⁴ And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top reaches to the heavens. And let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

⁷ Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand _⌊each other's language_⌋."*

¹⁰ Now* the Valley of Siddim _⌊was full of tar pits_⌋.* And the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and _⌊fell into them_⌋,* but the rest fled to the mountains.

¹⁴ And they made their lives bitter with hard work with mortar and with bricks and with all sorts of work in the field—with all their work in which they ruthlessly enslaved them.

³ But when she could no longer hide him, she got a papyrus basket for him, and she coated it with tar and with pitch, and she placed the boy in it, and she placed it among the reeds on the bank of the Nile.

⁷ "You must no longer give straw to the people to make the bricks like _⌊before_⌋.* Let them go and gather straw for themselves. ⁸ But the quota of the bricks that they were making _⌊before_⌋* _⌊you must require of them_⌋.* You must not reduce from it, because they are lazy. Therefore they are crying out, saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' ⁹ Let the work be heavier on the men so that they will do it and not pay attention to words of deception." ¹⁰ And the slave drivers of the people and their foremen went out, and they spoke to the people, saying, "Thus says Pharaoh, 'I am not giving you straw. ¹¹ You go, get straw for yourselves from whatever you find because not a thing is being reduced from your work.'" ¹² And the people spread out in all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for the straw. ¹³ And the slave drivers were insisting, saying, "Finish your work _⌊for each day_⌋* on its day, as _⌊when there was straw_⌋."* ¹⁴ And the foremen of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* whom Pharaoh's slave drivers had appointed over them, were beaten by men who were saying, "Why have you not completed your portion of brickmaking _⌊as before, both yesterday and today_⌋?"* ¹⁵ And the foremen of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you treat your servants like this? ¹⁶ Straw is not being given to your servants, but they are saying to us, 'Make bricks!' and, look, your servants are being beaten, but it is the fault of* your people." ¹⁷ And he said, "You are lazy, lazy! Therefore you are saying, 'Let us go; let us sacrifice to Yahweh.' ¹⁸ And now go, work, but straw will not be given to you, and you must give the full quota of bricks."

³¹ He also brought out the people who were in it and put them to the saws and to the iron picks and to the iron axes, and he sent them to the place of the brickmakers. Thus he used to do to all the cities of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and he and all of the army returned to Jerusalem.

⁵ They encourage themselves in the evil matter. They talk of secretly laying snares. They say, "Who will see them?"

¹¹ If they say, "Come with us! We shall lie in wait for blood; we shall ambush the innocent without cause.*

¹ I said _⌊to myself_⌋,* "Come! I will test* pleasure _⌊to see whether it is worthwhile_⌋."* But look, "This also is vanity!"

⁵ And now let me tell you what I myself am about to do to my vineyard.
I will remove its hedge, and it shall become a devastation. I will break down its wall, and it shall become a trampling.

¹⁰ "The bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stone. The sycamore-fig trees were felled, but we will replace them with cedars."

⁶ Each one helps* his neighbor; he says to his brother, "Take courage!" ⁷ And the artisan encourages the _⌊goldsmith_⌋,* the one who makes smooth with the hammer encourages the one who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, "It is good!" And they strengthen it with nails so it cannot be knocked over.

³ the people _⌊who provoke_⌋* me to anger continually to my face, slaughtering for sacrifices in the garden, and making smoke offerings on bricks,

¹⁴ Draw water for a siege! Strengthen your fortifications! Go to the mud pit! Trample the clay! Grasp the brick mold!

¹³ But encourage one another _⌊day by day_⌋*, as long as it is called "today," so that _⌊none of you become hardened_⌋* by the deception of sin.

²⁴ And let us think about _⌊how to stir one another up to love_⌋* and good works,

¹³ Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there, and carry on business and make a profit,"

¹ Come now, you rich people, weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming upon you!
