ Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.*

¹¹ At the sound of those dividing* the sheep among the watering places, there they will recount the righteous deeds of Yahweh, the righteous deeds for his warriors* in Israel. Then the people of Yahweh went down to the gates.

⁵⁴ And Jacob sacrificed a sacrifice on the hill, and he called his kinsmen to eat the meal.* And they ate the meal* and spent the night on the hill.

¹¹ " 'And at the beginning of each of your months, you will present a burnt offering for Yahweh: two bulls and one ram, seven male lambs without defect _⌊in their first year_⌋;* ¹² and three-tenths of finely milled flour mixed with oil for a grain offering, for each bull; and two-tenths of finely milled flour mixed with oil for a grain offering for the one ram; ¹³ and a tenth of finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering for each male lamb, for a burnt offering of a fragrance of appeasement, an offering of fire for Yahweh. ¹⁴ Their libations will be half a liquid measure of wine for the bull and a third of a liquid measure of wine for the ram and a fourth of a liquid measure of wine for the male lamb; this is the burnt offering for every month for the months of the year. ¹⁵ And one male goat as a sin offering for Yahweh; it will be offered in addition to the continual burnt offering and its libation.

⁶ And you shall bring there your burnt offerings and your sacrifices and your tithes and _⌊your donations_⌋* and your votive gifts and your freewill offerings and the firstling of your herd and your flock. ⁷ And you shall eat there _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God, and you shall rejoice _⌊in all your endeavors_⌋,* you and your family in which Yahweh your God has blessed you.

¹⁷ Then _⌊he returned_⌋* to Ramah, because his house was there, and there he judged Israel, and he built an altar to Yahweh there.

⁵ After this, you will come to the Gibeah of God,* where there are sentries* of the Philistines. _⌊Just as you enter_⌋* the town there, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place, with harp, tambourine, flute, and zither before them, and they will be prophesying.

² But Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears, he will kill me." Yahweh said, "You must take a heifer from the herd _⌊with you_⌋,* and you must say, 'I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.'

² But the people were sacrificing on the high places, for the house for the name of Yahweh had not yet been built in those days. ³ Solomon loved Yahweh, by walking in the statutes of David his father; only he was sacrificing and offering incense on the high places. ⁴ So the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice, for the great high place was there. Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

³⁹ And he left Zadok the priest and his brothers the priests before the tabernacle of Yahweh at the high place which was at Gibeon

⁷ Clean out the old leaven in order that you may be a new batch of dough, just as you are unleavened. For Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. ⁸ So then, let us celebrate the feast, not with the old leaven or with the leaven of wickedness and sinfulness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

²⁶ Now while* they were eating Jesus took bread and, after* giving thanks, he broke it,* and giving it* to the disciples, he said, "Take, eat, this is my body."

⁴¹ And taking the five loaves and the two fish and* looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves and gave them* to his disciples so that they could set them* before them. And he distributed the two fish to them all.

³⁰ And it happened that when he reclined at the table with them, he took the bread and* gave thanks, and after* breaking it,* he gave it* to them.

¹¹ Then Jesus took the bread, and after he* had given thanks, he distributed it* to those who were reclining—likewise also of the fish, as much as they wanted.

²³ Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after* the Lord had given thanks.

³⁰ If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks?

⁴ because everything created by God is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is* received with thankfulness,

¹⁷ When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh answered him, "Here is the man about whom I told you! This is the one who will govern my people."

¹ Then Samuel said to Saul, "Yahweh sent me to anoint you as king over his people Israel. So then, _⌊listen to the words_⌋* of Yahweh!

² And he said to him, "Far from it! You will not die! Look, my father does not do* _⌊anything large or small unless he reveals it to me_⌋.* Why should my father hide this thing or anything from me?"

²⁷ For you, O Yahweh of hosts, are God of Israel! You have revealed to the ear of your servant, 'I will build a house for you'; therefore your servant _⌊has found courage_⌋* to pray this prayer to you.

¹⁶ then he opens the ear of men, and _⌊he frightens them with a warning_⌋*

¹⁴ Intimate fellowship with Yahweh is for those who fear him, and he makes known his covenant to them.

⁷ Surely my Lord does not do anything unless he has revealed his secret to his servants the prophets.

² and said to them, "Go into the village before you, and right away as you* enter into it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.* ³ And if anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' say* 'The Lord has need of it, and will send it here again at once.'" ⁴ And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it.

¹³ And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, ¹⁴ and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" ' ¹⁵ And he will show you a large upstairs room furnished* and* ready, and prepare for us there." ¹⁶ And the disciples went out and came into the city and found everything* just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

²³ For this night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve came to me,

²³ _⌊And then_⌋* during those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* groaned because of the work, and they cried out, and their cry for help because of the work went up to God. ²⁴ And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob, ²⁵ and God saw the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and God took notice.*

⁷ And Yahweh said, "Surely I have seen the misery of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry of distress because of their oppressors, for I know their sufferings. ⁸ And I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from this land to a good and wide land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Amorites* and the Perizzites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites.* ⁹ And now, look, the cry of distress of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* has come to me, and also I see the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them.

¹ Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it over his head and kissed him and said, "_⌊Has not_⌋* Yahweh anointed you as leader over his inheritance?

³ You will invite Jesse to the sacrifice and I will make known to you what you must do. You will anoint for me the one whom I tell you."

¹⁵ Then Yahweh said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. Go and anoint Hazael as king over Aram; ¹⁶ and Jehu son of Nimshi you shall anoint as king over Israel. You shall also anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-Meholah as prophet in your place.

³ You must take the flask of olive oil and pour it out on his head. You must say, 'Thus says Yahweh, "I hereby anoint you as king over Israel." ' Then you must open the door and flee; do not linger!" ⁴ So the young man, servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-Gilead. ⁵ He came, and look, the commanders of the army were sitting there. He said, "I have a word for you, O commander!" Jehu said, "For whom? For all of us?" And he said, "For you, O commander!" ⁶ He got up and went to the house, and poured the olive oil on his head and said to him, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: 'I hereby anoint you as king over the people of Yahweh, over Israel.

¹⁸ Consider my affliction and trouble, and forgive* all my sins.

⁴⁴ Yet he looked upon their distress when he heard their cry.

¹³ I will make him know that I am about to judge his household forever because of the iniquity that he knew, for his sons were bringing curses on themselves,* but he did not rebuke them.

⁶ _⌊When they came_⌋,* he* saw Eliab and said, "Surely his anointed one is before Yahweh!" ⁷ But Yahweh said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For God does not see what man sees, for a man _⌊looks on the outward appearance_⌋,* but Yahweh _⌊looks on the heart_⌋."* ⁸ Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel, and he said, "This one also Yahweh has not chosen." ⁹ So Jesse made Shammah pass before Samuel, but he said, "Yahweh also has not chosen this one." ¹⁰ And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, "Yahweh has not chosen any of these." ¹¹ Then Samuel said to Jesse, "_⌊Are all the young men here_⌋?"* And he said, "The youngest still remains, but look, he is shepherding the flock." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and bring him, for we cannot _⌊sit down_⌋* until he comes here." ¹² So he sent and brought him. Now he was ruddy with beautiful eyes and of _⌊handsome_⌋* appearance. And Yahweh said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is he."

⁶ But evil persons are like thorns cast aside; all of them, because they cannot be picked up in the hand. ⁷ And if a man wants to touch them, he must use an iron instrument or the shaft of a spear; then they are consumed entirely with fire on the spot."

¹⁹ So when it became dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors be shut and said that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I appointed some of my young men over the gates to prevent any _⌊goods_⌋* being brought in on the day of the Sabbath.

²⁵ So I quarreled with them and cursed them and beat some of their men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath by God: "Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.

¹¹ I gave you a king in my anger, and I took him in my wrath.

³ For rulers are not a cause of terror for a good deed, but for bad conduct. So do you want not to be afraid of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from it, ⁴ for it is God's servant to you for what is good. But if you do what is bad, be afraid, because it does not bear the sword to no purpose. For it is God's servant, the one who avenges for punishment on the one who does what is bad.

²⁹ "Come, see a man who told me everything I have ever done! Perhaps this one is the Christ?"

²⁵ the secret things of his heart become evident, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God, proclaiming, "God is truly among you!"

²⁰ Just before the time of her death, those _⌊attending her_⌋* said, "Do not fear, for you have given birth to a son." But she did not answer, or _⌊pay any attention_⌋.*

⁵ They said to him, "Look, you are old and your sons do not follow in your ways. So then appoint a king for us to judge* us, like all the nations.

¹⁹ However, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel and they said, "No, but there must be a king over us,

³ Now the female donkeys of Kish the father of Saul got lost, and Kish said to Saul his son, "Please take one of the servants with you and get up; go and seek the female donkeys."

¹³ So then look! Here is the king you have chosen, for whom you have asked! Look, Yahweh has placed a king over you!

¹⁵ But, if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh, and you rebel against _⌊what Yahweh says_⌋,* then the hand of Yahweh will be against you* as it was against your ancestors.*

³ And moreover, with respect to my provisions for the house of my God I have a treasure of gold and silver that I have given to the house of my God above all that I have provided for the holy house:

¹⁰ Do not trust in extortion, and do not put vain confidence in robbery. If wealth increases, do not set your heart on it.

² Set your mind on the things above, not on the things on earth.

¹⁴ And Yahweh turned to him and said, "Go in this your strength, and you will deliver Israel from the palm of Midian. Did I not send you?" ¹⁵ He said to him, "Excuse me, my lord. How will I deliver Israel? Look, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father's house."

⁴⁶ So all of Benjamin who fell on that day were twenty-five thousand _⌊sword-wielding men_⌋;* all of these were _⌊able men_⌋.* ⁴⁷ But six hundred turned and fled toward the wilderness, to the rock of Rimmon, and they remained at the rock of Rimmon for four months. ⁴⁸ And the men of Israel returned to the descendants* of Benjamin, and they put them to _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* both the inhabitants of city and the animals that were found; they also set on fire all the cities that they found.

²⁷ However, some _⌊worthless men_⌋* said, "How can this man deliver us?" So they despised him and brought no gift to him, but he kept silent.*

¹⁷ Samuel said, "Even though you are small in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? Yahweh has anointed you as king over Israel.

¹⁸ But David said to Saul, "Who am I, and who are my relatives, the clan of my father in Israel, that I should be a son-in-law to the king?"

²³ And Saul's servants spoke these words _⌊to David privately_⌋.* But David said, "Is it insignificant _⌊in your sight_⌋* to become the son-in-law of the king, as I am a poor and lightly esteemed man?"

²⁷ There is little Benjamin ruling them, with the princes of Judah in their throng, the princes of Zebulun and the princes of Naphtali.

¹ When Ephraim spoke,* there was terror; he was exalted in Israel, but he incurred guilt through Baal and died.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

⁸ To me, the least of all the saints, was given this grace: to proclaim the good news of the fathomless riches of Christ to the Gentiles,

³² And they served him* by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who were eating with him by themselves, for Egyptians _⌊could not dine_⌋* with Hebrews, because that was a detestable thing to Egyptians.

¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and* recline at the table in the last place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then it will be an honor to you in the presence of all those who are reclining at the table with you.

³⁴ And portions were served to them from _⌊his table_⌋,* and the portion of Benjamin was five times greater than the portion of any of them. And they drank and became drunk with him.

⁵ But to Hannah he would give _⌊a double portion_⌋,* because he loved Hannah, though Yahweh had closed her womb.

²² And you will take from the ram the fat and the fat tail and the fat covering the inner parts and the lobe of the liver and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them and the right thigh, because it is the ram of ordination.

²⁷ And you will consecrate the wave offering breast section and the thigh of the contribution that was waved and that was presented* from the ram of the ordination that is for Aaron and for his sons.

³² And the right upper thigh you* must give as a contribution for the priest from your* fellowship offerings' sacrifice. ³³ As for the one from Aaron's sons who presents the blood of the fellowship offerings and the fat, the right upper thigh _⌊shall belong to him_⌋* as his share,

¹⁸ But their flesh will be for you like the breast section of the wave offering, and it will be for you like the right upper thigh.

⁴ Gather its pieces to it, every good piece, thigh and shoulder, fill it with choice bones;

⁸ "When you build a new house then* you shall make a parapet wall* for your roof, so that you will not bring bloodguilt on your house _⌊if anyone should fall from it_⌋.*

² It happened _⌊late one afternoon_⌋* that David got up from his bed and walked about on the roof of the king's house, and he saw a woman bathing on her* roof. Now the woman _⌊was very beautiful_⌋.*

¹⁶ So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, in their courtyards, in the courtyards of the house of God, in the public square of the Water Gate, and in the public square of the Gate of Ephraim.

¹³ And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be unclean like the place of Topheth, all the houses where they made smoke offerings upon their roofs to all the host of heaven, and where they poured out libations to other gods." '"

²⁷ What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light, and what you hear in your ear, proclaim on the housetops.

⁹ And the next day, as* they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about the sixth hour.

¹⁴ Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law who were taking* his daughters and said, "Get up! Go out from this place, because Yahweh is going to destroy the city!" But _⌊it seemed like a joke_⌋* in the eyes of his sons-in-law.

⁴ They went out of the city, and had not gone far when Joseph said to the one who was over his house, "Arise! Pursue after the men and overtake them. Then you shall say to them, 'Why have you repaid evil for good?

¹³ Get up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow. Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel: "There are devoted things* in your midst, O Israel. You will be unable to stand before you enemies until you remove the devoted things* from your midst."

²⁸ And he said to her, "Get up, let us go," but there was no answer. So he put her on the donkey, and the man got up and went to his place.

¹⁶ Then Samuel said to Saul, "Stop and let me tell you what Yahweh said to me last night." So he said to him, "Speak."

³⁸ Then Jonathan called out after the boy, "Quick, hurry, do not linger!" And Jonathan's servant collected the arrows and came to his master. ³⁹ But the boy did not know anything about this; only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

¹⁴ You are my friends if you do what I command you. ¹⁵ No longer do I call you slaves, because the slave does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything that I have heard from my Father I have revealed to you.
