¹ * These are the words of the covenant that Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the land of Moab _⌊besides_⌋* the covenant that he made with them at Horeb. ² And Moses summoned all of Israel and said to them, "You saw all that Yahweh did before your eyes in the land of Egypt and to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land; ³ that is, the great trials that your eyes saw, and those great signs and wonders. ⁴ But Yahweh has not given to you a heart to understand, or eyes to see, or ears to hear, even _⌊to this day_⌋.* ⁵ And I have led you forty years* in the desert; your clothes have not worn out _⌊on you_⌋,* and your sandal has not worn out _⌊on your foot_⌋.* ⁶ You have not eaten bread, and you have not drunk wine and strong drink, so that you may know that I am Yahweh your God. ⁷ And when you came to this place then Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out to meet you for battle, and we defeated them. ⁸ And we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites* and to the Gadites* and to the half-tribe of Manasseh. ⁹ And _⌊you must diligently observe the words of this covenant_⌋,* so that you may succeed in all that you do. ¹⁰ "You are standing _⌊today_⌋,* all of you, _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God, your leaders, your tribes, your elders, and your officials, all the men of Israel, ¹¹ your little children, your women and your aliens* who are in the midst of your camp, from the choppers* of your wood to the drawers* of your water, ¹² _⌊in order for you to enter into the covenant of Yahweh your God_⌋,* and into* his oath that Yahweh your God is _⌊making with you_⌋* _⌊today_⌋,* ¹³ in order to establish you _⌊today_⌋* _⌊to himself_⌋* as a people and so that he may be for you as God, just as he _⌊promised_⌋* to you and _⌊just as_⌋* he swore to your ancestors,* to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. ¹⁴ "Now I am not _⌊making this covenant_⌋* and this oath _⌊with you alone_⌋.* ¹⁵ But with _⌊whoever is standing here_⌋* with us _⌊today_⌋* _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh our God, and with _⌊whoever is not standing here_⌋* with us _⌊today_⌋.* ¹⁶ For you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we traveled through the midst of the nations that you traveled* through. ¹⁷ And you have seen their detestable things and their idols of wood and stone, silver, and gold that were among them, ¹⁸ so that _⌊there is not_⌋* among you a man or a woman or a clan or a tribe _⌊whose heart_⌋* turns _⌊today_⌋* from being with Yahweh our God to go to serve the gods of these nations, so that there is not among you a root sprouting poison and wormwood. ¹⁹ And then when he hears the words of this oath, then* _⌊he will assure himself_⌋* in his heart, _⌊saying_⌋,* '_⌊Safety shall be mine even though I go in the stubbornness of my heart_⌋,'* thereby destroying the well-watered land along with the parched.* ²⁰ Yahweh will not be willing to forgive him, for by then the anger of Yahweh will smoke, and his passion against that man and all the curses written in this scroll will descend on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under heaven. ²¹ And Yahweh will single him out for calamity out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in the scroll of this law. ²² "And the next generation, that is, your children who will rise up after you, and the foreigner who will come from a distant land, when* they will see the plagues of that land and its diseases that Yahweh has inflicted upon it, will say, ²³ 'All its land is brimstone and salt left by fire, _⌊none of its land will be sown_⌋,* and it will not make plants sprout out and it will not grow any vegetation; it is as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Adman and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overturned in his anger and in his wrath.' ²⁴ And all the nations will say, '_⌊Why_⌋* has Yahweh done _⌊such a thing_⌋* to this land? What caused the fierceness of this great anger?' ²⁵ And they will say,* 'It is because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* which he _⌊made_⌋* with them _⌊when he brought them out_⌋* from the land of Egypt. ²⁶ And they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods whom they did not know them and he* had not allotted to them. ²⁷ So _⌊the anger of Yahweh was kindled_⌋* against that land to bring upon it all the curses written in this scroll, ²⁸ and Yahweh uprooted them from their land in anger and in wrath and in great fury, and he cast them into another land, _⌊just as it is today_⌋.'* ²⁹ "The hidden things _⌊belong to Yahweh_⌋* our God, but the revealed things _⌊belong to us_⌋* to know and to our children _⌊forever_⌋,* in order to do all the words of this law."

³ And Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him from the mountain, saying, "Thus you will say to the house of Jacob and you will tell the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* ⁴ 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I bore you on eagles' wings and I brought you to me. ⁵ And now if you will carefully listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you will be a treasured possession for me out of all the peoples, _⌊for all the earth is mine_⌋,*

² And Moses _⌊alone_⌋* will come near to Yahweh, and they will not come near, and the people will not go up with him." ³ And Moses came, and he told the people all the words of Yahweh and all the regulations. And all the people answered with one voice, and they said, "All the words that Yahweh has spoken we will do." ⁴ And Moses wrote all the words of Yahweh, and he rose early in the morning, and he built an altar at the base of the mountain and set up twelve memorial stones for the twelve tribes of Israel. ⁵ And he sent young men from the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and they offered burnt offerings, and they sacrificed sacrifices as fellowship offerings to Yahweh using bulls. ⁶ And Moses took half of the blood, and he put it in bowls, and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. ⁷ And he took the scroll of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people, and they said, "All that Yahweh has spoken we will do, and we will listen."* ⁸ And Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and he said, "Look, the blood of the covenant that Yahweh has made with you in accordance with all these words."

⁴⁴ And _⌊in spite of_⌋* this, _⌊when they are_⌋* in the land of their enemies I will not reject them, and I will not abhor them to destroy them, to break my covenant with them, because I am Yahweh their God. ⁴⁵ And I will remember the first covenant for them*—whom I brought out from the land of Egypt _⌊in the sight of_⌋* the nations _⌊to be their God_⌋.* I am Yahweh.'"

¹⁰ Remember the day that you stood _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God at Horeb _⌊when Yahweh said to me_⌋,* 'Summon for me the people so that I can tell them my words, that they may learn to fear me all of the days they are alive on the earth and so that they may teach their children.'

¹³ And he declared to you his covenant, _⌊the Ten Commandments_⌋,* which he charged you _⌊to observe_⌋,* and he wrote them on the two tablets of stone.

²³ Watch out for yourselves so that you do not forget the covenant of Yahweh your God that he had _⌊made_⌋* with you and make for yourselves a divine image of the form of anything that Yahweh your God _⌊has forbidden_⌋,*

² Yahweh our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. ³ It was not with our ancestors* that Yahweh made this covenant, but with these of us who are here alive today.

¹² _⌊in order for you to enter into the covenant of Yahweh your God_⌋,* and into* his oath that Yahweh your God is _⌊making with you_⌋* _⌊today_⌋,*

²¹ And Yahweh will single him out for calamity out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in the scroll of this law.

²⁵ And they will say,* 'It is because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* which he _⌊made_⌋* with them _⌊when he brought them out_⌋* from the land of Egypt.

³ Then the king stood by the pillar, and he _⌊made_⌋* a covenant before Yahweh, to go after Yahweh and to keep his commands and his warnings and his statutes, with all of his heart and with his all of his soul, to keep the words of this covenant written on this scroll. Then all of the people _⌊joined_⌋* in the covenant.

² "Hear the words of this covenant, and speak to the _⌊people_⌋* of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

⁶ And Yahweh said to me, "Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Hear the words of this covenant and do them,

³² not like the covenant that I _⌊made_⌋* with their ancestors* on the day of my grasping them* by their hand, bringing them out from the land of Egypt, my covenant that they themselves broke, though I myself was a master over them," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁸ And I will make the men who transgressed my covenant, who have not kept the words of the covenant that they _⌊made_⌋* _⌊before me_⌋,* like the calf which they cut in two and they passed between its parts—

²⁵ You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God ordained with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed.'*

⁹ not like the covenant which I made with their fathers on the day I took hold of them by my hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not continue in my covenant and I disregarded them, says the Lord.

¹² And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried out to Yahweh over the matter of the frogs that he had brought on Pharaoh.

⁴ 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I bore you on eagles' wings and I brought you to me.

⁵ And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in its midst; and afterward I brought you out. ⁶ When I brought out your ancestors* from Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued after your ancestors* with chariots* and horsemen to the _⌊Red Sea_⌋.*

⁴³ how he performed* his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the region of Zoan, ⁴⁴ when he turned their rivers* to blood so they could not drink from their streams. ⁴⁵ He sent among them flies that devoured them and frogs that destroyed them. ⁴⁶ And he gave their crop to the locusts and their labor to the locust.* ⁴⁷ He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore trees with sleet.* ⁴⁸ He also handed their cattle over to the hail and their livestock to the lightning bolts. ⁴⁹ He sent against them his fierce anger, rage and indignation and trouble, a band of _⌊destroying_⌋* angels. ⁵⁰ He cleared a path for his anger. He did not spare them* from death but handed their life over to the plague. ⁵¹ And he struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, the first of their virility in the tents of Ham.

²⁷ They set before them the words concerning his signs and portents in the land of Ham. ²⁸ He sent darkness and made it dark, and they did not rebel against his words. ²⁹ He turned their waters into blood and it killed their fish. ³⁰ Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings. ³¹ He spoke, and there came flies and gnats throughout all their territory.* ³² He gave hail for their rains and the fire of lightning in their land. ³³ And he struck their vines and fig trees, and shattered the trees of their territory. ³⁴ He spoke and there came locusts and young locusts without number. ³⁵ And they ate up all the vegetation in their land, and they ate up the fruit of their ground. ³⁶ And he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the first of all their virility.

³² "Yes, ask, please, about former days that _⌊preceded you_⌋* from the day that God created humankind on the earth; ask even from one end of the heaven up to the other end of heaven _⌊whether anything ever happened_⌋* like this great thing or _⌊whether anything like it was ever heard_⌋.* ³³ Has a people ever heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, just as you heard it, and lived? ³⁴ Or has a god ever attempted to go to take for himself* a nation from the midst of a nation, using trials and signs and wonders and war, with an outstretched arm and with great and awesome deeds, like all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? ³⁵ You yourselves* were shown this wonder in order for you to acknowledge that Yahweh is the God;* there is no other God _⌊besides him_⌋.*

¹⁸ then remember you must not be afraid of them; you must well remember what Yahweh your God did to Pharaoh and to all of Egypt: ¹⁹ the great trials that your eyes saw and the signs and the wonders and the workings of the strong hand and the outstretched arm by which Yahweh your God brought you out; so Yahweh your God will do to all of the peoples _⌊because of whom_⌋* you are in fear _⌊before them_⌋.*

⁹ "You saw the misery of our ancestors* in Egypt, and you heard their shout at the Red Sea. ¹⁰ You gave signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all of his servants, and all of the people of his land because you knew that they acted arrogantly against them. You made a name for yourself, as it is this day. ¹¹ And you divided the sea before them, and they passed through the sea on dry ground, but their pursuers you threw into the depths like a stone into mighty waters.

³⁰ But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us cross through his territory because Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and _⌊made him obstinate_⌋* _⌊in order to give him_⌋* into your hand, _⌊just as he has now done_⌋.*

¹² The ear that hears and the eye that sees, Yahweh has made _⌊them both_⌋.*

⁹ And he said, "Go and say to this people,
'Keep on listening and do not comprehend! And keep on looking and do not understand!' ¹⁰ Make the heart of this people insensitive, and make its ears unresponsive, and shut its eyes so that it may not look with its eyes and listen with its ears and comprehend with its mind and turn back, and it may be healed for him."

¹⁷ Why do you make us wander, Yahweh? You harden our heart from your ways _⌊so that we do not fear_⌋* you. Turn back for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance.

²⁶ And I will give a new heart to you, and a new spirit I will give* into your inner parts, and I will remove the* heart of stone from your flesh, and I will give to you a heart of flesh.

¹¹ And he answered and* said to them, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to those people it has not been granted. ¹² For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have an abundance. But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. ¹³ For this reason I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand, ¹⁴ and with reference to them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says,
"_⌊You will listen carefully_⌋* and will never understand, and _⌊you will look closely_⌋* and will never perceive. ¹⁵ For the heart of this people has become dull, and with their ears they hear with difficulty, and they have shut their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them."*

⁴³ _⌊Why_⌋* do you not understand my way of speaking? Because you are not able to listen to my message.

³⁸ in order that the word of the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled, who said,
"Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"* ³⁹ For this reason they were not able to believe, because again Isaiah said, ⁴⁰ "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they see with their* eyes and understand with their* hearts and turn, and I heal them."*

²⁶ saying,
'Go to this people and say, "_⌊You will keep on hearing_⌋* and will never understand, and _⌊you will keep on seeing_⌋* and will never perceive. ²⁷ For the heart of this people has become dull, and with their* ears they hear with difficulty, and they have shut their eyes, lest they see with their* eyes, and hear with their* ears, and understand with their* heart, and turn, and I would heal them." '*

⁷ What then? What Israel was searching for, this it did not obtain. But the elect obtained it, and the rest were hardened, ⁸ just as it is written,
"God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear, until this very day."* ⁹ And David says,
"Let their table become a snare and a trap, and a cause for stumbling and a retribution to them; ¹⁰ let their eyes be darkened so that they do not see, and cause their backs to bend _⌊continually_⌋*."*

¹⁵ But until today, whenever Moses is read aloud, a veil lies upon their heart,

¹⁸ being darkened in understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart,

¹⁰ and with every unrighteous deception against those who are perishing, in place of which they did not accept the love of the truth, so that they would be saved. ¹¹ And because of this, God sends them _⌊a powerful delusion_⌋* so that they will believe the lie, ¹² in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth, but delighted in unrighteousness.

²⁵ correcting those who are opposed with gentleness, seeing whether perhaps God may grant them repentance to a knowledge of the truth,

¹³ No one who is being tempted should say, "I am being tempted by God," for God _⌊cannot be tempted_⌋* by evil, and he himself tempts no one. ¹⁴ But each one is tempted when he* is dragged away and enticed by his own desires. ¹⁵ Then desire, after it* has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it* is brought to completion, gives birth to death. ¹⁶ Do not be deceived, my dear brothers. ¹⁷ Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of change.

³ _⌊And it was_⌋* in the fortieth year, on the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* according to all that Yahweh had instructed him to speak to them.

² And you shall remember all of the way that Yahweh your God led you during these forty years in the desert in order to humble you and to test you to know what is in your heart, whether you would diligently keep his commandments or not.

⁴ Your clothing did not wear out _⌊on you_⌋,* and your feet did not swell during these forty years.

⁵ The sandals on their feet were patched and old, their clothes were old, and their food was dry and crumbled.

¹³ These are the wineskins that we filled new, but look, they have burst; and these are our clothes and sandals that have worn out from the very long journey."

²¹ Forty years you sustained them in the desert—they were not in need. Their clothing did not wear out and their feet did not swell.

³¹ Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?,' ³² for the pagans seek after all these things. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

¹⁰ Do not take a traveler's bag for the road, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff, for the worker is deserving of his provisions.

¹² "I have heard the grumblings of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* Speak to them, saying, '_⌊At twilight_⌋* you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be full with bread, and you will know that I am Yahweh your God.'"

³⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* ate the manna forty years, until their coming to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until their coming to the border of the land of Canaan.

¹⁴ Surely, you have not brought us to a land that flows with milk and honey, and you have not given us the inheritance of fields and a vineyard. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? We will not come!"*

⁸ "Take the staff and summon the community, you and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will give water. Bring out for them water from the rock, and let the community and their livestock drink."

³ And he humbled you and let you go hungry, and then he fed you with that which you did not know nor did your ancestors* know, in order to make you know that not by bread alone but by all that goes out* of the mouth of Yahweh humankind shall live.

¹⁵ You gave them bread from heaven for their starvation, and you caused water to go out from a rock for their thirst. You told them to go in order to take into possession the land that you have sworn by your hand to give to them.

²⁴ and rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. ²⁵ Humankind ate the bread of _⌊angels_⌋.* He sent them food enough to be satisfied.

²⁵ And everyone who competes exercises self-control in all things. Thus those do so in order that they may receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.

⁴ and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.

¹⁸ And do not be drunk with wine (in which is dissipation), but be filled by the Spirit,

²¹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites,* saying, ²² "Let us go through your land; we will not turn aside into a field or vineyard; we will not drink well water along the way of the king until we have gone through your territory." ²³ But Sihon did not allow Israel to go through his territory. Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel; he came to the desert, to Jahaz, and he fought against Israel. ²⁴ But Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and they took possession of his land from Arnon to Jabbok, until the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* because the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* was strong. ²⁵ Israel took all these cities, and Israel inhabited all the cities of the Amorites,* in Heshbon, and in all its environs.* ²⁶ Because Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand until Arnon. ²⁷ Thus the ones who quote proverbs say,
"Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! And let the city of Sihon be established. ²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the* high places of Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, people of Chemosh. He has given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, to the king of the Amorites,* Sihon. ³⁰ We destroyed them; Heshbon has perished up to Dibon; we laid waste up to Nophah, which _⌊reaches_⌋* Medeba." ³¹ Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.* ³² Moses sent to explore Jaazer; they captured _⌊its environs_⌋* and dispossessed the Amorites* who were there. ³³ Then they turned and went up by the way of the Bashan, and Og king of the Bashan and all his people went out to meet them for battle at Edrei. ³⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Do not fear him because I will give him and all his people and all his land into your hand. You will do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites,* who was living in Heshbon." ³⁵ And so they destroyed him and his sons, and all his people until they had not spared a survivor; and they took possession of his land.

³³ So Moses gave to them, to the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon the king of Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land. ³⁴ The descendants* of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atroth Shophan, Jazer, and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, the cities of Mibzar, and the sheep pens for flocks. ³⁷ The descendants* of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo, Baal Meon (their names* were changed), and Sibmah, and _⌊they renamed_⌋* the cities that they rebuilt. ³⁹ The descendants* of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and they captured it and drove out the Amorites* who were in it. ⁴⁰ So Moses gave Gilead to Makir son of Manasseh, and he lived in it. ⁴¹ And Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their unwalled villages, and he called them Havvoth Jair. ⁴² Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah after his own name.

²⁴ Arise,* set out and cross over the wadi* of Arnon. Look! I have given Sihon the Amorite, the king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand; begin to take possession of it, and engage with him in battle.

¹⁰ Who struck many nations and killed mighty kings— ¹¹ Sihon the king of the Amorites, and Og the king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan— ¹² and he gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance for his people Israel.

¹⁷ To him who struck great kings, for his loyal love endures forever. ¹⁸ And he killed mighty kings, for his loyal love endures forever. ¹⁹ Sihon the king of the Amorites, for his loyal love endures forever. ²⁰ And Og the king of Bashan, for his loyal love endures forever. ²¹ And he gave their land as an inheritance, for his loyal love endures forever. ²² An inheritance to Israel his servant, for his loyal love endures forever.

³³ So Moses gave to them, to the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon the king of Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land.

¹² And so we took possession of this land at that time, from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, and also half of the hill country of Gilead and its towns I gave to the Reubenites* and to the Gadites.* ¹³ And the remainder of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh, the whole region of Argo. All of that area of Bashan was called the land of the Rephaim.

⁶ And _⌊you must observe them diligently_⌋,* for that is your wisdom and your insight before the eyes of the people, who will hear all of these rules, and they will say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people.'

¹ * These are the words of the covenant that Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the land of Moab _⌊besides_⌋* the covenant that he made with them at Horeb.

⁷ Only be strong and very courageous _⌊to observe diligently the whole law_⌋* that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn aside from it, to the right or left, so that you may succeed _⌊wherever you go_⌋.*

³ You shall keep the charge of Yahweh your God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, his commandments, his judgments, and his testimonies, as are written in the law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all that you do and everywhere you turn,

¹⁰ All the paths of Yahweh are loyal love and faithfulness for those who keep his covenant and statutes.*

¹⁷ But the loyal love of Yahweh is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to their children's children, ¹⁸ to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his precepts.

¹ Thus says Yahweh:
"Observe justice and do righteousness, for my salvation is close to coming, and my justice to being revealed. ² Happy is the man who does this, and the son of humankind who keeps hold of it, who keeps the Sabbath _⌊so as not to profane_⌋* it, and who keeps his hand from doing any* evil."

⁴ For thus says Yahweh, "To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, and choose that in which I delight, and who keep hold of my covenant. ⁵ And I will give them a monument and a name in my house and within my walls, better than sons and daughters; I will give him an everlasting name that shall not be cut off. ⁶ And the _⌊foreigners_⌋* who join themselves to Yahweh to serve him and to love the name of Yahweh, to become his servants, every one who keeps the Sabbath, _⌊so as not to profane_⌋* it, and those who keep hold of my covenant, ⁷ I will bring them to _⌊my holy mountain_⌋;* I will make them merry in my house of prayer. their burnt offerings and their sacrifices _⌊will be accepted_⌋* on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples,"

⁵ They will ask the way to Zion, turning their faces there. They will come and join themselves to Yahweh by _⌊an everlasting covenant_⌋* that will not be forgotten.

²⁸ But he said, "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and follow it!"*

²⁰ Now may the God of peace, who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, ²¹ equip you with every good thing to do his will, carrying out in us what is pleasing before him through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory _⌊forever_⌋*.* Amen.

¹² Assemble the people, the men and the women and the little children and your aliens that are in your _⌊towns_⌋,* so that they may hear and so that they may learn and they may revere Yahweh your God, and _⌊they shall diligently observe_⌋* all the words of this law. ¹³ And then their children,* who have not known, they too may hear, and they may learn to revere Yahweh their God all the days _⌊that you live_⌋* on the land that you are crossing the Jordan _⌊to get there_⌋* to take possession of it."

¹⁶ And Jehoiada _⌊made_⌋* a covenant between himself and all the people and the king, that they should be Yahweh's people.

²⁹ Then they sent word to the king, and he gathered all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. ³⁰ And the king went up to the house of Yahweh with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with the priests and the Levites—all the people from great to small—and they read in their ears all the words of the scroll of the covenant that was found in the house of Yahweh. ³¹ And the king stood at his position. And he made the covenant before Yahweh, to walk after Yahweh and to keep his commands and statutes and regulations with all his heart and with all his soul, to do the words of the covenant that were written on this scroll. ³² Then he obligated* all who were found in Jerusalem and in Benjamin, that the inhabitants of Jerusalem would do according to the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors.*

² So Ezra the priest brought the law* before the assembly for each man and woman to hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

¹ On the twenty-fourth day of this month the _⌊Israelites_⌋* gathered in fasting, in sackcloths, and with soil on them. ² Those of the seed of Israel separated themselves from all of the foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors.*

³⁸ * "Now because of all of this we make a binding written agreement and are writing on the sealed documents the names of our commanders, our Levites, and our priests."

²⁸ "The rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple servants, and all who separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to observe the law* of God—their wives, their sons, their daughters, and all who know and understand—

¹⁶ gather the people, consecrate the assembly; assemble the elders, gather the children, even those who are breast-feeding; let the bridegroom come out from his private room, and the bride from her canopy. ¹⁷ Between the colonnade and the altar, let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh, weep. And let them say, "Take pity, Yahweh, on your people. Do not make your inheritance a reproach, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the nations, 'Where is their God?'"

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth, and the most important people, and the military leaders, and the rich, and the powerful, and every slave and free person hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains,

¹² And I saw the dead—the great and the small—standing before the throne, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to their deeds.

³⁸ And also a _⌊mixed multitude_⌋* went up with them and sheep and goats and cattle, very numerous livestock.

⁴⁸ And when an alien dwells with you and he wants to prepare the Passover for Yahweh, every male belonging to him must be circumcised, and then he may come near to prepare it, and he will be as the native of the land, but any uncircumcised man may not eat it. ⁴⁹ One law will be for the native and for the alien who is dwelling in your midst."

⁴ The riff-raff that were in their midst _⌊had a strong desire_⌋;* and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* turned back and also wept, and they said, "Who will feed us meat?

¹⁴ but the seventh day is a Sabbath unto Yahweh your God; you shall not do any work, or your son, or your daughter, or your slave, or your slave woman, or your ox, or your donkey, or any of your domestic animals, or your resident alien who is in your _⌊towns_⌋,* so that your slave and your slave woman may rest as you rest.

²¹ And the leaders* said to them, "Let them live." So they became woodcutters and water carriers for all the congregation, just as the leaders had said to them. ²² And Joshua summoned them and said, "Why have you deceived us saying, 'We are very far from you' when you are living among us? ²³ Therefore you are cursed; some of you will always be slaves as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God." ²⁴ And they answered Joshua and said, "Because it was told with certainty to your servants that Yahweh your God commanded Moses his servant to give to you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before you, so we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and so we did this thing. ²⁵ So then, look, we are in your hand; do with us whatever seems good and right in your eyes." ²⁶ So he did this to them: he saved them from the hand of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and they did not kill them. ²⁷ And that day Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and for the altar of Yahweh, to this day, in the place that he should choose.

²⁸ There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

¹¹ where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, or free, but Christ is all, and in all.

⁵ And now if you will carefully listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you will be a treasured possession for me out of all the peoples, _⌊for all the earth is mine_⌋,* ⁶ but you, you will belong to me as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you will speak to the _⌊Israelites_⌋."*

¹⁴ "Now I am not _⌊making this covenant_⌋* and this oath _⌊with you alone_⌋.*

²⁵ So Joshua _⌊made a covenant_⌋* with the people on that day, and he established for them a statute and a judgment at Shechem.

¹⁷ Then Jehoiada _⌊made_⌋* a covenant between Yahweh and the king and the people, that the people should be as a people for Yahweh, and also a covenant between the king and the people.

¹² And they entered into a covenant to seek Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* with all their heart and with all their inmost being,* ¹³ but all who will not seek Yahweh the God of Israel should be killed, from young to old, from men to women. ¹⁴ And they took an oath to Yahweh with a great voice, with shouting, with trumpets, and with horns. ¹⁵ And all Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they swore with all their heart. And they sought him with their whole desire, and he was found by them, and Yahweh gave rest to them all around.

²⁸ "The rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple servants, and all who separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to observe the law* of God—their wives, their sons, their daughters, and all who know and understand— ²⁹ are helping their brothers, their nobles, and entering into a solemn oath to walk in the law* of God which was given by the hand of Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all of the commandments of Yahweh our Lord and his judgments and regulations.

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and between your offspring after you, throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be as God for you and to your offspring after you.

³ Dwell as an alien in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you, for I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham you father. ⁴ And I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and I will give to your descendants all these lands. And all nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring,

¹³ And behold, Yahweh was standing beside him,* and he said, "I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. The ground on which you were sleeping I will give to you and to your descendants. ¹⁴ Your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, and to the east, and to the north and to the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and through your descendants. ¹⁵ Now behold, I am with you, and I will keep you wherever you go. And I will bring you to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised to you."

⁷ And I will take you _⌊as my people_⌋,* and I will be _⌊your God_⌋,* and you will know that I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out from under the _⌊forced labor_⌋* of Egypt.

⁶ For you are a holy people for Yahweh your God; Yahweh your God has chosen you to be for him a people, a treasured possession from among all the peoples that are on the face* of the earth.

¹⁸ And Yahweh has declared you _⌊today_⌋* to be for him as a people, a treasured possession, as he _⌊promised_⌋* to you, and that you are to observe all his commandments, ¹⁹ _⌊and that he then will set you_⌋* high above all the nations that he has made for his praise and _⌊for fame_⌋* and for honor and _⌊for you to be a holy people_⌋* to Yahweh your God, as he _⌊promised_⌋."*

⁹ Yahweh will establish you for _⌊himself_⌋* as a holy people as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of Yahweh your God and you walk in his ways.

³¹ Look, the days are coming," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and I will _⌊make_⌋* a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, ³² not like the covenant that I _⌊made_⌋* with their ancestors* on the day of my grasping them* by their hand, bringing them out from the land of Egypt, my covenant that they themselves broke, though I myself was a master over them," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ³³ "But this is the covenant that I will _⌊make_⌋* with the house of Israel after those days," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh: "I will put my law in their inward parts and on their hearts* I will write it, and I will be to them God, and they themselves will be to me people.

³⁸ And they will be for me a people, and I will be for them God.

¹⁶ But now they aspire to a better land, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

³¹ Look, the days are coming," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and I will _⌊make_⌋* a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, ³² not like the covenant that I _⌊made_⌋* with their ancestors* on the day of my grasping them* by their hand, bringing them out from the land of Egypt, my covenant that they themselves broke, though I myself was a master over them," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ³³ "But this is the covenant that I will _⌊make_⌋* with the house of Israel after those days," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh: "I will put my law in their inward parts and on their hearts* I will write it, and I will be to them God, and they themselves will be to me people. ³⁴ And they will no longer teach each one his neighbor, or each one his brother, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Know Yahweh,' for all of them will know me, from their _⌊smallest_⌋* and up to their _⌊greatest_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "for I will forgive their iniquity and their sin I will no longer remember."

⁷ For if that first covenant had been faultless, occasion would not have been sought for a second. ⁸ For in finding fault with them he says,
"Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, when I will complete a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, ⁹ not like the covenant which I made with their fathers on the day I took hold of them by my hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not continue in my covenant and I disregarded them, says the Lord. ¹⁰ For this is the covenant that I will decree with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I am putting my laws in their minds and I will write them on their hearts, and I will be _⌊their_⌋* God and they will be _⌊my_⌋* people. ¹¹ And they will not teach each one his fellow citizen and each one his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. ¹² For I will be merciful toward their wrongdoings, and I will not remember their sins any longer."

³ It was not with our ancestors* that Yahweh made this covenant, but with these of us who are here alive today.

³⁹ And I will give to them one heart and one way, to revere me _⌊forever_⌋,* for good to them, and to their children after them.

³⁹ For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all those who are far away, as many as the Lord our God calls to himself."

¹⁴ For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the brother, since otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy.

⁴ and instruct* the people, _⌊saying_⌋,* "You are about to cross through the territory of your brothers, the descendants* of Esau, who are living in Seir; they will be afraid of you, and so be very careful.

⁹ And Yahweh said to me, 'You shall not attack Moab, and you shall not engage in war* with them, for I will not give you any of his land as a possession; I have given Ar to the descendants* of Lot as a possession.'

¹⁹ When you approach _⌊the border of_⌋* the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* you shall not harass them, and you shall not get involved in battle with them, for I have not given the land of _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* to you as a possession; because I have given it to the descendants* of Lot as a possession.

²⁴ Arise,* set out and cross over the wadi* of Arnon. Look! I have given Sihon the Amorite, the king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand; begin to take possession of it, and engage with him in battle.

¹ "Then we turned, and we went up the road to Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us, he and all of his army for the battle at Edrei. ² And Yahweh said to me, 'You should not fear him, for I have given him and all of his army* and his land into your hand. And so you will do to him as you did to Sihon the king of the Amorites,* who was reigning in Heshbon.'

³⁶ Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors* have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone.

¹⁶ _⌊Take care_⌋* so that your heart is not easily deceived, and you turn away, and you serve other gods, and you bow down to them. ¹⁷ And then _⌊the anger of Yahweh will be kindled against you_⌋,* and he will shut up the heavens,* and there shall not be rain, and so the ground will not give its produce, and you will perish quickly from the good land that Yahweh is giving to you.

¹ "If a prophet stands up in your midst or a dreamer of dreams* and he gives to you a sign or wonder, ² and the sign or* the wonder comes about that he spoke* to you, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Let us go after other gods (those whom you have not known), and let us serve them,' ³ you must not listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer, for Yahweh your God _⌊is testing you to know whether you love_⌋* Yahweh your God with all of your heart and with all of your inner self.* ⁴ You shall go after Yahweh your God, and him you shall revere, and his commandment you shall keep, and to his voice you shall listen, and him you shall serve, and to him you shall hold fast. ⁵ But that prophet or the dreamer of that dream shall be executed, for he spoke falsely about Yahweh your God, the one bringing you out from the land of Egypt and the one redeeming you from the house of slavery, in order to seduce you from the way that Yahweh your God commanded you to go in it; so in this way you shall purge the evil from your midst. ⁶ "If your brother, the son of your mother or your son or your daughter _⌊or your wife whom you embrace_⌋* or _⌊your intimate friend_⌋* in secrecy _⌊says_⌋,* 'Let us go and let us serve other gods!' gods that you and your ancestors* have not known, ⁷ from among the gods of the people who are around you, _⌊those near you or those far from you_⌋,* from one end of the earth and up to the other end of the earth, ⁸ you must not give in to him, and you shall not listen to him, and your eye shall not take pity on him, and you shall not have compassion, and you shall not cover up* for him. ⁹ But you shall certainly kill him; your hand shall be first against him to kill him and next the hand of all of the people. ¹⁰ And you shall stone him with stones and let him die, for he tried to seduce you from Yahweh your God, the one bringing you from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. ¹¹ And all of Israel shall hear, and they shall fear, and _⌊they shall not continue to act_⌋* according to this evil thing in your midst. ¹² "If you hear in one of your towns which Yahweh your God is giving to you to live in, someone _⌊saying that_⌋* ¹³ _⌊worthless men_⌋* have gone out from your midst and have seduced the inhabitants of their town, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Let us go and serve other gods!' whom you have not known, ¹⁴ then you shall inquire and examine and interrogate thoroughly, and, look! It is true; the thing has actually been done, this detestable thing in your midst, ¹⁵ then you shall certainly strike down the inhabitants of that town with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword; you shall destroy it and everything in it, its domestic animals with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword.

² If there is found in one of your _⌊towns_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving to you a man or a woman that does evil in the eyes of Yahweh your God to transgress his covenant ³ and by going and serving other gods and so he bows down to them and to the sun or to the moon or to any of the host of heaven _⌊which I have forbidden_⌋,* ⁴ and it is reported to you or you hear about it and you enquire about it thoroughly and, indeed,* the trustworthiness of the deed* has been established, it _⌊has occurred_⌋,* this detestable thing, in Israel, ⁵ then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has* done this evil thing to your gates; that is, the man or the woman, and you shall stone them with stones _⌊to death_⌋.* ⁶ _⌊On the evidence of_⌋* two or three witnesses _⌊the person shall be put to death_⌋.* The person* shall not be put to death by the mouth of one witness. ⁷ The hand of the witnesses shall be first against the person* to kill the person,* and afterward the hands* of all the people, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst.

¹⁵ Therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, "Look, I am feeding this people wormwood, and providing drink for them, water of poison,

⁴ They utter words of vain oaths when _⌊making covenants_⌋,* and judgment blossoms like a poisonous plant on the furrows of the field.

¹² Do horses run on rocks, or does one plow the sea with oxen?* But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood!

²³ For I see you are in _⌊a state of bitter envy_⌋* and _⌊bound by unrighteousness_⌋."*

¹² Watch out, brothers, lest there be in some of you an evil, unbelieving heart, with the result that you fall away* from the living God.

¹⁵ Take care that no one falls short of the grace of God; that no one growing up like a root of bitterness causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;

¹⁷ but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day _⌊that you eat_⌋* from it _⌊you shall surely die_⌋."*

³⁰ But the one _⌊who acts presumptuously_⌋* from among the native or alien blasphemes against Yahweh, and that person must be cut off from the midst of the people.

³⁹ You will have a tassel _⌊for you to look at_⌋* and remember all the commands of Yahweh and do them, and not follow _⌊after the unfaithfulness of your own heart and eyes_⌋,*

² If there is found in one of your _⌊towns_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving to you a man or a woman that does evil in the eyes of Yahweh your God to transgress his covenant

⁴ _⌊With bald-faced pride_⌋* the wicked will not seek God. There is no God in any of his thoughts. ⁵ His ways* endure at all times.* Your judgments are aloof from him. As for all his enemies, he scoffs at them. ⁶ He says in his heart, "I shall not be moved _⌊throughout all generations_⌋,* during which I will have no trouble."

¹¹ He says in his heart, "God has forgotten. He has hidden his face. He never sees."

¹⁸ Though he congratulated his soul while he was living —and people will praise you when you do well for yourself—

⁶ They kill widow and stranger, and they murder orphans, ⁷ while* they say, "Yah* does not see," and "The God of Jacob does not pay attention."

¹ A man who is reproved, being stubborn of neck— suddenly he will be broken, and there will not be healing.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth! Follow the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes— but know that God will bring you into judgment for all these things.

¹⁷ At that time they will call Jerusalem 'The Throne of Yahweh,' and all the nations will be gathered to it, to the name of Yahweh, to Jerusalem, and they will no longer go after the stubbornness of their evil heart.

¹² "They have denied Yahweh, and have said, 'Not he, _⌊for_⌋* evil will not come on us, we will see neither sword nor famine. ¹³ And the prophets are like wind, and the word is not in them.' Thus it will be done to them."

³ Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, "Make your ways and your deeds good and let me dwell with you in this place. ⁴ Do not trust in _⌊the deceitful words_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* 'The temple of Yahweh, the temple of Yahweh, they are the temple of Yahweh.' ⁵ For if you truly make your ways and your deeds good, if you truly do justice between a man and his neighbor, ⁶ you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, and the widow, you do not shed innocent blood in this place, and you do not go after other gods _⌊to your harm_⌋,* ⁷ then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your ancestors* _⌊forever and ever_⌋.* ⁸ Look, you are relying for yourselves on _⌊deceitful words_⌋* without benefiting. ⁹ Will you steal? Will you murder? And will you commit adultery? And will you swear _⌊falsely_⌋?* And will you make a smoke offering to the Baal? And will you go after other gods whom you have not known? ¹⁰ And then you come and you stand _⌊before_⌋* me in this house, which is called _⌊by my name_⌋,* and you say, 'we are safe _⌊to go on doing_⌋* all of these detestable things.' ¹¹ Has this house, which is called _⌊by my name_⌋,* become a cave of robbers in your eyes? Look, I, even I, have seen it," * _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

²⁴ Yet they did not obey, and they did not incline their ear, but they walked in their own plans, in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and _⌊they became worse instead of better_⌋.*

¹⁵ Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, "Please listen, Hananiah, Yahweh has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie. ¹⁶ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh, 'Look, I am going to send you from the face of the earth. This year you will die because you have spoken rebellion against Yahweh.'" ¹⁷ And Hananiah the prophet died in that same year in the seventh month.

¹⁶ "Concerning the word that you have spoken to us in the name of Yahweh, we are not going to listen to you! ¹⁷ But certainly we will do _⌊everything_⌋* that went out from our mouths,* to make smoke offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out to her libations just as we did, we, and our ancestors,* our kings, and our officials, in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, for then _⌊we had enough to eat_⌋,* and we were well-off, and we did not see disaster.

²⁷ Look, I am going to watch over them for harm and not for good, and all people* of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will perish by the sword and by the famine until their perishing.

¹⁶ that is, the prophets of Israel, the ones prophesying concerning Jerusalem and the ones seeing visions of peace, and there is not peace!'" " _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

²² Because you disheartened the heart of the righteous by deception, and I have not* caused him pain, and strengthened the hands of the wicked so that he did not turn* from his wicked way to save his life.

²¹ For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasoning, and their senseless hearts were darkened.

⁵ and all pride that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

¹⁷ This therefore I say and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the Gentiles walk: in the futility of their mind,

⁶ Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.

⁵ You will not bow down to them, and you will not serve them, because I am Yahweh your God, a jealous God, punishing the guilt of the parents on the children on the third and on the fourth generations* of those hating me,

³² And now if you will forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me from your scroll that you have written." ³³ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me I will blot him from my scroll.

¹⁴ For you will not bow in worship to another god, for 'Yahweh Is Jealous' is his name, he is a jealous God,

¹⁴ Leave me alone, and let me destroy them, and let me blot out their name from under heaven, and let me make you into a nation mightier and more numerous than they!'

¹⁹ _⌊And when_⌋* Yahweh your God gives rest to you from all your enemies from around about you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance to take possession of it, you shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens; you shall not forget!"

¹⁵ 'Cursed be the man that makes a divine image or a cast image, which is a detestable thing for Yahweh, the work of the hand of a skilled craftsman, and then sets it in a hiding place.'* And _⌊all the people shall respond_⌋,* 'Amen.' ¹⁶ 'Cursed be the one who dishonors his father or his mother.' And all of the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁷ 'Cursed be the one who moves the boundary marker of his neighbor.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁸ 'Cursed be the one who misleads a blind person on the road.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁹ 'Cursed be the one who deprives the alien, the orphan, and the widow of justice.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁰ 'Cursed be the one who lies with the wife of his father, because _⌊he has dishonored his father's bed_⌋.'* And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²¹ 'Cursed be the one who lies with any kind of animal.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²² 'Cursed be the one who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²³ 'Cursed be the one who lies with his mother-in-law.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁴ 'Cursed be the one who strikes down his neighbor in secret.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁵ 'Cursed be the one who takes a bribe _⌊to murder an innocent person_⌋.'* And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁶ 'Cursed be the one _⌊who does not keep_⌋* the words of this law, to observe them.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'"

¹⁵ "_⌊And then_⌋* if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God _⌊by diligently observing_⌋* all of his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* then all of these curses shall come upon you, and they shall overtake you: ¹⁶ "You shall* be cursed in the city, and you shall be cursed in the field. ¹⁷ "Your basket shall be cursed and your kneading trough. ¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock. ¹⁹ "You shall be cursed _⌊when you come in_⌋,* and you shall be cursed _⌊when you go out_⌋.* ²⁰ "Yahweh will send upon you* the curse,* the panic,* and the threat* _⌊in everything that you undertake_⌋,* _⌊until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly_⌋* _⌊because of_⌋* the evil of your deeds in that* you have forsaken me. ²¹ Yahweh will cause the plague to cling to you _⌊until it consumes you_⌋* from the land that you are going to,* to take possession of it. ²² Yahweh will afflict you with the wasting diseases and with the fever and with the inflammation and with the scorching heat and with the sword* and with the blight and with the mildew, and they shall pursue you _⌊until you perish_⌋.* ²³ And your heavens that are over your heads shall be like bronze, and the earth that is under you shall be like iron. ²⁴ Yahweh will change the rain of your land to fine dust and to sand; from the heaven it shall come down upon you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋.* ²⁵ "Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; on one road you shall go _⌊against_⌋* them,* but you will flee on seven roads _⌊before_⌋* them,* and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ And your dead bodies shall be as food for all of the birds of the heaven and to the animals of the earth, and there shall not be _⌊anyone to frighten them away_⌋.* ²⁷ "Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with _⌊the skin rash that cannot be healed_⌋.* ²⁸ Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart. ²⁹ And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed _⌊all the time_⌋,* and there will not be _⌊anyone who will rescue you_⌋. * ³⁰ You shall become engaged to a woman, but another man shall sleep* with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not live in it; a vineyard you shall plant, but you shall not enjoy it. ³¹ Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat it; your donkey shall be stolen right _⌊before you_⌋,* and it shall not be returned to you; your sheep and your goats shall be given to your enemies, and _⌊there shall not be anyone who rescues you_⌋.* ³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and _⌊you will be looking on_⌋* _⌊longingly_⌋* for* them all day, _⌊but you will be powerless to do anything_⌋.* ³³ A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed _⌊for the rest of your lives_⌋.* ³⁴ You shall become mad _⌊because of what your eyes shall see_⌋.* ³⁵ Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which _⌊you will not be able to be healed_⌋,* from the sole of your foot and up to your crown. ³⁶ Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors* have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone. ³⁷ And you will become a horror and a proverb and ridicule among all the peoples where Yahweh drives you there. ³⁸ "You shall carry out much seed to the field, but you shall gather little produce, for the locust shall devour it. ³⁹ You shall plant vineyards and you shall dress* them, but you shall not drink wine and you shall not gather grapes, for the worm shall eat it.* ⁴⁰ There shall be olive trees for you in all of your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself, for your olives* shall drop off. ⁴¹ You shall bear sons and daughters, but they shall not be _⌊yours_⌋,* for they shall go into captivity. ⁴² The cricket shall take possession of all your trees and the fruit of your ground. ⁴³ The alien that is in your midst shall ascend over you, higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower. ⁴⁴ He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, but you shall be the tail. ⁴⁵ "And all of these curses shall come over you, and they shall pursue you, and they shall overtake you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* because _⌊you did not listen_⌋* to the voice of Yahweh your God, _⌊by observing_⌋* his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. ⁴⁶ And they shall be among you as a sign and as a wonder and among your offspring _⌊forever_⌋.* ⁴⁷ "_⌊Because_⌋* of the fact that you did not serve Yahweh your God with joy and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything, ⁴⁸ then you shall serve your enemies, whom Yahweh will send against you under conditions of famine, in thirst, in nakedness, and in a lack of everything; and he shall place* a yoke of iron on your neck _⌊until he has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁴⁹ Yahweh will raise up against you a nation from far off, from the end of the earth, attacking as the eagle swoops down, _⌊a nation whose language you will not understand_⌋,* ⁵⁰ _⌊a grim-faced nation_⌋* _⌊who does not show respect_⌋* to the old and the young and does not show pity. ⁵¹ And it* shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, _⌊calves of your herds_⌋,* and _⌊lambs of_⌋* your flock _⌊until it has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁵² And it shall besiege you in all your towns _⌊until your high and fortified walls fall_⌋,* which you are trusting in* _⌊throughout your land_⌋;* and it shall besiege you in all of your towns in all of your land that Yahweh your God has given to you. ⁵³ And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave to you, _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁴ The most refined and the very sensitive* man among you _⌊shall be mean with his brother_⌋* and _⌊against his beloved wife_⌋* and against the rest* of his children that he has left over, ⁵⁵ _⌊by refraining from giving_⌋* to even one of them any of the meat of his children that he eats, because there is not anything that is left over for him _⌊during the siege and distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁶ The most refined and the most delicate woman among you, who shall* not venture to put the sole of her foot on the ground from being so delicate and from such gentleness, _⌊shall be mean to her beloved husband_⌋* and against her son and against her daughter, ⁵⁷ and even concerning her afterbirth _⌊that goes out_⌋* from between her feet and also concerning her children that she bears, because she eats them for lack of anything in secret _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon her in your _⌊towns_⌋.* ⁵⁸ "If _⌊you do not diligently observe_⌋* all the words of this law written in this scroll by revering this glorious and awesome name, Yahweh your God, ⁵⁹ then Yahweh shall overwhelm you with your plagues and the plagues of your offspring, severe plagues and lasting illnesses, grievous and enduring. ⁶⁰ And he shall bring back upon you all the diseases of Egypt concerning which _⌊you were in dread_⌋* _⌊because of them_⌋.* ⁶¹ Also any illness and any plague* that is not written in the scroll of this law, he shall bring them, Yahweh, upon you until you are destroyed. ⁶² And you shall remain _⌊only a few people_⌋* in place of the fact you were formerly as the stars of heaven as far as number is concerned, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God. ⁶³ _⌊And then_⌋* as Yahweh delighted over you _⌊to make you prosperous_⌋* to make you numerous, so Yahweh shall delight over you to exterminate you* and to destroy you, and so you shall be plucked from the land that you are going there to take possession of it. ⁶⁴ And Yahweh shall scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth up to the other end of the earth, and there you shall serve other gods that you have not known nor* your ancestors,* gods of wood and stone. ⁶⁵ And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes* and a languishing of your inner self.* ⁶⁶ And _⌊your life shall hang in doubt before you_⌋,* and you shall be startled* night and day, and you shall not be confident of your life. ⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, '_⌊If only it was evening_⌋!'* and in the evening you shall say '_⌊If only it was morning_⌋!'* because of the dread of your heart that you shall feel, and because of the sight of your eyes that you shall see. ⁶⁸ And Yahweh shall bring you back to Egypt in ships by the route that I _⌊promised_⌋* to you that '_⌊You shall not see it again_⌋!'* And you shall sell yourself there to your enemies as slaves and as female slaves, but there will not be a buyer."

⁸ Smoke went forth from his nose, and fire from his mouth consumed. Burning coals blazed from him.

Why, O God, have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture?

⁵⁰ He cleared a path for his anger. He did not spare them* from death but handed their life over to the plague.

⁵⁸ For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and made him jealous with their images.

⁵ How long, O Yahweh? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealousy burn like fire?

³⁴ For jealousy is the fury of a husband, and he will not show restraint on the day of revenge.

⁶ Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death; passion is fierce as Sheol; its flashes are flashes of fire; it is a blazing flame.

¹¹ _⌊When its branches are dry_⌋,* they are broken; women are coming and setting light to it.
For it is not a people of understanding;
therefore his maker will not have compassion on him, and his creator will not show him favor.

¹⁴ And I will smash them, each one against his brother, and the fathers and the sons together," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "I will not have compassion, and I will not take pity, and I will not show compassion from destroying them." '"

¹¹ Therefore _⌊as surely as I live_⌋,* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh, _⌊Surely_⌋* because you have defiled my sanctuary with all of your vile idols and with all of your detestable things, _⌊now indeed I_⌋* will reduce, and my eye will not take pity, and surely I will show no compassion.

⁴ And my eye will not take pity on you, and I will not show compassion for your ways; on you I will bring your detestable things; they will be in the midst of you, and you will know that I am Yahweh.'

⁹ And my eye will not take pity, and I will not show compassion. According to your ways I will _⌊deal with you_⌋,* and your detestable things will be in the midst of you, and you will know that I am Yahweh who strikes.*

³ And he sent out the form of a hand, and he took me by a lock of hair of my head, and the Spirit lifted me between earth and heaven, and it brought me to Jerusalem in visions of God to the doorway of the inner gate _⌊that faced north_⌋,* at which there was the seat of the image of jealousy, which was making jealous.

⁵ And he said to me, "Son of man,* lift up now* your eyes _⌊toward the north_⌋."* And I lifted up my eyes _⌊toward the north_⌋,* and, look, there was to the north of the gate of the altar this image of jealousy at the entrance.

¹⁸ And so I will act in rage, and my eye will not take pity, and I will not have compassion, and they will cry in my ear with a loud voice, and I will not hear them."

¹⁰ And I, my eye will not take pity, and I will not have compassion; their way I will bring on their head."

⁷ For _⌊each person_⌋* from the house of Israel, and from the alien who dwells as an alien in Israel, who separates himself _⌊from following me_⌋* and brings up his idols into his heart and _⌊places before himself_⌋* a stumbling block of his guilt*, and yet he comes to the prophet to consult him concerning me, I Yahweh will answer* him myself. ⁸ And I will set my face against that person, and I will make him to* be a sign and make him into* the subject of proverbs; and I will cut him off from the midst of my people, and you will know I am Yahweh.

²⁵ And I will direct my zeal against you, and they will deal with you in anger; your nose and your ears they will remove, and _⌊those who are left_⌋,* they will fall by the sword, and they will take your sons and your daughters, and _⌊your remnant_⌋* will be consumed by fire.

¹⁴ I, Yahweh, I have spoken. It is coming, and I did it; I will not disregard, and I will not take pity, and I will not reconsider. According to your ways and according to your deeds they will judge you!"* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

⁵ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: "_⌊Certainly_⌋* in the fire of my passion I spoke against the rest of the nations and against all* Edom, who made my land as a possession, because of* its pastureland for plunder, for themselves in all of the joy of their whole heart and in their inner disdain."*

² Yahweh is a jealous God and avenging; Yahweh is avenging and _⌊full of wrath_⌋.* Yahweh takes vengeance against his enemies; he rages against his adversaries.

¹⁸ Moreover, their silver and their gold will not be able to save them on the day of the wrath of Yahweh. And in the fire of his zeal, the whole land shall be consumed, for a terrifying end he shall make for all the inhabitants of the land.

³² Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, together with him, freely give us all things?

²¹ For if God did not spare the _⌊natural_⌋* branches, neither will he spare you.*

²² Or are we attempting to provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than he is, are we?*

²⁹ For indeed our God is a consuming fire.

⁴ For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but held them captive in Tartarus with chains of darkness and handed them over to be kept for judgment, ⁵ and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a proclaimer of righteousness, _⌊and seven others_⌋* when he* brought a flood on the world of the ungodly,

⁵ The one who conquers in this way will be dressed in white clothing, and I will never erase his name from the book of life, and I will declare his name before my Father and before his angels.

¹ But the _⌊Israelites_⌋* broke faith concerning the devoted things.* Achan son of Carmi son of Zabdi son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took from the devoted things;* and _⌊Yahweh's anger was kindled_⌋* against the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ² Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven, east of Bethel, and he said to them, "Go up and spy out Ai." And the men went up and spied out Ai. ³ And they returned to Joshua and said to him, "Do not let all the people go up and attack Ai; only two or three thousand men should go up because they* are few. Do not make all the people weary up there." ⁴ So about three thousand from the people went up there, and they fled before the men of Ai. ⁵ The men of Ai killed about thirty-six of them, and they chased them from the gate up to Shebarim and killed them on the slope. And the hearts* of the people melted and became like water. ⁶ And Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the ground on his face before the ark of Yahweh until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.* ⁷ And Joshua said, "Ah, my Lord! Why did you bring this people across the Jordan to give us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content and stayed beyond the Jordan. ⁸ Please, my Lord! What can I say after _⌊Israel has fled from its enemies_⌋?* ⁹ The Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of this, and they will surround us and cut off our name from the land. What will you do, for your great name?" ¹⁰ And Yahweh said to Joshua, "Stand up! _⌊Why_⌋* have you fallen on your face? ¹¹ Israel has sinned and _⌊transgressed my covenant_⌋* that I commanded them. They have taken from the devoted things;* they have stolen and acted deceitfully, and they have put them among their belongings. ¹² The _⌊Israelites_⌋* were unable to stand before their enemies; _⌊they fled from their enemies_⌋* because they have become a thing devoted* for destruction. _⌊I will be with you no more_⌋* unless you destroy the devoted things* from among you. ¹³ Get up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow. Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel: "There are devoted things* in your midst, O Israel. You will be unable to stand before you enemies until you remove the devoted things* from your midst." ¹⁴ In the morning you will come forward, _⌊tribe by tribe_⌋,* and the tribe that Yahweh will select by lot will come forward by clans, and the clan that Yahweh selects by lot will come forward by families, and the family that Yahweh selects by lot will come forward one by one. ¹⁵ The one caught with the devoted things* will be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because _⌊he transgressed the covenant_⌋* of Yahweh, and because he did a disgraceful thing in Israel." '" ¹⁶ So* Joshua rose early in the morning and brought forward Israel, _⌊tribe by tribe_⌋,* and the tribe of Judah was selected by lot. ¹⁷ And he brought forward the clans of Judah and selected the clan of the Zerahites* by lot. Then he brought forward the clan of the Zerahites,* one by one, and Zabdi was selected by lot. ¹⁸ He brought forward his family, one by one, and Achan son of Carmi son of Zabdi son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected by lot. ¹⁹ And Joshua said to Achan, "My son, please, give glory to Yahweh the God of Israel, and give him a doxology in court.* Tell me, please, what you have done; do not hide it from me." ²⁰ And Achan answered Joshua and said, "It is true. I have sinned against Yahweh the God of Israel, and this is what I did: ²¹ I saw among the spoil a beautiful robe from Shinar,* two hundred shekels of silver, and one bar of gold that weighed fifty shekels; I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, and the silver is under it." ²² Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there they were, hidden in his tent, and the silver was under it. ²³ And they took them from the tent and brought them to Joshua and all the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* And they spread them out before the presence of Yahweh. ²⁴ Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons and daughters, his cattle and donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and everything that was his, and they brought them to the valley of Achor.* ²⁵ And Joshua said, "Why did you bring us trouble? Yahweh will bring you trouble on this day." And all Israel stoned them* with stones;* and they burned them with fire after they stoned them with stones. ²⁶ Then _⌊they placed_⌋* on top of him a great pile of stones that remains to this day. And Yahweh _⌊turned from his burning anger_⌋,* and thus the name of that place to this day is called the valley of Achor.*

⁹ "And it will be my hand against the prophets who are seeing falseness and who are practicing lying divination. They will not be in the council of my people, and they will not be written down in the record book of the house of Israel, and into* the land of Israel they will not come, and then you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.

¹⁸ You will return and see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not serve him.

⁵¹ and will cut him in two and assign his place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!

³² And all the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate them from one another like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

⁴¹ Then he will also say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed ones, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels!

⁴⁶ And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

⁸ And I will make this city a horror, and an object of hissing, everyone who passes by it will be appalled, and will hiss because of all its wounds.

² made war with Bera, the king of Sodom, and Birsha, the king of Gomorrah, Shinab, the king of Admah, and Shemeber, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

²⁴ Yahweh rained down from heaven upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Yahweh. ²⁵ And he overthrew those cities and the whole plain, and the inhabitants of the cities and the vegetation of the ground.

⁴⁵ Abimelech fought against the city all that day, and he captured the city and killed the people that were in it; then he broke down the city and sowed it with salt.

¹⁵ "_⌊Nothing_⌋* remains for him in his tent; sulfur is scattered upon his dwelling place.

³⁴ a fruitful land into a salty place, because of the evil of its inhabitants.

⁹ And its streams shall be changed to pitch and its soil to sulfur, and its land shall become like burning pitch.

⁶ And he will be like a juniper in the wilderness,* and he will not see when good comes, and he will dwell in the parched places in the desert,* in a land of salt flats,* where no one lives.

¹⁶ And let that man be like the cities that Yahweh demolished without regret, and let him hear a cry for help in the morning, and an alarm at the time of noon.

¹¹ But its marshes and its swamps will not be cured, for they were given for salt.

⁸ How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is disturbed* within me; _⌊all_⌋* my compassions are aroused. ⁹ _⌊I will not execute_⌋* _⌊my fierce anger_⌋,* I will not again destroy Ephraim; because I am God and not a mortal,* the Holy One in your midst; and I will not come in wrath.

¹¹ "I overthrew some of you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were as a stick snatched from the fire, and yet you did not return to me," is the declaration of Yahweh.

⁹ "Therefore, as I live"—a declaration of Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel— "Moab shall be as Sodom, and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* like Gomorrah, a place of weeds and salt pits and a desolation forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the remainder of my nation shall possess them."

³⁴ "Now salt is good, but if salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be made salty? ³⁵ It is usable neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; they throw it out. The one who has ears to hear, let him hear!"

²⁹ But on the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed them all.

²⁰ And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs before him, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who had worshiped his image. The two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulphur.

⁸ This house shall become a heap of ruins; all those passing by will be appalled by it and hiss, and they will say, 'On what account did Yahweh do this to this land and to this house?' ⁹ And they will say, 'Because they have forsaken Yahweh their God who brought their ancestors* out from the land of Egypt and they embraced other gods and bowed down to them and served them. Therefore, Yahweh brought on them all of this disaster.'"

²¹ And as for this house, which was exalted, all who pass by it will be appalled and will say, 'Why has Yahweh done thus to this land and to this house?' ²² Then they will say, 'Because they forsook Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* who brought them out from the land of Egypt, and they laid hold of other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore he has brought upon them all this evil.'"

⁸ And many nations will pass by this city and they will say each one to his neighbor, '_⌊Why_⌋* has Yahweh done in this manner to this great city?' ⁹ Then they will answer, 'Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh their God, and bowed down in worship to other gods, and served them.'"

¹⁵ They clap hands over you, all who pass along the way; they hiss and they shake their head, at the daughter of Jerusalem. Is this the city of which it is said, "A perfection of beauty, a joy for all the earth?" ¹⁶ They have opened their mouths against you, all your enemies. They hiss and gnash a tooth, and they say, "We have destroyed her! Surely this is the day we have hoped for; we have found it, we have seen it!" ¹⁷ Yahweh has done what he has planned; he has fulfilled his promise that he ordained from the days of old; he has demolished and not shown mercy; he has made an enemy rejoice over you, he has exalted the _⌊might_⌋* of your foes.

¹² The kings of the earth did not believe, and all the inhabitants of the world, that a foe and an enemy could enter into the gates of Jerusalem.

²³ And they will console you when you see their way and their deeds, and you will know that not for nothing I did all that I did in it," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

⁵ But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

¹⁰ Then he said, "I have been very zealous for Yahweh the God of hosts, for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* have forsaken your covenant. They have demolished your altars, and they have killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left over, and they seek to take my life. ¹¹ He* said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before Yahweh." Suddenly Yahweh was passing by, with a great and strong wind ripping the mountains and crushing rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake. ¹² After the earthquake was a fire, but Yahweh was not in the fire. After the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. ¹³ It happened at the moment Elijah heard, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him and said, "_⌊Elijah, why are you here_⌋?"* ¹⁴ He said, "I have been very zealous for Yahweh the God of Hosts, for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* have forsaken your covenant, demolished your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword; I alone am left, and they seek to take my life!"

¹ Look! Yahweh is about to lay the earth waste and is about to devastate it, and he will twist her surface, and he will scatter her inhabitants. ² And it shall be as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the female slave, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the one to whom he lends. ³ The earth shall be utterly laid waste, and it shall be utterly plundered,
for Yahweh has spoken this word. ⁴ The earth dries up, it withers; the world languishes, it withers. The elevated of the people of the earth languish, ⁵ and the earth is defiled beneath its inhabitants. For they have transgressed laws; they have passed by statutes;* they have broken the everlasting covenant. ⁶ Therefore a curse devours the earth, and the inhabitants in it suffer for their guilt. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth burn, and _⌊few men are left_⌋.*

⁶ I was angry with my people; I profaned my inheritance, and I gave them into your hand. You did not _⌊give_⌋* them mercy; on the aged you made your yoke very heavy.

⁹ Then they will answer, 'Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh their God, and bowed down in worship to other gods, and served them.'"

² And the captain of the guard* took Jeremiah and said to him, "Yahweh your God threatened this disaster to this place, ³ and now he has brought it about,* and Yahweh has done _⌊just as_⌋* he threatened. Because you sinned against Yahweh and did not listen to his voice, so this thing has happened to you.

⁷ All those who found them have devoured them. And their foes have said, 'We are not guilty, _⌊because_⌋* they have sinned against Yahweh, the _⌊true pasture_⌋,* even Yahweh, the hope of their ancestors.'*

⁶⁴ And Yahweh shall scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth up to the other end of the earth, and there you shall serve other gods that you have not known nor* your ancestors,* gods of wood and stone.

¹² They abandoned Yahweh the God of their ancestors,* who brought them out from the land of Egypt. They _⌊followed_⌋* other gods from the gods of the people who were around them; and they bowed down to them, and they provoked the anger of Yahweh. ¹³ They abandoned Yahweh, and they served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

⁸ God chose new leaders,* then war was at the gates; a small shield or a spear was not seen among forty thousand in Israel.

⁷ Now this happened because the _⌊Israelites_⌋* had sinned against Yahweh their God when he brought them up from the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh the king of Egypt and they feared other gods. ⁸ They walked in the statutes of the nations whom Yahweh had driven out from before the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* which the kings of Israel had introduced. ⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* secretly did things which were not right, against Yahweh their God; they built high places for themselves in all their towns, from the watchtower up to the fortified city. ¹⁰ They set up for themselves stone pillars and poles of Asherah worship on every high hill and under every green tree. ¹¹ They burned incense there on all the high places, like the nations which Yahweh deported before them, and they did evil things to provoke Yahweh. ¹² They served idols which Yahweh had said to them, "You shall not do this thing!" ¹³ Yahweh warned Israel and Judah by the hand of his every prophet, with every seer saying, "Turn from all of your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my ordinances, according to all the law which I commanded your ancestors,* which I sent to you by the hand of my servants the prophets." ¹⁴ But they did not listen and they stiffened their necks, like the necks of their ancestors* who did not believe in Yahweh their God. ¹⁵ They rejected his statutes, his covenant which he _⌊made_⌋* with their ancestors,* and his warnings which he gave to them; and they went after the idols, became vain, and went after all the nations which were all around them, which Yahweh had commanded them not to do as they did. ¹⁶ They abandoned all the commands of Yahweh their God and made for themselves two molten calf-shaped idols; they made a pole of Asherah worship and bowed down to the army of the heavens and served Baal. ¹⁷ They made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, they practiced divination and read omens, and they sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of Yahweh to provoke him. ¹⁸ So Yahweh was very angry with Israel and he removed them from his presence; none remained except the tribe of Judah alone.

¹² And he did evil in the eyes of Yahweh his God. He did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet _⌊who spoke for_⌋* Yahweh. ¹³ And he also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God. He stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to Yahweh, the God of Israel. ¹⁴ All the leaders of the priests and the people likewise increased in unfaithfulness according to all the detestable things of the nations. And they polluted the house of Yahweh that he had consecrated in Jerusalem. ¹⁵ And Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* had repeatedly and persistently sent to them by the hand of his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. ¹⁶ But they were mocking the messengers of God and despising his words and scoffing at his prophets until the wrath of Yahweh rose against his people until there was no remedy. ¹⁷ Therefore he brought against them the king of the Chaldeans, and he killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary. He showed no mercy on a young man, a virgin, the elderly, or decrepit. He delivered all into his hand.

³ And you shall say, 'Hear the word of Yahweh, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: "Look, I am about to bring disaster upon this place so that _⌊everyone who hears it_⌋,* his ears will ring. ⁴ Because they have forsaken me, and they have defaced this place, and they have made smoke offerings in it to other gods whom they have not known, they, nor their ancestors,* nor the kings of Judah, and they have filled up this place with the blood of the innocent, ⁵ and they have built the high places of Baal, to burn their children in the fire, burnt offerings to Baal, which I commanded not, and I ordered not, and it did not come to my _⌊mind_⌋.* ⁶ "_⌊Therefore_⌋* look, days are about to come," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, _⌊but_⌋* the Valley of the Slaughter. ⁷ And I will lay waste the plans* of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will bring them to ruin by the sword _⌊before_⌋* their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life, and I will give their dead bodies* as food to the birds* of heaven and to the animals* of the earth. ⁸ And I will make this city a horror, and an object of hissing, everyone who passes by it will be appalled, and will hiss because of all its wounds. ⁹ And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons, and the flesh of their daughters, and each one will eat the flesh of his neighbor in the siege and in the distress which their enemies and those who seek their life inflict on them." ' ¹⁰ "Then you shall break the jar before the eyes of the men who go with you. ¹¹ And you shall say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "So I will break this people and this city as one breaks the vessel of the potter, so that it is not able to be repaired again. And in Topheth they will bury _⌊until there is no room to bury_⌋.* ¹² Thus will I do to this place," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and to its inhabitants, to make this city like Topheth. ¹³ And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be unclean like the place of Topheth, all the houses where they made smoke offerings upon their roofs to all the host of heaven, and where they poured out libations to other gods." '"

² "Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen all the disaster that I have brought on Jerusalem, and on all the towns of Judah. And look, they are a site of ruins this day, and there is not in them an inhabitant, ³ _⌊because of_⌋* their wickedness that they committed to provoke me to anger by going to make smoke offerings, serving other gods whom they had not known, neither they, you, or your ancestors.* ⁴ And I sent to you all my servants the prophets, _⌊sending over and over again_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* "Please, you must not do this detestable thing that I hate." ⁵ But they did not listen and they did not incline their ears* to turn back from their wickedness, to not make smoke offerings to other gods. ⁶ So my wrath and my anger were poured out* and burned* in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, and they became as a site of ruins, as a desolation, as they are this day.'

¹⁴ " 'But* if you do not listen to me and you do not carry out* all these commands, ¹⁵ and if you reject my statutes and if your inner self* abhors my regulations, to not carry out* all my commands by your breaking my covenant, ¹⁶ I _⌊in turn_⌋* will do this to you: then* I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed _⌊in vain_⌋,* and your enemies shall eat it. ¹⁷ And I will set my face against you, and you shall be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; and your haters shall rule over you, and you shall flee away, but* there shall not be _⌊anybody who is pursuing_⌋* you. ¹⁸ " 'And if in spite of these things you do not listen to me, then* I will continue to discipline you seven times for your sins. ¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your strength; and I will make your heaven like iron* and your land like copper. ²⁰ And your strength shall be consumed _⌊in vain_⌋;* and your land shall not give its produce, and the land's trees shall not give their fruit. ²¹ " 'And if you go against me in hostility and you are not willing to listen to me, then* I will add a plague onto you seven times according to your sins. ²² And I will send _⌊wild animals_⌋* out among you, and they shall make you childless, and they shall cut down your domestic animals, and they shall make you fewer; and your roads shall be desolate. ²³ " 'And if you do not accept correction from* me through these things, but* you go against me in hostility, ²⁴ then* I myself* will also go against you in hostility, and I myself* also will strike you seven times for your sins. ²⁵ And I will bring upon you a sword that seeks vengeance for the covenant, and you shall be gathered to your cities; and I will send a plague in your midst, and you shall be given into the hand of an enemy. ²⁶ At my breaking the _⌊supply_⌋* of bread* for you, then* ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall return your bread by weight; and you shall eat it, and you shall not be satisfied. ²⁷ " 'And if through this you do not listen to me and you go against me in hostility, ²⁸ then* I will go against you in hostile anger, and also* I myself* will discipline you seven times for your sins. ²⁹ And you shall eat the flesh of your sons; and the flesh of your daughters you shall eat. ³⁰ And I will destroy your high places, and I will cut down your incense altars, and I will place your corpses on your idols' corpses; and my inner self* shall abhor you. ³¹ And I will lay your cities in ruins, and I will lay waste your sanctuaries; and I shall not smell your sacrifices'* appeasing fragrance. ³² And I myself* will lay waste the land, and your enemies who are living in it shall be appalled over it. ³³ And I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw a sword behind you; and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a ruin. ³⁴ Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths all the days of its lying desolate, and you shall be in the land of your enemies; then the land shall rest, and it shall enjoy its Sabbaths. ³⁵ All the days of its lying desolate it shall rest for the time* that it had not rested during your Sabbaths while you were living on it. ³⁶ As for* the ones who remain among you, I will bring* fearfulness in their hearts in the land of their enemies; and a sound of a windblown leaf shall pursue them, and they shall flee like flight _⌊before_⌋* a sword, and they shall fall, but* there shall not be a pursuer. ³⁷ And they shall stumble over _⌊one another_⌋* as _⌊from before_⌋* a sword, but* there shall not be a pursuer; and _⌊you shall have no resistance_⌋* _⌊before_⌋* your enemies. ³⁸ And you shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you. ³⁹ And because of their guilt, the ones among you who remain shall decay in the land of their enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their ancestors,* they shall decay with them. ⁴⁰ " 'But* when they confess their guilt and the guilt of their ancestors* in their infidelity that they displayed against me, and moreover that they went against me in hostility— ⁴¹ I myself* also* went against them in hostility, and I brought them into the land of their enemies—or if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and then they pay for their guilt, ⁴² I will remember* my covenant with Jacob; and I will remember also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. ⁴³ And the land shall be deserted by them, and it shall enjoy its Sabbaths in its being desolate from them, and they themselves* must pay for their guilt, _⌊simply because_⌋* they rejected my regulations, and their inner self* abhorred my statutes. ⁴⁴ And _⌊in spite of_⌋* this, _⌊when they are_⌋* in the land of their enemies I will not reject them, and I will not abhor them to destroy them, to break my covenant with them, because I am Yahweh their God. ⁴⁵ And I will remember the first covenant for them*—whom I brought out from the land of Egypt _⌊in the sight of_⌋* the nations _⌊to be their God_⌋.* I am Yahweh.'" ⁴⁶ These are the rules and the regulations and the laws that Yahweh gave between himself and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* on _⌊Mount Sinai_⌋* _⌊through_⌋* Moses.

²⁰ Yahweh will not be willing to forgive him, for by then the anger of Yahweh will smoke, and his passion against that man and all the curses written in this scroll will descend on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under heaven. ²¹ And Yahweh will single him out for calamity out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in the scroll of this law.

¹¹ "And all Israel transgressed your law and turned aside so as not to listen to your voice, and so the curse and the oath which was written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, has been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him. ¹² And so he has carried out his words which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us, to bring upon us a great calamity which was not done under all of heaven as it was done in Jerusalem. ¹³ Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all of this calamity has come upon us, and _⌊we have not implored_⌋* the face of Yahweh our God so as to turn from our iniquities and to attend closely to your faithfulness.* ¹⁴ So Yahweh has kept watch over the* calamity, and now he has brought it upon us. Indeed, Yahweh our God is righteous concerning all his works* that he has done, but we have not listened to his voice.

²⁴ And so Yahweh commanded us to observe all of these rules and to revere Yahweh our God _⌊for our benefit_⌋* _⌊all the days that we live_⌋,* _⌊as it is today_⌋.*

¹⁸ But you must remember Yahweh your God, for he is the one giving you strength to acquire wealth in order to confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors* _⌊as it is today_⌋.*

²⁵ "Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; on one road you shall go _⌊against_⌋* them,* but you will flee on seven roads _⌊before_⌋* them,* and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth.

¹⁵ Yahweh will strike Israel as one shakes the reed plant in the water, and he will root Israel up from this good land that he gave to their ancestors.* He will scatter them beyond the River* because they have made their sacred poles which are provoking Yahweh.

¹⁸ So Yahweh was very angry with Israel and he removed them from his presence; none remained except the tribe of Judah alone.

²³ until Yahweh removed Israel from his presence as he had foretold by the hand of all his servants, the prophets. And so he deported Israel from upon his land to Assyria until this day.

²⁰ then I will uproot them from upon my land that I have given to them, and this house that I have consecrated for my name I will send away from before my face, and I will make it a proverb and a taunt among all the nations.

⁷ From the days of our ancestors* until this day we have been in great guilt, and because of our sins we ourselves, our kings, and our priests have been handed into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to utter shame, as it is this day.

⁵ but God will pull you down forever. He will snatch you and tear you away from your tent, and he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah

²² And those who are wicked will be cut off from the land, and those who are treacherous will be uprooted from it.

¹⁰ 'If only you will stay in this land, then I will build you and I will not tear you down, and I will plant you and I will not pluck you up, for I relent of the disaster that I have brought to you.

⁷ "_⌊Righteousness belongs to you, O Lord_⌋,* and on us is open shame, just as it is this day to the people of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, _⌊those who are near and those who are far off_⌋* in all the lands to which you have driven them,* because of their infidelity which they displayed against you.

²³ Woe to those _⌊who are pregnant_⌋* and to those who are nursing their babies* in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people, ²⁴ and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations,* and Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

⁷ And you shall recite them to your children, and you shall talk about them at the time of your living in your house and at the time of your going on the road and at the time of your lying down and at the time of your rising up.

² and you return to Yahweh and you listen to his voice according to all that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* both you and your children,* with all your heart and with all your inner self,*

⁶ and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom, for _⌊insight has many sides_⌋.* And know that God _⌊on your behalf_⌋* has forgotten _⌊some of_⌋* your guilt. ⁷ "Can you find out the essence of God, or can you find out _⌊the ultimate limits_⌋* of Shaddai?

²⁸ And to the human beings he said, 'Look, the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.'"

¹⁴ Intimate fellowship with Yahweh is for those who fear him, and he makes known his covenant to them.

² I will offer* a parable with my mouth. I will pour out riddles from long ago, ³ that we have heard and known, and our ancestors* have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their children,* telling the next generation the praises of Yahweh, and his power and his wonders that he has done. ⁵ For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law* in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors* to teach to their children, ⁶ so that the next generation might know— children yet to be born— that they might rise up and tell their children, ⁷ that they might set their confidence in God, and not forget the deeds of God, but keep his commandments,

³² for he who is perverse is an abomination of Yahweh, but those who are upright are his confidence.

²⁰ for teaching and for testimony?" _⌊surely they who speak like this have no dawn_⌋.*

¹⁸ For who has stood in the council of Yahweh, that he has seen and heard his word? Who has listened attentively to his word and heard it?*

¹⁸ and told them to seek mercy _⌊from the God of heaven_⌋* concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions, along with the remainder of the wise men of Babylon, would not be killed. ¹⁹ Then in a vision of the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel; then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

²² He reveals the deep and the hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.

²⁷ Daniel answered the king and said, "The mystery that the king asks, no wise men, conjurers,* magicians,* or diviners are able to make known to the king. ²⁸ But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what it is that will be at the end of days. This is your dream and the visions of your head on your bed. ²⁹ "As for you, king,* your thoughts on your bed _⌊turned to_⌋* what it was that would be _⌊in the future_⌋,* and the revealer of mysteries has made known to you what that would be. ³⁰ And as for me, it is not because of wisdom that is in me more than _⌊any other living person_⌋* that this mystery is revealed to me, but _⌊in order that_⌋* the explanation* may be made known to the king and you will _⌊understand_⌋* the thoughts of your _⌊mind_⌋.*

⁹ " 'O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians,* I myself know that the spirit* of the holy gods is in you, and _⌊no mystery is too difficult_⌋* for you. Now tell me the visions of my dream that I saw, and its explanation.*

⁷ Surely my Lord does not do anything unless he has revealed his secret to his servants the prophets.

²⁷ All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and _⌊anyone to whom_⌋* the Son wants to reveal him.* ²⁸ Come to me, all of you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take my yoke on you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy to carry and my burden is light."

¹¹ And he answered and* said to them, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to those people it has not been granted.

³⁵ in order that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled, who said,
"I will open my mouth in parables; I will proclaim what has been hidden since the creation."**

¹⁵ No longer do I call you slaves, because the slave does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything that I have heard from my Father I have revealed to you.

³¹ but these things are recorded in order that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by* believing you may have life in his name.

²² Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that* to you? You follow me!"

⁷ But he said to them, "It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has set by his own authority.

³³ Oh, the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how incomprehensible are his ways! ³⁴ "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?*

¹⁶ "For who has known the mind of the Lord; who has advised him?"* But we have the mind of Christ.

⁵ _⌊remembering the_⌋* sincere faith in you, which lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that is in you also,
