¹ "Then we turned and set out toward the wilderness* in the direction of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋,* as Yahweh told me, and we went around Mount Seir for many days. ² Yahweh spoke to me, _⌊saying_⌋,* ³ 'Long enough you have been skirting this mountain; turn yourselves north, ⁴ and instruct* the people, _⌊saying_⌋,* "You are about to cross through the territory of your brothers, the descendants* of Esau, who are living in Seir; they will be afraid of you, and so be very careful. ⁵ Do not get involved in battle* with them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even _⌊a foot's breadth_⌋* of it; since I have given Mount Seir as a possession for Esau. ⁶ You shall buy food from them so that you may eat; and also you shall purchase water from them with money so that you may drink. ⁷ The fact of the matter is, Yahweh your God has blessed you in _⌊all the work you have done_⌋;* he knows _⌊your travels_⌋* with respect to this great wilderness; forty years Yahweh your God has been with you; you have not lacked a thing." ' ⁸ And so we passed by our brothers, the descendants* of Esau, who live in Seir, past the road of the Arabah,* from Elath and Ezion Geber, and we turned and traveled along the route of the desert* of Moab. ⁹ And Yahweh said to me, 'You shall not attack Moab, and you shall not engage in war* with them, for I will not give you any of his land as a possession; I have given Ar to the descendants* of Lot as a possession.' ¹⁰ (The Emim previously lived in it, a people large,* numerous, and tall, like the Anakites. ¹¹ They were reckoned also as Rephaim as the Anakites were; but the Moabites called them Emim. ¹² The Horites previously lived in Seir, but the descendants* of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them _⌊from among themselves_⌋,* as Israel did with respect to the land of their* possession that Yahweh gave to them.) ¹³ So now arise and cross over the wadi* of Zered yourselves; and so we crossed the wadi* of Zered. ¹⁴ Now the _⌊length of time_⌋* that we had traveled from Kadesh Barnea until the time when we crossed the wadi* of Zered was thirty-eight years, until the perishing of all of that generation; that is, the men of war from the midst of the camp as Yahweh had sworn to them. ¹⁵ The hand of Yahweh was against them to root them out from the midst of the camp until they perished completely. ¹⁶ "_⌊And then_⌋* when all the men of war* _⌊had died_⌋* from among the people, ¹⁷ Yahweh spoke to me, _⌊saying_⌋,* ¹⁸ 'You are about to cross over the boundary of Moab _⌊today_⌋* at Ar. ¹⁹ When you approach _⌊the border of_⌋* the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* you shall not harass them, and you shall not get involved in battle with them, for I have not given the land of _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* to you as a possession; because I have given it to the descendants* of Lot as a possession. ²⁰ (It is also considered the land of Rephaim; Rephaim lived in it _⌊previously_⌋,* and the Ammonites called them Zamzummim, ²¹ a people great and numerous and as tall as the Anakites; Yahweh destroyed them from before them,* and they dispossessed them and settled in place of them, ²² just as he did for the descendants* of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from _⌊before them_⌋* and dispossessed them, and then they settled in their* place up to this day. ²³ And also the Avvites, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, and the Caphtorim, who came out from Caphtor, destroyed them and then settled in their place. ²⁴ Arise,* set out and cross over the wadi* of Arnon. Look! I have given Sihon the Amorite, the king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand; begin to take possession of it, and engage with him in battle. ²⁵ This day I will begin to place _⌊the dread of you_⌋* and the fear of you _⌊before_⌋* the peoples under all the heavens. They will hear _⌊the report about you_⌋,* and so they will shake and tremble _⌊because of you_⌋.' * ²⁶ "So I sent messengers from the wilderness* of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon; I sent terms of peace, _⌊saying_⌋,* ²⁷ 'Let me cross through your land and _⌊only along the road_⌋* I will go; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. ²⁸ Food for money you shall sell me, so that I may eat, and water for money you will give to me, so that I may drink; just let me cross on foot. ²⁹ Just as the descendants* of Esau did for me, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, until I cross the Jordan into the land that Yahweh our God is giving to us.' ³⁰ But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us cross through his territory because Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and _⌊made him obstinate_⌋* _⌊in order to give him_⌋* into your hand, _⌊just as he has now done_⌋.* ³¹ Yahweh said to me, 'Look! I have begun to give _⌊over to you_⌋* Sihon and his land; begin _⌊to take possession of his land_⌋.'* ³² Then Sihon and all his people came out to meet us for battle at Jahaz. ³³ And so Yahweh our God gave him over _⌊to us_⌋,* and we struck him down, and his sons* and all of his people. ³⁴ So we captured all of his cities at that time, and we destroyed each town of males and the women and the children; we did not leave behind a survivor. ³⁵ We took only the livestock as spoil for ourselves,* and also the booty of the cities that we had captured. ³⁶ From Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon and the city that was in the wadi* on up to Gilead, there was not a city that was inaccessible to us; Yahweh our God gave _⌊everything_⌋* _⌊to us_⌋.* ³⁷ Only the land of _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* you did not approach, all along the whole upper region of the Jabbok _⌊River_⌋* and the towns of the hill country, according to all that Yahweh our God had instructed.

²⁵ And the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; tomorrow turn and set out for the desert by way of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋."*

⁴ They set out from Mount Hor by the way of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* to go around the land of Edom; but _⌊the people became impatient_⌋* along the way.

² It is a journey of _⌊eleven days_⌋* from Herob _⌊by the way of Mount Seir_⌋* up to Kadesh Barnea.

⁴⁰ But you turn and set out in the direction of the wilderness by way of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋.'*

¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to _⌊the east_⌋* side of the land of Moab, and they* encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab.

⁶ "Yahweh our God spoke to us at Horeb, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'You have stayed _⌊long enough_⌋* at this mountain.

⁷ The fact of the matter is, Yahweh your God has blessed you in _⌊all the work you have done_⌋;* he knows _⌊your travels_⌋* with respect to this great wilderness; forty years Yahweh your God has been with you; you have not lacked a thing." '

¹⁴ Now the _⌊length of time_⌋* that we had traveled from Kadesh Barnea until the time when we crossed the wadi* of Zered was thirty-eight years, until the perishing of all of that generation; that is, the men of war from the midst of the camp as Yahweh had sworn to them.

¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were horrified; great distress seized the leaders of Moab; all of the inhabitants of Canaan melted away.

¹⁴ From Kadesh Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom: "Thus your brother Israel has said, 'You know all the hardship that has found us; ¹⁵ our ancestors* went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt _⌊a long time_⌋,* and the Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors.* ¹⁶ Then we cried to Yahweh, and he heard our voice; he sent an angel and brought us out from Egypt. And look, we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. ¹⁷ Please let us go through your land. We will not go through a field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from a well. We will go along the road of the king; we will not turn aside right or left until we have gone through your territory.'" ¹⁸ Then Edom said to him, "You will not pass through us* lest _⌊we will go out_⌋* to meet you with the sword." ¹⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to him, "We will go up on the main road, and if we* and our livestock* drink your water, we will pay for it.* It is only a small matter; let us pass through on our feet."* ²⁰ But he said, "You will not go through." And Edom went out to meet _⌊them_⌋* with a large army and a strong hand. ²¹ So Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, and Israel turned aside from him.

³ and Moab was very terrified in the presence of the people because _⌊they_⌋* were numerous; and Moab dreaded the presence of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, "Now the crowd will lick up all around us, like a bull devours the grass of the field." And Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

¹⁴ And now, look, I am about to go to my people; I will advise you what this people will do to your people _⌊in the following days_⌋."* ¹⁵ And he _⌊uttered_⌋* his oracle and said,
"The declaration of Balaam son of Beor, and the declaration of the man whose eye is closed, ¹⁶ the declaration of the hearer of God's words,* and the knower of the knowledge of the Most High, who sees the vision of Shaddai,* who is falling, and his eyes are revealed. ¹⁷ I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; a star will go out from Jacob, and a scepter will rise from Israel; it will crush the foreheads of Moab and destroy all the children of Seth. ¹⁸ Edom will be a captive; Seir, its enemies, will be a captive, and Israel will be acting _⌊courageously_⌋.*

⁷ "You shall not abhor an Edomite, because he is your brother; you shall not abhor an Egyptian because you were an alien in his land.

¹⁰ "Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you and you will be cut off forever. ¹¹ On _⌊the day you stood nearby_⌋,* _⌊on the day strangers took_⌋* his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem, you were also like one of them. ¹² But you should not have gloated* over your brother's day, on the day of his misfortune, and you should not have rejoiced over the _⌊people_⌋* of Judah on the day of their perishing, and you should not have opened your mouth wide on the day of distress. ¹³ You should not have entered the gate of my people on the day of their disaster. You also should not have gloated over his misery on the day of his disaster, and you should not have stretched out your hands on the day of his disaster.

¹⁶ In the same way let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

¹⁵ And he said to them, "Watch out and guard yourselves from all greediness, because not even when someone has an abundance _⌊does_⌋* his life consist of his possessions."

¹⁵ Therefore, consider carefully how you live, not as unwise but as wise,

¹⁵ in order that you may become blameless and innocent, children of God without fault* in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine as stars in the world,*

⁵ Live with wisdom toward those outside, making the most of the time.

⁸ So Esau dwelled in the hill country of Seir (Esau, that is Edom).

⁸ _⌊When the Most High apportioned_⌋* the nations, at his dividing up of the sons of humankind, he fixed the boundaries of the peoples, according to the number of the children of Israel.*

⁴ and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.

¹⁰ And now, look, the people* of Moab and Ammon and Mount Seir whom you did not allow Israel to come against when they came from Egypt, from whom they turned aside and did not destroy, ¹¹ now behold, they are rewarding us by coming to dispossess us from your possession which you gave us as an inheritance. ¹² O our God, will you not judge them, for there is no power in us before this great multitude that is coming against us. Now we do not know what we shall do, for our eyes are upon you."

⁵ "I have made the earth with humankind and animals* that are on the face of the earth by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and I give it to whomever is right in my eyes.

²⁵ you will be driven away _⌊from human society_⌋* and _⌊you will dwell_⌋* with the animals* of the field, and you will be caused to graze grass like the oxen _⌊yourself_⌋,* and you will be watered with the dew of heaven, and seven periods of time will pass over you until that you have acknowledged that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdom of humankind, and _⌊to whom he wills_⌋* he gives it.

³² and you will be driven away from _⌊human society_⌋* and your dwelling will be with the animals* of the field and they will cause you to graze the grass like oxen, and seven times will pass over you, until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdom of humankind and that he gives it to whom he wills.'

⁵ And he did not give him an inheritance in it—not even a footstep*—and he promised to give it* to him for his possession, and to his descendants after him, _⌊although he did not have_⌋** a child.

²⁶ And he made from one man every nation of humanity to live on all the face of the earth, determining their fixed times and the fixed boundaries of their habitation,

¹⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to him, "We will go up on the main road, and if we* and our livestock* drink your water, we will pay for it.* It is only a small matter; let us pass through on our feet."*

²⁸ Food for money you shall sell me, so that I may eat, and water for money you will give to me, so that I may drink; just let me cross on foot. ²⁹ Just as the descendants* of Esau did for me, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, until I cross the Jordan into the land that Yahweh our God is giving to us.'

¹² Therefore in all things, whatever you want that people should do to you, thus also you do to them. For this is the law and the prophets.

¹⁷ Pay back no one evil for evil. Take thought for what is good in the sight of all people.

⁷ For you yourselves know how it is necessary to imitate us, that we did not behave irresponsibly among you, ⁸ nor did we eat bread from anyone without paying, but with toil and labor, we were working night and day in order not to be a burden to any of you,

² And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing.

³⁵ Now Yahweh has blessed my master exceedingly, and he has become great. He has given to him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male slaves and female slaves, and camels and donkeys.

¹² And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in that same year a hundredfold, and Yahweh blessed him.

²⁷ But Laban said to him, "Please, if I have found favor in your eyes, I have learned by divination that Yahweh has blessed me because of you."

⁵ And it happened that from the time he appointed him over his house and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the house of the Egyptian on account of Joseph. And the blessing of Yahweh was upon all that he had in the house and in the field.

² And you shall remember all of the way that Yahweh your God led you during these forty years in the desert in order to humble you and to test you to know what is in your heart, whether you would diligently keep his commandments or not. ³ And he humbled you and let you go hungry, and then he fed you with that which you did not know nor did your ancestors* know, in order to make you know that not by bread alone but by all that goes out* of the mouth of Yahweh humankind shall live. ⁴ Your clothing did not wear out _⌊on you_⌋,* and your feet did not swell during these forty years.

⁵ And I have led you forty years* in the desert; your clothes have not worn out _⌊on you_⌋,* and your sandal has not worn out _⌊on your foot_⌋.*

²¹ Forty years you sustained them in the desert—they were not in need. Their clothing did not wear out and their feet did not swell.

¹⁰ But he knows _⌊the way that I take_⌋;* he tests me—I shall come out like gold.

⁶ for Yahweh knows the way of the righteous,* but the way of the wicked will perish.

⁷ I will exult and rejoice in your loyal love. Because you have seen my misery, you know the distresses of my life.*

¹⁷ And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish for us the work of our hands, yes, the work of our hands, establish it.

³⁵ And he said to them, "When I sent you out without a money bag and a traveler's bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?"* And they said, "Nothing."

²⁷ My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

³⁵ They set out from Abronah and camped at Ezion Geber.

¹ These are the words that Moses spoke to all of Israel _⌊on the other side of_⌋* the Jordan in the desert,* in the desert plateau* opposite Suph, between Paran and between Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab.

²⁶ King Solomon also built a fleet of ships at Ezion-Geber which is near Elath on the shore of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* in the land of Edom.

²² He rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after the king slept with his ancestors.*

⁶ At that time, Rezin king of Aram recovered Elath for Aram and drove out the Judeans from Elath. The Arameans came to Elath and have lived there until this day.

³⁶ And the two daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father. ³⁷ The firstborn gave birth to a son, and she called his name Moab. He is the father of Moab until this day.

¹⁵ and the slope of the wadis that spreads out to the dwelling of Ar and lies at the boundary of Moab."

²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the* high places of Arnon.

⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, "Now the crowd will lick up all around us, like a bull devours the grass of the field." And Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

¹⁷ Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Please let us cross through your land," but the king of Edom would not listen. And they also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he was not willing. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.

¹⁰ And now, look, the people* of Moab and Ammon and Mount Seir whom you did not allow Israel to come against when they came from Egypt, from whom they turned aside and did not destroy,

⁸ Assyria also has joined with them. They _⌊provide help_⌋* to the children of Lot. Selah

⁵ In the fourteenth year Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-Karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-Kiriathaim,

²² They went up through the Negev* and came to Hebron, where* Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai the descendants of the Anakites were. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

¹¹ They were reckoned also as Rephaim as the Anakites were; but the Moabites called them Emim.

²⁸ Yet the people who are inhabiting it are strong and the cities are fortified and very large; moreover, we saw the descendants of the Anakites there.

³³ There we saw the Nephilim (the descendants* of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their eyes."

²⁸ Where can we go up? Our brothers have _⌊made our hearts melt_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* "The people are greater* and taller than we are,* and there are great fortified cities reaching up to heaven, and we saw the sons of the Anakites living there." '

² a great and tall people, the sons of the Anakites, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, 'Who could stand before the sons of Anak?'

⁶ And the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El-Paran, which is at the wilderness.

²⁰ These are the sons of Seir, the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ²¹ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. ²² And the sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam. And Lotan's sister was Timna. ²³ Now these are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. ²⁴ Now these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is Anah who found the hot springs in the desert while he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father. ²⁵ Now these are the sons of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ²⁶ Now these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. ²⁷ These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. ²⁸ These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹ These are the chiefs of the Horites: the chiefs Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ³⁰ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir. ³¹ Now these are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ³² Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom. And the name of his city was Dinhabah. ³³ And Bela died, and Jobab, the son of Zerah from Bozrah, reigned in his place. ³⁴ And Jobab died, and Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. ³⁵ And Husham died, and Hadad, son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the field* of Moab reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith. ³⁶ And Hadad died, and Samlah from Masrekah reigned in his place. ³⁷ And Samlah died, and Shaul from Rehoboth on the Euphrates* reigned in his place. ³⁸ And Shaul died, and Baal-Hanan, the son of Acbor, reigned in his place. ³⁹ And Baal-Hanan the son of Acbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Pau, and the name of his wife was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab. ⁴⁰ Now these are the names of the chiefs of Esau according to their families, according to their dwelling places, by their names: the chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, ⁴¹ Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, ⁴² Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, ⁴³ Magdiel, and Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of Edom) according to their settlements in the land of their possession.

²¹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites,* saying, ²² "Let us go through your land; we will not turn aside into a field or vineyard; we will not drink well water along the way of the king until we have gone through your territory." ²³ But Sihon did not allow Israel to go through his territory. Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel; he came to the desert, to Jahaz, and he fought against Israel. ²⁴ But Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and they took possession of his land from Arnon to Jabbok, until the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* because the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* was strong. ²⁵ Israel took all these cities, and Israel inhabited all the cities of the Amorites,* in Heshbon, and in all its environs.* ²⁶ Because Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand until Arnon. ²⁷ Thus the ones who quote proverbs say,
"Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! And let the city of Sihon be established. ²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the* high places of Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, people of Chemosh. He has given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, to the king of the Amorites,* Sihon. ³⁰ We destroyed them; Heshbon has perished up to Dibon; we laid waste up to Nophah, which _⌊reaches_⌋* Medeba." ³¹ Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.* ³² Moses sent to explore Jaazer; they captured _⌊its environs_⌋* and dispossessed the Amorites* who were there. ³³ Then they turned and went up by the way of the Bashan, and Og king of the Bashan and all his people went out to meet them for battle at Edrei. ³⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Do not fear him because I will give him and all his people and all his land into your hand. You will do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites,* who was living in Heshbon." ³⁵ And so they destroyed him and his sons, and all his people until they had not spared a survivor; and they took possession of his land.

And the name of his city was Avith.* ⁴⁷ When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah reigned in his place. ⁴⁸ When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place. ⁴⁹ When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Achbor reigned in his place. ⁵⁰ When Baal-Hanan died, Hadad reigned in his place, and the name of his city was Pai.* And the name of his wife was Mehetabel, daughter of Matred, daughter of Me-Zahab. ⁵¹ And Hadad died. And the chiefs of Edom were: chiefs Timna, Aliah, Jetheth, ⁵² Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, ⁵³ Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, ⁵⁴ Magdiel, and Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom.

²³ And they came up to the valley* of Eshcol, and they cut off a vine branch and one cluster of grapes from there; they carried it on a pole between two men, with pomegranates and figs.

¹² From there they set out and encamped at the valley of Zered.

²⁶ And they came* to Moses and Aaron and to the entire community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Paran at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the community, and they showed them the fruit of the land.

²⁸ Say to them, 'Surely as I live,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'just as you spoke _⌊in my hearing_⌋,* so I will do to you; ²⁹ in this desert your corpses will fall, and all your counted ones, according to all your number, from _⌊twenty years old_⌋* and above who grumbled against me. ³⁰ You yourselves will not come into the land that _⌊I swore by oath_⌋* to make you to dwell in it, but Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. ³¹ But your little children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them, and they will know the land that you rejected. ³² But for you, all your corpses will fall in this desert. ³³ And your children will be shepherds in the desert forty years,* and you will bear your unfaithfulness until _⌊all your corpses have fallen_⌋* in the desert. ³⁴ According to the number of the days* that you explored the land, forty days,* _⌊a day for each year_⌋,* you will bear your sins forty years,* and you will know my opposition.' ³⁵ I, Yahweh, have spoken; I will surely do this to all this evil community who has banded together against me. In this desert they will come to an end, and there they will die."

⁶⁴ And among these there was not a man of those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For Yahweh said to them, "They will surely die in the desert." And not a man was left over from them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

¹¹ 'The men who went up from Egypt, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, will not see the land that I swore with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob because they have not wholly followed me,

¹⁹ "Then we set out from Horeb, and we went through the whole of that great and terrible desert that you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites* as Yahweh our God had commanded us, and so we came up to Kadesh Barnea.

³⁴ "Then Yahweh heard the sound of your words, and he was angry, and he swore, _⌊saying_⌋,* ³⁵ 'No one of these men* of this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,*

⁴⁶ You stayed in Kadesh many days; such were the days that you stayed there.

³ You return man to the dust, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Return, O sons of man."

⁹ For all of our days dwindle away in your rage; we complete our years like a sigh.

¹¹ Therefore I swore in my anger, 'They shall surely not enter into my rest.'"

²⁶ So _⌊he made an oath_⌋* against them, to make them drop in the wilderness,

¹⁵ And also _⌊I myself swore_⌋* to them in the desert not to bring them into the land that I had given to them, flowing with milk and honey—it is the most beautiful of all of the lands—

⁵ But God was not pleased with the majority of them, for they were struck down in the desert.

⁸ do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness, ⁹ where your fathers tested me by trial and saw my works ¹⁰ for forty years. Therefore I was angry with this generation, and I said, 'They always go astray in their heart, and they do not know my ways.' ¹¹ As I swore in my anger, '_⌊They will never enter_⌋* into my rest.'"* ¹² Watch out, brothers, lest there be in some of you an evil, unbelieving heart, with the result that you fall away* from the living God. ¹³ But encourage one another _⌊day by day_⌋*, as long as it is called "today," so that _⌊none of you become hardened_⌋* by the deception of sin. ¹⁴ For we have become partners of Christ, if indeed we hold fast the beginning of our commitment steadfast until the end, ¹⁵ _⌊while it is said_⌋*,
"Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."* ¹⁶ For who, when they* heard it, were disobedient? Surely it was not all who went out from Egypt through Moses? ¹⁷ And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did he swear they would not enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ And so we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

⁵ Now I want to remind you, although you know everything once and for all,* that Jesus,* having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, the second time destroyed those who did not believe.

¹⁵ _⌊Whenever_⌋* they went out, the hand of Yahweh was against them to harm them, just as Yahweh warned, and just as Yahweh had sworn to them. And _⌊they were very distressed_⌋.*

⁶ Now the hand of Yahweh was heavy against the Ashdodites and he destroyed them and struck them with tumors,* both in Ashdod and its territories.

⁹ After they moved it, the hand of Yahweh was against the city, causing a very great confusion, and he struck the men of the city _⌊from the youngest to the oldest_⌋,* causing tumors* to break out on them.

¹¹ So they sent and gathered all the rulers of the Philistines, and they said, "Send away the ark of the God of Israel and let it return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people." For a _⌊deadly confusion_⌋* was throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

¹³ So the Philistines were subdued and they did not come into the territory of Israel again, and the hand of Yahweh was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me. My vigor was changed into the dry heat of summer. Selah

³³ And he consumed their days with futility * their years with terror.*

⁷ For we are brought to an end by your anger, and we hasten off* by your wrath. ⁸ You have put our iniquities before you, our hidden sins into the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all of our days dwindle away in your rage; we complete our years like a sigh.

¹⁴ And you shall see and your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall _⌊flourish_⌋* like the grass, and the hand of Yahweh shall make itself known _⌊to_⌋* his servants, and he shall curse his enemies.

²³ But Sihon did not allow Israel to go through his territory. Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel; he came to the desert, to Jahaz, and he fought against Israel.

¹ An oracle of Moab:
Because Ar is devastated in a night, Moab is destroyed; because Kir of Moab is devastated in a night, it is destroyed.

³⁶ And the two daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father. ³⁷ The firstborn gave birth to a son, and she called his name Moab. He is the father of Moab until this day. ³⁸ And the younger, she also gave birth to a son, and she called his name Ben-Ammi. He is the father of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* until this day.

⁹ And Yahweh said to me, 'You shall not attack Moab, and you shall not engage in war* with them, for I will not give you any of his land as a possession; I have given Ar to the descendants* of Lot as a possession.'

¹³ And the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* said to Jephthah's messengers, "Because Israel took my land from the Arnon up to the Jabbok and the Jordan when they came up from Egypt; so then, restore it peacefully." ¹⁴ Once again Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* ¹⁵ and he said to him, "Thus says Jephthah, 'Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* ¹⁶ because when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* and went to Kadesh. ¹⁷ Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Please let us cross through your land," but the king of Edom would not listen. And they also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he was not willing. So Israel stayed in Kadesh. ¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to _⌊the east_⌋* side of the land of Moab, and they* encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab. ¹⁹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites,* king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, 'Please let us cross through your land _⌊to our country_⌋.'* ²⁰ But Sihon did not trust Israel to cross through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people and then encamped at Jahaz; and he made war with Israel. ²¹ And Yahweh, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them; and Israel occupied all the land of the Amorites* inhabiting that land. ²² They occupied all the territory of the Amorites* from the Arnon up to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness up to the Jordan. ²³ So then Yahweh, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites* from before his people Israel, and you want to possess it? ²⁴ Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gave you to possess? Whoever Yahweh our God has driven out before us, we will possess it. ²⁵ So then, are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel, or did he ever make war against them? ²⁶ When Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns that are _⌊along the Arnon_⌋,* for three hundred years,* why did you not recover them at that time? ²⁷ I have not sinned against you; but you are the one who is doing wrong by making war against me. _⌊Let Yahweh judge_⌋* today between the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋."*

¹⁰ (The Emim previously lived in it, a people large,* numerous, and tall, like the Anakites. ¹¹ They were reckoned also as Rephaim as the Anakites were; but the Moabites called them Emim.

¹¹ (For only Og, king of Bashan, was left from the remnant of the Rephaim. Indeed, his bedstead—it was a bedstead of iron. It is in Rabbah of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* Nine cubits is its length, and four cubits is its width according to the cubit of a man.)

²⁴ Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gave you to possess? Whoever Yahweh our God has driven out before us, we will possess it.

⁷ And all the nations will serve him, and his son, and _⌊his grandson_⌋,* until the coming of the time of _⌊his own_⌋* land. Then many nations and great kings will let him work. ⁸ "But it will be that the nation or kingdom that will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put his neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, and with the famine, and with the plague," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "until I have destroyed it with my hand.

¹⁰ And they themselves scoff at kings and rulers are a joke to them. They laugh at every fortification, and they heap up earth and take it. ¹¹ Then they sweep like the wind and pass on; they become guilty, whose might is their* god!"

²⁰ These are the sons of Seir, the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ²¹ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. ²² And the sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam. And Lotan's sister was Timna. ²³ Now these are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. ²⁴ Now these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is Anah who found the hot springs in the desert while he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father. ²⁵ Now these are the sons of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ²⁶ Now these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. ²⁷ These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. ²⁸ These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹ These are the chiefs of the Horites: the chiefs Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ³⁰ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.

¹² The Horites previously lived in Seir, but the descendants* of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them _⌊from among themselves_⌋,* as Israel did with respect to the land of their* possession that Yahweh gave to them.)

³⁸ And the sons of Seir: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. ³⁹ And the sons of Lotan: Hori and Homam; and the sister of Lotan was Timna. ⁴⁰ The sons of Shobal: Alian, Manahath, Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. And the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah. ⁴¹ The sons of Anah: Dishon. And the sons of Dishon: Hamran, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. ⁴² The sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Jaakan. ³ from the Shihor, which is _⌊east of Egypt_⌋,* up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites,* Ashdodites,* Ashkelonites,* Gittites,* Ekronites,* and the Avvim.

²⁴ For he was ruling over all the west of the River* from Tiphsah up to Gaza, over all the kings west of the River;* and he had peace from every side all around.

²⁰ and all the other* people; and all the kings of the land of Uz; and all the kings of the land of the Philistines—*Ashkelon, and Gaza, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;

⁴ Because of the day that is coming to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and from Sidon every survivor who could help, for Yahweh is destroying the Philistines, the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.

⁷ "Are you not like the Cushites to me, O people of Israel?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt and the Philistines from Caphtor and _⌊the Arameans_⌋* from Kir?

⁴ For Gaza will be abandoned, and Ashkelon as a desolation. As for Ashdod, at noon they will drive her away, and Ekron shall be uprooted.

⁵ Ashkelon will see and will be afraid, and Gaza will writhe exceedingly, and Ekron also, because its hope is ruined.* And the king from Gaza will perish, and Ashkelon will not be inhabited.

¹³ From there they set out and encamped beyond Arnon, which is in the desert that goes out from the boundary of the Amorites,* because Arnon is the boundary of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.* ¹⁴ Therefore thus it is said in the scroll of the Wars of Yahweh,
"Waheb in Suphah, and the wadis of Arnon, ¹⁵ and the slope of the wadis that spreads out to the dwelling of Ar and lies at the boundary of Moab."

³⁶ From Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon and the city that was in the wadi* on up to Gilead, there was not a city that was inaccessible to us; Yahweh our God gave _⌊everything_⌋* _⌊to us_⌋.*

¹⁶ And at the seventh time the priests blew on the trumpets, and Joshua said to the people, "Shout! For Yahweh has given you the city.

¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to _⌊the east_⌋* side of the land of Moab, and they* encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab. ¹⁹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites,* king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, 'Please let us cross through your land _⌊to our country_⌋.'* ²⁰ But Sihon did not trust Israel to cross through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people and then encamped at Jahaz; and he made war with Israel. ²¹ And Yahweh, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them; and Israel occupied all the land of the Amorites* inhabiting that land.

²³ "Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia: 'Yahweh the God of heaven has given to me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has appointed me to build a house for him at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you from all his people, may Yahweh his God go up with him.'"

² "Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: Yahweh, the God of the heavens, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth. And he himself has appointed me to build a house for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

²⁰ As his wages that he worked for, I will give to him the land of Egypt, because they worked for me," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

³⁸ and also _⌊human beings wherever they dwell_⌋,* the animals of the field and the birds* of heaven*—he has given into your hand and made you ruler over all of them—you are the head of gold.

¹⁷ The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the decision by the command of the holy ones, _⌊in order that_⌋* the living will know that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdom of humankind, and _⌊to whomever_⌋* he wills he gives it, and he even sets the humblest of men over it."

¹⁴ Peoples heard; they trembled; anguish seized the inhabitants of Philistia. ¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were horrified; great distress seized the leaders of Moab; all of the inhabitants of Canaan melted away. ¹⁶ Terror and dread fell on them; at the greatness of your arm they became silent like the stone, until your people passed by, Yahweh, until the people whom you bought passed by.

²⁷ " 'I will release my terror before you, and I will throw into confusion all the people against whom you come, and I will _⌊make all your enemies turn their back to you_⌋.*

²⁵ No one can take a stand _⌊against you_⌋;* your dread and your fear Yahweh your God will put on the _⌊surface_⌋* of all the land _⌊where you tread_⌋,* just as he _⌊promised_⌋* to you.

¹⁰ And all of the peoples of the earth shall see that _⌊by the name of Yahweh you are called_⌋,* and _⌊they shall fear you_⌋.*

⁹ and said to the men, "I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of your presence. ¹⁰ For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the waters of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* before you when you went out from Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. ¹¹ We heard this, and our hearts* melted, and _⌊no courage was left in anyone_⌋* because of your presence. For Yahweh your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below. ¹² So then please swear to me by Yahweh, because _⌊I have shown loyalty to you_⌋,* and _⌊you will also show loyalty_⌋* _⌊to my family_⌋.* You must give me a sign of good faith,*

²⁴ And they answered Joshua and said, "Because it was told with certainty to your servants that Yahweh your God commanded Moses his servant to give to you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before you, so we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and so we did this thing.

⁶ Now the Lord had caused the camp of the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots, the sound of horses, and the sound of a great army. So they said _⌊to one another_⌋,* "Look, the king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to come against us!" ⁷ So they got up and fled at dusk and left their tents, their horses, their donkeys, and the camp as it was, and they fled for their lives.

³⁸ Egypt was glad when they departed, because the fear of them* had fallen upon them.

⁹ And it will be to me a name of jubilation, a praise, and a glory before all the nations of the earth, who will hear all the good that I will do for them, and they will fear,* and they will tremble because of all the good, and because of all the prosperity that I will provide for it.'

⁹ Behold, I am causing those of the synagogue of Satan, the ones who call themselves Jews and are not, but are lying—behold, I will make them _⌊come_⌋* and kneel down before your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.

¹⁰ "When you approach a city to fight against it, _⌊you must offer it peace_⌋.* ¹¹ _⌊And then_⌋* if _⌊they accept your terms of peace_⌋* and _⌊they surrender to you_⌋,* _⌊and then_⌋* all the people _⌊inhabiting it_⌋* shall be forced labor for you, and they shall serve you.

¹⁸ Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,

³⁷ Kedemoth and its pasturelands, and Mephaath and its pasturelands; four cities.

³⁰ He sent letters of words of peace and truth to all the Jews, to the one hundred and twenty-seven provinces* of Ahasuerus' kingdom,

¹² And when you* enter into the house, greet it. ¹³ And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. ¹⁴ And whoever does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you* are going out of that house or that* town. ¹⁵ Truly I say to you, it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town!

⁵ And into whatever house you enter, first say, "Peace be to this household!" ⁶ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him. But if not, it will return to you.

¹⁰ But into whatever town you enter and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and* say, ¹¹ "Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you! Nevertheless know this: that the kingdom of God has come near!"* ¹² I tell you that it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town!

²¹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites,* saying, ²² "Let us go through your land; we will not turn aside into a field or vineyard; we will not drink well water along the way of the king until we have gone through your territory." ²³ But Sihon did not allow Israel to go through his territory. Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel; he came to the desert, to Jahaz, and he fought against Israel.

⁶ You shall buy food from them so that you may eat; and also you shall purchase water from them with money so that you may drink.

¹⁹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites,* king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, 'Please let us cross through your land _⌊to our country_⌋.'*

¹² "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days can be long on the land that Yahweh your God is giving you.

¹⁸ Then Edom said to him, "You will not pass through us* lest _⌊we will go out_⌋* to meet you with the sword."

¹ "Now, Israel, listen to the rules and to the regulations that I am teaching you to do, in order that you may live and you may go in and you may take possession of the land that Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,* is giving to you.

²¹ "And Yahweh was angry with me _⌊because of you_⌋,* and he swore _⌊that I would not cross the Jordan_⌋* and _⌊that I would not go to the good land_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance.

⁴⁰ And you shall keep his rules and his commandments that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* so that _⌊it may go well_⌋* for you and for your children* after you, and so that _⌊you may remain a long time_⌋* on the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you during all of those days."

¹⁶ 'Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you, so that it will be good for you* _⌊in the land_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving to you.

⁶ "So you should understand that it is not because of your righteousness that Yahweh your God is giving you this good land to take possession of it, because _⌊you are a stubborn people_⌋. *

³ An Ammonite or a Moabite may not come into the assembly of Yahweh; even to the tenth generation none _⌊of his descendants_⌋* may come into the assembly of Yahweh _⌊forever_⌋,* ⁴ _⌊because_⌋* they did not come to meet you with food and with water _⌊when you came out of Egypt_⌋,* and also _⌊because_⌋* they* hired Balaam, son of Beor, from Pethor, in Aram Naharaim* to act against you to curse you.

¹⁵ Rather a full and honest weight shall be _⌊for your use_⌋;* there shall be for you a full and honest _⌊measure_⌋,* so that your days on the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you may be long.

¹¹ "Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people: 'Prepare your provisions;* _⌊in_⌋* three days you are to cross the Jordan to go possess the land that Yahweh your God is giving you to possess.'" ¹² To the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, ¹³ "Remember the word that Moses Yahweh's servant commanded you, saying, 'Yahweh your God is giving rest to you, and he is giving* you this land.' ¹⁴ Your wives, your little children, and your livestock, they will remain in the land that Moses gave to you beyond the Jordan. _⌊All of the best fighting men_⌋* will cross armed in front of your families; they will help you ¹⁵ until Yahweh gives rest to your families as well as to you. They will take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving to them. Then you will return to your own land and take possession of it, the land that Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan _⌊to the east_⌋."*

¹⁷ Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Please let us cross through your land," but the king of Edom would not listen. ²¹ And Yahweh said to Moses, "When you go to return to Egypt, see all of the wonders that I have put in your hand, and do them before Pharaoh, and I myself will harden his heart, and he will not release the people.

¹⁰ And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, and Yahweh hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not release the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from his land.

¹⁹ There was not a city that made peace with the _⌊Israelites_⌋* besides the Hivites* and the inhabitants of Gibeon—_⌊all were taken in battle_⌋.* ²⁰ For it was Yahweh that _⌊hardened their hearts_⌋,* to meet Israel in war in order to utterly destroy them without mercy, that they would destroy them just as Yahweh commanded Moses.

²⁰ But Sihon did not trust Israel to cross through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people and then encamped at Jahaz; and he made war with Israel.

⁴ because _⌊I know_⌋* that you are obstinate, and your neck an iron sinew, and your forehead bronze.

¹⁷ For the scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very reason I have raised you up, so that I may demonstrate my power in you, and so that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."* ¹⁸ Consequently therefore, he has mercy on whomever he wishes, and he hardens whomever he wishes. ¹⁹ Therefore you will say to me, "Why then does he still find fault? For who has resisted* his will? ²⁰ On the contrary, O man, who are you who answers back to God? Will what is molded say to the one who molded it, "Why did you make me like this"?* ²¹ Or does the potter not have authority over the clay, to make from the same lump a vessel that is for _⌊honorable use_⌋* and one that is for _⌊ordinary use_⌋*? ²² And what if God, wanting to demonstrate his wrath and to make known his power, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? ²³ And he did so* in order that he could make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy that he prepared beforehand for glory,

⁸ Look, I have set the land _⌊before you_⌋;* go and take possession of the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,* to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it to them and to their offspring after them.'

²⁴ Arise,* set out and cross over the wadi* of Arnon. Look! I have given Sihon the Amorite, the king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand; begin to take possession of it, and engage with him in battle.

²³ But Sihon did not allow Israel to go through his territory. Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel; he came to the desert, to Jahaz, and he fought against Israel. ²⁴ But Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and they took possession of his land from Arnon to Jabbok, until the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* because the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* was strong. ²⁵ Israel took all these cities, and Israel inhabited all the cities of the Amorites,* in Heshbon, and in all its environs.* ²⁶ Because Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand until Arnon. ²⁷ Thus the ones who quote proverbs say,
"Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! And let the city of Sihon be established. ²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the* high places of Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, people of Chemosh. He has given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, to the king of the Amorites,* Sihon. ³⁰ We destroyed them; Heshbon has perished up to Dibon; we laid waste up to Nophah, which _⌊reaches_⌋* Medeba."

²⁰ But Sihon did not trust Israel to cross through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people and then encamped at Jahaz; and he made war with Israel. ²¹ And Yahweh, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them; and Israel occupied all the land of the Amorites* inhabiting that land. ²² They occupied all the territory of the Amorites* from the Arnon up to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness up to the Jordan. ²³ So then Yahweh, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites* from before his people Israel, and you want to possess it?

²² And you gave them kingdoms and nations and allotted them a portion. They took into possession the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan.

⁷ I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.

¹¹ Sihon the king of the Amorites, and Og the king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan—

¹⁹ Sihon the king of the Amorites, for his loyal love endures forever.

²⁰ And blessed be God Most High who delivered your enemies into your hand."
And he* gave to him a tenth of everything.

²⁴ But Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and they took possession of his land from Arnon to Jabbok, until the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* because the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* was strong.

² And Yahweh said to me, 'You should not fear him, for I have given him and all of his army* and his land into your hand. And so you will do to him as you did to Sihon the king of the Amorites,* who was reigning in Heshbon.' ³ And so Yahweh our God also gave Og the king of Bashan, and all of his army* into our hand, and we struck him down until not a survivor remained to* him.

² and Yahweh your God will give them _⌊over to you_⌋* and you defeat them, you must _⌊utterly destroy them_⌋;* you shall not make a covenant with them, and you shall not show mercy to them.

¹⁶ But from the cities of these peoples that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance, you shall not let anything live that breathes.*

⁷ And when you came to this place then Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out to meet you for battle, and we defeated them. ⁸ And we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites* and to the Gadites* and to the half-tribe of Manasseh.

³⁰ And Yahweh also gave it into the hand of Israel, and its king and all the people in it he struck with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋.* He left in it no survivor. He did to its king just as he did to the king of Jericho. ³¹ And Joshua passed on, and all of Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and _⌊he laid siege to it_⌋* and fought against it. ³² And Yahweh gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day. He struck it with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* and everyone in it, just as he did to Libnah. ³³ Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish, and Joshua struck him and his people until he left no survivor behind. ³⁴ And Joshua passed on, and all of Israel with him, from Lachish to Eglon, and _⌊they laid siege to it_⌋* and fought against it. ³⁵ And they captured it on that day, and he struck it with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* and all the people that were in it on that day he utterly destroyed as he had done to Lachish. ³⁶ And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron, and they fought against it ³⁷ and captured it, and they struck it with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* its king and all its cities, and all the people that were in it; he left behind no survivor, as he had done to Eglon, and he utterly destroyed it and all the people that were in it. ³⁸ Then Joshua returned to Debir, and all of Israel with him, and they fought against it, ³⁹ and he captured it and its king and all its cities, and they struck them with _⌊the the edge of the sword_⌋,* and they utterly destroyed all the people that were in it; he left behind no survivor, just as he had done to Hebron. Thus he did to Debir and its king what he had done to Libnah and its king. ⁴⁰ So Joshua struck all the land—the hill country, the Negev,* the Shephelah,* and the slopes*—and all their kings; he left behind no survivor, and _⌊all that breathed_⌋* he utterly destroyed as Yahweh the God of Israel commanded. ⁴¹ Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen up to Gibeon; ⁴² all of these kings and their land Joshua captured at one time, because Yahweh the God of Israel fought for Israel.

⁴⁴ Yahweh gave them rest on every side, according to all that he had sworn to their ancestors,* and nobody from all their enemies withstood them, for Yahweh had given all their enemies into their hand.

⁴ And Judah went up, and Yahweh gave the Canaanites* and the Perizzites* into their hand, and they defeated ten thousand men at Bezek.

² And Yahweh said to Gideon, "The troops that are with you are too many for me to give Midian into their hands; Israel will boast, saying, 'My hand has delivered me.'

²⁸ However, anything devoted* that a man has devoted to Yahweh _⌊from all that he has_⌋,* from human or* animal, or* from the field of his property, may not be sold, and it may not be redeemed; anything devoted is _⌊a most holy thing_⌋* for Yahweh. ²⁹ Anyone devoted who is devoted from _⌊human beings_⌋* cannot be ransomed—he shall surely be put to death.

² Israel made a vow to Yahweh, and they said, "If you will surely give this people into our* hand, then we* _⌊will destroy_⌋* their cities." ³ Yahweh heard the voice of Israel; he gave to them the Canaanites, and _⌊they destroyed them_⌋* and their cities. They called the name of the place Hormah.

⁶ And so we destroyed them just as we had done to Sihon the king of Heshbon; we destroyed utterly each town of males, the women, and the little children.

²⁶ And you must not bring a detestable thing into your house, or you will become a thing devoted to destruction like it; you must utterly detest it, and you must utterly abhor it, for it is an object devoted to destruction.

¹⁶ But from the cities of these peoples that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance, you shall not let anything live that breathes.* ¹⁷ Rather, you shall utterly destroy them, the Hittites* and the Amorites,* the Canaanites* and the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites,* just as Yahweh your God has commanded you, ¹⁸ so that they may not teach you to do like all their detestable things that they do for their gods and thereby you sin against Yahweh your God.

¹¹ Israel has sinned and _⌊transgressed my covenant_⌋* that I commanded them. They have taken from the devoted things;* they have stolen and acted deceitfully, and they have put them among their belongings.

²⁵ All the people that fell on that day, both men and women, were twelve thousand—all the inhabitants of Ai. ²⁶ For Joshua did not draw back his hand that was stretched out with the sword until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

¹⁴ And all the spoil and livestock of these cities the _⌊Israelites_⌋ took as booty; they struck the people with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* until they had destroyed them—they left behind no one who breathed.

³ So then, go and attack Amalek and utterly destroy all that is his! You must not spare him, but kill both man and woman, both child and nursing infant, both ox and sheep, both camel and donkey.'"

⁸ He captured Agag the king of Amalek alive, but all the people he utterly destroyed with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword. ⁹ However, Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and the cattle and the second best of the young fatlings and _⌊all that was valuable_⌋;* they were not willing to utterly destroy them. But all the possessions that were despised or worthless, they utterly destroyed.

⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* took captive the women of Midian and their children, and they plundered all their domestic animals and all their livestock and all their wealth. ¹⁰ They burned all their cities where they dwelled and all their camps with fire. ¹¹ They took all the plunder and all the war-booty with the humans* and domestic animals.*

¹⁴ Only the women and the little children and the domestic animals* and all that shall be in the city, all of its spoil you may loot for yourselves, and you may enjoy the spoil of your enemies that Yahweh you God has given to you.

²⁷ Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as booty for themselves, according to the word of Yahweh that Joshua commanded.

¹² And so we took possession of this land at that time, from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, and also half of the hill country of Gilead and its towns I gave to the Reubenites* and to the Gadites.*

⁴⁸ from Aroer, which is on the bank of the wadi* of Arnon and as far as Mount Sirion; that is, Hermon,

⁵ No one will stand before you* all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will not fail you, and I will not forsake you.

² Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, from the middle of the valley and half of Gilead, up to the _⌊Jabbok River_⌋,* which marks the border of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋;*

⁹ from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, and the city which is in the middle of the wadi, and all the plateau from Medeba up to Dibon;

¹⁶ Their territory was from Aroer, which was on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plateau by Medeba;

³ For not with their sword did they possess the land, and their arm did not give them victory. Rather it was your right hand and your arm and the light of your presence, because you delighted in them.

² The cities of Aroer will be deserted;* they will be for the flocks, and they will lie down and _⌊no one will frighten_⌋* them.

¹⁵ Look! I will make you into a new sharp threshing sledge, _⌊with_⌋* sharp edges. You shall thresh and crush the mountains, and you shall make the hills like chaff. ¹⁶ You shall winnow them and the wind shall carry them, and the tempest shall scatter them. And you yourself shall rejoice in Yahweh; you shall boast in the holy one of Israel.

¹⁹ Stand by the road and watch, O inhabitant of Aroer. Ask the man who is fleeing and the woman who is escaping, say, 'What has happened?'

³¹ What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

²² That night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

¹⁹ When you approach _⌊the border of_⌋* the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* you shall not harass them, and you shall not get involved in battle with them, for I have not given the land of _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* to you as a possession; because I have given it to the descendants* of Lot as a possession.

¹⁶ And to the Reubenites* and to the Gadites* I gave, from Gilead up to the wadi* of Arnon, the middle of the wadi* as a boundary and up to the Jabbok _⌊River_⌋,* the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.*

¹⁵ and he said to him, "Thus says Jephthah, 'Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,*
