³ Whenever they say "Peace and security," then sudden destruction will overtake them like the birth pains of _⌊a pregnant woman_⌋*, and they will not possibly escape.

⁹ The enemy said, 'I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide plunder, my desire will be full of them, I will draw my sword, my hand will destroy them.' ¹⁰ You blew with your breath; the sea covered them; they dropped like lead in the mighty waters.

¹⁹ And then when he hears the words of this oath, then* _⌊he will assure himself_⌋* in his heart, _⌊saying_⌋,* '_⌊Safety shall be mine even though I go in the stubbornness of my heart_⌋,'* thereby destroying the well-watered land along with the parched.*

²⁰ Then the men of Ai looked behind them, and they saw smoke from the city rising to the sky; _⌊they had no power to flee this way or that_⌋,* and the people fleeing the wilderness turned around to the pursuers.* ²¹ And Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city and that the smoke of the city was rising; they returned and struck down the men of Ai. ²² Then the others from the city came out to meet them, _⌊and they found themselves surrounded by Israel_⌋,* _⌊some on one side, and others on the other side_⌋.* And they* struck them down until no survivor or fugitive was left.

²⁷ And they took what Micah had made, and his priest, and they came to Laish, to a quiet and unsuspecting people, and _⌊they put them to the sword_⌋* and burned the city with fire. ²⁸ There was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and _⌊they had had no dealings with anyone_⌋.* It was in the valley that belonged to Beth-rehob, and they rebuilt* the city and lived in it.

⁴¹ And the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed because they saw that disaster was _⌊closing in_⌋* on them. ⁴² And they retreated from before the men of Israel to the way of the wilderness, but the battle caught up to them, and those who came from the cities* destroyed them in the midst of them.

¹⁹ And they spoke about the God of Jerusalem as about the gods of the peoples of the earth, the works of the hands of humankind. ²⁰ Then King Hezekiah and Isaiah the son of Amoz, the prophet, prayed concerning this. And they cried to the heavens. ²¹ Then Yahweh sent an angel, and he destroyed every mighty warrior of strength, commander, and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. And he returned with shamed face to his land and went into the house of his god. And some of the offspring of his loins fell upon him there with the sword.

¹¹ He says in his heart, "God has forgotten. He has hidden his face. He never sees." ¹² Rise up, O Yahweh; O God, lift up your hand. Do not forget the afflicted. ¹³ Why does the wicked treat God with contempt? He says in his heart, "You will not call me to account."

⁶ Trembling seized them there— pain as of a woman in labor.

¹⁸ Surely you set them on slippery places. You cause them to fall onto ruin.* ¹⁹ How they become a desolation in a moment! They come to a complete end by terrors. ²⁰ Like a dream upon awakening, when you wake up, O Lord, you will despise their fleeting form.*

¹ A man who is reproved, being stubborn of neck— suddenly he will be broken, and there will not be healing.

³ Therefore my loins are filled with anguish; pangs have seized me, like the pangs of a woman giving birth. I am _⌊too bent to hear_⌋,* I am _⌊too dismayed to see_⌋.* ⁴ My _⌊mind_⌋* staggers; fear terrifies me; the twilight _⌊I desired_⌋* _⌊brought_⌋* me fear.

¹³ therefore this iniquity shall come for you like a breach about to fall, bulging out on a high wall _⌊that breaks_⌋* suddenly, in an instant.

⁶ I will say to the north, 'Give!' and to the south, 'You must not withhold!' Bring my sons from far away, and my daughters from the end of the earth— ⁷ everyone who is called by my name, and whom I created for my glory, whom I formed, indeed whom I made." ⁸ Bring out the people blind yet* with eyes, and deaf, though* they have ears. ⁹ Let all the nations gather together, and let the peoples assemble. Who among them has declared this, and _⌊declared_⌋* the former things to us? Let them bring* their witnesses, that* they may be in the right, and let them hear and say, "It is true!"

¹² "Come, let me take wine, and let us carouse with intoxicating drink, and tomorrow will be like today, _⌊very great indeed_⌋."*

³¹ For I heard a voice like an ill woman, anxiety like a woman who bears her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion. She is gasping for breath, she is spreading out her hands: "Woe is me, for I am becoming tired* before killers."

²⁴ We have heard news of it, our hands grow slack, anxiety has grasped us, pain as a woman who gives birth.

²¹ What will you say when he sets over you— and you have taught them—allies as head over you? Will not labor pains take hold of you, like a woman giving birth?

²³ Inhabitants* of Lebanon, nestled among the cedars, how you will groan when labor pains come to you, fear and pain as the woman who gives birth.

³ Then they brought in the vessels of gold that they took from the temple, the house of God that was in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords,* his wives and his concubines drank from them. ⁴ They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood and stone.* ⁵ _⌊Immediately_⌋* _⌊human fingers_⌋* appeared and they wrote _⌊opposite_⌋* the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the palace of the king, and the king was watching* the palm of the hand that was writing. ⁶ Then his face changed and his thoughts terrified him, and _⌊his hip joints gave way_⌋* and _⌊his knees knocked together_⌋.*

¹³ The labor pains of childbirth come for him; he is an unwise son because at the proper time, he does not present himself _⌊at the mouth of the womb_⌋.*

⁹ So then, why do you shout a loud shout? Is there no king in you? Has your counselor perished that pangs like a woman in labor have seized you? ¹⁰ Writhe and groan, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in labor. For now you will go forth from the city, and you will camp in the field; you will go to Babylon. There you will be rescued; there Yahweh will redeem you from the hand of your enemies.

¹⁰ For like entangled thorns, and like their drink which is drunk, they will be consumed like fully dry chaff.

³³ Serpents! Offspring of vipers! How will you escape from the condemnation to hell?

³⁷ For just as the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. ³⁸ For as in the days* before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered into the ark. ³⁹ And they did not know anything* until the deluge came and swept them* all away. So also the coming of the Son of Man will be.

²⁶ And just as it was in the days of Noah, so also it will be in the days of the Son of Man— ²⁷ they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. ²⁸ Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building. ²⁹ But on the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed them all. ³⁰ It will be _⌊just the same_⌋* on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.

³⁴ "But take care for yourselves, lest your hearts are weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of daily life, and that day come upon you suddenly ³⁵ like a trap. For it will come upon all who reside on the face of the whole earth.

²² But the people began to call out loudly,* "The voice of a god and not of a man!" ²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down _⌊because_⌋* he did not give the glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and* died.

⁴¹ 'Look, you scoffers, and be astonished and perish! For I am doing a work in your days, a work that you would never believe even if someone were to tell it* to you.'"*

⁹ who will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength,

³ how will we escape if we* neglect so great a salvation which had its beginning when it* was spoken through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard,

²³ and assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of righteous people made perfect,

⁴ For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but held them captive in Tartarus with chains of darkness and handed them over to be kept for judgment,

⁷ As much as she glorified herself and lived in luxury, give to her so much torment and mourning, because in her heart she said, 'I sit as a queen, and am not a widow, and I will never see mourning!' ⁸ Because of this her plagues will come in one day— death and mourning and famine— and she will be burned up with fire, because the Lord God who passes judgment on her is powerful!"
